================================== 14:40 Thursday 6th March Racing Tips - 06/03/2014
The first of the Wincanton handicaps is a pretty weak race for its class though it does have a strong favourite. On form Dynamic Idol is the stand out pick but backing a 2/1 shot returning form a year off that is up 11lb is not everyone's cup of tea, certainly not mine. King Ozzy could outrun his price and the yard are going well, I just wonder if this ground will be a little on the heave side for him. Most appealing at the prices is Enchanting Smile at 7/2 for a team that has hit the crossbar a few times of late but remain in good form. She is a young, improving mare over fences and looks as though she could surpass a hurdles rating of 97 in time. A mark of 88 here should give her a realistic opportunity. It is up in class from last time but her effort on penultimate start was impressive and the form looks solid enough. She will certainly be at home in the ground. WIncanton 15.00 - Enchanting Smile 1pt win
Interesting that Nick Scholfield isn't on Quaddick Lake this afternoon but Chris Meehan is given a chance with his 10lb claim. He has won here but you'd perhaps have wanted to see more in recent starts to be confident backing him and the stable isn't firing on all cylinders at present. The favourite is likeable but this ground is a question mark for him, for all he looks well treated. A safe play would be Helium at 6/1 who has held Chesil Beach Boy on 2 recent starts. He is 2lb higher for his Taunton win but is arguably still well treated on his from of a few years ago and not old enough to rule out more improvement. There should be a bit of pace on here and that will suit given he's been placed over further. Moujik Borget is surely better than his current mark but has disappointed in 2 starts since winning at Haydock and was held by the selection last time. WIncanton 15.35 - Helium 1pt e/w
Carlisle looks destined for heavy ground too today. That will suit Snuker who returns after a trip too far last time. This will be sharp for him though and he'll likely try and take them along at a good gallop to ensure a real test. He is 6lb higher than his last win and I just wonder if he's had his moment for the season. Hidden Horizons should be favourite for me and is therefore a solid option at 7/2. She is back in trip from last time where, unlucky to unseat after being hampered, she may not have seen out 2 miles 7 furlongs. This 2 furlong shorter trip, and a proper test at it, should see her to better effect, though it is a better contest up against the boys. She has a rider on top that has a super record on her in points and, crucially, claims 7lb so I fancy she has a bit in hand with the handicapper. Russe Blanc deserves a mention but he will not want a stamina test in this ground. Carlisle 14:40 - Hidden Horizons 2pt win ==========================================

Champagne Fever has a fantastic record at the Cheltenham Festival, winning the Champion Bumper and Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in the last two years.
It takes a special horse to win at the Festival, let alone three races in a row. Can Willie Mullins’ talented grey claim his third consecutive Grade 1 win at the Festival by winning this year’s Arkle?
We’re offering 3/1 he does!
All the best, The William Hill Team

The Gary Moore-trained Sire De Grugy features among 12 six-day acceptors for the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham. ![http://e2.365dm.com/14/01/640/Sire-De-Grugy_3068717.jpg?20140118163243](http://e2.365dm.com/14/01/640/Sire-De-Grugy_3068717.jpg?20140118163243) Sire De Grugy: Bids to open his Cheltenham account Moore's six-year-old skipped the Festival last term, instead signing off his campaign with a taking success in the Celebration Chase at Sandown in April. His improvement has continued this season, winning four of his five outings including two at the highest level. Sire De Grugy's only defeat came when beaten by Kid Cassidy at Prestbury Park in November and Nicky Henderson's challenger could renew rivalry on Wednesday on the back of a disappointing run at Leopardstown over Christmas. Henderson also has Captain Conan to call upon and he is another who can boast a victory over Sire De Grugy having lowered his colours in a novice event in November 2012. Paul Nicholls relies on second-season novice Hinterland, who has won twice at Sandown this season, while the Tom George-trained Module is set to line up after landing the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury last month. Henry De Bromhead's 12-year-old Sizing Europe won the two-mile championship contest in 2011 and, having chased home Sprinter Sacre last year, returns for another crack. De Bromhead has also left Special Tiara in at the six-day stage. Willie Mullins could run Arvika Ligeonniere, while fellow Irish challengers Baily Green and Benefficient remain in contention despite having alternative engagements in the Ryanair Chase on Thursday. The two others in the mix are Philip Hobbs' Wishfull Thinking and Somersby from the Mick Channon yard.

The market principals all stood their ground for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham next Wednesday, although a number of the 23 horses that remain engaged have alternative entries at the Festival. ![http://e2.365dm.com/13/07/640/Carlingford-Lough_2980649.jpg?20130731201007](http://e2.365dm.com/13/07/640/Carlingford-Lough_2980649.jpg?20130731201007) Carlingford Lough: Set to be ridden by McCoy in the RSA Chase Willie Mullins has Ballycasey, who has headed the betting for the last few weeks, still in the contest, along with Champagne Fever, the ante-post favourite for the Racing Post Arkle Trophy. Others expected to line up in alternative races, who have had their options kept open, include National Hunt Chase favourite Foxrock, Double Ross, who is expected to line up in the JLT Chase, and leading handicap fancies such as Holywell and Green Flag. Paul Nicholls has Just A Par, Sam Winner and Black Thunder still in the contest, while the Irish contingent includes the Pat Fahy-trained Morning Assembly, and John Kiely's Carlingford Lough, who unseated Tony McCoy at the final fence when hampered on his latest start behind Ballycasey in the Dr P.J. Moriarty Chase at Leopardstown. Corrin Wood, trained by Donald McCain, the Emma Lavelle-trained Le Bec, and Alan King's Smad Place give strength to the home team.

15:40 Friday 7th March Racing Tips - 07/03/2014
A strong class 3 handicap at Sandown sees 3 very progressive looking winners line up. Of them, preference would be for Spencer Lea and I think he should be favourite. This is a step up in class for the other 2 but Spencer Lea has the least improvement to find on paper and was better value than the winning margin at Ludlow given he clouted the last. However, I'm keen to have a go at the price about San Telm for a yard having a good year thus far. He was a chase winner off 3lb lower back in December on good to soft ground and unseated next in a hot contest. 2 runs over hurdles since have come over too far and on really testing ground and that just doesn't suit. At 14/1, he will be doing very well to beat all the 3 improvers but I can see him in the frame back on a slightly sounder surface and over a more gettable trip. Sandown 15.40 - San Telm 1pt e/w
Earlier in the day sees Greywell Boy looking to win the race he won last year and he's 4lb higher this afternoon. On the basis of that form you'd have to say that bottom weight Coolbeg is very well treated but he comes here in no sort of form. Greywell Boy ran really well last time from a couple of pounds out of the handicap and drops in class for this. He's not a big price at 15/8 but is a justified favourite and nothing else is big enough to warrant taking him on. The yard is going well and Richard Johnson is a very positive booking. The chase course is soft, good to soft in places so I'll have a reserved bet just incase it firms up before racing as he wants plenty of cut. Bullet Street is close behind in the betting and rightly so but I'm not sure his mark is all that lenient and, whilst placed on his last 2 starts, he hasn't looked like troubling the winner. Sandown 14.30 - Greywell Boy 2pt win
Ayr may not make it but it's worth having a go at The Tracey Shuffle if it does. There will be plenty of overnight rain and the French bred 3 year old has won on heavy before. I can't quite believe he isn't favourite and makes plenty of appeal at 9/4. The worry is that I've been stung with him before but that was when he was succumbing to Tap Nght and this is so much easier, even with some disappointing French efforts behind him. I trust Brian Ellison to get a horse ready on first start for the yard and Nathan Moscrop is worthy of his 7lb claim. The potential favourite is Island Heights but I'm not sure he's all that well treated and this will be some ask for a 5 year old that's never been this far in such conditions. By Heron Island, he'd surely prefer better ground and his sole point win came on good so he looks very opposable. Ayr 14.50 - The Tracey Shuffle 3pt win ============================================= ROBIN GOODFELLOW SELECTIONS... AYR

Leading Stan James Champion Hurdle hope Our Conor is reported to have settled in well after arriving at Cheltenham on Thursday evening. ![http://e0.365dm.com/14/01/768x576/our-conor-hurricane-fly-full_3073003.jpg?20140126152110](http://e0.365dm.com/14/01/768x576/our-conor-hurricane-fly-full_3073003.jpg?20140126152110) Our Conor: Has settled in well at Cheltenham The Dessie Hughes-trained five-year-old was a stunning winner of the Triumph Hurdle at last year's Festival and has run well in defeat behind dual Champion Hurdle hero Hurricane Fly twice at Leopardstown this season. Although he does not face his date with destiny until Tuesday afternoon, Hughes, who saddled Hardy Eustace to win successive renewals of the Champion Hurdles in 2004 and 2005, was keen to get his youngster to Prestbury Park in good time. Hughes said: "He's settled in well. He ate up last night and has had plenty of water. He's been out on the track this morning and seems fine. "He came over with Lieutenant Colonel, who runs in the race on Wednesday (Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle). "I was keen to bring him (Our Conor) over with just one other horse and everything seems to have gone well so far. "The first night is always important when they're away from home, but he's come through that well and can only get better from here on in. "We're very pleased with him and we're looking forward to the day now." Hughes revealed the rest of his Festival team would travel to Cheltenham on Sunday.

Oxfordshire-based trainer Charlie Longsdon takes a strong team to this year's Cheltenham Festival, led by Pendra in the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Charlie-Longsdon_3019852.jpg?20131016143759](http://e0.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Charlie-Longsdon_3019852.jpg?20131016143759) Charlie Longsdon: Preparing his Cheltenham team The JP McManus-owned six-year-old was a disappointing favourite for last year's Coral Cup and is expected to be more streetwise with another year on his back. Longdson said: "Pendra is definitely our most high-profile horse of the week and he's certainly got his chance. "He's potentially well-handicapped and it's nice to have a horse so high in the betting in a race at the Festival." Wednesday's card could see a whole host of runners from Hull Farm, including Killala Quay who is expected to run in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle. "Killala Quay is in good form at home. He was wrong last time at Warwick and he hated the ground for a start. Before that he was a Grade Two winner at Sandown and there was no fluke in that. I think he could go well." The Coral Cup is the aim Magnifique Etoile, who has not been seen since falling in the Coral Hurdle at Ascot behind Annie Power and Zarkandar. Before that the Kayf Tara gelding was a highly impressive winner of a Stratford handicap in October. Longsdon said: "Magnifique Etoile is absolutely fine at the moment and is all geared up and ready to roll. The handicapper stuck him up 18lb for winning at Stratford which is quite hard on him. "We are limited to what we can run him in off 148 but he will certainly run his race even if he is a few pounds too high in the weights." Two further hopes for the yard also plan to run on the Wednesday. Our Kaempfer, last seen finishing an eye-catching third behind Red Sherlock at the Open meeting, will take his chance in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper. Longsdon said: "He's a really nice horse for the future. I'm expecting him to improve a stone from his last run in November." With no planned runners in the Pertemps and Byrne Group Plate despite entries, Longsdon's last runners of the week are likely to be Shantou Magic and Hazy Tom in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle. He said: "Both Shantou Magic and Hazy Tom are likely to head for the Martin Pipe. They're handicapped to run well at least."

This year's Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom will be run in commemoration of three-time winner St Nicholas Abbey. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/07/768x576/St-Nicholas-Abbey-2013-1_2976964.jpg?20130723113829](http://e1.365dm.com/13/07/768x576/St-Nicholas-Abbey-2013-1_2976964.jpg?20130723113829) St Nicholas Abbey: Honoured by Epsom Aidan O'Brien's multiple Group One winner won the Coronation Cup twice under the trainer's son Joseph and once in the hands of Ryan Moore, but sadly passed away earlier this year following a lengthy battle with injury and subsequent complications. St Nicholas Abbey is the most successful horse in the history of a race first run in 1902 and Epsom's head of racing and clerk of the course Andrew Cooper feels it is a fitting tribute to run the race in his honour. Cooper said: "In completing the unique achievement of winning three consecutive Investec Coronation Cups, St Nicholas Abbey left an indelible impression on all of us at Epsom. "We followed his brave fight to recover from serious injury with keen interest and with our fingers crossed. "We are grateful to Coolmore for allowing us to honour this magnificent racehorse at this year's Investec Derby Festival." The race will be titled the Investec Coronation Cup (In commemoration of St Nicholas Abbey).

=========================================== 14:05 Saturday 8th March Racing Tips - 08/03/2014
Both the Pipe pairing look nice types for the EBF Final at Sandown and Knight Of Noir would get preference. However, I'm loath to put up a 5/1 shot in a race like this. So many are making handicap debuts and I like Horizontal Speed who won very encouragingly last time at Taunton. This could be a decent test and he's got plenty of stamina, especially given the way the others finished last time. Preference just goes to the less experienced and potentially less exposed Gone Too Far who has bumped into some very classy novices on his last 2 starts and looks very well treated. He shouldn't mind this ground on breeding and a better pace than he had last time at the trip should suit his stayers pedigree. I think he will be shorter than 8/1 come the off. One other at a big price worth a punt is Saffron Wells who won decisively on handicap debut. He is bred to handle heavy ground but conditions last time were so bad that perhaps we can forgive him. He was also in that race to qualify for this, a long term target, though I fancy connections weren't too fussed about winning it. He has plenty to find with Doctor Harper but that runner really controlled the race out in front and this is likely to be run at a stronger gallop. His mark still looks workable and, though this is a really classy race, he's interesting at 33/1. Sandown 14.05 - Gone Too Far 1pt e/w Sandown 14.05 - Saffron Wells 1pt e/w
The next test comes over 3 miles 1 on better ground than the hurdlers are likely to face. I backed Chartreux last time when an unlucky faller but simply can't have him for this over a stiffer test where he's likely to be taken on for the lead, not at 4/1 anyway. I'm reluctant to go for any of the front runners but it looks as though one of them is likeliest to prevail and preference is for the stoutest stayer. De La Bech has contested 3 miles 4 but really didn't see it out and, though this looks his best trip, he probably wants to be able to dominate on better ground. Soll made all in this race last year off 2lb lower and wasn't stopping at the finish. He hasn't been firing of late but really is a course lover and a drop in trip from the 2 miles 5 he faced last time is sure to suit. His best effort this term came here over 2 miles 6 on decent ground and, though he's a winner on heavy, he is by Presenting and the drying ground could be in his favour today. 11/2 is a fair price and this should be run to suit. Sandown 14.40 - Soll 1pt win
I'm not a big fan of putting up John Ferguson horses. They are rarely decent value and the last time I backed one it was thumped. So why I'm putting up New Year's Eve, a horse that has been a beaten favourite on 3 of his last 6 starts is beyond me. But, there again, he has looked a different horse since being fitted with a hood and is still well treated for this on the basis of his novice form, not to mention his 2nd in the Champion Bumper. He was also a 6 length 2nd to Ptit Zig off levels a year ago so if the hood has cracked it then he's definitely well treated off 130. Dropping back in trip from a slowly run affair should be no trouble in this bigger field and, 4 from 4 with Jack Quinlan on top, 12/1 is bigger than it should be. We also have last year's Champion Bumper 2nd in Regal Encore and he has twice been a beaten favourite since going over hurdles. He is potentially well treated but no bet as a 7/2 shot. Sandown 14.05 - New Year's Eve 1pt e/w ====================================

N OTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
The 2m 4½f handicap chase at Southwell's Monday meeting earlier this week looked a reasonably competitive renewal and BALZACCIO showed enough with his effort to finish second behind the winning favourite to suggest that he can make his mark over fences in the near future. Balzaccio, a nine-year-old gelding trained by Feargal O'Brien, may not have won since the autumn of 2011, but he is a fairly consistent horse. Trained by Alan King until the summer of 2012, he switched to O'Brien and made his sta- ble debut in a 2m 4f handicap hurdle at Wincan- ton last November. Although he had his favoured good ground, he just looked as though he would come on for the run, which he was entitled to, not having run since April 2012. With the recent weather making much of the going testing for most Jumps meetings since Balzaccio's return to action, it was no surprise that connections elected not to run him between Wincanton and his latest run at Southwell. The soft ground wouldn't have been ideal for him, but he travelled well enough and just looked a bit toothless at the business end of the race. He can improve for this run and was not disgraced in finishing second, beaten less than two lengths. Watch out for him over fences at distances between 2m 4f and 3m, with the expectation of better ground as we head into spring. Donald McCain looked to have a potentially useful winner at Sedgefield last Sunday, TAKE THE CASH appeared to be well-suited by the step up in trip to 2m 4f on his hurdling debut in the National Hunt novices' hurdle. The five-year-old Cloudings gelding looked outpaced over 2m in a Catterick bumper on his stable debut in late January, which was logical given that he had finished second in a 3m Point-to-Point for his previous connections last November. At the end of this latest start, he still looked full of running and he looks like a 3m chaser in the fullness of time, with possibly more to come in novices' hur- dles in the meantime. At Huntingdon's meeting last Sunday, another of Donald McCain's horses caught the eye in the 2m 5f maiden hurdle. SILVER GENT had won a 3m Point-to-Point in Ireland before joining McCain's Bankhouse Stables, and shaped reasonably well when second in a heavy-ground 2m 1f bumper at Sedgefield on his stable debut. On this latest start, he was just too keen in the early stages of the race, and used too much energy to have anything in reserve for the end. He finished one place behind Alan King's PIRATES CAY , who also spoiled his prospects in this race by pulling too hard. Like Silver Gent, Pirates Cay was also a win- ning Pointer over 3m and deserves another chance when the better ground arrives. A day earlier, the Keith Reveley-trained KINGS GREY looked in need of a step up in trip when a one-paced, running-on fourth in the 2m handicap chase. He finished clear of the remainder, and al- though he has won previously over 2m, his most recent win was over 2m 5f. He has won on ground ranging between good and soft, and started this latest race with a handicap rating of 137, just 2lb higher than his last winning rating. He's not in the first flush of youth at 10 years of age, but he may have a handicap or two in him when he gets his optimum conditions. ================================================== Race Ratings Saturday 8 March - 2.20 Wolverhampton Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) (4yo+) 7f 32y
43-812 Alben Star 28 6 Richard Fahey Consistent son of Clodovil who has won three times at this course, including two starts ago. Narrowly held last time, when staying on in 6f Class 2 hand- icap at Lingfield, but has yet to win over further than 6f. Steps up in class to Listed company for first time today, but not ruled out. RATING 95 11-315 Alfred Hutchinson 14 6 Geoffrey Oldroyd Son of Monsieur Bond who has gently-improved by 25lb in the ratings in the last three seasons. Has winning form at this course over 9f, but latest winning form has been over 8f and 7f, and, although he has a bit to find with those who are regularly campaigned at this level, he has the stamina to see out a strongly-run renewal of this race. RATING 96 22-303 Bertiewhittle 14 6 David Barron Third, beaten less than two lengths by Grey Mirage (Alfred Hutchinson fifth, Dr Red Eye eighth), in a hand- icap a fortnight ago. Meets that winner on 3lb better terms today and was also second on the all-weather at this level previously. Respected. RATING 96 22-218 Chookie Royale 14 6 Keith Dalgleish Has won at 9f, but majority of wins have been over 7f and wasn't seen to best effect over 10f in Winter Derby last time, when slowly away and looked as though he didn't stay the distance. Beaten a head by Grey Mirage (Alfred Hutchinson fourth) at level-weights in a conditions race in January. May find a few too good today. RATING 94 8005-8 Dr Red Eye14 6 Scott Dixon Not beaten that far by Grey Mirage when attempt- ing to make all in a 7f handicap at Lingfield last time. That was his first run in five months, so could improve for the run, but still looks someway short of the best of these and isn't an obvious contender for outright honours. RATING 92 2522-5 Emell 10 4 Richard Hannon Shaped as though he needed the run last time at Kempton and last season's form looks solid at this level, finishing second behind a proven Listed/Group campaigner at Windsor, and also ahead of Lockwood, who won next two starts, including a Group 3 race and was then second in the Group 2 Park Stakes. One of the least exposed horses in the field. RATING 99 01295- Gabriel ́s Lad 147 5 Denis Coakley Progressive form of 2012 carried over to last sea- son combined with increase in trip from 6f to 7f. Class 2 Newmarket handicap win off a mark of 95, was followed by a close second to a good horse off a mark of 99 next time. Good ninth in the Ayr Gold Cup and not disgraced when staying on in possibly unsuitably soft ground on Group-race debut at end of season. Has claims here. RATING 97 24006- Global Village 175 9 Brian Ellison Form when second in the Lincoln and fourth in Newbury's Spring Cup gives this ageing campaigner a sniff of a chance in this company, although is re- turning from a near six-month break. The Lincoln looks the plan again, and not out of it here on best form, but needs to be pin-sharp first time out to have chance of being placed, let alone winning. RATING 93 9301-6 Hasopop 14 4 Marco Botti Was tried at Group level without success at two, but has improved with maturity, finishing third in the Listed Surrey Stakes last season and was then a solid third in a Class 2 Ascot handicap. Entitled to respect on that form, but has finished behind a few of his rivals here on previous starts and oth- ers preferred. RATING 96 46517- Highland Knight 112 7 Andrew Balding Officially, the highest-rated horse in the race, on a mark of 108, and has emerged as a genuine Group- class contender in last two seasons. Often ran well in defeat last year, but rounded off campaign with a fine Group 3 win on penultimate start. Carries a penalty for that win, but has winning form on the all- weather and should still go close. RATING 99 312-11 Grey Mirage 14 5 Marco Botti Son of Oasis Dream who has been on an upward curve this winter, winning two conditions races over distance and a valuable handicap last time. Broke the track record on that occasion, and just looks to have the momentum to carry him for- ward on this step up in class. RATING 100 74-723 Hinton Admiral 7 10 Pat Eddery A veteran of 88 races who has not run to anything near his best form for a good number of seasons. Although placed in recent starts, those results have been achieved at a much lower level. Up against it in this company. RATING 86 18-007 Intransigent 16 5 Andrew Balding Consistent performer last summer, finishing second in a Chester Listed race and valuable Goodwood handicap. Followed up with a fair win over decent benchmark Firebeam in a 7f conditions race at Hay- dock's Sprint Cup meeting. Recent starts in Dubai have been underwhelming and while this race may be a little less competitive, Intransigent still has a bit to prove at this level. RATING 96 6432- Kenny Powers 364 5 Tom Dascombe Twice placed in Listed company, including in this race last year and unraced since. Clearly has abil- ity and has run well in defeat, but best form is still short of a couple of rivals and fitness is taken on trust in this company on first appearance in 12 months. RATING 95 04660- Regal Parade 140 10 Milton Bradley A grand old campaigner who has won at the high- est level in years past. Still ran well last term, win- ning a conditions race in May, but was held in good handicaps subsequently, and, although not completely out of the equation, looks more likely to be one of the also-rans here. RATING 93 70-009 Santefisio 16 8 Keith Dalgleish Form of last season's fourth in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot gives this son of Efisio an each-way squeak in this company, but latest three runs in Dubai were not at that level and others make more appeal. RATING 96 ========================================= STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
Jason Maguire has been in red-hot form in the sad- dle in the last week (to Monday, 3 March), riding 10 winners, more than any other Jump jockey in the period. Maguire's 41% strike rate took some beating, with only Barry Geraghty (55%) achieving this. On the Flat, the jockey to beat was Andrea Atzeni (6 wins/40%). Top Jumps trainer was Nicky Henderson (7 wins/63%), ahead of Donald McCain (4 wins/23%), with trainer Mark Johnston dominating the Flat scene, with 4 wins and a 33% strike rate. Nicky Henderson has a leading record with his run- ners at Sandown, which is one of the meetings to be televised this Saturday by Channel 4 (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.50), along with the Flat action from Wolverhampton (2.20 and 2.55). Look out for Hen- derson's Full Shift in the 2.05 at Sandown, the Grade 3 novices' handicap hurdle. The trainer has won this race twice in the last three years and has trained more winners at this course in the past five seasons than any other trainer with entrants in the race. The one possible negative is the expected heavy ground which may help David Pipe's Doctor Harper, who won in very testing conditions by a clear margin last time and has also won at the course previously. Pipe has also enjoyed a 33% winning strike rate with his runners in the past 14 days. Wolverhampton's Lincoln Trial (2.55) has been won eight times in the past 10 years by a runner who was prominent in the betting, so keep a close eye on the markets for this race. David Simcock's Noble Citizen is hardly unexposed as a nine-year-old vet- eran of more than 70 starts, but he has been in good form lately, winning his last three races and the stable has a good, long-term 17% strike rate at the course. Alternatively, Michael Bell (50% strike rate past fortnight) has an interesting entrant in Fashion Line, who is unbeaten in two starts over course, distance and going. His provisional jockey booking of Louis Steward is appealing, thanks to the jockey's 40% strike rate in the past 14 days. ==================================
RACING NEWS.
Ace jockey Johnny Murtagh has hung up his riding boots to concentrate on his training career. Murtagh, 43, made the announcement last week, on the back of a highly successful 2013 season during which he won four races at Royal Ascot and also the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the QEII Stakes. In a career spanning 26 years, Murtagh rode 106 Group 1 winners and won three Derbys and four Irish Derbys. Trainer Willie Mullins has confirmed that his unbeaten mare Annie Power will take on Big Buck's in the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next week. Mullins reported that Ruby Walsh, who rode Big Buck's to all four of his World Hurdle wins to date, will ride Annie Power in the race, and will also ride Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle and Quevega in the David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle. Nicky Henderson has reported that his Hennessy Gold Cup winner Triolo D'Alene will head to the Gold Cup after pleasing the champion trainer in a workout alongside his stablemate and last year's Gold Cup winner, Bobs Worth. Barry Geraghty is set to ride Bobs Worth, but no jockey booking has been announced for Triolo D'Alene. Connections of the Edward O'Grady-trained Sailors Warn were delighted by his victory over three-time Grade 1 winner Thousand Stars in the Ballsbridge Hurdle at Leopardstown last weekend. Taking into account their race-weights and official ratings, Sailors Warn had 16lb to find with Thousand Stars, but travelled very well through the race under Barry Geraghty and won comfortably. Bookmakers responded by cutting Sailors Warn to 16/1 for the County Hurdle and Martin Pipe Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next week, but O'Grady said he wasn't sure if the horse would be heading to Prestbury Park. Bookmaker William Hill reported increased operating profits of £335m for 2013, over £4m up on the previous year. The bookmaker attributed the profits to its online betting services and increased activity in international markets. The Keith Reveley-trained Night In Milan earned himself shortened odds for next month's Grand National after winning the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster last weekend. Ridden by the trainer's son, James, Night In Milan won by a clear margin at 14/1, and Paddy Power reacted by cutting him from 66/1 to 50/1 for the Aintree feature race. Keith Reveley reported that he would prefer to see Night In Milan in the Topham Chase this season, and in the National in 2015. Trainer Venetia Williams's run of form continued into March when she landed a pair of valuable handicap chases at Newbury last Saturday, including the Grade 3 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, won by Shangani. The winner defied the Paul Nicholls-trained Rebel Rebellion and will now head to Cheltenham for the Byrne Group Plate. Trainer Peter Niven's Clever Cookie completed a hat trick of wins last Saturday when winning the Grade 2 Premier Kelso Hurdle, which may provide the stepping stone to the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. However, Niven thinks that the seven-year-old may not be ready for a race like the County Hurdle just yet, and is looking towards Aintree for his next run. ===================================

Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti feature among 17 possibles at the confirmation stage for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday, for which On His Own has been supplemented at a cost of £27,500. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/03/640/bobsworth_2915668.jpg?20130315162149](http://e1.365dm.com/13/03/640/bobsworth_2915668.jpg?20130315162149) Bobs Worth: Bidding for back-to-back wins in the Gold Cup The Willie Mullins-trained On His Own had been geared towards another crack at the Crabbie's Grand National but having won the Thyestes Chase he followed up with an easy success in the Bobbyjo Chase, prompting a rethink from connections. Mullins said afterwards "he's just going out of handicaps and could win a really good race", nominating the Punchestown Gold Cup as an option. As well as defending champion Bobs Worth, Nicky Henderson is represented by Hennessy hero Triolo D'Alene. Paul Nicholls' Silviniaco Conti was still going well when falling three out in last year's renewal and advertised his chance in winning the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, but the Ditcheat trainer has been forced to rule out Rocky Creek who is suffering from a bout of ringworm. The eight-year-old, runner-up in the Hennessy and Argento Chase in his two outings this season, will now be aimed at the Grand National at Aintree next month. Nicholls wrote in his Betfair blog: "The good news is that it is treatable in time to re-route him to the Grand National once again, and we will now prepare him for Aintree. "Of course, it is hugely frustrating as I thought he was going to Cheltenham with a live outside chance in the Gold Cup, but it is not an injury as such and we still have a big target to aim him at this season." Philip Fenton's Irish Hennessy winner Last Instalment and the Mouse Morris-trained First Lieutenant add further strength to the raiding party from Ireland, with owners Gigginstown House Stud also having Tony Martin's Bog Warrior in the race. Irish runners feature further in the shape of last year's RSA Chase winner Lord Windermere (Jim Culloty) and Lyreen Legend (Dessie Hughes). Captain Chris represents Philip Hobbs, while Sue Smith has Cloudy Too and George Charlton fields Knockara Beau, who was the shock conqueror of Big Buck's in the Cleeve Hurdle in January. The Giant Bolster has been fourth and second in the last two renewals and stands his ground for David Bridgwater, with Venetia Williams another double-handed through Houblon Des Obeaux and Katenko. Kim Bailey is praying for rain to boost the claims of Harry Topper and leading Crabbie's Grand National fancy Teaforthree is set to take his chance for Rebecca Curtis.

A total of 26 runners remain in contention for next Friday's JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. ![http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/640/Calipto-Newbury-Nicholls-FULL_3080256.jpg?20140208135408](http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/640/Calipto-Newbury-Nicholls-FULL_3080256.jpg?20140208135408) Calipto: Heads the Triumph Hurdle entries The big names towards the top of the market have all stood their ground with Calipto and Le Rocher representing Paul Nicholls and Nick Williams respectively. Alternative targets have been mooted for both Activial and Goodwood Mirage but connections have left their options open by leaving their juveniles in the Grade One contest. Willie Mullins has five runners to choose from as horses from his yard form the bulk of a 12 strong Irish entry that includes leading fancies Guitar Pete and Tiger Roll as well as Plinth from the Ballydoyle yard of Aidan O'Brien. John Ferguson's impressive Musselburgh winner Broughton remains engaged while John Quinn could run both Rutherglen and Pearl Castle.

Willie Mullins has kept his options open with his star novice hurdlers with a raft of them appearing among the six-day acceptors for the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham. ![http://e0.365dm.com/14/01/640/briar-hill-apache-jack-full_3062023.jpg?20140105140823](http://e0.365dm.com/14/01/640/briar-hill-apache-jack-full_3062023.jpg?20140105140823) Briar Hill: Expected to lead the Willie Mullins charge on the Albert Bartlett Briar Hill is expected to be his leading contender in the Grade One contest but Faugheen, Perfect Gentlemen, Rathvinden, Renneti, Sure Reef, Urano, Valseur Lido and Vautour also appear among the declarations. Kings Palace is the leading British hope, trained by David Pipe, who has taken Red Sherlock out. Nicky Henderson has Captain Cutter and Royal Boy engaged while Oliver Sherwood's Deputy Dan is prominent in the betting. Champagne West stands his ground for the Philip Hobbs team with Urban Hymn and Blakemount, who fought out an epic battle at Doncaster last time, set to renew rivalry.

NICKY HENDERSON and Paul Nicholls have issued a plea to Cheltenham's clerk of the course Simon Claisse not to water the track for the four biggest days in the jump racing calendar.
Drying conditions have raised the possibility that the track may need to be watered to prevent the ground becoming too quick, particularly on the New course which is being used on Thursday and Friday.
The two top trainers were speaking at a forum after racing at Sandown on Saturday but by then Claisse had already moved to allay similar fears expressed by another trainer, Keith Reveley.
Henderson said: "I do sincerely hope they don't water, it would be a tragedy. You have got to let nature take its course. If nature says it's good ground, let them run on good ground and let the good-ground horses get their opportunity.
"Why should the good- ground horses be penalised just because they want to slow it down? It's wrong."
Nicholls told the forum of a lengthy discussion with Claisse on Friday night. He said: "I spoke to Simon at length and I know he is worried it might dry up.
"Simon's concern is the track might get quicker by Thursday and Friday and whether he should water this weekend to make sure it doesn't. It's a gamble to take and it has been so wet."
The ground was altered slightly to good to soft after another drying day at Cheltenham on Saturday.
Claisse removed soft in places from the going description and said: "We'll monitor the situation on the New course depending on the rate at which that course dries out.
"I said to several trainers yesterday that our record of doing what we need to do to ensure safe ground over the years has been pretty good."
The going on the cross-country course was given on Saturday as good to soft, soft in places. =============================================== USA: Top Billing out of Triple Crown with injury Leading Kentucky Derby contender Top Billing sustained an injury during a workout on Saturday morning and will miss the Triple Crown. =============================================== At Fishers Cross schooling "brilliantly" says Curtis Rebecca Curtis says her World Hurdle hope "is as good as we have ever had him". She said: "He schooled brilliantly on Friday. Everybody seems to think he needs soft or heavy but I am of the opinion he's better on goodish ground." ================================================= Gold Cup ride on Triolo staying in house Nicky Henderson says Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup mount on Hennessy hero Triolo D'Alene is likely to "stay in house", so ruling out the option of Tony McCoy. ================================================ Scoop6 grows bigger and bigger The Scoop6 could reach £1.5 million in combined funds next Saturday after there was no fairytale ending for the bonus hunter at Sandown. The bonus fund, which can not be won next week, is £911,622 while the win fund starts at £77,135. ==================================================== Hinterland heads for Champion Chase Trainer Paul Nicholls confirms during a Cheltenham preview event at Sandown racecourse that Hinterland runs in BetVictor Champion Chase (best price 12-1) as opposed to the Racing Post Arkle (12-1). ========================================================

17:00 Sunday 9th March Racing Tips - 09/03/2014
The pick of the races today comes from Ireland and a 14 runner field in the Leinster National. Of those at the head of the market I'd side with Los Amigos who's form looks solid and this is technically easier than the Thyestes last time. However, there's a bit more value in opting for Castle Wings at 8/1 for a yard having a fine year. He went very close here over hurdles off a 7lb higher mark and is particularly interesting on step back up to 3 miles. He could do without the ground drying out too much but is certainly capable of winning off this mark and is very consistent. Last time was lucky but it would have been no disgrace finishing a well held 2nd to the 140+ rated hurdler Blood Cotil and this is a very feasible task back in handicap company. The other just to have a speculative punt on is the returning French export Snooze at 18/1. He may need the run and John Cullen isn't exactly flying, though he did send 1 winner out in January from 4 runners (0-3 last month). This 8 year old is well treated off a mark of 123 if recapturing his form of some 14 months ago. That said, he put in some acceptable efforts on ground that may have been a touch quick at times in France towards the end of the summer and Ian McCarthy has a solid record on him. Naas 17.00 - Castle Wings 1pt e/w Naas 17.00 - Snooze 1pt e/w
Kim Muir Challenge Cup Well Rocky Creek is a blow and I wish I'd gone NRNB, though ringworm couldn't really have been foreseen. Spring Heeled is the last ante post bet to go into this year's festival portfolio and he should definitely be taken NRNB. He is likely to run in the Kim Muir or the 3 mile handicap chase on day 1 but I fancy the sterner test of the Kim Muir would suit better. The things against him are questionable yard form and jumping errors that he will not be able to get away with in this ultra competitive heat. Hoewever, this is an easier contest on paper (Class 2) than that which he faced over 3 miles 3 and a haf furlongs when he ran here behind Alvarado back in Novemeber. He loomed up menacingly 3 out before being carried wide and fading, clearly not seeing out the trip. 3 miles does look a touch sharp for him though, as was the case at Leopardstown last time when staying on after racing up with a strong pace on unsuitably soft ground. Both his last 2 successes came on good so the forecast is positive and he's 4lb lower than when last seen here. His form is very solid, namely behind subsequent winners Double Seven, Hidden Cyclone, and, going further back, He'llberemembered and Alderwood. That makes a mark of 138 look very workable. This owner usually goes with the capable Robbie McNamara in this type of race and they have tasted plenty of success together back in Ireland. He'll need to jump a great deal better but 25/1 will be a fair bit shorter on the day if he takes his place and there's plenty in his favour. Spring Heeled 1pt e/w NRNB
