Richard Fahey provides a horse-by-horse guide to his Saturday team and an update on the Champions Day-bound Ribchester. We make no secret of the fact we love to have winners at York and we've got another chance to boost the 2017 tally on the Knavesmire with a total of 13 representing the yard there on Saturday. We're firing two bullets at the Listed coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes including Dance Diva who returns from a short break. We're happy with her at home, she's had plenty of racing but she seems in great form. She needs to step up on what she's done earlier in the season, though dropping back to six furlongs will suit her in my view. It Dont Come Easy hated the heavy ground at Chester but he ran well. It was a tough enough race in the conditions and hopefully it hasn't left a mark on as it was good to get him back to form. We've gone one better with three in the line-up for the Coral Sprint Trophy. Growl has, hand on heart, been a shade disappointing so we've put a pair of blinkers on him instead of the usual cheekpieces. If the change helps then he's quite well handicapped on his best form. Eastern Impact looks out of form but he's been running on slowish ground which probably hasn't helped him and the better ground will suit. He's not badly handicapped now either. Mr Lupton's a course winner and has been running well without winning lately; I thought he ran well twice at Haydock last month. We're also claiming with him with Sebastian Woods taking off 7lb. He's Wendyll Woods' son so is bred to be a jockey and he's progressing along nicely, so it's nice to give Sebastian the chance to ride a horse like Mr Lupton. We're also triple-handed in the Coral Nursery Handicap and Buckstopper Kit is quite a nice horse. He's very laid back but he's a big type with plenty of scope so could keep on progressing. Shazzab did well to win the other day but will need to improve on that, while Reinbeau Prince is out of the weights and needs to step up quite a bit to be competitive, but we're happy to let him take his chance. Chief Justice is our main hope in the coral.co.uk EBFstallions.com Novice Stakes. He caught us out a little bit in the Acomb when he unfortunately refused to race but I wouldn't say he has a problem with his temperament. He's just a bit thick I'm afraid. Having said that, he's a horse we like a lot and we're hoping if he does everything right then he can run a big race. Sempre Presto looks up against it from what we've seen of her so far, but it's still early days in her development. Queen Kindly (right) is expected to show up well on Saturday Angel Gabrial has been running quite well and must have a chance in the Coral Stayers Handicap. The assessor has finally given him a bit of slack but the problem with this kind of horse is that he was a very good one on his day but by the time he's come back down the weights he's obviously not quite what he used to be. I'd love him to get another big day in the sun but he's not getting any younger. It just didn't happen for Carnageo at Pontefract the other day but he generally goes on any ground and the last time he went to York he won. He's running off a career-high mark so needs to pull out a bit more but he's in really good form ahead of the Coldstream Guards Association Cup Handicap. We've also got Society Red in there right at the bottom of the weights and he's been mixing in pretty strong company all season. He's quite a nice horse and I was delighted he deservedly won a valuable pot at Beverley last time. I expect him to keep progressing throughout his career and is still one to be looking forward to. It's a good card down at Newmarket and we're having a shot at the Darley Dewhurst Stakes with Great Prospector. We clearly like the horse. He's not shown the form of some of Saturday's rivals but I feel seven furlongs on good ground will be just right for him and if he's good enough to get into the first four I'd be over the moon, in all honesty. Clubbable is a real star who tries extremely hard and I'd love her to win the Darley Nursery Handicap. She's been running well in defeat, just finding one too good, and I think she may have just been a tad unlucky not to win at Newmarket last time. Our three in the Darley EBF Stallions Boadicea Stakes are Queen Kindly, Marie Of Lyon and The Wagon Wheel. I got drawn into running The Wagon Wheel over five furlongs at Musselburgh but that was far too sharp for her and six furlongs will be much more her thing. It's a quick turnaround but I think she has a place chance and it'll be Marie Of Lyon's last run of the year so we'll try and get her some black type if we can. Queen Kindly has to concede weight all round but she must have a big chance nevertheless. I thought she ran well in the Abbaye at Chantilly and going back to six furlongs will definitely suit her. The Darley Club Stakes is a competitive Group Three but our lad Forest Ranger has been beaten by really progressive horses (Beat The Bank and Mustashry) recently and he is getting better himself, his handicap mark going up tells you that. He's a good horse and as time goes on I'd expect him to be getting even better. He needs a lifetime best to win this but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he produced one. Everything has gone 100% with him. We took him away recently and were very happy with him. We know he likes the track at Ascot, he's won twice there and was just beaten by Minding in last year's QEII so it would be absolutely fantastic to go one better. We couldn't be happier with the horse, he's improving mentally and physically the whole time and it may sound silly after 14 career starts but he's still progressive. He's just a pleasure to have in the yard. After Ascot there could be the option to go to America, we'll just have to see how he is after next weekend. I've actually nominated him for the race in Japan on November 19 (Grade 1 Mile Championship at Kyoto), but for now it's all about Ascot before we think too far ahead.

Our National Hunt columnist Daryl Jacob returns with Chepstow's unofficial season curtain raiser taking place on Saturday, with Wholestone in action. Chepstow’s two-day meeting this weekend really kicks off the new jumps season for me and it’ll be great to arrive at the track in anticipation of riding a big gun like Wholestone so early in the new campaign. He goes in the totepool Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle over the extended 2m3f and it looks an excellent starting point for him. Last year he was a great horse to ride as he won on four occasions, three times round Cheltenham, and he ran a cracker to be third in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival. We fancied him that day, so it was disappointing at the time, but it emerged he came out of the race with a slight injury so he deserves a lot of credit for battling into third. Nigel Twiston-Davies has got him right again now and I’ve sat on him once at home where he gave me a really good feel. Nigel won this race last year with Ballyoptic so hopes are high he can win it again. I think he’s got a great chance. He goes well fresh, he goes on the ground, he’s got a nice handicap mark of 145 for a Grade One horse. It looks the perfect race for him. As for the future, we’ll see how he does on Saturday and have a good chat in the evening to plan what we do going forward. It should tell us whether to stay over hurdles or go novice chasing. 3 Wholestone211 611-7OR: 145 4/1 Form: 112113-T: N A Twiston-DaviesJ: D A Jacob Last run Live betting powered by I also ride a couple for Emma Lavelle starting with Talent To Amuse in the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Hurdle at 3.35. She’s a lovely filly that’s progressing well. She’s won three in a row and her latest performance at Newton Abbot in May was probably her best yet as she responded nicely for me. This is a much more competitive race, though, with plenty of likely types in opposition, but she won’t mind the ground. It’s her handicap debut, so we’ll find out if a mark of 127 is good or not. She’ll probably need to raise her game again to win this off that rating but she’s on a bit of a roll so we’ll see. 4 Talent To Amuset157 411-2OR: 127D 9/1 Form: 11-1T: Miss E C LavelleJ: D A Jacob Last run Live betting powered by Later on the card Junction Fourteen goes in the toteexacta Handicap Chase (4.45) and he isn’t badly handicapped off 143 on his very best form, but he does have to bounce back from some disappointing runs. He’s lost his way a bit, but if he runs to the level he did when I won on him around Sandown last year he’d have a good chance. At least he’s had a pipe opener, but he needs to bring his A-game to the table. Emma has put a first-time visor on him so hopefully that can help him produce his best form. 6 Junction Fourteent,v114 810-9OR: 143 22/1 Form: 1/062P-PT: Miss E C LavelleJ: D A Jacob Last run Live betting powered by I ride one for the same trainer on Sunday’s Chepstow card, too, Chelsea Flyer in the totepool Live Info Download The App Handicap Hurdle at 4.00. He ran around Worcester like he needed it last time so hopefully he’ll come on for that, but it is another competitive race and he does drop down to two miles having raced around 2m4f on his last three starts. Last time he ran over this trip he won well so hopefully he can repeat the trick for me on Sunday. 10 Chelsea Flyer16 611-2OR: 130BF 14/1 Form: 25170-5T: Miss E C LavelleJ: D A Jacob Last run Finally, I’ve enjoyed my start to life as Ben Pauling’s stable jockey and I’m riding out there a couple of times a week now getting used to his horses and everyone at the yard. Raven’s Tower ran a cracker for me over hurdles at Towcester on Wednesday and he might return to Ascot, where he’s won before, for his next assignment later in the month. Closer to hand it looks like I’ll be off up to Wetherby on Wednesday to ride Cyrius Moriviere in the Visit The All New racinguk.com Novices’ Chase over the extended 2m3f. Everyone could see how unlucky he was last season when he would’ve won but for his saddle slipping at Doncaster, but the good thing is he retains his novice status this campaign. With all that experience from last season under his belt novice chases should suit him this time around and Wetherby looks ideal for him as well. He’s definitely one to look forward to this coming week.

in today's sporting life............... U S Navy Flag led his rivals a merry dance in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes as Aidan O'Brien saddled the first four home in the Group One at Newmarket. The Ballydoyle colt was a 5/1 shot to secure a second Group One on the bounce following his Middle Park Stakes triumph a fortnight ago. Ryan Moore controlled the pace from the front before kicking for home and U S Navy Flag readily brushed aside his opponents to claim an impressive two-and-a-half-length victory. Stablemates Mendelssohn, Seahenge and Threeandfourpence finished second, third and fourth respectively. . U S Navy Flag provided O'Brien with a 24th top-flight success of 2016, leaving him just one short of the record set by American trainer Bobby Frankel in 2003. Moore told ITV Racing: "He's been a remarkable horse. From the middle of the summer we've started to work him out. He's very tough. I thought it was going to be a very good Dewhurst. "To win a Middle Park and then to come and win a Dewhurst is great and he was strong at the line. It's a massive feat again, what Aidan has done." U S Navy Flag is a full-sister to Roly Poly, who secured her third successive top-level win in last weekend's Sun Chariot Stakes. "They're amazingly similar," Moore added. "Neither of them are the biggest, but they'll both give you absolutely everything. This lad would have a little more substance about him. They both seem to keep getting better every time they come to the track." U S Navy Flag always appeared to have matters in hand in the Dewhurst and travelled strongly against the rail under Moore. The previously unbeaten 4/7 favourite Expert Eye was always in his slipstream, but was notably keen in the hands of Andrea Atzeni. While US Navy Flag powered clear, pursued by three stablemates, Expert Eye dropped back through the field and finished last of nine runners. O'Brien said of the winner: "He is a very good Middle Park winner and I think he was overlooked a bit. It unusual and rare (for a horse to win the Middle Park and the Dewhurst). "I suppose we're lucky to have a colt who has pace enough for six (furlongs) and it looks as though he's a good chance of getting a mile." Regarding future plans, the trainer added: "He would have America (Breeders' Cup), but I don't know. We will see how he is. He is certainly very happy with what he is doing. It's exciting." Asked about the record, O'Brien said: "It would be massive everyone, but we don't think about it as a long-term thing. We take every horse and each race at a time but it would be a massive achievement for everybody. "There are hundreds of people in the team and it's a big team effort. We'd be very honoured to do it, but we'll take one day at a time." Expert Eye's trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: "It was just very disappointing. He was a little keen early on, but even so it was disappointing. That was not him." Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, was also at a loss to explain Expert Eye's performance. He said: "We are all a bit mystified. He was a bit keen. He settled but he was the first horse beaten. Obviously he will be checked out. I don't think there is no obvious explanation for this. "He was very straightforward, had a good prep and good work. We were as excited as anyone but for some reason it was not going to be. There is usually some sort of reason but there is nothing immediately obvious." Expert Eye was later found to have been lame in his right hind following a post-race examination.

Withhold landed a big gamble when he powered clear of his rivals in the Betfred Cesarewitch at Newmarket. The four-year-old had run just once previously this season, finishing third at Newbury three weeks ago on what was his first start since joining Roger Charlton from the yard of Charlie Hills. With champion jockey-elect Silvestre de Sousa in the saddle, the 5/1 favourite was never too far off the pace and was sent into the lead before the home turn. After having taken a few strides out of the field, De Sousa angled towards the stands' rail and Withhold saw out the marathon distance well to score by three and three-quarters of a length. London Prize was second and Lagostovegas third, rewarding followers of Matt Brocklebank's Antepost Angle column having been advised each-way at 25/1. Charlton told ITV Racing: "It doesn't normally work, but this one has. I think Silvestre gave him a very enterprising ride, to have him up there from a wide draw. He's a very nice horse and winning these races are very memorable. "It was a demolition job, really." De Sousa said: "Mr Charlton left everything to me. He quickened all the way to the line. He has done it very well. He's a lovely horse and he should improve." Charlton feels his charge is capable of making his mark in Pattern class in due course. He added: "I was very lucky. Some good judges decided that this was the horse to be bought from the Horses In Training sales. He had a lovely break during the winter I insisted on the horse being gelded. He was a big, burly horse then. "He'd proved he stays two miles. I thought if we didn't run him he wouldn't go up in the handicap, so we waited until three weeks ago. "We ran him over a mile and a half and I thought he ran very well and the form worked out quite well. It was a case of presenting him on the day fit and ready to go. "I think he is a good stayer and why wouldn't he end up being a player in Group race? The way he has won that looks like he ought to win more races. He has absolutely demolished them."

Ben Linfoot's turns to Mark Johnston at Goodwood for Sunday's nap, ridden by the in-form PJ McDonald. Recommended bet: Ben Linfoot's Daily Nap, October 15 TRAVELCARD steps up to seven furlongs for the first time in handicap company at Goodwood on Sunday and that could be the key to her getting back in the winners’ enclosure. Mark Johnston had a few big-priced winners on Saturday, but Travelcard is likely to be well-fancied for the Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group Irish EBF Nursery. She’s proven on soft ground, she’s dropped a few pounds after finishing third at Salisbury last time and she’s landed a plum stall in one with the in-form PJ McDonald on board. He’s unlikely to mess about from the front end in this and Travelcard looks best in at the weights on the pick of her novice form. Anita Chambers has race-by-race tips for Sunday's racing and expects Paul Nicholls to enjoy a good day at Chepstow. Paul Nicholls has won five of the last 10 renewals of Chepstow's totepool Persian War Novices' Hurdle and it would be no surprise if Amour De Nuit further enhanced those statistics in this year's renewal. The Grade Two affair has drawn some decent winners in the past and Amour De Nuit looks a useful type, having won three of his eight runs over hurdles to date. The five-year-old took a bit of time to get the hang of the game, but after finally getting his head in front at Taunton back in March, he has continued to improve. He has lined up at Newton Abbot for his last three starts, winning twice and finishing second on the other occasion, with his most recent success under a double penalty a particularly pleasing result. Amour De Nuit steps up to two miles and three furlongs here but showed plenty of stamina on the Flat which is a plus and he can prove a bit too sharp for some promising rivals. Amour De Nuit: Can strike at Chepstow Amour De Nuit: Can strike at Chepstow Nicholls should also be on the mark with Romain De Senam in the John Ayres Memorial Handicap Chase. He ran a fine race in defeat when fifth in the Red Rum at Aintree in the spring, while there was little disgrace in being beaten five lengths by the well-tried Vaniteux at Ayr in April. Mia's Storm can take full advantage of her mares' allowance in the totepool Supports Responsible Gambling Week Novices' Chase. A four-time hurdles winner for Alan King, Mia's Storm also won a point to point back in 2015 which suggests a move up to fences will be a bonus. She was last seen when running out an imposing eight-length winner of a competitive staying event at Haydock in May, defying a 5lb rise in the weight to win in style. This near three-mile trip will present few issues and the 7lb she gets from all her rivals makes her far and away the best at the weights. There are plenty of familiar names in the field for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust Veterans' Handicap Chase, but it is Fox Appeal who can enjoy a turn in the spotlight this time. The 10-year-old still looks keen enough judged on his recent free-going fourth at Fontwell, but should fare better in this age-restricted company. Cliffs Of Capri is entered in the sales later this month so victory in Goodwood's "Bet £10 Get £20 At 188Bet" Handicap would certainly add a few pounds to his price tag. Not seen since winning at Wolverhampton last November, he can make a victorious return to action for Simon Crisford. Racing is in mourning on Sunday following the death of a man in his 50s who died in a stable yard incident at Kempton on Saturday evening. A police investigation is under way into the incident that prompted officials at the Sunbury track to abandon the remainder of the meeting before the second-last race. "Surrey Police were called to Kempton Park racecourse in Sunbury-on-Thames following a report of a sudden death around 9.20pm on Saturday October 14," a force spokeswoman said. "A man in his 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. "The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries remain ongoing." Racegoers were not aware of the medical emergency before the announcement to abandon racing was made over the public address system before the 8.45 race. The stewards' report from Kempton read: "The stewards held an enquiry following a report from the clerk of the course that a serious incident had occurred in the stable yard prior to race seven. "They interviewed the clerk of the course who was representing the racecourse executive. "The clerk of the course stated that the racecourse executive had taken the decision to abandon the remainder of the evening’s racing due to the doctors needing to attend a medical emergency, rendering the course no longer medically compliant to continue racing. This decision was sanctioned by the stewards." Anyone affected by the incident can seek support through Racing Welfare. There is a 24-hour helpline on 0800 6300 443 and online live chat is also available at www.support.racingwelfare.co.uk. Newmarket: David Milnes
Loxley (3.45 Goodwood, nap)
Charlie Appleby's newcomer has been showing up nicely in his work on the Limekilns and is fancied to collect first time. The son of New Approach has mixed it with winning stablemates and should handle the cambers.
9/4 Loxley 3:45 Goodwood Others to follow Goodwood 2.00 Taper Tantrum, 2.35 Lady Lancelot, 4.20 Michael's Mount, 5.25 Cliffs Of Capri. Lambourn: James Burn
Elgin (4.00 Chepstow, nap)
Supreme seventh has some smart novice form from last winter and concedes weight all round, but appears on a workable mark and trainer Alan King has his team in good nick.
3/1 Elgin 4:00 Chepstow Others to follow Chepstow 1.40 Kozier, 2.15 Mia's Storm, 3.25 Fox Appeal, 5.10 Deyrann De Carjac, 5.40 Mahlermade. Goodwood 2.00 Jack Bear, 5.25 Noble Peace. North: Colin Russell
Teofonic (4.20 Goodwood, nap)
Improved for the step up to this trip when second at Newmarket last weekend. Didn't get the best of runs that day and is fancied to go one better.
7/2 Teofonic 4:20 Goodwood Others to follow Chepstow 2.50 Dear Sire. Goodwood 2.35 Dutch Academy, 3.10 Travelcard, 3.45 Perfect Blue. West Country: Andrew King
Mont Des Avaloirs (5.40 Chepstow, nap)
Far from disgraced when runner-up on debut at this course and expected to have derived plenty of benefit for the experience.
5/2 Mont Des Avaloirs 5:40 Chepstow Others to follow Chepstow 1.40 Malaya, 2.15 Mr Mix, 2.50 Black Mischief, 3.25 Lamb Or Cod, 4.00 I'm A Game Changer, 4.35 Romain De Senam, 5.10 Bubble O'Clock. Racing Post Ratings: Paul Curtis
Stellarta (4.55 Goodwood)
Has a good record over course and distance and can take advantage of a favourable mark.
8/1 Stellarta 4:55 Goodwood Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Miss Zizi (2.25 Naas)
Didn't go down easily when runner-up at Fairyhouse last month and John Oxx's youngster can deservedly open her account.
7/2 Miss Zizi 2:25 Naas Longshot: Neil McCabe
Poet's Princess (4.55 Goodwood)
Has been falling down the weights but ran well last time out, will like the ground and could spring a surprise here.
8/1 Poet's Princess 4:55 Goodwood Ireland: Tony O'Hehir
Espoir D'Soleil (4.45 Naas)
A Leopardstown maiden winner over 1m1f before finishing second over a mile on her handicap debut at this track last month, this daughter of Galileo should be suited by today's step up to 1m2f and she gets the vote to score for Pat Smullen and Dermot Weld.
11/4 Espoir D'Soleil 4:45 Naas

BANKER
Dramatically (1.50 Naas)
Daliyah brings the best form into the race but is beginning to look exposed and frustrating, while Betsey Trotter takes a big step down in class after finishing eighth in a Group 3 last time out. However, the race revolves around the three Aidan O'Brien-trained runners and Dramatically looks the one to be on given the likely improvement. Sent off a fancied 4-1 shot on debut, he was always out the back after a slow start but got the hang of racing late on. Donnacha will ride him more prominently here and the son of War Front should score.
7/2 Dramatically 1:50 Naas EYECATCHER
Gumball (1.40 Chepstow)
This is one of the best early-season juvenile hurdles you'll see and four of these have realistic chances of running at some the big festivals later in the year. Malaya is likely to take a big chunk out of the market and therefore it could be wise to play Gumball, a recent Stratford scorer. Winning by 31 lengths on that occasion, the French import jumped with precision and accuracy and quickened up impressively when Richard Johnson let the handbrake off. Expect him to make all.
5/6 Gumball 1:40 Chepstow EACH-WAY PLAY
Stellarta (4.55 Goodwood)
In what is a very tight handicap, Stellarta, a course-and-distance specialist, can run into the money at good each-way odds. He has form figures of 33445 at the course and showed that he was returning to somewhere near his best with a staying-on effort at Kempton last time out. David Probert, who has been on board for five of his seven career wins, takes over from Tom Marquand and his draw in four is a positive.

Baron Bolt is three from three with PJ McDonald on board, compared to one from 15 with other jockeys. They team up once more in the 4.55 at Goodwood.
William Haggas has a record of 21 wins from 89 runners, a 24 per cent strike-rate, at Goodwood. His only runner on the card is Istanbul Sultan in the 3.45.
Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville have individual strike-rates of 21 and 20 per cent respectively at Chepstow. That rises to 43 per cent when they combine. They do so with Discours D’Un Roi in the 4.00.

It is six days until the official end of the Flat season with British Champions Day at Ascot next Saturday, but first the curtain comes down today at Goodwood’s final meeting of the year.
Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley oversees his final meeting, after 23 years of tending what is acknowledged to be a course which consistently produces good ground even in the driest of summers.
Jump jockeys, who seem to love a challenge, start the day with their annual whizz round Goodwood's gradients and standing dish Harry Hunt is back to try and win the race for a second time in four years after a short-head defeat last year.
Day two of Chepstow's jumps meeting does not have the stars of Saturday but it gives the veteran chasers a chance to hog the limelight.
Over in Ireland Naas hosts the latest round in the duel between Colin Keane and Pat Smullen for the Irish Flat jockeys' title.

Group 1-winning trainer Pat Haslam died on Saturday afternoon at the age of 69 following a battle with illness.
Haslam, who trained over 1,000 winners and enjoyed success at every track in England, Scotland and Wales during his career, retired from the training ranks in 2010, handing over the reins to his son Ben after 37 years as a licence holder.
Haslam celebrated Group 1 success with Kinnaird, who landed the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp under Kevin Darley in 2005.
He also saddled several other Group-race victories, including a Criterion Stakes win with Pipe Major in 1995 and further high-profile glory in France with Maroussies Wings, who landed the Prix Minerve at Deauville in 2006.
Haslam enjoyed a fine two seasons in the early 1980s with Godstone, ridden by Graham Sexton, successful in the Richmond Stakes in 1983, Mummy's Pleasure winning back-to-back runnings of the Bunbury Cup and Hawkley landing the Royal Hunt Cup under Tyrone Williams in 1984.
Nigel's Lad also proved a stable star for Haslam, winning 23 races in a mixture of Flat, hurdles and chase contests between 1994 and 2002.
Ben Haslam said: “Dad was a great role model to me. He was a proper old-fashioned trainer, he was tough and demanded hard work, which was a side of working for him, but as a father he was very caring and very loving. No one could have asked for a better father.
“People within the industry that knew him over the 40 years that he’d been involved in racing would say he was one of the most respected trainers and people in racing.
"He was widely respected by other trainers, jockeys and his staff, who he never made life easy for, but every one of them tell me how much they loved working for him.
“He was a fantastic trainer and training a winner at every track in the country at the time was a testament to how good he was. Amazingly the last track he needed to do it on was Cheltenham and he did it there with a treble.”
Haslam, one of the few trainers to be based in Lambourn, Newmarket and Middleham during his career, bought subsequent Group 1 winner Kinnaird for 7,000gns at the breeze-up sales at Doncaster and took great pleasure from her high-profile success, but also enjoyed many winners when teaming up with two legendary riders.
Ben Haslam said: “The jockeys and sportsmen he admired the most were AP McCoy and Lester Piggott, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than when they rode him a winner."
Haslam is survived by his wife Anne and son Ben.
Three of Haslam’s best horses
Kinnaird Haslam enjoyed his two finest wins with this talented mare, most notably victory in the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera under Kevin Darley in 2005. A winner of six races from sixteen starts, Kinnaird was a remarkably consistent daughter of Dr Devious, also landing the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster in 2003. Contesting Group races at the Curragh, Deauville and Ascot following that memorable day for the Haslams on Town Moor, fortune finally favoured Kinnaird at the top level at Longchamp, where she stayed on gamely to deny Mona Lisa by half a length. Haslam’s wife Anne said following the race: “This is so fantastic. This filly has wanted soft ground, but for two years she has been very unlucky.”
Pipe Major A fourth-placed finished in the Coventry Stakes followed by taking the runner-up spot in the Champagne Stakes confirmed Pipe Major to be a promising juvenile for Haslam and the son of Tirol certainly trained on at three. The Lord Scarsdale-owned gelding outran odds of 50-1 when fourth in the 2,000 Guineas in 1995 before winning the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket later that year.
Maroussies Wings Haslam enjoyed high-profile success with this daughter of In The Wings, who was similarly consistent to Kinnaird, albeit at a slightly lower level, during her 11-race career. Maroussies Wings placed in the Musidora and Ribblesdale prior to winning the Group 3 Prix Minerve at Deauville under Olivier Peslier in 2006. Although she did not score in three subsequent starts, Maroussies Wings maintained her consistent profile, finishing fourth in the Park Hill, Middleton Stakes and Pinnacle Stakes.
Racing world reacts
Karl Burke (on Racing UK) It’s very sad news and we can only be thinking of Anne and Ben and their immediate family. I got on really well with Pat – he’d let you know if he wasn’t getting on with you. He was great company and if you got him talking on any topic that he had strong thoughts on, it could be very amusing. He was a great guy and always someone you could turn to. He'll be a huge loss.
Derek Thompson (@tommoracing) Pat Haslam was a top trainer, a great guy and had one of the best racing brains of all time. Thoughts and prayers with Anne, Ben and family.
Niall Hannity (@niallhannity) I remember speaking to AP McCoy not long after he retired and he said Pat Haslam was one of the very best he ever rode for. A great man. RIP
The National Trainers Federation We're very sad to hear about the passing of Patrick Haslam following a long illness. Patrick was a clever and versatile trainer, renowned for the rare feat of having trained a winner at every British racecourse. He had great energy and a passion for the sport of racing, not just training horses. He was always interested in what was going on in the industry and was much admired and respected by his colleagues. Our condolences go to Anne and Ben.

Andrew Thornton returns to the racecourse after injury on Tuesday nearly ten months after reaching 1,000 winners - and he is set to ride the same horse he achieved the landmark figure on.
Thornton, 44, has been sidelined since hitting the milestone on Boxing Day, due to a knee injury he sustained following his victory on Kentford Myth at Wincanton.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning rider received the all-clear to return to action this month after a third operation on his knee, and will partner Kentford Myth in a 2m4f mares' handicap hurdle at Worcester for trainer Seamus Mullins.
"I'd love to say we've been thinking about this and planning it for a long time but it's just happened like that," said Thornton on Sunday. "It's great to be riding for Seamus, who has been very good to me, and owner Ian Bare, who's a very supportive owner."
Despite a prolonged recovery, which involved surgery to reconstruct the rider's anterior cruciate ligament and more than 150 trips to Jack Berry House, Thornton always had his sights set on returning to the saddle.
He said: "Some people were wondering after I'd got to 1,000 winners whether that would be it for me. But as I said to my good lady wife Yvonne, how could I get to 1,000 winners, which would be the best day of my professional life, and then retire, which would be the worst, all in one?
"I think when you're trying to get back to full fitness you need to have a goal, and I've always wanted to come back to riding."
He added: "I've put a lot of hard work and graft in. I've had a few setbacks along the way, but that's part of a jump jockey's life. I'm ready to go and looking forward to it."

Jump Pattern Book Blog 2017/18 11 Oct 17
Having recently published the latest edition of the Jump Pattern Book, the Chair of the BHA’s Jump Pattern Committee Adrian Grazebrook looks back on the 2016/17 campaign and ahead to what is in store for 2017/18.
The Cheltenham Festival meeting is commonly regarded as the pinnacle of the Anglo-Irish Jump racing year but, in 2017, none of the season’s top rated steeple chasers in the annual classification in any of the three categories won there. Douvan (174) was the highest rated of all, followed three pounds behind by the ill-fated Many Clouds (171). The novices Thistlecrack and Altior (170) came next, with Fox Norton (169) as the best over the intermediate distance.
Compare this with the two previous years when there were seven horses rated 170 or more, and it will be seen that, in 2016/17, the best of the experienced chasers were among the lower reaches, though the total number rated at 160 or above (35) was well up to scratch.
The story at the top over hurdles was similar, with Buveur d’Air (169) posting the lowest top rated figure for over a decade, but the total of 14 hurdlers rated at 160 or more was again in line with historical averages, as were the numbers of promising novices, though none stood out.
Concerns have been expressed in some quarters about an inflation of the Jump Pattern in recent years to uncompetitive racing, with the best horses able to gain easy pickings in small fields and without having to meet one another. It is true that Pattern and Listed races have been added to the programme, and indeed this process has continued for 2017/18, but not without careful consideration from the Jump Pattern Committee (JPC) and the BHA executive.
These additions are introduced for a specific reason: either to fill a recognised gap in the programme, where good horses require a Class 1 race; or to promote some specific race planning objective, such as to encourage the greater participation of mares.
The programme for mares is one which has been expanding for some years now. First with bumpers, then hurdles and then moving on to steeple chases. This year’s changes are a tidying up exercise to fill in a few gaps identified in the mares’ programme.
The Pattern is under constant review and its primary purpose remains to give targets and opportunities, with black type where justified. It is inevitable that some races may in some years have smaller than average fields, particularly in the novice ranks.
However, even if there are sometimes only a few top quality horses in some categories on occasion, there remains the need to give those horses the best opportunity to shine and progress, and indeed an incentive to bring them to the course and run, and be tested. If a race regularly fails to meet the parameters, appropriate action can always be taken.
We recently moved away from the process whereby any racecourse could propose a race with a good ratings record for consideration for upgrading, effectively asking the JPC to say “why not”. Now it is the Committee, via the executive, which asks “why” and “what”, and then invites racecourses to bid for the opportunity. Happily they do so!
In a further effort to reinforce quality, we are always reviewing the qualifying parameters for Pattern and Listed races, to align them with the top rank of the horse population. A decade ago, the qualifying average rating for a Grade 1 was increased by 5lbs to 155; subsequently all novice parameters were increase by 5lbs.
Now the open races below Grade 1 have been put up by 5lbs in their turn, to catch up with the races at the very top. Full details of these calculations and their significance appear among the ground rules for the Pattern at the end of the Jump Pattern Book.
In essence, each grade now requires the performance of the best four horses to average 5lbs higher than the next grade below, and novice races at each grade are fixed at 15lbs below the non-novice equivalent. The 2016/17 renewals of Pattern and Listed races have been judged against the new increased parameters. The protocol demands that, before downgrading, a warning letter should be sent to the racecourse concerned, and a number of these have been dispatched.
It seems almost inevitable that downgrades will occur next season. However it should always be remembered that the JPC does retain a degree of discretion, though that is used sparingly.
So what are the changes for 2017/18?
Firstly, three new Listed mares’ races:
• A 3m Novices’ Chase at Newbury in December • A 3m Open Chase at Perth in April • A National Hunt Flat race at Market Rasen in January
Then there are three upgrades from Listed:
• Aintree’s 3m1f Betfred Chase in December to Grade 2 (to be named after Many Clouds) • The 3m Pertemps Final at The Cheltenham Festival to Grade 3 • The 3m 1f Betway Handicap Chase at Aintree in April, both to Grade 3
Beyond that, just one new race has been introduced, into the Listed category: the existing and successful 2m 3½f Novices’ Chase at Chepstow in October: a witness perhaps to an increasing appetite for getting horses started earlier in the autumn.
Finally, the 3m Worcester Novices’ Chase at Newbury has been renamed the John Francome. This race was transferred from Worcester racecourse 17 years ago, so the geographical connection with the Pitchcroft is no longer relevant.

in today's sporting life................. A round-up of the action from Naas on Sunday as Dermot Weld's Yulong Gold Fairy completed back-to-back victories. Dermot Weld has high hopes for Yulong Gold Fairy next season following her victory in the valuable Foran Equine Irish EBF Auction Race Final at Naas. The daughter of Mount Nelson got off the mark at the third time of asking when winning at Galway in August and backed that up with a six-length success under Pat Smullen, staying on strongly through the final furlong to take the 70,800 euro first prize. Weld said: "She was impressive. She did it well when she won in Galway for us and this has always been the plan. We'll put her away for the year now and look forward to her being a stakes filly for next year. "She'll appear in one of the 1,000 Guineas trials next spring. She was coming home very nicely there so it's logical to try her in one of the Classic trials next spring. She's good. She's pretty adaptable ground wise and is a good moving filly." Colin Keane narrowly denied jockeys' title rival Smullen as Elegant Pose won a thrilling renewal of the Clodovil Irish EBF Garnet Stakes. Smullen looked set to add to his tally when striking the front on board Making Light approaching the furlong marker and kicking clear on Weld's inmate. However, the Ger Lyons-trained 9/4 favourite began to really motor late on and got up right on the line to take the Listed contest by a short head. Lyons said: "I didn't see that happening in the last furlong. She's some little titch. She's green as grass and never travelled like we thought she would. We thought coming back to the mile would be no problem to her. "She can only improve for a winter on her back because we've been training her with next year in mind. The sky is the limit and we have a lovely filly on our hands. She's a huge addition to the yard and I'm looking forward to her next year." Red Stars (9/1) ground out a determined victory for John Oxx in the Anjaal Irish EBF Bluebell Stakes. The Listed finale over 12 furlongs proved a real slog and for a long away it looked as though the front-running Tilly's Chilli may hang on under Colm O'Donoghue. However, Declan McDonough's mount wore down the 20/1 outsider in the closing stages and recorded her first victory of the season by half a length. Oxx said: "She stays well, she's very honest and she goes on that sort of ground. It was similar when she won at Roscommon last year. She had a bit of a break during the summer. She came back and was third at Galway, third at Limerick and better again today. "The plan was to run her here and then the November Handicap before she retires, but whether she runs in the November Handicap now I'm not so sure. She's done well and we can't complain. We might retire her on that note, but I'll see what the owner says. She's a genuine filly and that's what you need today."

Bullards Alley defied odds of 50/1 to win the Group One Canadian International at Woodbine by 10 3/4 lengths as Aidan O'Brien was forced to wait a little longer in his bid to equal Bobby Frankel's world record. US Navy Flag's victory in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday - in which O'Brien incredibly saddled the first four home - moved the trainer onto 24 Group One successes in 2017 and he could have even eclipsed the late Frankel's mark of 25, which was set in 2003, on Sunday night had Rain Goddess and Idaho managed to win their respective races in Canada under Ryan Moore. But while Rain Goddess trailed in last in the E. P. Taylor Stakes, which was won by Andrew Balding's Blonde Me, Idaho could only finish fourth despite being sent off as 15/8 favourite. Instead, the unheralded Bullards Alley, trained by Tim Glyshaw, came off the home turn full of running and rocketed clear when asked the question by jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva. To his credit, Idaho stayed on down the straight to make late ground in fourth, just ahead of last year's winner Erupt, but in the final reckoning there was only one horse that mattered. O'Brien, who reached 23 Group One victories in 2001 and 2008, has a host of chances to break the record at Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot next week, with the likes of Caravaggio (), Rhododendron (), Seventh Heaven (), Churchill (), Winter () bidding for glory. Blond Me recorded a famous success for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy in the Grade One E. P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in Canada. The five-year-old filly, who won the Middleton Stakes at York in May, was given a confident ride by Murphy - winning the second top-level event of his career after Aclaim in the Prix de la Foret last month - and swept into the straight full of running. It did not take her long to get the better of a brief duel with Kitten's Roar as she stayed on strongly, despite hanging marginally to her right. The Aidan O'Brien-trained Rain Goddess was never able to get in any sort of blow, trailing in last under Ryan Moore. Ben Linfoot expects the Jim Crowley-ridden Alfaraq to get off the mark at the second time of asking at Yarmouth on Monday. Recommended bet: Ben Linfoot's Daily Nap, October 16 The Newbury maiden won by Fennaan last month has surprisingly yet to produce a winner but Sam Gold, Cuban Heel, Gronkowski and Face Like Thunder have all come out and run good races in defeat to prove it was probably an above average of it's type. The third home, Alfarqad, was smartly away from the stalls, tanked through the early stages of the race and was one of the last horses to come off the bridle under Jim Crowley. He looks certain to derive considerable benefit from that initial outing after only being overhauled by a couple of rivals inside the final furlong and a half as he certainly wasn't knocked about when his chance had gone. Burrows' two-year-olds tend to be much sharper second time out and it will take a very good horse to deny this $1.3million purchase victory at the second time of asking. Herdwick looks a potential threat after a pleasing debut run here last month but it's not been the best couple of weeks for Sir Michael Stoute's string, while the William Haggas-trained pair, Humbolt Current and Willie John, have to be respected despite not having the experience of the selection.

Newmarket: David Milnes
Foreseeable Future (1.40 Yarmouth, nap)
James Tate's colt was up against it when tackling the useful Beshaayir on his debut at Newbury last month and faces nothing of that calibre here. The son of Harbour Watch has since impressed on Racecourse Side.
7/4 Foreseeable Future 1:40 Yarmouth Others to follow Musselburgh 2.50 Big Tour, 3.20 Ornate. Windsor 2.00 Global Exceed, 2.40 Garrick, 3.00 Haverland, 3.30 Kitty Boo, 4.00 Zeelander, 4.30 Buxted Dream, 5.00 Dash Of Spice, 5.30 Crimson Rosette. Fakhoor (1.40 Yarmouth, nap)
Trainer Owen Burrows has a good strike-rate at the track and this Oasis Dream juvenile looks the one to beat if making usual improvement from a fine debut second at Kempton last month.
8/11 Fakhoor 1:40 Yarmouth Others to follow Musselburgh 2.50 Fawaareq. Windsor 2.30 Grapevine, 3.00 Global Tango, 3.30 Finale, 4.30 Field Of Vision. Yarmouth 2.10 Alfarqad, 2.40 Mutafarrid. North: Colin Russell
Fine Example (4.20 Musselburgh, nap)
Not been at his best on last couple of starts, but goes particularly well at this course and, from a good draw and with the drying ground in his favour, he is fancied to bounce back.
9/2 Fine Example 4:20 Musselburgh Others to follow Musselburgh 1.50 Royal Pursuit, 2.20 Rosemay, 2.50 Get Knotted, 3.20 Alpha Delphini, 3.50 B Fifty Two, 4.55 Donnelly's Rainbow, 5.25 Jonny Delta. West Country: Tim Mitchell
Hawridge Glory (4.00 Windsor, nap)
Solid performer with two wins up to 1m2f this season. Connections are expecting more as he has been shaping as though this step up in distance would bring about further improvement.
15/2 Hawridge Glory 4:00 Windsor Others to follow Windsor 4.30 Pastfact. Yarmouth 5.40 Monaadhil. Racing Post Ratings: Simon Turner
Tawseef (5.25 Musselburgh)
Has thrived since joining new yard, winning under both codes. Recent jumps form suggests he can find another race on the Flat, and this looks a very feasible opportunity.
4/1 Tawseef 5:25 Musselburgh Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Dubka (3.10 Yarmouth)
Has drawn a blank so far this term but has produced some decent efforts in defeat and it may pay to keep faith in Sir Michael Stoute's filly.
9/2 Dubka 3:10 Yarmouth Longshot: Neil McCabe
Heaven's Guest (2.50 Musselburgh)
Has run excellent races in defeat on last two starts and can go close again here under ideal conditions.

George Scott is two from two when when sending his runners on a journey of 349 miles or more. He sends Ace Of Spades to Musselburgh for the 1.50.
Dean Ivory has a strike-rate of ten per cent with his runners. However, when he applies first-time cheekpieces his record is four from 14, a 29 per cent strike-rate. Dor’s Law wears the headgear in the 5.10 at Yarmouth.
Owen Burrows and Jim Crowley have individual strike-rates of 26 and 28 per cent respectively at Yarmouth. That rises to 75 per cent when they combine. They do so with Fakhoor (1.40), Alfarqad (2.10) and Mutafarrid (2.40).
