Richard Fahey has not yet decided whether to give Ribchester one final outing in the Breeders' Cup Mile following confirmation he will retire to Kildangan Stud in Ireland in 2018. The Godolphin-owned five-year-old has struck gold at the highest level on three occasions this season, dominating his rivals in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot before bouncing back from defeat at Goodwood to win the Prix du Moulin at Chantilly. He was a hot favourite to claim his fifth Group One success overall in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, but with the rain-softened ground against him, he had to make do with the runner-up spot behind John Gosden's filly Persuasive. The British Horseracing Authority's Official Handicapper Dominic Gardiner-Hill felt underfoot conditions were not the only factor. "My view is that the field went off too hard too early as Toscanini attempted to set the race up for Ribchester," he wrote on the BHA website. "In fact it was noticeable that [Frankie] Dettori took a pull after about a furlong and eased Persuasive back into midfield having originally been upsides Richard Fahey’s colt – and that was a main contributory factor to the result." Darley confirmed on Tuesday morning the son of Iffraaj will take up stallion duties next year, when he will command a fee of 30,000 euro, but there is the possibility of one final hurrah at Del Mar in California on Saturday week. Fahey said: "I've spoken to Joe (Osborne, Godolphin chief executive) who has spoken to the boss (Sheikh Mohammed). Basically, they're leaving the decision (on the Breeders' Cup) to me and I'm leaving it to the horse. "He seems to have come out of Ascot well, but I'm going to leave it a few more days and let him tell me whether he wants to go or not." Reflecting on Ribchester's racing career, the trainer added: "We just feel very privileged to have had him and I'm sure he'll be a super stallion. "Without wanting to disrespect any of the other horses we've trained, the ratings tell you he's the best we've had, so it's very easy to say that."

BANKER
Elwazir (2.55 Newmarket)
Anyone who follows me on Twitter will know that I love this two-year-old son of Frankel and he impressed virtually every onlooker when finishing second in a useful maiden at Newmarket last month. The chestnut colt showed signs of greenness but stayed on pluckily to finish second under hands and heels behind a useful performer in Thrave. He probably wouldn't have to run up to that standard to win here, but improvement is expected and he'll be a Stakes performer next season.
10/11 Elwazir 2:55 Newmarket GOOD THING
Left Alone (1.45 Newmarket)
Runners with experience are likely to come to the fore here and the Hugo Palmer-trained Left Alone should get off the mark at the third time of asking, denying the more exposed La Diva. Highly encouraging when third on debut at Yarmouth, the two-year-old filly went one better at Kempton but should've really won as she met trouble at a crucial point in the race. The extra furlong will suit and she boasts an exciting turn of foot.
4/6 Left Alone 1:45 Newmarket
DARK HORSE
Guzman (2.20 Newmarket)
The hardest race on the card by a mile but Guzman looks a good bet to run into the places at the very least with the step up to seven furlongs working in his favour. He boasts strong early season form and hasn't been disgraced in four runs since being gelded, only one of which came over this longer trip. He finished fourth on that occasion off a 5lb higher mark and showed that he was ready to score for the third time in eight starts when running creditably at York last time out.

Newmarket: Anthony Burke
Ship Of The Fen (5.15 Newmarket, nap)
Stepped up to the plate earlier this month with a convincing win in a competitive nursery at Nottingham. He finished with a determined effort that day suggesting that the inevitable 6lb rise in the weights may not be enough to halt his progress here.

Lambourn: James Burn
Rebel De Lope (8.20 Kempton, nap)
The three-year-old has ability, but has not had the chance to show it on fast turf this term. However, the draw is okay and there could be some mileage in his mark of 84.

Alexandrakollontai (3.30 Newmarket, nap)
Has a good winning record and wasn't disgraced on the AW at Newcastle last time. Runs off her lower turf mark today and with conditions to suit can win for the second time this year.

Rosin Box 5:20 Navan
West Country: Andrew King
Kalondra (3.45 Sedgefield,nap)
Useful in his grade over hurdles and the best of these in that sphere so connections are confident he can make a winning start over fences.

High Acclaim (8.20 Kempton)
Has a couple of runs in better races this year that give him a definite chance in this grade. Looks weighted to go well under 7lb claimer Rossa Ryan, who has looked good value around Kempton recently.

Theatrebar has very low mileage for a nine-year-old, and one gets the impression the best is still to come from him.
A comfortable winner over course and distance last November on his debut for Dan Skelton, he still looks potentially ahead of his current mark and will take all the beating.

Champion Bumper winner Fayonagh has been put down after breaking a hind leg on the gallops on Wednesday morning.
The Gordon Elliott-trained mare, who only suffered one defeat in her six races, was working under Davy Russell when the accident occurred.
She had made a successful hurdling debut only recently and was expected to take high rank among the novices this season.
Elliott told his Betfair column: "I'm devastated to announce that Fayonagh broke a hind leg this morning while doing a routine piece of work under Davy Russell at Skryne gallops and had to be put-down.
"As a dual Grade One-winning mare she was an exceptional talent and the sky was the limit with her.
"Needless to say, we are all heartbroken and our thoughts are with the connections at this time."

IN TODAY'S SPORTING LIFE................ After a 16/1 nap earlier in the week, Ben Linfoot seeks to land another big-priced winner at Chelmsford on Thursday. Recommended bet: Ben Linfoot's Daily Nap, October 26 Loveatfirstsight was noticeably well punted on her debut for Jane Chapple-Hyam at Kempton just under a fortnight ago and although ultimately well beaten that day, she could be worth persevering with. Having joined from Michael Atxxxxer's with a mark of 57, she's now immediately down to 55 and that may be a little hasty from the handicapper given her placed form from a mark of 60 just this summer. Granted, she's a long-standing maiden now but she has hit the board in almost half of her 12 career starts in total and she remains totally unexposed at a mile having only raced over the trip twice in her life. Going back to this time last year, she also has some encouraging form at Chelmsford so the track is nothing to fear and the refitting of cheekpieces, something she wore when second and third at Wolverhampton in July, looks another positive. Daily Nap record: +3.25pts

It is looking increasingly likely that dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill will run in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. Aidan O'Brien's colt, who has not tasted victory since following up his Newmarket Classic win at the Curragh, finished third in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to Persuasive at Ascot on Saturday after meeting trouble in running. "There is a big chance Churchill will go for the Classic. He seems to have come out of Ascot very well," said O'Brien. "He jumped smart in that (QEII) and Ryan (Moore) got him into a lovely rhythm. He just got tightened a little bit going into the two when he started to build into his rhythm. "Ryan felt he never got into top gear, but he went to the line very strong. He seems to have come out the race well and we look forward to what is going to happen. "He is very like Giant's Causeway. He is miler that you would like to think will get a mile and a quarter. "He is big and powerful, like those dirt horses." Churchill may be joined in the Classic by War Decree, last seen winning a Group Three at Dundalk. "Ryan rode War Decree in the French Derby and really liked him. We gave him a good break in the middle of the summer and just had the run at Dundalk," said O'Brien. "Donnacha (O'Brien) rode him and really liked him, he travelled well and won very easily. It would be his first start on dirt, but that would be interesting. This is a massive step up from that, but he seems to have come out of that well." Highland Reel won the Turf last year and looks like a major player once more after a good run in the Champion Stakes. "We just felt Highland Reel needed the run last week as it had been a long time since he ran. He has come out of the race well. Ryan was over the moon with him in the race and he kept him out (wide) as long as he could. He loves that nice ground he should get," said O'Brien. Rhododendron and Roly Poly have a choice of engagements, and O'Brien also looks set to be well represented in the two-year-old races in America. "Happily had a little bit of a blip before her last run (Fillies' Mile), but she seems to be fine now. After a few days she was fine and all her bloods seem to be fine now. We were delighted with her on Arc day," said the Ballydoyle handler. "September had a nice run in the Fillies' Mile. She ran a very good race, but she didn't get a clear run. She is by Deep Impact and I think they handle quicker ground. She had a few lesser runs in between, but her last run was she was coming back after a little break and the ground was a little slower as well. "Mendelssohn and US Navy Flag are in both races (Juvenile Turf and Juvenile). US Navy Flag would have the option of either and he could go on to the dirt. Mendelssohn would not have the experience of him and would probably go on the grass, but I am not sure which way yet."

Triumph Hurdle winner Defi Du Seuil has been ruled out of his planned comeback at Cheltenham on Saturday due to the ground. Trainer Philip Hobbs had hoped to blow the cobwebs away in the Masterson Holdings Hurdle before tougher targets awaited later in the season. The JP McManus-owned gelding was one of the stars of the last campaign, winning all seven starts and following up his Festival win at Aintree. Speaking to www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk, Hobbs said: "Defi Du Seuil doesn't run. "It's just watered ground and we don't want to start him on a faster surface than usual. "It's a long season ahead - it's no good taking risks at this time of year. "He might go to the Fighting Fifth (December 2) or the International Hurdle (December 16) at Cheltenham."

Replacing the likes of Kauto Star and Denman was never going to be easy for Paul Nicholls. But with an exciting crop of horses at his disposal, this could be the season to achieve it. Having undergone a period of transition since the retirement of his established Grade One performers, the Ditcheat handler now looks to have a squad capable of becoming the new stars of Manor Farm Stables. He said: "We have not got an obvious King George or Gold Cup horse in there, but it is an exciting team. They are really nice horses for the future. "We might have lacked a few Grade One winners last season, but we had a great season with our best total of 171 winners and taking the trainers' championship right to the wire. I would love to train my 3,000th winner and we are less than two hundred away from it. That is the main target I would like to achieve." The two-mile chase division is one in which Nicholls has excelled in the past, and in Politologue he could have another destined for the top. He said: "He is very nice and had a good season last season. He was unfortunate not to win a Grade One at Aintree. It was just one of those things at Aintree and we were lucky to have the back-up we did in the race with San Benedeto winning. He seems in really good order at home "He will start off in the Haldon Gold Cup and we will then make a plan, whether we stick at two miles or go back up to two and a half. He is a very smart horse and has progressed physically. "He jumps so well and that is a big part of his armoury. Over two and a half we were holding on to him a bit more and not using his jumping. He would be one I'm really excited about as he was our leading novice chaser last season." If there is one area where the 10-times champion trainer contains plenty of strength and depth it is his team of novice chasers for the season. Heading them is Betfair Hurdle runner-up Movewiththetimes who is on course to make his eagerly-anticipated chasing debut at Cheltenham on Friday. He said: "Obviously he was a nice horse last year and he did very well. He won his bumper, then he won his first novice hurdle. We ran him at Cheltenham in November and it didn't work out, but he ran really well in the Betfair and was only beaten three-quarters of a length. "He didn't make Cheltenham (in March) as he had a minor setback, but he is now fine. He will make his chasing debut at Cheltenham on Friday, all being well. I hope he will be a really nice novice chaser. "I think we start over the two, but he will probably get a little bit further. He looks a sound jumper and has been jumping nicely at home." At the other of the distance scale Nicholls has high hopes Grade One-winning hurdler Adrien Du Pont will be a force to be reckoned with over staying trips. He said: "Adrien Du Pont was obviously a high-class juvenile hurdler and won a Grade One the season before last. He was a typical four-year-old in that he found his second season tough, but he ran a good race in a Grade One at Auteuil. "He started life well over fences at Fontwell. He jumped brilliantly there, but he has always been a good jumper. It was good ground that day and he wouldn't want a bog. "He will go for the Rising Stars at Wincanton next, but hopefully he will make a nice three-mile chaser." The talented Cliffs Of Dover is not expected to return from injury until Christmas time, but Nicholls has three juveniles that could make an impact over the smaller obstacles and step up to take centre stage. "Birds Of Prey and Act Of Valour are two nice juveniles," he said. "Act Of Valour was rated 97 on the Flat. He jumps very nicely at home and will be one to run this side of Christmas, he is a nice type of horse to have in that division. "Birds Of Prey won his last two for John Oxx and looks another useful one to go to war with. "Sao is another nice juvenile. He is closely related to Frodon and he won a juvenile hurdle in France on his last start. He looks a big, strong horse." Politologue 'is a very smart horse and has progressed physically' Nicholls on 5 others to note: BINGE DRINKER "He is a bit of a dark horse, who was with Rebecca Curtis. He won a few hurdles and won his one start over fences last year and beat Might Bite, who as we know did well. He got a small leg injury, we had him in the summer and started with him on September 1. He won't be ready to run until around Christmas time and we won't rush him. He is a nice horse to go to war with and should be a good three-mile chaser. If things go the right way, he could be a National horse." CAPITAINE "He has had two runs over fences. The one at Newton Abbot at the back-end was to teach him, then he ran at Market Rasen on Saturday and beat a horse rated 133 hard held by 22 lengths. We are really pleased with him and he is only five so hopefully there is lots of progression in him. He lost his way a little bit in the spring, but he was a big, weak horse. He didn't quite see his races out, but he is much stronger now. He will probably head for the Henry VIII now at Sandown. I have a slight suspicion he is better going right-handed." CLAN DES OBEAUX "He is a really nice horse and had a wind operation in the summer. He struggled with his breathing, but he still did quite well. He was good winning at Newbury and he ran very well when he was just beaten by Whisper at Cheltenham. He will probably go up to the Colin Parker at Carlisle and we will go from there. Hopefully he will get three miles, but he is still only a five-year-old." DIEGO DU CHARMIL "He is a very nice horse and won well first time out. It didn't go to plan last time, but he did strike into himself and he will be off until Christmas. He was lucky as it was only millimetres from a severe injury. He will have three quiet weeks now. I think a lot of him and there is plenty more to come from him. He wants better ground and we are looking at having him right for the major meetings later on in the season." TOPOFTHEGAME "He is a lovely big horse. He won his point-to-point then he won for us first time at Ascot and was only beaten a head back there on his final start. He is a big, scopey horse and will jump fences. He will start over two and a half or two miles six on a nice, big, galloping track and we will then go from there. He might go to Newbury next month and start there."

Will Kennedy has a good record when riding at Carlisle. He boasts a 28 per cent strike-rate at the track and partners Dark Sunset (2.15) and Cousin Oscar (3.55).
It’s a good time of year for Lucy Wadham, who has a 25 per cent strike-rate two weeks either side of today’s date. She sends Shanroe Santos (4.25) to Carlisle, her only runner of the day.
Ian Williams and Tom O’Brien have a 43 per cent strike-rate when teaming up at Ludlow. They are represented by Banditry (4.35).
Sylvester Kirk is very much to the fore on the current hot trainers list. He sends Dance Me (6.45) to Chelmsford and the form of her debut third at Newbury has worked o

in today's sporting life................... Hyperfocus seems to relish cut in the ground so the autumnal conditions should be right up his street opines Anita Chambers. She has a tip for every race. Hyperfocus seems to relish cut in the ground so the autumnal conditions in the Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager Handicap at Doncaster should be right up his street. Hugo Palmer thought enough of his charge to pitch him into Group Two company as a juvenile last year, but he disappointed in the Superlative Stakes and that run signalled a premature end to his campaign. It looked as though the son of Intense Focus would struggle to get his head in front after three starts this term, but a mid-season gelding operation seems to have worked the oracle, Hyperfocus scoring twice since his return. Hyperfocus first scored at Haydock at the beginning of September before defying a 5lb rise to claim another win on heavy ground at the Merseyside venue at the end of the month. The handicapper took a dim view of that verdict and hiked him 8lb in the ratings and while conditions on Town Moor will be nowhere near as deep as at Haydock, Hyperfocus has proved perfectly adept on good to soft ground in the past. Harry Fry does not many runners on the Flat, but Golden Birthday has been flying the flag in fine style and can continue to do so in the Free Bets At 188Bet Casino Handicap. A four-times hurdle winner, Golden Birthday has made a successful transition to the level with victories at Leicester and Kempton, although it could be argued the runner-up slightly gifted him a winning opportunity on the latter occasion. That said, Golden Birthday still won in decent style and while a 5lb hike is not ideal, a further step up in distance should play into his hands. John Gosden and Frankie Dettori can make it a double at Newbury with Royal Line and First Eleven. Royal Line steps up a notch in class for the British Stallion Studs EBF Conditions Stakes having absolutely hosed up at Haydock on his most recent start. While he won by just over two lengths that day, he was eased right down in the finish in the manner of a potentially smart horse. First Eleven has fluffed the start on his two outings to date but if he can pull it together this time, the second division of the Join Hot To Trot For 2018 Novice Stakes looks eminently winnable. Bred to be a Classic contender as a Frankel half-brother to Kingman, First Eleven has just given himself too much to do with his tardy starts and Gosden will surely have him well drilled in that area now. Cheltenham opens its doors for the first time this season and connections of Sceau Royal will be hoping he will back here at the Festival in March. The five-year-old finished sixth in the Champion Hurdle back in March, a run which only served to underline the fact he is a little short of top-class over hurdles. However, Sceau Royal must have delighted trainer Alan King on his first start over fences, running out a comfortable four-and-a-half-length winner at Warwick at the start of the month. He looked a natural over the larger obstacles, hardly being pressed to claim the verdict, and while the squareintheair.com Novices' Chase is a step up, Sceau Royal should once again shine. Beat That has not had quite the same dream start over fences, but it could be dangerous to rule him out of the Ryman Stationery Cheltenham Business Club Novices' Chase. A dual Grade One winner over hurdles back in 2014, Beat That has had his problems since and was off the track from January 2015 until returning at Sandown in April this year. Well off the pace in the Select Hurdle, Nicky Henderson then turned his attention to fences and put up an excellent display of jumping before finding Brother Tedd half a length too good in the finish. Hopes were obviously high he could improve on that effort at Perth in July, but after leading through the early stages, a sticky jump at the 12th let in his rivals and he looked held when he came down at the last. If that fall has not left too much of a mark, Beat That could still realise a bit more of his potential over fences. Sporting Life suggestions: CHELTENHAM: 2.00 Its All Guesswork, 2.35 Sceau Royal, 3.10 Buckle Street, 3.45 Beat That, 4.20 Indian Castle, 4.55 Gortroe Joe, 5.30 Our Kylie. Mike Cattermole looks back on the seventh Champions Day at Ascot, while anticipating what's to come as the top jumpers return to action. Champions Day reflections So, QIPCO British Champions Day was, ultimately, all about emulating Frankel! Cracksman gave his sire a much-needed first Group One win in Europe in the Champion Stakes and Aidan O'Brien, crowned champion trainer, equalled the late American handler’s record of 25 Group/Grade One races in a calendar year. This was the day’s seventh incarnation and again there was much to celebrate and enjoy, with just a few reservations. Cracksman topped the bill, indeed with an Enable-topping performance - according to Timeform, at least. But there were also superb cameos from Order Of St George, Librisa Breeze and Persuasive with the ride of the day saved for the Balmoral Handicap where Danny Tudhope shone on Lord Glitters. Things didn’t quite fall right for a few other stars though, such as Big Orange, who was never going to show his qualities on ground that he clearly hated, and Harry Angel who blew the start in the Sprint and then raced too freely to last home. Honourable mentions must also go to Torcedor, who ran the race of his life, Caravaggio who again finished ahead of Harry Angel, Ribchester for being Ribchester (ie Mr Consistent), Churchill for a welcome return to form and Highland Reel who never gave up on ground that was so wrong for him. It was good to see Silvestre De Sousa acknowledged as an outstanding champion jockey by his peers and the public, although it remains one of the great mysteries as to why he doesn’t get the big-race opportunities that his talent so deserves; he had only one ride on the card. Don’t ask me - I have not met anybody who can explain this anomaly. Well done, too, to Godolphin for becoming champion owner in a season that was far from straightforward for their team. Champions Day fell late in the month this year and the fears that the meeting would be lapped up by Storm Brian were unfounded - just. That said, it seems unsatisfactory that the ground was so testing for such an important day. Sure, it gives those that prefer lots of cut their chance to shine, while Royal week in June tends to present the other side of the coin. There was talk about using the inner course last week – AKA the jumping track, which doesn’t receive an irrigation programme through the summer. In an ideal world that would provide nice easy autumn ground without the extremes. However, using it is not as straightforward as it perhaps should be and I suppose it could create all sorts of issues if, for example, you declared or didn’t declare to run on officially soft/heavy ground when the inner course was only good. Silvestre de Sousa with the Stobart Champion Jockey trophy Silvestre de Sousa remains strangely under-used European Pattern looking rather overcrowded in autumn With a field containing the Ascot Gold Cup first and second, the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup winners and various other top stayers, Saturday’s opening Group Two Long Distance Cup was a proper Group One-class race. The approval for top status must come from the European Pattern Race Committee who would point out that, just 24 hours later, the Group One French St Leger, the Prix Royal-Oak, took place at Saint-Cloud over a pretty similar trip (half a furlong under two miles). So, there's a choice of going for either a bigger purse at Ascot (where the winner received around £93,000 more) or Classic glory in France. Interestingly, Andrew Balding chose the French option for Montaly, the Chester and Lonsdale Cup winner, having saddled Duretto for Ascot. Normally the Royal-Oak is a week after Ascot but, either way, they are uncomfortably close together in the calendar. Both are clearly not going anywhere soon so why can’t they just both be a Group One? Meanwhile, our last domestic Group One of the Flat season, the Racing Post Trophy, takes centre stage at Doncaster on Saturday with Aidan O'Brien bidding to make history of course. But like the above-mentioned stayers' races, there is a glut of similar two-year-old races taking place over the weekend. If Aidan fails at Town Moor, then there are two more Group Ones for the youngsters on the same card at Saint-Cloud just a day later on Sunday. These are the Criterium International over seven furlongs and the Criterium de Saint-Cloud over a mile and a quarter – the only juvenile race at the highest level over that trip in Europe. The International used to be known, until 2000, as the Prix de la Salamandre and its usual home is at Longchamp. It has a rich history of winners such as Miesque, Arazi and Giant's Causeway so I do wonder why they bothered to change the name. Whatever, the pattern is clearly bulging at the seams at this time of the year. Aidan O'Brien Aidan O'Brien: Has declared four for the Racing Post Trophy Here come the jumpers! I am often asked which code I prefer, Flat or National Hunt? Truth is I love them equally and am always happy to see the back of one season only to welcome in the other. But what a blow for Gordon Elliott’s team to lose Fayonagh on Wednesday. I am sure that every jumping fan was stunned and saddened to hear this. Accidents happen and it just goes to show what a tough game this is. But the show moves on and with Cheltenham racing for the first time this weekend, there is no looking back now. Actually, there will be on my part with lots of form checks going on to remind me of what happened during last season. At my age, you can forget! It was great to visit Nicky Henderson’s recently and admire the strength in depth of his wonderful team, with Might Bite leading my list of eagerly awaited comebacks there. Anything could happen with him. I had the chance to chat briefly to the lovely Jessie Harrington at Ascot last Saturday before she sent out Torcedor to run so well. Sizing John and Our Duke have quite different agendas and will be kept apart to begin with, meaning we may well have to wait until the Gold Cup to see them clash. Sizing John will go Haydock, Kempton and Cheltenham and try and secure the £1m bonus while Our Duke will stay in Ireland for the Lexus and Irish Gold Cup. It was good to see Yanworth back at Exeter on Tuesday where he outclassed the talented Sternrubin, although his jumping has room for improvement. Rarely do horses like him have the talent to be as good over two miles or three. But the one horse that has really struck a chord with me in these early weeks has been Samcro, who should be putting the smile back on Gordon Elliott’s face soon. The son of Germany moved like a very good horse and cruised home on his hurdling debut at Punchestown last week and his next race is most eagerly awaited. Samcro Samcro could make a big impression this season Take a bow, Anthony Kemp Anthony Kemp’s voice has been heard at many a racecourse in the south over the years as the official presenter/announcer. "Kempy" is also a talented actor when the time allows, appearing in many a production - which I can tell you are amateur in name only. The thespian was able to show another skill at Kempton on Tuesday night – that of racecaller when John Hunt uncharacteristically got his diary in a muddle. Anthony found himself being called in at the last minute and, with hardly any preparation, did a superb job in the opening nursery. Honestly, it was really good. Commentating? He must wonder what all the fuss is about!

Martyn Meade is hoping to spoil Aidan O'Brien's party at Doncaster on Saturday with Chilean in the Racing Post Trophy. O'Brien fields four of the 12 runners as he goes in search of a 26th Group One winner of the year, which will be a new world record. Hydrangea's victory on Champions Day at Ascot moved O'Brien level with the late Bobby Frankel, but this is his last chance to do it in Britain, with two Group Ones in France 24 hours later before attentions switch further afield. It has not been a bad season for Meade, though, far from it, with Aclaim providing him with a first Group One success and Eminent winning the Craven Stakes, a Group Two in France and going close in the Derby. However, Meade is realistic his Haydock Listed winner needs to take a big leap forward up against the two ante-post favourites for the Derby in the shape of The Pentagon and Saxon Warrior, not to mention Jim Bolger's Verbal Dexterity. "My thinking two months ago was that this would be the perfect race for him as it can cut up and is usually run on bad ground, but it's just our luck this year looks a very good race," said Meade, whose mount will have the assistance in the saddle of Andrea Atzeni, who has won the last four renewals. "Aidan O'Brien has two of the favourites for the Derby and Jim Bolger's horse deserves the utmost respect as a Group One winner, but we can't be frightened off. "Ours is an improving horse and he's strengthened up since Haydock, but he hasn't been tested in Group company. "It would be too much to dream about winning another Group One, but hopefully he'll be thereabouts." Joining The Pentagon and Saxin Warrior for O'Brien are Dewhurst Stakes third Seahenge and Coat Of Arms. Heading the home team is John Gosden's unbeaten Roaring Lion, who will aim to cap an amazing autumn for the trainer after big-race wins for Enable and Cracksman. Charlie Appleby supplemented the once-raced Loxley, while Sir Michael Stoute's Gabr, David Elsworth's Merlin Magic, Alfa Maguire from Bryan Smart's yard and Bolger's Theobald complete the list.

Check out our guide to the runners in Saturday's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, including ten year trends and statistics. Alfa McGuire Good enough to win two novice races but rated only 88, some 29lbs of the best of these, and another zero on his price wouldn't be tempting. Chilean Improved from his maiden to win his novice and a heavy ground Listed race at Haydock (five of his six rivals have been beaten since). Clearly progressive and clearly useful and jockey (Andrea Atzeni) has won the last four renewals but taking on a different calibre of rival and hasn't done enough to suggest he can win this. Coat Of Arms Has achieved a reasonable level of form (rated 101) but was 11 lengths behind Verbal Dexterity two starts back and seems likely to help set the pace for his Ballydoyle stablemates. Gabr Remarkably his trainer (Sir Michael Stoute) has saddled just one winner in this race (Dilshaan in 2000) and there hasn't been enough in his three starts to suggest this nicely bred individual can double the tally. Loxley Powerful yard has enjoyed a fine time with their juveniles and interesting up to a point that they're pitching him in here on just his second start but very difficult to fancy on the back of that Goodwood maiden where he dead-heated for first. Merlin Magic Off the mark at the fourth attempt, earning a rating of 88, and another one who would make little appeal at any price. Roaring Lion Unbeaten in three starts, including when narrowly taking the Group Two Royal Lodge from a Ballydoyle runner last time. Not hard to think that the runner-up that day, Nelson, sits a few rungs below his stablemates lining up here but that's not to say Roaring Lion can't make his presence felt. America seemed a more likely destination for this US bred so interesting John Gosden, who's never trained the winner of this race, sends him here. Saxon Warrior No wins in the last four but Aidan O'Brien has won this race seven times and has a strong hand to close in on Sir Henry Cecil who lifted this prize on 10 occasions. Saxon Warrior is unbeaten in two and the choice of Ryan Moore which would suggest he's the leading contender of four from the yard; the market certainly thinks so. Michael Halford's Casamento and St Nicholas Abbey both won the Beresford Stakes before winning this prize and he could easily become the third colt to complete that double (in the last decade). Seahenge Son of Scat Daddy who is related to winners in the US might reasonably have been expected to be enjoying warmer climes in California rather than being asked to ply his trade in South Yorkshire. Stable second string when third in the Dewhurst Stakes (behind stablemates) last time and similar scenario could pan out here. Theobald Stablemate of leading contender Verbal Dexterity has won one from five and presumably lines up to ensure the pace is kept honest for his stable companion. The Pentagon Almost 20 lengths behind Verbal Dexterity on debut but that form is best ignored given his subsequent performances, namely a wide margin maiden win and Group Three success from Theobald. Shaped like a strong stayer the last day which is no surprise given his stout pedigree and lofty position in the Investec Derby market so should relish this step up to a mile and dangerous to underestimate the difficulty of the decision facing Ryan Moore who has passed him over in favour of Saxon Warrior. Verbal Dexterity Recently described by his trainer as 'the best looking horse in Ireland' but bias aside, there's a good deal to like about this son of Vocalised who was an impressive winner of the Group One National Stakes last time, form which marks him down as the one to beat. Sole defeat came on his one run over six furlongs and not hard to view this step up to a mile as a positive. Reportedly over the setback that ruled him out of the Dewhurst and easy enough to make a case for him on price alone. Click on the image to bet on the Racing Post Trophy with Sky Bet Could Verbal Dexterity provide Jim Bolger with a first Racing Post Trophy success? Key statistics from the last ten renewals Eight winners won their preceding start. All winners had won over at least seven furlongs, eight of whom had won over a mile. Only four winners were unbeaten, of whom, only two had raced more than once. Only four winners made their debut before August but those four - who all ran in July - have come in the last six renewals. Four winners were having their first start in a Group race. No winner has had more than four starts. No winner has been beaten more than twice. Seven favourites have been successful. Conclusion A good race for favourites and a good race for Aidan O'Brien. He hasn't saddled the winner for four years but he hasn't been responsible for the favourite in three of those and last year's beaten jolly Yucatan, who was second, had been beaten by stablemate Capri in the Beresford Stakes on his previous start. O'Brien sends the winner of that Naas race (Saxon Warrior) to England this year and the impression is that this year's principals are much stronger than in the last few renewals. There is, of course, the small matter of that world record to be achieved. Verbal Dexterity is the obvious threat to postponing the celebrations and Jim Bolger's runner is a real threat but although he's given his colt a clean bill of health, it can't be ideal that he was being prepared for the Dewhurst Stakes a fortnight ago and he's consequently passed over for all that he boasts the best form as things stand.

Lame left-fore.
Race 3 - 3:10pm THE BRANDON HILL CAPITAL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3) An enquiry was held to consider interference approaching the final hurdle down the side of the course when there was interference between KK LEXION (IRE), placed third, ridden by Mr N George, and CREEP DESBOIS (FR), unplaced, ridden by Daryl Jacob. Being a 7lb amateur rider Mr George was offered the chance to be accompanied in the enquiry, but declined. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. Being a 6lb claimer, Stock was accompanied in the enquiry by the trainer, Martin Keighley. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. The Stewards considered that the interference was accidental and had not improved BOBBLE EMERALDS’s placing as the gelding had been carried sharply right-handed across the course by the loose HIGH EXPECTATIONS (FR), and after the interference, the winner appeared to have more in reserve and was pulling away at the line, with 2 lengths between the two horses at the post.
