19:25 Thursday 7th August Racing Tips - 07/08/2014
Whipper Snapper was to go up for the 7 furlong handicap at Sandown, with Subtle Knife and Voyageofdiscovery next best at the prices. William Knight's gelding has since been withdrawn and, as a result, the favourite is on the short side and so Giles Bravery's mare gets the vote at 12/1. That's not to say she's not a half confident selection at that price if she gets the gallop needed. She ran really well behind a good pace in better company than this at York and if something takes on Bravo Echo for the lead, namely Take A Noe or the favourite, the selection will be seen to good effect on this stiff track. She's never outsider of the field. Sandown 18.15 - Subtle Knife 1pt e/w
A good 10 furlong handicap sees a likeable favourite in the form of Prince Of Stars but there have to be ground worries given the forecast. He was withdrawn due to good to firm ground last month here and may want an easier surface than likely here. Mythical Madness could be well treated but this is tougher than his modest maiden last time out. The one we know is well treated is Hoop Of Colour at 4/1 for a yard that won this 4 years ago. She is up against the boys for the first time but won with plenty in hand last time in a race not run to suit. Dropping back in trip is probably a plus given the way she defied no pace last time over a mile and a half and just a 6lb rise is within her. Fire Fighting is interesting from the front should Automated sit back and Hedge End looks a solid place bet. Sandown 19.25 - Hoop Of Colour 2pt win

Michael Byrne & Neil Mulholland - Rule (B)59.2 & (C)45
Disciplinary Panel - Referrals from Racecourse
UTTOXETER SECOND JULY MEETING 2014
32Red Casino Novices’ Hurdle Race
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 7 August 2014 held an enquiry to consider whether or not Michael Byrne, a licensed jockey, had committed a breach of Rule (B)59.2 of the Rules of Racing, and whether or not Neil Mulholland, a licensed trainer, had committed a breach of Rule (C)45, concerning the running and riding of BARTON ANTIX in the 32 Red Casino Novices’ Hurdle Race at Uttoxeter on 16 July 2014. The matter was referred by the Uttoxeter Stewards following an enquiry on the same day.
The Panel considered evidence from Byrne and Mulholland, who were legally represented. It also viewed recordings of the race.
The Panel found that no breach of the Rules of Racing had occurred. ===================================
DEFENCE COUNCIL (IRE) - Ollie Pears - Unruly horse

CATTERICK BRIDGE THIRD JULY MEETING 2014
The Yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk Selling Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) held an enquiry on 7 August 2014 into a report that DEFENCE COUNCIL (IRE), trained by Ollie Pears, had refused to race in the Yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk Selling Stakes at Catterick Bridge on 16 July 2014. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Catterick Stewards following their enquiry of the same day. This was the gelding’s first start since the Disciplinary Panel had directed on 25 April 2014 that if the gelding refused or was reluctant to start in any of its next three races under the Rules of Racing the matter would be referred back to the BHA.
Having considered the evidence, including correspondence from Pears stating that the gelding had been rehomed as a riding horse, the Panel declared that with immediate effect under Rule (F)66, no further entries would be accepted for DEFENCE COUNCIL (IRE) for races run under the Rules of Racing. =======================================
Adam Kirby - Whip referral
Disciplinary Panel - Referrals from Racecourse
GOODWOOD JULY MEETING 2014
The bet365 Lennox Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 7 August 2014 held an enquiry to establish whether or not Adam Kirby, the rider of the winner ES QUE LOVE (IRE), had committed a breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 of the Rules of Racing concerning his use of the whip when riding in the bet 365 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood on 29 July 2014. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Goodwood Stewards following an enquiry on the same day because this was Kirby’s fifth offence of mis-use of the whip, warranting a suspension of between 2 to 6 days, in the last 6 months.
The Panel heard submissions from Kirby’s legally representative, and viewed video recordings of the race.
The Panel accepted Kirby’s admission that he was guilty of misuse of the whip in that he had used his whip in the incorrect place. It considered that the breach would have warranted a suspension of 4 days.
Taking into account that Kirby:
i) had committed five whip breaches (3 x 2 days and 2 x 4 days), since 27 February 2014; and
ii) had had 522 rides over this period
it suspended him from riding for 19 days, of which 6 days will be deferred for 6 weeks months until Wednesday 8 October 2014. The suspension will run from Friday 15 August 2014 until Wednesday 27 August 2014 inclusive.
In deciding on the length of suspension the Panel considered the number of rides and the period of time during which the suspensions had occurred. It also took into account that Kirby had previously been referred to the Panel for mis-use of the whip within the previous 12 months.

Irish trainer Michael O'Callaghan has confirmed Fergal Lynch will ride his intended runner at Ayr, should the jockey return to British racing on Monday.
The jockey, 36, admitted to stopping a horse, Bond City, from winning at Ripon in August 2004, supplying inside information about six of his rides, and associating with the disqualified Miles Rodgers.
Lynch must firstly participate in a British Horseracing Authority integrity education video, after which his proposed comeback will be earmarked at the Scottish circuit.
O'Callaghan has made two entries at the Scottish track, but only plans to run Mr Bounty in the Danny Tyson Handicap.
The County Kildare handler said: "I won't run the two-year-old (Blue Fragrance), but, all being well, Mr Bounty will run as I want to help Fergal out.
"Fergal has been very good to me, he's been very loyal since I started training and I'm a loyal person myself.
"I have a great relationship with him. He rides out for me in a morning and rides work and we've never had a crossed word.
"I've had 13 winners so far and Fergal will have ridden the majority of them.
"He was very young when all that happened years ago and I firmly believe everyone deserves a second chance.
"The horse (Mr Bounty) bolted up the last time he went to England (at Kempton).
"There aren't many opportunities for him in Ireland with the way the race bandings work and the race in Ayr is more his grade, so hopefully he'd have a chance."
The former champion apprentice was fined £50,000 in July 2009 and agreed not to ride in Britain for at least a year as part of a plea bargain agreement with the BHA.
He has, however, been free to ride in Ireland after he was granted a licence by the Irish Turf Club in April 2012.
He has been granted permission to ride in Britain under BHA rules as an overseas jockey, initially for a probationary period.
Lynch's agent, Ruaidhri Tierney, hopes he can secure more rides for his client on the same card.
Tierney said: "Hopefully he'll ride for Michael O'Callaghan and we've had plenty of enquiries.
"It would be nice to think he might get on one or two horses for English-based trainers as well, but we'll see.
"In all likelihood it looks like Fergal will be riding in Ayr on Monday and I know he is looking forward to returning to British racing." ======================================
John Murphy believes this week's Naas runner-up Compass Hill could be one of several Group-class two-year-olds residing at his County Cork stable.
The American-bred chestnut made his introduction in the Frank Kenny Race on Monday afternoon and finished second to Jim Bolger's potential Cheveley Park Stakes runner Lucida.
Murphy said: "I was disappointed he got beaten, but Jim Bolger assures me his is very good.
"I think we'll find another maiden but ultimately the plan is the Dewhurst Stakes. I think he'll get a mile in time."
Murphy also has high hopes for Acclamation colt Seaforth, who was third to the Aidan O'Brien-trained Jamaica in a maiden at Galway last week.
"He's another nice horse, again we'd like to find another maiden and then look at something like the Dewhurst or the Racing Post Trophy," the trainer said.
"We've a really nice bunch this year. As the ground has been unusually quick in Ireland this summer, we've looked after them." =======================================
Trainer John McConnell has already earmarked next summer's Galway Hurdle as a potential long-term target for Orgilgo Bay following his excellent run in defeat at Ballybrit last week.
Placed in the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring, the four-year-old looked likely to emerge victorious in the Guinness Handicap Hurdle, but was mowed down late by Maxim Gorky.
McConnell was pleased with how his charge performed in defeat and is confident there are plenty of good days ahead.
"We were delighted with how he ran. It's hard to be disappointed when they get so close to winning," said the trainer.
"When I walked the course the day after, on the Saturday, I was amazed how uphill it is from the bend to the line and I could understand how he got beaten.
"Things just conspired against him with the rain coming and then he got taken on up front by a couple of horses. They probably cut their own throats to a certain extent.
"The two who took him on finished out with the washing, so he did well to keep going as well as he did.
"There are lots of possibilities for him going forward. We might go back on the Flat with him or there is a four-year-old only hurdle in Listowel in September.
"It would be nice to think next year he could be going for a big handicap like the County Hurdle in Cheltenham next March or the Galway Hurdle in a year's time ." =======================================
Adam Kirby has been handed a 19-day ban, six of which will be deferred for six weeks, for his winning ride on Es Que Love at Goodwood last week.
Kirby was before the disciplinary panel of the British Horseracing Authority as the offence was his fifth in a six-month period.
He was found to have used his whip in an incorrect place and that the offence would have warranted a four-day ban.
Given he had five whip breaches since February 27 and that he had had 522 rides in this period, he was handed the 19-day ban, with six deferred until October 8.
The suspension will run from August 15-27 inclusive, meaning he will be absent from the Ebor meeting at York. =====================================
Fashionable apprentice Cam Hardie helped the frosts4cars.co.uk Brighton Challenge Cup remain in local hands by guiding Lady Herries' Barwick to success.
It is only 20 miles from the course to the trainer's historic establishment at Angmering Park near Littlehampton, a stable best known in recent years for housing the exceptional juvenile Celtic Swing.
Lady Herries, who is now 76, is rarely seen racing nowadays and Barwick carries the colours of the late Julian Wilson's company Seymour Bloodstock, which has been continued by some of his associates who received the giant perpetual cup.
Hardie had finished a slightly unlucky third on the 10-1 chance at Lingfield last time and put things right by coming with a sweeping run to score by three-quarters of a length.
Long-time leader and 5-4 favourite Notarised could only finish fourth.
"He was slowly away and I thought I might be in trouble, but a lot of them were late moving in to the rail and I got a lovely position," said Hardie.
"I had a bad draw at Lingfield last time and I had to use up a lot of gas early, but he still ran well. He quickened away today and was very generous when he hit the front."
Hardie, who is based with Richard Hannon, has been flying high and won the Stewards' Cup consolation race last weekend aboard the Dandy Nicholls-trained Barnet Fair.
"That's 32 winners now, I don't think there'll be too many more as I don't really want to reach 50 and start next season without my 5lb claim," he said.
The track's big afternoon of the year has a far more informal feel to the rarefied air of last week's meeting a few miles along the Sussex coast at Goodwood.
Almost toppling from the South Downs into the town below and immortalised by the book Brighton Rock, it still draws an eclectic mixture of tourists and enthusiasts who were on hand to witness course specialist Who's That Chick (7-2) triumph in the Over 300 Used Cars At Frosts Fillies' Handicap.
Andrea Atzeni was given a two-day ban (August 23-24) for failing to ride out Ejadah to potentially have finished fourth.
Richard Hughes had a four-timer on the first afternoon of the August Festival and he carried on where he left at in the opening choicebet.net Money Back Short Head Losers Handicap when 9-4 favourite Ada Lovelace scooted away.
The winner is cleverly named by owner-breeder Donald Clark as the filly's sire is Byron, and Ada Lovelace was the poet Lord Byron's daughter.
Trainer John Gallagher said: "I expected her to win as she was in great form, but I didn't think she'd win as well as that.
"She does get herself very worked up but I thought the five and a half furlongs here would suit."
Clapperboard (6-1) is a hard filly to catch from the front and she did the business in the Howard Education Limited Selling Handicap.
Trainer Paul Fitzsimons had to go to 8,900 guineas to keep her at the auction.
"She's brave," said the Lambourn trainer. "I think I'll give her a break and bring her back for another all-weather campaign now."
Sylvester Kirk is having a good summer and there was another winner for the Lambourn trainer in the TM Lewin Shirts, Suits And More Maiden Auction Stakes.
Percy Veer did not look an obvious candidate based on his Salisbury debut but he had evidently made a step forward at 16-1 as he wore down Arthur's Way and prevailed by half a length over the staying-on Diamond Runner.
Owner Malcolm Crow said: "As the jockey (Silvestre De Sousa) thinks he's still immature, I would think we'll probably put him away now and give him time to grow."
Emman Bee (9-2) took one of her last steps before retirement by winning the Harringtons Lettings Handicap.
Trainer Luke Dace said: "I'm thrilled because she's won every year now and ran well the other day at Newbury. She's in foal to Foxwedge so I'd imagine she'd just have one more run."
Serena Brotherton steered home a rare Brighton runner for Mick Easterby, City Ground (5-2) in the frosts4cars.co.uk On Your Mobile Lady Amateur Riders' Handicap. ======================================
Tim Pitt believes the return to a fast-run five furlongs is an advantage to Sir Maximilian in the Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes at Tipperary on Friday.
The speedy five-year-old was an impressive winner of the valuable Rockingham Handicap on his last visit to Ireland last month.
Last weekend he finished a perfectly respectable seventh in the 32Red Cup at Goodwood, a performance Pitt rated as the best of his life, but the Shropshire trainer expects him to be even better suited by a return to the minimum trip.
"The formbook tells us he's best over five furlongs but he does stays six," said Pitt.
"I just think a fast-run five plays to his strengths.
"We had a look in the programme book for races at home for him and there wasn't much, he'd have been coming up against the Group One horses with his rating as it is now.
"This option was there for us. I know it comes quite quick, but he came out of Goodwood very well and I thought that was a career-best run, even though he finished seventh.
"He was only beaten just over three lengths and all the right horses were around him like Muthmir and Discussiontofollow."
The other British-based raider is John Butler's filly, One Chance, trained by Pitt last year when she showed smart form as a two-year-old.
"She is a fast filly, so hopefully we'll get the fast-run race that we need," said Pitt
"The lads assure me that Tipperary is one of the fastest five's in Ireland."
Russian Soul, Jamesie and Abstraction also feature in the nine-runner field. ========================================

Potential British raiders Integral and Rizeena are among 38 fillies and mares in contention for the Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 13.
The 300,000 euro Group One contest takes places on the first day of the inaugural Irish Champions Weekend and a strong field looks in prospect.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Integral claimed Group One glory in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last month and could be set for a fascinating rematch with Clive Brittain's runner-up Rizeena, who won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Johnny Murtagh had a great record in the race as a jockey, winning it on Timarida, Soviet Song and Lillie Langtry and his Purr Along is the leading Irish-trained possible.
Dermot Weld's Balansiya is lightly raced and is an interesting entry while Darley Irish Oaks runner-up Tapestry heads the Aidan O'Brien challenge.
The Clipper Logistics Boomerang Stakes has attracted an impressive entry of 40 and the Dermot Weld-trained Mustajeeb, the Jersey Stakes winner at Royal Ascot, looks a strong contender.
The well-travelled Gordon Lord Byron, Ansgar, Darwin and Parish Hall are others that catch the eye, along with Richard Hannon's Toormore.
The initial entries for the Group Three KPMG Enterprise Stakes include the unbeaten Letro, trained in Germany by Waldemar Hickst.
The home team looks particularly strong and the inclusion of Free Eagle, trained by Weld, is of particular interest. Weld has also put Fascinating Rock in the race.
The Curragh takes centre stage the follow day and the entries for the Vincent O'Brien National Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes remain strong.
Beach Belle, Lucida and Words are among 52 fillies in the Moyglare, with the Roger Varian-trained Cursory Glance one of the more interesting British contenders.
Aidan O'Brien's Goodwood scorer Highland Reel is in contention for the National Stakes, along with Jim Bolger's Hall Of Fame and Kevin Ryan's Flaming Spear.
Sole Power is the stand out entry in the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes, while the Blandford Stakes could see the return to action of last season's Darley Irish Oaks winner Chicquita, now trained by O'Brien.
Leopardstown chief executive Pat Keogh said: "The quality of entries reflects the standing that these races have and it is all looking good for the inaugural Irish Champions Weekend."
Paul Hensey, general manager of the Curragh, added: "There is huge anticipation and excitement building for Irish Champions Weekend.
"We are delighted with the high-class entries for our major races and they highlight the added prestige of being part of such a great event.
"The significant increases in prize-money has ensured that many of the world's top trainers and owners are fully supportive of the weekend." ========================================
Sylvester Kirk is weighing up his options for Newbury juvenile maiden winners Sleepy Dust and Carry On Deryck.
Rip Van Winkle filly Sleepy Dust made an impressive racecourse debut at the Berkshire circuit at the end of May and was under consideration for this weekend's Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket, but Kirk has decided to take an easier route.
Carry On Deryck, a son of Halling, also made a winning start to his career at the same track last weekend and Kirk is pleased to be back among the two-year-old winners following a couple of lean years.
"For the last couple of years we've been a bit quiet with the two-year-olds. Whether they've not been right or just haven't been good enough is open to conjecture, but we have done pretty well with them in the past so it's nice to show people we can still do it," said the trainer.
"We looked at the race on Saturday for Sleepy Dust, but the handicapper has given us a mark of 79 and that's probably a bit away from chasing black type at this stage.
"She ideally wants slower ground as well, so I think we can probably find something a bit easier than the race on Saturday. With a mark of 79, we should be able to find her a nursery somewhere on good ground."
Kirk was pleased with Carry On Deryck's recent triumph, particularly as his demeanour and breeding suggest he is only going to improve with time.
Kirk said: "He was as green as grass, so for him to go and win first time out despite needing the run was very encouraging.
"He's got a nice pedigree and being by Halling, you would imagine he's going to be a better with a bit of time.
"What the form is worth, I don't know. It's always hard to tell when they finish in a heap, but the fact is he's going to improve a lot for it.
"You'd like to think he could be up to getting a bit of black type, but we'll see how we go and how the handicapper rates him.
"He's owned by Dai Walters, so if there's a novice race or something at his track (Ffos Las) it might be good to go there with him, or he might get let into a nursery." ======================================
Inchila, an unlucky fourth in the Investec Oaks for Peter Chapple-Hyam, has been put down after suffering complications from an injury she sustained in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Owned and bred by Woodcote Stud, the daughter of Dylan Thomas fractured her pelvis at Ascot but the initial diagnosis was good and connections had hoped to see her back on the track next year.
However, on further examination the injury was worse than first feared and the difficult decision was taken last week.
Barry Reilly, owner of Woodcote Stud, told Press Association Sport: "It's not good news. She had been doing well but the original injury was worse than we first thought.
"We they examined her further, which they weren't able to do for several weeks, and they found that she had a fracture right down into her hip joint.
"Last Friday we made the decision that the best thing for her was to put to sleep.
"The vets originally said she'd make a full recovery and we just wanted her back on the farm for her babies, really.
"She was going the right way but the trauma down that left side took its toll.
"She was up for five weeks and I was seeing her twice a week but I think partly exhaustion got the better of her.
"They took her down, under supervision, but when they got her back up her leg wouldn't bend.
"It's really sad and she would be a big loss to anybody, never mind a farm as big as ours.
"Pete was convinced she'd be much stronger next year but the worst-case scenario we thought was that we could breed from her.
"Simon Knapp (vet) and his team did a great job, but there was no other decision we could have made, the muscle wastage was very bad as she was immobile.
"I feel very sorry for Pete as he's just lost Rodrigo De Triano as well, things like this hit you hard."

Race 5 - 4:10pm THE ZIP GOES A MILLION HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of SUPERSTA, ridden by Chris Catlin and trained by Ronald Harris, which appeared to be tenderly handled in the closing stages to finish sixth, beaten 5 ¾ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated his instructions were to jump off as well as possible and try to keep a horse on either side in the early stages. As the gelding jumped off slowly he was unable to get the position he wanted. He also observed that he felt the saddle might have been slipping underneath him which made it harder for him to ride out more vigorously. The trainer confirmed the instructions and added that SUPERSTA has suffered muscle problems and therefore it takes time to warm him up in his races. He also stated that a gel pad was used under the saddle which may have caused Chris Catlin to feel unbalanced. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations. They ordered SUPERSTA to be routine tested.
Race 6 - 4:40pm THE RACINGUK iPAD APP racinguk.com/mobile HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) Louis Steward, the rider of CAPTAIN KENDALL (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding moved poorly throughout. A post-race examination by the Veterinary Officer found the gelding to be lame on his left and right foreleg.
The Stewards considered the running of HAB REEH, ridden by Graham Lee and trained by Ruth Carr, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer's representative could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance. They ordered HAB REEH to be routine tested.

Race 1 - 2:20pm THE choicebet.net MONEY BACK SHORT HEAD LOSERS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) George Baker, the rider of STORM LIGHTNING, placed third, reported that the gelding did not handle coming down the hill.
Race 2 - 2:50pm THE HOWARD EDUCATION LTD SELLING HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) The Stewards noted that ACTIONETAKETWO, unplaced, had interfered with ISHI HONEST, unplaced, which then interfered with VIKING WARRIOR (IRE), placed fourth, in the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
Oisin Murphy, the rider of VIKING WARRIOR (IRE), placed fourth, reported that the gelding was denied a clear run, and hung left.
Silvestre De Sousa, the rider of ISHI HONEST, unplaced, reported that the filly suffered interference in running.
Race 3 - 3:20pm THE TM LEWIN SHIRTS, SUITS AND MORE MAIDEN AUCTION STAKES (CLASS 5) Richard Hughes, the rider of HAWKMEISTER (IRE), unplaced, reported that the colt was never travelling. The Stewards ordered HAWKMEISTER (IRE) to be routine tested.
Race 4 - 3:50pm THE frosts4cars.co.uk BRIGHTON CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (CLASS 4) The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Michael J M Murphy, the rider of ECHO BRAVA, placed third, from approximately two furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Murphy for 2 days as follows: Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August 2014.
Richard Hughes, the rider of THE HOLYMAN (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding lost its action.
Race 5 - 4:20pm THE OVER 300 USED CARS AT FROSTS FILLIES' HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Andrea Atzeni, the rider of EJADAH (IRE), unplaced, had appeared to stop riding shortly before the winning post. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found him in breach of Rule (B)59.4 and guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing in that he failed to ride out on a horse that could have finished fourth. They suspended him for 2 days as follows Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August 2014.
Andrea Atzeni, the rider of EJADAH (IRE), unplaced, reported that the filly ran too free.
Race 6 - 4:50pm THE HARRINGTONS LETTINGS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) Ryan Powell, the rider of NOT RIGG (USA), unplaced, reported that his saddle slipped.
John Butler, the trainer of HEJAZ (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding was unsuited by the track. The Stewards ordered HEJAZ (IRE) to be routine tested.
Race 7 - 5:20pm THE frosts4cars.co.uk ON YOUR MOBILE LADY AMATEUR RIDERS' HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) Miss Joanna Mason, the rider of CROUCHING HARRY (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding became unbalanced on the loose ground.

Race 1 - 5:25pm THE PERCY HEDLEY ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) The Stewards noted that the winner, DIDDY ERIC, had interfered with VALE MENTOR (IRE), approximately one and a half furlongs out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved DIDDY ERIC’s placing.
Gemma Tutty, the rider of TORTOISE, placed second, reported that her saddle slipped in the early stages.
Kieran Shoemark, the rider of SILVER TIGRESS, unplaced, reported that the mare was denied a clear run.
Rachel Richardson, the rider of VALE MENTOR (IRE), unplaced, reported that the colt suffered interference in the straight.
Race 3 - 6:35pm THE NORTHUMBRIAN WATER MEDIAN AUCTION MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 6) The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Connor Beasley, the rider of GET KNOTTED (IRE), shortly after the start. They interviewed the rider and having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by GET KNOTTED (IRE) ducking left. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved the Stewards took no further action.
Race 5 - 7:45pm THE PUNTER SOUTHALL FOR PENSIONS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference approaching the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, BIG STORM COMING, ridden by Paul Pickard, had hung left, carrying NO QUARTER (IRE), placed third, ridden by Royston Ffrench, off his intended line. NO QUARTER (IRE) then in turn interfered with TIGER JIM, placed fourth, ridden by Gary Bartley. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved NO QUARTER (IRE)’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.

Potential British raiders Integral and Rizeena are among 38 fillies and mares in contention for the Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 13. Rizeena: Could run in the Matron Stakes. The €300,000 Group One contest takes places on the first day of the inaugural Irish Champions Weekend and a strong field looks in prospect. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Integral claimed Group One glory in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket next month and could be set for a fascinating rematch with Clive Brittain's runner-up Rizeena, who won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Johnny Murtagh had a great record in the race as a jockey, winning it on Timarida, Soviet Song and Lillie Langtry and his Purr Along is one of the leading Irish-trained possibles. Leopardstown chief executive Pat Keogh said: "The quality of entries reflects the standing that these races have and it is all looking good for the inaugural Irish Champions Weekend." Paul Hensey, general manager of the Curragh, added: "There is huge anticipation and excitement building for Irish Champions Weekend. "We are delighted with the high-class entries for our major races and they highlight the added prestige of being part of such a great event. "The significant increases in prize-money has ensured that many of the world's top trainers and owners are fully supportive of the weekend."

Sylvester Kirk is weighing up his options for Newbury juvenile maiden winners Sleepy Dust and Carry On Deryck. Sylvester Kirk: Looking forward to the future Rip Van Winkle filly Sleepy Dust made an impressive racecourse debut at the Berkshire circuit at the end of May and was under consideration for this weekend's Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket, but Kirk has decided to take an easier route. With a mark of 79, we should be able to find her a nursery somewhere on good ground." Kirk was pleased with Carry On Deryck's recent triumph, particularly as his demeanour and breeding suggest he is only going to improve with time. "He's owned by Dai Walters, so if there's a novice race or something at his track (Ffos Las) it might be good to go there with him, or he might get let into a nursery."

Inchila, an unlucky fourth in the Investec Oaks for Peter Chapple-Hyam, has been put down after suffering complications from an injury she sustained in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. Inchila before the Investec Oaks Owned and bred by Woodcote Stud, the daughter of Dylan Thomas fractured her pelvis at Ascot but the initial diagnosis was good and connections had hoped to see her back on the track next year. "It's really sad and she would be a big loss to anybody, never mind a farm of our size.

16:00 Friday 8th August Racing Tips - 08/08/2014
Alex My Boy may well win the Musselburgh feature and 11/8 is tempting. He has his quirks though and has to prove he can put a run together. Saved By The Bell is next best but short enough against a very likeable favourite and I'd rather take something at a price. Lady Kashaan is a course and distance winner and won't mind any rain should it arrive. She ran well after 10 months off here last time out and has a weight pull with the 2 that finished ahead of her. The yard is in good form and she's been underestimated at 14/1 if building on that return. Musselburgh 16.00 - Lady Kashaan 1pt e/w
Just Paul loves it here and is very tempting at 7/1 but yard form is enough of a worry to swerve. They can't buy a winner. That leaves the 2 3 year olds and Red Pike looks the most progressive of them. I can't see why blinkers are back on for King Of Macedon when the visor seemed to help last time. Red Pike will not be able to dominate so connections need to let that go and race prominently off the gallop over a trip he gets. If they try and go forward, it's game over. He won at Thirsk when not leading and, with similar tactics, should take this at 11/4. The bare form of his 3rd last time out is comfortably the best on offer. Musselburgh 15.30 - Red Pike 1pt win

Fendale maintained his unbeaten record in the British Stallion Studs EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes at Musselburgh and booked his ticket for the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes at York in the process.
Bryan Smart's Exceed And Excel youngster (5-4) had won by five lengths at Beverley on his debut, but faced sterner opposition in the form of odds-on favourite Teruntum Star from the Kevin Ryan yard.
Fendale was carrying 5lb more than his market rival, who also had the assistance of 5lb claimer Kevin Stott, and he had it to do when he missed the break. But once he picked the bit up at halfway he always looked like getting on top and Paul Mulrennan only had to push him out with hands and heels to register a length and three-quarters victory.
Owner Ritchie Fiddes said: "We always thought he was a nice horse before he ran at Beverley, but you always need to see them go and do it on the track.
"We were a little worried today that five furlongs might be too sharp for him, but it was the only real option we had if we wanted him to have another run before the Gimcrack. I thought his class enabled him to win, he'll be much better over six furlongs on a galloping track like York.
" What will have helped him today is that he's come past horses, like he had to do on his debut. He was still a bit green, so every bit helps. He's beaten a nice horse there. Paul has ridden him the last twice and they rate him highly.
"As we sponsor Paul there was never any doubt he would be riding ours and he's having a great spell, I'd be amazed if anybody has ridden more winners that him in the last fortnight. He's on course to break his best ever season and the quality of horses he's riding is improving, too.
"Hopefully he can have a couple of winners at York with Moviesta in the Nunthorpe and Fendale in the Gimcrack. We might also run She's A Worldie in the Roses Stakes."
Mulrennan doubled up on Ruth Carr's Ellaal (5-1 joint-favourite) in the 'Eme Sweepstakes' Handicap.
Mark Johnston's Alex My Boy was cut to 20-1 from 33s by the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger having justified 11-8 favouritism in the Archerfield Cup.
Despite being drawn in stall 10 Joe Fanning had him handy early on and he drew further and further clear in the straight, winning by an eased-down four lengths.
As well as holding an entry in the Doncaster Classic he is engaged in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot on Champions Day and Fanning intimated he would have no problems staying two miles already. =============================================
There is a good job available to someone as Ralph Beckett's stable jockey but the Classic-winning trainer was not revealing too much after Oisin Murphy's victory aboard Mick Duggan at Lingfield.
With long-serving Jim Crowley recently opting to go freelance, Beckett is currently taking the best available for his horses, and the Jacksons Estate Agents Handicap was only the third time Murphy had ridden for him.
There is doubtless a long list of clients seeking star apprentice Murphy's services, and he helped 2-1 favourite Mick Duggan follow up a course and distance success three weeks earlier with a no-nonsense ride.
Beckett said: "I wouldn't read too much into that booking of 10 minutes ago. It's a difficult one. In an ideal world we'll have something in place before long, but how long is long?"
Beckett has revitalised Mick Duggan since receiving the chestnut from Simon Hodgson, and the trainer said: "I think there might just be a bit more left. He's a huge horse. If he gets some juice I'd love to run him on grass, a mile and six at Salisbury or something."
David Lanigan has barely had a runner during the middle of summer but his statistics remain impressive and Hoist The Colours gave the Lambourn trainer his third winner in just over a week.
July's tally came to three from nine and August would have quickly been taken to a perfect three from three had Allegation not been beaten a head at Kempton on Monday.
Hoist The Colours (8-1), a strapping Sea The Stars colt, was that touch more willing than market leaders Saarrem and Artful Rogue and beat them handsomely by four lengths in the Patrick McVeigh Maiden Stakes.
Jockey Ted Durcan said: "He's a massive horse, we've always like him, but he's just taken time. I don't know what happened last time, maybe the ground was too quick. He's next year's horse."
Those Lanigan stats looked even more impressive when Durcan and 5-4 favourite Ragged Robbin, a half-brother to the trainer's Derby runner-up Main Sequence, just lasted home in the Heart FM 97.5 FM Handicap.
Portamento was probably the smartest performer on display on a family raceday where children outnumbered punters, showing plenty of dash to get back on the winning trail in the Inox Novice Stakes.
Charlie Appleby's grey had landed a Goodwood maiden before being outclassed in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, and after a reasonable second in a similar event to this at Newmarket, was dropping down to five furlongs. The 8-13 favourite was always in command over his three rivals, scoring by a length and a half.
"He's quick, isn't he?" said jockey William Buick. "He struggled around the bends but that's fair enough as he'd never been around one before, so credit to him."
It has been musical stables for Chapellerie, who opened her account for Brendan Powell in the Tersus Handicap.
The 7-4 favourite had been a close second at the course 11 days earlier and went a place better over a furlong shorter, with the trainer's daughter Jenny delivering her late and quickening three and a quarter lengths clear.
"The saddle slipped last time, and the key is to hold on to her until the last minute," said the jockey.
Lisa Williamson's Bertie Blu Boy (9-2) clinched his fourth course and distance victory of the year in the Indus Catering Handicap.
Jimmy's Girl (3-1 joint-favourite), who is small but speedy, was a fitting winner of the Greyhound Fillies' Selling Stakes as she trapped well and never gave her rivals a look-in. Cam Hardie's mount now leaves Richard Hannon and joins Chris Dwyer, who bought her for 5,400 guineas at auction. ============================================
Richard Hannon has not yet decided whether Windshear will have another run before a possible tilt at the Ladbrokes St Leger.
A model of consistency this season, the Hurricane Run colt has not finished out of the first two in seven career starts.
He has been second in the Bahrain Trophy and the Gordon Stakes on his last two outings, traditional trials for the world's oldest Classic, but having had six runs already this term, Hannon needs to decide whether he will run in the Great Voltigeur or another such contest.
"Windshear has come out of Goodwood fine and there are no problems," said Hannon.
"He ran well in the Gordon. Maybe he was a little bit unlucky but it was still a good run, and we will have a look at the Ladbrokes St Leger now.
"I'm not sure yet if he will have another run between now and then. We will have to see."
Windshear is 14-1 for the Classic with the sponsors. =========================================
George Margarson has been left cursing his luck again after deciding not to send Lucky Kristale over to France for the Prix Maurice de Gheest this weekend.
One of last year's leading juvenile fillies, Lucky Kristale has failed to hit the anticipated heights this term, finishing well beaten in both the 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes.
Margarson had hoped a drop in trip would resurrect her campaign, but the prospect of heavy ground in Deauville has deterred him from running.
"We're not going to send her, it's going to be heavy," said Margarson.
"She must have been working well as Tom (Queally) was going to get down to 8st 8lb to ride her, but there's more rain forecast.
"We don't know that she won't go on it, but her best form is on fast ground so it seems silly to ask her to do it on heavy.
"She scoped clean this morning and we were all ready to go, but she won't.
"We'll have a sit down and look at the book now. There are a few options abroad for her, a couple in France, but her main aim now will be Champions Day I think.
"Also, we'd like to take her to America at the end of the year. =================================================
Roger Varian's unbeaten filly Cursory Glance will be seen next in either the Pinsent Masons Lowther Stakes at York on August 21 or the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh three days later.
Owned by Craig Bennett's Merry Fox Stud, the two-year-old stepped up on an encouraging debut win at Kempton when running out an impressive winner of the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The form has worked out nicely with Wesley Ward's Sunset Glow returning to America to win a Grade Two and the fifth, Richard Hannon's Osaila, taking the Princess Margaret Stakes.
Varian is considering whether to step the daughter of Distorted Humour up to seven furlongs in Ireland or keep her to six at York.
"The Lowther is on her agenda but failing that she could step up to seven furlongs for the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh on August 24. Both are Group Two races, so she wouldn't have a penalty in either," said Varian.
"She's working very well at home and I'm very happy.
"I would be worried about having to run her on soft ground as she's a very good moving horse, so that might have a bearing on where she goes. She'll always be seen to best effect on nice ground." ==============================================
Maarek faces seven rivals as he returns from a mid-season break in the Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
Victorious in last year's Prix de l'Abbaye on Arc day when trained by Barry Lalor, Maarek made a good start for new handler Evanna McCutcheon, winning one of his four starts in the spring.
The seven-year-old tasted Duke Of York Stakes success on the Knavesmire in May before chasing home subsequent dual Group One winner Slade Power when last seen over six furlongs at the Curragh later that month.
Maarek relishes cut in the ground and McCutcheon is keen to get him back on track now that some rain has arrived.
She said: "He's good, he's had a bit of break and this is his first run back, so he will come on for it a bit.
"There's only so long you can keep him going without giving him a run, so we just gave him a couple of weeks off while the ground was quick and then brought him back into full training.
"He will come on for the run, but his last run against Slade Power has worked out well as he is a top-class horse.
"He does have a penaltym but he has that for a reason as he is a Group One winner.
"He's entered in the Nunthorpe, at Haydock, the Irish Champion Sprint and Ascot, and Paris would be the ultimate aim if the ground is right."
Mick Halford's Russian Soul was a Group Three winner in Dubai back in February and returned to European action with a pleasing second behind Darwin last month.
Jamesie was third for David Marnane that day and tries his luck again, while Kevin Ryan's Hamza and the Roger Varian-trained Rocky Ground make the trip across the Irish Sea.
An Saighdiur, Scream Blue Murder and Flight Risk complete the line-up. =====================================
Connections of Kool Kompany believe the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday is shaping up into one of the best juvenile heats of the season.
The Middleham Park Racing-owned juvenile has already beaten a couple of this weekend's rivals and arrives fresh from his Group Two success in the Prix Robert Papin. He was supplemented earlier in the week.
"In typical Middleham Park style, after ending up with Toormore in one of the hottest 2000 Guineas, we've now got Kool Kompany in a pretty warm renewal of this race," said racing manager Tim Palin.
"Before we supplemented, I looked back at the record of recent races and it seemed there were one or two years when the race was less competitive, a few years where it was more so.
" The colts have to give the fillies 3lb and of course that would be a concern. However, on the ratings, our boy is on 111 and Anthem Alexander is on 105, so even with the 3lb, she would still have a bit to find, as would Beach Belle.
"But those kind of fillies can often find plenty of improvement going from their Listed win to a race like this."
Kool Kompany has shown his best form when racing prominently, including when winning the Railway Stakes on his last visit to Ireland, but Palin insists the colt does not have to make all to have a chance.
"The Robert Papin run shows that we don't have to lead, he just doesn't want settling out the back like we did at Ascot (when well beaten in the Coventry Stakes)," he said of the Richard Hannon-trained youngster.
"He can handle any type of ground but being by Jeremy, we know he will handle cut as well as quicker ground.
"It's going to be fascinating to watch, and after really bringing together the English, Irish and French form last time, we're kind of doing that again with the colts and fillies coming together.
"We will see if he's really a Group One horse on Sunday and after that we will have to work out what to do. "
Aidan O'Brien has dominated over the last 10 years, fielding no less than six winners including the likes of George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor and Mastercraftsman.
Recent Anglesey Stakes hero Dick Whittington heads his quartet with The Great War and War Envoy, who finished third behind Kool Kompany in the Railway, flying the flag for the colts. Group Three-winning filly I Am Beautiful joins them.
O'Brien told At The Races: "Dick Whittington has been a very solid horse. He travels with plenty of pace and gets it (the trip) well. The other two colts just haven't got it together yet, but we are starting to think they might.
"It looks a good race and it's important those races are competitive, it's good for everyone. =========================================
Eddie Lynam has warned Anthem Alexander could bypass the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday should the ground be too soft.
The Starspangledbanner filly has made quite an impression in her two most recent starts, winning a Tipperary maiden by seven lengths before holding off subsequent Super Sprint winner Tiggy Wiggy by a neck in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.
However, she was only sixth on her racecourse debut on very testing ground at the Curragh in May over six furlongs, sparking some concern about potential underfoot conditions as she returns to that trip.
Lynam said: " The filly has trained well, but there would have to be a question mark about her with the weather forecast. We've had some heavy rain in Ireland this morning and if the word 'soft' was in the going, I don't think she would run.
"We'll do what's right for the filly and I'll be discussing it with the owner. We've 48 hours to go so there's no need to make a decision yet. We'd be happy enough with the good to yielding it was at declaration time, but we will see with the weather.
"We're stepping her up to six furlongs and I would feel she might not get the trip and she wouldn't enjoy the ground if it were soft. She has been going well, though, and we're happy with her.
"(The form) has and hasn't worked out from Ascot. The second, Tiggy Wiggy, has since gone on and won but the third (Newsletter) has let the form down a bit, so I suppose it's a case of six and two threes. It just depends how you read it, but the Queen Mary is usually a good race."
What looks a red-hot renewal has drawn a field of nine, with the Johnny Murtagh-trained Kasbah the only horse yet to win a race and the sole runner rated less than 100.
Lynam went on: "It looks a very strong race with eight of the nine runners rated 100 or more. The filly (Beach Belle) looks very nice and Richard Hannon's horse (Kool Kompany) sets the bar for me after he won the Prix Robert Papin.
"Aidan O'Brien has a very good record in the race and he runs four, while Capella Sansevero was second in the Coventry at Ascot, so it's a very strong race.
"She's as good as we can get her and if she can get some nice ground, I think she will run well." ========================================
The Tim Pitt-trained gelding had finished a close seventh in the 32Red (Stewards') Cup at Glorious Goodwood last weekend and d ropping back to five furlongs on quick ground, he was always just chasing along to stay in touch.
Abstraction hit the front a furlong out, but Sir Maximilian ( 2-1) found his feet and picked up really well for Stevie Donohoe inside the last to cut down the leader and eventually win by a relatively cosy three-quarters of a length, with 13-8 favourite Russian Soul in third.
It was a second Irish win from as many tries for Pitt's charge, who had lifted a valuable handicap at the Curragh last month.
The trainer said: "H e's a very good horse, we're only getting to know him now and five furlongs is his trip.
"He did it the hard way and probably ran a better race in the Rockingham than tonight. T he stiffer incline at the Curragh suited him more, he had to grit it out today. H e'll run in the Flying Five at the Curragh next and then on to the Prix de l'Abbaye."
East India was beaten at long odds-on in the Coolmore Canford Cliffs Stakes, the other Listed contest on the card.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained son of Galileo looked a Classic prospect in the making when staying on strongly to score by a narrow margin on his racecourse bow at the Curragh, and was backed at all rates to build on that in this extended seven-furlong contest, being sent off at 1-5.
All appeared to be going well for his followers through the early stages, but the warning signs appeared rounding the turn for home and on straightening up it was clear Joseph O'Brien's mount would have to go some to reel in the front-running Convergence in the hands of Colin Keane.
In the end the Ger Lyons-trained Convergence (7-2) proved far too strong, winning by five lengths, with East India clear of the rest.
The victorious Cape Cross colt was scoring for the second time from five starts.
The winning trainer's brother, Shane, said: "He's a tough, tough horse. I thought Aidan's would have to be a Derby horse to beat him, and I said to Aidan before the race that he's a dogfighter. I didn't think he'd win like that, but he does it the hard way every day and he's a true professional.
"We are looking forward to running him in a good race with a real gallop. He's gone on soft, good and today was the quickest he's run, but he's a horse to get excited about."

Mount Athos is set to miss the rest of the year after suffering an injury setback. Mount Athos: Out for the season Trainer Marco Botti and owner Dr Marwan Koukash had been eyeing another trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup, a race in which he finished third last year and fifth in 2012 when trained by Luca Cumani. After two fairs runs in Dubai, Mount Athos was last sighted when winning the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury in May. Botti reported the seven-year-old to be sore after that victory and after a break failed to resolve his issue, further investigation has revealed a ligament problem. The Newmarket handler said: "When he ran last time, he came back quite jarred up and sore after the race so we decided to give him a break to freshen him up and let things settle down. "When he came back into full training, I wasn't 100 per cent happy with his action so we investigated a bit more and there is a problem with his suspensory ligament. "He is an older horse so it can take some time to come right, so we will have to see how it goes and he will probably miss the rest of the year. "He's a horse that always tries his best and we would hate for something drastic to happen to him on a racecourse, especially if he were to run on fast ground in the Melbourne Cup. "We will give him time to get over this problem and then see where we are."

Richard Fahey wouldn't mind a drop of rain as he prepares to saddle his usual bumper team up and down the country on Saturday. ski Max: Lowest ever handicap mark (Sal Smithson - I’ve got runners around the country on Saturday and I’m hopeful of a winner or two, as the horses are running well – although a drop or two of rain is definitely going to help our chances, so I’m keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts. Ballesteros starts things off in the first race on the Shergar Cup card at Ascot, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash. The prize-money isn’t quite as good as it once was, but it’s still pretty decent, and owners get looked after well at the meeting, so we like to have runners if we can. That said Ballesteros really does want rain and if it doesn’t come, I might be forced to take him out as I don’t want to keep banging his head against a wall on ground that’s too quick for him. If the rain comes, I think he’s fairly-handicapped now on bits of his best form. We’ve got Hayley Turner in the draw for jockeys, which is good news. In fact, I think I’ve done pretty well on that front. Dolphin Village is only third reserve for the Shergar Cup Challenge, which is a shame, as I’d like to have seen how he would have got on. Olivier Peslier rides Our Gabrial in the Shergar Cup Classic. I was pleased with how he saw out the mile and a half last time and I think he’s got the right sort of man on board as he needs a ride. Rufford has top-weight in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint. He’s had a bit of a break as we waited for a bit of juice in the ground but to be fair there haven’t been many obvious opportunities for a horse with his rating. He’s come down a few pounds this season, I suspect he might need to come down a few more, but we’ve got Frankie [Dettori] on our side here and you never know. He seems well at home. Docs Legacy has been off for a year after doing a suspensory but gets back on the road in the Betfred Goals Galore Handicap. The handicapper never seems to drop ours when they’ve had long absences as they seem to do for other stables, so he’s 4lb higher here than when he was second on his most recent start. The form of that race worked out well enough, but I’d be surprised if he was ready enough to win this. He’s done plenty of canters, but there’s no substitute for race-fitness. I’m running Brae Hill and Extraterrestrial in the Betfred Duke Of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry Handicap. ET may be 10 but he genuinely seems as good as ever this season. A drop of rain wouldn’t harm him, but this is tough. Brae Hill is another who just needs some rain. He’s showing bits and pieces of form but it might just be that he wants to go back to Doncaster now. Rene Mathis goes to Newmarket for the Buy German, Race German, Win German Handicap, with David Nolan on board again. He’s a bull of a horse, who ran another great race at York last time. He’s really tough and, again, rain wouldn’t harm his chances, although he goes back up to seven furlongs here and I’m certain that’s in his favour too. I’d love to see him run well again. Ideally, I’d like to get him into the Ayr Gold Cup, but he probably needs to win this if he’s going to make the cut. I’m going to sound like a stuck record but Nashville wants a drop of rain too. He’s knocking on the door and can run well in the Pamela Happy 80th Birthday Handicap if the race goes his way. Chiswick Bey had a really busy time last year, running on the all-weather right up to the end of 2013 and he’d earned a break. It will be a tough ask for him first time back at Redcar in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap against race-fit rivals, but I wouldn’t be that surprised to see him run well at a big price. He seems particularly well in himself now and I hope we can get him winning races again. Personal Touch was going to run the other day but picked up a little knock, although he’s fine again now. Rain is going to help him in the Win A VIP Day Out Handicap, although to be fair to Redcar, it never seems to get that quick there. He’s had a bit of a break since his last run but he’s in good form. The rest of my runners head up to Scotland to Ayr, where I suspect the going is more likely to be on the soft side. Ewell Place has become very frustrating, but I’d love to get a win out of him in the QTS Training Ltd Apprentice Handicapand we’ll have to see what Jack [Garritty] can manage. He’s basically a horse who doesn’t try very hard, but this does looks a fair opportunity. Cosmic Statesman runs in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes. I’d like to think he’ll win a maiden and he’s come on for his debut but there could be a couple of live ones in here against him. He’s a good, solid sort of horse though. Kyllachy Star is well-handicapped now, if he can find his form again. He seemed to have gone a little off the boil, so I’ve freshened him up. Now we’ll see what he can do back on the track in the Unison's Ayrshire & Arran Health Branch Handicap. It was only a seller in which Lady Mai was third at the start of the week, but it was frustrating because she really should have won if she’d got a bit of a clearer run and getting wins out of these horses is what it’s all about. She’s only moderate but at least she seems in good heart at present so I'm hoping she goes well in the Gas Sure & James Frew Handicap. Polski Max is in the QTS Ladies Night Grand Spectacular Handicap. After a couple of wins early last season, he’d gone up to a mark from which he simply couldn’t win and it’s been a long struggle for him since. On the plus-side, he has now come right back down in the weights and I've stuck some cheekpieces on him. In fact, this is his lowest-ever handicap mark and he will never have run in a race as easy as this, so I’m trying to be hopeful. But the thing now is to try and get his confidence back. Last, but hopefully not least, is Ingleby Symphony in the QTS Ladies' Night Handicap. She ran well last time when going back up to a mile and quarter seemed to help her. She’s an honest sort of filly who deserves to get her head in front again

Marco Botti believes Golden Steps could be his best chance of an Ascot winner in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint. Marco Botti: Has a couple in the Sprint The Newmarket handler has shown plenty of support for the international jockeys competition, running four horses across the afternoon, including Golden Steps and Sir Robert Cheval in the six-furlong finale. Golden Steps was most recently sighted when finishing sixth in a decent race at Newmarket last month on what was only his sixth racecourse outing. The Footstepsinthesand gelding sneaks in at the bottom of the weights for this heat and Botti is upbeat about his chance for jockey Jimmy Fortune. He said: "He's in good form and he ran well in Newmarket last time. "I think he is probably our best chance of a winner." Sir Robert Cheval finished fourth in a Lingfield Listed heat earlier in the year and Botti would not be surprised if he were also in the mix for Japanese rider Yuichi Fukunaga. He said: "Sir Robert Cheval has been gelded since his last run at Ascot in May. "He has some nice form in the past and we think he has probably improved since his operation. "He's probably an each-way chance, I would say." Remember will be having her first run away from Newmarket for quite some time as she lines up for Richard Hannon. The filly has run at Headquarters the last six times and Hannon is pleased to have Craig Williams aboard. He told "Craig Williams is a good Aussie jockey so we are happy to have him for Remember in the finale. "She has been in good form this summer and will enjoy the fast ground."

15:15 Saturday 9th August Racing Tips - 09/08/2014
Made In Rio's form looks rock solid given how well she traveled at Goodwood before hitting a wall and that makes Hassle look well treated under a 3lb hike for their course and distance meeting. He will want a little rain overnight but should be favourite for this and shorter than 5/1 for a yard going well. Olivier Peslier has a likeable book of rides at Ascot and this could kick off a decent afternoon. If it stays quick then Big Thunder may take some stopping but he still has to prove himself at the trip. Ascot 13.30 - Hassle 1pt win
Bantam will not want too much rain but she still looks well treated now back over a suitable trip and with the yard bang in form finally. She can be forgiven her reappearance effort at Newmarket over 10 furlongs and will go close at 12/1, especially if Boonga Roogeta obliges in taking them along at a generous pace. Charles Camoin is of interest upped in trip and so too Presburg but neither are worth money at their current prices. Ascot 14.05 - Bantam 1pt e/w
With a bit of rain at Haydock throughout Friday afternoon, Energia Davos could end up a steal at 18/1 for the 10 furlong handicap at Haydock. He ran well at Meydan without getting his head in front but looks more at home on turf and turf with some ease in it based on his Brazilian form. He was a little unlucky at Chester when having to come wide into the turn and has dropped to a workable mark. I fancy he'll get further so the pace on show here is a plus and he's much more appealing than the shorter Rye House, who could take some stopping if the ground goes soft. Haydock 14.20 - Energia Davos 1pt e/w
I want to oppose Hillstar at this trip with little pace on and on ground that is probably softer than ideal, though Ryan Moore may well get him back to winning ways in what looks a far easier race than he's been contesting of late. Nabucco is a generous price and will find this easier than when giving away weight on 2 starts this term. He will want rain. A little more progressive and versatile with regard to the ground though is Vancouverite who should really have won last time. He has to contend with a lack of pace so will not want to be left with lots to do but Crowley should be alert to that and he left the impression there'd be more to come after traveling over the whole field at Newbury. 5/1 can be taken and taken again. Haydock 14.55 - Vancouverite 2pt win
I don't know a huge amount about Emma Jayne-Wilson but she has a great chance of riding Astronereus to a win at Ascot. Amanda Perrett has started the month slowly but the yard are still going well and this Sea The Stars colt shaped as though he was crying out for further last time. Rain would be a plus but I'm not sure he'll get that, though it's not essential given how he traveled on decent ground at Goodwood. Eased 1lb, and I can't work out why, he should have a decent pace to aim at from stable companion Pack Leader and both or one of Mr Gallivanter and Our Gabrial. That will suit this hold up type who may not be good enough to take up his St Leger entry but can go close here off 86 at 8/1. Trip To Paris is comfortably next best at the prices. Ascot 15.15 - Astronereus 1pt e/w

Race Ratings Saturday, 9 August - 2.55 Haydock Betfred Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1)1m 2f 95y
9-3621 Amralah 21 4 Mick Channon Has winning form between 1m 2f and 1m 4f, includ- ing when posting a career-best effort to land a Listed race at Newbury last time. Connections felt that he would show more this season and he is improving, but faces tougher opposition here. RATING 96 3-1241 Arod 23 3 Peter Chapple-Hyam Unexposed son of Teofilo who finished second in the Dante (winner won French Derby next time), was fourth in the Derby and then dropped in class and back in trip to 1m 2f to win a Leicester condi- tions race as he pleased. Has more on his plate here, but with just five runs under his belt, further improvement cannot be ruled out and if the ground quickens up, he could give the market principals a fright. RATING 98 510 Ayrad 69 3 Roger Varian Former Derby entrant who has won an ordinary 1m Hamilton maiden in easy fashion. Contested the French Derby on only his third career start, last time, when slowly away, but after being shuffled back in the field, he was never really a factor. Potentially a smart horse, but has quite a bit to prove. RATING 94 915223 Bow Creek 8 3 Mark Johnston Son of Shamardal who has generally shown good form to date on soft ground, including when second over this trip in a Listed race at Chester. Has since surpassed that form over 1m on last two starts, when second in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and was third in a Group 3 at Goodwood last Friday. Not certain that step back up to 1m 2f at a gallop- ing track will suit. RATING 95 21-636 Danadana 14 6 Luca Cumani Son of Dubawi who has blossomed with maturity in past three seasons, progressing from handicaps to Group 3 and Listed races. Trip and ground should suit today, but this season's form has been a little in and out at this level and he doesn't look an obvious winner. RATING 95 65044 Educate 28 5 Ismail Mohammed Proved value as a very good handicapper when win- ning the Cambridgeshire last season, but has been something of an also-ran in Group races since that performance, if not disgraced. Latest fourth in valu- able 1m 2f handicap at York gives him an each-way squeak in this race. RATING 96 2-2112 Gatewood 42 6 John Gosden Son of Galileo who has been running consistently well in Group 3 and Listed races since joining John Gosden at the end of last summer. Has multiple win- ning form on the ground and over distance, and should be in the mix for the places. RATING 97 181342 Grandeur 28 5 Jeremy Noseda Son of Verglas who has been running well in defeat in Grade 1 races in America lately, prior to which, he won the Lingfield Winter Derby and a valuable con- ditions race at that course at Easter. Should enter se- rious reckoning on best form. RATING 99 211-33 Nabucco 21 5 John Gosden Handles a variety of surfaces, though best form suggests his connections will be hoping for some rain to ease the expected good ground. Has devel- oped into a solid Listed-class contender this sea- son, and was third to Amralah last time at Newbury. Vulnerable to classier, less-exposed rivals here, though. RATING 95 004061 Sennockian Star 11 4 Mark Johnston Won a 1m 2f handicap at Goodwood last week, in a week when his stable was going well. Has yet to break out of handicaps into Pattern races, though, and as a veteran of 33 starts, seems doubtful there's too much improvement to be found for this step-up in class. RATING 93 1-162 Spark Plug 23 3 Brian Meehan Unexposed and gently progressive son of Dylan Thomas, who although beaten nine lengths by Arod at Leicester last time, may still have more to offer. Wasn't beaten far when sixth to Cannock Chase in a Group 3 over distance at Royal Ascot, and could go well at a nice price. RATING 97 45137 Tha ́ir 11 4 Saeed bin Suroor Classy two-year-old who hasn't really developed into the Group-race performer that he was expected to. Was sandwiched between Amralah (second) and Educate (fourth) when third in a Listed race at Sandown in early July, and looked outpaced when seventh behind Sennockian Star at Goodwood last week. Others preferred. RATING 92 985129 Tres Coronas 64 7 David Barron A useful handicapper who has steadily climbed the ratings over the past two seasons. Likes some cut in the ground and beat Sennockian Star in such conditions at Chester in May. Bigger task here, on Group race debut. RATING 94 1-1375 True Story 35 3 Saeed bin Suroor Listed win at Newmarket's Craven meeting was fol- lowed by a good third in the Dante, but Derby per- formance was a little underwhelming. That said, fifth place in a messy renewal of the Eclipse Stakes wasn't without merit and this race looks a little eas- ier. Could be thereabouts. RATING 97 19-282 Vancouverite 21 4 Charlie Appleby Went very close to winning on British debut, when a head-second to Amralah in a Listed race at Newbury last time. Past form includes a Group 1- second in Dubai earlier this year, and that form gives him an each-way chance in this company. RATING 98 1-1724 Wall Of Sound 15 4 Tom Dascombe Has been placed once in four starts in Listed races (three of which were over distance) and looks to have hit the buffers in terms of having a progres- sive profile. Above average, but has plenty to find in this company. RATING 90 6-0222 Hillstar 30 4 Sir Michael Stoute Highlight of career to date came when he was third in last year's King George VI and Queen Eliz- abeth Stakes, and nearly matched that form when second to Cavalryman in the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket last month. Interesting on drop in class and trip for stable that has won this race twice in the past decade. RATING 100 =========================================
NOTEBOOK.
The 6f fillies' maiden at Windsor last Monday didn't look to contain anything out of the ordinary, but there may be a few winners among the newcomers. Among those was the second-placed PENNY PEPPER , of trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, who came through nicely from the rear and just looked as though she'd come on for the run. A half-sister to a Listed winner over just further than 6f, Penny Pepper looks a maiden winner sooner rather than later, particularly if placed against her own sex. Unlike Penny Pepper, who was sent off at 4/1, the John Jenkins-trained LOLITA was overlooked in the markets and went to post at 50/1. By Sir Percy and out of a dam who was a 6f winner at two, but also a half-sister to a winner at distances of up to 1m 4f, it wasn't so surprising that punters perhaps thought Lolita would show more over longer dis- tances than 6f. However, although she was posi- tioned close to the pace, to presumably make the most of her stamina, she showed sufficient dash to suggest that she can make her mark this sea- son, maybe over 6 or 7f. In the same race, the fifth-placed CASCADING STARS , trained by Stan Moore, ran on well from a long way back. A half-sister to three winners at distances between 5f and 1m, she will have learned a lot for this run, and if she doesn't cut it in maidens, she may be one to watch out for in nursery handicaps. In the 7f nursery handicap at Kempton, the Willie Muir-trained JET MATE ran the best race of his short, four-race career to date, when finishing his race very well in the final furlong and came home in fourth place. From a family with winning form between 7f and 1m, Jet Mate had been struggling over 5 and 6f in his previous races, and clearly benefitted for the step up to 7f on this latest start. He can be placed to good effect in nurseries before too long. =======================================
RACING NEWS.
British Horseracing Authority chief exec- utive Paul Bittar is set to stand down next year as his three-year term draws to a close this autumn. According to reports, Bittar has not confirmed what his next po- sition will be, or whether it will be in rac- ing. Prior to his appointment with the BHA, Bittar was chief strategy officer for Racing Victoria and chief executive of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. Sea The Moon's trainer Markus Klug be- lieves his charge, the runaway winner of the German Derby earlier this season, has the quality to win October's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Sea The Moon is currently sec- ond-favourite for France's premier Flat race with most bookmakers, behind Tagroodah, the John Gosden-trained winner of the Epsom Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, who Klug nominates as one of Sea The Moon's main rivals, along with the Epsom Derby winner, Australia. Klug reports that Sea The Moon will proba- bly run in the Grosser Preis Von Baden at Baden-Baden racecourse next month. In a tactically-run race, the Andre Fabre- trained Esoterique ran out the surprise winner of the Group 1 Prix de Rothschild at Deauville last Sunday, beating her sta- blemate, the 1,000 Guineas winner Miss France, and the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes and Falmouth Stakes winner, Integral, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who was sent off the 8/13 favourite. John Gosden's excellent record for training winners in Goodwood's Group 1 Nassau Stakes was enhanced further last weekend, when Sultanina recorded her first win at the highest level. The success was also the third Group 1 win in a week for Gosden, fol- lowing on from Tagroodah's win at Ascot the previous weekend, and Kingman's stylish victory in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood three days earlier. Gosden said that Sultanina may now head to the Group 1 Fillies and Mares race at Ascot's Champi- ons Meeting in October. In response to Kingman's Goodwood win, trainer Richard Hannon outlined his plans to beat the talented three-year-old, with either Toronado, who was runner-up in the Sussex Stakes, or Olympic Glory, set to take on Kingman in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot's Champions Meeting. Warwick racecourse has announced that it will become solely a Jumps course from next season, in the wake of problems con- cerning the bend on its Flat course, where the straight and round courses merge, and a horse fell fatally at a meeting at the course in May. The bend has been subse- quently realigned, but the racecourse's owner, Jockey Club Racecourses, has de- cided to focus on turning Warwick into one of the country's leading smaller Jumps courses. Leading Jumps owner J P McManus enjoyed his first-ever winner in the Galway Hurdle last week when Thomas Edison, ridden by Tony McCoy and trained by Tony Martin, won by a clear margin. McManus has won the Galway Plate six times to date, but Thomas Edison was the owner's first winner in the meeting's premier hurdle race, and McCoy attributed the win to the confidence boost the seven-year- old has had by winning on the Flat this summer. =================================================
STAT WATCH.
This Saturday's action is all on the Flat, with Channel 4 covering the meetings from Ascot (2.05, 2.40 and 3.50), Haydock (1.50, 2.20 and 2.55) and Newmarket (3.35.) Expect trainer Richard Hannon to have plenty of winners at these three meetings, and all should be given a second glance in the betting, as the trainer saddled more winners than any other UK trainer in the week ending Monday, 4 August. Hannon's 10 winners bettered the 6 apiece of Davids O'Meara and Simcock. The latter's strike rate was an excellent 35%, equalled by Mick Easterby, just edged by the 36% of Ed Dunlop and only surpassed by the outstanding 57% of Chris Wall. Form jockey of the week by strike rate was Sam James, a regular rider for David O'Meara, who rode 4 winners from 5 starts, equating to an 80% strike rate. The next-best strike rate was the 40% of Andrea Atzeni, but, by wins, William Buick's 9 wins made him the most prolific jockey of the week, 1 win clear of Paul Mulrennan, and both had chalked up strike rates of 36% in the process. Turning to the racing action this Saturday, the 2.05 at Ascot is the 1m 4f Class 2 handicap, in which form trainer James Fanshawe (29% wins in the past 14 days) could saddle Gone Dutch, who has winning form on the expected good- firm ground and could improve for the step up to 1m 4f. Ed Dunlop's team is also going well (28%), with Bantam boasting winning form on the going and over distance, if not to the same extent as the consistent Dolphin Village, trained by Richard Fahey, who has won three times on the ground and four times over distance. At Haydock, the first of the televised races, at 1.50, is a 5f nursery handicap, which looks within the compasses of the Clive Cox-trained Profitable, who has won over distance already and looks a little less exposed than some of her possible rivals in this race. Willie Haggas's Squats could go well, given his trainer's super 38% strike rate in the last fortnight and 31% strike rate at the course in the past five seasons. In the 3.25, a fillies' Listed race over 1m, the Olly Stevens-trained Lightning Thunder looks to have a decent chance, with the highest official rating of all the entrants (111), allied to the useful weight concession that three-year-olds enjoy rel- ative to their counterparts. She was runner-up in the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas races, and was last seen when only beaten four lengths in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Kiyoshi went well last time at this level, when second in a Listed race over distance, and she has bits of Group 1-placed form from last sea- son. Her trainer, Charles Hills, has a fair 16% strike rate at Haydock. The sole televised race from Newmarket is the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at 3.35. Saeed Bin Suroor has trained two winners of this race in the past 10 years, and course and distance winner Winters Moon is one of the less ex- posed horses in this race, but her maiden win is working out well, with the second and third both winning next time. Of the trainers with en- trants in this race, Suroor has the best strike rate (23%) at the course over the last five sea- sons and has also trained the most winners at the course in the same period. An alternative to consider is David Elsworth's Arabian Queen, who has won a Group 2, handles testing and quicker ground, and comes from a stable that has the third-best wins record at the course in the past five seasons. ===========================================

Views from connections ahead of Sunday's Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh. Maarek: In action again this weekend. Maarek faces seven rivals as he returns from a mid-season break in Sunday's Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh. Victorious in the Abbaye at last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting when trained by Barry Lalor, Maarek made a good start for new handler Evanna McCutcheon winning one of his four starts in the spring. The seven-year-old tasted Duke of York Stakes success on the Knavesmire in May before chasing home subsequent dual Group One winner Slade Power when last seen over six furlongs at the Curragh in May. Maarek relishes cut in the ground and McCutcheon is keen to get him back on track now that some rain has arrived. She said: "He's good, he's had a bit of break and this is his first run back so he will come on for it a bit. "There's only so long you can keep him going without giving him a run, so we just gave him a couple of weeks off while the ground was quick and then brought him back into full training. "He will come on for the run but his last run against Slade Power has worked out well as he is a top-class horse. "He does have a penalty but he has that for a reason as he is a Group One winner. "He's entered in the Nunthorpe, at Haydock, the Irish Champion Sprint and Ascot and Paris would be the ultimate aim if the ground is right." Mick Halford's Russian Soul was a Group Three winner in Dubai back in February and returned to European action with a pleasing second behind Darwin last month. Jamesie was third for David Marnane that day and tries his luck again while Kevin Ryan's Hamza and the Roger Varian-trained Rocky Ground make the trip across the Irish Sea. An Saighdiur, Scream Blue Murder and Flight Risk complete the line-up.

Eddie Lynam has warned Anthem Alexander could bypass Sunday's Keeneland Phoenix Stakes should the ground prove too soft. Anthem Alexander appears through the crowd to win the Queen Mary Stakes. Lynam said: "[The form] has and hasn't worked out from Ascot. The second, Tiggy Wiggy, has since gone on and won but the third (Newsletter) has let the form down a bit so I suppose it's a case of six and two threes, it just depends how you read it but the Queen Mary is usually a good race. "The filly has trained well, but there would have to be a question mark about her with the weather forecast. "She has been going well, though, and we're happy with her." What looks a red-hot renewal has drawn a field of nine, with the Johnny Murtagh-trained Kasbah the only horse yet to win a race and the sole runner rated less than 100. Lynam said: "It looks a very strong race with eight of the nine runners rated 100 or more. The filly (Beach Belle) looks very nice and Richard Hannon's horse (Kool Kompany) sets the bar for me after he won the Prix Robert Papin. "Aidan O'Brien has a very good record in the race and he runs four while Capella Sansevero was second in the Coventry at Ascot, so it's a very strong race. "She's as good as we can get her and if she can get some nice ground, I think she will run well." Kool Kompany has already beaten a couple of this weekend's rivals and arrives fresh from his Group Two success in the Papin. He was supplemented earlier in the week and Tim Palin, racing manager for owners Middleham Park Racing, believes the contest is shaping up into one of the best juvenile heats of the season. He said: "Before we supplemented, I looked back at the record of recent races and it seemed there were one or two years when the race was less competitive, a few years where it was more so. "In typical Middleham Park style, after ending up with Toormore in one of the hottest 2000 Guineas, we've now got Kool Kompany in a pretty warm renewal of this race. "The colts have to give the fillies 3lb and of course that would be a concern, as 3lb is 3lb. "However, on the ratings, our boy is on 111 and Anthem Alexander is on 105 so even with the 3lb, she would still have a bit to find, as would Beach Belle, but those kind of fillies can often find plenty of improvement going from their Listed win to a race like this." Kool Kompany has shown his best form to date when racing prominently - but Palin insists the Jeremy colt does not have to make all to have a winning chance. "The Robert Papin run shows that we don't have to lead, he just doesn't want settling out the back like we did at Ascot (when well beaten in the Coventry Stakes)," he said. "He can handle any type of ground but being by Jeremy, we know he will handle cut as well as quicker ground. "It's going to be fascinating to watch on Sunday, and after really bringing together the English, Irish and French form last time, we're kind of doing that again with the colts and fillies coming together. "We will see if he's really a Group One horse on Sunday and after that we will have to work out what to do." Aidan O'Brien has dominated over the last 10 years, fielding no less than six winners including the likes of George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor and Mastercraftsman. Recent Anglesey Stakes hero Dick Whittington heads his quartet with The Great War and War Envoy, who finished third behind Kool Kompany in the Railway Stakes, flying the flag for the colts. O'Brien's also runs Curragh Group Three winner I Am Beautiful, one of three fillies in the race along with Alexander Anthem and Kevin Prendergast's unbeaten Beach Belle. O'Brien told At The Races: "Dick Whittington has been a very solid horse. He travels with plenty of pace and gets it (the trip) well. The other two colts just haven't got it together yet but we are starting to think that they might. "It looks a good race and it's important that those races are competitive, it's good for everyone." The Ger Lyons-trained Coventry Stakes runner-up Capella Sansevero completes the line-up.
