WILLIE MULLINS will rely solely on Hurricane Fly for the Stan James Champion Hurdle, as a field of nine were on Sunday declared for Tuesday's Grade 1 at the Cheltenham Festival. ======================================= Activial out of Triumph Hurdle Trainer Harry Fry has confirmed impressive Adonis winner Activial will miss the JCB Triumph Hurdle and wait for Aintree. The four-year-old was as short as 7-1 for the Triumph. ============================================== Nine for Champion Hurdle Annie Power, Thousand Stars and Un De Sceaux were scratched from Tuesday's Stan James Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, to leave a field of nine. ============================================== Latest from Naas Naas racecourse (@naasracecourse) tweeted: "Going is yielding to soft on hurdle track, soft on the chase track." ============================================= Watch out for Pearlysteps Henry Daly has Pearlysteps in the CGA Foxhunter Chase, and said: “I am fascinated by the fact that Harbour Court of Alan Hill’s is rated 120 and we are rated 133, but he is 4-1 and you can get 12-1 about ours. We have got a great chance." ==============================================

Countrywide Flame gave John Quinn one of his biggest wins to date when landing the JCB Triumph Hurdle back in 2012 and, two years on, the Yorkshire-based trainer has two leading chances this week in Pearl Castle and Rutherglen. Quinn: Four decent chances at Cheltenham this week? The Paul Gaffney-owned Pearl Castle has enjoyed a good start to his career over obstacles, with two wins and a third from his first three races. His two victories both came over the same course and distance at Doncaster this year. The first was an eyecatching 16-length demolition of a large field and the second a battling effort with a 7lb penalty. Quinn said: "He won in spite of things not going right for him at Doncaster (last time) and it was a good performance under a penalty. "The ground was quite soft as well, softer than the official going, and if the ground keeps drying this week he'll run really well. "If it happened to rain and the ground went soft, I wouldn't run him." Rutherglen, who runs in the ownership of The Beer Swigging Strangers, had looked like the supposed second-string for the Malton yard until recent market support elevated the horse past his stablemate in the betting for Friday's opener. Since joining the yard in early November, the four-year-old Tiger Hill gelding has won all three of his hurdle starts and added an all-weather success at Kempton over two miles last month. Quinn said: "He's in good form and has been training nicely. He's very tough and the hustle and bustle of the race won't faze him. "He's got to improve a bit, but so do a lot of them. I'm very happy with him and I think he'll run well." Quinn also has a live contender in Tuesday's OLBG Mares' Hurdle in the shape of current second-favourite Cockney Sparrow. The booking of Tony McCoy is an obvious positive, but the mare will have to be at her very best to dethrone the mighty Quevega, who bids to secure her sixth victory in the race. Quinn said: "She's in very good form and the drying ground will help her. "She's never run over two and a half miles before, so it is an experiment, but it's the right race to run her in. "If she gets the trip I'm sure she'll run a big race." Back Cockney Sparrow now for the OLBG Mares' Hurdle!

Big Buck's is in "seriously good order" according to trainer Paul Nicholls as he bids to land the Ladbrokes World Hurdle for a fifth time at Cheltenham on Thursday. Big Buck's and owner Andy Stewart Speaking after racing at Sandown on Saturday, the former champion trainer disagreed with owner Andy Stewart, who felt the 11-year-old had "fluffed his lines" when beaten by Knockara Beau in the Cleeve Hurdle in January. It was his first start after 420 injury-enforced days off and he went down by three-quarters of a length, bringing to an end a winning streak at 18. Nicholls said: "I disagree with Andy. I don't think he fluffed his lines at Cheltenham. He needed the run quite obviously on very bad ground and he had been off for a long time. I've trained him with one race in mind. "If it had been a normal year, he'd have run at Newbury in November (Long Distance Hurdle) where we normally start the season off. I wanted him to have a hard race to see where we were with him - and if he was going to get to Cheltenham we needed a hard race. "Sam Twiston-Davies did exactly as I wanted him to do - you ride a stayer like a stayer, you don't ride a stayer like a sprinter - and he had the race won jumping the last, but just got tired. "I walked the course that day just before we had all those thunderstorms and the ground from the back of the last to the winning post was virtually unraceable, and he just got tired. "He's had seven weeks since then. He's bloomed, he looks fantastic and is a lot lighter. "He had a good gallop at Exeter the other day and he's schooled well. I'm very happy with him and the one thing he'll enjoy is the drying ground. "All his best wins have been on good or good to soft, so the omens are good with the weather, he looks great and I'm very much looking forward to the challenge of the race." Nicholls is fully aware of the threat posed by unbeaten Irish mare Annie Power. He said: "She beat Zarkandar on very testing ground, which he doesn't like, at Cheltenham earlier on, but she's a very good mare. The whole of Ireland thinks she's going to win and perhaps she will do - but none of ours will go down without a big fight and Big Buck's certainly won't go down without a fight, he's in seriously good order."

Hurricane Fly will face eight rivals when he bids for a third victory in the Stan James Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday. Hurricane Fly after last year's triumph in the Champion Hurdle Willie Mullins' brilliant 10-year-old will be aiming to secure an incredible 20th Grade One success in the feature event on the opening day of the Festival. Hurricane Fly is the Irish champion trainer's only runner after the expected withdrawals of Annie Power, Un De Sceaux and Thousand Stars. The New One, representing Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies, is rated by bookmakers as the biggest threat to Hurricane Fly, while last year's jaw-dropping Triumph Hurdle hero Our Conor has twice run well behind Mullins' champion this season. Trainer Dessie Hughes reported Our Conor has settled in well at the Prestbury Park stables, saying: "He went over on Thursday and all is good with him. "He thrived when he got there last year before winning the Triumph, so we decided to send him over again well in advance of his target." Nicky Henderson's My Tent Or Yours appears to be the other major contender for Hurricane Fly's crown, and although he suffered a minor foot injury last week, he goes in as owner JP McManus' No 1 challenger. McManus also has the Jessica Harrington-trained Jezki - who has been declared to wear a hood for the first time - and likely pacemaker Captain Cee Bee among the final declarations. Jeremy Scott's stable star Melodic Rendezvous, Paul Nicholls' Ptit Zig and the Alan King-trained Grumeti complete the Champion Hurdle field. The combatants appear set to battle it out on decent ground, with clerk of the course Simon Claisse removing any final 'soft' parts from his going description on Saturday - current conditions are good to soft all over with drying weather likely until Tuesday.

What a difference a year makes One year ago yesterday Cheltenham was covered in 65 acres of protective fleece and wind chill reached temperatures of -4C. Yesterday, by contrast, all was glorious spring sunshine and warmth and the forecast is for more of the same. ========================================= Just what you need Three winners, one second and one third from six runners at Market Rasen today for trainer Charlie Longsdon. Not bad with Cheltenham just two days away. ========================================= We think she'll stay' "I think she'll stay, Ruby thinks she'll stay, dad thinks she'll stay and Jim Bolger thought she would be a Cup horse on the Flat so she should stay" - Patrick Mullins on Ladbrokes World Hurdle favourite Annie Power. ===================================================

Nick Scholfield is in the frame to ride Teaforthree in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday after Tony McCoy switched to Triolo D'Alene. Rebecca Curtis: Wants Teaforthree to be ridden by Nick Scholfield Scholfield partnered the Rebecca Curtis-trained 10-year-old into third place in last year's Grand National and currently does not have a ride in Friday's big race. "Nick Scholfield may ride him, but obviously I've got to speak to the owners and see what they want to do," said Curtis. "Nick is available to ride him, but I've got to put it by the owners. "Teaforthree is in as good a form as we've had him. Hopefully he'll run well." Curtis was left to look for another jockey after freeing McCoy from his original obligation so that he could team up with Hennessy winner Triolo D'Alene, Nicky Henderson's second string behind last year's winner and ante-post favourite Bobs Worth.

Many Clouds is set to take his chance in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham on Wednesday for Oliver Sherwood. Many Clouds: Set to run in the RSA The Trevor Hemmings-owned novice has recorded two wins and two seconds from his four runs this season, most recently finishing runner-up to O'Faolains Boy in Ascot's Reynoldstown Novices' Chase. Sherwood has always held the seven-year-old in high regard, and did have options for the Cloudings gelding, as he explained. He said: "If I had it my way we'd have probably gone for the three-mile handicap (on Tuesday), but Mr Hemmings already has another horse in the race (Vintage Star) and he's entitled to run in this. "I think it's a very open RSA this year and you can make a case for half a dozen horses, if not more. "In his last run at Ascot some people have said that he and Gevrey Chambertin might have cut each other's throats a bit up front, but we certainly won't be running him that forcefully at the Festival. "The one thing I've been really pleased with this season, especially in his last two runs, has been his jumping. It was exemplary at Ascot. "I think he's going there with a good chance and if he finishes in the first five I'll be very pleased." Stablemate Deputy Dan is entered in both the Neptune and Albert Bartlett, but Sherwood has said that his novice is more likely to run in Friday's race over three miles. After twice finishing runner-up in his first two starts over hurdles, he then went on to record back-to-back wins in impressive style at Chepstow and Warwick on heavy ground, despite suffering a nasty cut on a hind leg in the latter. Sherwood said: "He'll almost certainly run in the Albert Bartlett and he's in great form. He'll have no problems with the extra trip as he has plenty of stamina in the pedigree. "It was public knowledge that he had a nasty cut when he won at Warwick, and he had to stand in his box for 10 days, but he's back to full work now and I've been very happy with his progress. "I'm very lucky to have a horse that is capable of going there with a live each-way chance." Sherwood has been forced to miss the OLBG Mares' Hurdle with Mischievous Milly after she suffered a setback, but does hope to run the lightly-raced Drum Valley is he gets into the Pertemps Final on Thursday. He said: "It's going to be nip and tuck whether he gets in or not. He's a better horse on better ground, and he could be anything."

Sire De Grugy heads a field of 11 declared for the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham on Wednesday. Sire De Grugy: Heads acceptors for Queen Mother Champion Chase Gary Moore's stable star has been a revelation this term, winning the Tingle Creek, Desert Orchid and Clarence House Chase, and will be a warm order for the two-mile title in the absence of last year's winner Sprinter Sacre. The latter's trainer Nicky Henderson still has a decent hand with Tingle Creek third Captain Conan and Kid Cassidy, who beat Sire De Grugy at Cheltenham in November. Sizing Europe makes his fourth successive appearance in the race, having struck gold in 2011 and having finished second for the last two years. His trainer Henry de Bromhead also saddles Special Tiara, who was third to Kid Cassidy earlier in the season Arvika Ligeonniere bids to give Ireland's champion trainer Willie Mullins his first win in the race. The nine-year-old secured his third victory from four starts this campaign in the Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown last month. Last year's Arkle runner-up Baily Green, trained by Mouse Morris, is the fourth Irish challenger. Paul Nicholls has decided to take the plunge with second-season novice Hinterland rather than go for Tuesday's Racing Post Arkle Trophy. Module, Somersby and Wishfull Thinking make up the field. Benefficient was the only withdrawal at the 48-hour final declaration as he waits for Thursday's Ryanair Chase.

======================================== 17:15 Tuesday 11th March Cheltenham Day 1 Tips
The Baylis & Harding is a wonderful race to get stuck into for an opening handicap of the day. I want to focus on the youngsters this year, normally a preference in a race like this, and a couple of 7 year olds make most appeal. The first is a really progressive chaser in Standing Ovation who was perhaps a bit disappointing last time. He just gets preference to Tour Des Champs who beat him at Kempton but he is 4lb better off and likely to have the ground in his favour. Connor O'Farrell has a super record on him and really looked after him last time after he began to struggle to go with them. The worry is that he wasn't great on his only start here but that came after a few races on the bounce and the spring ground should really be a plus this afternoon. I expect him to resume progression at 22/1 for a yard bang in form. The other of note is last year's RSA 3rd Hadrian's Approach who has to be capable of a win off 146. He carries more weight than a winner for some time but, if he can jump like he did last time, he's potentially a Grade 1 horse in a handicap. He will not want it too quick and he's no great price at 10/1 but definitely pick of those at the head of the market and he should make the frame. This is likely to be run at a good gallop and both of these look as though they'll stay plenty further. Shakalakaboomboom could be very interesting at a price but, equally, could be pulled up. Cheltenham 14.40 - Hadrian's Approach 1pt e/w Cheltenham 14.40 - Standing Ovation 1pt e/w
This could be blind faith but if you are confident about something, you may as well go all out. I backed The New One after last year's Neptune for this and have continued all year. He has a very nice profile for this, right age, perfect mix of speed and stamina, and certainly has his ideal ground this afternoon. I'd encourage backing him at 3/1. Th addition of Captain Cee Bee is a big plus as he will want a decent test and, though connections have said they are prepared to go forward, he's best ridden prominently off a decent gallop. I'm taking on Hurricane Fly and if he can beat a field where pretty much everything else wants the race to pan out differently, on good ground, hats off to him. As a 10 year old, it's a very big ask. At a price I do think Jezki has a chance in headgear if they go a fair pace. Only a chance though, and winning the classiest Champion for 8 years or so will take some going. Cheltenham 15.20 - The New One 3pt win
For the rest of the day I'm taking on the Irish in the Arkle with the 2 major Brits. Highland Retreat and L'Unique could be interesting against Quevega but, equally, she may not be beatable. I'm happy chancing The Liquidator in the Supreme. As for the 4 miler, I'm on Shutthefrontdoor at 14/1 but wouldn't be backing him at 7/2. I do think it may be worth having a go at According To Trev though, who will be suited by the drying conditions. His dam has an impressive stayers pedigree, including a sister from the family of National winner Numbersixvalverde. He looked progressive at the start of the season but also looked a touch slow over 3 miles 1 here an 3 miles at Exeter before falling at Newbury when still bang in the mix. He was pulled up in a boggy handicap at Doncaster but should be better on better ground. He has won over hurdles here at 3 miles 2 and is definitely worth chancing at 33/1, though a fair step up is required on ratings. Cheltenham 16.40 - According To Trev 1pt e/w
The first shout for the Novice Handicap at the end of the day is an obvious one but I'm really surprised he's not favourite. Manyriverstocross really does tick all the boxes and should be seen to his very best over this trip on decent ground. He ran a really solid race behind Oscar Whisky last time and is still potentially well treated off 3lb higher than when a staying on 3rd behind Ted Veale in the County Hurdle last year. He may well find one too good but the yard is hitting form at the right time and it's tricky not to see him involved at 10/1. Plenty of others make appeal and the two Philip Hobbs inmates are of particular interest at decent prices. Baby Mix is another that could be well treated for a yard having a great season and he's won here over hurdles. The one that is really interesting though is Festive Affair on handicap debut. He beat a couple of really decent sorts last time when finally getting it together and 134 looks lenient. His December efforts were in keeping with yard form but they've sent out a few winners in February and I'm sure he'll come on for better ground given his pedigree. A step up in trip looks sure to suit and he is worth taking at 14/1. Cheltenham 17.15 - Manyriverstocross 1pt e/w Cheltenham 17.15 - Festive Affair 1pt e/w
Already advised: Cheltenham 13.30 - The Liquidator 1pt e/w 25/1 ==============================================

Last Instalment and First Lieutenant will both be declared for Friday's Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, according to Gigginstown House Stud's racing manager Eddie O'Leary. First Lieutenant will be declared for the Gold Cup First Lieutenant was among the leading contenders for the Ryanair Chase on Thursday, having chased home Cue Card in the race 12 months ago, but was not among the declarations. Doubts remain over the participation of Hennessy Gold Cup hero Last Instalment in Friday's blue riband due to the drying conditions at Prestbury Park, but O'Leary insists it is not out of the question both horses will line up, if the ground is suitable. O'Leary said: "We have decided to run Rathlin in the Ryanair and both First Lieutenant and Last Instalment will be declared for the Gold Cup. "No decision has been made (on whether Last Instalment) will run. "We could run both horses if the ground is suitable, but at the moment, it looks as though the ground would favour First Lieutenant. "We'll just have to see what happens

Gary Moore is confident a return to Cheltenham will not be a problem for Sire De Grugy as he looks to justify favouritism in the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday. Sire De Grugy: Strong favourite for Queen Mother Chase With Nicky Henderson's reigning champion Sprinter Sacre the biggest absentee from this year's entire Festival after suffering a heart condition earlier this season, the two-mile chasing division has gone from being a one-horse show to a wide-open affair. Sire De Grugy has undoubtedly taken up the mantle as the one to beat following victories in the Tingle Creek at Sandown, the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton and the Clarence House Chase at Ascot, with each effort more impressive than the last in the hands of the trainer's son, Jamie. The eight-year-old's one defeat this season was at Prestbury Park, however, when beaten by Nicky Henderson's fellow Champion Chase contender Kid Cassidy, and he was also behind the champion trainer's other leading hope, Captain Conan, in novice company at the track in November 2012. Moore said: "The horse is fine. I wouldn't say he's better than he's been all season, but I think he's as good as he was going into the race at Ascot. Hopefully that will be good enough. "Obviously I would prefer it if there was more give in the ground, but we can't help what the ground is and we'll get on with it. "I think people are trying to find ways to get him beat and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm not worried about the track. "His jumping has been so much better this year. He's matured and having Jamie ride him makes it better all round. "Whatever happens, he's had a great season already. He's won two Grade Ones and a Grade Two so he's done his bit. "He probably didn't get the credit he deserved earlier on this season but he has done now. "Sprinter Sacre was a beast last year but that's racing. One day you're up there, the next day you're down." Head lad Corky Brown has long told anyone who would listen that Captain Conan is the best horse in the Henderson yard. And with Sprinter Sacre at home in his stable, Henderson relies on Captain Conan and Kid Cassidy to keep the two-mile crown at Seven Barrows. Captain Conan was sent off 7-4 joint-favourite with Sire De Grugy for the Tingle Creek, his first run since landing a Grade One at Aintree last April. However, he was beaten seven and a quarter lengths and has been sidelined since. Henderson revealed that Captain Conan was suffering from a "clinical problem" afterwards and there is growing confidence the seven-year-old can turn the tables on Moore's runner. "He is better now than when last we saw him," said Henderson. "He has done everything we have asked of him. We went to Sandown for the Tingle Creek and got beat, but I've got to say, jumping the second-last, he looked certain to nearly go and win. "There was nothing physically wrong with him, it was just a clinical thing that we found afterwards. His mineral levels had gone upside down. "He is a good horse, he runs well fresh and we've got him right. He has worked well and schooled well, and has had two racecourse gallops - everything's been right and I would have to admit he'd be one of my A-team for the week. I am serious about that. "The two horses that have beaten Sire De Grugy at Cheltenham have actually been Kid Cassidy and Captain Conan. Between the two of them we have to try and do it again. "Sire De Grugy is the best, without Sprinter Sacre - I'd give the world to get him back into this race, because he's in a different league, I think. "Sire De Grugy has been very good, but there is just this issue with him about Cheltenham. "I can see why Gary Moore says he's not worried, but he has been beaten twice round there." The Irish challenge is headed by Arvika Ligeonniere, who has struck four times at Grade One level but has undoubtedly shown his absolute best on right-handed tracks. Willie Mullins' charge was pulled up after running no sort of race in last year's Arkle Trophy, but his trainer is hopeful of a better showing 12 months on. Mullins said: "He was disappointing last year in the Arkle. We're hoping we can put that behind us, but the soft ground we anticipated for him hasn't materialised. "Going left-handed probably isn't ideal, but we're hoping he can overcome that and run well in an open race. "Hopefully he'll be involved." Henry de Bromhead saddles Cheltenham favourite Sizing Europe and Grade One winner Special Tiara. Sizing Europe has won the Arkle and Champion Chase and has filled the runner-up spot in this race for the last two years, but disappointed at Leopardstown last time and is getting on as a 12-year-old. De Bromhead said: "His record round Cheltenham is second to none. "We decided when Sprinter Sacre was out to commit to the Champion Chase. He has such a good record over the course and distance. "Obviously he's 12 now, but we'll see. If he recaptures the form shown against Sprinter Sacre at Punchestown (last season), we'd be delighted. "The run over Christmas was disappointing, I think my tactics were wrong, basically, but hopefully we can get it right at Cheltenham. "If he could repeat his run in the race last year he'd run very well. "With Special Tiara, the better the ground, the better he'll run. He has some good form with Sire De Grugy and some of those guys, so I think he has a really good chance. "They both go there with live chances, I'm very hopeful with both of them." The fourth and final Irish-trained runner is last year's Arkle runner-up Baily Green, who is bound to have been trained to the minute by master trainer Mouse Morris. Big-race jockey David Casey said: "I'm looking forward to Baily Green. The weather forecast looks good for him because the more the ground dries the better. "He ran a cracking race to finish second to Simonsig in the Arkle last year. "I think Simonsig would be favourite if he was in the race and if Baily Green can repeat his Arkle performance, he must have a good chance." Paul Nicholls decided to split his pair of star two-mile novices, with Dodging Bullets running in the Arkle and Hinterland taking on the seasoned campaigners. "He's won two good races over two miles at Sandown. He's a winner at Cheltenham. He goes well fresh and and that's why we didn't run him on bad ground in the middle of winter," Nicholls told Betfair. "I took him to Wincanton the other morning and he jumped eight fences, went twice down the back straight, because he hasn't run for a little while. He did that very well and he's in good shape. "You look at some of the others - Arvika Legeonniere at around 6-1 will end up in the car park because he goes right-handed. It looks like he'll be in trouble going left -handed. "Baily Green was a big price last year when he was second to Nicky's horse in the Arkle and Kid Cassidy did beat Sire De Grugy (at Cheltenham) but he was getting 10lb - he obviously does go well at Cheltenham, but then you are talking about Hinterland. "I think he's in the mix and worth a shot. "He's a really exciting two-mile chaser." The Mick Channon-trained Somersby was runner-up behind Sire De Grugy in the Tingle Creek and unseated Dominic Elsworth at the fifth fence at Ascot. Channon said: "He unseated at Ascot but his preparation has gone well since then. "He is probably the forgotten horse, but he is renowned for making those silly mistakes and is his own worst enemy. "A strongly-run two miles around Cheltenham seems to suit him and, if the real Somersby turns up, he will shake them all up - I can assure you of that." Tom George's Module and the Philip Hobbs-trained Wishfull Thinking complete the 11-runner field.

The unbeaten Faugheen leads 16 contenders declared for Wednesday's Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham. Faugheen: Likely hotpot in the Neptune A winner of a bumper and three hurdle starts so far, the Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old takes a drop back in distance after cruising to a five-length victory over three miles at Limerick when last seen in December. Rathvinden is also set to take his chance for the Irish champion trainer and he renews rivalry with the David Pipe-trained Red Sherlock. The latter came out on top when they met at Prestbury Park earlier in the season but the Mullins contender will be 3lb better off on level weights in this Grade One contest. Dessie Hughes' Lieutenant Colonel and Shanahan's Turn from the Henry de Bromhead yard give the Irish team further strength. Nicky Henderson has two bullets to fire, with Tony McCoy set to ride the lightly-raced Cup Final and Barry Geraghty booked for Tolworth Hurdle winner Royal Boy. Other leading names include Fennell Bay, Cole Harden and Ballyalton.

Cheltenham, 11 March 2014
2.05, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that CHAMPAGNE FEVER (IRE), placed second, ridden by Ruby Walsh, had interfered with the winner, WESTERN WARHORSE (IRE), ridden by Tom Scudamore. The Stewards found Walsh in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he switched his whip to his left hand when his mount was already moving to its right. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by Tom Scudamore, the rider of the winner, WESTERN WARHORSE (IRE), on the run in. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip in an incorrect place. The Stewards suspended Scudamore for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 March 2014.
4.40, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of SUNTIEP (FR), ridden by Mr P.W. Mullins, and trained by W.P. Mullins, which was settled in the rear until making rapid ground to finish third, beaten 1 ¼ lengths.. They interviewed the rider and received observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to jump off in mid division and get the gelding jumping. He added that he was outpaced through the early part of the race and when he began making headway in the back straight on the final circuit SUNTIEP (FR) made a mistake which knocked him out of his ground. He further stated that when making headway in the home straight the gelding made another mistake at the second last which left him with an impossible task. Having heard his evidence the Stewards noted his explanation.
They further enquired into the reason why Mr Barry O’Neill, the rider of ADRENALIN FLIGHT (IRE), placed fourth, beaten ½ length for third place, had appeared to ease his horse prematurely for two strides half way up the run in. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they noted his explanation that the gelding was hanging right and he stopped riding to correct him before starting to ride again. They were satisfied that it did not affect his placing.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by Mr Steven Clements, the rider of ROGUE ANGEL (IRE), unplaced, from approaching the second last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Mr Clements for 4 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority.
5.15, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the run in.. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, PRESENT VIEW, ridden by Brendan Powell, had interfered with ATAGLANCE, placed second, ridden by Brian Hughes, and that the interference had not improved PRESENT VIEW’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The Stewards found Powell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his horse to drift left handed away from the whip. They suspended him for 3 days as follows: Tuesday 25, Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 March 2014.

6.15, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of HEAVENLY RIVER (FR), trained by K. R. Burke, ridden by Joey Haynes, passing the two furlong marker. Having viewed a video recording of the incident, they were satisfied that the fall was caused by the filly clipping the heels of another horse. They therefore took no further action.
6.45, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SIR FRANK MORGAN (IRE), ridden by Joe Fanning and trained by Mark Johnston, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the gelding had been suited by a long rest, a step up in trip and the all-weather surface. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of SIR FRANK MORGAN (IRE) could be reviewed.
7.15, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Stephen Craine, the rider of FINAL DELIVERY, placed second, in the final two furlongs. 8.45, seventh race
The Stewards noted that CHOICE OF DESTINY, placed second, had interfered with BOB MASNICKEN, unplaced, on leaving the stalls but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved CHOICE OF DESTINY’s placing.

Cheltenham going report After another dry night the the going at Cheltenham is good, good to soft in places. It’s good to soft, soft in places on the cross-country course. 32 mins ago =============================================== Maguire on the mend Donald McCain (donaldmccain) tweeted: "Called to see Jason on way home, tired but talking away. Big difference! Hopefully better again tomorrow." =============================================== Sam Twiston Davies.
I wish I had been closer turning in
THE NEW ONE getting beaten in the Champion Hurdle is the hardest thing in racing I've had to deal with.
Things had been going so well and I was really looking forward to the race, but I guess what happened is jump racing.
I had a lovely position and I was really pleased with the way the horse was going. We had no chance of avoiding Our Conor and I just accepted my fate. You cannot win a race when you have been stopped like that, especially a Champion Hurdle.
The next couple of hurdles were about getting the horse's confidence back and I gave him a lot of space. I tried to think what AP or Ruby would do if they were in the same position.
It was quite a performance to finish where he did and how he did. I just wish I had been five lengths closer turning in.
To be so close to winning a race like that, but being so far away is upsetting. To have a horse who could have won but didn't because of bad luck is gutting, but we still have a horse.
I feel awful for the connections of Our Conor, and after the owner pledged to donate all of the prize-money to charity you would have thought he would get a bit of luck.
Nige came down to reassure me. He told me we still have the best two-mile hurdler in England and Ireland, and he's right. The horse is a legend.
I said to the owners afterwards that I didn't mean to be rude but I just wanted to go and sit in the weighing room. You get yourself so wound up about things that it's hard to take when it goes wrong, although you have to have perspective on it all.
Aidan Coleman and Nick Scholfield, who didn't have a great time with Irving, came over to talk to me about it and it's brilliant to have friends to talk to like that. They helped lift me before my ride in the last and I like to think I did Ahyaknowyerself [fourth] justice.
As for today, Kaylif Aramis is my best ride in the Coral Cup. I think the track, ground and style of race will suit him. ======================================= View from the clerk Cheltenham clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: “I think the prospect of watering is more likely. We’re not doing anything tonight and will take a view tomorrow afternoon on the Thursday and Friday track.” 12 hours ago. ========================================= Tote news The Tote Jackpot rolls over to tomorrow, with Jezki knocking out the remaining ticketholders. The Jackpot prize-fund is expected to climb past £250,000. ============================================== Record day one crowd Tuesday's attendance at Cheltenham came to a record 57,098, 814 more than last year. ===============================================

I have always thought he could be an even better chaser.” " Smad Place 2:05 Cheltenham ============================================ David Pipe (Red Sherlock) is having a profitable season (£40.15 to a £1 level stake) with runners at Cheltenham Red Sherlock 1:30 Cheltenham ================================================== 13:30 Wednesday 12th March Racing Tips - 12/03/2014
I said in the Cheltenham preview that it was tricky to look beyond the top 2 in the market. However, with the ground genuinely good, you have to give a chance to Rathvinden and Ballyalton and perhaps even Cup Final who is by Presenting. Either way, this could be a real speed test on quick ground and that would worry me a little for the Pipe horse. Faugheen could win by 20 lengths but he won last time on heavy ground over 3 miles so I wouldn't have him at 9/4. At the morning prices, I think Ballyalton is the one to be on. He is to go chasing next season so I'm not sure connections are expecting to win this but I can see him being a threat on quick ground. His form looked better before the turn of the year but he has course form and the yard are a different proposition now than they were in January when winless form some 20 runners. He is rated 12lb below the favourite but I think that's a touch lower than it should be given we can put a line through his last effort and he's a nice price at 20/1. Cheltenham 13.30 - Ballyalton 1pt e/w
Already advised: Cheltenham 14.05 - Carlingford Lough 1pt e/w 14/1 Cheltenham 14.05 - Le Bec 1pt e/w 16/1
I'm tempted by Cotton Mill but don't like backing Ferguson horses and he's not much bigger than Far West who still looks off a handy mark. The ground is not certain to suit but he is untried on it so it's possible he'll be ok and Paul Nicholls is adamant this horse is crying out for a trip. He loves it here and gets the vote over Nicholls' other likeable runner, Sametegal, at 20/1. So many others have chances and I'm reluctant to look too near the top of the betting but Bayan14/1 could be generous. I'm not worried about a 'prep' run on the flat last time on soft ground and he'll be much more of a threat this afternoon for a trainer that knows how to win Cheltenham handicaps. Cheltenham 14.40 - Bayan 1pt e/w Cheltenham 14.40 - Far West 1pt e/w
The Champion Chase looks all about taking on Sire De Grugy and I want to do so with Baily Green, Kid Cassidy and Captain Conan. The latter is the likeliest on pure ability but I do think he is a bit risky at 5/1 given he's had just 1 (poor) effort this term. Kid Cassidy should like the ground and he beat the favourite over course and distance in November in receipt of 10lb. Level weights will be harder and he comes here off the back of a disappointing effort in Ireland. Baily Green was one I fancied for the Ryanair but looking at the pace on show he has a sniff this afternoon. He does seem to need good ground amongst this company and he gets that today. A 2 and a half length 2nd in last year's Arkle, you have to ask what price would Simonsig be? If, like me, you think odds-on favourite then Baily Green is worth supporting at 10/1 in a weak renewal. He certainly stays further but the likes of Special Tiara, Arvika Ligeonniere and Module going forward, and that hill, should ensure a proper test at the trip and he looks a sound value play. Cheltenham 15.20 - Baily Green 1pt e/w
The Fred Winter can be a mine field but it's normally a good idea to find something that has been involved in a Graded race or has winning form coming into this. Katgary could be anything but pick of those near the top of the market is Dawalan. However, I want to find some bigger prices and can't find better than Clarcam for the trainer that won this last year. He will relish the good ground and has solid Graded form behind him having finished a 7 length 2nd to Guitar Pete on penultimate start. I was disappointed not to see him win next time at Musselburgh but that could be down to the deteriorating ground. He's well treated and, though his future lies over fences, worth taking at 16/1. He's worse off at the weights with previous conqueror Orgilgo Bay but that runner has plenty to prove after 2 poor efforts and yard form is a worry. At a little bigger is Violet Dancer for the Moores who won a big handicap with an unexposed sort at the weekend. He looked stumped by heavy ground in behind Le Rocher in a December Grade 1 and the form of his disappointing run last time is very patchy as they went no gallop. He's 25/1 and can outrun his mark of 130. Handiwork and Akdam are the picks of the crazy prices but both look exposed. Cheltenham 16.40 - Clarcam 1pt e/w Cheltenham 16.40 - Violet Dancer 1pt e/w
This is very much an e/w play for the Champion Bumper but Our Kaempfer certainly brings better form with him this afternoon than a few ahead of him in the market. Just over a length 3rd to Red Sherlock here last time, he was still green early and had more to do turning for home than the 1st and 2nd. He showed a good turn of foot but ultimately a truer test is likely to suit and the form of the race is solid. That contest has been won by the likes of Best Mate and Rock On Ruby and it's a decent bit of form to go by coming into this. He will need to have improved again but Charlie Longsdon, who has a good bumper record, indicated there was more to come with time and he's back after a 4 month absence. The Irish will be tough to beat and you couldn't find a more likely winner than Shaneshill but he's a 7/1 shot and I'd rather be on the 28/1 about the selection in the hope he's progressed. Donald is looking forward to two of his better chances this week in the shape of Corrin Wood and Clondaw Kaempfer.
14.05 RSA Chase (3m) - Corrin Wood
It's obviously a shame that Jason can't ride him - I have been to see him and the doctors seem pleased with his progress given the severity of his injury. Corrin Wood has been a real star over fences so far and his bold jumping has been the feature of his wins. I don't think he will be inconvenienced by the better ground and although it looks a very strong race, he goes there with an obvious chance. Although he has been making the running, I don't think he has to lead and there are several of these who like to be ridden prominently. If his jumping takes him to the front then so be it but I will leave it up to Richard (Johnson). This is clearly his biggest test so far but he's very tough and I am hopeful of a very big run.
14.40 Coral Cup (2m5f) - Clondaw Kaempfer
He had his problems after Newbury last winter but there was a lot to like about the way he ran at Aintree last time. I think he is going to be a better horse on good ground so while it wasn't always the plan to put him away for this, with the ground as it has been, in the end the decision was quite an easy one. I still think he is on a very competitive mark and would like to think he would run a big race but there are plenty of others who will feel the same.

Paul drew a blank on day one but has some lively contenders on Wednesday - here are his thoughts on all his runners on Champion Chase day at Cheltenham
14:05, Cheltenham Black Thunder Has form on a par with most of these but, even though he acts on decent ground and actually won his bumper on fast going, you have to think that the drying conditions are against him. But, as I have said, his form stacks up very well. I don't think he was quite at his best when beaten by Corrin Wood last time out at Warwick, but there was clearly no disgrace in that performance anyway, as the winner could be very smart indeed. And his earlier defeats of the likes of Fox Appeal, Many Clouds and Shotgun Paddy represent some of the best staying novice form around. If the ground doesn't dry out too much, you have to give him a fair shout. Had a racecourse gallop with Just A Par recently. Just A Par Got us a little excited with the manner of his 14 length defeat of Third Intention at Newbury in November, only to run no sort of race in the Feltham at Kempton next time. But he choked there, so we had his palate cauterised and have given him a nice break since. If he returns to that Newbury form then he is a very lively outsider here, especially on this better ground, but a nagging doubt in my mind is whether he is ready for this test after only three chase starts and his problem last time. But he is a very promising horse, alright, and a big run from me wouldn't surprise me at all. Had a racecourse gallop with Black Thunder recently. Sam Winner If you fancy the second favourite Smad Place in this, then you have to fancy Sam Winner at nearly twice the price, it's as simple as that. And I do. I think he has a great chance. He was giving Smad Place 3lb when beaten 2 lengths in extremely testing conditions at Newbury last time, and I think this better ground is very much in his favour. He was getting 8lb himself when beating Le Bec by 4 lengths here in December, but I have him in really good form coming into this and I am very hopeful that he can erase his disappointing performance when favourite for the Pertemps here last year. I think he has an excellent each-way chance at a double-figure price.
14:40, Cheltenham Sametegal Appears to love it here, having finished third in last year's Triumph, and followed up with a win and an excellent second to Dell' Arca in the Greatwood Hurdle this time around. But he was raised 6lb for finishing second and I think that he is pretty much in the handicapper's grip at the moment, especially as he was not even dropped after his sixth at Musselburgh last time. I am hoping the step up in trip brings about improvement, and it will need to if he is to be competitive here off his mark. Far West I think he is the pick of my three in here, as he has been crying out for this step up in trip. The form of his second to Melodic Rendezvous in the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton in November looks pretty decent now and he was in the process of putting a poor Haydock run behind him - where we subsequently found him to be suffering from stomach ulcers - when he came down at the last in the Betfair Hurdle. I am not saying that he would have won but we think that he would have finished third had he stood up, as I think he would have battled on. He is fine after that fall and, off a mark of 148, I can see him going well. Edgardo Sol Comes alive at this time of year and on this ground, so I am expecting him to put some poor performances behind him. You would have to think that he is probably too exposed to be winning this, but he is 2lb lower than when a good sixth in the County Hurdle last season, Harry takes 3lb off, and he has form over this longer trip. But, being realistic, a place looks the height of his chances.
15:20, Cheltenham Hinterland This is a bit of a punt but in the absence of Sprinter Sacre and in what now looks a very winnable Champion Chase, we felt it was well worth it. And don't forget that he is a second-season novice, having finished a decent second to Captain Conan at Sandown last season. He has run two excellent races over fences at that track this term, the pick of which was obviously his neck defeat of Grandouet, with Taquin Du Seuil 8 lengths behind in third. And that race was run in a faster time than the Tingle Creek on the same card. He would have to improve around a stone to trouble a peak-form Sire De Grugy, but he went well here over hurdles, and to win the lottery you have to have a ticket. We have.
16:00, Cheltenham Sire Collonges We have trained him for this race ever since he beat Any Currency here in the Cross Country Chase in December. He seemed to really take to the new challenge and, while this is obviously far tougher, he has a good each-way chance, especially on the drying ground. Had a racecourse gallop at Exeter behind Big Buck's and Silviniaco Conti recently, and is in good form.
16:40, Cheltenham Solar Impulse Was very impressive when he won by 10 lengths at Auteuil in June, and we thought that he would go well in the Finale at Chepstow in December on his first start for us, but he pretty much stopped in the straight. He had his soft palate cauterised after that, and as a result I thought that he would need the race at Kempton last time, so I was very happy with his third to Activial. I wasn't too chuffed to see him raised 4lb for that though, and that makes life a lot tougher for him here. But there is more to come from him, and Harry takes 3lb off. Katgary I hear a lot of people have been talking him up as my "plot horse" but they were probably saying the same thing about Ulck Du Lin two seasons ago, who was also having his first start for me having joined us from France and he finished 12th in this race. And that's the point. I genuinely don't know what I have got with him yet or whether he is well-handicapped off a mark of 130. I'll be honest.
He looked good when winning in France, I was impressed by what I saw in a recent racecourse gallop, he has worked really well since, and he schooled really well on grass at the weekend. All very positive. But I'd be guessing if I said he was well-handicapped, as I let the track do the talking, not the gallops. Put it this way, we certainly knew what we had when Sanctuaire won this race, as he had beaten a certain Grands Crus by 4 lengths previously and was racing off just 127! But I did ask Daryl on Sunday what he wanted to ride if Saturday's Sandown winner Dormello Mio got in, and he said he wasn't getting off Katgary, so he obviously fancies him! Keltus We have deliberately kept him fresh for this race and he will love the ground. He has gone up 5lb for being beaten ¾ length at Huntingdon last time though, so he isn't obviously well handicapped, but I think there is improvement in him.

RUBY WALSH has expanded on comments at Cheltenham on Tuesday when it was reported he claimed racehorses were replaceable in the wake of the death of top hurdler Our Conor.
Our Conor was put down as a result of injury sustained in a fall during the Stan James Champion Hurdle in which Walsh was riding Hurricane Fly, who failed in his bid to win the race for a third time.
In comments made after the race, Ireland's champion jockey was reported to have said: "Horses are horses. You can replace a horse. It's sad, but horses are animals, outside your back door. Humans are humans. They are inside your back door.
"You can replace a horse. You can't replace a human being. That's my feeling on it," he said.
Walsh had said earlier, after victory in the first race on Vautour, that Cheltenham was not all about winning as his thoughts turned to fellow jockey JT McNamara, seriously injured at the festival a year ago, and Britain's champion jockey Tony McCoy whose six-month old son has recently undergone cardiac surgery.
Speaking on TalkSport radio on Wednesday morning, Walsh was asked to expand on those comments, and said: "We look after horses like they're pets. There's a huge difference between your pet and your family. That's the point I was making.
"There's a big difference between you going home tonight and something's happened to your dog, and you go home tonight and something's happened to one of your kids. There's a huge difference.
"We look after horses like they are pets, and that's the feeling you get when something goes wrong. At the end of the day, it's still your pet. It ain't your son, your daughter, your brother, your sister." ================================================== Cheltenham market movers Betfred: Faugheen (1.30) 11-8 (from 7-4), Dell’ Arca (2.40) 11-1 (from 14), Special Tiara (3.20) 12-1 (from 16), Bishopsfurze (4.00) 12-1 (from 16), Ivan Grozny (4.40) 8-1 (from 10). ======================================================== Geraghty rides More Of That in World Hurdle Barry Geraghty has landed the Ladbrokes World Hurdle ride on More Of That for JP McManus, owner of his Champion Hurdle winner Jezki. ====================================================== ‘Staggering’ support for Neptune favourite Faugheen A FLOOD of cash for Faugheen has seen the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle favourite cut into 11-8 (from 9-4) to give trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh a flying start at Cheltenham for the second successive day. ===================================================== View from the clerk Cheltenham clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: “We had a dry night and I’ve left the going description as it was. The good to soft is primarily in the chute and I would say it is marginally quicker than the backend of yesterday.” 3 hours ago. ====================================================== Neptune non-runner Royal Boy is lame and has been withdrawn from the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle. The Nicky Henderson-trained Grade 1 winner had been a 7-1 chance for today's opening race at Cheltenham. ==========================================================
