Dual Group One-winning sprinter Reckless Abandon will make his return from an unsuccessful spell at stud in the Stobart Members Club Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Reckless Abandon: Returns to action at Newmarket on Saturday The four-year-old landed the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes during a tremendous juvenile campaign for Clive Cox and although he failed to make the same kind of impact the following season, he performed creditably at the highest level. He was retired to Darley Stud at the end of last year, but after suffering fertility problems, it was announced earlier this year he would return to the racecourse and run for Godolphin under the tutelage of trainer Charlie Appleby. Reckless Abandon is set to face 12 rivals in this weekend's six-furlong Listed contest on his first appearance in 321 days. It promises to be a thorough examination, with Robert Cowell's 32Red (Stewards') Cup winner Intrinsic and Brian Meehan's exciting sprinter Intibaah among the opposition. Eton Rifles, Alben Star, Caspar Netscher and Tropics also feature.

16:55 Friday 22nd August Racing Tips - 22/08/2014
Nunthorpe day and it's quite a simple choice at the prices between Extortionist and Pearl Secret and I can't split them. They want different types of ground and the overnight rain is not ideal for the former but lovely for the latter. However, Olly Stevens' colt is improving and it will not bee too soft and he's worth a bet at 16/1. If the ground does ease then it is definitely worth going for Pearl Secret who didn't get his ground at Ascot but has become the forgotten horse of the sprint division. He is drawn next to his front running Qatar Racing companion Hot Streak and not too far from Take Cover. This could set up nicely for the dual course and distance winner who was luckless in the race 2 years ago and 20/1 looks too big. York 15.40 - Pearl Secret 1pt e/w York 15.40 - Extortionist 1pt e/w
Cracking opening handicap and I'm sweet on Stomachion who has to go close and is a must bet at 13/2. He didn't seem to handle Goodwood last time but is weighted to win and will appreciate this track that little bit more. I fancy he should be a strong favourite. Also on the shortlist is Chancery but he is short enough and preference near the top of the market is for the aforementioned. Communicator is interesting over this trip and he has won here but the other must bet is Lahaag at 18/1. He's been on the list for a while but hasn't been a bet as yet, though I was tempted at Ascot. He was unlucky that day when never getting a run and his record here is excellent, even taking into account his worst effort at the track when held up and coming wide over 10 furlongs before staying on. He is now 8lb lower and weight to win. York 13.55 - Stomachion 1pt e/w York 13.55 - Lahaag 1pt e/w
The Lonsdale Cup has to be considered a decent renewal with Estimate in the field and she could end up looking value but comes with risks. It should be between her, Cavalryman and Pale Mimosa and I've opposed the Godolphin runner all season so am not about to stop now. The Weld filly ran as well as could have been expected on reappearance behind a Gold Cup winner before winning well last time in Listed company and I think she'll win this at 7/2. Estimate is the danger given she was in season last time but she had a massively hard race at Ascot and she's perhaps most effective over a little further. York 14.30 - Pale Mimosa 2pt win
I put this horse up at Sandown when he bumped into Elite Army (and Gold Trail), then backed him back at a mile when he ran no sort of race. Did I see him entered to win on the bridle after a gliding op? Did I heck. Yes this is chasing in its finest form, searching for justice, financial and professional, but I don't care. He wins, he has to. The horse is Munaaser in the hopefully lucky last at 2/1. York 16.55 - Munaaser 3pt win

Man On The Spot selects Naps from Ffos Las, Newmarket, York and Hamilton for our daily Yankee. Richard Hannon trains York nap Acaster Malbis 14:45 Newmarket TRM GNF (GUT Nutrition Formula) Nursery The Hannon yard has won the last two renewals and has three runners in this with Tom Hark making most appeal of those. He attempted to make all when runner-up over 7f at Sandown last time but Pasticcio succeeded in making every yard to beat a subsequent winner on the Turf course at Lingfield last month. Epsom winner SCUTUM (NAP) has found things happening too quickly over 7f recently. But this longer trip will give him more time to find top gear and he gets the nod. Brighton maiden winner Shaakis failed to cope in Class 2 company at Goodwood earlier this month andPopeswood looks pretty exposed in this company. 14:55 Ffos Las totepool Home Of Pool Betting Maiden Fillies' Stakes Zora Seas was clear of the third when only beaten half-a-length over course and distance 10 days ago but that was still a comparatively disappointing effort from Brian Meehan's filly. Water Queen was another who failed to land the odds last time and had also been market leader when only fifth at Newmarket in May. RAMSHACKLE (NAP) was easy to back on debut at Headquarters in April but shaped very nicely in a race that's produced a host of winners. She returns from a break but should be good enough to beat these with the ex-French Brisk having her first start for David Evans. Money Back if the favourite wins the first at York! 16:20 York Sky Bet Are You In Convivial Maiden Stakes The Hannon yard have won two of the last four and ACASTER MALBIS (NAP) can keep up the run in a very tricky race. He was only headed in the dying strides by Gibeon on soft going at Newmarket and today's quicker ground can enable him to hang on. Swot made a bright start behind Sawaahel over 6f at Headquarters and that will have brought him to concert pitch for this while Dissolution caught the eye at Newbury and will improve plenty for the experience. Able Sprit, Beach Samba, Brando, Golden Spun and Bright Flash all made fair debuts and any one of them could improve enough to take this while, of the newcomers, the superbly-bred Muffarreh catches the eye as he's related to numerous classy performers. 18:35 Hamilton Park Download The Ladbrokes App Handicap Recent Ayr winner Klynch and Half A Billion would prefer testing ground while both of Ralphy's Boy's wins this season have come over 7f. Bunceremains 9lb higher than last month's victory at Ayr and Lothair usually struggles in this grade. RED PIKE (NAP) scored over today's trip at Haydock back in May and has run well over 7f in a couple of subsequent starts. Bryan Smart's charge looks capable of winning off his current mark so gets the vote.

Ryan Moore has another full book of rides at York on Friday, and here the Betfair Ambassador talks exclusively to Betfair about each one as well as revealing some interesting news on former Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate...
13:55 York - Stomachion
Would have caught a few people's attention when eighth over 1m2f at Goodwood last time, where he was slow to get into gear from a wide draw at the start, and could never get into the race thereafter. He stayed on well enough in the straight from a detached position, though he wasn't entirely happy on quick ground on the downhill track there. He races off the same mark here, and I think he can certainly be competitive off it. Even though he has won on fast ground, I would prefer a bit more rain for him - in fact the more rain the better - but I think 1m4f on good ground around here will be fine for him. It's fair to say that he has a leading chance in this, though there are clearly any numbers of dangers in this 20-runner handicap.
14:30 York - Estimate
First things first, I don't think that she was suited by Goodwood last time, going downhill there on fast ground was not ideal. But I suspected that there was more to it than that at the time. I wasn't happy with her going down as she was nervous and nearly buried me at the start, which she has never done before. So we got her checked out, and we found out that she was in season, something that isn't always apparent unless you test for it. And that would explain a lot in the race itself as we were pestered throughout by Brown Panther, as the colt must have smelt a bit of love in the air.
Anyway, we know that she is much better than she showed there and if she returns to the form of her Ascot Gold Cup second then I would hope that she is capable of beating these, even given that Cavalryman comes here in great nick and you have to respect the likes of Pale Mimosa. She is in good order at home.
15:05 York - Heaven's Guest
I picked up a couple of valuable handicaps on him at Newmarket and Ascot last season, and he landed another big pot when winning a 7f handicap off a mark of 101 at the July course last month. But he didn't run up that level of form when tried over a mile for the first time at Goodwood on his latest start, so it looks a sensible move to drop him back down to 7f. Has run well in both his starts here in the past, and has each way chances in a competitive listed race, in which 10lb pretty much covers the field.
15:40 York - Extortionist
I won't say that he didn't handle the track at Goodwood last time, because by splitting Take Cover and Moviesta there he probably ran a career-best, despite ending up on the fair rail. But I do think that this flatter track will suit him better. He took time to find his form this season but impressed me when winning previously at Sandown, and he looks a sprinter on the up.
He will have to a take another big step forward to be winning at this level though, as we all know that Sole Power and Shea Shea are top-notch Group 1 sprinters on their day - on fast ground Sole Power is clearly the one to beat - and Cougar Mountain ran a huge race when fifth in July Cup, less than three weeks after winning on his debut. And you have to respect Goodwood winner Take Cover and Hot Streak, too.
16:20 York - White Lake
I am hearing that there are several well-fancied horses in this race. Our Dissolution is a good horse and ran promisingly when fifth at Newbury, and there are plenty of encouraging words doing the rounds for some of the newcomers as well, as well as some of those with experience. So my mount will probably have to be well above average to win this on his debut. I don't know too much about him at the moment but he is a related to a number of winners and, being a Pivotal out of a 1m winner, this 7f trip looks an ideal starting point for him. I imagine he looks the part, too, as he cost 240,000gns as a yearling.
16:55 York - Extremity
Won narrowly for me on fast ground in first time cheekpieces at Goodwood last time, with the third a fair distance away in third, so a 7lb rise is just about fair enough. That victory proved he stays this mile, but he will need to step up again off his revised mark. But Hugo has always thought a fair bit of him, and hopefully he can still be competitive off 91. Looks adaptable as regards ground, so the weather is not a massive issue, but I believe that they think he is better on a fast surface.

Tomorrow's Ebor is Europe's richest handicap, and is usually one of the most competitive races of the year.
This year, however, one horse dominates the market as 5-year-old Pallasator has been a strong ante-post favourite since winning at Ascot four weeks ago. Several horses he beat that day have won since and the form looks particularly strong.
Pallasator's trainer is noted handicap merchant Sir Mark Prescott, who typically sends the bookies running for cover when he sends out a fancied runner.
Just 3/1 last week, he's out to 4/1 after being drawn next to the car park in 22, but as a hold-up horse this shouldn't inconvenience him much and it could be a question of how much he has in hand at 3.50pm.
National Hunt fans might want to have a tickle on former County Hurdle winner Ted Veale at 20/1.

Race Ratings Saturday, 23 August - 3.30 Goodwood Celebration Mile (Group 2) 1m
0-3705 Belgian Bill 22 6 9-4 George Baker Has developed into a solid handicapper at dis- tances between 7f and 1m. Was beaten nar- rowly in a French Group 3 over distance last season, but doesn't quite have the form to take the fight to the best of these in this race. RATING 91 12-211 Captain Cat 9 5 9-4 Roger Charlton Improving son of Dylan Thomas who ran his best race to date last time, when winning a Group 3 at Salisbury last week. Yard going well and has a good long-term record in this race. RATING 98 899125 Chil The Kite 7 5 9-4 Hughie Morrison Admirable campaigner who was just held by Producer in a Turkish Group 2 last season and was second in this year's Royal Hunt Cup. Was- n't seen to best effect when running on his own on the stands' side in the Hungerford Stakes last time, but nor does he look an obvious win- ner in this race. RATING 95 22-567 Emell56 4 9-4 Richard Hannon Runner-up several times in Listed company at two and three, but form has waned recently and others readily preferred. RATING 89 0-5511 Farraaj 42 5 9-4 Roger Varian Group 1-placed at the Breeders' Cup Turf three seasons ago, and started last season brightly with victory in Winter Derby. Form tailed off but seems back on track with two latest wins over 10f in decent handicaps suggesting he could go well from the front on this drop back in trip. RATING 97 6-0716 Glory Awaits 25 4 9-4 Kevin Ryan The runner-up in last season's 2,000 Guineas, this son of Choisir got back on track at Chester two starts ago, when winning a 7f Listed race. Was keeping on when sixth in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at this course last time, so step up to 1m may help. Place possibilities. RATING 96 54426 Producer 7 5 9-4 Richard Hannon Disappointed in the Hungerford Stakes last time, just two days after finishing second to Captain Cat at Salisbury in a Group 3. If back up to speed for this race, could be thereabouts on best form, if not an outright winner. RATING 95 02402 Trade Storm 35 6 9-4 David Simcock Has run just the once this summer, after busy time in Dubai earlier in the year, when second in a Group 2 and fourth in a Group 1, both over nine furlongs. Probably matched that form last time, when second in a conditions race at Hay- dock and probably has a bit to find to match last year's form when third in this race. RATING 93 915223 Bow Creek 22 3 8-12 Mark Johnston Has progressed into this season to become a top handicapper, finishing second in the Britan- nia Stakes, and made a fair step into Pattern races when third over course and distance last time in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes. Could go well at a price. RATING 97 15 Cougar Mountain 42 3 8-12 A P O ́Brien Unexposed son of Fastnet Rock who has won a maiden and finished a solid fifth in the Group 1 July Cup. Drops down in class for this race, but interesting that respected connections are stepping him up in trip (unproven over further than 6f), though pedigree suggests he should have stamina.RATING 98 2-5132 Hors De Combat 22 3 8-12 James Fanshawe Stable knows the time of day in these races and beat Bow Creek when second in the Thor- oughbred Stakes last time. Less exposed than some and improving nicely. Market may prove a good guide. RATING 99 332113 Master Carpenter 34 3 8-12 Rod Millman Possibly held by combination of testing ground and 10f in French Group 2 last time, having recorded back-to-back wins previously, includ- ing in Listed and Group 3 races over 1m and 9f. Another who might sneak a place on best form. RATING 95 36113 Moohaarib 28 3 8-12 Marco Botti Yard currently firing in the winners and this un- exposed son of Oasis Dream has progressed up the handicap this season, but needs to find a whole lot more to enter serious calculations in this company. RATING 93 4-1914 What About Carlo 44 3 8-12 Eve Johnson Houghton Won maiden over course and distance this time last year and has improved nicely in be- tween, winning a 10f handicap at Epsom's Derby Day meeting two starts ago. Shouldn't be overly inconvenienced by drop back in trip but might lack the class of the expected protagonists. RATING 94 1-1112 Muteela 22 3 8-9 Mark Johnston Run of four wins culminated with victory in the Listed Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot and was only beaten a quarter of a length when second at this course in a Group 3 against her own sex. Interesting on official figures, given her fillies' weight allowance and expectation of further improvement. RATING 97 60123 Darwin 24 4 9-4 A P O ́Brien Seems best at 1m, though did win a 6f Listed race this season. Was beaten only a shade over a length by Kingman when third in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes and that form entitles him to respect in this company. RATING 100 ===========================================
NOTEBOOK.
Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor looks to have a maiden winner in the waiting with the two-year-old Shamardal colt, POWER GAME , who overcame a slow start to finish with a flourish in the 6f maiden at Kempton last Monday. In fact, Power Game wasn't beaten at all far by the odds on winner, and as one out of a dam who finished second in the Italian Oaks, he may have a bit of class, too. Given the pedigree, he may well stay distances up to a mile by next season. In the same race, the James Fanshawe-trained PRESTO BOY ran much better than on his first two starts, to finish fourth. The apparent improvement could be due to a tongue tie and although he lost two places in the final furlong, he may find easier opportunities now he qualifies for nursery handi- caps after this third start. In the 6f juvenile maiden at Windsor, Roger Charl- ton's SKATE was unlucky to bump into an exciting debutant in ACES , trained by Charles Hills. The pair went clear in the last two furlongs and Aces asserted over Skate, the 2/1 favourite easily enough. The winner has entries in the Middle Park Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes, and he looked very professional and is if he won with a bit in hand. Skate finished clear of the remainder and deserves to win a maiden before long. ======================================== RACING NEWS.
Leading Jumps trainer Nicky Henderson reported that stable stars Sprinter Sacre and Simonsig had returned to training this week after problems meant they missed last sea- son. Their absence arguably cost Henderson the chance to retain his Champion trainer's title, and he reported that former Champion Chaser Sprinter Sacre will probably return to action in the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown this December, while Simonsig, win- ner of the 2013 Arkle Chase, is likely to be aimed at the King George VI Chase at Kempton's Boxing Day meeting. This season's King Edward VII Stakes winner, Eagle Top, swerved a possible run in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York this week after connec- tions reported that the John Gosden-trained three-year-old colt needed more time having had a hard race when fourth in the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month. Although Gosden has reportedly said that Eagle Top will not run in the St Leger, he remains prominent in the betting for the Doncaster Classic, but also has an option in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October. St Leger ante-post fancy Elite Army has been ruled out of next month's Classic after trainer Saeed Bin Suroor reported that he needed more time to recover from a mid-season injury setback. Suroor said he was happy with Elite Army but that he needed more time, and men- tioned the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot's meeting in early October as a possible option. Elite Army won the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer, one of three wins in his first four starts, and had been the 6/1 second-favourite in the ante-post markets for the St Leger. Just a couple of weeks after his impressive win in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, John Gosden's star three-year-old miler Kingman notched up another Group 1 win when landing the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville last Sunday. Kingman, ridden by James Doyle, shrugged aside the holding ground to justify his 2/7 starting price, winning from the Freddie Head-trained Anodin and Richard Hannon's Olympic Glory, in third. Following the win, Kingman remained priced at 4/7 with some bookmakers for the QEII Stakes at Ascot's Champions Meeting.

============================================
STAT WATCH.
The stats proved their worth last week when our selected horses in the featured races yielded three individual winners (7/1, 5/4 and 4/1), in- cluding a one-two in the Listed juveniles race at Newbury, for which the Tote Exacta returned £3.20 to a £1 stake, plus two seconds (including at 7/1) and an 8/1-third to compliment our 7/1 winner in the big handicap sprint from Ripon. We'll be doing well to top those results this week, but with another afternoon of all-Flat racing for Channel 4 viewers this Saturday, from Goodwood (2.20, 2.55 and 3.30) and York (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 2.50), we hope our luck will carry forward. Last week (to Monday, 18 August) certainly proved successful for Richard Hughes, who rode 8 winners and chalked up a near 20% strike rate. While Hughes's winning tally may have been the best for the period, it was the second winning- most jockey Dane O'Neill (7 wins) who had the edge by strike rate (31%), ahead of Tony Hamilton (27%) and Ryan Moore (26%). The period seemed to be all about the Northern trainers, with Richard Fahey saddling the most (9), well clear of next-best David O'Meara's 6 winners, and the 5 of Mark Johnston. Veteran trainer Henry Candy also had a good week, and led the way by strike rate (more than 31%), ahead of O'Meara's 27%. The first of the scheduled televised races from Goodwood is at 2.20, the Group 3 Prestige Stakes, over 7f. Kevin Ryan's Calypso Beat possibly has the best form to date, having gone close in a Group 3 last time on soft ground. His two wins have come on good or slightly quicker ground, as expected at Goodwood this weekend. Calypso Beat did beat the Roger Varian-trained Tigrilla over 6f earlier in the season, but that horse has gone on to win over distance at Listed level, having looked to benefit for the step up in trip. James Fanshawe has the joint-leading strike rate at Goodwood (23%) of those trainers to have win- ners at the course over the past five seasons, with entries in the Group 2 Celebration Mile (3.30). His improving charge Hors De Combat went close over course and distance when sec- ond in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes last time. Another to consider is Roger Charlton's Captain Cat, who has won four times over dis- tance, including at this level last time, and the trainer's general strike rate in the past 14 days is 23%. At York, the Group 3 Strensall Stakes, at 2.05, looks a good opportunity for trainer Willie Haggas's Graphic, who has won at the course previously, and twice from 5 starts on the expected good ground. Furthermore, Haggas's runners have won 30% of their races in the past 14 days, and Haggas has trained a winner of this race in the last 10 years. David O'Meara's runners are currently in good form, and the up-and-com- ing trainer is second by wins at the course in the past five years, with Custom Cut looking the pick of his entrants, thanks to recent winning form on a variety of surfaces and over 1m. The feature race of the day is the valuable Ebor Handicap, over 1m 6f, which has tended to have been won by horses carrying less than 9st 5lb in the past 10 years. Sir Mark Prescott knows the time of day in this sort of race, and he has a cou- ple of entrants, including Pallasator, an improving winner over distance, and Big Thunder, who has also won over distance and has dropped back to a rating of 95, just 2lb higher than that off which he last won. Sir Michael Stoute's Bold Sniper is interesting as a winner on the expected ground and as one from a stable which has a good long- term record at the course. By Motivator and out of a Daylami mare, he should have the stamina to stay the distance. ==========================================

Telescope is likely to be campaigned overseas for the rest of the season. Sir Michael Stoute's four-year-old lost his proud record of never having finished outside the first two when he was third behind Australia and The Grey Gatsby in the Juddmonte International at York on Wednesday. Connections had already mooted a plan to run in the Breeders' Cup Turf, stepping back up to a mile and a half, while Stoute has also spoken in terms of a trip to Hong Kong, likely to be for the Vase over 12 furlongs, which he won in 2000 with Daliapour. "I spoke to Sir Michael this morning and he's come out of the race absolutely fine," said Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing. "He'll head to Santa Anita now, I think. We'd better dust off our passports now as Sir Michael was also mentioning Hong Kong." ======================================== Dermot Weld has all but ruled Free Eagle out of the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes but hopes to have the highly regarded colt ready for the KPMG Enterprise Stakes on the same September 13 card on Irish Champions Weekend. Owned by Moyglare Stud, the High Chaparral colt was sent off the 2-5 favourite to beat Australia in a Group Three at Leopardstown last season. He was well beaten but was still considered a major player in the Classics for this season. Unfortunately he suffered a setback in April which ruled him out of the majority of the season, but he is know back in training, with Weld targeting the new Group Three. "Free Eagle might make the Group Three on Irish Champions Weekend rather than the big race itself," said Weld. "It is over 10 furlongs on the same day and it looks a nice race to bring him back in. "So, if I get him ready in time, I think that might be where he'll start back." =========================================== Roger Charlton is treating the 188Bet Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor as just another stepping stone for Al Kazeem. Last year's three-time Group One winner returned to the racecourse after proving sub-fertile at stud and made his long-awaited comeback in a Listed race at Newbury last month, finishing a close fourth to Amralah, who has gone on to win again since. "At home he is a very happy and willing worker but it has surprised me how hard it has been to get him back to full fitness," the trainer told his website. "As horses get older they tend to get more relaxed and lazy in their work. He is in terrific shape and his race at Newbury has brought him forward, but there should be more improvement to come." Marco Botti takes the wraps off another of his recruits from Australia, Bayrir, who won the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington for his initial trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre. True Story represents Godolphin, while Gifted Girl attempts to make amends for a luckless recent run at Salisbury. The Jeremy Noseda-trained Grandeur, who was last seen in Britain winning the main event on Lingfield's Good Friday card, is a significant non-runner. True Story was turned over as the 9-4 favourite in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock last time, but connections remain bullish about his chances. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor told "True Story is doing well - he came out of his run at Haydock in good form and has been working nicely. A mile and a quarter is a good trip for him and I am hoping he can run well." ================================== Roger Charlton has admitted the "bounce factor" has entered his mind ahead of Captain Cat's run in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile at Goodwood. The lightly raced five-year-old had not been seen since winning on All-Weather Championship Finals Day in April when he routed a decent field in the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury just nine days ago. However, there are some who pay great credence to a horse needing a longer break after winning off the back of an absence. Charlton has seen nothing at home on the gallops in the interim to prevent Captain Cat from running, though, and will let him take his chance in the Group Two. "Captain Cat attempts to follow up his stylish win at Salisbury last week in the Celebration Mile Group Two," the Beckhampton handler told his website. "He appeared to win without having a hard race and he produced an impressive turn of foot in the final furlong. Having not run since April there is always the 'bounce factor', but he appears to be very happy and fresh at home." What About Carlo rises in grade after performing well in competitive handicaps this season. Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton said: "He's stepping up in class but we either do this or he's lumping big weights around in handicaps. We'll see if he's up to it and the ground looks like being perfect, so there'll be no excuse on that front. "He's a nice horse and will be even better next year. I think he'll run well, he's certainly got an each-way chance." Richard Hughes misses the last day of York's Ebor meeting for Goodwood and takes the ride on Richard Hannon's Producer, who is joined in the field by stablemate Emell, the mount of Harry Bentley. "Producer did not enjoy the soft ground in the Hungerford at Newbury last week, and Richard sensibly looked after him," the trainer told his website. "He should appreciate the better going he will encounter here. "Emell is a Listed horse stepping up in class, but prize-money goes down to sixth so, hopefully, he won't come back empty-handed either." Belgian Bill is used to running in big-field handicaps and enjoyed his day in the sun when winning the Royal Hunt Cup last season. This year he has endured a succession of luckless passages, so trainer George Baker hopes the smaller field will bring about a change of fortune. "We had our luck last year it seems and it has totally deserted us this year," said Baker. "We've been banging our head in handicaps so we'll swing the bat at a Group Two instead. "This is massively competitive, but the owners were keen to have a go and it works out perfectly before his trip to Istanbul for the Topkapi Trophy in two weeks. "He could have run in the handicap earlier in the card, but we'll have a go. We'll need an enormous amount of luck but I'm looking forward to it." Master Carpenter has taken his form to a new level this season and lost nothing in defeat behind Western Hymn in France last time out. "He's had a nice break since France and he's nice and fresh now," said trainer Rod Millman. "I'd prefer a bit of rain overnight and there is some forecast. The mile will suit him, I think. "There are several races in France in the autumn I've been looking at and he's nearly guaranteed his ground out there. The big thing is he stays in training with me next year, which is good news." ================================== Local owner Ritchie Fiddes will realise a long-held ambition when the unbeaten Fendale runs in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes at York. The Bryan Smart-trained juvenile was entered in the Group Two without ever having had a run as he was slow to come to hand. But having always shown plenty on the gallops, it has been a relief to connections that he has won his first two races, living up to their expectations. "He's two out of two and he hasn't been touched with the whip yet so we've no idea how good he is," said Fiddes. "You'd rather be going there with an unexposed horse than one which you know how good he is and has had his limitations exposed. "He's won two, despite being very green. Last time he was on and off the bridle but he did it so easy in the end. This is a massive step up, we know that, but we'll get to see how good he is." The winning owner of the Gimcrack gives a speech to the industry at a black-tie dinner in December, and Fiddes would not shy away from the task. He said: "When I bought five yearlings last year I desperately wanted a runner in the Gimcrack, but the entries have to be made so early that this lad hadn't even run. Thankfully it wasn't a wasted entry, and I'd love to be giving the speech." Another unbeaten colt in the field is the Irish raider Accepted, trained by Tommy Stack. Also two from two, his sire, Approve, won the Gimcrack in 2010. Accepted beat Aidan O'Brien's Simply A Star, a half-sister to Irish Oaks winner Bracelet, in a Listed race at Tipperary on his most recent outing in July. "It's a very competitive race and it will be interesting to see how he goes," said Stack's son and assistant, Fozzy. "He's done nothing wrong so far and he's ready for a step up. The ground should suit him and we're looking forward to it." Richard Hannon, unsurprisingly for a prestigious two-year-old race, has two solid chances in Baitha Alga and Beacon. The former, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, won the Woodcote at Epsom and followed up in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Beacon, owned by another Harry Herbert-managed syndicate in Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, claimed a Sandown Listed event but was beaten at odds-on in the Molecomb at Goodwood. The Marlborough handler told his website: "Baitha Alga has the 3lb penalty for winning the Norfolk, but we think this is the right race for him. He is so straightforward - very uncomplicated - and Frankie (Dettori) has loved him from day one. He is such a professional. "However, Beacon is a good horse, too, and, whereas Baitha Alga is going for four wins off the spin, Beacon should be going for five. He was very unlucky in the Molecomb at Goodwood, and (Richard) Hughesie was the first to hold his hands up when he dismounted. "He felt six (furlongs) would probably suit the colt better as they get him at it early on over five, so all in all we have two live chances." Charlie Hills runs Muhaarar, who was third to Ivawood in the July Stakes and raced keenly when filling the same spot behind the highly-rated Kodi Bear at Ascot last time out. The trainer said: "I think he'll run really well. At Ascot we were fighting him for most of the race in an effort to get him to settle. We're dropping him back down to six furlongs and I think that will be right up his street." The Great War has been declared a non-runner as Aidan O'Brien will not chance the well-regarded youngster due to concerns about the suitability of the ground on the Knavesmire. He has been declared for the Irish Field Curragh Stakes at the County Kildare circuit. ======================================== A positive ride from William Buick helped Glenard get off the mark for the campaign with a determined triumph in the Sky Bet Transfer Fund Stakes at York. Last seen finishing third behind red-hot Ebor favourite Pallasator at Ascot under more patient tactics, the Charlie Hills-trained four-year-old was quickly away on the Knavesmire and was soon bowling along at the head of affairs. Buick kicked clear early in the straight to get his rivals under pressure, but Salutation covered the move and looked likely to win the argument when heading Glenard inside the final furlong. The 12-1 shot roared back admirably, though, and passed the post a neck to the good. Dolphin Village was a further length and a quarter away in third, with Pearl Castle fourth. Hills said: "William gave him a great ride. That was the plan (to make the running) and it's nice when you get the script right. "I've always liked him and knew he was capable of winning a race like this. He looked like he was going to win the Northumberland Plate and he looks like a nice horse for Australia. He'll probably go to the Mallard Stakes (September 12) next at Doncaster." David Elsworth's Master The World (16-1) quickened up impressively to win the Nationwide Accident Repair Services Stakes under Kieren Fallon. Owner Chris Benham said: "We ran him in the Guineas and we rushed him for that, but he's shown how good he is today." ====================================== Absolutely So atoned for a near-miss in the Bunbury Cup with a win in the Sky Bet City Of York Stakes on the Knavesmire. Andrew Balding's four-year-old was sent off favourite for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot only to find the ground too fast, but he bounced back to form at Newmarket last time out. He beat all bar Heaven's Guest - unplaced in this Listed heat - and was sent off the 6-1 co-favourite to gain some compensation. Oisin Murphy had him in the perfect position throughout as Glory Awaits set a good pace, and he took aim at the leader with a furlong and a half to run. Kevin Ryan's charge battled on gamely to hold off Glen Moss for second, but there was a length and a half to the winner. Balding said: "He's always been a very talented horse and ran a good race at Newmarket. We had trouble with sore shins with him last year, but he seems to be over that now so we'll move on from here. "It's always a nice carrot when you see prize money has increased, so it's a good race to win. He's in the Qipco Sprint on Champions Day, so we'll look at that." There were some very expensive and choicely bred newcomers in the valuable Sky Bet Are You In Convivial Maiden Stakes, but they were all put in their place by the Luca Cumani-trained White Lake. Sent off at 25-1 despite costing 240,000 guineas as a yearling, the Pivotal colt came with a withering run away from the majority of the pack to win very impressively. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, his retained rider Andrea Atzeni was suspended so Ryan Moore stepped into the breach, which made his starting price all the more surprising. Mark Johnston's Secret Brief attempted to make all and beat the rest by three and a quarter lengths, but he was two lengths behind the winner. Matt Cumani, assistant to his father, said: "That was very exciting and he's our first two-year-old winner. "He looked good at home but like all of ours we thought he might just need the experience. He obviously just has a lot of ability. "Ryan said he only had to give him one flick. He mentioned the Horris Hill and the Autumn Stakes, which is a race we like." ======================================= Pale Mimosa kept Estimate at bay to claim the Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup at York. Having just her third start of the season, the Dermot Weld-trained mare travelled powerfully up the long Knavesmire straight in the hands of Pat Smullen after Forgotten Voice had taken the field along. Hitting the front just over a furlong out, the 2-1 favourite stayed on strongly to hold the late thrust of Ryan Moore on the Queen's Estimate, who stuck on well but could never quite get to the winner, going down by half a length. Smullen said: "She's a very good mare when everything is right for her, she's just a bit fragile and the boss has done a great job of minding her and keeping her right. "I was glad we had a drop of rain last night as it just took the real firmness out of the ground, that was our concern, but when conditions are right she is good. "She travelled beautifully and a t halfway I was very confident, they just give you that feel when everything is going right. She's not just a dour stayer, she has a turn of foot as well. She doesn't need it very soft, just a bit of kindness in it. Hopefully we'll have a good autumn with her." Weld added: "I was delighted with her, she's a very progressive mare. She won well at Leopardstown and was here two years ago in the Galtres. They were two very brave fillies fighting it out, her heart was in the right place under a tactical ride. "The race was run to suit her and Pat had her in the right position throughout. The plan was to sit handy and not many others ride a better type of race than Pat. We had no worries about the ground today and it looked a very good renewal." Asked about a Melbourne Cup bid, Weld said: "We'll see. The problem is she loves a bit of ease in the ground, and the track here was beautiful. We'll think about it, and certainly discuss it in great detail. She's a wonderful staying mare to own." The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Estimate was producing a much better performance than when disappointing in the Goodwood Cup, where she was last of the eight runners. Her Majesty's racing manager John Warren said: "It's great to get her back on track as we were disappointed after Goodwood. "There were other things (apart from the track). As Ryan (Moore) said, she was probably in season, but we didn't want to make it seem like sour grapes. She has exonerated herself today and we have to get our heads together and discuss the options. "There is the Doncaster Cup, but we are also keen to look at the Irish St Leger. That is a shorter trip, but it might be something to consider to sharpen her up with a view to possibly going for the Melbourne Cup. "The Queen will have a big input in making the decision on whether she does go to Australia. The Queen won't be able to make the trip, so if the filly is going to travel, it will have to be on her own merits. "The Queen will always do what is right by the filly and if she does go to Australia there will be a knock-on effect to the breeding season and I suspect she will be retired at the end of this year. "Sir Michael said today's race in itself was a good enough trial for the Melbourne Cup, so we'll see. It would be a big decision and a hell of a shout, but if the Queen thought it was the right thing to do I suspect she might be keen. She is a very lightly raced filly and it would be a bit of fun." Stoute added: "You've got to be very pleased with that and it was much more like it. We had a blip at Goodwood and it is great to see her bounce back. She's in the Doncaster Cup and also the Irish Leger. I would have thought it will be one or the other." ===================================== Sole Power confirmed his status as the king of the five-furlong division with a performance of stunning domination under Richard Hughes in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York. The silence was deafening in the Knavesmire grandstands in 2010 when 100-1 shot Sole Power claimed a shock victory in the Group One contest for then-relatively unheralded trainer Eddie Lynam. How things have changed in the subsequent four years, with the County Meath-based handler now affectionately known as 'Fast Eddie' and widely regarded as one of the finest trainers of sprinters in the sport. Sole Power has flown the flag admirably, proving his three-figure strike was no fluke with a number of stellar performances in victory and defeat, with his back-to-back triumphs in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot a joy to behold. Back at York having accumulated an army of supporters, he was an 11-4 favourite, despite suffering a bout of ringworm after returning home from an aborted July Cup mission at Newmarket last month. With Hughes on his back again, the very definition of a marriage made in heaven, Sole Power was ridden to play his cards late as usual. While a number of his rivals began to falter in the heat of a furious pace, Sole Power was remarkably still full of running as the race reached its climax. Hughes was coolness personified as he sat motionless with just half a furlong to run and when the gap finally came, Sole Power merely had to be shaken up to go through the gears in effortless style. There was just half a length in it at the line, but in reality, he was in a different league to his opponents, with just a short head separating the second and third, Stepper Point and Extortionist. The victory means Lynam has won every Group One sprint in Britain so far this season, with Sole's younger stable companion Slade Power dominating over six furlongs in the Diamond Jubilee and July Cup. The quietly spoken Lynam said: "Two weeks ago, he had American ringworm. No word of a lie, we had the rugs off him, his diet changed, we had to hand walk him and couldn't train him. "You can't sweat them with it (ringworm). You can only walk them. He hadn't galloped since Saturday. "He's a super horse, a horse of a lifetime, it's just the way he does it. He was about 97 points lighter (starting price) than he was four years ago! We're lucky to have him. "We haven't run him in Ireland for a good few years. There's a race on Champions Weekend (Flying Five Stakes, September 14) and we'd like to support it. "We'll give him a blow-out in Longchamp in the Abbaye, keep him ticking over, and then Hong Kong. I'd love another go at that." Of the winning ride, Lynam said: "I think those are the rides Richard likes, he enjoys it more than we do, but he was excellent on him - full credit to him, he's a top-class jockey and it was a first-class ride. I always felt he was going to get there." Hughes said: "He's brilliant, he's made for me. When I was 14 or 15 I dreamed about riding horses like this, and doing it like that." Trainer William Muir said of the gallant Stepper Point: "I know how good he is, but he's always overlooked. We know what he likes and doesn't like, but we keep running him and he always runs his race. "Sole Power is the best sprinter in Europe, we just can't beat him - we're not far behind him but I thought we'd beaten him today. I don't know where we'll go next." ================================== Andrea Atzeni has been announced as the new retained first jockey for Qatar Racing. Jamie Spencer stunned the racing world on Thursday with his announcement that he would be retiring from the saddle at the end of the current season to take up a new management role in Sheikh Fahad's operation. A replacement for 34-year-old Spencer was expected to be named soon, and Italian-born Atzeni had been widely tipped for the role, being odds-on when bookmakers opened betting. Oisin Murphy, the rising star of the apprentice ranks, has also been announced as a retained jockey for Qatar Racing after Harry Bentley's two-year contract expires at the end of 2014. Their roles will come into effect from January 2015. Atzeni, 23, has impressed in riding for the likes of Roger Varian, and he said: "I feel very privileged to have been asked to ride as first jockey for Qatar Racing. "I am excited at the prospect and look forward to repaying the faith Sheikh Fahad and his brothers have shown in appointing me. "I would like to thank all the trainers who have supported and helped me in my career, without whom I would not have received this opportunity. "In particular, I would like to thank Roger Varian and his wife Hanako for their support. I credit Roger with putting put me on the map, through horses such as Kingston Hill. "I am very grateful to Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and Luca Cumani, who have both been terrific to ride for, and to Robert Eddery, who has also been a great supporter." David Redvers, racing and bloodstock manager to Qatar Racing, said: "With Jamie retiring and Harry concluding his two-year contract, Sheikh Fahad is delighted to have secured the services of Andrea and Oisin for Qatar Racing. "He has also asked me to reiterate his gratitude to both Jamie and Harry for all of their hard work, skill and professionalism. "Whilst Jamie comes into the Qatar Racing management team, Harry will continue to ride for us when the opportunities allow. Harry is a gifted horseman and his results for us and others over the last two seasons have more than repaid Sheikh Fahad's faith that he is destined for the very top. We wish him continued luck and success. "Andrea and Oisin have impressed us greatly this season and we are delighted to agree terms with them to take effect from the start of 2015." Bentley revealed he had been informed of the reshuffle on Wednesday and said in his column on racinguk.com: "There has been a reshuffle, with Jamie Spencer retiring, and questions have no doubt been asked after what has been a quiet season for Qatar. "These things have a habit of working themselves out, and I have no doubt that this will be for the best in the long-run. I am grateful for the opportunities Qatar have offered and I still might pick up the odd ride for them next season. "I have sat on some lovely horses through my role, and came within an ace of winning the 1000 Guineas on Lightning Thunder this season, before finishing second on her again in the Irish Guineas. "Being second jockey means I am required to travel up and down the country for what might be just one ride - which is fair enough given they are my employers, but it has meant I cannot commit to other trainers. "The upside is you hope to take some high-profile rides when there are two or more Qatar runners in a race, or if Jamie is required elsewhere. However, I wasn't always guaranteed that. "I am 22 and need to make my mark in the game and kick on. Hopefully with a clean slate from next year I can pick up more rides, and subsequently more winners. I am down on both this year. "I haven't really thought about new arrangements as the news is fresh, but my agent and I will be working hard going forward."

WINCANTON SECOND APRIL MEETING 2014
The 32Red Thunderstruck II Slot Handicap Chase
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority held an enquiry on 22 August 2014 into the analysis of the urine ordered to be taken from PRINCE OF DREAMS, trained by Edward de Giles, by the Stewards at Wincanton after the gelding had finished fifth in the 32Red Thunderstruck II Slot Handicap Chase on 13 April 2014. The sample tested positive for a prohibited substance, in breach of Rule (C)53 of the Rules of Racing. The Panel also considered whether or not to take action under Rule (A)74.2 of the Rules of Racing in respect of the possible disqualification of the gelding.
The urine taken from PRINCE OF DREAMS was found to contain dembrexine, which is a prohibited substance. The trainer did not exercise his right to have the ‘B’ sample analysed. After considering the evidence, including a statement from de Giles, the Panel was unable to establish the source of the substance, and could not therefore be satisfied that the administration of the substance was accidental.
The Panel accepted an admission from de Giles that he was in breach of Rule (C)53 and imposed a fine of £1000.
Under Rule (A)74.2 the Panel disqualified PRINCE OF DREAMS from the race.
The Panel also informed de Giles that all the horses in his care may be the subject of examination and the taking of samples for analysis provided for in Rule (A)49 within the next 12 months. ===================================

SEDGEFIELD SECOND APRIL (EVENING) MEETING 2014
The Ellen Timney Foundation ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority held an enquiry on 22 August 2014 into the analysis of the urine ordered to be taken from VERKO (FR), trained by Micky Hammond, by the Stewards at Sedgefield after the gelding had finished fourth in the Ellen Timney Foundation ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle on 16 April 2014. The sample tested positive for a prohibited substance, in breach of Rule (C)53 of the Rules of Racing. The Panel considered whether or not to take action under Rule (A)74.2 of the Rules of Racing in respect of the possible disqualification of the gelding.
The urine taken from VERKO (FR) was found to contain phenylbutazone, which is a prohibited substance. The trainer did not exercise his right to have the ‘B’ sample anaylsed. After considering the evidence, including a statement from Hammond, the Panel agreed that on the balance of probabilities, in light of the horse stabled in the box next to VERKO (FR) being due to receive a dose of Equipalazone (Bute) on 14 April 2014, that the most likely source of the positive finding was as a result of a mix up in the feeding and the dose of bute given to VERKO (FR) in error.
The Panel accepted an admission from Hammond that he was in breach of Rule (C)53 and imposed a fine of £1000.
Under Rule (A)74.2 the Panel disqualified VERKO (FR) from the race placing STEADY PROGRESS (IRE) fourth.
The Panel also informed Hammond that all the horses in his care may be the subject of examination and the taking of samples for analysis provided for in Rule (A)49 within the next 12 months. ===================================

LUDLOW MAY MEETING 2014
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on 22 August 2014 held an enquiry to consider whether or not Ludlow Race Club Limited, the Managing Executive of Ludlow Racecourse, had committed a breach of Rule (F)15.2.3. of the Rules of Racing, in light of BHA General Instruction 10.1 para 18, headed “Starting Arrangements, Farriers and Advance Flag Operators (AFOs)”, in that after the Starter raised his flag to signal a false start to the 2nd race at Ludlow on 11 May 2014, the AFO failed to raise the yellow recall flag and blow his whistle so as to advise the riders that it was a false start. As a consequence of the AFO’s failure, the race had to be declared ‘void’.
The panel noted that due to the circumstances of the start and the short distance to the first fence, the time available to the AFO to carry out his duties was restricted.
Having considered the evidence, the Panel found that the Executive was in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3.
The Panel fined the Executive £2750. =========================================

Disciplinary Panel - Other decisions
NEWBURY SECOND JUNE (EVENING) MEETING 2014
The Pump Technology Apprentice Handicap Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) held an enquiry on 22 August 2014 to consider an objection to ETON RAMBLER (USA), trained by George Baker, placed second in the Pump Technology Apprentice Handicap Stakes at Newbury on 24 June 2014, on the grounds that the rider, Ryan Tate, having ridden 50 winners or more prior to 21 June 2014 under the Rules of Racing or the Rules of a recognised Racing Authority, was not qualified to ride in this race in accordance with the conditions of the race.
The Panel noted that the BHA was satisfied that no disciplinary action should be taken against Tate.
Under Rule (A)74.2 the Panel disqualified ETON RAMBLER (USA) from the race, placing EMMAN BEE (IRE) second, THE DUCKING STOOL third and ROCKWEILLER fourth.

They heard evidence from the rider, Anna Hesketh, and the trainer’s representative. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the start the Stewards informed the trainer’s representative that future similar behaviour may result in the gelding being reported to the British Horseracing Authority.

Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start they accepted his explanation that the blindfold became stuck on the hood on his first attempt to remove it.
The Stewards noted that RASAMAN (IRE), placed third, and LOTHAIR (IRE), which dead heated for fourth, had interfered with RALPHY BOY (IRE), unplaced, inside the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved the placings of RASAMAN (IRE) and LOTHAIR (IRE).

Race 6 - 8:10pm THE JORDAN ELECTRICS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why P.J. McDonald, the rider of ROCK CANYON (IRE), which dead heated for fourth place, had appeared to stop riding shortly before the winning post. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they noted his explanation that he ran out of racing room and was in danger of clipping heels shortly before the line and therefore felt it prudent to stop riding in the final three strides.
Non-Race related incidents The Starter reported that HALF A BILLION (IRE), trained by Michael Dods, was unruly in the stalls and withdrawn. ON THE day Sole Power gave Eddie Lynam his fourth top-level sprint of the season the trainer revealed his hopes of winning all five open-age Group 1 British sprints had been dealt a blow, with Slade Power's Betfred Sprint Cup participation in doubt.
The Diamond Jubilee and July Cup winner has been afflicted by the same problem that nearly ruled King's Stand winner Sole Power out of the Nunthorpe and Paddy Power, son of owners David and Sabina, said: "Slade Power might miss the Sprint Cup."
The Haydock Group 1 is on September 6 and Slade Power faces a race against time, according to Power. He added: "He has suffered from the same skin infection as Sole Power and it might take him a bit more time to recover as he's still not able to sweat. It's still the plan to go to Haydock before Australia but we'll have to see."
Earlier Lynam told Channel 4 Racing that Slade Power's participation at Haydock was "unlikely".

It's the final day of the York Ebor meeting and Betfair Ambassador Ryan Moore has a full book of six rides on the Knavesmire, and here he talks exclusively to betting.betfair about each one as well as discussing the main opposition...
14:05 York - Graphic
This looks a pretty strong Group 3 depth-wise. Trade Storm has shown form at Group level 1 and ran well on his first start back from Dubai last time; Flying The Flag has his first start for Mike De Kock since winning a Group 3 by four lengths for Aidan last season; and in Custom Cut and Farraaj we have two fast-improving horses. But Graphic is the second best in on official ratings and comes here after a good win in a 1m Group 3 in France last time, is a course winner, stays this trip well and likes good ground, so he has plenty going for him, too. But I think Farraaj is the one to beat.
14:40 York - Rocket Ship
This looks a typical Melrose in that there are a whole host of progressive 3yos in here, eight of whom won last time out. Fortunately, my mount Rocket Ship is one of those, coming here after wide-margin wins at Catterick and Pontefract. Is 9lb higher than at Pontefract, which is by no means ideal, but he did win by four lengths there and there is every reason to believe - on run-style and pedigree - that the step up to 1m6f won't be any inconvenience at all. But, as I've said, six or seven of these can probably say the same and I think everyone will be going into this hopeful, not confident, of winning. Connecticut looks the one to beat.
15:15 York - Beacon
I was originally going to ride The Great War but he got pulled out on Friday morning and there is now a fair chance that I will be switched to Beacon, if I haven't been already. There isn't a lot between a few of these, and things are evened out further by the fact that probable form horse, the Norfolk winner Baitha Alga, who is said to be working well by the way, carries a 3lb penalty for that Group 2 win. And stablemate Beacon looks to hold a fair chance. He ran away with a listed race over 5f at Sandown and then met trouble in running when a shade unlucky in the Molecomb last time. If he lasts home here on his first attempt at 6f, then he certainly has the form to make an impact.
15:50 York - Bold Sniper
Everyone has been talking up Pallasator for this, and you can see why. He is officially 4lb well in, carrying just a 4lb penalty for his Ascot win last time, a race where the second and fourth have come out and won good prizes. This has clearly been his target for a while. But this is no one-horse race, and I rode Mighty Yar in a piece of work on Saturday and I can see him going well.
Bold Sniper ran another solid race when third in the John Smith's Cup here last time and I think that he will see out this longer trip well enough. But I don't think it is ideal that he is stepping up 4f between runs - even though he has won over 1m4f - and it certainly isn't that he is 2lb higher today. But we have left the hood off here as we feel that may have been holding him back - sometimes the hood can help them relax too much when it comes to the crunch at the end of races - and that could see him step forward. But I wouldn't have chosen stall 17 given the choice.
We all have the favourite to beat but he is clearly no good thing, and plenty will be fancying their chances against him, and the likes of Van Percy, Retirement Plan and Clever Cookie are just three more of those. The one I fancy most though is probably Wadi Al Hattawi, as he got no sort of run when seventh in the Duke Of Edinburgh last time and won well here back in May.
16:25 York - Moonraker
Mind Of Madness would be the one to beat here if coming back to the form of his Norfolk second but I think I have a decent chance on Moonraker. He took far too much of a hold when I rode him in the Richmond last time, and that keenness cost him towards the end of that 6f race as he dropped away in the closing stages. He steps back down to 5f here, which should be very much in his favour, and his debut defeat of Mubtaghaa on easy ground at Ascot was franked here on Thursday, too. I can see him going close.
17:00 York - Llanarmon Lad
Anything can win this by the looks of it, but my mount has plenty going for him. He finished third in the Convivial here as a 2yo back in 2011 and has held his form remarkably well this season, winning twice - I rode him when he won at Newmarket in June - and running well in defeat since. He is 3lb higher than when finishing a good second at Haydock last time, but that looks justified, and he acts well on good or ground with a bit of dig in it. Looks to hold as good a chance as most, and is nicely drawn in six.

View from connections ahead of Saturday's Betfred Ebor at York. Pallasator: Subject of major ante-post gamble for Ebor Sir Mark Prescott agrees Pallasator heads to York on Saturday in a similar position to his last winner of the Betfred Ebor. It is not unusual for the respected Newmarket trainer to field a short-priced favourite for a competitive and valuable handicap, but it is 20 years since Hasten To Add listed this one on the Knavesmire. Pallasator was bought by Qatar Racing after his two-length defeat of subsequent Glorious Goodwood winner Double Bluff in a handicap at Ascot, but Prescott ensured his usual jockey Luke Morris would stay on board. He must, though, negotiate a tricky draw in stall 22. Prescott said: "Hasten To Add, I thought, was sure to win the Cesarewitch and he didn't quite stay and then he won the Ebor. Pallasator ran well in the Cesarewitch to finish fifth, so they have a similar profile, I suppose. "This horse has always been quite difficult. He gets very hot before races. He's never been easy, but it's always been worthwhile." Facing Prescott are several former members of his yard, with Mutual Regard rattling off a four-timer for Heath House in very late 2012. He has appeared a couple of times this season for new trainer Johnny Murtagh, winning a Curragh handicap and then finishing third to reopposing top-weight Pale Mimosa. "Hopefully he has an each-way chance," said Murtagh. "We could have done without going up 11lb for his last win, so we've booked Louis Steward to take 5lb off his back. The horse is in good form and hopefully the rain stays away. He's a consistent horse and hopefully he'll be there at the finish." Repeater was an infrequent winner, if high class, for Prescott and he has continued in that mould for David O'Meara, who said: "He ran well in the John Smith's Northumberland Plate (third) and when second in a Listed race at Sandown in July. He didn't handle the track at all at Goodwood last time so I think we can put a line though that. A race like the Ebor suits him - he needs to be held up and weave his way through runners." Lady Cecil, who won last year's Ebor with Tiger Cliff, is double-handed. Mighty Yar, who only just made the cut, finished second to the progressive Kings Fete at the course last time, despite having stumbled at the start, while one-time Leger possible Retirement Plan is fresh from a victory at Ascot. Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah said of the latter: "He won at the Shergar Cup with the wonderful Emma-Jayne Wilson on board. He had a fairly slow start to the year so I hope he's still progressing. We're throwing him in at the deep end, but he's at the right end of the handicap. There's only 8lb between top to bottom, but that's what happens when you put good money up." There appears quiet confidence from William Haggas about the prospects for Dare To Achieve, who landed a Listed race at Hamilton in the spring but was only seventh in a handicap on Derby Day. "He's a different horse since Epsom, he returned very sore after that run," said Haggas. "I think he's in a good frame of mind going there and I think he's got a sporting chance. He'll like the ground, he'll like the trip, I think, and he'll like the course. There's not much between top and bottom of the weights, you have to be very good to get in these days. These exposed ones keep the unexposed ones out, but hopefully we're not that exposed. This has been the plan for a while, but not a plot."

View from connections ahead of Saturday's Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh. Gordon Lord Byron: Back at the Curragh on Saturday Gordon Lord Byron returns to action in Ireland for the first time since August last year as he headlines the Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday. The six-year-old has been a dream horse for Tom Hogan, with his globetrotting exploits seeing him notch Group One successes in Australia, Britain and France. Most recently the gelding was eighth to compatriot Slade Power in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Hogan: "He came back with a back injury after Ascot so we've given him a bit of time and he seems to be back on song. It's all about getting a run into him before Haydock (Sprint Cup on September 6, which he won in 2013). "We did a similar thing with him last year when he went to Leopardstown and won a Group Three. Hopefully he'll run well, but you would expect him to improve off it." Another Group One-winning Irish sprinter is in opposition as Evanna McCutcheon runs confirmed soft-ground lover Maarek, whose finest hour came in last season's Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp. The seven-year-old was beaten as the even-money favourite upon his return to action at the Curragh earlier in the month, although his trainer had warned he would need the outing having not been seen since the Curragh in May. McCutcheon said: "We wouldn't run him on ground that is any way firm but as long as they're making a good print in it, we'll let him take his chance. "He needed the run badly the last day and those small fields don't really suit him. The more trouble he gets into the better. He seems in good form and while we're taking it one race at a time, Haydock would be in the back of our minds if all goes well." The Tracey Collins-trained Majestic Queen has progressed from handicaps to make her mark at Group Three level. Collins said: "She's in good form and she's been competitive all year, but obviously this looks a very strong race and it's another step up for her. "I'd say six or seven furlongs is fine for her. A mile probably stretches her a bit. She's done very well through the summer and has strengthened up a lot, so we'll see how we go. She has entry in the Matron Stakes and in the Sprint Cup at Haydock, but we'll take it one race at a time." Jamesie rarely runs a bad race in and around Listed class and Group Threes but is without a win since striking in Dubai back in January. Trainer David Marnane said: "Jamesie is in great nick and ran a good race there the last day. "He came home well on ground that was plenty soft enough for him. Hopefully conditions will be more in his favour this weekend and he seems to like the Curragh. The stiff six (furlongs) there suits him well. It's a tough race, but hopefully he'll give a good account of himself."

Two Royal Ascot stars from opposite sides of the Atlantic clash in the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday. The Wow Signal: Prix Morny hopeful Neither John Quinn's The Wow Signal nor the Wesley Ward-trained Hootenanny have appeared since June, with the former having been briefly sidetracked following his Coventry Stakes victory. Ward had been planning to take Hootenanny to this week's Gimcrack Stakes but the logistics of travel meant France would be an easier journey for the juvenile than York. This could be a second consecutive Morny for the American trainer following No Nay Never's success 12 months ago. After Hootenanny, who has the same Coolmore connection, blitzed his rivals the Windsor Castle Stakes, Ward wondered whether he should have instead taken on The Wow Signal at Ascot. "I think mine is a pretty quality colt, but we went for the Windsor Castle stakes because he was beaten in his previous run on the dirt," he said. "I was disappointed with him that day because I think so highly of him. "But when he won at Ascot in a time that I believe was almost as fast as the older horses (in the King's Stand Stakes), I was kind of kicking myself as he was taking home a Listed race and The Wow Signal was winning a Group Two. "I think he's capable of running over a mile, he's a really big colt with a nice shoulder on him. "He's arrived in France, he's doing well, and I think even if the track gets a little wet, it will suit him." The Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh had been the target for The Wow Signal but Harry Herbert, advisor to owner Al Shaqab Racing, said: "It was infuriating to miss the Phoenix as he was in great form but literally just had a couple of coughs and his blood was slighty off which was agony for John Quinn and everybody. "He's back firing on all cylinders now and we're hopeful that he'll run a big race. "I think he'll get seven, he's out of a High Chaparral mare, so ultimately we'll be looking at the Dewhurst, something like that. "He's very good, a slightly forgotten horse, really, as he's disappeared since the Coventry." The remaining seven runners are trained on the continent, with the Aga Khan's filly Ervedya looking a very bright prospect when taking her unbeaten record to three in the Prix de Cabourg, a traditional trial over course and distance at the start of the month. Group Three winner Goken was not far behind Richard Hannon's Kool Kompany in the Prix Robert Papin, while Quevedo represents Spain.

15:50 Saturday 23rd August Racing Tips - 23/08/2014
The Melrose has some super types, none more so than Battersea and Connecticut. They are on the short side though and I'm surprised Captain Morley isn't pushing favouritism given his form behind Windshear and Elite Army. That is about the best form on offer and 9/1 looks worth taking. Adventure Seeker is 2nd choice but Farquhar has to go up at an overpriced 33/1. He ran badly here behind Connecticut when losing his action but put a line through that and he's progressive. Staying on in a hot handicap back at Haydock last time, he should relish the extra trip and has Frankie back on, with whom he won so well with back in May. York 14.40 - Farquhar 0.5pt e/w York 14.40 - Captain Morley 1pt e/w
The feature handicap at Goodwood has a bunch of likely lads at the top of the market and it's take your pick time. They are almost all up in the weights for recent, decent runs but make limited appeal. Jammy Guest and Safety Check are of interest but badly drawn and I'd rather take the price about Silent Bullet at 18/1 who may not have wanted to go past on his impressive reappearance but he was back from a long absence and he's far too big a price for this, especially with a strong pace to chase. He ran a great race last time finishing best from the rear and the form has worked out with Short Squeeze winning a few days ago. Also irresistible is Redvers who is back to his last win and was running a good race last time before shortening stride dramatically and he appeared not to stay, though there may have been more to it than that given he has won over that course and distance. He might not like it here, might not like going this way round but has George Baker on, who rides well here, and they've combined successfully before. A sharp 7 will suit and he's a nice price at 22/1. Goodwood 14.55 - Silent Bullet 1pt e/w Goodwood 14.55 - Redvers 1pt e/w
I'm not sure I rate the 2 year olds for the Gimcrack all that highly, not those this side of the Irish Sea anyway, and the Irish challenger looks a nice play. I know there's a Norfolk winner and Beacon could be smart but I think we've seen nothing like the best of Accepted yet and his sire did win this a few years back. He's an each way poke at 8/1, though I'm never hugely confident in this type of race. Muhaarear is interesting dropped to 6 but I can see the Irish fella running away with this, especially if finally getting a tow through a race. York 15.15 - Accepted 1pt e/w
Ebor time and there's nothing I fancy at a big price, sadly. So it's a bit boring but I'll put up Mighty Yar who looks to have been set up for this at 9/1. He'll want a test as this is the minimum for him and that looks likely. Hopefully there will not be too much rain and his form has worked out very well. The other is Wadi Al Hattawi at 12/1 who has been on the radar for a while and should stay. He's well treated, has won here, and was better than the bare result at Ascot. He's also 1 from 1 with De Sousa and I'm very excited about him. Third choice is Sir Walter Scott but he's just not big enough in the market given what we don't know about him. York 15.50 - Wadi Al Hattawi 1pt e/w York 15.50 - Mighty Yar 1pt e/w

South African sprinter Shea Shea has been retired following his unplaced run in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Friday. Shea Shea (right, blue and yellow silks) bows out behind Sole Power in Friday's Nunthorpe Stakes. The Mike de Kock-trained seven-year-old won the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan last year as well as finishing second in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Nunthorpe. Shea Shea failed to sparkle at Ascot this June and after beating only one horse home on the Knavesmire, De Kock has announced the National Emblem gelding will not race on. He told "Shea Shea won't race again, this is enough. His bleeding has become an issue and we won't persist with him any longer. He was a naturally competitive horse, a superb galloper and a consistent, high-class achiever. "Shea Shea thoroughly deserves to rest and enjoy himself without the pressures of travelling and the testing preparation programmes that go with competing so often alongside the best sprinters in the world. "We've found him a wonderful home at Mauritzfontein Stud, he will become an honourable resident of their famous paddocks. Jessica Slack and her staff will ensure he gets the kind of care he is worthy of."

Jamie Spencer chose to let his pumped-fist celebrations do the only talking after he rounded off a much-talked-about week with a winner at York's Ebor meeting. Jamie Spencer: Decision took even Redvers by surprise. To be fair to Spencer, a particularly vicious cloudburst had just reached the track and he was understandably keen to avoid a dowsing, although the speed with which he went in and out of the winner's enclosure in order to receive his rider's prize for the Roses Stakes almost matched that shown minutes earlier by his successful mount, Mind of Madness. Happily, Qatar Racing's David Redvers wasn't so worried about the rain and offered further insight into the circumstances behind Spencer's departure, announced on Thursday. Redvers said he understood the speculation over the reason's behind the jockey's decision to quit, but revealed that the 34-year-old had initiated his departure when talking to Sheikh Fahad Al-Thani at Arlington last Saturday after Just The Judge had finished third in the Beverly D Stakes. The Sheikh had then let Redvers know "there might be an issue" and things had moved quickly from that point. "He's a family man and I think he'd seen some great people retire from the weighing room whose only regret had been that they hadn't seen their families grow up," he went on. "Don't think for one minute that it's going to be a case of 'pipe and slippers' for him now, because I can promise you he'll be keeping busy. "We've now got horses in training with 54 different trainers worldwide - there can't be another operation anywhere in the world who has that sort of spread - and he will be busy riding horses for us and advising me and Sheikh Fahad. "Jamie knows his own mind and it was absolutely his decision. That's a fact. I was as surprised as anybody. He just didn't want to be in a profession any more where he didn't get to watch his kids grow up. "Might he want to come back in two or three years' time? I don't know. Maybe, but he's made his decision and we've got to respect that." The Prince, by this stage, had exited the winner's enclosure for the warmth and dryness of a hospitality suite, but he looked more like a big, smiling teddy bear in a very slightly ill-fitting suit than the the raging dictator some have hinted at, who chopped Spencer and Harry Bentley in a fit of pique caused by the disappointment of a tough season for his operation. The suggestion of a betrayal over Bentley particularly raised Redvers' ire. "I couldn't believe it when I read that Harry had had his contract terminated as that's just not true," he said. "He's a brilliant young jockey with a great pair of hands. He'll continue to ride for us and I couldn't recommend him enough to anybody else. "Sheikh Fahad became aware of the situation whereby a young jockey can lose their claim and struggle for a bit and he wanted to do something to help. Harry had a one-year contract and did very well for us and that was extended to two years and now it's come to an end, but he certainly hasn't been sacked. "He's a smashing fella with a good brain, a credit to the sport and a bloody good jockey too." As for securing a replacment to Spencers, Redvers admitted that the situation had been fraught behind the scenes. "He kept beating us!" was his initial assessment when asked why Andrea Atzeni had got the vote as Spencer's replacement. "He gave a horse of ours trained by Stuart Williams a great ride for us earlier the season but we'd always had him on the radar. Roger Varian is a good friend of mine and we had a conversation about him and things went from there. "He was just the best man for the job. "To be honest it was a bit of a nervy couple of days while Andrea decided what he wanted to do, but in the end I locked him in a room with Sheikh Fahad for half an hour and he must have done something to make up his mind." Will Spencer tell his side of the story at some stage? Redvers said: "I'm sure he will talk to you when he's ready to but he's probably still coming to terms with it all." Redvers himself looked like a man who had been through the mill this week, although this victory and a Listed-race success at the Curragh within the space of 15 minutes had put the spring back into his step. Spencer, meanwhile, stayed within the weighing room, keeping his own counsel. Less than two hours earlier, he'd been one of a number of jockeys forced to take dramatic evasive action when the saddle of Joe Doyle, riding Mantou for Michael Bell, slipped round throwing the jockey to the turf in the very final strides of the Melrose Handicap. Seeing the whites of Doyle's eyes as he lay on the turf, helpless as tonnes of thoroughbred careered towards him, may just have helped convince Spencer that he'd made the right decision. Whether he'll still feel the same way in 12 months' time when he watches another rider don the same silks and bid to win the Roses Stakes for Qatar Racing for the third consecutive year remains to be seen.

It looks like Group One assignments from now on for Malabar after her effortless victory in the Whiteley Clinic Prestige Stakes at Goodwood.
Fourth in the Albany Stakes and with an Ascot maiden victory under her belt, Mick Channon's filly was returning to Pattern level as the 13-8 favourite.
Richard Hughes, riding with incredible confidence after his last-gasp Nunthorpe victory on Friday, delivered the market leader safely into the lead close home to deprive Bonnie Grey of the spoils by a length.
"We've always thought she was pretty decent," said Channon. "It's exciting when you have one like this, as they don't come along too often. She's in the Moyglare, and she's in the Fillies' Mile.
"We'll get her home and have a think. Hughesie thinks she could go to the Breeders' Cup as she's got that turn of foot, but this was the target as I wanted to win a Group race first."
Ladbrokes St Leger entries dominated the Absolute Aesthetics March Stakes as Forever Now (4-1) scraped home ahead of Mark Johnston's 15-8 favourite Alex My Boy.
The John Gosden-trained winner had finished third in the Bahrain Trophy and made nearly all the running in this Listed event. Alex My Boy had little luck, with Joe Fanning finally trying to squeeze up the rail and finishing a short head behind, while Kings Fete plugged on for third.
Winning jockey William Buick said: "He's tough, isn't he? He stayed well, and although he's still immature, he handled the track."
Johnston said of the runner-up: "He was slowly away, again, and on top of that Joe was annoyed with himself for going up the rail. He didn't get a clear run and he'd probably be better with ease in the ground. I'd say he'll almost certainly go to Doncaster along with Hartnell."
Coral have the first two on offer at 16-1.
James Doyle exonerated himself to some extent for the ride he gave Captain Cat in the big race on Flashy Diva (4-1) in the Doom Bar Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Bronwyn Foxon, trainer Henry Candy's racing secretary, said: "She was third last time and the word from home had been good. James has given her a peach of a ride."
Ned Curtis carried out a good job on Balmoral Castle (11-2) in the Oldham Seals 50th Anniversary Handicap, while Tall Ship (3-1) sailed home in the Chichester Observer Handicap. ==========================================
Mark Johnston carried on from where he left off at the Glorious meeting as Bow Creek completed a valuable Goodwood double for the Middleham trainer in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile.
Following four wins at last month's showpiece meeting, Johnston had returned to picturesque Sussex to snaffle the £100,000 32Red Stakes with front-running Almargo.
Bow Creek (9-2) then employed similar tactics in the Group Two - but very nearly threw it away when drifting dramatically to the left and reducing his ultimate winning margin to a length and a half.
Joe Fanning, one of the most industrious members of his profession, had caught his rivals half asleep with two furlongs remaining by pinching a handy advantage, and while Bow Creek did not exactly make it easy for him in the closing stages, his jockey had matters in hand.
The colt had finished third to Wannabe Yours in a Group Three at the Glorious meeting and could have an exciting end-of-season target.
"It was a great ride and Joe is on the top of his game, but he's a good horse and I thought we came here with a decent chance," said Johnston.
"Ryan Moore said he veered left in the Britannia at Ascot. We worked our horses on the track at Ascot, so perhaps he knew where the gate was. I don't know what happened this time, but he'd have won very well if he hadn't done it.
"He's had big entries before, races like the Jacques Le Marois, we've thought about it, but he's in the QEII. Now he's won a Group Two, I suppose we'll have to go for it."
The 9-4 favourite Captain Cat made up a vast amount of ground in the final stages to eventually finish third, a neck behind Emell.
There was an honest admission from jockey James Doyle, who said: "It was a nightmare of a race and I left him too much to do."
Royston Ffrench's last properly valuable winner had been here on Sea Lord in the 2010 Betfred Mile for Johnston and in the same green colours of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
He is seizing the lifeline thrown to him, making all the running on Almargo (16-1) and being in the right place on the far rail to hold on by two lengths from Rene Mathis.
"Royston was in a bit of a rut, he had a lot of rides without winning for us but he's back on song like he was a few years ago," said Johnston. ========================================
Custom Cut won for the fourth time on the spin to give local trainer David O'Meara his first success of the week in the Betfred Play Today's £2million+ Scoop6 Strensall Stakes at York.
The ex-Irish five-year-old has taken his form to a new level this season since joining O'Meara and already had two Group Threes on his record, including one in Ireland just nine days ago.
Danny Tudhope tried to dictate matters in the straight and while Jamie Spencer challenged on the far side on Trade Storm and Paul Hanagan brought Lady Lara on the opposite flank, Custom Cut (11-2) held on by a neck.
O'Meara said: "I wouldn't mind a yard full of horses like him. That was a great ride from Danny, he judged it perfectly. I thought he was holding them at the line quite comfortably.
"He might get 10 (furlongs), I've never thought about it. He'll go for the Joel Stakes at Newmarket next probably, and then France, either the Foret or the Prix Daniel Wildenstein depending on the ground - he prefers it soft."
Online Alexander is set for a trip to the Curragh after her length and a quarter victory over stablemate Lexington Abbey in the Qipco Future Stars Apprentice Handicap.
The 5-1 winner is likely to go for the Flying Five on Irish Champions Weekend, according to trainer Kevin Ryan, while the runner-up could be the type for next year's Ayr Gold Cup.
Ryan said of the Kevin Stott-ridden Online Alexander: "She's an improving filly and we always thought she was stakes class."
Jamie Spencer ended a turbulent week in which he announced he is quitting the saddle at the end of the season with a last-gasp victory on David Brown's Mind Of Madness in the Julia Graves Roses Stakes.
Second in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, he had disappointed last time out but was given a typically patient ride.
Al Fareej and Moonraker were at the head of affairs, but Mind Of Madness (4-1) quickened up smartly and while the winning distance was only a nose, Spencer waved his whip with delight.
"That meant a lot," said David Redvers, racing manager to the owner, Qatar boss Sheikh Fahad.
"It's been a long week and we've had a few seconds. This boy has been on the go a long time, so it's a great training performance. We might look at the Flying Childers now." =====================================
A dramatic renewal of the Betfred Melrose Stakes at York saw Joe Doyle unshipped in the shadow of the post as the famous old handicap went the way of Vent De Force.
The young rider found himself hanging on to his mount Mantou's neck in a desperate attempt to maintain the partnership beyond the line, but close-up images showed his foot had brushed the ground seconds before the post came and he was not given fourth place.
Moments afterwards he hit the ground in what was a horrible incident, but thankfully was soon up on his feet although looking shaken.
A stewards' inquiry was quickly called, but the placings remained unaltered.
Doyle said: "The horse was running a really nice race and would definitely have been in the four, but these things happen.
"About half a furlong out I felt it (the saddle) going back a bit. I thought it would be OK but just before the line it was gone and I didn't stand much of a chance beyond that. I knew I was close to the line and I was trying to hang on, but gravity took over then.
"That's my first fall as a professional on the Flat, it was scary and hopefully I won't have too many more of them!"
Vent De Force came from the clouds to win the race for Hughie Morrison.
Having disappointed in the Bahrain Trophy he was sent off relatively unconsidered at 16-1 under Richard Kingscote, but beat Adventure Seeker by three-quarters of a length, with Connecticut another half length away.
"I blamed myself for running him the last day," said Morrison. "We nearly didn't run him on the ground, so it's a pleasant surprise. He's in the Cesarewitch, but he'd need a two-stone penalty for that." ==========================================
Muhaarar lunged late to take a thrilling Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes at York.
Mark Johnston's Jungle Cat made a valiant bid to make all in the historic Group Two and Silvestre de Sousa was in no mood to be passed as the challengers loomed.
As Jungle Cat was joined by Muhaarar (7-1) on one side and Ahlan Emarati on the other, it looked like he might be swallowed up, but it was only in the last stride that Paul Hanagan's mount put his head in front.
A nose was the official winning margin for the Charlie Hills-trained son of Oasis Dream.
Royal Ascot winner Baitha Alga was a disappointment as the writing was on the wall for him from some way out.
Hanagan said: "He knuckled down well, he really put his head down for me and is really genuine.
"I thought it was a really good run last time (third to Kodi Bear at Ascot), and Charlie was very confident coming into the race.
"It's good to get a winner. I had my heart broken on Thursday (with Taghrooda), but as long as she is safe and sound that's the main thing."
Hanagan also has the highly regarded pair Estidkhaar and Faydhan to look forward to among his juvenile rides for the rest of this year, and he added: "This lad would be right up there with them."
Hills said: "This is our third winner of the week, so it's been good. He's always shown potential and we tried to stretch him over seven furlongs last time. He's growing up now. He's in all the top-class races and I think the Middle Park will be his primary aim."
Charlie Johnston, assistant to his father, said of Jungle Cat: "I'm gutted for him, he's been to all the big meetings and been placed at them all and just got touched off today.
"He's been softened up by the others and then caught on the line. We can't be disappointed. He's in the Mill Reef and Middle Park and will run in one or the other or maybe both."
Frankie Dettori, rider of the unplaced favourite Baitha Alga, said: "He was sweating before the race and was too fresh. He wasn't himself today. He also put his foot in a hole."
Hanagan also won the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House on William Haggas's Queensberry Rules (8-1) and said: "I always felt I was getting there but when I did he thought he'd done enough." ======================================
Mutual Regard completed a clean sweep for Ireland in the four major races at York by winning the Betfred Ebor to prove beyond all doubt that Johnny Murtagh is going to be as big a force in the training ranks as he was in the saddle.
After wins for Australia, Tapestry and Sole Power in the three Group Ones preceding the final day on the Knavesmire, Mutual Regard was sent off an unconsidered 20-1 chance in the hands of 5lb claiming jockey Louis Steward, 19.
The rider could be spotted moving strongly down the straight and after easing to the front inside the two-furlong marker, he had enough in the tank to win a battle with Van Percy by a length and a quarter.
Elidor was third and the heavily backed 9-2 favourite Pallasator ran a big race to be fourth from his wide draw in stall 22, which meant he had to be dropped in almost last on leaving the gates.
Pallasator had garnered all headlines pre-race as he is trained by handicap king Sir Mark Prescott and had been bought by the powerful Qatar Racing team.
To rub salt into the wounds for Prescott, he sold Mutual Regard in October for 60,000 guineas to Andrew Tinkler.
"I never won this race as a jockey, but I was second a few times," said Murtagh.
"This lad had been going well at home. He got put up 11lb for winning first time out and I ran him in a Group Three last time and he ran a nice race behind Pale Mimosa (who won the Lonsdale Cup on Friday).
"I thought a fast pace and one-mile-six would suit him, and Louis gave him a lovely ride.
"I wanted Ross Coakley to ride, but he's suspended - Andrew looked at the stats and said this lad (Steward) is red hot.
"He's a Moyglare Stud-bred and they get better as they get older. He's in a really happy place at the minute. Ascot might be on his agenda now, but we'll see about the Melbourne Cup as he loves fast ground."
Steward said: "He fought all the way to the line and made my job a lot easier in the end. I'm so pleased."
RaceBets gave the winner a 20-1 quote for the Australian showpiece. =====================================
Al Kazeem returned to winning ways in the 188Bet Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor.
Sent off the 8-11 favourite for this Group Three assignment, he was settled nicely by George Baker as Complicit raced very keenly at the head of affairs under Chris Catlin, but the field bunched as the pace slowed markedly around half a mile out.
True Story joined issue at the head of affairs with two furlongs to run and as Baker got to work on the market leader in covering the move, the front two settled down to fight it out from the furlong pole. Roger Charlton's runner prevailed by half a length, conceding 8lb to the runner-up.
Al Kazeem, three times a Group One winner last season, returned to the racecourse after proving sub-fertile at stud and made his long-awaited comeback in a Listed race at Newbury last month. He finished a close fourth to Amralah, who has gone on to win since.
Charlton told At The Races: "It was a relief, I have to admit. When you have a horse who has been as good as him it would have been disappointing to see a horse beaten twice in lesser races, if you like.
"His owner has been incredibly patient and it has been a long haul back.
"But he's such a willing, happy horse. George said he was always going to win. He was just doing enough to win and he said he felt brilliant, that he moved brilliant. He winged round the bend like a motor bike.
"Where we go, how high he gets, I don't know really. I'd say that's a few lengths up on what he achieved at Newbury and we need to find that again to feature in the better races. We'll have to look at the programme book a bit.
"I don't think Leopardstown (Irish Champion Stakes) last year really suited the horse, no disrespect to The Fugue, who beat us fair and square.
"I would be pretty certain that unless the owner says we are going to the Irish Champion Stakes that he will avoid that, and we'll see what comes up. Ascot is a great track and the Qipco Champion is a fantastic race, that could be his target. We'll see what Mr (John) Deer wants to do." =========================================
Jamie Spencer could possibly return to the saddle in the next few years, Qatar racing manager David Redvers has suggested.
Classic-winning rider Spencer, 34, stunned the racing world on Thursday when announcing he would retire at the end of the season, when he will take up a management role in Sheikh Fahad's powerful operation.
Redvers, revealing he was as "surprised as anyone" at Spencer's announcement, said: "It was absolutely Jamie's decision to call it a day.
"His reasoning was he didn't want to be one of those dads who didn't see their kids grow up and the life of a jockey is hard, they are always on the road.
"In time I'm sure Jamie will give his reasons, but I was as surprised as anyone."
He went on: "I'm delighted that I get to continue working with him as it is a pleasure.
"Don't for one minute think he will be sitting with his pipe and slippers, though.
"There is plenty for him to do, the admin for an operation the size of ours is enormous and we already have a very good team sorting that.
"There will be something for him to do all the time and I'm looking forward to continuing our association.
"Maybe, in two or three years time he might want to make a comeback if he misses it, who knows."
Andrea Atzeni will take on the role of Qatar number one from January 2015, supported by Oisin Murphy. ============================================
James Fanshawe has picked an interesting option for Ribbons as she makes her first appearance of the summer in today's Group One Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville.
The chestnut is an important member of the Elite Racing Club, as she was bred by the team and is out of Sister Act, the sister of Elite's great racemare Soviet Song.
Ribbons looked a chip off the old block when landing her first four starts, but she has been restricted by the dry weather, finishing second in a Kempton Listed race and an Ascot handicap in the spring on her two starts this year.
Elite's Dan Downie said: "She has been ready to go for a while, she hasn't had a hold-up or anything, we've just had a long wait to get her ground.
"She's been working well, but it's a big step up to a Group One and it's her first time racing abroad.
"James isn't stupid, and he came up with this race. You could have run into a proper race, and this is probably not the strongest Group One. Let's hope she can run well."
Alain de Royer-Dupre's Narniyn, who finished second to Sultanina in the Nassau Stakes, looks a serious rival for Ribbons.
Last year's Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture makes the journey from Britain after filling the same place in the York Stakes, while Princess Loulou represents Roger Varian and Euphrasia travels from Ireland. ==========================================
Two Royal Ascot stars from opposite sides of the Atlantic clash in the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville today.
Neither John Quinn's The Wow Signal nor the Wesley Ward-trained Hootenanny have appeared since June, with the former having been briefly sidetracked following his Coventry Stakes victory.
Ward had been planning to take Hootenanny to this week's Gimcrack Stakes but the logistics of travel meant France would be an easier journey for the juvenile than York.
This could be a second consecutive Morny for the American trainer following No Nay Never's success 12 months ago.
After Hootenanny, who has the same Coolmore connection, blitzed his rivals in the Windsor Castle Stakes, Ward wondered whether he should have instead taken on The Wow Signal at Ascot.
"I think mine is a pretty quality colt, but we went for the Windsor Castle stakes because he was beaten in his previous run on the dirt. I was disappointed with him that day because I think so highly of him," he said.
He's doing well, and I think even if the track gets a little wet, it will suit him."
The Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh had been the target for The Wow Signal but Harry Herbert, advisor to owner Al Shaqab Racing, said: "It was infuriating to miss the Phoenix as he was in great form but literally just had a couple of coughs and his blood was slighty off, which was agony for John Quinn and everybody.
"He's back firing on all cylinders now and we're hopeful he'll run a big race.
"I think he'll get seven, he's out of a High Chaparral mare, so ultimately we'll be looking at the Dewhurst, something like that. He's very good, a slightly forgotten horse, really, as he's disappeared since the Coventry."
The remaining seven runners are trained on the continent, with the Aga Khan's filly Ervedya looking a very bright prospect when taking her unbeaten record to three in the Prix de Cabourg, a traditional trial over course and distance at the start of the month.
Group Three winner Goken was not far behind Richard Hannon's Kool Kompany in the Prix Robert Papin, while Quevedo represents Spain.

17:05 Sunday 24th August Racing Tips - 24/08/2014
The Group 3 at Goodwood should go to Muteela who looks a to have a lovely chance to dictate here. She's up against the boys though and, as a bet, I prefer Horsted Keynes who has disappointed on his last 2 runs but it's interesting that connections are keen to come back here after last time. He drops in trip and has a hood on and, while he needs a big step up, he's better than we've seen of late. Had he won at Ascot, which he very nearly did, he'd not look out of place in this company and wouldn't be 9/1. Goodwood 16.15 - Horsted Keynes 1pt e/w
There's a really good nursery on the Beverley card and Chances Are may just be a cut above these. She won with plenty in hand at Thirsk and showed blistering pace whilst seeing the trip out well. She will need to be strong at the finish here as there's a lot of pace on but she looks to have the stamina edge on her front running rivals, and the class edge too. The form of her debut would see a rating of 80+ not look out of place so she's well treated off 75 at 11/4. Beverley 16.00 - Chances Are 2pt win
Another Johnston runner is drawn 1 tomorrow with Joe Fanning on top and Right Of Appeal must have a chance at Beverley. However, his form is dodgy and he's short enough. Hopefully Dabuki will take him on for the lead as that could set this up for a closer. That may be Maybeme who won this race 2 year ago off 16lb lower. She's run in it both years since but not had the test required on ground a touch quicker than ideal. A bit of cut wouldn't go amiss and she's well weighted dropping in class given a win off 1lb lower in June in better company. Megan Carberry takes off 7 and 13/2 looks worth a play. Beverley 17.05 - Maybeme 1pt e/w

2yo Non-Handicaps at Goodwood have been profitable for favourites (£22.81) over the last five seasons =====================================
John Quinn, trainer: THE WOW SIGNAL " “We thought he was a smart from day one. The form of the Coventry has worked out and he won it well so we're very happy with him. I don't think any horse would want it really heavy but he's coped with soft ground. Hootenanny won very well and could only beat what was put in front him so I have a lot of respect for him.” " The Wow Signal 2:40 Deauville =======================================
