Newmarket: Anthony Burke
Roaring Lion (3.25 Doncaster, nap)
The John Gosden-trained colt showed real determination to land the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket last time. That effort put him firmly in the frame for this race and with more improvement expected he holds solid credentials here.
Others to follow Doncaster 1.45 Mutaaqeb, 2.20 Al Hajar, 2.55 Ooty Hill, 4.00 Spring Loaded, 4.35 Sir Dancealot, 5.10 Ocean Air. Newbury 1.10 Birch Grove, 1.40 New Empire, 2.15 Frontiersman, 2.50 Mythical Magic, 3.20 Abdon, 3.55 Hikmaa, 4.30 Sudona, 5.05 Bybrook. Wolverhampton 6.15 Miss Rosina, 6.45 Perfect Spy, 7.45 Wiff Waff, 8.15 Walk On Walter, 8.45 Dreaming Time, 9.15 Spinnaka.
7/1 Roaring Lion 3:25 Doncaster Lambourn: James Burn
Nebo (2.50 Newbury, nap)
Smart juvenile has hit the crossbar a few times at Group level this term but this looks a good opportunity to strike with Frankie Dettori booked to ride for the first time.
Others to follow Cheltenham 3.45 Thomas Campbell, 4.20 Cultivator, 5.30 Cracking Destiny. Doncaster 1.45 Red Roman, 2.20 Rogue, 2.55 Burguillos, 4.35 Jallota. Newbury 1.10 Mille Tank, 2.15 Danehill Kodiac, 3.20 Storm Rock, 3.55 Magnolia Springs. Wolverhampton 7.45 Swing Out Sister.
10/3 Nebo 2:50 Newbury North: Colin Russell
Buckled (4.40 Kelso, nap)
Better over hurdles than fences and having shaped well on testing ground on his reappearance at Perth last month is fancied to go close on today's good ground.
Others to follow Cheltenham 2.35 Golden Jeffrey, 3.10 Double W's, 5.30 The Road Home. Doncaster 1.45 Staxton, 2.20 Big Les, 2.55 Rainbow Rebel, 3.25 Alfa Maguire, 4.00 Boundsy, 4.35 Intisaab, 5.10 Hajjam. Kelso 1.20 Echo Express, 1.50 Some Reign, 2.25 Big River, 3.00 Wakanda, 3.35 Desert Island Dusk, 4.05 Doktor Glaz, 5.15 Professor Plum. Newbury 1.40 Prestbury Park, 2.50 Dream Today, 3.55 Miss Bar Beach, 4.30 Endless Tangent, 5.05 Tawseef. Wolverhampton 5.45 Rapid Ranger, 6.15 Mr Enthusiastic, 6.45 Taylor's Row, 7.15 Angel In The Snow, 7.45 Jasi, 8.15 Midsummer Knight, 8.45 Rock N Rolla, 9.15 Lord Commander.
3/1 Buckled 4:40 Kelso Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Johanos (3.45 Cheltenham)
Enjoyed a couple of wide-margin victories in March and although this is tougher, Nigel Hawke's improving six-year-old should not be underestimated.
14/1 Johanos 3:45 Cheltenham West Country: Andrew King
Whataknight (3.45 Cheltenham, nap)
Should have derived benefit for seasonal return and can make his presence tell as a result.
Others to follow Cheltenham 2.00 Doing Fine, 3.10 Vaniteux 4.20 Alcala 4.55 Robbin Hannon, 5.30 Ainchea.
10/1 Whataknight 3:45 Cheltenham Racing Post Ratings: Steve Mason
Some Reign (1.50 Kelso, nap)
Shaped like a certain future winner behind a smart type over course and distance earlier this month and this looks an ideal opportunity for him to go one better.
8/13 Some Reign 1:50 Kelso Longshot: Ed Quigley
Lamb Or Cod (2.00 Cheltenham)
His last run was too bad to be true and the ten-year-old has ground conditions to suit, winning form at the track and is capable off a mark of 130.
20/1 Lamb Or Cod 2:00 Cheltenham Ireland: Tony O'Hehir
Mawaany (4.50 Leopardstown)
The Ger Lyons-trained four-year-old, who won twice over shorter trips early in the year, has performed well over 1m4f and ran as if today's return to that distance would suit when beaten a neck on his most recent start at the Curragh. He appears to be adaptable in terms of ground and can score for Colin Keane.

If overcoming the issues that have sidelined her for a year Mountain Bell can go well in the 2.15 at Newbury. She has won off a long absence before and ran well to finish second in this race last year. She is still lightly raced and open to improvement.
When Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni combine at Doncaster they operate at a 28 per cent strike-rate. The trainer sends just one runner to the track, Atletico, in the 4.00. He didn’t get the clearest of runs last time out and can make amends.
Oregon Gift can go well in the 6.45 at Wolverhampton for Brian Ellison and Ben Robinson, who have a 40 per cent strike-rate when combining at the track. He looks on a winnable mark based on his third here three starts ago.

Nutini 5.45 Wolverhampton
9/4 Nutini 5:45 Wolverhampton (AW) The lenient 3lb rise incurred for a fluent Windsor win last time is negated by Joshua Bryan’s 3lb claim.
Nutini was backed as if defeat was out of the question that day, and seems sure to make the boldest of bids from a favourable inside draw.

IN TODAY'S SPORTING LIFE................ ![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/e807679c-72c9-4785-85b8-6692708288f8.jpg) The popular Catching Pigeons column returns with a round-up of all the gossip and tips from the major training centres. Strongest fancies 1.10 Newbury, Saturday 5 14 Expensive Liaison24 29-0OR: - 2/1 Form: 5T: H PalmerJ: James Doyle Last run Live betting powered by 3.45 Cheltenham, Saturday 4 Thomas Campbell182 511-1OR: 138BFC 4/1 Form: 115547-T: N J HendersonJ: Nico de Boinville Last run Live betting powered by 3.00 Aintree, Sunday 11 Shantou Village183 710-6OR: 148D 11/2 Form: P/11F11-T: N P MulhollandJ: N D Fehily Last run Some riders may have taken to wearing miner's head lamps when working in the early mornings in Newmarket but one or two horses have stood out in the gloom this week, including Sir Michael Stoute's Queen's Trust. She worked particularly stylishly on the Round Gallop last Saturday just prior to the Limekilns closing for the winter and she heads to Del Mar to defend her Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf crown in rude health. This year's form on rain-soaked ground can be forgotten and the quick surface out on the West Coast should be more up her street. Quite whether this year's event being only nine furlongs, rather than 10 at Sanita Anita 12 months ago, will play to her strengths remains to be seen, however. James Garfield, Marsha and Roger Varian's Madeline have also been put through their paces before shipping to America, while the Hugo Palmer-trained Melbourne Cup hope Wall Of Fire looks well in himself and will be ridden by Aussie ace Craig Williams in the 'race that stops a nation'. Queen's Trust Queen's Trust is heading back to the Breeders' Cup Closer to home, the once-raced Orsera has been sparkling in her work since scoring first time out at Leicester and is a name to note, while Palmer's Corrosive also looks to be building towards something very positive in the next week or so. Owen Burrows is having an unmistakably positive season and his Mutaaqeb can overcome his lack of experience to win the Listed Bet Through The Racing Post Doncaster Stakes on Town Moor on Saturday. Burrows is never in any rush with his two-year-olds as you might expect from a former Stoute assistant, and it is interesting he has chosen a race at this level for his second start, rather than a lower key novice event. Well fancied to go close on his debut at Yarmouth last month, Mutaaqeb was tardy away from the gate and then ran green in the first half of the race. He still had just one behind him approaching the two furlong pole, but he then started to get the hang of things, having cut down the leeway, produced a smart burst of acceleration to take him into the lead close home. His subsequent work has been of a high order, suggesting that he should be up to defying his penalty. Gabr is expected to give a good account in the same silks for Stoute in the Racing Post Trophy Stakes but John Gosden has the best chance of fending off the Irish battalions with Roaring Lion. Gosden has been looking longingly at this race for the unbeaten son Kitten's Joy for a while now and though connections half-considered the opportunity to go to Del Mar, it appears Gosden has got his way. The colt has thrived since beating Nelson in the Royal Lodge and can cement his place among the best juvenile prospects on this side of the Irish Sea. Spring Loaded is worth sticking with in the Sun Bets Responsible Betting Handicap after a seemingly unlucky York second when leaving it fractionally too late, while Robin Weathers get another vote in this column with the assistance of promising apprentice Darragh Keenan in the Alan Wood Plumbing & Heating Apprentice Jockeys' Training Series Final Handicap. Expensive Liaison can step up on his debut effort for Palmer in he Conundrum EBF Fillies Stakes (Div I) at Newbury. There was plenty to like about his debut effort at Nottingham three and a half weeks ago, where he stayed on in nicely to finish fifth to Fayrouz Rose. His poor draw didn't help him that day, and we should see a more accomplished performance here with the benefit of that outing behind him. Shepherd Market can improve her strike-rate to 50% in the Listed Bathwick Tyres Stakes. This often presents a tough test for a filly with the ground usually riding on the slow side for the final Flat meeting of the season, but this daughter of Reckless Abandon should handle the conditions well. Her form looks very solid, and her close second to Aim Of Artemis at Leicester last month has been made to look good by the third Tivoli’s subsequent win at Kempton. She is open to further improvement and may prove just too good for Ed Vaughan's Hikmaa and the less experienced Magnolia Springs, an impressive winner here last month. Brian Meehan is always keen to target his local course for his two-year-olds and the well-regarded Spirit Of Appin is expected to run a big race on her debut in division two of the same race. She is a daughter of Champs Elysee out of a Barathea mare trained by his next door neighbour Roger Charlton, and if looks were everything, she would be very good The one to watch is John Gosden's Highgarden, who is thought to be a nice type for 2018 but may just benefit from her first look at a racecourse. Frontiersman isn't the most straightforward horse in training but is fancied to outpoint Ayrad in the Worthington's "Indigo Leisure" Stakes, best known as the St Simon. Charlie Appleby's four-year-old isn't far off Group One class when right on song and his narrow win over Red Galileo at Newmarket last time should have done his confidence some good. Frontiersman Frontiersman Singlefarmpayment has shown his liking for this course in the past and is just preferred to Doing Fine in the randoxhealth.com Handicap Chase at Cheltenham. Tom George's charge looked a staying chaser with a big future last season and only just failed to win the big handicap at the Festival here in March. At only seven, he looks to have more scope than most in this field and he could well become a leading contender for next month's inaugural Ladbrokes Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy) with a big run here. Thomas Campbell came to hand early for Nicky Henderson last season and he should go close on his return to action in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle qualifier. The five-year-old won a maiden hurdle on his comeback last season but, even though he produced some respectable efforts later in the campaign, gave the impression he is best when fresh. He looks reasonably weighted on the best of his form and, though he is not the biggest, should be able to progress further. On The Blind Side can initiate a double for Henderson in the opening Maiden Hurdle at Aintree on Sunday. The champion trainer believes this son of Stowaway has a big future and makes his hurdling debut after winning an Irish point to point in the manner of a potentially smart individual last term. The form of the race has worked out very well and his work this atumn has been very good. Burbank is the one taken to complete the Seven Barrows brace in the Free Spins at 188Bet Casino Handicap Hurdle. A consistent and very talented performer in novice events last season, he has grown and strengthened up during the summer. Although he often hit a flat spot in his races before running on during his debut campaign, connections put this down to greenness and believe he will be a more mature individual this season. Bags Groove, who should be better suited to this course than Chepstow two weeks ago, could be the danger. Shantou Village is fancied at Aintree on Sunday Shantou Village can make the most of his lightweight in the 188Bet Old Roan Limited Handicap Chase. A high-class novice hurdler two seasons ago, he was expected to take high rank among the young chasers last term and duly delivered three wins from four starts However, the word from the Tony Mulholland camp throughout the campaign was that he was not quite the horse he was the previous season and, despite the healthy strike rate, much more is expected. Connections seem much happier with his condition this term and even though he should come on for this run he should go close in this competitive event with the ground drying in his favour.

Racing Post Trophy Stakes, 3.25 Doncaster Click here for the full racecard and free video form Aidan O'Brien - Saxon Warrior, Seahenge, The Pentagon and Coat Of Arms "Saxon Warrior seems to be in good form since Naas. Hopefully the ground will be nice there. Obviously Seahenge only ran (recently) in the Dewhurst, but he seems to be in good form since. "The Pentagon has had a bit of a break since his run the last time in the Tyros. He seems to be in good form and is just ready to start back. "Coat Of Arms is in good form. He had a good run when second in the Futurity and is stepping up to a mile now." Jim Bolger - Verbal Dexterity "I'm very much looking forward to it. Obviously he couldn't run in the Dewhurst because his scope wasn't 100 per cent, but he's ready again now. The ground looks like being good so there's no problems on that score. Hopefully he'll win again, we'll give it our best shot." David Redvers, Qatar Racing manager - Roaring Lion "He seems to have improved throughout the season. We had the option of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, but Mr Gosden felt very strongly that if the ground at Doncaster was reasonable then he would like to go there. "We won the race with Elm Park three years ago and had a great day up there. Roaring Lion is very different to Elm Park, but goes to Doncaster with a stronger chance, if anything. I'm very optimistic." Charlie Appleby - Loxley "I was pleased with his work on Wednesday. I know it is a step up for him, but we feel he won't look out of place and hopefully he can run into a place. He came out of Goodwood so well and looking at him as an individual he looks so well and his work has been good since, it is just trying to get a level on him for next season." Jim Crowley, jockey - Gabr "I rode him work last week and he went really well. He's getting better with experience, the horse he beat (Istanbul Sultan) came out and won at Goodwood, so he's going the right way. I thought he worked super, but it's a different ball game going into a Group One." Martyn Meade - Chilean "If it had been proper soft ground it would have just inconvenienced some of the others and we know ours handles it. He did win fairly comfortably at Haydock, but he does need to step up as it looks an exceptionally tough renewal, certainly compared to last year. "The ground being good means those well-bred horses will be more at home, but we can't do anything about that." Worthington's 'Indigo Leisure' Stakes, 2.15 Newbury Click here for the full racecard and free video form Charlie Appleby - Frontiersman "His work was good on Wednesday and it was just a case of keeping an eye on the ground. Although he won on good to soft at Newmarket, he has been beaten on soft ground twice at Newbury. "He has come out of his last race well. We pitched him in this race last year, but it was probably at that stage of his career where it was a bit too soon. If he puts a performance in like he did on his last start at Newmarket he will be bang up there." Saeed bin Suroor - Best Solution "Best Solution has always run his best races on softer ground, so conditions at Newbury should suit. This looks a good race for him in terms of class and trip. He has been working well and has a good chance." Tony Nerses, racing manager for owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar - Ayrad "He's been doing good and took the race very well. We are very happy with his condition and the way he came back. He's run over a mile an a half in the past and I don't think the distance is an issue. "He's a Group-class horse but somehow things haven't gone right for him for whatever reason. He's been knocking on the door but so far it hasn't happened." Bruce Raymond, racing manager for owner Saeed Suhail - Across The Stars "He's in the best shape he's been in all year." Ralph Beckett - Mountain Bell "She had a problem earlier in the season, which is why she has not been seen out before now, but I am happy with the way she is now. There was a lot to like about her performances last year and she showed she was very tough." Brian Meehan - Raheen House "He ran a great race last time out at Ascot having deservedly won the Listed race. He has been in cracking form since and I hope he can be just as competitive again." randoxhealth.com Handicap Chase, 2.00 Cheltenham Click here for full racecard and free video form Tom George - Singlefarmpayment "He came back from his summer break looking good and we are happy with him at the moment. We said we will take each step as it comes this season, depending on how the horse is, and see where we go. "He progressed well last season and it will be interesting to see if he can carry that on this season." Neil Mulholland - Doing Fine "Ideally we'd probably have liked a little bit longer between races, but he seems to have come out of the hurdle race well and we're happy with him at home. Hopefully he'll come on for the run and he likes Cheltenham, so fingers crossed he'll run well." On Fiddlers Green - Henry De Bromhead "The soft going probably went against On Fiddlers Green in the Munster National, so I am hoping the better ground will suit and that he can run a good race." Randox Health Handicap Chase, 3.10 Cheltenham Click here for full racecard and free video form David Pipe - Vaniteux "He's in good form and he does everything at home as you'd expect. It's a tough ask off top weight, but he has some good form around Cheltenham and it's a good starting point, so we'll see how we go." Henry De Bromhead - Some Plan "I hope that the return to two miles will suit. He was very disappointing and didn't seem to stay the last day. He was kept busy last season and had a great first half, winning three races and then just seemed to peter out. He has beaten some very good chasers and is a fair horse on his day." Malcolm Jefferson's daughter, Ruth - Double W's "He always improves from his first run. Last year he was beaten in a handicap hurdle at Hexham. We've been happy with him since Kelso. He worked very well on Wednesday and we're happy to have a go." Masterson Holdings Hurdle, 2.35 Cheltenham Click here for full racecard and free video form Henry De Bromhead - Twobeelucky "I think that this will be Twobeelucky's final run before he goes off for a break. We are up against it on the ratings, but we said that we would give it a go and see how we get on." Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Novices' Chase, 4.20 Cheltenham Click here for full racecard and free video form Charlie Longsdon - Midnight Shot "He's had a great year and he's a tough and hardy old brute who loves his jumping. It's a tough ask with the Nicholls horse in the race, but we're going there in good form and we're looking forward to it."

![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/56d6b045-4ae9-4b8c-94b9-98b39a3d2a9c.jpg) Oli Bell looks ahead to a fantastic day's racing in both codes and provides his selections for all the live ITV action, with Coologue fancied at Cheltenham. This weekend’s racing has something for everyone, with both Flat and jumps racing on ITV's bumper live card. Events at Doncaster are likely to capture the attentions and imaginations of fans of both disciplines as Aidan O’Brien attempts to create history. The Ballydoyle supremo drew level with legendary trainer Bobby Frankel for most G1's in a calendar year at Ascot last weekend when Hydrangea won the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes to land O'Brien's 25th Group 1 triumph of the season. Aidan's achievement this term is already remarkable in his own right, but - with a talented set of entries at Doncaster - he is on the cusp of an unbelievable achievement in passing his late American compatriot's 2003 landmark. There are still a lot of Group 1s in the calendar this year, including the likes of the Breeders' Cup and races in Hong Kong and Australia. Aidan could be looking at nearly 30 Group 1 winners in 12 months, when some trainers are lucky to get 30 winners of any description. People will be asking "what does this actually mean to Aidan O’Brien?". The mark of the man and the trainer is that the reaction to this phenomenal record will be greater from the public. No doubt he may open a good bottle of wine at home on Saturday night, but he will already be thinking about what his yard needs to be doing the next day, what preparations still need to be made for the Breeders' Cup and how he needs to organise his horses. That attention to detail and forward-thinking attitude is why he is so good. There is no doubting that Aidan has had some of the best-bred horses at his disposal, but on a number of occasions this year he has displayed that he really gets the best out of every animal. What he has done with US Navy Flag this season for me sums up his mastery. Aidan O’Brien’s bid to create another extraordinary chapter in the sport will be a big story throughout the day, right from The Opening Show on ITV4 at 9.30am to the end of the day of our live afternoon coverage on the same channel. Follow ITV Racing ✔@itvracing We're at @cheltenhamraces, @newburyracing + @doncasterraces on Saturday! Can Aidan O'Brien get his record breaking win? Join us 1:30pm @itv4 2:49 PM - Oct 27, 2017 3 3 Replies 8 8 Retweets 16 16 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy Rishi Persad kicks us off in the morning, while I’ll be at Cheltenham from 1.30pm, where I’m delighted to say that Alice Plunkett, Mick Fitzgerald and Luke Harvey will all be back and in action to kick off jumps Racing this winter. For many people, the return of racing at Cheltenham means the return of the jumps season and we’ll be bringing you four competitive races. Sally Ann Grassick and Jason Weaver will be at Doncaster for three races, with the card completed by a further two at Newbury. Take a look at who I’m tipping this week... 1.45 Doncaster - Bet Through The Racing Post App Doncaster Stakes, 6f 2y Mutaaqeb is the horse I like in this race. He really impressed me when winning at Yarmouth on soft ground in his first run last month. The two-year-old looked green early on, but he quickened up nicely to show a good attitude to beat Rule Of Honour by a neck, with the front two pulling clear. I’m not sure it was the strongest of races in behind but I was taken by what I saw from Mutaaqeb and I think there could be plenty more to come. Trainer Owen Burrows had a winner at Kempton on Tuesday evening, having only lost his father the night before. I was delighted to see Tashaaboh first past the post and, on the back of such sad news, I have no doubt that whoever people back they would be pleased to see Owen in the winners' enclosure again on Saturday. Owen is a really good guy, he’s always really polite and gives up his time for us and he’s a very talented trainer. Mutaaqeb has a strong chance of running a really big race. 2.00 Cheltenham - randoxhealth.com Handicap Chase, 3m 1f Given what he did in the race 12 months ago then my fancy in this race is Coologue. He was victorious in the corresponding race last year off the same mark as he races off on Saturday and it was, like this time around, his first run of the campaign so it is an identical set of circumstances. At around 10/1 I think that’s more then fair and he’s a good each way play. Obviously horses above him in the betting such as Singlefarmpayment and Doing Fine command a lot of respect and are potentially thrown in but I doubt Saturday’s race is there Gold Cup and so at the prices Coologue easily makes the most appeal. 2.15 - Newbury - Worthington’s Indigo Leisure Stakes, 1m 4f For all that Raheen House impressed in victory last time out at Ascot, I think Frontiersman is the best horse in the race. I’ve been as guilty as anyone for calling Charlie Appleby’s hope a few names this season, but it was good to see him back on track when winning at Newmarket last month, restoring confidence and getting notable form to his name. I’m still not completely convinced by him and I still would have the pillow in front of my face during the final furlong, but you’re getting a good price for a horse with quality. When you lay it all on the table and ask "who’s the best horse" you will always pick Frontiersman, in my opinion. If you do that in horse racing you will win more than you lose. 2.35 Cheltenham - Masterson Holdings Hurdle Race, 2m 87y I’ll keep this one brief. It’s a real shame Defi Du Sueil isn’t lining up because he is a horse I think will really serve it up to the Champion hurdlers this campaign. With him not running the market has Bedrock as favourite and whilst this horse has a serious engine, his hurdling is a concern and so I would look at the Irish raider Twobelucky as the most likely winner. 2.50 Newbury - Bathwick Tyres Handicap Stakes, 7f I really like Dream Today. I actually tipped him in this column for September’s Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on the back of a very impressive win in the Convivial Maiden Stakes. He disappointed, but he bounced back last time out. That's not uncommon for horses to put in a very good performance in their first race only to find it something of a culture shock when they move into better company. With that experience last month under his belt, Mark Johnston’s two-year-old showed his true colours when second in a Group 3 at Newmarket nearly a fortnight ago. I think Dream Today is a good horse, he will be a lot more streetwise now and he will go pretty close. 3.10 Cheltenham - Randox Health Handicap Steeple Chase, 1m 7f Sizing Platinum will be very hard to beat and is my bet of the day. He was excellent in victory at Newton Abbot at the beginning of the month, he’s got fitness on his side and won’t mind if there’s any rain in the air. I don’t think he will be taken on for the lead either, so the race will be ran to suit. Colin Tizzard’s nine-year-old finished second in this race last year when he ran into a certain handicapper called Fox Norton, the pair finishing nine lengths ahead of Casino Markets. This is a good opportunity for jockey Bryan Cooper to shine for new boss Alan Potts, following up glory on Finian's Oscar at Chepstow. 3.25 Doncaster - Racing Post Trophy Stakes, 1m Going on the jockey booking of Ryan Moore, you would think Saxon Warrior is the most likely to set the Group 1 winners record for Aidan O’Brien. Verbal Dexterity is a good horse, coming out on top against Beckford last time out on soft ground. Kevin Manning rides again, while Jim Bolger is a genius trainer. I do think he can serve it up, with the caveat being that he was meant to run in the Dewhurst Stakes last month only for a bad scope to rule him out. Providing he’s okay, he will challenge Saxon Warrior and I think it will be a fight between the two. 3.45 Cheltenham - Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle Race, 2m 7f 208y I’m going for Holly Bush Henry, who I think has more to offer. His victories at Worcester and Plumpton may not have been in great races, but nevertheless he’s won his last two starts and is really hitting his straps now after not showing a lot in the summer. Mitch Bastyan – who was educated at Huish Episcopi, not too far from where I grew up in South Somerset – takes off a valuable 7lb and I think the Phil Middleton-trained horse can run well at a decent price. This year there is a number of very talented young riders, with the likes of James Bowen and Fergus Gregory, who had a winner for Olly Murphy at Southwell on Thursday, to name two. Mitch is very much up there. 4.00 Doncaster - Sun Bets Responsible Betting Handicap Stakes, 5f 3y Lincoln is the horse I’m backing to round off a busy – and hopefully successful – Saturday. He’s got good form on soft ground, if that’s the way the conditions go. He’s won at Doncaster before, he had a break and then came back at the start of the month following four months off to come third at Ascot behind Erissimus Maximus. I think with that run under his belt and off the back of a break he’s an each-way player, even though you can make a case for a number of horses in this race.

![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/5970a4fa-c4b7-46c3-a29f-ba286326edf2.jpg) After a big-priced winner last Saturday, don't miss Ben Linfoot's latest Value Bets covering the feature action at Cheltenham and Doncaster. It’s the final Group One of the British season on Saturday as the Racing Post Trophy takes place at Doncaster and Aidan O’Brien saddles four as he aims to break that Bobby Frankel record. He looks to have two really solid chances in Saxon Warrior and The Pentagon, too, so he could well walk away from Town Moor with an eighth Racing Post Trophy as well as the world record for Group One wins in a calendar year in the bag. Jim Bolger’s Verbal Dexterity looks to be the main danger, while Andrea Atzeni is going for his fifth consecutive win in the race, all for different trainers, as he rides Martyn Meade’s Chilean. He’s not without a chance, either, but Chilean does have to prove himself on this better ground after improving bundles last time when running away with a Listed contest on Haydock heavy. A win for O’Brien or Atzeni would ensure the ITV cameras a special story, but if it doesn’t happen for the Sardinian jockey in the feature he could still enhance his brilliant Doncaster record in the supporting races, starting in the Listed Bet Through The Racing Post App Doncaster Stakes that opens the card at 1.45. This race has a nice shape to it from a punting point of view, as the only piece of form that entitles Rebel Assault to be an 11/4 favourite is her Rockingham Stakes win at York last time. She showed a good attitude that day, but that was her eighth run and the favourite, Shabaaby, was desperately disappointing so I’m not sure it’s form to put your faith in. Staxton was third in that race, further evidence he hasn’t progressed from his Gimcrack fifth, and with those two in the top four in the betting I want to back something that has the potential to improve past them. Mutaaqeb is a likely type following his debut win at Yarmouth, but at a bigger price I prefer the claims of that man Atzeni on Marco Botti’s SPEAK IN COLOURS at 8/1 generally. Botti won this race a couple of years ago with Dhahmaan and he looks to have targeted it once again with this good-looking grey son of Excelebration, who hails from the family of the talented Tullius. He improved from his highly-promising Nottingham debut when winning at Ascot last time, a race in which he displayed a smart turn of foot to defeat subsequent Goodwood winner Lady Dancealot. There was talk of the Mill Reef Stakes after that, which he was entered in, but it looks a smart move to have waited for something lower-key and he has enormous scope for improvement. He’s had 50 days off since his last run, was keen last time and I see no reason why he shouldn’t handle better ground. I certainly think he’s got the raw talent to have a say at this level and at 8/1 he looks a good bet to trouble those at the top of the market. Later on the card Atzeni has another good chance aboard ATLETICO (14/1 General) in the Sun Bets Responsible Betting Handicap at 4.00. This horse remains highly unexposed and I really like how he shaped at York last time after a few months off. He had little chance as the groups merged, Silvestre de Sousa having to weave between horses, but he ran on promisingly enough to be beaten just over five lengths in eighth. That’s no consolation if you were one of the punters that backed him into 5/1 favouritism that day, the fifth consecutive race for which he’s gone off market leader, but that just shows you the regard he’s held in. I think he can start repaying that faith soon, though, and Saturday could well be the day. On his form at Windsor and Goodwood in the summer he’s got a live chance off his slightly reduced mark of 91 while he’s entitled to come on for that York run, his first for eight weeks. Roger Varian, whose horses are still running well as they have done all season, has won this race before with Steps, and Just Glamorous should tow the far-side horses into this nicely. Roger Varian's Atletico looks a bet However, I do want a second string to my bow and with plenty of pace drawn middle to stands’ side it makes sense to take one of the high numbers as well so, though I was tempted by the fresher-than-most Lincoln, I am going to roll the dice and back Richard Hannon’s TOMILY at 28/1 with bet365 (25/1 General). This horse was stone last when he ran at Windsor, but the softer ground went against him that day and he has been given plenty of time to recover since. Last year he disappointed at Royal Ascot but then had a similar break after which he ran really well during an autumn campaign, including a second in the Listed two-year-old race on this card. Rated 99 after that, he acquitted himself well on the all-weather earlier in the year but has largely struggled on turf since which has seen his mark drop to 91. He is capable on turf, though. Last year’s Listed second here at Doncaster shows that, as well as his running-on fourth (beaten half-a-length) at Sandown off 95 in the summer. Of course, he is a horse that needs plenty to go his way, as you would expect for a 25/1 chance. But running off a strong gallop on the stands’ side wing, on good ground, with Hollie Doyle taking 3lb off his already career-low mark, means there is enough in his favour to have a go at big odds. Finally, good ground at Prestbury Park will be a crucial factor on day two of Cheltenham's first meeting of winter. Hopefully that will be the case for ON FIDDLERS GREEN in the opening randoxhealth.com Handicap Chase as he looks overpriced at 16/1 (General). Henry de Bromhead's horse improved for the switch to his new trainer last year, winning two of his first four starts for the yard on good ground including a big-field handicap at the Galway Festival where he jumped stylishly for an easy success. He won a decent pot this summer, too, in the Connacht National at Roscommon, before getting stuck in the mud on his last two starts. Back on better ground he can resume his upward curve, as this strong traveller and sound jumper looks just the type to relish the test that a truly-run handicap around Cheltenham provides. Colin Tizzard's pair are a danger and it looks as though the Dorset trainer is hitting the ground running again after five winners in the last seven days. With that in mind it's worth backing his TEMPESTATEFLORESCO in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle at a tasty-looking 14/1 (General). This horse is fit from a summer campaign where he landed the Listed Summer Cup over fences at Uttoxeter in July, a competitive affair that he won comfortably after his stamina came to the fore. The mix of a staying test on good ground really brought the best out in him and with that firmly in my thoughts he's of major interest now he steps up in trip over timber. He's switched to novice hurdling well after plying his trade in points and over fences for most of his career and he's been let in lightly for his handicap debut over hurdles. A mark of 137 is 8lb lower than his chase rating and he looks well capable of taking advantage now he tackles a trip on a decent surface. Following the race, Daryl Jacob reported that KERRY'S BOY (IRE), which was pulled up, stopped quickly. View Stewards report Doncaster, 28 Oct 17 Race 1 - 1:45pm THE BET THROUGH THE RACING POST APP DONCASTER STAKES (CLASS 1) (Listed Race) On the run to the line the winner, SPEAK IN COLOURS, edged right whilst racing greenly causing STAXTON, placed third, to be briefly eased, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of SPEAK IN COLOURS.
Race 2 - 2:20pm THE SCOTT DOBSON MEMORIAL NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3) An enquiry was held into why two helicopters landed in close succession whilst the runners were both in the Parade Ring and on the way to the start for the second race. The Clerk of the Course and the Racecourse Operations Manager were interviewed. It was noted that adequate instructions had been given to the pilots not to land whilst horses were on the course and that the Racecourse would be writing to the aviation company which own the helicopters in order to seek assurances from them that in the future they would adhere to BHAGI 3.1.4 concerning aircraft taking off and landing at racecourses.
Approximately 2½ furlongs out, BIG LES, unplaced, was steadied and switched left when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MONT KINABALU (IRE), unplaced, which resulted in LADY ANJORICA (IRE), placed third, being crowded for room which in turn caused BEE INA BONNET, unplaced to be hampered. After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held to consider interference inside the final furlong when ZAP, placed second, ridden by Adam McNamara caused interference to MONT KINABALU (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Tom Eaves. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. McNamara was suspended for 2 days for careless riding, as after initially being influenced inwards by ROGUE, placed fourth, ridden by Ryan Moore, he continued to manoeuvre left when insufficiently clear of MONT KINABALU (IRE), causing that runner to be checked.
Following the race, Adam McNamara reported that ZAP, placed second, was denied a clear run.
Race 3 - 2:55pm THE crownhotel-bawtry.com HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) Permission was given for OOTY HILL to go early to post.

The performance of LUSTROUS LIGHT (IRE) which finished unplaced, was considered. The representative of Ralph Beckett could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of LUSTROUS LIGHT (IRE) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 4 - 3:25pm THE RACING POST TROPHY STAKES (CLASS 1) (Group 1) An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 4 furlongs out when the winner, SAXON WARRIOR (JPN), ridden by Ryan Moore drifted left causing interference to ALFA MCGUIRE (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Graham Lee, which in turn caused interference to THE PENTAGON (IRE), placed third, ridden by Seamie Heffernan. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. Moore was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift left when insufficiently clear of ALFA MCGUIRE (IRE) causing it to take a slight check and become unbalanced, before shifting left and inconveniencing THE PENTAGON (IRE).
Approaching the final furlong there was interference between ROARING LION (USA), placed second, which hung left and the winner SAXON WARRIOR (JPN) which edged slightly right. There was further interference approaching the half furlong marker when ROARING LION (USA), hung violently left despite the rider’s best efforts to correct it, taking SAXON WARRIOR (JPN) off its intended line. After viewing a recording of the incidents, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Following the race, Oisin Murphy reported that ROARING LION (USA), placed second, hung left under pressure.
Race 5 - 4:00pm THE SUN BETS RESPONSIBLE BETTING HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) Permission was given for RASHEEQ (IRE) and BOUNDSY (IRE) to go early to post.

The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. Hanagan was cautioned for careless riding as he switched right when insufficiently clear causing GLOBAL APPLAUSE to be slightly checked in its run.
Approximately 1½ furlongs out, CONFESSIONAL, placed fourth, shifted quickly right away from the whip, tightening up RASHEEQ (IRE), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of CONFESSIONAL.

The winner, TEMPLE MAN, appeared to show an improvement in form, compared with its previous run at Kelso on 8 October 2017, where the gelding finished fifth of twelve beaten 39 lengths. The explanation of the trainer’s representative was noted that the gelding had stripped fitter from its previous run, which had followed a 10-month break. TEMPLE MAN was routine tested.

After viewing a recording of the fall, it was found that no other horse or rider was involved and was caused by the gelding jinking at the crossing.
Race 4 - 3:00pm THE EDF-ER STEEPLE CHASE (A LIMITED HANDICAP) (CLASS 2) An enquiry was held to establish why a fork had been left propped against the kick board of the open ditch on the first circuit of this race. The Clerk of the Course, the Head Groundsman and rider Henry Brooke were interviewed. Race 5 - 3:35pm THE SIR MAXWELL HARPER GOW MEMORIAL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (Qualifier for the Northern Lights Two Mile Hurdle Series) The winner, MEADOWCROFT BOY, appeared to show an improvement in form, compared with its previous run at Perth on 2 August 2017 where the gelding finished ninth of ten beaten 53 lengths. The trainer’s explanation was noted that the gelding appreciated the drop back in trip to 2 miles and the drier ground on this occasion. MEADOWCROFT BOY was routine tested.

However, after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that it did not involve a riding offence.
Following the race, Jamie Hamilton reported that EXIT TO FREEDOM, which was pulled up, had lost its action. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities. Following the race, Noel Garbutt reported that NEW EMPIRE ran too free, and James Doyle reported that PRESTBURY PARK (USA) hung right-handed from 2 furlongs out.
Race 3 - 2:15pm THE WORTHINGTON'S "INDIGO LEISURE" STAKES (CLASS 1) (Registered as The St Simon Stakes) (GROUP 3) Permission was given for ARCHITECTURE (IRE) to wear a hood in the Parade Ring.

Following the race, Frankie Dettori reported that WESTERN HYMN, unplaced, clipped heels and stumbled in the back straight approximately 2 furlongs after the start, and Josephine Gordon reported that ARCHITECTURE (IRE), unplaced, ran flat. The representative of Charlie Appleby reported that FRONTIERSMAN was unsuited by the Soft ground and would prefer a quicker surface.
Race 4 - 2:50pm THE BATHWICK TYRES STAKES (CLASS 1) (Registered as the Horris Hill Stakes) (GROUP 3) Permission was given for MYTHICAL MAGIC (IRE) to wear a hood in the Parade Ring.
The Starter reported TANGLED (IRE) trained by Richard Hannon, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer was informed that the colt could not run until the day after passing a stalls test. As it was the second occasion within the previous 12 months that TANGLED (IRE) had been reported, a further report within the same period would mean the colt would be prevented from having a stalls test for 6 months.

It has been on the cards for some time, but Saxon Warrior's victory in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster finally provided Aidan O'Brien with a unique slice of racing history.
The Ballydoyle handler notched his 26th Group One win of the year on Town Moor, breaking the record set by legendary American trainer Bobby Frankel back in 2003.
While there is no doubt he is in a privileged position training for the powerful Coolmore team, his skill lies in extracting every drop of potential in virtually all of his inmates.
O'Brien's modesty is a running joke in racing circles - he is always putting the praise on "Davy" or "Johnny" rather than himself - but at Doncaster there was no getting away from it, he would have to take all the plaudits, no matter how hard he tried to share the limelight.
"It's incredible. I'm so delighted for everyone, I'm thrilled," said O'Brien.
"You just don't expect it, all you can do is your best. I feel so proud for everyone.
"It's a privilege to be working with such special people. We're in a very lucky position and we're a small link in a big chain.
"It is so hard to win Group Ones that I never expect it. We've just got a great team, that's at the heart of it.
"We've been in Ballydoyle 20 years now and each year some of the staff are retiring, but not before they are passing on all that experience.
"The lads (Coolmore triumvirate John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor) do a great job breeding and buying the horses and it is our job not to damage them.
"I'm very pleased it's happened today as even though there's other Group Ones, there's a chance we might not win another.
"It's been a funny year really. A lot of horses have progressed and progressed. There were so many horses like that, it was unusual.
"A lot of very well-bred horses just got better and better.
"We don't get much time to enjoy it through the season, we are always looking ahead, but when it's all over we'll sit back and look at what we could have done better."
A big cog in the Ballydoyle wheel is Ryan Moore, who divides his time between Britain and Ireland to team up with O'Brien's bluebloods.
"Aidan will be breaking records for a long time yet," said Moore.
"I'm very lucky, I've worked with the best, but there's no doubt Aidan is extraordinary. He handles everything very well and from my point of view he makes things very easy.
"He's been at the top for 20 years so I can't say anything new about him, it's just a pleasure to ride for him."
Before Moore, the man entrusted with riding the Ballydoyle stars was O'Brien's son, Joseph, now a successful trainer in his own right.
"He's had an unbelievable year and I'm absolutely delighted for him," said the younger O'Brien.
"It's been a record for so long and he's got close to it before. Obviously it's looked like he would get it in the last couple of weeks and to get it done is unbelievable.
"There are a few more chances to come, but the Breeders Cup is very tough and it can also be tough in France with the ground.
"It's great that he's got it done and it's a little bit of pressure off."
O'Brien's wife, Annemarie, thinks the team will not be taking their foot off the gas just yet, telling At The Races: "We're delighted and proud to break the record. It's a great day."
Asked whether there will be a celebration, she said: "We've another Group One in France on Sunday and we head off to the Breeders' Cup early next week, so there's a bit of racing still to do."
One of those trying to stem the O'Brien tide in Ireland is Dermot Weld, himself a ground-breaker, yet he is fulsome in his praise.
"It's a wonderful achievement and he deserves all the credit for the hard work he puts in," said Weld.
"It's not just good for him but it's good for Irish racing."
When plaudits are passed around like confetti, there is a tendency to feel they can be quite hollow. That is not the case with O'Brien as, while he is not one for the limelight, he is never going to be able to escape it due to his incredible skill at training a racehorse.

in today's sporting life.............. ![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/ef20f984-db02-4b7f-98d1-cca14706a11e.jpg) Former Ballydoyle stable jockey Mick Kinane led the tributes after Aidan O'Brien broke Bobby Frankel's record of winners at the top level in a year. Saxon Warrior was O'Brien's 26th Group One success in 2017 with a battling performance in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday. Kinane rode such stars as Galileo, High Chaparral, Rock Of Gibraltar and Hawk Wing in his spell as the number one retained rider and was full of praise for the trainer. "It's a fantastic achievement, it will be nice to have the record on this side of the water," he said. "I think we got close to doing it one year, we had about 21 or 22 and I rode 19 of them and he's come close a few times, so it just shows you how hard it is. "When you look at the horses Aidan has had down the years and he's only done it this year, it puts it into perspective what he has achieved. "I think the key thing is how his horses hold their form through the year and go on improving, US Navy Flag is the perfect case. "You never hear him talk of a virus, it shows how meticulous he is, and he deserves it." Follow President of Ireland ✔@presidentirl "My congratulations to Aidan O’Brien on his record number of top-level wins, and the outstanding performances of all at Ballydoyle." 7:03 AM - Oct 29, 2017 3 3 Replies 69 69 Retweets 335 335 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy Ryan Moore has ridden the majority of the Group One winners for the O'Brien team, including Saxon Warrior. "Obviously there's a lot of dedication and hard work goes in, but I think it's just a very natural feel that he has," he said. "He can see where a horse is going and how he can get it there. "He understands them and gets them to perform at their best every time, but they still keep improving. He's been doing it for a long time and will continue to do so." O'Brien's son Joseph had the plum job before turning to training himself. He said: "It's a huge achievement, to get that amount of Group Ones in Europe in a single year is unbelievable. "I enjoyed every minute, obviously I grew up in the environment and I might have taken for granted the class of horses that were there every day, "He deserves every bit of success. Usually I agreed with how he told me to ride them, I was very lucky. He's very lucky he has the raw materials but he doesn't miss anything so I suppose that is the big thing." Another of O'Brien's sons, Donnacha, is now a member of the Ballydoyle riding team. "He improves horses no one else would be able to. He's very good at what he does," he told At The Races. "He's very easy to work for. He tells you how it is and we get on very well. I've always thought he is probably one of the best trainers of all time and the record brings that home." Seamie Heffernan has been an integral part of O'Brien's jockey team for many years. He said: "He was winning with horses that weren't the best horses so the lads that were breeding the best horses, it was probably always going to end up they went to him. He's very reliable and he keeps getting results all the time. "If you pull your weight and box above it you are OK, but if you have ability and you aren't using it he will let you know. "We haven't really talked about the record, every day is nearly the same, but the one thing that does happen is every day we have a winner someone gets a pat on the back." Johnny Murtagh rode 19 Group One winners for O'Brien in 2008 during his three seasons at Ballydoyle and is now training in his own right after finally hanging up his whip in 2014. "It's an amazing achievement for Aidan and his family and, of course, the team in Ballydoyle," said Murtagh. "They have a wonderful team, but it starts at the top. It was brilliant when I got all those Group Ones for him." Murtagh succeeded Kieren Fallon, who remembers his time as the main rider at Ballydoyle with great fondness. "You have to work hard, he works hard seven days a week and he expects that from everybody else, but he rewards you," he said. "It was a fun place to be, there was a buzz in the yard. You could see the lads, even though they'd won the Derby and all the Classics they would jump around for every winner. There was a buzz which I think you need in the yard. "All the boys get on great, they work close together, he's got good head lads in each barn and I think that is what works. "They've got good respect for Aidan, I've worked around the world, for Bobby Frankel whose record it was, and Bobby was the same, there was an energy in the yard and that is what you need." Before hitting the heights on the Flat, O'Brien enjoyed great success as a National Hunt trainer, being responsible for the mighty Istabraq, who won the Champion Hurdle three times. His regular jockey Charlie Swan remembers those days and how impressed he was by O'Brien. "He's a remarkable man. The attention to detail is amazing, he's so dedicated and such a nice man," he said. "I sorted of expected him to do what he has done. He's such a good trainer. He just knows the horses inside out - he knows every horse. "I remember when I was riding for him he was winning with horses some of which were very moderate and still got them to win a race. He'd improve them. It was mind boggling. "A horse like Life Of A Lord. He was a lowly-rated handicapper and Aidan made him into a near champion. He won two Galway Plates, a Whitbread Gold Cup and the Kerry National. He's just remarkable. "Apart from the races, I only sat on Istabraq once before the start of the season down at Ballydoyle, but in the parade ring before a race, we were always on the same wavelength. He knew what I was thinking and I knew what he was thinking. "He was very good to ride for."

Cloudy Dream loomed up menacingly in the straight and looked a big threat, but Smad Place (12/1) would not be denied. Jumping into the lead three from home, the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup hero was given a reminder by Wayne Hutchinson before taking the last better than Cloudy Dream and galloping on stoutly to score by three-quarters of a length. Oldgrangewood was nine lengths away in third. Hutchinson said: "That was fantastic. There's still life in the old boy yet. The ground is a bit slower than last year and he's a bit lower in the weights. It turned into a staying race up the straight and that obviously suited him. "He's a little bit caught between two stools as he's not good enough to win a Gold Cup or a King George, but he doesn't know how to run a bad race and doesn't owe the yard or me anything." Trainer Malcolm Jefferson said of Cloudy Dream: "He ran a blinder. He's settling down now and settled into the race and jumped well. "He's in the race at Cheltenham next month (BetVictor Gold Cup) and he'll probably go for that, as long as the ground is suitable. "I'm sure he'll get three miles now he's settling more in his races. I'm very happy with him. I'd liked to have won, but he's come to Liverpool and run another good race."

Having won his only start between the flags in Ireland last January, the five-year-old was snapped up for £205,000 by owner Alan Spence and sent to trainer Nicky Henderson. He was the 2/1 favourite for his competitive introduction on Merseyside and after tracking the pacesetting Global Citzen for much of the two-and-a-half-mile journey, he hit the front in the home straight. Another Stowaway, a largely unconsidered 80/1 shot, finished strongly and briefly threatened to cause an upset, but On The Blind Side was always doing enough and held him at bay by three-quarters of a length in the hands of Nico de Boinville. Spence said: "We were hoping he'd run well, but Nicky's horses aren't quite there yet. I'm not saying he needed the run, but he'll definitely come on for the race. "I'm delighted he's won and he should improve. There are a few more races in him, hopefully." He added: "There is no objective. We just wanted to get today out of the way and we'll see where we go from here. Nico was very impressed with him and he's a chaser in the making really." Bon Chic Bon Chic and Charlotte Jones sprung a surprise in the Download The App At 188Bet Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle Bon Chic benefited from an enterprising ride from 10lb claimer Charlotte Jones to spring a surprise in the Download The App At 188Bet Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle. Jimmy Moffatt's mare was a 33/1 shot, but with a visor applied for the first time, the eight-year-old was sent straight to the front and soon opened up a healthy advantage over the rest of the field. It seemed only a matter of time before she would be swallowed up, but after being given a breather, Bon Chic picked up again leaving the back straight and responded to her rider's urgings all the way home to score by three-quarters of a length from Black Ivory. Moffatt said: "She has two ways of running this mare, but she has ability. She was well-in today, running off 117 plus Charlotte's 10lb claim. She's been rated a lot higher than that in the past. "We said we'd send her on and make her mind up for her today. I thought she'd actually gone a bit quick, but what do I know?" Of the winning rider, the trainer added: "Charlotte still has plenty to learn, but she's enthusiastic and has won a class two and a class three for me. "It's good of the owners to put her back on today as she fell off her at Cartmel earlier in the year." The Romford Pele The Romford Pele made a winning debut for Tom George after leaving Rebecca Curtis Plenty of familiar names contested the In Play Betting At 188Bet Veterans' Handicap Chase and it was The Romford Pele who came out on top on his first start for Tom George. The 10-year-old was pulled up on his final appearances for Welsh handler Rebecca Curtis, but there was confidence behind him on his debut for his new trainer, with punters sending him off the 4/1 favourite. Adrian Heskin's mount gradually warmed to his task, but looked booked for minor honours before the strong-travelling and front-running Gas Line Boy came to grief three fences from the finish. That fall left The Romford Pele in front and he gratefully made the most of the opportunity, coming home two and three-quarter lengths clear of Bob Tucker. George said: "Rebecca Curtis has done a very good job with him and he came to me during the summer. He's done it well. He made a bad mistake early on and Adrian just nursed him round from there and got his confidence back. "We're probably a bit lucky, with the other horse falling, but we all have those days." He added: "If he'd disappointed again today we were going to switch him back to hurdles, but that's 'decision made' now - he's a chaser. "I don't really have any plans for him, I just wanted to get through today." Turning out just a fortnight after finishing eighth in the in the Silver Trophy at Chepstow, the Harry Fry-trained six-year-old travelled strongly under Noel Fehily and was good value for the winning margin of two and a quarter lengths over Stamp Your Feet. Fry said: "I know he was eighth at Chepstow, but he was only beaten just over three lengths and it was a messily-run affair. They went hard early, then walked down the back and then sprinted up the straight, which didn't suit him. "Noel rode him a bit more prominently today and said the ground was slow enough for him in places, but he did it well. "This race wasn't really on the agenda, but he came out of Chepstow so well we thought we'd give it a go and it was a nice prize in its own right. "There are no immediate plans. We'll try and find another race in a month to six weeks. He probably won't be running in the depths of winter. We'll try to aim for some nice handicaps in the spring." The 10-year-old was third to Fox Norton in the Grade Two at Prestbury Park last November and trainer Henry de Bromhead reports his stable star to be in A1 condition ahead of a return to the track. Special Tiara came off second best behind Altior when the pair met at Sandown in April. "He is great. There is not a bother on him and he is in mighty form," said De Bromhead. "He will probably go for the Shloer and that is the plan at the moment. That is the most likely place to go then possibly back to Kempton at Christmas. "He is super. He went to the Shloer last year and he seems to like travelling. He is great and I am delighted with him."

Awesome Allan 4.00 Redcar
15/8 Awesome Allan 4:00 Redcar Return to form in recent weeks has coincided with a much reduced mark, and this looks a great opportunity for him to register a first success of 2017.
The way in which he kept on to finish second at Windsor last Monday suggests this longer trip will suit, and I expect him to make all.

William Haggas is a trainer to follow at Redcar with an impressive 13-25 record (52 per cent). Both his runners Tallow (12.00) and Swiss Chocolate (12.30) should be kept a close eye on.
Olly Murphy has made a good start to his training career and has a strike-rate of 26 per cent with recruits from other trainers. Captiva Island (2.05 Ayr), who he got from old boss Gordon Elliott, looks the pick of his two qualifiers.
David Evans and Fran Berry have a 60 per cent strike-rate when teaming up at Leicester and Felisa (12.45) can reward their followers. She scored over course and distance three starts ago and has run well in nurseries on the last two occasions to think she can double her tally.

Frankie Dettori is set for a big few days on the global stage after being confirmed for Ulysses as one of his rides in the Breeders' Cup and being snapped up for Almandin in the Melbourne Cup.
The ever-popular Italian is looking forward to jetting across the world in search of further glory this year following a stellar 2017 with headline triumphs on Enable, Cracksman and Persuasive.
Dettori has landed the mount on last year's winner Almandin, trained by Robert Hickmott, in the Flemington showpiece on Tuesday week due to Damien Oliver being suspended.
"I have been trying for so many years to win the Melbourne Cup, with my first attempt in 1993; that's almost 25 years," he said in his blog for Ladbrokes.
"Obviously I am very grateful that I have the ride on Almandin, although it was in difficult circumstances. I am very sad for Damien Oliver.
"I have been good friends with Lloyd Williams (owner) for over 20 years now and he takes me under his wing every time I come to Australia. My wife's mum is Australian and her father is a New Zealander so this means a lot to the family. It is one of the biggest races worldwide after all.
"There are 24 runners and it is a top race but you know this horse has a great chance and he comes here with a great profile, winning it last year."
Dettori will travel to Australia via the United States where he will be reunited with Ulysses in the Breeders' Cup Turf on Saturday, having finished fourth on the colt 12 months ago.
"Of course I ride Ulysses first this weekend in the Breeders' Cup and I am very excited," he said.
"He was fourth last year, fast ground is the key and the draw can make a huge difference."
He added: "Jet lag won't be a problem. I have done it (for) 20 years and know exactly what to do!"
Dettori replaces Jim Crowley, who steered the Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old to victory in the Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International during the summer.
Crowley has just been happy to have been associated with such a top-notch performer.
He said: "I've had a good time on him and he has been fantastic."
Ulysses runs in the colours of the Niarchos family, although a significant share was recently acquired by Cheveley Park Stud, where he will stand as a stallion.
Chris Richardson, who is Cheveley Park's managing director, said: "It was nothing to do with us. It was all done between the owner (Niarchos family) and Sir Michael Stoute as the horse is still running in their colours.
"It was part of their agreement to run at the Breeders' Cup and they are totally in the driving seat.
"Although we have a major percentage of the horse, they have full control of his race in America. We were not involved."
Dettori will also team up with Cheveley Park through Juliet Capulet in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday and Queen's Trust, who defends her crown in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Saturday.
"Frankie will ride Juliet Capulet for John (Gosden) on the Friday and Queen's Trust (for Stoute) as well," said Richardson.
"Obviously he won on her last year and we are delighted to have him riding both fillies. He is one of the best from here over there. It worked last year so let's hope it works again."
