A total of 14 runners have been declared for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday. Bobs Worth heads the lists for the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday The most notable absentee from the pack is Harry Topper, for whom, the ground has gone against, and a possible bid at the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter is being considered by trainer, Kim Bailey. Captain Chris, who had already been ruled out through injury, and Bog Warrior, were the other two runners to be scratched at the final declaration stage. Bryan Cooper will partner Last Instalment for the Gigginstown Stud in preference to First Lieutenant, who will be ridden by David Casey, although the participation of the former could yet be decided by the going. Reigning champion Bobs Worth is presently a hot favourite to defend his crown with King George VI Chase winner, Silviniaco Conti currently next best with the bookmakers. Thyestes winner, On Our Own has been confirmed by Willie Mullins while there is likely to be plenty of local support for The Giant Bolster, who was second to Synchronised in the 2012 Gold Cup and recently bounced back to form with victory in the Argento Chase in January. Recent market plunge, Triolo D'Alene will be ridden by Tony McCoy for Nicky Henderson and current favourite for the Crabbie's Grand National, Teaforthree also takes his chance. Knockara Beau reverts to fences having taken the scalp of Big Buck's over hurdles, and last year's first and second in the RSA Chase, Lord Windermere and Lyreen Legend will reoppose. The field is completed by Cloudy Too, Houblon Des Obeaux and Katenko.

Cheltenham, 12 March 2014
1.30, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference entering the home straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that BALLYALTON (IRE), placed second, ridden by Will Kennedy, had interfered with RATHVINDEN (IRE), placed third, ridden by Paul Townend, who in turn interfered with RED SHERLOCK, unplaced, ridden by Tom Scudamore, who in turn interfered with LIEUTENANT COLONEL, placed sixth, ridden by Bryan Cooper. The Stewards found Kennedy in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his horse to shift right handed, away from the whip. They suspended him for 3 days as follows: Wednesday 26, Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March 2014.
2.40, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Shane Shortall, the rider of OSCARS WELL (IRE), unplaced, from the second last flight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip when out of contention. The Stewards suspended Shortall for 5 days as follows: Wednesday 26, Thursday 27, Friday 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 March 2014.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by Davy Condon, the rider of BAYAN (IRE), placed third, from approaching the last flight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Condon for 2 days as follows: Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 March 2014.
4.00, fifth race

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why NICK THE ODDS (IRE), trained by Jo Hughes, was late arriving at the Parade Ring and was subsequently instructed to go straight to post by the Clerk of the Course. They interviewed the Clerk of the Scales, an Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer and the trainer’s representative. Having heard their evidence they accepted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that he had had difficulty fitting the tongue strap on NICK THE ODDS (IRE).
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, CHANCEUSE, ridden by David Probert and trained by Gay Kelleway, compared with its previous run at Kempton on 26 February 2014 where the filly finished ninth of ten beaten by approximately 9 lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that the filly appreciated both the step up in trip and stronger handling on this occasion. They ordered CHANCEUSE to be routine tested.
5.05, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SAMHAIN, ridden by Sean Levey and trained by David Brown, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding was a big, backward type and he had strengthened up over the winter. The Stewards ordered SAMHAIN to be routine tested.
5.35, seventh race

8.45, seventh race

12/03/2014 =================================================== ETTING THE SCENE FOR CHELTENHAM As Saturday’s William Hill Imperial Cup is often considered a late pointer to one of the Cheltenham handicap hurdles, especially with the lure of a bonus, we’ve drawn together a short piece comprising of last-minute information and a behind-the-scenes look at a couple of the less high-profile races for the week ahead. We hope you find it useful.
Bonus may hit the buffers
Baltimore Rock’s win in the Grade 3 William Hill Imperial Cup at Sandown on Saturday may only have set up a bonus attempt in theory, writes David Dickinson.
Still in the County Hurdle this week, the gelding needs upwards of 30 above him to come out at the overnight stage to get a run, even with his penalty. Saturday’s win was a continuance of the upward curve the horse has been on in recent weeks. Certainly, anyone who backed him when Loyaute beat him at Kempton must be feeling extra hard done by now.
I used the fifth home, Chesil Beach Boy, as my benchmark and have raised Baltimore Rock 9lb to 134, allowing the second home, Gassin Golf, 3lb for the length he was beaten in subsequent handicaps.
The fact that the Regal Encore bubble was burst, temporarily at least, is worthy of mention. Judging horses on the subsequent exploits of horses that beat them is fraught with danger. His Hexham conqueror in December, Seeyouatmidnight, might now be rated 155 but he was stepped up a mile in trip for his next two starts and horse that was third in that Hexham race has subsequently been beaten off 119 twice in handicaps.
With all roads leading to Prestbury this week, the official top rated horses in the 2m Championship hurdle races are Vautour (Supreme), Hurricane Fly (Champion) and Le Rocher (Triumph).
Bumper background
Anyone buying a racecard at Cheltenham will notice that there are ratings next to each horse in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, writes Mark Olley. The BHA does not publish official handicap ratings for horses in National Hunt Flat Races, though we do put performance figures to every horse in each race and these are the figures shown in the racecard.
We keep these figures so that we have an idea of each horse’s ability when it comes to the Bumpers at Cheltenham and Aintree and we have to decide which horses get in those races in the event that they are over-subscribed.
For anyone interested, and who does not have access to the Cheltenham racecard, the figures are listed below and you can see our idea of which horses have the best form so far.
136 Killultagh Vic; 130 Modus and Black Hercules; 129 Golantilla; 128 Vigil and Shaneshill; 127 Our Kaempfer; 124 Foryourinformation and Definitly Red; 123 Seven Nation Army; 122 Western Way, Value At Risk and Third Act; 121 Coyaba and Joshua Lane; 120 Zeroshadesofgrey; 119 Stack The Deck and Silver Concorde; 118 El Namoose and Assam Black; 117 Neck Or Nothing; 115 Izzini, Oscarteea and Great Try.
114 Mountain Of Mourne; 113 No Dice; 112 Royal Vacation; 107 Big Mike.
The second group are the horses that are involved in the elimination sequence and need horses to drop out at the over-night entry stage in order to get a run. For example Royal Vacation, trained by Colin Tizzard, needs three horses to come out to take his place in the line-up.
Foxhunter elimination
An interesting task I was faced with on Saturday was deciding the elimination sequence for the CGA Foxhunter Steeple Chase, writes Phil Smith. There were 28 entries and the safety limit was 24 so I had to find four horses to put in the sequence.
Gale Force Oscar was the first to be eliminated as although he had run three times I was unable to allocate the horse a rating because of insufficient information as he only had one measurable performance. The horse with the lowest rating was Up There on 91 so he became number two. Croan Rock (93) was number three and The Hollinwell (99) was number four.
However what to do with Ganbei who has never run under rules and who is therefore not entitled to a rating? I could have made him joint number one with Gale Force Oscar thus bringing The Hollinwell into the race. However I looked up his point to point form. This race is the only occasion I am allowed to use point to point form if I wish to.
That is because I am allowed to allocate one wild card which gives automatic entry into the race. I discovered that Ganbei has won his last two races in point to points and is the leading horse at North Carlton. It is very unusual for me to use the wild card and very risky of connections not to run the horse under rules. However Ganbei beat Ballyjames – currently rated 100 under rules – so this brought him out ahead of The Hollinwell.
I have only ever used the wild card once before for Mid Div And Creep in 2011. When I saw her starting odds of 100/1, I thought I must have made an error including her but she didn’t let me down and ran brilliantly to finish second to Zemsky.
I am hoping that this year’s wild card selection of Ganbei can also justify my selection of him. =================================================

The racing world will be watching as Big Buck's returns to the Festival in search of a fifth World Hurdle win. The Cheltenham legend is part of a huge team for Paul Nicholls on day three at Prestbury Park - here is his verdict on all those runners...
13:30, Cheltenham Wonderful Charm
Comes here in great form but we did have a little setback with him about a month ago. We found pus in his foot - in fact it was one of the worst cases we have seen here - but Clifford dealt with it, and it only set him back about three or four days. So only a minor issue and not a concern. And he does come here with the best credentials. His failure by only ½ length to give Oscar Whisky 8lb here over 2m5f in December is probably the best form on offer, it shows he acts on the track, and he has looked a natural since we sent him chasing. Good ground suits him well, and he must go into this with a leading chance, though of course it is a hugely competitive race.
14:05, Cheltenham Southfield Theatre
Last seen out when having a spin round in a jumpers' bumper at Kempton. Had earlier been in good form over hurdles this season, including when placed twice here, and he ran pretty well when third at Wincanton considering 2m6f and heavy ground wouldn't have brought out the best in him. I suspect that he is in the grip of the handicapper now - he has gone up 15lb this season - but track and trip and ground will suit, and hopefully there is more to come.
14:40, Cheltenham Al Ferof
Probably won one of the better Supremes at this meeting three years ago, and looked top-class once again when easily winning the Paddy Power last season. A leg injury then unfortunately curtailed his campaign but we gave him the rest that he needed, and we were obviously very happy with his comeback win in a two-runner race at Ascot in November. To be honest, we were a little disappointed with his third in the King George - even though it wasn't a bad effort form-wise at all against top-class horses - and then we tested his stamina over 3m at Newbury last time, but the desperate ground that day didn't help matters and we weren't hard on him once he was beaten. We then sat down and decided stepping him down to 2m5f would suit. He doesn't lack pace, the better ground will suit him and I think that he is primed to run his best race of the season. Hopefully, that will prove good enough but Benefficient, and maybe a peak-form Dynaste, will be hard to beat.
Kauto Stone
I keep on saying it, but if he ever comes back to the form of his defeat of First Lieutenant in a Grade 1 at Down Royal a couple of seasons ago then he will pop up at a big price in a Grade 1 somewhere. But on recent evidence that does look very unlikely, I admit. I think this trip on good ground should be fine, but the opposition and his recent lack of form is slightly more problematic.
15:20, Cheltenham Big Buck's
Well, there really isn't anything new to say is there? Everyone knows everything there is to know about this horse. He is a legend and if we can get him over the line to win his fifth World Hurdle then it would be right up there with Ditcheat's best and most satisfying achievements over the years. If he is the same horse that saw off all-comers year after year before his injury, then Annie Power and the rest will have to be out of the top-drawer to beat him, and I suppose that is the question for everyone to ask and answer for themselves. The bottom line is that we probably won't know until halfway up the run-in.
But I can tell you that everything about this horse's work and well-being since his comeback third here gives us plenty of encouragement. Yes, the form of his reappearance was a stone below his best, but we weren't expecting fireworks there and I think that he has come on more for that run than Silviniaco Conti did between finishing third in the Betfair Chase and winning the King George.
I am not going to make any predictions before the race, but I also won't be making any excuses after the race if he is beaten. He goes there in the best shape we can get him in and if the old fire is still burning, then we will see what the others are made of. One thing is for sure, they will need to stay every yard of this trip. But it is worth remembering that he is an 11yo now, and we saw with 10yo Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday that age can catch up with the best.
Celestial Halo
I made no secret of the fact that he would need the run pretty badly at Haydock last time after a setback, so I was surprised that he was sent off such a short-priced favourite and not too disappointed that he was beaten into third. He had earlier looked in great nick when making all at Newbury and of course he ran a stormer when second to Solwhit in this race last year, so write him off at your peril. Tactics-wise he is versatile; we can point and shoot with him, or ride him patiently like last year, so we will see how the race unfolds. But I doubt that this race will slowly-run.
Salubrious
I think that this horse may just surprise a few people. An easy winner of the Martin Pipe here last year, he has finished second on all three of his starts this season, but things haven't gone his way in any of those races and a bad mistake 2 out in the Long Walk last time cost him dear. Basically, I think that this horse is better than he has been able to show so far. He has a lot to find on form with most of these, but I reckon that there is a lot more to come and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was placed. Is a better horse on this better ground.
Zarkandar
Well, this is the Joker in my World Hurdle pack, or could he be the Ace? I have been dying to see what he can do over 3m on good ground and now he gets the chance. He was attempting the impossible trying to give lumps of weight to Annie Power, and racing against unlucky Champion Hurdle third The New One, earlier in the season, and I thought that he probably should have won over 2m at Wincanton last time. So he comes here in good form, with the prospect of better to come over this new trip on better ground. He looked like he would get further when beating The New One over 2m4f at Aintree last season - that form isn't too shabby in the context of any race - and I wouldn't be in a rush to dismiss him either. In fact, while I appreciate this is a pretty hot World Hurdle all round and we could be meeting an exceptional mare in Annie Power, and one getting 7lb, I genuinely think that I have four decent shots of winning it, and one good one.
16:40, Cheltenham There's No Panic
We sorted his breathing out in the summer and he finally came good under a peach of a ride from Daryl over 3m5f110yd at Sandown in December. Has the assistance of top amateur Will Biddick but this horse wouldn't be obviously well-handicapped, having gone up 5lb for that win, is better going right-handed and I have had some little niggles with him since Sandown, so he could just need this. Whatever happens, hopefully this will put him spot on for a crack at the Bet365 at Sandown next month.

Donald McCain is bidding to enhance his excellent record in the Kim Muir courtesy of Indian Castle in Thursday's finale.
Kim Muir Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup (3m1f) 16:40 - Indian Castle
It's a race we have had some success in over the years and I think he comes here as my best hope of the week. He seems in great form at home and everything has gone to plan since his win at the January meeting.
Going in to that race I wasn't sure quite where we stood with him - I had been disappointed with how he ran at Wetherby on his previous start - but he has proved he was favourably handicapped and a 5lb rise looks fair enough. He won't mind the better ground and the longer trip isn't going to be a problem for him.
We've got a top jockey booked so everything is in place for a big run - you can't be too confident with these Festival handicaps as they are so competitive but he's a lightly raced and progressive young horse who is potentially still ahead of his mark.

13:30 Thursday 13th March Racing Tips - 13/03/2014
On all known form Wonderful Charm should be favourite for the JLT so he's a must back at 11/2. The concern is that Paul Nicholls is yet to saddle a Cheltenham winner this week but his strongest chances come over the next few days and hopefully he can get the day off to a good start. He showed he handled the track last time out when giving 8lb to Oscar Whisky who has gone on to frank that form, albeit in modest style. Nicholls says he is best fresh and he clearlyy handles decent ground. Felix Yonger is a big threat in these conditions but, equally, he has stamina to prove and I'd have been keener on him in the Arkle. That said, the Irish 2 mile form is a fair bit stronger than the 3 mile and Mullins/Walsh are in superb form. I expect Taquin Du Seuil to be better over fences than he was over hurdles and he could be the main danger at a slightly bigger price. Cheltenham 13.30 - Wonderful Charm 1pt e/w
Philip Hobbs has a very strong hand in the Pertemps and all 3 of his runners are on my shortlist. Fingal Bay is the best in the race on form of old and is definitely still well treated. If In Doubt was beaten by the aforementioned and Saphir Du Rheu on his last 2 starts so we know he is a threat. However, they are both 7/1 and the last 10 winners of this have all been in double figures. Hobbs' 3rd string is a very progressive 2nd season hurdler who looks better the further he goes. Uncle Jimmy was 4th on good ground over 2 miles 5 here and that form has been franked by Whisper amongst others. He then showed he stays last time when scoring over 3 miles 1 at Wetherby. Ive been mpressed by claimer Thomas Cheesman all year and he has a shout today at 22/1. If he has a chance then so too must Crowning Jewel at 25/1. The Reveley's are flying at the moment and their 8 year old has won his last 2 starts on good ground. He gave Uncle Jimmy 6lb at Aintree in Ocotber over 2 and a half miles and won well. In reciept of 2lb this afternoon from the first selection, he shaped well after a break last month and I'm looking forward to seeing him at this trip now he has his ground. Cheltenham 14.05 - Crowning Jewel 1pt e/w Cheltenham 14.05 - Uncle Jimmy 1pt e/w
Al Ferof is a horse I'm happy to have onside for the Ryanair and is the pick of those at the top of the market. There is possibly a bit of value to be had at bigger prices though and Menorah and Merdemit wouldn't be shock winners given what they've shown in the past. A previous festival winner is worth noting on return and both Rajdhani Express and Hunt Ball are former novice handicap chase winners (last race, day 1). Plenty of Henderson horses have looked as though they needed it first time this year and the latter is a young improver that could shake things up a bit whilst the former made an encouraging return to action at Ascot. Of all of them though, Rathlin looks the best value at 20/1. Hidden Cyclone is 10/1 and Rathlin smashed him at Galway in July. He was 7th in the Supreme (Al Ferof's Supreme) 3 years ago and just loves quick ground. His Hidden Cyclone form would also put him ahead of Sam Waley-Cohen's mount on form lines from the Paddy Power and, with a bit of Mouse-magic, he can cause something of an upset. Cheltenham 14.40 - Rathlin 1pt e/w
Already advised: Cheltenham 14.40 - Al Ferof 1pt win 7/1
Already advised: Cheltenham 15.20 - More Of That 1pt win 7/1 Cheltenham 15.20 - Celestial Halo 1pt e/w 33/1
The Byrne Group Plate is a minefield but, miraculously, I only have a shortlist of 3. The first is Bless The Wings who was pulled up in this last year and is yet to realise full potential over fences. He has dropped to a really handy mark though and Alan King's runners are going well here. It's the first time blinkers that really grab the attention as he needs some sort of spark but he likes it here and this drop back in trip should suit at 25/1. Just being swerved is Highway Code who looks well treated on the basis of his beating of Massena but I'm not convinced he'll get the trip and that's a concern in a race like this. I backed Nadiya De La Vega in the Paddy Power but she ran a stinker and tailed off. She was a little better next time but not enough to suggest she can win this. I thought she travelled with more purpose over 3 miles at Kempton though before making a race ending mistake and she too is in first time headgear today. Hopefully the visor will just liven her up a little because she's off a handy mark and I like her on decent ground. Andrew Tinkler goes well with her and she's a nice price at 20/1. Uninspiring It has not been great for Paul Nicholls so far at Cheltenham. His runners have finished: 94065F7089U8472. We switch to the New course and Cheltenham and the former champion trainer will be hoping for better luck with Big Buck's and Silviniaco Conti. ======================================== Travel disruption The fog is causing some travel disruption around Cheltenham. If you are comiong from the Swindon direction to Cheltenham the A417 from the M4 is closed following an accident. It is expected to open at around 10 a.m. 1 hour ago. ========================================== View from the clerk "I wanted to do is restore the conditions we had on the track on Monday and Tuesday, which people were happy with. The groundstaff were at it until 2am and they've done a great job," clerk of the course Simon Claisse on the choice to water. ===============================================

Briar Hill will face a total of nineteen rivals in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on Friday. Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins with Briar Hill Willie Mullins' unbeaten gelding is likely to be one of the hottest favourites of the Festival on his first race under Rules over three miles, though he did win a race at Necarne during his brief involvement in point-to-point racing. David Pipe may have saddled a 33/1 winner at the meeting but Kings Palace will be somewhat shorter on Friday. The six-year-old is no stranger to winning at Cheltenham having landed the Bristol Novices' Hurdle in Decmber. He was behind Captain Cutter when the pair met in a bumper at Ascot and Tony McCoy's mount has gone on to give the form a huge boost with victory in the Challow Hurdle. Nicky Henderson's seven-year-old carries the colours of last year's winner, At Fisher's Cross. Deputy Dan is one of the most improved novices in training and would be a tremendous advert for the training skills of Oliver Sherwood having won the Leamington Hurdle at Warwick. Malcolm Jefferson went close with Attaglance earlier in the meeting and the North Yorkshire handler has cogent claims of providing an upset with Urban Hymn. A winner over the extended three miles at Doncaster, he had previously dotted up in his previous start over Fixed Brush Hurdles at Haydock by some 20 lengths. The other confirmations at the 24-hour stage were: Apache Jack, Blakemount, Champagne West, Cogry, Madness Light, Masters Hill, Mosspark, Port Melon, Prince Siegfried, Regal Diamond, Rydon Pynes, Saint Roque, Sausalito Sunrise, The Job Is Right and Very Wood.

A total of sixteen runners will head to post for the JCB Triumph Hurdle on Friday. Calipto: Warm favourite for JCB Triumph Hurdle Paul Nicholls is responsible for the likely favourite Calipto, and the former French-trained runner bids to win his third race on the spin for new connections. John Ferguson relies upon Musselburgh winner, Broughton as dual-purpose handler, John Quinn saddles two in the race with Pearl Castle and Rutherglen. Nicky Henderson gives another chance to Royal Irish Hussar following his disappointing run at Doncaster in December and he has been declared along with one-time ante-post favourite for the race, Kentucky Hyden. Ireland have a predictably strong hand and Guitar Pete aims to follow in the hoofprints of last year's winner, Our Conor, for Dessie Hughes. Tiger Roll, who finished behind him at Leopardstown, will attempt to reverse form along with Plinth, who was third in the contest. Plinth will again be ridden by AP McCoy and will aim to roll back the years for Aidan O'Brien. The former Flat performer carries the colours of JP McManus and undoubtedly evokes memories of the stable's brilliant Champion Hurdler, Istabraq. Willie Mullins has two shots at the prize with Abbyssial and Adriana Des Mottes. The former accounted for the latter at Fairyhouse in February although both have been largely friendless in the ante-post markets. Ballyglasheen, who won the Trial for this race at the course at odds of 66/1 also stands his ground for Evan Williams. The field is completed by Achtung, Amoruccio, Cherry Tiger and Lindenhurst.

Contenders from Ireland, France and North America feature among the 75 entries for this year's £425,000 Group One Investec Oaks (in memory of Sir Henry Cecil), the Classic highlight of Investec Ladies' Day at Epsom Downs, Friday, June 6. Tapestry: Heads the Oaks entries Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien has sent out the winner of the mile and a half Classic four times and the Ballydoyle handler is responsible for 11 contenders this year headed by Tapestry, who is 8/1 favourite with Coral, official betting partner of the Investec Derby Festival. The daughter of Galileo captured the Group Two Debutante Stakes at the Curragh in August before being promoted to second behind the Clive Brittain-trained Rizeena after meeting trouble in running in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the same course in September. O'Brien's entries also include Group Three scorer Wonderfully, Leopardstown maiden winner Bracelet, Adeste Fideles, a daughter of the 2001 Oaks winner Imagine, plus Dance With Another and Sparrow, whose dams both finished second in the Epsom Downs fillies' Classic. A total of 19 Irish-trained entries also include My Tatania, who won the Group Three C L Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh in September and represents the same owner/trainer combination of Christopher Tsui and John Oxx that enjoyed Investec Derby success with the filly's sire Sea The Stars in 2009. Michael Dickinson sent over Wolf Prince from the United States to finish eighth in the 1993 Investec Derby and there could be further American interest at Epsom Downs this year with the Kenny McPeek-trained Rosalind. The daughter of Broken Vow readily scored on her debut in a mile turf maiden Ellis Park in August before running some excellent races in Pattern company, including a fine second in the Grade One Alcibiades Stakes on the Polytrack of Keeneland and a close third on dirt in the Grade One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. She kept on to take third on her seasonal return in an allowance race on dirt at Gulfstream Park on February 27. McPeek reported: "We are seriously considering Rosalind for the Investec Oaks. She is out of a Theatrical mare, has won on the turf and is pretty versatile. "If she runs well on her next two starts, which are likely to be the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland and the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, then we will seriously look at coming to Epsom. "A mile and a half is not going to be an issue with her. She's a big filly and I think that she is going to grow into a better horse as a three-year-old. She knocked on the door against some of the best fillies in the nation last year. "The truth is that she probably should have won the Breeders' Cup but she went to her knees leaving the gate and only got beat half a length. I think that grass is probably her favourite surface but we pursued the dirt angle for the Breeders' Cup and nearly pulled it off. "I was a little disappointed with her return at Gulfstream Park but I think that the pace of the race worked against her - there wasn't any speed early on and it turned into a bit of a sprint. She kicked home but wasn't able to catch them. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have looked for another race for her. "It would be pretty exciting to try and pull off the Kentucky Oaks and Investec Oaks double." France could also be represented in the Investec Oaks with nine entries including Al Ghyzal, who could be a first Epsom Classic runner for Al Shaqab Racing, debut winners Shamkala and Sinnamary, plus Zarshana, who is a Sea The Stars half-sister to a brilliant Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, Zarkava. Ihtimal, from the stable of Saeed bin Suroor, has already posted a pair Classic wins in Dubai this year and the five Godolphin entries also feature the Charlie Appleby-trained Folk Melody, a daughter of Group One scorer Folk Opera, who made an impressive winning debut at Newmarket. Ralph Beckett saddled a memorable one-two in last year's race and the trainer may be represented this season by Doncaster maiden winner Regardez, who is out of a half-sister to his 2008 Investec Oaks heroine Look Here. Andrew Balding sent out Casual Look to glory in the Investec Oaks in 2003 and the trainer has entered her daughter Casual Smile. The Sea The Stars filly went down by a neck to the John Gosden-trained Taghrooda on her latest start at Newmarket in September. Six entries from Sir Michael Stoute include Sea The Bloom, a daughter of Group One winner Red Bloom, and a pair of fillies owned by The Queen - Shama and Queen's Prize. Other notable entries include the Charlie Hills-trained Cambridge and Amazing Maria, who was the decisive winner of a Group Three contest at Goodwood for Ed Dunlop in August.

Hexham, 13 March 2014
2.20, second race
The Stewards noted that ROYAL SAM (IRE), placed third, ridden by Wilson Renwick, had failed to enter the unsaddling enclosure. Being satisfied that the rider had been following advice from the Veterinary Officer not to do so, they took no further action.
2.55, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of KINGS FOLLY (IRE), ridden by Peter Buchanan and trained by Lucinda Russell, which was ridden in mid field and stayed on from the second last to finish fourth, beaten approximately 22 lengths. They interviewed the rider, received a report from the Veterinary Officer and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated his instructions were to drop the gelding in, get him settled and jumping then ride a race. He added that KINGS FOLLY (IRE) was very keen in the first mile, before becoming tired after the fourth last hurdle. Then the gelding, having got his second wind running down the hill, stayed on past tired horses. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted his explanation.
4.55, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference after the last fence. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that FILBERT FOX (IRE), placed second, ridden by Peter Buchanan, had interfered with the winner, SAMSON COLLONGES (FR), ridden by Tony Kelly. The Stewards found Buchanan in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift right handed thereby causing interference. The Stewards also considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, DYNASTE (FR), ridden by Tom Scudamore, and trained by David Pipe, compared with its previous run at Kempton Park on 26 December 2013, where the gelding finished 5th of 9 runners, beaten 46 ¾ lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that DYNASTE (FR) may have pulled a muscle in the Kempton Park race. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
4.00, fifth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BALLYNAGOUR, ridden by Tom Scudamore, and trained by David Pipe, compared with its previous run at Cheltenham on 16 November 2013, where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the trainer’s explanation that BALLYNAGOUR appeared suited by the first time tongue strap and had been working well at home. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.

ROBIN GOODFELLOW SELECTIONS... A Cheltenham
130 Calipto
205 Anay Turge (nb)
240 KINGS PALACE (nap)
320 Bobs Worth
400 Pearlysteps
440 Caid Du Berlais
515 Claret Cloak
======================================= 13:30 Friday 14th March Racing Tips - 14/03/2014
I really like Calipto for the Triumph but do think he's short given what he has beaten and the different ground he will encounter this afternoon. Add to that a few Nicholls runners looking a little flat and you'd be concerned unless on antepost at a bigger price. The Irish are headed by Guitar Pete but I'm not sure about the strength of his form and wouldn't be too keen to back at single figures. I think Tiger Roll could well claim revenge. So too may Adriana Des Mottes on stable companion Abbyssial and she's the one I like at a bigger price. However, there's a real stand out at the prices if we are willing to forgive a run. Royal Irish Hussar was favourite for this before flopping at Doncaster. He beat Fox Norton at Market Rasen and then went down to that same runner by 16 lengths last time out so we have to say that he was not himself. He holds Guitar Pete on form, has his ground and has won here so 10/1 looks generous and connections are due an upturn in fortune after the disappointment of Captain Conan. Cheltenham 13.30 - Royal Irish Hussar 1pt e/w
The County Hurdle has two very likeable Irish 5 year olds at the top of the market and, of them, Arctic Fire is the pick just ahead of Minella For You. There again, the latter is a better price and I expect them to be fighting it out at the finish. In fact, all of the McManus runners are of interest, so too both the Philip Hobbs charges. I already have a classy former Cheltenham novice on side here in the form of Montbazon but another couple have a chance today, namely Alaivan and Dunraven Storm. The former is the one that really pings out at the weights though and has 2 good efforts behind him coming into this. His first 2 starts for the yard came when they were out of form but his run in the Betfair Hurdle was very encouraging and a proper test back at a track he loves could see him fair better. He is a massive 12lb lower than when a 2 and a half length 6th in this 3 years ago in similar ground so he's a solid option at 16/1. The other one I like at the early prices is outsider of the McManus team Thomas Edison given he has been unlucky on his last 2 starts and is still off what looks a handy mark. He should appreciate the ground and seemed to be handling the track last time, though it was probably too early to say. Mark Walsh is underrated and a first time hood will hopefully help him get is head in front, something he hansn' t done enough as yet given a likeable profile (he is the only horse to have beaten Champagne Fever in a bumper). He's 22/1 and that looks value given he was well supported and half that for the Greatwood back in November. Cheltenham 14.05 - Thomas Edison 1pt e/w Cheltenham 14.05 - Alaivan 1pt e/w Already advised: Cheltenham 14.05 - Montbazon 1pt e/w 33/1
The Albert Bartlett is the most interesting contest of the day in some respects and much depends on whether Briar Hill lives up to expectation. i won't go into it but if you back him at 13/8 you might make some money. Back 10 horses with that profile at that price over the course of a season an you'll be poor. Kings Palace has stronger form in the book but whether he will be allowed to make all here remains to be seen. I want to get stuck into the big prices about the likes of Blakemount and Champagne West. The former just gets preference as he should love the ground and looks a really game sort who won't shirk a battle. Ballyalton has done his form no harm and I think he will certainly reverse the form with Urban Hymn on this ground at 33/1. The other I can't resist having a nibble at is Port Melon for a yard needing a winner. He will be a shock winner and I really don't expect him to oblige but certainly think he can outrun his 40/1 price. He was sent off at 7/2 for a Grade 2 on debut and looked as though he would come on plenty for the run. He galloped all over them turning for home before tiring but I wouldn't put that down to stamina. He was beaten by Creepy and Kings Palace thrashed Creepy the previous month but this was a marked improvement from Martin Keighley's runner who settled better off a stronger pace. Port Melon is very much one for next season but he'll love the ground and may surprise a few. Cheltenham 14.40 - Blakemount 1pt e/w Cheltenham 14.40 - Port Melon 1pt e/w
It will not win a bravery award but the best play in the Gold Cup looks to be Last Instalment at 9/1. There was talk that he wouldn't run on the ground but don't let that fool you into thinking he will not handle it. I think he's a better horse on decent ground - the worry is whether or not his legs will take it as he has had problems. They've watered and the fact that it's still good to soft in places is encouraging. I think Bobs Worth will win and the presence of Cue Card had put me off the normally prominent Last Installment. However, with no Cue Card stringing them out I think it could suit his running style and I worry for the National-entered horses that will want an absolute stamina sapper. The Gold Cup isn't always a war of attrition, especially with good ground and in the absence of something winging them along. Triolo D'Alene's price has gone and he has to prove he likes it here after 2 poor efforts, whilst I'm not sure The Giant Bolster will get the stern test he really needs. First Lieutenant is interesting on his preferred surface but he still has something to find with the favourite and the selection. Last Instalment is 3 form 3 with Brian O'Connell on top and he showed last time that his novice potential is looking as though it can belatedly translate into Gold Cup quality. Cheltenham 15.20 - Last Instalment 1pt e/w Already advised: Cheltenham 15.20 - Rocky Creek 1pt e/w (non-runner)
I've had a bit on Caid Du Berlais antepost but, looking at the race now, there may be a few better treated runners. He's still a solid bet though and Jezki has done wonders for his form. I'm loyal to Royal Regatta at 14/1 who I've followed all season and who looked more put off by ground than track when disappointing here last time. He appears potentially very well handicapped off a mark of 133 if bouncing back for better ground. He beat Spirit Of Shankly who is rated 136 and Royal Regatta is a smarter prospect. He will probably get further in time but this looks right for now and Philip Hobbs is going well this week. For that reason it may be worth having a go at The Skyfarmer who seemingly has Hobbs' 1st choice apprentice on top and is a bigger price at 16/1. He has a different sort of profile to the first selection in that he has made his way through the handicap ranks, culminating in beng sent off at 5/1 for a smart Group 2 at Ascot last time. The ground stuffed him that day but he'll be more of a threat in this easier race on a sounder surface and eased 1lb for good measure. Lyvius has franked the form of his win on penultimate start and he is just preferred to Leo Luna at a similar price. Cheltenham 16.40 - Royal Regatta 1pt e/w Cheltenham 16.40 - The Skyfarmer 1pt e/w Already advised: Cheltenham 16.40 - Volnay De Thaix 1pt e/w NRNB (non-runner)
Noel Meade hasn't saddled a British winner for some time but I really like his chances this afternoon with Ned Buntline. He may prefer a bit of cut in the ground and may have to brush up on his jumping but he is so well handicapped that he has to be given a serious chance at 9/1 He wears a first time hood which could wake him up a bit and his form in amongst the likes of Ballycasey, Bright New Dawn and Mozoltov, all established Graded runners, gives him a massive chance off 138. Paul Carberry gets on very well with him and it's as close to a plot as I can find in the race. I wish I'd seen it sooner but the trainer seemed keen to distance the horse from Cheltenham talk after his December win. The other 2 that make appeal are Next Sensation and Claret Cloak. The former is just a point shorter than the latter and is used to dominating with Tom Scudamore on top. This afternoon he has a change of jockey and will have pressure for the lead so he is perhaps a bit short in the betting. Claret Cloak was outclassed in a smart Grade 1 at Sandown but, only 2 lengths behind JLT winner Taquin Du Seuil, you'd have to give him every chance in a handicap off 142. Previously he had just failed to give 5lb to Manyriverstocross (who ran respectably on day 1 here) on ground that may have been to soft for him and 8/1 could well shorten further. The yard are in good form this year and have just been a little short on luck this week Cheltenham 17.15 - Claret Cloak 1pt e/w Cheltenham 17.15 - Ned Buntline 1pt e/w ===============================================

A former jockey who turned to drug dealing after his dreams of racing were shattered because he grew too TALL has been jailed.
Michael Geran, 24, was delighted when he managed to fulfil his childhood dream of becoming a professional rider in his late teens.
He rode in around 300 races but was devastated when he was told he would have to pack in the sport because he had grown too tall.
Geran started scraping a living riding out for a local trainer in Newmarket, Suffolk but fell into debt.
Ipswich Crown Court heard how he turned to drugs in a bid to keep his weight down but then started dealing in a bid to pay off his massive overdraft.
He regularly travelled to and from Liverpool to bring cannabis and cocaine to Newmarket.
He was jailed for three years on Tuesday after admitting possession of cocaine with intent to supply and possession of cannabis.
Judge David Goodin said he had been “an important cog in the machinery of supply”.
He added: “This is a serious case of possession with intent to supply cocaine.”
Archie Mackay, mitigating, said Geran, who lived in Newmarket, appreciated he had made “a terrible mistake”.
Geran, also known as Michael Metcalfe, raced more than 300 times after becoming a professional jockey in 2006.
He won 28 races and competed regularly at Newmarket, Ascot and Epsom.
Geran raced for a string of trainers including Karl and Elaine Burke and former footballer-turned-trainer Mick Channon

Willie Mullins is pondering an appeal into the result of the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup in which his star stayer On His Own finished a close second. Connections of On His Own (centre) are considering an appeal The 16/1 shot was only beaten a short-head by another Irish challenger Lord Windermere, who drifted into the Mullins runner all the way up the run in and only held on by inches at the the line. There was a stewards' enquiry into the incident but they allowed the result to stand, with the Irish champion trainer revealing replacement jockey David Casey was disappointed with the outcome. Mullins said: "I thought he was interfered with and he was beaten a short head and was in front after the line. "The stewards felt he didn't deserve to get it and what more can I do at this stage David (Casey) was disappointed at the outcome of the inquiry." "I'll have a chat with the owners and see what they want to do. I'll have a chat with David and then speak to people who are more experienced than me on appeals in England." Mullins is now looking to the Punchestown Festival with the 10-year-old, who has fallen in his two attempts at the Grand National. "Four weeks ago he was just a handicapper going for the Grand National, then he ran a terrific race in the Bobbyjo and we said we'd go to Punchestown for the Gold Cup there, then I got home and thought why not go for the Gold Cup in England," Mullins added. "I had a look at the supplementary fee and talked to Graham and he said yes. Coming here this morning if I thought we'd get second I'd have been delighted. He'll go back to Punchestown."

Don't miss Andy Charles' runner-by-runner guide to Saturday's big betting heat - the Betfred Midlands Grand National. Malcolm Jefferson has an improving stayer on his hands ALFIE SPINNER Trainer: Nick Williams. Jockey: Brendan Powell Has dropped quite a way in the handicap over the last two years but that just means him running from wrong in the weights in this race. Dour stayer but you have to excuse him an awful run at Ffos Las last time out. Rating: 4/10 ALPHA VICTOR Trainer: Will Kinsey. Jockey: Peter Buchanan A real in-and-out character, who was on his best behaviour last time out when beating Jaunty Journey at Bangor. Should stay this trip well but has his quirks and has refused twice in his last six runs, both times looking mulish. Buyer beware. Rating: 3/10 ARE YA RIGHT CHIEF Trainer: Willie Mullins. Jockey: Ruby Walsh Seemed to improve for a real test of stamina at Punchestown last time out when staying on strongly late in the Grand National Trial. It is hard to ignore the Mullins-Walsh axis when they go for a big prize, the only fear being him running from five pounds wrong. Bear in mind Ruby Walsh rarely makes it down to 10 stone these days. Rating: 8/10 BRADLEY Trainer: Fergal O'Brien. Jockey: Conor Shoemark (5) Ended a frustrating run of form when winning the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown last time out, but while it was nice to see him looking more tractable this might be asking a little too much of him as he goes back up in class and trip. Rating: 5/10 EMPEROR'S CHOICE Trainer: Venetia Williams. Jockey: Aidan Coleman Coleman's choice of the Venetia Williams runners and another one from her yard that has been in great form in recent months. Will appreciate the trip but could be one of the runners inconvenienced by the recent improvement in weather as he goes so well on bottomless ground. Rating: 7/10 FILL THE POWER Trainer: Sue Smith. Jockey: Jonathan England (3) Bounced back to form for a first win in nearly two years last time out at Wetherby but was well beaten in this race last year off a slightly lower mark and yet to convince he wants a marathon trip on soft ground. Rating: 3/10 FIREBIRD FLYER Trainer: Evan Williams. Jockey: Conor Ring (7) Could well prove best of the long-shots who are running from out of the handicap. Looked in rude health at Ludlow last time, and while this is a massive ask and a big jump in class, his form seems to improve in the spring and he might just be cherry-ripe for this. Rating: 8/10 Check out the latest Midlands National odds! GOULANES Trainer: David Pipe. Jockey: Richard Johnson Highly thought of but has proved very disappointing this season and has been off since being pulled up in the Welsh National after Christmas. Like Junior, a fourth Midlands National win on the bounce for the Pipe yard would mean Uttoxeter splashing out on plenty of free tickets for racegoers. Rating: 6/10 HARRY TOPPER Trainer: Kim Bailey. Jockey Nick Scholfield Connections hoped to run the top-weight in the Gold Cup but the lack of rain at Cheltenham scuppered their chances. This is not a bad second option, with a first prize touching £60,000, and his presence puts a lot of rivals out of the handicap, but has the drying ground reached Staffordshire enough to harm his chances? Undoubtedly the class horse of the race and surely the only one retaining Grade 1 hopes for the future. Rating: 9/10. JUNIOR Trainer: David Pipe. Jockey: Conor O'Farrell Tricky character and backers will soon know their fate. Can spit out the dummy but is a guaranteed stayer and if on one of his going days, could be a contender for the frame. Rating: 3/10 LOCH BA Trainer: Mick Channon. Jockey: Mr Harry Bannister (7) Stays 'longer than the mother-in-law' but with that comes a lack of pace. Sure to be running on at the end but probably too late to make it into the frame under his amateur rider. Also well out of the handicap proper. Rating: 3/10 PETE THE FEAT Trainer: Charlie Longsdon. Jockey: Noel Fehily Looked to have returned to form in December with a win and a decent third but two runs since have seen him fail to complete. Some 16 pounds higher than when his run of five wins came to an end at the end of 2012 and could be tough for him off this mark. Rating: 2/10 REBLIS Trainer: Gary Moore. Jockey: Joshua Moore *Doubtful Runner*. Winner of the Sussex National in January but this is a much tougher ask, especially from a career-high mark. But he is one of the runners coming into the race in form and his stable has been firing in the winners as well. Rating: 5/10 RED ROCCO Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies. Jockey: Mr Jamie Bargary (7) Doesn't convince as really wanting these extreme trips despite a sound second at Haydock on his seasonal return at Haydock over nearly four miles. Runs since have been poor and was very tired when falling last time out. Rating: 2/10 SUMMERY JUSTICE Trainer: Venetia Williams. Jockey: Liam Treadwell If it's Saturday and there is a big race, you have to take Williams runners seriously. Although apparently the stable second string, this one is running into form, will appreciate the trip and could well swoop late for a place under a Grand National-winning rider. Rating: 7/10 SUN CLOUD Trainer: Malcolm Jefferson. Jockey: Brian Hughes Has improved for every step up in trip and hard to say what kind of race he would have given Wyck Hill in the Eider but he was still travelling very nicely when falling at the 15th fence. Two wins before that full of promise and is perfectly placed in the handicap, not inconvenienced by running out of the weights. Rating: 10/10 WEST END ROCKER Trainer: Alan King. Jockey: Wayne Hutchinson Formerly very useful staying chaser who is back to a winning mark but this is his first run in more than a year and tough task from out of the handicap at the age of 12 off such a break. Rating: 3/10 WYCK HILL Trainer: David Bridgwater. Jockey: Mark Walsh Bounced right back to form when winning the Eider Chase three weeks ago, making light of a late mistake to beat Smoking Aces. Back up in the weights because of that, to a mark he struggled with before, and that might just stop him. Rating: 7/10 VERDICT: A fiendishly tricky puzzle to solve with so many runners running from out of the handicap thanks to the presence of top-weight Harry Topper. Kim Bailey's runner provides the definite class angle, and will surely run a big race, but giving two stone to the improving Sun Cloud could prove just too big an ask on ground sure to be getting a little quicker the more the sun shines. Firebird Flyer looks to be the best of the outsiders. 1. SUN CLOUD 2. Harry Topper 3. Firebird Flyer 4. Are Ya Right Chief

Cheltenham, 14 March 2014
1.30, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Sampling Officer that C.D. Timmons had provided a breath sample which was found to contain alcohol in a concentration above the threshold level for breath samples. They interviewed the rider and the Sampling Officer. Having heard their evidence the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)65 and referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority. Under Rule (D)66 the Stewards suspended Timmons from riding for the rest of the day.
2.05, second race
The Stewards noted that ARCTIC FIRE (GER), placed second, had interfered with DIAKALI (FR), placed fourth, who in turn interfered with BARIZAN (IRE), unplaced, who in turn interfered with the winner, LAC FONTANA (FR), approaching the final flight, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved ARCTIC FIRE (GER)’s placing.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by Robert Thornton, the rider of MONTBAZON (FR), placed third, from the second last flight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Thornton for 4 days as follows: Friday 28, Sunday 29, Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 March 2014.
2.40, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of PORT MELON (IRE), ridden by Daryl Jacob, on the way to the start. They interviewed two of the ground staff, who were standing close to the incident but were unable to interview Jacob owing to his injuries. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the gelding ducking left handed causing it to crash through the rail and fall.
3.20, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, LORD WINDERMERE (IRE), ridden by Davy Russell, had interfered with ON HIS OWN (IRE), placed second, ridden by D.J. Casey, who in turn interfered with THE GIANT BOLSTER, placed third, ridden by Tom Scudamore, and that the interference had not improved LORD WINDERMERE (IRE)’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The Stewards found Russell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his horse to drift right handed into the whip. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Friday 28 March 2014.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by David Casey, the rider of ON HIS OWN (IRE), placed second, from approaching the second last. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Casey for 7 days as follows: Friday 28, Saturday 29, Sunday 30 and Monday 31 March, and Tuesday 1, Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 April 2014. Under Rule (B)54 the Stewards also fined the rider £1300.
They further enquired into the use of the whip by Noel Fehily, the rider of SILVIANACO CONTI (FR), placed fourth, from approaching the second last. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Fehily for 2 days as follows:- Friday 28 and Saturday 29 March 2014.
They also considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, LORD WINDERMERE (IRE) compared with its previous run at Leopardstown on 9 February 2014 where the gelding finished 6th of 7 runners, beaten 26 lengths.. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the stable had been out of form and LORD WINDERMERE (IRE) was unsuited by the slow pace at Leopardstown. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the false start in this race. They interviewed the starter and his assistant. Having hear their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they were satisfied that the false start was caused by HOUBLON DES OBEAUX (FR), ridden by Liam Treadwell, being forced to the right off the track despite the rider’s best efforts. On the second occasion when the riders approached the tape they recognized that the start tape was not fully fitted and pulled up. The Starter released the tape to prevent it being broken.
4.00, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mr P. McParlan, the rider of CARSONSTOWN BOY (IRE), placed second, from the second last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Mr McParlan for 4 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority.
4.40, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that Andrias Guerin, the rider of URBAIN DE SIVOLA (FR), had failed to obey his instructions. They interviewed the rider and the Starter. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the start the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)44.4 and suspended him for 1 day as follows: Friday 28 March 2014.
5.15, seventh race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SAVELLO (IRE), compared with its previous run at Fairyhouse on 19 January 2014, where the gelding finished 9th of 13 runners, beaten 55 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that SAVELLO (IRE) had made a bad mistake three out and was unable to recover in the soft ground. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
14/03/2014
Fakenham, 14 March 2014
4.55, sixth race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of ISDAAL, trained by Kevin Morgan had been altered. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)19.5 and fined him £80.
The Stewards noted that CHORAL BEE, unplaced, had interfered with EVER FORTUNE (USA), placed third, which in turn interfered with FOCAIL MAITH, placed second, on the bend leaving the back straight on the final circuit but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
14/03/2014
Lingfield Park, 14 March 2014
3.05, third race
The Stewards noted that there was interference between MAHADEE (IRE), placed third, and COPPERWOOD, unplaced, approximately one furlong out, but after viewing a recording of the race they were unable to apportion blame.
5.05, sixth race
The Stewards noted that GRENDISAR (IRE), placed second, had interfered with BLUE WAVE (IRE), unplaced, on the run to the line, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved GRENDISAR (IRE)’s placing.
14/03/2014
Wolverhampton, 14 March 2014
6.30, second race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of OLIVER’S GOLD, trained by Mark Walford, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £ 140.
7.00, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, ENQUIRING, ridden by Silvestre De Sousa and trained by Mark Johnston, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the colt had benefitted from a drop in class on his handicap debut, off a mark which in the trainer’s opinion, entitled the colt to win. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of ENQUIRING could be reviewed.
9.00, seventh race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, OVERRIDER, ridden by George Baker and trained by Alistair Lidderdale, compared with its previous run at Lingfield on 30 December 2013 where the gelding finished ninth of ten, beaten 15 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding benefitted from the drop in class and being able to dominate the race. They ordered OVERRIDER to be routine tested.

============================================ 14:55 Saturday 15th March Racing Tips - 15/03/2014
The first things to consider about the Silver Plate Hurdle are drying ground and 4 Pipe runners. Good ground horses have come to the fore this week but with the David Pipe army in the race you need to be on something that will stay and form over 3 miles is a big plus coming into this. I think Carole's Destrier is a fair bit better than he showed last time and is a danger at a price. The one to take out of that Fingal Bay race though is Imperial Leader at 7/1 who may just come on for a slight drop in trip and better ground. He can surely win in this class off 128 if getting his jumping together but his price isn't all that appealing. I'll take Portway Flyer who will relish drying ground and who was a 12 length 2nd to Supreme 3rd Vaniteux last time, which makes a mark of 129 look lenient. He's 30lb higher than when making his handicap debut but has been winning with ease and shaped as though he will get the trip (he's not one with 3 mile form!). Gavin Sheehan is 2 form 2 on him and, with the yard in great nick, 14/1 is well worth taking. Drum Valley is the other I want to put up in the hope that the ground does really dry out. He is 22/1 and will face some less exposed rivals but that looks a huge price given how progressive he was on good ground last year. He found 3 miles 1 on good to soft too much of a test last time and wasn't disgraced behind Saphir De Rheu and Cheltenham winner Whisper the time before. He has a bit to find with Home Run on that effort but is better off at the weighs and will prefer conditions this afternoon. He'll want every bit of this trip so a stern test will suit and the yard are really hitting form of late. Kempton 14.55 - Portway Flyer 1pt e/w Kempton 14.55 - Drum Valley 1pt e/w
It's hard not to be sweet on The Romford Pele's chances this afternoon and a solid pace, which looks likely, will play to his strengths. He was no match for the likes of Oscar Whisky and Taquin Du Seuil when they went a crawl at Cheltenham in November but his 2nd to Balder Success at Chepstow, in a record time, was very encouraging and he looked back on song last time when staying on over 3 miles at Ludlow. The yard are going great guns now but there is another that just makes that little more appeal at the prices. Top Of The Range is held in high regard by his trainer if quotes after his Ascot win are anything to go by. He then unseated next time before running flat at Doncaster. That was his first try at 3 miles though and it came in a smart race won by Holywell who won off 145 on Tuesday. Top Of The Range took a keen hold in that small field but he'll have plenty more pace to aim at today and a drop in trip is no concern. He won off this mark over hurdles and, bred to be a chaser, he looks decent value at 8/1. Kempton 15.30 - Top Of The Range 1pt e/w
If Harry Topper is going to win the Midlands National then he's going to have to outperform the great Synchronised who carried half a stone less. Its not impossible but too big an ask to back with any confidence and he is without Jason Maguire, who he gets on so well with. His presence does skew the weights a little and means some are well out of them whilst others nip in with very little on their backs. Wyck Hill carrying 10-6 will be a threat but I like the chances of Sun Cloud who was travelling really well in the Wyck Hill race before coming down. Hopefully that hasn't harmed his confidence because he is progressive on softish ground over staying trips and I think he should be vying for favouritism. He is in at the weights and has just 10 stone on his back. The yard were unlucky last week and he can be backed at 8/1. At a bigger price and very much out of the weights is Loch Ba. He has a claimer on that has gone well on him before and hopefully the addition of a visor will help brush up his jumping. He is technically running off a mark of 135 and the good news is he was competitive off that mark at the start of the season. His Bangor run, when sandwiched between Midnight Appeal and Welsh National winner Mountainous, has worked out very well form wise and he looks to be crying out for a National trip. The yard are in need of a winner but the horses are running well and 20/1 is probably a little big. Uttoxeter 15.50 - Loch Ba 1pt e/w Uttoxeter 15.50 - Sun Cloud 1pt e/w ================================================

NOTEBOOK.
The Nick Gifford-trained COVE outperformed her 25/1 starting price, when she finished sec- ond in the 2m 5f NH novices' hurdle at Plump- ton's meeting last Monday. The seven-year-old Westerner mare was second in a 3m Point-to- Point in Ireland last year, but was beaten a long way on her British debut behind Toubeera two months ago. Her latest performance was very much a step in the right direction. On what was her hurdling debut, she ran on very well from the rear, although the odds-on winner was heavily eased, flattering Cove by only beating her by four lengths. Nonetheless, Cove looks one to watch out for over further in the future, maybe in handicaps over hurdles, before going chasing further down the line. Similarly, in the same race, 33/1 outsider BALLYHEIGUE BAY ran well on his first start for trainer Chris Gordon, finishing third. He had winning and placed form in Point-to-Points this year and last, and he set the pace up front until the winner easily overhauled him. He looks an- other who will jump a fence one day, but looks capable of picking up a handicap hurdle over distances exceeding 2m 5f. The Anthony Honeyball-trained CHILL FACTOR was well-supported in the betting for his handicap debut in the 3m ½f handicap hurdle at Taunton earlier this week. Once a winner and placed twice in bumpers last sea- son, he showed only a degree of promise in his first three starts over hurdles in November. Fitted with tongue-tie for this return to action, which was his first start over further than 2m 4f, he showed a whole lot more and was bang in contention at the last. It could be that he needed this run a touch, and will be a little sharper next time. Either way, he looks one to watch out for in low-grade staying handicap hurdles this spring. In the same race, another who showed more on his handicap debut was the Tim Vaughan- trained NASH POINT , who looks to have taken some time to get the hang of things, but was running in a Class 5 race for the first time and actually finished the best of those to come from the rear. By the Derby winner Kris Kin and out of an Accordion mare, Nash Point is stoutly-bred, so obviously needs a trip, and it's surely no coincidence that his improved show- ing was achieved on his first run over 3m. He could pick up a modest 3m handicap hurdle somewhere along the line. At Stratford, KING MURO showed some prom- ise in the juvenile hurdle. A winner of a 1m 3f maiden on the Flat when with his former trainer Andrew Balding, King Muro is now in the hands of Fergal O'Brien, and came to Stratford after a five-month break. As a horse with some Flat stamina running around a sharp course over 2m over hurdles, it was no surprise to see him make the pace, although his early keenness did appear to cost him some finishing zest. That said, he jumped nicely enough for one of his experience and wasn't disgraced in finishing fourth and pro- viding he settles better, he could be one to watch out for in similar races this spring. ==================================================
STAT WATCH. Although none of the stats-influenced selections prevailed in their respective races last week, each-way or place back- ers would have been rewarded by the third-placed finish of David Pipe's (12/1) Doctor Harper in the Grade 3 novices' hurdle at Sandown. We hope that the stats can point us the way of some winners this Saturday, with the Channel 4-televised action split be- tween Kempton (2.20, 2.55 and 3.30) and Uttoxeter (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.50). The David Pipe team have been among the winners again this week (to Monday, 10 March), but the most prolific Jumps trainer was Venetia Williams, who saddled 6 winners and chalked up a strike rate of 26%, bettered only in the UK by the 33% of Charlie Longsdon. The leading Jump jockeys of the week were jointly (by wins) Richard Johnson and Noel Fehily (4 wins apiece), with the lat- ter's superior 33% strike rate giving him the bragging rights. The 2m novices' handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter (2.05) could be a competitive little race, and Tim Vaughan's team have been in good form of late (30% winners last 14 days), and Yes Daddy could go well. Fellow Wales-based trainer Rebecca Curtis has also been enjoying a purple patch lately, saddling 40% of her runners to winning effect in the past 14 days, and has a great 31% strike rate at Uttoxeter in the past five seasons. Tara Road could go well in this company, dropped back to 2m for the first time since going hurdling. The Midlands Grand National is Uttox- eter's (3.50) feature race of the day and trainer Kim Bailey is one of the most suc- cessful trainers at the Staffordshire course in the past five seasons (fourth by wins) with an entrant in the race. His pos- sible runner is the smart chaser Harry Topper, who needs a real test of stamina, through testing ground and/or a long dis- tance, and could swerve the Cheltenham Gold Cup for this race. Top weights don't have a great record in this race, but Harry Topper has plenty of class and his pres- ence could force a few otherwise fancied contenders to run from out of the handi- cap. Another interesting possible runner is trainer David Bridgwater's Wyck Hill, one of the few entrants in this race with previous winning form over 4m, having won the Eider Chase last time and he may still be ahead of the handicapper. At Kempton, the Silver Bowl Chase (3.30) could be a fair opening for trainer Alan King's (third by wins at the course since 2009) Raya Star, who has winning form on the expected good-soft ground and wasn't beaten that far when third in a Grade 2 last time. He shouldn't be incon- venienced by the step up in trip either. ======================================
Race Ratings Saturday, 15 March - 2:20 Kempton Novices ́ Limited Handicap Chase (Class 3) (5yo+) 2m
7-2324 Able Deputy 123 7 Kim Bailey Some glimmers of promise over fences, but jump- ing hasn't been flawless and still remains a maiden after 14 runs under Rules. Does go well fresh, but others preferred. RATING 92 511U21 Arkaim 8 6 Pam Sly Has improved all season since landing a novices' handicap chase on his debut over fences at Tow- cester in November. Will carry a penalty for his wide-margin win at Leicester last week, but is sure to go up the handicap and could go well in this company. RATING 99 2UP4-4 Cayman Islands 30 6 John Ferguson Rated 127 over hurdles last season, Cayman Islands showed plenty of potential last time, on his chasing debut, when a two-length fourth in a Kelso novices' handicap chase. Probably faces a bit more opposition here, but could step up. RATING 95 8-417 Doynosaur 76 7 K R Burke One win from three starts over fences in last two seasons, in between disappointing on his chasing debut and last time, when never really a factor at Doncaster. Has something to prove, although sta- ble has fair form with its few Jumpers. RATING 94 334124 Easily Pleased 17 8 Martin Hill Interesting on better ground here, based on three- length second at Newton Abbot on penultimate start, off a 4lb higher official rating. Looked held on heavy ground at Wincanton last time, on first run in nearly four months. Could be more to come and each-way squeak here on best form. RATING 95 60524U Kingcora 20 6 Venetia Williams Was travelling well last time, when unseating as the race was hotting up. That probably would have been his best run to date for current trainer, having seemingly fallen down the handicap since switch- ing from France in the summer of 2012. Well-hand- icapped according his best French hurdling form, so no surprise to see him go well for a stable that has been in flying form recently. RATING 98 1165-7 Kitegen 154 8 Robin Dickin Son of Milan who won twice over hurdles in 2012, on the good, good to soft ground expected today. That sort of form gives him a shout here, assuming his ability over hurdles translates to fences on his chasing debut, and his first run in five months. Maybe one to watch out for the future, with this run under his belt. RATING 94 F10443 Noche De Reyes 56 5 Tom George Finished behind the subsequent dual winner Sound Investment last time out, on what was prob- ably a decent run on unsuitable heavy ground. Still open to improvement and could go well. RATING 98 51-P2 Oscatara 15 7 Donald McCain An improving, lightly-raced horse, who showed some ability last time on his chasing debut. Suspi- cion is that better ground and drop back in trip will help his cause and stable has been going well. Could go well at a price. RATING 97 6P-P8 Tante Sissi 98 7 Alan King Won the Listed mares' hurdle Final at Newbury the season before last, but form seems to have come off the rails since those heady days, and, although unexposed over fences, doesn't look an obvious winner, despite past glory. RATING 96 444855 Ted Dolly 36 10 Tom Symonds Looked in need of the run and probably wasn't that suited by the heavy ground on stable and British debut last time, over course and distance. Could leave that run behind, but probably more exposed than most. RATING 93 151-53 Veloce 53 6 Donald McCain Fair novice hurdler last season, and fared well on chasing debut last time on unsuitably testing ground. Has claims on pick of hurdling form, may find one or two too good in this company. RATING 9 UP-1P3 Thanks For Coming 228 8 Nicky Henderson Stable has been in red-hot form in past fort- night, and fair novice form of last and current seasons give him a major chance, even allow- ing for the fact that this will be his first run since last summer. Drop back in trip should help. RATING 100 ==========================================
RACING NEWS. Australian racing was left in mourning after the passing of jockey Roy Higgins last weekend, at the age of 75. Higgins was the record-equalling 11-time winner of the Melbourne Jockeys' Championship, and completed the 'grand slam' for Australian jockeys, winning the Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plate, the Caulfield Cup and the Golden Slipper. Higgins rode Bart Cummings' first Melbourne Cup winner in 1965, one of a total of 108 Group 1 winners among more than 2,300 career winners. A public funeral service will be held at Flemington racecourse on Thurs- day, 13 March. US racing star Top Billing will miss out on this season's prestigious Triple Crown after he was discovered to have cracked his off-fore cannon bone during a workout last Saturday. The son of Curlin is trained by Shug McGaughey, and was a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby. Formerly trained in Britain, Fiorente won the Group 1 Australian Cup last weekend, promoting his trainer Gai Waterhouse to consider a possible tilt at Royal Ascot this summer. In the meantime, connections are expected to aim Fiorente at Australian racing's richest race, the £2.2m Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Jockey Danny Mullins more than ably deputised for the injured Paul Carberry when he rode Gallant Oscar to win the Leinster National at Naas racecourse last Sunday. Trainer Tony Martin expects the eight-year-old Gallant Oscar to maintain his upward curve in three-mile staying chases on deep ground. Trainer Willie Mullins ruled out Un De Sceaux of an appearance in the Champion Hurdle, saying that he would give him a little more time before looking at end-of- season targets. Tony McCoy was released from his ride aboard the Rebecca Curtis-trained Teaforthree in this week's Cheltenham Gold Cup to instead partner the Nicky Henderson-trained Triolo D'Alene, whose price had dropped as short as 10/1 the Monday before the race, having been 25/1 a week earlier. The Philip Hobbs- trained Captain Chris was ruled out of the race after a scan reportedly revealed a problem with a suspensory ligament. In Dubai, top French jockey Christophe Soumillon extended the unbeaten record of the South African-trained Vercingetorix to six wins from six starts, in the Group 1 Jebel Hatta Stakes. Vercingetorix is trained by Mike De Kock. The much-missed Ballydoyle star St Nicholas Abbey is to be commemorated at Epsom Downs this year, the scene of some of the high- lights in his glittering career. The Coronation Cup will be named in his honour at this year's two-day Derby meeting, a fitting tribute to St Nicholas Abbey who was the most successful horse in the race's history, winning it three times between 2011 and 2013. This season's Betfair Chase winner Cue Card will miss the rest of the campaign after being diagnosed with a minor stress fracture of the pelvis. Colin Tizzard, trainer of the multiple Grade 1-winning chaser, re- ported that the early suspicions were that Cue Card had pulled some ligaments, but a scan revealed the fracture, ending any hopes of Cue Card running again this sea- son. Tizzard said that the injury wasn't se- rious and hoped that Cue Card would recover in time to run again in the autumn. ==============================================

It's a quiet weekend for Paul following four frenetic days at the Cheltenham Festival with just two runners out. Here is his verdict on Empire Levant and Bar A Mine who run at Kempton and Ffos Las respectively...
Saturday 14:55, Kempton Empire Levant Has run well in a couple of jumpers' bumpers here and at and Lingfield recently, and will like the drying ground. Would have badly needed the run on his reappearance - he suffered a bad injury in his box in the summer - and obviously had little chance against Annie Power and Zarkandar at Cheltenham next time. He has his stamina to prove, but conditions should suit and he is on a decent mark.
Sunday 14:15, Ffos Las Bar A Mine Clearly didn't handle the very testing conditions on his hurdling debut here last time, and had earlier shown a lot more promise in a couple of Chepstow bumpers. Is very much a horse for the future, but hopefully he will show a much improved form here.

Tony McCoy could take a short break from the saddle after giving up his rides at Kempton on Saturday. McCoy: Looks set to take break after missing Kempton rudes The champion jockey rode through the pain barrier at Cheltenham after being brought down on Goodwood Mirage on the opening day in the Fred Winter. McCoy stated after winning the JLT Novices' Chase on Taquin Du Seuil the following day that he very nearly never took the mount as he was in so much pain. A closing race fall on Friday in the Grand Annual from Mr Mole did not help matters. Jonjo O'Neill, who provides the majority of McCoy's rides, said: "He's just battered and bruised. He wants to take a couple of weeks off, that's what he should do, not a couple of days."
