Dermot Weld is hoping Fascinating Rock will be better suited by the Curragh track in Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby than he was by the contours of Epsom. Fascinating Rock: Lines up in the Irish Derby Winner of a Leopardstown maiden on the first day of the season, he followed up in the Ballysax Stakes and was awarded the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial by the Leopardstown stewards. He managed only eighth place in the Investec Derby on his first attempt at 12 furlongs, but rather than using the trip as an excuse for the son of Fastnet Rock, Weld believes it was the gradients of Epsom that did not suit. "Fascinating Rock has done really well since Epsom," said Weld. "The horse just didn't handle the track that day and we expect a better showing from him on Saturday." John Oxx ran Ebanoran at Epsom but felt he failed to get home over the trip so is he turns to Ponfeigh, who has two wins over a mile to his name this season. "Ponfeigh has had two quick runs but he is in good order and will take his chance in Saturday's race," said Oxx. "We have always liked this horse and he has a nice turn of foot. Obviously the step up in grade and trip is unknown territory for him but, on form, he is entitled to take his chance." The race is likely to revolve around Epsom winner Australia, one of seven possibles for Aidan O'Brien. He is likely to be a very warm order to emulate his former stablemate Camelot, who completed the Classic double two years ago. While O'Brien will be hoping the rain stays away for his new star, connections of Derby runner-up Kingston Hill will be hoping for rain to enable a rematch to take place. "We're looking at the weather. They are saying they could get up to 15 millimetres of rain and if that was the case, we'd love to run if we got good ground or easier," said David Eustace, assistant to trainer Roger Varian. As well as Australia, O'Brien could run Geoffrey Chaucer, who was all but pulled up at Epsom, Kingfisher, Mekong River, Orchestra, Table Rock and War Command, who was a fast-finishing fourth over a mile in the St James's Palace Stakes last week. Godolphin's True Story, one place in front of Fascinating Rock at Epsom, could also renew rivalry. Bookmakers Sky Bet make Australia their 2/5 favourite, with Kingston Hill next in the market at 3/1.

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott has confirmed that Big Thunder is likely to be his only runner in Saturday's Northumberland Plate. Sir Mark Prescott relies on Big Thunder in the Northumberland Plate this weekend."] The son of Dalakhani is a 16/1 shot with Sky Bet for the Pitmen's Derby but Prescott has revealed that his other runner, Alcaeus, could miss out. "Big Thunder is on target for Newcastle but he's likely to be my only runner," Prescott told At The Races. "He won five out of seven last season but will he be able to improve from three to four? That's the question. He'll love the quick ground. His work I don't think has been as impressive this spring as it was last autumn. He's not particularly been catching my eye and he's not really been giving me that wow factor, but of course he's capable of putting it all together on the racecourse and he will love the firm ground. "I've never won the Northumberland Plate. We got beat a short-head with Hasten To Add and everyone thought we'd won, including the police and the cameras - that was the closest we've been." Prescott has had a slow start to the season and only had the first runner from his Heath House yard this week. He admitted that he hasn't got the fire power this year that he has had in the past but is still confident of a successful season. "If I haven't got horses with early engagements I like to try and target them to start running at the end of the first week or the start of the second week of May, which means starting to work them during Easter week. But when I did start to work them they had all gone visibly backwards," explained the trainer. "So rather than continue to work them I put them all back to three weeks' trotting. They seemed to come through that well but the maths are that if you trot for three weeks it takes until now it get them to the racecourse. "They seem healthy now and I haven't damaged any of them. I've probably got a less-talented squad than some years to try and make up more ground than usual which will be a big ask, but not impossible. At least they're healthy and I don't think I have spoilt them."

21:20 Thursday 26th June Racing Tips - 26/06/2014
I'm a big fan of Fort Bastion but don't think he has much in hand off his current mark. That said, he did have excuses at Ascot and will give a much bolder show today. Dance And Dance is well treated but blah blah blah, it's Dance And Dance, whilst Heavy Metal is back to the sort of mark he has struggled from in the past, though he is technically 2lb well in. Bold Prediction will be a danger if allowed an easy lead but the really progressive sort is Baraweez who will find this tougher but who will sit prominently and could still be ahead of his mark. He wants better ground than he had when beaten by Busatto on penultimate start and it may still have been on the soft side last time when scoring at Musselburgh. It's a competitive race but everything else has a question mark next to it and I thought he'd be shorter than 7/2. Newcastle 15.30 - Baraweez 2pt win
There's an ultra competitive 5 furlong handicap to close the Hamilton card and I think there's a few decent prices floating around. Mr Mo Jo and Salvatore Fury head the market and preference would be for the latter. The former is 5lb well in after finishing 2nd 9 days ago at Thirsk. This is sure to be run at a fierce pace however, and he'll not be allowed to dominate as he likes to. Salvatore Fury showed a return to form last time but is short for horse still 3lb higher than his last win, though he does look the likely winner. Bronze Beau will appreciate this quicker ground and is worth serious consideration, though he too likes to dominate. I prefer the price of Sunny Side Up at 14/1 who is very well treated on the form of his days with Richard Fahey and who has had just 3 starts on soft for a new yard this term. His 3 turf wins have come on good to firm (was placed on heavy) and a strong pace will help here dropping back to 5 furlongs for a yard in good form. He's 7lb below his last success and tongue tied for the first time. Hamilton 21.20 - Sunny Side Up 1pt e/w

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
LINGFIELD PARK SIXTH JUNE (EVENING) MEETING 2014
The All New 32RedSport.com Selling Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 26 June 2014 considered an appeal lodged by Martin Lane, the rider of ARCHDUCHESS, placed second in the All New 32RedSport.com Selling Stakes, against the decision of the Stewards at Lingfield Park on 21 June 2014 to suspend him for 3 days. The suspension was as a result of a finding of a breach of Rule (B)67.4.3 of the Rules of Racing in that he had weighed in at 2lb or more over the weight at which he had weighed out.
The Panel considered evidence from Lane, who was legally represented.
The Panel noted that on the facts of the case, Lane had failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that he weighed in less than 2lbs above the weight at which he weighed out, in that: (i) his displayed weight weighing out was 119.5lbs which was rounded down to 119lbs; (ii) he knew a chamois and a non-slip pad was to be used which would absorb moisture; (iii) he did not, nor did he ask his valet, to check the size of the chamois, nor wet it, before weighing out, and (iv) he knew the length of the race and the weather conditions.
The Panel therefore found Lane in breach of Rule (B)67.4.3 and dismissed his appeal. It confirmed the suspension of 3 days on Sunday 6, Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 July 2014 inclusive. It ordered that the deposit be returned.

Abbaye option for Never Last year's Prix Morny winner No Nay Never could return to France for the Prix de l'Abbaye. The Scat Daddy colt created a big impression in winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer before heading to France to win the Group One which contained subsequent top level-winning fillies Vorda and Rizeena. No Nay Never has only run once since, when second at Gulfstream Park over seven furlongs, after which plans to return to Royal Ascot were scratched. "There are some options for No Nay Never in the fall at Saratoga," said trainer Wesley Ward. "We might consider going back to France for the Abbaye with him, I'll have to see what the owners say. "He can handle softer ground, I wouldn't be worried about that. "The day he won the Morny last year the track had a big dousing of rain on it. "He'll certainly be given the option, anyway." ====================================== Approval for Warwick sprint track Warwick racecourse staged a successful trial after the realignment of its sprint course following remedial work. Jockeys had reported a loss of confidence in some areas of the track after Artful Lady suffered a fatal fall in May. Two fixtures (July 4, August 25) will now take place on the sprint track while others have already been moved to Nottingham and Carlisle. Jockey Fergus Sweeney was present in his role as the Professional Jockeys Association safety officer and said: "We were perfectly happy, they have done a good job and it was really nice ground. "The configuration of the rails was spot on and this was a real test, we all came together on the turn and were going as quick as we could have done at the sharpest point. "We got round it fine, it rode really well. It was lovely ground and there will be no problems for the next fixture - it gets the thumbs up from the lads." All races at the two meetings will be sprints and will take place on ground no faster than good, achieved through watering if required. =========================================== Goodwood goal for Elite Elite Army will go on trial for the St Leger in the Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. His trainer Saeed bin Suroor had nominated the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket as his likely next target following his impressive win in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last week. However, he will now head to Sussex for a race used by the likes of Sixties Icon and Conduit as a stepping stone to St Leger glory in recent years. "Elite Army is good. He's content, well, fresh and happy," said Bin Suroor. "He will just have an easy time of it until the end of the month and then we'll start building him up towards Goodwood and the Leger trial. "He was very keen at Sandown in his race before Ascot but still won. We hoped he would relax a bit better at Ascot yet he still pulled hard. "I have always liked him, that's why I gave him the name Elite Army, and we have time to teach him to settle. "I'm not too worried about the Leger trip as it is not until September so we hope to teach him to settle before then. That will be the key." =================================== Burke considers Odeliz options Karl Burke is seeking optimum conditions for Odeliz as she continues her hunt for Pattern-race glory. The four-year-old has placed in Group Two and Three company on three occasions already this term, and Burke is eager for the Falco filly to get her head in front at that level. Second behind Thistle Bird at Epsom on her most recent outing, she has a couple of options in Germany in the coming days while also entered for the Kilboy Estate Stakes at the Curragh on July 20. "She could go to Ireland next month, but she is ground dependent," Burke said. "She has an entry at Hamburg in Germany next week but I don't think she will go there and she has another entry at Hannover later in the month. "She is ground dependent so hopefully we will get our conditions somewhere. "She's a progressive filly on an upwards curve at the moment and we want to win a Group race with her this season. "If she stays in training next year, which is a possibility, I think she could make up into a Group One filly." ================================== Baker in line for Curragh call George Baker is on standby to ride Thistle Bird in Sunday's Newbridge Silverware Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. Usually partnered by James Doyle, the mount may be available if Khalid Abdullah's retained jockey is claimed to ride Noble Mission in France. Thistle Bird's trainer Roger Charlton has used Baker on the mare before, when she won a handicap at Windsor in 2011. Speaking on his website, www.rogercharlton.com, the trainer said: "Thistle Bird is all dressed up and packed ready to travel to Ireland to run in the Pretty Polly on Sunday. "She will be ridden by either James Doyle or George Baker depending whether Noble Mission runs in France on Sunday. "There are 15 left in the race which include five from Aidan O'Brien's stable, last year's winner Ambivalent and the Irish Guineas winner Marvellous are intended runners, I gather." =================================== Pique misses Plate date Ante-post favourite Pique Sous has not been declared for Saturday's John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. Willie Mullins' grey was a warm order for the valuable handicap after his well-backed success in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot last Saturday. Mullins has also decided not to send top-weight Simenon and now relies only on Lucky Bridle, who was second in a handicap at Cork last month. With Whiplash Willie another missing, Mark Johnston's Oriental Fox will carry top weight ahead of the David O'Meara-trained Repeater. Steve Massey, racing manager for Supreme Racing Club who own Pique Sous, said: "He's just not quite ready. He went back to Ireland straight after the race and he's grand, but it's only a week after running in the longest Flat race of the season. "If he'd had another week that would have been ideal. It's a shame because it's a huge race and it would have been great to run and I think two miles would suit him even more. "Ryan (Moore) said the last furlong felt a long way, especially as he'd pulled so hard, a faster pace would be ideal for him. "I've no idea what's next, that will be down to Willie, as we're jumping men we aren't too familiar with the Flat calendar. We might look at Goodwood. If he'd run, we might have left his next two or three races behind." Others which were prominent in the betting remaining in the line-up at Gosforth Park are Marco Botti's Suegioo, Repeater's stablemate Tropical Beat, the Sir Mark Prescott representative Big Thunder and Angel Gabriel for Richard Fahey. Tony Martin's Irish raider Dark Crusader, the Lucy Wadham-trained Noble Silk and Newmarket winner and potential Melbourne Cup contender Van Percy are others of interest still involved. The final horse to sneak into the final field of 20 is the Jedd O'Keeffe-trained Waterclock. ==================================== Fenton fails to stop prosecution Trainer Philip Fenton has failed to have a prosecution for alleged possession of banned animal remedies, including steroids, thrown out of court. Fenton is facing eight charges over treatments and medicines found at his yard, South Lodge, Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary, by veterinary inspectors in January 2012. Judge Terence Finn dismissed claims by defence lawyers that the charges were not being taken correctly as regulations had been amended between the date of the inspection and when summonses were issued in October 2013. The prosecution is being brought in the name of Ireland's Agriculture Minister for infringements of rules on animal remedies. Judge Finn ruled that the case should proceed. "In this instance, in conclusion, I'm satisfied that the minister has the right to prosecute in respect of proceedings that are being taken," he said. Fenton, 49, attended the ruling at Cashel District Court but did not make any comment. The judge added: "I am satisfied that the law in relation to the minister is well settled. "We have reached a point here where the defence need to consider the ramifications of the court ruling and the matter will have to proceed, albeit somewhat slowly, but there are some important issues to consider. "I don't intend taking anything at a gallop - if you will excuse the pun." The case will be mentioned at Carrick-on-Suir District Court on September 4. Defence lawyers suggested at a previous hearing that the matter may end up in the High Court at a future date. Eight charges had been brought against Fenton including alleged possession of Nitrotain and Ilium Stanabolic and prescription medicines including Engemycin 10%, Neomycin Penicillin, Marbocyl 10%. No plea has been entered. ======================================= Eclipse target for True True Story has the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday week as his next objective after being taken out of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the declaration stage. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor feels 10 furlongs at Sandown will be ideal for his charge and with rain forecast for the Curragh before the Derby, he thinks True Story has more chance of getting his preferred fast ground next weekend. Bin Suroor also confirmed the Feilden Stakes winner will run in a visor. "He's not going to Ireland, he's going for the Eclipse," said the Godolphin trainer. "I think the 10 furlongs will suit him and they are forecast rain in Ireland so he wouldn't get his ground. "The Eclipse will be fine for him and he's going to run in a visor for the first time. "We worked him in one and he worked better in one, so we'll try that. "Sandown will suit him very well I think." =================================== BHA tightens steroids policy The British Horseracing Authority has announced details of its tougher policy on anabolic steroids, including a 14-month ban for any horses found to have been administered the drugs. High-profile cases involving Mahmood Al Zarooni and Gerard Butler hit the headlines last year, and the BHA has strengthened its stance with a zero-tolerance approach on steroids. New minimum standards were published by International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) in October 2013 but following research and consultation, the BHA has outlined its official policy. Under the rules a horse must not be given an anabolic steroid at any point in its life and any that are will be banned from training for 12 months and ineligible to start in any race in Britain for 14 months. All British-bred horses must be registered with Weatherbys within 12 months of birth, a period which will be phased to six months in two years, and they must be available for testing at any time after registration. Permanently imported horses must be registered with Weatherbys within three months of arrival in Britain and be accompanied by a sample that shows no evidence of anabolic steroid usage. Horses from Ireland, France and Germany which have spent 12 months under their similar policies will be exempt while runners from those countries will be treated as British horses and sampled as per the standard testing policy. The BHA ruled all other foreign runners must be in Britain a minimum of 14 days in advance of their intended race for post-arrival sampling and analysis, the results of which will be received prior to the horse running. Paul Bittar, chief executive of BHA, said: "The need for an international position that sets robust minimum standards on use of anabolic steroids in horseracing was one that was pushed by BHA and a number of other key racing jurisdictions last year and resulted in the IFHA adopted position. "The enhanced, zero-tolerance policy announced today, which exceeds the international minimum standard, has the objective of ensuring that British racing remains at the forefront of tackling an issue that ranks amongst the biggest threats faced by any world sport. "It is intended to ensure that the industry, racing and betting public can be reassured that all races which take place on British soil are done so on a level playing field. It is also hoped that this will be another step towards global harmonisation across the sport and that the leadership role BHA has adopted on this issue can result in those nations that have not yet adopted the minimum standards following suit. Our previous policy already met the minimum standards, and today's announcement goes further, ensuring British racing retains its pre-eminent position in respect of how drug use is regulated within the sport. "After a challenging 16 months, as a result of the actions taken already by several nations, the sport globally is now in a much better place when it comes to the regulation of anabolic steroids." The intention is for the policy to be implemented by 1 January 2015, pending the implementation of the necessary rule changes. ====================================== Varian desperate for Curragh rain According to the bookmakers Roger Varian's Kingston Hill is the only credible rival to Australia in Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh but the trainer would be "very reluctant to run" on fast ground. Australia beat Kingston Hill by just over a length in the Investec Derby earlier this month and there are a few who believe the more conventional nature of the County Kildare track will suit the Newmarket raider more than Epsom's twists and turns. However, despite already having made the journey over the Irish Sea, Varian has reiterated that he will not risk the Racing Post Trophy winner on ground that he thinks is too fast. "He's gone over there today, he should be there by now I think," said Varian. "I think the weather tonight and into tomorrow morning is key. They are forecast 8-12mm of rain and hopefully they get that and a bit more. "I hope the ground is at least good by Saturday. "I would be very reluctant to run him on anything described as faster than good." Australia and Kingston Hill are two of seven declared runners. Aidan O'Brien's choicely-bred Australia fell just short when third in a red-hot renewal of the Qipco 2000 Guineas but put the record straight at Epsom. Australia is one of four runners for O'Brien with Geoffrey Chaucer, Kingfisher and Orchestra all taking their chances in a race the Ballydoyle handler has dominated in recent years. O'Brien won seven successive renewals before Jim Bolger's Trading Leather snapped his sequence last year. Dermot Weld has declared Derrinstown Derby Trial winner Fascinating Rock, who finished eighth at Epsom, but he would also like to see a little more ease in the ground. Speaking at Naas on Wednesday evening, Weld said: "It's pretty ground dependent. Hopefully they get plenty of rain - it's pretty firm at the moment so they'll have to get the rain or water it sufficiently. "I understand they have a difficult decision as rain is forecast so they might not want to water but I'm sure they'll get it right. "He's in great form. He hasn't been burning up the gallops or anything since Epsom because I haven't asked him to, he's just had an easy time. "If he runs, I'm convinced we'll see the horse who won his Group races in Ireland rather than the one that ran at Epsom." The only other runner is John Oxx's Ponfeigh. RaceBets make Australia 9-1 to break St Jovite's winning distance record of 12 lengths in 1992. The firm's spokesman Joseph Burke said: "It has been one-way traffic in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, with every single horse in the race drifting with the exception of Australia who has hardened to 3-10 favourite and it appears to be simply a matter of how far he wins by. "With that in mind, the winning distance specials for Australia have also proven popular and he has shortened to 6-4 to win by three lengths or more and to 9-4 to win by five lengths or more. "With Aidan O'Brien chasing his eighth Irish Derby winner in the past nine years and supplying four of the seven runners, we quote him at 16-1 to supply the first three home, a feat he has achieved as recently as 2010 and 2011."

Newcastle, 26 June 2014
3.30, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference approximately half a furlong out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, BARAWEEZ (IRE), ridden by Dale Swift, had interfered with DANCE AND DANCE (IRE), placed second, ridden by Richard Kingscote. They found the interference was accidental and had improved BARAWEEZ (IRE)’s placing. They placed DANCE AND DANCE (IRE) first and BARAWEEZ (IRE) second.
4.00, fourth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, KNIGHTLY ESCAPADE, ridden by P.J. McDonald and trained by Brian Ellison, compared with its previous run at Doncaster on 25 April 2014 where the gelding finished seventh of nine, beaten approximately 35 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding was better suited by the faster ground.
4.30, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by David Nolan, the rider of the winner, GABRIAL THE THUG (FR), from approximately one and a half furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level and down the shoulder in the forehand position. The Stewards suspended Nolan for 4 days as follows: Thursday 10, Monday 14, Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 July 2014.
26/06/2014
Carlisle, 26 June 2014
2.10, first race
The Starter reported that WE’LL DEAL AGAIN trained by Michael Easterby, was reluctant to enter the Stalls. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
2.40, second race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, LEXINGTON ROSE, ridden by Royston Ffrench and trained by Bryan Smart, compared with its previous run at Nottingham on 19 April 2014, where the filly finished ninth of nine beaten 15½ lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that LEXINGTON ROSE, had benefitted from a short break. They ordered LEXINGTON ROSE to be routine tested.
26/06/2014
Great Yarmouth, 26 June 2014
2.20, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Ted Durcan, the rider of HOLD FIRM, had appeared to strike his horse during the loading process. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident they accepted his explanation that the colt had been reluctant to enter the stalls and that he had used the whip as a measure to try and coax HOLD FIRM to move forward.
2.50, second race
The Starter reported that REAFFIRMED (IRE), trained by Ed Vaughan, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TYRSAL (IRE), ridden by Andrea Atzeni and trained by Robert Eddery, compared with its previous run at Nottingham on 10 May 2014 where the gelding finished sixth of eight beaten 15 ¼ lengths. They noted the trainer’s rerpresentative's explanation that the gelding was better suited by the good to firm ground.
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Clerk of the Scales that Seb Sanders, the rider of PALACE PRINCESS (FR), placed fourth, had weighed in at 9st 0lb having weighed out at 8st 12lb. They interviewed the rider, the representative of Ed Dunlop, the trainer, and the Clerk of the Scales. They further found him in breach of Rule (D) 47.3 in that he deliberately attempted to weigh in without a girth and suspended him for 3 days as follows: Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 July 2014.
5.20, seventh race
The Stewards noted that DUMBFOUNDED (FR), placed second, had interfered with NO SUCH NUMBER, placed fourth, approaching the final furlong but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved DUMBFOUNDED (FR)’s placing.
26/06/2014
Leicester, 26 June 2014
6.10, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Racheal Kneller, the rider of ST PAUL’S SQUARE (IRE), on leaving the stalls. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the colt stumbling, and unseating the rider, as the stalls opened. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved the Stewards took no further action.
6.40, third race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, ADORE, ridden by Ryan Moore, and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, compared with its previous run at Goodwood on 23 May 2014, where the filly finished 6th of 6, beaten 20 lengths. That will be the key."

Clever Cookie is reported to be firmly on track for next month's 55th John Smith's Cup at York. Clever Cookie (left) dead-heated on his last visit to York The six-year-old was a Grade Two hurdles winner at Kelso back in March and has made a seamless switch to the Flat, winning a Doncaster maiden before landing a competitive handicap on the Knavesmire in May. Clever Cookie subsequently dead-heated with Ralston Road in a Listed event at the end of last month, although trainer Peter Niven expressed concerns about the one-mile-six-furlong trip after that shared success when talking in terms of the Ebor. He said: "He's fine and on course for the John Smith's Cup next month, all being well. "It's been quite hard mixing a winter campaign into a summer campaign and I don't know that it was the case that he didn't stay last time. "You don't win a Listed race and not stay, but perhaps he just wasn't quite at his best. "I gave him a couple of easy weeks and he's back on track now." Clever Cookie features among the initial 37 entries for the Juddmonte International at York in August. While a crack at the 10-furlong feature appears optimistic, connections believe it is worth giving themselves the option. Niven added: "Unfortunately you have to enter very early for those kind of races and if you're not in it, you can't win it. "If he was going to a black type horse I'd probably prefer to work our way up, but we will see what happens as it's a while away yet."

George Baker is on standby to ride Thistle Bird in Sunday's Newbridge Silverware Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. Thistle Bird may have a new pilot on Sunday Usually partnered by James Doyle, the mount may be available if Khalid Abdullah's retained jockey is claimed to ride Noble Mission in France. "There are 15 left in the race which include five from Aidan O'Brien's stable, last year's winner Ambivalent and the Irish Guineas winner Marvellous are intended runners, I gather."

================================= 19:45 Friday 27th June Racing Tips - 27/06/2014
There's a lot of rain around today but it looks as though Newcastle is spared and the ground should stay good to firm. A good Listed race is of interest and Pelerin looks a very likely scorer. She was unlucky last time at Newbury and Martin Harley rides her with bags of confidence, which I like, though it probably cost her last time. The winner that day was rated 99 and there's nothing that good here. It's not the strongest of renewals and Pelerin has got better with every start this season. 13/8 won't last long. Magic of Reality is probably next best as, though I like Lily Rules, I'm not sure she's quite good enough at this level. She'll give her running though. Newcastle 19.10 - Pelerin 3pt win
I can't split 2 in the 5 furlong handicap, mainly because I've been waiting for Barnet Fair to return to fast ground. The fact that he has since been acquired by sprint maestro David Nicholls is a bonus and am surprised he's 12/1. He is just 1lb above his last win and made solid improvement from earlier in the season when 6th in the Dash at 25/1 last time, doing best of those drawn low. The ground was quicker than listed that day and he'll love this afternoon's conditions. I do think the favourite Algar Lad will win however, and he can't go unbacked at 5/1. He won so easily last time on just his 2nd start for David O'Meara and looks well worth a shot in this company. The winning time was good and a repeat of that will see him go close even with his 11lb penalty. The pace is low which is a slight concern but there's plenty of it and I'm not too worried about the 2 selections being dropped in off the good gallop, as is their want. Newcastle 19.45 - Algar Lad 2pt win Newcastle 19.45 - Barnet Fair 1pt e/w

Lad leads Criterion charge
Denis Coakley is enjoying a fine season and the Berkshire-based trainer looks to keep up the good work with stable stalwart Gabriel's Lad in the Bet365 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
The £65,000 seven-furlong event has attracted five previous Group winners and two others that have already succeeded at Listed level, plus last season's Ayr Gold Cup winner Highland Colori.
Gabriel's Lad arrives on the back of a career-best effort in the Victoria Cup at Ascot, where he defied top weight in some style.
Coakley, whose only previous Group Three success came seven years ago, landed another prestigious handicap with Miss Marjurie at Epsom on Derby day and is within £3,000 of breaking his personal best prize-money haul with six months of the season still remaining.
The trainer said: "Gabriel's Lad seems in good order and has been working well. Hopefully he is up to this step up in class and he certainly should give a good account of himself.
"He is a course and distance winner on good to firm ground, although he does need a good pace to run at. If we get some rain that would be in his favour too, though it might suit Top Notch Tonto even better, as he is a very good horse on soft ground.
"Gabriel's Lad obviously clicked with George Baker at Ascot and I can't see why they won't click again. It would be great to have another Group winner."
Highland Colori invariably goes well at Newmarket, winning twice on the July course and once on the Rowley Mile. Andrew Balding's charge has acquitted himself well since stepping out of handicaps, and two outings this season have hinted at better to come.
Balding said: "He's in great form. He's got good course form there, so I hope he runs a decent race."
Penitent, Garswood and Gregorian have already tasted victory in Group Two contests, while Indignant, a last-time-out Listed scorer, will be bidding to give the Richard Hannon stable a fourth consecutive win in the race. She steps up in class having beaten stablemate Professor in the Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury.
Hannon told his website: "She is equally effective over six and seven furlongs, and Pat Dobbs rode a lovely waiting race from the front when they beat Professor for a Listed prize at Salisbury last time. The runner-up ran a stormer with a big weight in the Wokingham, so Indignant deserves a crack at the big boys."
Tawhid is smart on his day, winning the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup at Newbury last season. Saeed bin Suroor's runner has been seen just once this term, when seventh to Penitent in the Timeform Jury Stakes at Haydock. He is ridden for the first time by Harry Bentley, who has a fine strike-rate for the Godolphin trainer.
Bentley said in his racinguk.com blog: "I've ridden 10 winners from 33 rides for Saeed bin Suroor and hopefully that good record can continue with Tawhid.
" As the season progresses and the number of Godolphin runners increases, I do tend to pick up the odd spare for the stable, which I am always very grateful for. When I am not needed by Qatar Racing my boss, Sheikh Fahad, has always been very relaxed about whom I ride for - whether it's Godolphin or anyone else.
"Tawhid has won at this level before - when taking the Horris Hill as a two-year-old - and won a Listed race at the end of last season, so is clearly capable of winning a race like this."
========================================== Murphy breaks new ground
Discussiontofollow heads Mike Murphy's first racing foray to Ireland when he bids for glory in the Paddy Power Scurry at the Curragh.
The lightly raced four-year-old has not been seen since finishing a close third at Windsor in April, having collected in his first three starts on Polytrack after joining Murphy's Bedfordshire stable during the winter.
"We've had runners in Germany before but never in Ireland, so it's exciting," said the trainer, who will be taking on the likes of last year's winner Burn The Boats from the Ger Lyons yard.
"Usually the ground is softer in Ireland than Britain but it's looking like it will be quick, over a nice six furlongs.
"He's just not had his ground in England, but his last run at Windsor, which was on good ground, is working out well with a couple that finished around him going on to win.
"They've had some rain but the trainers over there are still calling it rattling quick ground, so hopefully he can run a nice race."
The betting became wide-open when ante-post favourite Great Minds was not declared, and another British trainer full of hope is Eric Alston.
His ultra-consistent Barkston Ash has not finished out of the first three in five starts on grass during this campaign and will break from stall 23 of 25.
Alston said: "A bit of rain there is a good thing for him, and it looks like he has a decent draw. He's in great order, and he has been all year. I think this is the first time I've been over since I had (top-class sprinter) Reverence, so I'm looking forward to it."
David Marnane has a very strong hand in this valuable six-furlong dash and the Tipperary-based handler said: "We've three good chances, but none of them have great draws.
"Seanie hadn't run since the middle of December so I was delighted with his run back at Navan last month. He travelled particularly well and has been running very consistently, even beating my other horse Jamesie last October at Dundalk, but I think he's better on turf.
"Harry Trotter was fourth in a messy race at Tipperary the other day. I wasn't disappointed really but only the first three ever got involved. He was staying on well at the end and is a tough horse.
"Zalty has first-time blinkers. He hasn't the best draw but I think a race like this will suit as he'll have the chance to finish through horses."
======================================== Maarek sparkling for Sapphire
Evanna McCutcheon is waiting to see if she made a worthwhile decision in keeping Maarek on ice for a week ahead of Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh.
One of Europe's best sprinters, Maarek missed Royal Ascot because the ground was too quick for him, but this has already been a rewarding season after he won the Duke Of York Stakes and finished second to Diamond Jubilee winner Slade Power over the Curragh's six furlongs last month.
Maarek, who has the Prix de l'Abbaye on his extensive CV, looks the stand-out performer in this Group Three event over the minimum trip.
"He's in fantastic form and I'm just desperate to give him a run," said McCutcheon.
"He was primed 100 per cent for Ascot, but the ground was too quick. It's quick enough at the Curragh, not as quick as Ascot, but there's been a bit of rain and hopefully there'll be some more.
"I'd like to get him out again, as we're looking at the July Cup after this."
Extortionist has a quick turnaround after striking at Newmarket last weekend and Olly Stevens' three-year-old is one of two British raiders, along with Monsieur Joe.
Reggie Roberts' Timeless Call just held off Jamesie in the recent Midsummer Sprint at Cork, and the latter's trainer David Marnane is optimistic about his runner making some improvement.
He said: "We were delighted with the run as it was his first one since coming back from Dubai. He didn't have the best draw in the world, but was closing all the way to the line.
"We had him in at Newcastle, but decided to go for this instead. His next aim is a Group Three at Newbury (Hackwood Stakes). It's a day where Malih Al Basti is sponsoring and we're keen to support as he's one of our big owners."
==================================== Capp on track for Railway
Cappella Sansevero heads a quartet of two-year-olds bidding for Royal Ascot compensation in the GAIN Railway Stakes at the Curragh.
Ger Lyons' colt got the closest of any in the field to success last week when he flew home late and fast to take second behind The Wow Signal in the Coventry Stakes.
He had won his three previous starts, including the Listed Marble Hill Stakes at the Kildare track, and was bought by Qatar Racing for the considerable sum of £1,300,000 at the Goffs London sale on the eve of Ascot.
Peter Chapple-Hyam is trying Norfolk Stakes third Ahlan Emarati over an extra furlong, while Aidan O'Brien's War Envoy and Richard Hannon's Kool Kompany were ninth and 12th respectively but not far behind Cappella Sansevero in the Coventry.
"It's not ideal to be running so soon but it's the way the programme book has mapped out," said Lyons.
"I've not done much with him since Ascot but he seems well in himself. Peter Chapple-Hyam's horse, Aidan's and Richard Hannon's were all there as well at Ascot, and we'll find out what toll it has taken out of them.
"If he runs to the level he has shown, then he should take a lot of beating."
It will be a big occasion for Rathangan trainer Michael O'Callaghan, who fields Rapid Applause and I Will Excel, who both avoided Royal Ascot.
"It's unusual for me to have two runners in a race like this, but if you have two nice horses, why not run them," he said.
"Rapid Applause won very nicely at Cork back in April and had a setback after that. Whether he'll need the run, we'll find out here, but he has strengthened up for a bit of a break. He's a very fast horse with a natural cruising speed.
"I Will Excel ran very well first time at Naas to finish close behind Kool Kompany and with natural improvement, you'd hope he'd be right up there.
"I thought he'd improve the next time when he went to Leopardstown, but he got a bit far back behind the winner, Battle Of Marathon.
"I think a stiff six at the Curragh will suit, and we'll be looking to make more use of him."
As well as Joseph O'Brien's mount War Envoy, his father runs Battle Of Marathon, who was two and three-quarter lengths ahead of I Will Excel at Leopardstown.
==================================== Words shines on Curragh bow
Words is set for an immediate step up in class after she made an impressive racecourse debut as Aidan O'Brien landed a double on the eve-of-Derby card at the Curragh.
The daughter of Dansili was sent off a 3-1 chance in the seven-furlong Tom Crean's Irish Lager Fillies Maiden and did enough to earn quotes for the Oaks at Epsom and the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket next season.
Joseph O'Brien's mount made a lackadaisical start, but she slowly moved through the gears and surged down the outside to lead a furlong from home. In the end she was good value for her one-length defeat of fellow newcomer Raydara.
The Ballydoyle handler, who will saddle the odds-on favourite Australia in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, said: "She's a nice filly and we're very happy with her. The mammy (Moonstone, winner of the 2008 Irish Oaks) was good. She came from a nice bit back and you'd have to be delighted with the run.
"We'll probably look for a Listed or Group race now - probably the Debutante Stakes (Curragh, August 24)."
================================= Moo makes hay at Doncaster
Marco Botti's Moohaarib made a mockery of his opening handicap mark by taking the feature Betdaq 3 per cent Commission Handicap at Doncaster.
Given his dam, Evita, is a half-brother to Group One winners Rewilding and Dar Re Mi, it is no surprise Moohaarib cost 230,000 guineas, and after running with promise in two 10-furlong maidens, the Oasis Dream colt opened his account dropped back down to a mile at Ripon.
Martin Harley always looked confident on the 3-1 shot, who was given an inaugural rating of 85, and he was not hard pressed in beating Championship by three-quarters of a length. The 2-1 favourite Knavery was third.
The jockey said: "It wasn't a strong maiden he won at Ripon, but we'd always liked him at home. The drop back in trip has helped him and he travelled really well all the way. He showed a nice turn of foot at Ripon and again today. Marco's horses are just hitting form and that is great timing for me."
Jamie Spencer endured a frustrating Royal Ascot in the Qatar Racing colours but he wore them to victory on Clive Cox's Fruity (7-1) in the Betdaq The Sports Betting Exchange EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Fourth on her debut on soft ground, she showed a smart change of gear on a much faster surface and comfortably held the Richard Hannon newcomer Shahah by a length and a quarter
Cox reported: "Jamie said she was much happier on a sound surface. She has a wonderful temperament and is a joy to train. She has the scope to go up in trip but we'll just get her home and see what is available for her."
The visually most impressive winner was Charlie Appleby's Hawkesbury (4-5 favourite) in the Betdaq-sponsored Novice Stakes. D espite there being only four in the race they split into two groups, but it soon became apparent William Buick was holding on to a double handful and w ithout any pressure, he pulled seven lengths clear of Russian Punch.
Buick said: "It looked a competitive little race on paper so to win it like that was pleasing. He's won it very well, but he's still learning. You'd like to think there's a bit more to come."
The jockey doubled up riding Award (5-4 favourite) for his boss, John Gosden, in the first division of the Betdaq 200 Free Bet Games Bonus Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
He looked a sitting duck as Paul Hanagan cajoled the awkward-looking Muhawalah into the lead inside the final furlong, but Roger Varian's charge threw his head up in the air, allowing Award to get back up and win by a neck.
A treble looked on the cards for Buick when he went clear in the second division on Oh Star, but she was worn down by James Given's Galactic Heroine (11-1), who powered down the centre of the track under Graham Lee.
Chris Wall's good record with fillies was improved when Katawi (100-30 favourite) spreadeagled the opposition in the Betdaq 25 No Lose Free Bet Handicap. Having sat close to the pace, George Baker pressed the button over a furlong out and the race was over. She won by an eased-down two lengths.
The jockey said: "She's always worn the hood, but it obviously helps. Chris has a very good track record with fillies so she's in good hands. We didn't go quick so it paid dividends to be up near the front, that might have been why it looked maybe easier than it could have done."
Eagle Rock (13-8) denied Hallstatt by a head in the Betdaq No Premium Charge Handicap, while Innocent Touch (15-8 favourite) just held on in the concluding Cash Out On The Betdaq+ App Handicap.
================================== France Galop confirms Paris death
Lesstalk In Paris is listed as dead by French racing authority France Galop - a week after her excellent second in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, t he daughter of Cape Cross won her first two starts as a two-year-old before finishing second in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp.
Lesstalk In Paris also landed the Prix de la Grotte on her comeback and the only disappointing run in her six-race career was in the French Guineas.
================================= Appleby expects to see real Danzeno
Michael Appleby expects Danzeno to prove himself a smart sprinter in the Betfred TV Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on Saturday.
The three-year-old was sent off favourite for a competitive handicap at York last time out, but he could finish only ninth. However, the trainer believes he has a valid excuse for that display and is of the opinion he is back in the sort of form that saw him spreadeagle his rivals at Newmarket in April, earning an 11lb rise from the handicapper.
"He should have been withdrawn the last day. He was very upset in the stalls and banged his head, I wouldn't be surprised if he was concussed. Andrew (Mullen) said he ran like he felt he was concussed, he was all over the shop," said Appleby.
"I know he's a very good horse and hopefully he'll show it. He's got a three-year-old allowance which will be a big help and he's a big horse anyway, so I'm not worried about him running against older horses. The going should be fine for him and he has a lot in his favour."
Another horse stepping out of handicap company is Tim Pitt's Sir Maximilian, who missed the cut in the Wokingham last week by just one. He was a very impressive winner at Chester first time up this season, but that was in soft ground and Pitt is slightly worried the going may get too quick.
He told his website: " There are only seven runners and while it is a small but select field, it looks very competitive nonetheless. My immediate concern would be the ground, as he has proven he's a better horse with some give. But at the minute he's all dressed up with very few places to go. We'll take him there and then take a view - I'd hope he'll be putting more water on.
"The Wokingham was always plan A but when that didn't work out we had to look to plans B, C and D. He's also in a conditions race at Hamilton on Tuesday and if the ground at Newcastle got very quick that could still be an option.
"I have maintained since Chester that he's a good horse and one that could climb the ladder into Pattern company, but I'd envisaged running in a few more handicaps before taking that leap.
"This is a big bridge for him to cross and he's got to run to a mark of 100-plus just to be competitive, never mind win. But it's still a horse race and there's sometimes only one way to find out how good horses are and that's by letting them compete at higher levels.
"We might have it to prove on the ratings but while there are some very tough and consistent sprinters in there, I'm not sure if they'd be winning handicaps off their current marks. Saturday will be tough for Max, but he's a horse myself and Stevie (Donohoe) have got a lot of faith in."
A late absentee from the Wokingham was William Haggas's three-year-old Saayerr, who was close behind Shifting Power in the Free Handicap in April, form which has worked out well.
Mass Rally would be a popular winner for local trainer Michael Dods, but his jockey Paul Mulrennan is praying for rain.
He said: "I think we'll be doing a rain dance, it's no secret he's better with a bit of juice in the ground. I know they'll be watering but we could do with a shower or two."
Tim Easterby's consistent Body And Soul and James Tate's Ruwaiyan are other contenders, with the field completed by the David Barron-trained veteran Hitchens.
Rider Graham Gibbons said: "You wouldn't know how he'd run. He will like the ground and if he turns up he'd have a great chance. We're just letting him come to himself this time, as he gets older it's taking longer to iron him out."
==================================== Koukash duo renew rivalry in Plate
Suegioo and Angel Gabrial do battle in the John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday after giving Dr Marwan Koukash a memorable one-two in the Chester Cup at his beloved Roodee.
Angel Gabrial is 1lb better off with his old adversary for a half-length defeat and this time has the services of 3lb claimer George Chaloner, who showed the value of his allowance by winning the Wokingham on Baccarat at Royal Ascot last Saturday.
Trainer Richard Fahey said: "We're happy with him and we'll have to see what happens. There shouldn't be much between him and Suegioo. We're pleased with the draw (one), everything's good and we're taking 3lb off with George."
Suegioo is trained in Newmarket by Marco Botti, who could not have his charge in better shape.
The handler said: "He's in good form and has been training well. All's gone well since he won at Chester. We've had the chance to freshen him up and give him a short break. I'm looking forward to it.
"The track should suit him, the ground shouldn't be an issue. It's a tough race. He's gone up a few pounds for winning the Chester Cup, but he's in good order.
"He's progressing and we always thought this year could be his best year. The horse has been gelded so, in a way, he is a little more straightforward than he was as a three-year-old. He stays and he's versatile with the ground. He's doesn't mind good ground and he handles soft ground."
Van Percy is a progressive young stayer who steps up to two miles for the first time, though h is future lies in Australia after a half-share in him was sold to OTI Racing, based Down Under.
However, the four-year-old will continue to race in this country with Kingsclere handler Andrew Balding for now.
The trainer said: "Everything's right. I couldn't be happier with him except for the draw (stall 22). It makes it very tough. If he gets a bit of luck and gets in not too wide, he should run a big race.
"The owners have sold a half share to OTI. He's got a long way to go to be in contention for a Melbourne Cup, but the smaller cup races they have over there he's ideal for. He'll go off to Australia at the end of the year.
"He goes on any ground. This is his first try at two miles, but the way he stayed on at Newmarket over one mile six suggests it won't be a problem."
================================== Australia chasing Derby double
Australia will emulate his parents if he manages to follow up his win at Epsom in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh tomorrow.
A son of the brilliant Galileo out of Ouija Board, he is bred to win Classics and after falling just short in the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket he lived up to his promise in the Investec Derby, never looking in any trouble.
Both Galileo in 2001 and Oaks heroine Ouija Board three years later managed to pull off the English-Irish double, and Australia is a long odds-on shot with the bookmakers to provide trainer Aidan O'Brien with his 11th win in the Curragh showpiece.
Joseph O'Brien is the jockey who gets to ride him and is excited about the weekend. He said: "He travelled great and did everything well at Epsom. I'm really looking forward to it."
The O'Briens have been on weather-watch and will not run the star of the show if there is too much give in the ground, but d espite plenty of rain being forecast on Thursday night, only five millimetres fell and the ground remained good to firm.
Speaking at Tipperary on Thursday night, O'Brien snr said: "We all know he wants fast ground. There's a lot of rain forecast for Saturday morning. A lot can change. We want to run him, but he doesn't want soft ground."
Curragh manager Paul Hensey said: "We had just under five millimetres, but the going remains good to firm. There are a few showers around on Friday and we could catch some of them, they'd be welcome actually.
"If we didn't catch any of them we might put a splash of water on. There's been quite some discrepancy in the forecasts this week.
"We're in a good place at the moment, it's a fine balance and we certainly wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone by putting too much on, but if the rain fell we can do nothing about that.
"It would be terrific to see the big two face each other again. Kingston Hill is already here and looks magnificent."
Kingston Hill was the only horse to seriously give the winner a race at Epsom, but is the opposite of Australia in that his team want rain, as trainer Roger Varian would be reluctant to run his stable star on anything faster than good ground.
Jockey Andrea Atzeni would love him to run, but understands it would be in the horse's best interests not to race on ground too fast.
He said: "I'm really looking forward to the race, it's a big weekend for me. He probably won't run if it's too quick, though. He's a horse for the future, but it would be great if he did run.
"I think he'd have a great chance if he did. It is hard to say he's going to win with a horse like Australia in the field, but you'd have to think he'd be thereabouts. He must have a massive chance.
"It's not all about tomorrow with him, there are lots of races after tomorrow that he can run in over 10 and 12 furlongs. I've no doubt he's got the pace for 10 furlongs, but the ground is so important to him. It's still good to firm there now and it's been so dry of late it would take a lot of rain to change it."
Dermot Weld's Fascinating Rock made great strides earlier in the season, winning a maiden, the Ballysax Stakes and being awarded the Derrinstown Derby Trial, but he suffered a rough passage at Epsom and came home eighth.
He is another who will not be at home on fast ground, with Weld stating he would not run unless he felt the ground was safe.
John Oxx has never been known for running horses in big races he thinks have little chance, so the fact he has declared Ponfeigh may be noteworthy. He has won his last two races like an improving colt, but steps up markedly in trip.
"He is a horse we have always liked and that is why we have kept him in the race. He had a bit of a setback in April but he has got over that now. He has had two quick runs, but he appears to have taken those races well," said Oxx.
"Ponfeigh has a terrific turn of foot and hopefully the step up in trip won't catch him out. The race is worth a lot of money and it is great to have a horse good enough to run in it."
Geoffrey Chaucer, Orchestra and Kingfisher are others representing the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable.

RACE RATINGS.
Race Ratings Saturday, 28 June - 3.30 Newmarket Bet365 Criterion Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) 7f .
15-13 Eton Forever 28 7 Roger Varian Fairly lightly-raced last season, but has gone well this term over distance, winning a Listed race at Leicester and was then a fair but held-third in the Group 3 Jury Stakes behind Penitent. Decent form, but looks exposed. Good to soft or softer ground would help. RATING 98 27161 Fanoos 33 5 Dr Jon Scargill Daughter of Dutch Art who progressed nicely in handicaps last season. Defied ca- reer-high mark last time to land a 7f hand- icap at Leicester. A lot more on her plate here, though. RATING 94 4-6261 Free Wheeling 119 6 Saeed bin Suroor A bit taken on trust here, as stable's horses have historically taken a little time to get up to speed on British debut after a campaign in Dubai in the spring. Ran well during that period, winning a 7f handicap on final start. Formerly trained in Australia, ran respectably at this level in Britain last season without winning, and looks one more with place claims, rather than win claims. RATING 95 95-751 Gabriel ́s Lad 49 5 Denis Coakley Very good 6f/7f handicapper, winning the Victoria Cup last time out. That clear-cut win rated his best-ever run, so a run at this level looks logical enough, and as one who han- dles slow or quick ground, he may be one to watch for each-way backers. RATING 99 163-54 Garswood 28 4 Richard Fahey Kicked off last season with a fine win in the Free Handicap at Newmarket, finished a fair seventh in the Guineas, was fourth in the Jersey Stakes and then won the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Rounded off season with good third in the Group 1 Foret at Longchamp's Arc meeting, but disappointing form in two starts this season, including over distance last time, leaves him with something to prove. Needs cut in the ground too. RATING 98 0-2129 Glen Moss 7 5 David Brown Very good handicapper and led home the group that raced on the far side of the Wok- ingham Stakes last Saturday. Won some good handicaps last season and was sec- ond to Gabrial's Lad in the Victoria Cup, so has something to find on that form. Not ruled out, but needs to show a little more to enter win calculations. RATING 96 1386-5 Gregorian 22 5 John Gosden Might have just needed the run on his sea- sonal debut, when fifth in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom Downs last time. Previous form includes Group 1 places in the St James's Palace Stakes and Prix Jean Prat, and also won the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes last season. If back up to full speed for this race, should be the one to beat on ground expected to be the fast side of good. RATING 100 412-45 Highland Colori 26 6 Andrew Balding Progressive handicapper over last three seasons, winning the Ayr Gold Cup last September before stepping up to Listed company and finishing second at Doncaster. Seems fairly versatile in terms of ground preference, and should enjoy step back up to 7f after being outpaced over 6f in a small-field Listed race last time. Interesting. RATING 97 029-01 Indignant 13 4 Richard Hannon Gently progressive in handicaps last sea- son, and can be forgiven last-but-one finish on debut this season, when having prob- lems in running. Left those issues behind when beating Professor in a Listed race at Salisbury last time, with the runner-up fin- ishing second in the Wokingham last week- end. That's good form, and stable having a great season, but there are a few other en- trants in this race who have already proven themselves at a higher level. RATING 96 9-6825 Leitir Mor 9 4 J S Bolger Group 1-placed form at two behind Dawn Approach didn't translate into top-class form last season, but this son of Holy Roman Emperor did win a Group 3 over dis- tance at The Curragh last summer, and has not been beaten far in his last two starts, in Listed and Group company. Respected, but others preferred. RATING 97 03617 Penitent 22 8 David O ́Meara Stable having fine season and this former Lincoln winner has been in good form, winning the Group 3 Jury Stakes before being beaten in the Diomed Stakes (behind Gregorian). Has good each-way claims. RATING 98 1416-7 Rerouted 170 6 M F De Kock Group 3-winning juvenile for Barry Hills four years ago, and has developed into a good handicapper for his present trainer, if only having raced once in the past 14 months. Will need to be at top of his game for this first run in six months, if he is to enter serious reckoning. RATING 95 2341-7 Tawhid 28 4 Saeed bin Suroor Third in the Jersey Stakes last season and not beaten far by Gregorian in the Hungerford Stakes either. That campaign included a Listed win over distance on soft ground, but form suggests quicker ground won't be a problem and things didn't go to plan last time on seasonal debut. Could go well at a price. RATING 97 12-463 Top Notch Tonto 30 4 Brian Ellison Finished second in the Group 1 QEII Stakes last season, but has been held on all three starts this time around, so has been a little disappointing. Drop back in trip may help, if only in hope rather than expectation. RATING 95 ====================================
RACING NEWS.
Popular stayer Tiger Cliff sadly collapsed and died of a heart attack after finishing fourth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot. The five-year- old collapsed at the end of the two-and- three-quarter-mile stamina test that concluded the meeting. Tiger Cliff, owned by a syndicate headed by Henry Ponsonby, enjoyed his finest hour when winning the Ebor at York last August, when trained by Lady Cecil. Tiger Cliff moved to Alan King's Barbury Castle stables in the autumn with the intention of going hurdling. That had been put on hold and he stuck to the Flat, finishing third in the Yorkshire Cup and fifth in the Henry II Stakes before running at Royal Ascot. Channel 4 has said that they are proud of the job they did at Royal Ascot, despite dwindling viewing figures throughout the week. Aver- age viewing figures are reported to have fallen from 658,200 over the five days in 2013 to 583,400 this year, with Saturday's final day attracting 605,000 viewers in com- parison with over 820,000 last year. Superstar filly, Treve, is currently undergoing a series of tests following her shock defeat in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. Last year's brilliant Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner could only finish third behind The Fugue on Wednes- day, having lost her unbeaten record at the hands of Cirrus Des Aigles in the Prix Ganay on her seasonal debut. Treve appeared not to move well to post in the hands of Frankie Dettori and looked ill at ease during the race, though she did stay on at the end of the mile-and-a-quarter Group One to take minor honours. "She's been for a scan and we have to wait for the results now," said trainer Criquette Head-Maarek. Slade Power completed an unforgettable Royal Ascot for trainer Eddie Lynam when blitzing to a scorching sprint success in the Diamond Jubilee. Lynam was also on the mark with Sole Power in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes and with Queen Mary heroine Anthem Alexander, and the victory of Slade Power meant Lynam went back to Ireland with three winners from four Royal Ascot runners. Kingman and Toronado look set for a fasci- nating clash at Goodwood where both are likely to line up in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Kingman was a hugely impressive winner of the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the year-older Toronado made a winning seasonal debut in the Queen Anne Stakes on the first day of the Royal Meeting. Impressive Hardwicke Stakes winner, Telescope, is likely to line up in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes back at Ascot next month. Connections of the easy winner will be hoping for a repeat of Harbinger's success in 2010. Veteran trainer, Clive Brittain, was celebrat- ing when Rizeena bounced back to form in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. The 11/2 shot was disappointing in the 1,000 Guineas in May, but Brittain reported after that race that the daughter of Iffraaj scoped poorly and would be a dif- ferent proposition at Royal Ascot, at which she also won the Queen Mary as a two-year- old last season. Ballydoyle had a mixed meeting at Royal Ascot, with Leading Light's victory in the Gold Cup the obvious highlight. Trainer Aiden O'Brien saddled only one other winner, in the shape of Ribblesdale heroine, Bracelet. ===========================================
NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
Monday's meeting at Chepstow kicked off with a 1m 4f maiden in which the Andrew Balding- trained CAPE VICTORIA ran an encouraging race despite her readily apparent greenness. She was pretty green before the race, and at the start, but ran on at the close to finish within three lengths of the much-more experienced winner and run- ner-up. Out of a dam who was Listed-placed and a winner over 1m 6f, Cape Victoria is a three-year- old filly by Mount Nelson, and related to a number of Listed and Group winners. She will have learned a lot for this first run and looks one to keep an eye out for over distances exceeding 1m 4f. Another debutant who looks promising is the Clive Cox-trained LOUIE DE PALMA , a son of Pastoral Pursuits who made a winning debut in the 6f juvenile maiden at Windsor last Monday evening. Drawn wide, he was outpaced early on and had to be pushed along before being switched wide to get a clear run. There was some greenness as jockey Ryan Tate asked him for an effort, but he quickened away nicely and looks a nice one for two-year-old races between 6f and 1m. At Hexham, the novices' hurdle didn't look a par- ticularly strong race, but the eventual third place achieved by the odds on favourite, EL MASSIVO , wasn't so disappointing given that he made a sizeable blunder at the second-last and is proba- bly better-suited by sharper tracks. By the Derby winner Authorized, El Massivo is a four-year-old gelding who won once for his former trainer, Willie Jarvis, when successful in a modest 12f handicap at Wolverhampton last September. Since then, he has joined his current trainer, Brian Ellison, and although he fell on his stable debut, when going well in a 2m novices' hurdle on heavy ground at Catterick, he has since made amends with two fair efforts over timber this spring, having only been just denied at Cartmel and Aintree. Expect his shrewd trainer to find a modest race for him at a similarly sharp track this summer. Trainer David Barron has been having a fair sea- son and his charge in the opening race at Ponte- fract's Sunday afternoon meeting made a good impression on her debut in the 6f maiden. Drawn wide, CAIUS COLLEGE GIRL travelled nicely be- hind the leaders but looked a touch one-paced at the business end of the race. Her siring by Royal Applause would suggest that this is the optimum trip for her at this stage of her career, and she is from a family of winning sprinters, but she is out of a Galileo mare, and it could be that that stam- ina influence will mean that she will show more over 7f or maybe even a mile in due course. In the here and now, this was a fair effort for her first run. At Worcester, SILVER MAN looked one to watch out for when switched to handicaps, after finish- ing a rather one-paced fourth in the 2m 7f novices' chase. By Silver Patriarch, he is fairly stoutly-bred, and as a winning Pointer, he is likely to be one who wants further and a stiffer pace than that provided by 2m 7f around Worcester. Two runs earlier, he was a good second on his chasing debut, at Towcester, finishing behind a good hurdler rated 140 at his peak. This latest run now qualifies Silver Man for handicap chases, but he is still eligible to run in novices' or begin- ners' chases, and should have plenty of options in the coming months. ===========================================

BE DISCREET AND KEEP YOUR WINNINGS SAFE There are plenty of rogues ready to take your hard-earned cash with promises of racing tips that cannot lose and there are dozens of other scams to rob the racing enthusiast. For one punter, a 77-year-old pensioner from Cardiff, there was one illegal act of which he will now be very mindful. For just a small stake, he had managed to win a cool £15,000 with an accumulator. However, he made a big mistake by counting out his winnings in full view of other punters in the shop. No sooner had he done so, two rogues rushed him and stole all his winnings. Although unharmed, he was, as you would expect, considerably distressed. Hopefully, this dreadful event will serve as a reminder to everyone who collects winnings from a bookie either in a betting shop or at the racecourse. Take great care to collect winnings discreetly and whilst there's a natural desire to shout a big win from the roof tops, the temptation needs to be suppressed.

Great Yarmouth, 27 June 2014
2.20, first race
The Starter reported that ASTER’S APPROVAL, trained by Mrs Ilka Gansera-Leveque, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
3.20, third race
The Stewards noted that ARTEMIS (IRE), placed fourth, had interfered with ASTRAL ROSE, placed third, approaching the three furlong marker, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
27/06/2014
Doncaster, 27 June 2014
The Stewards held an enquiry, adjourned from Doncaster on 15 June 2014, to consider why Jack Gilligan, the rider of DR FINLEY (IRE), placed third in The RAF Waddington Apprentice Handicap Stakes, had appeared to stop riding at the half-furlong marker. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found him in breach of Rule (B)59.4 and guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing in that he had mistaken the half-furlong marker for the winning post and briefly failed to ride out on a horse that could have finished second. They suspended him for 7 days as follows: Friday 11, Saturday 12, Monday 14, Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 July 2014.
3.35, fourth race
The Stewards noted that there was interference between the winner, MOOHAARIB (IRE), and CHAMPIONSHIP (IRE), placed second, approaching the line but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved MOOHAARIB (IRE)’s placing.
27/06/2014
Musselburgh, 27 June 2014
2.10, first race
The Stewards noted that the winner, SHOWSTOPPA, had interfered with SHE’S A WORLDIE (IRE), placed third, approximately one and a half furlongs out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved SHOWSTOPPA’s placing.
3.10, third race
The Stewards noted that VENTURA SHADOW, placed second, had interfered with HELL FOR LEATHER, unplaced, who in turn interfered with QUEEN OF THE SCOTS, placed fourth, shortly after the start, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved VENTURA SHADOW’s placing.
The Starter reported that CATIES DO DAH, trained by Alan Berry, refused to enter the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
4.20, fifth race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of JOYFUL SOUND (IRE), trained by Brian Ellison, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £280, this being his second offence in the previous twelve months.
27/06/2014
Newmarket, 27 June 2014
6.30, second race
The Starter reported that THIS IS TOO (IRE), trained by Alan Bailey, broke out of the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and he was informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Starter reported that ROYAL RETTIE, trained by Amy Weaver, was unruly in the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and she was informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference at the four-furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that EXCEEDINGLY, placed second, ridden by Nicky Mackay, had interfered with TAMARIN, unplaced, ridden by Ryan Moore. The Stewards found Mackay in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had manoeuvred to his right. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
8.10, fifth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, REMEMBER, ridden by Kieran O’Neill and trained by Richard Hannon, compared with the filly’s previous run at Newmarket on 31 May 2014, where she finished seventh of eleven, beaten 10 lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that REMEMBER appreciated the drop back in trip from 1 mile to 6 furlongs.

Suegioo and Angel Gabrial gave Dr Marwan Koukash a memorable one-two in the Chester Cup at his beloved Roodee and the two stayers again do battle in the John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday. Koukash: Has two live chances again for another big staying handicap Angel Gabrial is 1lb better off with his old adversary for a half-length defeat and this time has the services of 3lb claimer George Chaloner, who showed the value of his allowance by winning the Wokingham on Baccarat at Royal Ascot last Saturday. Trainer Richard Fahey said: "We're happy with him and we'll have to see what happens. "There shouldn't be much between him and Suegioo. We're pleased with the draw (one), everything's good and we're taking 3lb off with George." Suegioo is trained in Newmarket by Marco Botti, who could not have his charge in better shape. "He's in good form and has been training well. All's gone well since he won at Chester," he said. "We've had the chance to freshen him up and give him a short break. I'm looking forward to it. "The track should suit him, the ground shouldn't be an issue. It's a tough race. He's gone up a few pounds for winning the Chester Cup, but he's in good order. "He's progressing and we always thought this year could be his best year. The horse has been gelded, so, in a way, he is a little more straightforward than he was as a three-year-old. "He stays and he's versatile with the ground. He's doesn't mind good ground and he handles soft ground." Van Percy is a progressive young stayer who steps up to two miles for the first time. His future lies in Australia after a half-share in him was sold to OTI Racing, based Down Under. However, the four-year-old will continue to race in this country with Kingsclere trainer Andrew Balding. "Everything's right. I couldn't be happier with him except for the draw (stall 22). It makes it very tough," said Balding. "If he gets a bit of luck and get in not too wide he should run a big race. "The owners have sold a half share to OTI. He's got a long way to go to in contention for a Melbourne Cup but the smaller cup races they have over there he's ideal for. He'll go off to Australia at the end of the year. "He goes on any ground. This is his first try at two miles, but the way he stayed on at Newmarket over one mile six suggests it won't be a problem." Newcastle-born Brian Ellison would love to celebrate his 62nd birthday in style with victory from either Buthelezi and Totalize. Ellison was born on June 28, 1952, the day Souepi justified favouritism in the Plate, and it has been his ambition to get on the roll of honour for the Pitmen's Derby. Totalize booked his place in the Gosforth Park feature with a convincing victory at York two weeks ago. Buthelezi is a new addition to the team, having been bought by Ellison out of John Ferguson's stable. "Totalize was impressive at York," said the Malton trainer. "He's always been a good horse and ran good races at Cheltenham and in Ireland in the past. "The difference now is he's learned to settle. Megan (Carberry) gave him a great ride last time and he was impressive so I'm hopeful. "Buthelezi was bought at the sales to run in this. He's been a good horse and has been placed in some big races. "He's got a big engine, but we've got to get him back. He's doing everything right at home." "I was impressed with Totalize at York, though, and he's flying at home." Sir Mark Prescott believes the current fast conditions could help Big Thunder in his quest to take the big prize on his seasonal debut. "Big Thunder will love the quick ground. I don't think his work has been as impressive this spring as it was last autumn but he loves the firm and he could run completely differently on the track," the Newmarket trainer told At The Races. "He's not particularly been catching my eye at home in his work. It has been perfectly adequate but he hasn't been giving me the 'wow' factor. "I think it's true some horses get lazy at home as they get older and I hope it's true of him." Hughie Morrison will make a late call on the participation of Nearly Caught as he wants to ensure there will be enough ease in the ground for the four-year-old. "I'm sending the horse up and will take a view in the morning," said the East Ilsley trainer. "He's been primed for this race since he ran so well at Haydock (second to Noble Silk). "Maybe we'll have a wasted trip, but it's worth too much money not to take a decision late. I didn't particularly want to stop someone else from running but I've been led astray before." Nearly Caught was beaten two lengths by Noble Silk at Haydock and the latter's jockey Paul Mulrennan is hoping Noble Silk can overcome a difficult draw in stall 15. "He likes it at Newcastle, I rode him in a maiden here and finished second and we should have won, really, as I went too early," he said. "Lucy Wadham's horses are running really well, but we are drawn 15 which is not ideal. I'll need to get across the best we can. "Obviously you hope for a good break because that first bend comes up pretty quickly and you don't want to be stuck out four or five wide, as then you'll end up using too much gas. "You also need to get some cover, so even though it's a two-mile race, you are better drawn low."

Evanna McCutcheon is waiting to see if she made a worthwhile decision to keep Maarek on ice for a week ahead of Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh. Maarek: Curragh hopeful One of Europe's best sprinters missed Royal Ascot because the ground was too quick for him, but this has already been a rewarding season after he won the Duke of York Stakes and finished second to Diamond Jubilee winner Slade Power over the Curragh's six furlongs last month. "I'd like to get him out again, as we're looking at the July Cup after this." Extortionist has a quick turnaround after striking at Newmarket last weekend and Olly Stevens' three-year-old is one of two British raiders along with Monsieur Joe. Reggie Roberts' Timeless Call just held off Jamesie in the recent Midsummer Sprint at Cork, and the latter's trainer David Marnane is optimistic about his runner making some improvement. "We were delighted with the run, as it was his first one since coming back from Dubai," said Marnane. "He didn't have the best draw in the world at Cork but was closing all the way to the line. We had him in at Newcastle but decided to go for this instead. "His next aim is a Group Three at Newbury (Hackwood Stakes). It's a day where Malih Al Basti is sponsoring and we're keen to support as he's one of our big owners."

Australia will emulate his parents if he manages to follow up his win at Epsom in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday. Australia: Going for another Derby success A son of the brilliant Galileo out of Ouija Board, he is bred to win Classics and after falling just short in the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket he lived up to his promise in the Investec Derby, never looking in any trouble. Both Galileo in 2001 and Oaks heroine Ouija Board three years later managed to pull off the double, and Australia is a long odds-on shot with the bookmakers to provide trainer Aidan O'Brien with his 11th win in the Curragh showpiece. Joseph O'Brien is the jockey who gets to ride him and is excited about the weekend. He said: "I'm looking forward to it. He travelled great and did everything well at Epsom. I'm really looking forward to it." The O'Briens have been on weather-watch, however, and will not run the star colt if there is too much give in the ground. Geoffrey Chaucer, Orchestra and Kingfisher also represent the powerful Ballydoyle stable. Despite plenty of rain being forecast on Thursday night, only five millimetres fell and the ground remained good to firm on Friday morning. Speaking at Tipperary on Thursday night, O'Brien senior said: "We all know he wants fast ground. There's a lot of rain forecast for Saturday morning. A lot can change. We want to run him, but he doesn't want soft ground." Some rain fell overnight, but Curragh manager Paul Hensey said: "We had just under five millimetres, but the going remains good to firm. "There are a few showers around on Friday and we could catch some of them, they'd be welcome actually. "If we didn't catch any of them we might put a splash of water on tonight. Kingston Hill is already here and looks magnificent." Kingston Hill was the only horse to seriously give the winner a race at Epsom, but is the opposite of Australia in that his team want rain, as trainer Roger Varian would be reluctant to run his stable star on anything faster than good ground. Jockey Andrea Atzeni would love him to run, but understands it would be in the horse's best interests not to race on ground too fast. "Obviously I'm really looking forward to the race, it's a big weekend for me," said Atzeni. "He probably won't run if it's too quick, though. "I've no doubt he's got the pace for 10 furlongs, but the ground is so important to him. "It's still good to firm there now and it's been so dry of late it would take a lot of rain to change it." Dermot Weld's Fascinating Rock made great strides earlier in the season, winning a maiden, the Ballysax Stakes and being awarded the Derrinstown Derby Trial but he suffered a rough passage at Epsom and came home eighth. He is another who will not be at home on fast ground, with Weld stating he would not run unless he felt the ground was safe. John Oxx has never been known for running horses in big races he thinks have little chance, so the fact he has declared Ponfeigh may be noteworthy. He has won his last two races like an improving colt but steps up markedly in trip. "The race is worth a lot of money and it is great to have a horse good enough to run in it."

AIDAN O’BRIEN’S name is written like no other across the history of the Irish Derby, having landed a record ten victories, and Australia is hot favourite to make it a football team’s worth of winners for the master of Ballydoyle. ======================================= As you were at Newcastle Clerk of the course James Armstrong (@jrfarmstrong) tweeted: "@newcastleraces remains GOOD to FIRM after dry night. Decent dew on course & chance of a shower this am. Could poss quicken a fraction later." 1 hour ago ================================

The highlight of the day, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, sees Australia aiming to emulate fellow Ballydoyle trained Camelot and complete the English-Irish Derby double. Group 1 action also takes place on Sunday with the Pretty Polly Stakes set to round off a weekend of top class racing.
Make the most of the action with bet365s 100% Deposit Bonus. Open an account, make a deposit of £10 or more and you will be entitled to a 100% bonus on your qualifying deposit, up to a maximum of £200.
At bet365, Best Odds Guaranteed applies to every horse race, every day! So when you place your bets, take the price on your selection - and if the SP is bigger bet365 will pay you out at the bigger odds.
