Big Buck's is now 9/4 favourite with Sky Bet for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle following the news reigning champion Solwhit will miss the race. Solwhit: Removed from the betting for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle Charles Byrnes' charge, who took the Cheltenham crown in the absence of the four-times winner last season, is expected to miss the whole of the current campaign following a setback and has been removed from the betting by all firms. Big Buck's is expected to make his return from a spell on the sidelines in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on January 25 and had won the previous four runnings of the Grade One feature. Annie Power is second favourite at 4/1 with the Leeds-based firm ahead of More Of That (6/1) and Boston Bob (9/1). The latter, a stablemate of Annie Power's, is set to stay over hurdles for the remainder of the season, rider Ruby Walsh telling Racing UK: "He was very impressive on New Year's Eve at Punchestown. He won as he liked there and Willie is leaning towards the hurdle route."

=========================================== 13:15 Friday 10th January Racing Tips - 10/01/2014
There's an Irish raider lining up tomorrow at Sedgefield who could just be well treated off a mark of 100. Ivanka is top-weight in an undeniably weak race and it looks the sort of contest to side with a handicap debutant. We know she'll handle the heavy ground but, on the face of it, has plenty to prove having been beaten a distance on 4 of 5 starts. That run last time when staying on over 2 miles at Sligo does give her hope though and looking at the form of her run on penultimate start, when 18 lengths (& staying on) behind the likeable Upsie, her mark may just be a little short of her potential over this new trip. She's 7/1 and that's a safer bet than the shorter favourite, who does at least bring winning form into the race. The other 2 worth noting are Bollin Julie and Caught By Witness but I'd like them bigger than they are in the market currently. Sedgefield 15.15 - Ivanka 1pt e/w
A far better race comes in the form of the staying hurdle and nap of the day has to be The Young Master who goes off in search of a completion hat trick (he fell on penultimate start) at 7/4. Mister Philson is a big danger and both yards are in fine form but I think the current favourite should be a little shorter. He relishes testing ground and has got better the further he has gone so a step up to this trip doesn't look as though it will inconvenience. He won so convincingly last time that a 7lb rise looks well within him. Mister Philson is off a lenient mark back hurdling but does not bring quite the same credentials with him as The Young Master. At a bigger price American Life could be the one to focus on but has plenty to find with the principals and 6/1 just isn't juicy enough. Sedgefield 14.45 - The Young Master 2pt win
Continuing a move from bottom to top of the card, the staying chase looks all about 2 horses, both bigger than they should be. Sue Smith is in flying form and Baltic Pathfinder, who has gone well for 3lb claimer Shane Byrne before, has a good record at the track. He has won on soft ground, though the only concern is how will he handle really testing conditions given he tends to do his winning on better. He drops in class and is well worth a punt. Getting the nod for his bigger price, however, is Lough Coi at 7/1 for a yard yet to really get going. This mud lover drops in class from last time and looks well treated off 4lb lower than his last success. That was back 12 months ago under James Banks but was also the last time he raced over this sort of trip on heavy ground and he can exploit this mark in what looks a moderate race. Sedgefield 13.15 - Lough Coi 1pt e/w ==============================================

STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends. Assuming the storms stay away from the race- courses weekend, we're set for an enjoyable Sat- urday afternoon's racing on Channel 4, with the broadcaster covering action from Kempton (1.35, 2.10, 2.40 and 3.15) and Warwick (1.55, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35.) With eight Jump races for the delectation of view- ers this afternoon, let's take a look at the general Jumps form of the past week (to Monday, 6 Janu- ary.) The form jockey has been Jason Maguire, who has ridden 7 winners and recorded a superb 35% strike rate, if not quite good enough to surpass the 57% of fellow Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania, who rode 4 winners from 7 runners in the same period. Richard Johnson also did well, with 6 winners and a 30% strike rate. Given the form of Maguire, who is first rider to trainer Donald McCain, it's hardly a revelation to find that McCain's runners have been in great form. The Cheshire trainer has sent out more win- ners than any other British Jumps trainer in the past week, and chalked up a leading 33% strike rate at the same time. Also, Venetia Williams' run- ners provided the Herefordshire trainer with an ex- cellent 28.5% strike rate, but trainer of the week is surely Sue Smith, whose 4 runners all returned home with the silverware, providing Smith with a perfect 100% strike rate. So on to the televised races, and those at Kemp- ton include a Listed chase over 2m 4½f, which could be a good opportunity for the top-class Cap- tain Chris to regain the winning thread, and he has a 50% strike rate (3 from 6) at Kempton in the past five seasons. A viable alternative may be Irish trainer Willie Mullins' Twinlight, who is 2 from 3 on the expected soft ground and the trainer is in great form, with a 30% winning strike rate in the past 14 days. Later on the same card, the Grade 3 Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle looks set to be a competitive race, and in-form trainer's championship con- tender Nicky Henderson (42% wins from runs in the past 14 days) has a number of entrants in this race, with the unexposed Royal Boy an interesting contender based on his third behind the talented Melodic Rendezvous in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hur- dle last season. He won his only start over dis- tance on soft ground last time, and while this will be a different sort of race, he can improve again. Another unexposed contender is Emma Lavelle's Junction Fourteen, who took a big hike in the weights after his win over course and distance on Boxing Day, but he also has winning form on the ground and Lavelle's runners have won 33% of their races in the past 14 days (2 from 6.) At Warwick, the Grade 2 Novices' Hurdle (3.00) looks a good each-way opportunity for Henry Daly's unbeaten Vice Et Vertu. Although there are few in the race who have loftier official ratings, Vice Et Vertu is unbeaten in 3 starts (100%) on the antic- ipated heavy ground. Alternatively, David Pipe's (26% strike rate at course in past five seasons) Red Sherlock is interesting, having won on the ground and over hurdles, while in-form Willie Mullins' Rathvinden also holds claims through his wide-margin hurdles debut win last time. Warwick's Classic Chase (3.35) is a Grade 3 hand- icap over 3m 5f. Trainer Martin Keighley looks to have a progressive type in the form of Merlin's Wish, who has winning form over distance and on the ground. While this race is a step-up in class, he may improve, whereas many of his rivals with proven form over these sorts of distances are in the twilights of their careers. Keighley also has a good general 21% strike rate in the past 14 days. In a similar mould, Royale Knight, trained by Dr Richard Newland, has been winning over these marathon trips of late, and while he is 9lb higher in the handicap than when he won at Kelso over 4m last time, his trainer has a brilliant 75% strike rate (3 from 4) in the last 14 days, and a 31% gen- eral strike rate at Warwick, in the longer term. =========================================== NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races. The maiden hurdle at Musselburgh's recent Friday meeting didn't look anything out of the ordinary, but there was a degree of promise in the run to third of the Donald McCain-trained KATACHENKO . From a family with some form in hurdles over dis- tances between 2m and 2m 4f, Katachenko is owned by Trevor Hemmings, so one would suspect that he will be jumping fences somewhere in the future, but in the interim, he looks one capable of making his mark in handicap hurdles. His form to date amounts to a Point- to-Point win in Ireland last September, followed by a fair fourth in a bumper, and two (including his latest start) similarly respectable if not outstanding efforts in novices' hurdles around Musselburgh's sharp 2m track. On both these starts, he has looked as though he has been outpaced over 2m, so it maybe that Katachenko will benefit for stepping up in trip in the future, and possibly for the switch to handicaps, for which he will qualify after his next start. The following day, Lingfield's All-Weather meeting de- fied the terrible rain that led to the abandonment of a few Jumps fixtures that same day. The first division of the 1m 2f maiden for three-year-olds didn't look that strong a race, but it was probably a sensible starting point for Newmarket trainer Tim Pitt's debutant DARK TSARINA . A daughter of Soviet Star, she is out of a Definite Article mare, and as you might expect from that pedigree, and from the way she ran in this first race, Dark Tsarina clearly has a bit of stamina, as she was doing all her best work at the end, and will surely get further than 1m 2f around the tight confines of Wolverhampton. Another factor is that she was pretty green, and she missed the break, and was playing catch-up for the first two furlongs of the race. Given that, her run was generally encouraging, and she should improve on this performance with experience. Connections of the Lucinda Russell-trained WAYNE MANOR would surely have had mixed emotions after his latest run in a 2m 6f handicap hurdle at Newcastle, a mixture of frustration and satisfaction. A 2m winner on the Flat for his former trainer Ralph Beckett, this five-year-old son of Cape Cross's form seemingly dropped away after he switched to the Scottish yard of Russell in the winter of 2012/13, and a possible breathing problem was mooted. However, after a three-month break, Wayne Manor returned to action for this latest start at Newcastle, if ignored in the bet- ting and was sent off at 40/1. The ground was heavy, so this combined with a step up to 2m 6f (the furthest Wayne Manor has been tried over to date) would surely have exposed any de- ficiencies in his breathing. As it was, his task was made even harder as he was hampered twice in the race, by fallers at the second and at the second-last, when going well on the latter occasion and was nearly brought to a standstill. In the circumstances, he did well to nearly get on terms, finishing third, beaten only three quarters of a length by the winner. On this evidence, Wayne Manor has at least a similar race in him, granted better luck. The opening race at Plumpton's Sunday meeting last weekend was a fairly modest novices' hurdle over 2m, and among those to show promise was the fourth-placed TORERO , of trainer Diana Grissell. The five-year-old son of Hernando was a winner on the Flat, over 2m, for his former trainer, Kevin Ryan. Since moving to Grissell last autumn, he has run with promise over hurdles, finishing third of fourteen run- ners on his second and penultimate start, beaten only just over two lengths by a much-improved win- ner, who had dropped in class. On that occasion, Torero was doing all his best work towards the end of the race, something which he re- peated on his latest start. Through the race, a couple of mistakes suggested that he was finding that every- thing was happening a little too quickly for him, and he will surely be suited by further and also maybe a switch to handicaps, for which he will now qualify. His best form to date, on the Flat and over hurdles, has been achieved on ground with some cut in it, if not bottomless. There should be a modest race or two for him over hurdles somewhere along the line. ========================================== RACING NEWS.
Irish jockey Bryan Cooper has taken over from Davy Russell as first rider for leading Jumps owner Gigginstown House Stud, owned by RyanAir chief Michael O'Leary. Cooper, 21, who has won eight Grade 1 races since 2012, started his new posi- tion on 6 January. It has been reported that Russell, who rode for the stud for the last seven years and has won the Irish jump jockey's championship for the past two seasons, was left shocked by the decision, but will ride for Gigginstown House Stud in the future. Trainer Paul Nicholls has revealed that Silviniaco Conti, winner of the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, will head straight to the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, while Al Ferof, who was third at Kempton, may run in Newbury's Denman Chase next month, with a view to running in the RyanAir Chase or the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. The racing world was saddened by the passing of Terry Biddlecombe earlier this week, who died aged 72 on Sunday. Biddlecombe, a former three-time champion Jump jockey, is survived by his wife, retired trainer Henrietta Knight, who he married in 1995. The couple achieved national fame through their handling of the three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Best Mate, who also won a King George, as did his stablemate, Edredon Bleu. Sir Des Champs, runner-up in last season's Cheltenham Gold Cup, will miss the rest of the season after the eight-year-old was diagnosed with a tendon injury. Owned by Gigginstown House Stud, the Willie Mullins-trained Sir Des Champs was generally third-favourite at 6/1 in the ante-post markets for the 2014 Gold Cup. Jockey Martin Dwyer reported that he was left feeling groggy after he fell from his first ride of the year at last Friday's meeting at Southwell. The force of the impact split the Derby-winning rider's helmet in two, and Dwyer was unconscious for six minutes. Dwyer later underwent a series of tests and scans at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, which were reported to be clear, bar a suspected broken collarbone. Dwyer is likely to be out of the saddle for three weeks and, before he can ride again, he will have a concussion test in consultation with the British Horseracing Authority's medical adviser, Dr Michael Turner. Former Champion Hurdler Rock On Ruby has been the subject of plenty of support in the ante-post markets for the Cheltenham Festival's Arkle Chase in the past week, with his odds being cut from 16/1 to 10/1. His trainer, Harry Fry, saddled his first Cheltenham winner, Mendip Express, at the racecourse's New Year meeting earlier this month. Fry is hoping to find some better ground for Rock On Ruby's next run, before upping him in class for a Grade 2 novices' chase at Doncaster at the end of this month. Newmarket trainer Roger Varian reports that his Classic fancy Kingston Hill may head straight to the 2,000 Guineas, or take in a Derby trial en route to the Epsom Classic itself. Varian said plans depend on how Kingston Hill, winner of last season's Group 1 Racing Post Trophy, does in his homework through March. Kingston Hill is currently 10/1 in the ante-post markets for the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby. ==============================================
Race Ratings Saturday, 11 January - 2.10 Kempton William Hill Chase (Listed) (Class 1) 2m 4f 110y.
The following horses were entered for this race but many may not run. The runner with the highest rating will be the selection of our team.
15 Sat 11 Jan - Fri 17 Jan 2014 SATURDAY 6 CLUB 0-P532 Any Currency 29 11 Martin Keighley A fine servant for the yard who has run well at some big meetings over the years, although his best per- formances have all been over further than 3m. Drop in trip is interesting, and he does handle soft ground, but form has been declining and has an apparent mountain to climb in this company. RATING 89 523-1R Bury Parade 23 8 Paul Nicholls A talented if potentially quirky performer who blotted his copybook last time when he refused to race. That race had been preceded by a winning seasonal debut at the expense of the well-regarded Hadrian's Approach, but other bits of form suggest he has a bit to prove and possibly not one to take on trust. RATING 93 51-72U Champion Court 16 9 Martin Keighley A slipping saddle may have cost Champion Court vic- tory when a ¾ length runner-up in the Peterborough Chase two runs ago, but he unseated at an early stage in the King George next time, so couldn't follow up that promising run. Any quickening of expected soft ground would help, and recent form suggests he could be thereabouts. RATING 98 285-22 French Opera 28 11 Nicky Henderson Has run well at this level over the years, if one who looks a little more comfortable in decent handicaps rather than conditions races. Form when eight-length second to Al Ferof, in a match in the Amlin 1965 Chase, reads quite well now, following that horse's subsequent performance in the King George. Could be placed at a fair price on best form, but probably wouldn't want ground any softer than good to soft - soft. RATING 95 336P-6 Ghizao 30 10 Paul Nicholls Drops in class for first time since winning a gradua- tion chase over course and distance in November 2012. Handles a variety of ground, but likely to come up short against best of these according to recent form in Grade 1 and 2 races. RATING 94 P7P-55 Kauto Stone 35 8 Paul Nicholls Younger half-brother to former stable star Kauto Star, and won Down Royal's Grade 1 Champion Chase over 3m last season. Subsequent form at that level has been nothing to write home about, though drop in class and step back up in trip after looking outpaced in the Tingle Creek last time may help his cause. RATING 96 161-2F Majala 15 8 Tom George Won a Grade 2 novices' chase at Warwick en route to a respectable if beaten sixth in the Arkle. Recent form offers some promise for place backers, based on his second at Chepstow, behind Sire De Grugy, who went on to land the Tingle Creek. More on Majala's plate here, and has to prove he is none the worse for his fall last time. RATING 95 23-741 Pepite Rose 15 7 Venetia Williams Won the Class 2 handicap chase at Wetherby last time in which Majala fell, but that came after Pepite Rose’s rating decreased by 6lb. As talented as this mare is, she may be overfaced in this company, even with her mares' allowance, although testing ground shouldn't be an issue. RATING 95 12-309 Prince De Beauchene 14 11 W P Mullins Former Grade 2 winner over 3m whose recent form seems to be on the wane, and, at 11 years, is one of the older horses in the race. Others preferred, even allowing for drop in class and respected connections. RATING 93 5F-574 Tataniano 15 10 Richard Rowe Former top-class novice-chaser who hasn't won since October 2011, and was switched from Paul Nicholls' yard to that of Richard Rowe early last year. Nothing in recent unplaced form to suggest he can play a major role in this race. RATING 91 241-11 Twinlight 34 7 W P Mullins In a period stretching back to the autumn of 2012, this improving chaser has won six of his last eight starts, including two Grade 2 races, on testing ground, all at around 2m distance. Step up in trip today is a question mark, but has been staying on, and further improve- ment cannot be ruled out. RATING 99 2264-3 Captain Chris 30 10 Philip Hobbs One of the mainstays of his trainer's yard and was narrowly denied by Long Run in the King George last season. Made a satisfactory come- back when third in the Peterborough Chase last time, when behind runner-up Champion Court, and looked as though he would come on for the run. The one to beat on paper. RATING 100 ===========================================

Junction Fourteen goes in search of hat-trick at Kempton on Saturday as he bids to continue his rapid progress in William Hill Lanzarote Hurdle. Saphir Du Rheu: Lanzarote hopeful Not disgraced when fifth in a Wincanton bumper in the spring, the Emma Lavelle-trained five-year-old was third on his hurdling debut at Exeter before edging out Cloud Creeper by a head in a Fontwell thriller in late November. He made a mockery of an initial handicap mark of 121 when scoring by 11 lengths over course and distance on Boxing Day and although the handicapper has bumped him up over a stone in the weights, Lavelle is hopeful of another bold show. She said: "He's just turned five, he's run a few times and comes back better and stronger each time, so under the circumstances it's right to have a crack at a decent handicap with him and see where we are. "He's done it there (at Kempton) already. OK it wasn't quite as good a race as this, but he did it very professionally. "He's gone up 16lb, this is a better race and he's carrying more weight. Well see, but hopefully he's improving." Nicky Henderson relies on River Maigue, a talented novice hurdler last term and an encouraging third on his seasonal bow at Sandown a month ago. The champion trainer's string have tended to improve significantly for their first runs this season and the master of Seven Barrows is hoping River Maigue follows the trend. Henderson said: "He ran well at Sandown and hopefully he's improved for that. "With that run under his belt, hopefully he'll run a good race." Henderson's great rival Paul Nicholls is represented by Saphir Du Rheu, who is rated 15lb higher than when bolting up at Sandown. His owner Andy Stewart said: "I won this race a few years ago with Nycteos, who carried 10st 10lb, and this is another horse who could be a top-class chaser. "He's got a lot of weight to carry but Harry Derham should take a useful few pounds off and the Lanzarote is the Lanzarote, so you've got to go for it." Nicholls' former assistant Dan Skelton has made a flying start to his training career, winning the valuable Ladbroke Hurdle at Ascot with Willow's Saviour. His assault on another major handicap prize comes through former Nicholls inmate Like Minded, who was second at Kempton in November before winning at Aintree the following month. Skelton said: "We've gone up 6lb so hopefully we can find 6lb from somewhere. "We'll go there hopeful that he'll run his race and be competitive, but it's impossible to say he's got a winning chance or anything like that. "I can't see why he wouldn't run his race, though." The Charlie Longsdon-trained Spirit Of Shankly won a strong novice hurdle at Haydock on his latest appearance, beating subsequent winner Urban Hymn. Longsdon said: "I always thought Spirit Of Shankly was nicely handicapped on 133 but I notice they put him up to 136 after his last run. "Running in a handicap could suit him and he'll have no problems with the ground." David Pipe's Home Run is among the market principals, but the Pond House handler is not all that confident about his chances. He said: "Life keeps getting harder and harder for Home Run as he keeps going up in the handicap but he keeps running well. "He'd have a small each-way chance, I'd suppose." Maller Tree turns out quickly after bolting up at Fakenham on New Year's Day. Trainer David Dennis said: "He has been put up 13lb for his win the other day, which dictates where we go now. "I really put him in the race in case it cut up, but it does look quite competitive. "It was soft at Fakenham and he has won on soft in Ireland so he should handle the ground." Foxcub has rocketed up the weights since his maiden victory at Southwell in May of last year, but trainer Tom Symonds is hopeful his six-year-old is still progressing. "He's up to 137 now, having started off winning handicaps off 91, and there aren't many other options for him," said the fledgling trainer. "He has only really run four times this season as he had a break in the summer and the only thing we won't know about is the ground, as he hasn't run on ground as soft before. "I think he's still improving, but we'll find out. "Although he's only small, he can be a chaser in time as he does jump fences well at home."

Newbury on February 8 appears the only realistic option for Mendip Express if he is to run again before the Cheltenham Festival. Mendip Express: Newbury an option before Cheltenham Harry Fry's eight-year-old continued his winning streak from his point-to-point days when landing what looked a competitive handicap at Cheltenham on New Year's Day in good style. While Fry believes his choices at the showpiece March meeting rest between the RSA Chase and the four-mile National Hunt Chase he will also enter him in the JLT Specialty Handicap, a race in which novices have a decent record. "If he runs again it will be at Newbury on Denman Chase day in a three-mile novice chase," said Fry. "We'll make our minds up nearer the time. As for Cheltenham he'll be entered in the RSA, the National Hunt Chase and he'll have an entry in the JLT Handicap although I suspect we'll stick to novice company. "I was really surprised with how well he handled the ground at Cheltenham last time, although it was wet enough for them to go through it. "Will Biddick knows him extremely well now, including points he's won his last nine races on him, and he's convinced he's much better on a decent surface."

Charlie Longsdon believes Killala Quay is a deserved leading fancy for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at Warwick on Saturday. Longsdon: Trains Killala Quay The seven-year-old has a few pounds in hand of his rivals on official ratings following his victory at Grade Two level at Sandown five weeks ago. He now bids to back that up in a similar grade in this race formerly known as the Leamington Novices' Hurdle. "He's a Grade Two winner, so hopefully he should go very well," said Longsdon. "He's the highest-rated horse in he race so he has to go for it. Everything's gone good since (his last run)." Creepy won a Grade Two at Cheltenham in November and was travelling well disputing second place when unseating his rider four out in the Grade One Challow Novices' Hurdle at Newbury won by Captain Cutter. Trainer Martin Keighley also declared Creepy for the rearranged williamhill.com Levy Board Tolworth Novices' Hurdle at Kempton, but confirmed the horse will go to Warwick. "He goes to Warwick. I think the trip will be perfect and he won't mind the ground. The Tolworth looks red-hot," said the Condicote handler. "He was unlucky at Newbury. He was still going very well. The one thing he would have done that day was keep galloping. They stopped in front. Let's hope he can make amends tomorrow. "If he runs to his best form, he'd have a good chance." Willie Mullins has no qualms about stepping Rathvinden up in company after winning his only start to date over hurdles. That came in a 24-runner event at Cork five weeks ago when he triumphed by 11 lengths. "Rathvinden has done everything very easily so far so he deserves a step up in grade," said Ireland's champion trainer. "We aren't taking him to Warwick just because it's soft ground, I don't think that is vital to him at all, he's going over simply because it looks the right race to run him in." Oliver Sherwood can see Deputy Dan going close on the strength of his 19-length romp at Chepstow two weeks ago. "He has come out of Chepstow in brilliant form and I am very much aware of capitalising when the ground is like this. He obviously loves it and other horses don't," said Sherwood. "I think he should be up to this sort of level. They put him 10lb for winning at Chepstow and he is now rated 132, so he is entitled to have a go at this instead of going for an ordinary novice race." Splash Of Ginge was put in his place when third to Irving at Ascot last month but had previously made all when trotting up at Aintree. His trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies hopes his consistent sort can put in another decent effort. "He's done nothing wrong all season and let's hope he can do it again," said the Naunton handler.

============================================= 15:35 Saturday 11th January Racing Tips - 11/01/2014
Dan Skelton can continue an excellent start to his training career with the likeable Toby Lerone at Kempton for the first of the handicaps today. He drops back in class after falling last time out and is only 4lb higher for his last win. I'd love to see Aegean Dawn win and he has a real chance but has to be a risky prospect on only his 2nd chase start. The 2 I like at the prices are Shangani and Sergeant Dick. The latter is a mud lover and is a nice price but there are question marks about the form of his win on penultimate start given he was a touch fortunate. Venetia Williams' runners are always of interest at this time of year and I'll be surprised if Shangani can't show his true colours for a drop in class. This season has been something of a let down but I think he will like the track here and heavy ground will certainly be a plus. The form of his Cheltenham 4th puts him right up there and it's a case of when rather than if at 13/2. Kempton 12.25 - Shangani 1pt e/w
The Liquidator is undoubtedly a beast and will be right up there in the betting for the supreme. I do think, however, there is sense in his trainer's comments / concerns about the Kempton track and he is worth taking on at his price. He is a heavy ground winner but that romp last time perhaps suggested he is best suited by a sound surface…or maybe I'm clutching at straws. Either way Upazo looks too short for what he has shown and the one to be on is Josses Hill for a yard with a good record in this. He has only been beaten in 3 starts by the well regarded Faugheen in a bumper on debut and has shown he handles soft ground with a classy, battling display last time at Newbury. I like his price, 11/2, and think the form of his maiden hurdle win is to be respected. Kempton 13.35 - Josses Hill 1pt e/w
I fancy Twinlight can cause an upset in the Queen Mother, with or without Sprinter Sacre, but can't fathom why he is lining up over 2 and a half miles at Kempton when he has shown his best trip to be the shortest. I'm not convinced he stays…but Mullins probably knows more than me. There are so many who may not like the ground and Captain Chris, who connections also seem to think prefers better, is the one to side with at a nearly too short 2/1. They key is that he acts so well around here and as long as he jumps the last well, which he so often doesn't, he will take some beating for a yard bang in form. I'm wary of Ghizao at a bigger price who is better than he has shown of late and has a chance at the weights. He just hasn't shown enough in recent runs to be overly confident about his chances. Kempton 14.10 - Captain Chris 3pt win
The Lanzrote Hurdle is a minefield of form horses that could skate this. I can't find anything at a huge price of interest and actually think a couple near the top of the betting look decent propositions. Emma Lavelle was unlucky last year with Captain Sunshine but Junction Fourteen could make up for it this time around. Saphir Du Rheu is a very likeable 5 year old who will go onto bigger and better things but there is an air of Ptit Zig about him, the Nicholls runner that was stung by something carrying less weight in the Ladbroke. The 2 worth having at the prices look to be Like Minded and If In Doubt. The former is not your obvious pick for this race as it tends to go to a youngster. However, Dan Skelton has worked wonders with him and his novice days suggest we still may not have seen the best of him. He loves it here and I fancy he can be competitive of 6lb more than his win last time at 14/1. Philip Hobbs has continued his good form into the new year and I'll also back If In Doubt, who has had excuses for previous defeats but is a heavy ground winner and fits the trends for this. Kempton 14.40 - Like Minded 1pt e/w
I followed Relax off a cliff last season and then duly backed Sir Du Bearn (2nd) when Relax won at Ffos Las last time out. So I'm not backing him today, even though I think he'll win. The trouble with him is that he's had a go in this sort of class and hasn't really looked up to it. Jump City is a soft ground performer who may have a lot to offer, while On Trend would win this if it was 18 months ago, but it isn't. In a race where plenty have something to prove, it could be worth siding with Good Order at 11/2 who goes off in search of a hat trick. He clearly enjoys being partnered with Alain Cawley and is still relatively lightly raced for a 9 year old. Up another 6lb and in class, this will be no stroll but the ground is a plus and he's pick of a modest looking bunch for the class. Kempton 15.15 - Good Order 1pt e/w
I was going to leave Warwick alone but Dunowen Point is a big price for his return to 2 miles this afternoon in conditions that will suit. He does stay further but a bit of company up top from Sew On Target will be no bad thing and he is now 3lb lower than when 2nd in the Topham last April. He looked like he needed the run at Aintree last time and the fact that he is still 3 from 7 over fences, and dropping in class, means he is worth supporting at 8/1. Sew On Target is due a win and the return to 2 miles could inspire just that though he is plenty short enough at around 4/1 given how rarely he wins. Likely favourite Dolatulo will take some beating and brings the most progressive profile into the race. He will relish conditions and a likely good gallop up top should bring his stamina into play given he stays an extra half mile. Warwick 13.55 - Dunowen Point 1pt e/w
It's worth tucking into a couple for the Betfred Classic Chase and don't be put off by a few golden oldies lining up in the mud. The problem for the 3 11 year olds at the top of the weights is that the highest weighted winner in recent years carried11-7. That shows just what Shotgun Paddy is up against as a first season chaser this afternoon under that very weight. I like the horse but think this is too big an ask.The last debut season chaser to win was Baron Windrush but he was carrying a lowly 10-3 and a similar prospect today is Boyfromnowhere under 10-5 with added help from Patrick Corbett's claim. He is proven at the trip and was ridden last time as though he would want every bit of the 3 and a half miles. A little extra today shouldn't inconvenience and he's my bet of the day at 8/1. Emperor's Choice was also in that race last time but looked as though he badly needed the run. He is potentially well treated now 6lb lower than his highest chase mark and is worth small support if he can regain some of last season's form at 12/1, especially if that Surrey National run is anything to go by. Victors Serenade is another of interest at a decent price but his stamina has to be questioned along with yard form and I'd want him into the 20's before playing. Kempton Park, 11 January 2014
11.55, first race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of FRUITY BUN, trained by Keiran Burke, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £140.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of THE GREEN OGRE, placed second, ridden by Tom Cannon and trained by Gary Moore, compared with its previous run at Newbury on 18 December 2013 where the gelding finished thirteenth of fourteen over 2 miles on soft ground, beaten by 43 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding saw too much daylight and did not jump fluently last time. They ordered THE GREEN OGRE to be routine tested.
12.25, second race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, KING EDMUND, ridden by Tom Cannon and trained by Chris Gordon, compared with its previous run at Ascot on 21 December 2013 over two miles one furlong on soft ground where the gelding finished eighth of ten, beaten by 54 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that KING EDMUND appeared better suited from a step up in trip and the application of a spoon bit. He added that the gelding had also settled better. They ordered KING EDMUND to be routine tested.

The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference after the last hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, GLENS MELODY (IRE), ridden by D J Casey, had interfered with MISCHIEVOUS MILLY (IRE), placed second, ridden by Leighton Aspell. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved GLEN MELODY (IRE)’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
12.45 second race
BOLD CUFFS, ridden by Joe Tizzard, was not dismounted in the appointed place. The Stewards noted the rider’s explanation that the gelding was lame and took no further action.

12.10, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference from the furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, OUTBACKER (IRE), ridden by Joe Fanning, had interfered with THREE D ALEXANDER (IRE), placed second, ridden by Martin Harley. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved OUTBACKER (IRE)’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
2.05, fourth race
The Stewards noted that the winner, EXAMINER (IRE), had interfered with JALINGO (IRE), placed second, approaching the furlong marker, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved EXAMINER (IRE)’s placing.

Wetherby, 11 January 2014
1.45, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry following an objection by Graham Watters, the rider of TRUST THOMAS, placed second, to the winner, ALLIED ANSWER, ridden by Wayne Hutchinson, on the grounds of causing interference approaching the last hurdle and on the run in. They found that ALLIED ANSWER had interfered with TRUST THOMAS, approaching the last but that the interference was accidental and had not improved ALLIED ANSWER’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
2.50, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference shortly after the second last hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, EMBSAY CRAG, ridden by Richie McGrath, had interfered with SHIMLA DAWN (IRE), placed second, ridden by Peter Buchanan and that the interference had not improved EMBSAY CRAG’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The Stewards found McGrath in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had allowed his horse to drift right causing interference. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.

STRATFORD RACECOURSE - Medical Failure
STRATFORD SECOND OCTOBER MEETING 2013
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on 9 January 2014 held an enquiry to consider whether or not Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse Co. Ltd., the Managing Executive of Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse, had committed breaches of Rule (F)15.2.3 of the Rules of Racing, in the light of BHA General Instruction 11.1 and 11.2, headed “Requirements for the Provision of Racecourse Medical Services” and “Responsibilities of Racecourse Medical Officers and Other Medical Staff”, in that at its medical inspection on 31 October 2013 the following deficiencies were identified:
• BHAGI 11.1 (para 6(b)) – the equipment and supplies in the Jockeys’ Medical Room (JMR) failed to include all the requisite items listed at Annex A to BHAGI 11.2; • BHAGI 11.1 (para 15(f)) – the inventory of equipment and supplies from which the Racecourse Medical Officers’ bags were to be checked was out-of-date and there was no inventory of equipment and supplies in the ambulance; and • BHAGI 11.1 (para 16) & 11.2 (para 3(g)) – the ambulance crews on duty were not handed copies of the racecourse’s medical ‘Standing Orders’ and BHAGIs prior to the medical briefing and the Senior Racecourse Medical Officer, at the actual briefing, failed to check that the ambulance crews had read and understood the ‘Standing Orders’ and BHAGIs.
Having considered the evidence, including a written submission on behalf of the Executive, the Panel accepted an admission that it was in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3.
Noting that (i) the equipment deficiencies have been rectified and that all other failings identified at the medical inspection had been addressed; and (ii) in the opinion of the Chief Medical Adviser the deficiencies were of a minor nature,
the Panel cautioned the Executive as to its future conduct.

MAD MOOSE (IRE) - Nigel Twiston-Davies
SANDOWN PARK DECEMBER MEETING 2013
The BetVictor Tingle Creek Steeple Chase
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority held an enquiry on 9 January 2014 into a report that MAD MOOSE (IRE), trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, had refused to race in the BetVictor Tingle Creek Steeple Chase at Sandown Park on 7 December 2013. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Sandown Stewards following their enquiry of the same day, because the gelding had refused to race, been reluctant to race or tailed itself off, in both flat and jump races, on six further occasions in the previous 14 months.
Having considered the evidence, including evidence from Twiston-Davies, the Panel declared that with immediate effect under Rule (F)66 of the Rules of Racing, no further entries would be accepted for MAD MOOSE (IRE) for races run under the Rules of Racing.

A lack of positivity from Daryl Jacob about riding Big Buck's on his intended comeback in the Cleeve Hurdle led to other options being explored for the ride on the staying great this season, trainer Paul Nicholls said. Daryl Jacob and Paul Nicholls: No falling out It was revealed at the weekend that Sam Twiston-Davies would partner the four-times Ladbrokes World Hurdle hero when the Andy Stewart-owned 11-year-old returns from an absence of over a year at Cheltenham on January 25, and will keep the ride at the Festival in March. Big Buck's is unbeaten in 18 races since reverting to hurdling, being ridden in all bar two of those by Ruby Walsh, with Tony McCoy deputising when Walsh was injured. Walsh is no longer stable jockey to Nicholls, and is now riding full-time for Willie Mullins, with potential World Hurdle rides including Annie Power and Boston Bob. Nicholls said talks with Jacob had left him of the opinion that the latter viewed taking the ride as "something of a poisoned chalice", one that would leave him in a "no-win" situation. Nicholls wrote in his Betfair blog: "The big question for me was how keen was Daryl to ride the horse? The simple fact is that Daryl has never given me the impression that he was mad keen to ride Big Buck's. "If he had, then he could have been on the horse in the Cleeve Hurdle. End of story. And with Andy's full blessing and agreement. So there is no need for anyone to feel sorry for Daryl, or read anything wider into this decision. "Tough and difficult decisions have to be made in this game, and I won't shy away from them. "We have obviously been discussing Big Buck's' comeback for a few weeks at Ditcheat and it became clear to me that Daryl had doubts about riding him in the Cleeve, and that immediately put a big doubt in my mind. It was the lack of him being positive more than anything else. "So we talked it over at length and Daryl explained how he viewed the ride, almost as if he saw it as something of a poisoned chalice. "The simple fact is that Daryl has never given me the impression that he was mad keen to ride Big Buck's. For those who think that this is a big snub for Daryl - and plenty obviously do - then they should read this and think again. Daryl has the confidence of all our owners." "He explained that, in his opinion, Big Buck's was part of a past generation here at Ditcheat - the last remnant of the Kauto Star and Denman era, if you will - that he has never been part of that, and his focus was on the future. "It was as if he regarded the ride as being in a no-win situation. If Big Buck's won, it was all down the horse. If he lost, and that phenomenal unbeaten run with it, it was down to him. That is no way to approach any race. "Daryl has his eyes set firmly on horses of the future and that means continuing to ride the likes of Zarkandar, whom he gets on with so well. And if he had committed to Big Buck's, then who is to say that my other owners wouldn't have seen that as a snub. "So it was his mind-set that actually made up my mind up for me. If there is any negativity or doubt in a jockey's mind, then in my book he effectively rules himself out of the reckoning there and then. "I then approached Ruby and AP, who have both won on the horse, but neither would or could commit. So myself and Andy talked it over at some length these past few days, and on Friday I rang Daryl and Nick (Scholfield) to tell them of our decision. "It wouldn't surprise me if Daryl didn't feel a sense of relief at the news. And late on Friday we then told Sam that we would like him to ride the horse. "For Sam it is a totally different scenario, and in many ways a win-win situation. He is really looking forward to riding Big Buck's, which is what we want." Nicholls stressed that Jacob was not his retained rider but rather the main jockey at Ditcheat. He said: "For those who think that this is a big snub for Daryl - and plenty obviously do - then they should read this and think again. "There has been no falling out - Daryl will continue to ride for Andy and has the confidence of all our owners - it is just simply that a decision had to be made. And we made it."

The Liquidator is likely to be checked over in the next few days following his hugely disappointing effort in Saturday's Tolworth Hurdle at Kempton. The Liquidator: Will be checked over Winner of the Grade One bumper at the Punchestown Festival last April, the six-year-old made a huge impression in winning his first two starts over timber at Carlisle and Cheltenham and was a hot favourite for the weekend's Grade One feature. Trainer David Pipe admitted beforehand he was concerned the track would not suit his charge as well as Sandown, where the race was due to be staged a week earlier. However, even allowing for the switch of venues, The Liquidator was expected to fare far better than a well beaten fifth. His owner, Roger Brookhouse, said: "Nothing has come to light yet. I think they'll probably leave him alone today and have a look at him on Monday or Tuesday. He's obviously not run his race, so we'll see what happen

Felix Yonger could yet be Willie Mullins' main contender for the Racing Post Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival, with the champion trainer hinting Champagne Fever could be about to step up in trip. Champagne Fever: Could step up in trip Champagne Fever has won at the last two Festivals having landed the Champion Bumper in 2012 and the Supreme Novices' Hurdle last year and he got his fencing career off to a great start when scoring at Punchestown in November. However, he made a bad mistake two fences from home in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival and finished a well beaten third behind Paul Nolan's Defy Logic. Champagne Fever remains Arkle favourite, but is also prominent in the betting for the two-and-a-half-mile JLT Novices' Chase with the RSA Chase over three miles another possible alternative. Mullins' Felix Yonger beat Defy Logic comfortably at Punchestown in November, but also suffered a shock defeat last month as he failed to reel in stable companion The Paparrazi Kid at Limerick. "Champagne (Fever) has done everything right, but Felix Yonger hammered Defy Logic and Defy Logic won the race the other day," Mullins told At The Races. "Defy Logic was going right-handed around here (Punchestown). Maybe he is better going left-handed in Leopardstown. "He jumped and did everything right. He put it up to Champagne Fever and Champagne Fever didn't match up going down to the second last. "It's debatable how well he was going. Some people say he was going very well. Other people think maybe that's as good as he was. I think it was a fantastic performance out of Defy Logic. "On the formbook, Felix Yonger beat Defy Logic and Champagne Fever couldn't. "Champagne Fever can easily go out to two and a half miles and could even go out to three miles. He'd stay any trip, I think. He's an out-and-out galloper. "He's such a fantastic jumper he can win over two miles and that's why I've been campaigning up to now over two miles."

15:30 Monday 13th January Racing Tips - 13/01/2014
A competitive card at Plumpton this afternoon sees some opportunity to get into some well priced horses and I'm toying with backing 33/1 outsider Enchanting Smile. She isn't an obvious one but will handle conditions and is 17lb lower than her opening handicap mark over hurdles. I just worry about this sharp track putting pressure on her jumping, and there's every chance she wants further at a more galloping track. Further More is one to take on in first time blinkers as I think he wants better ground. I'm disappointed with the price of Brandon Thomas at 11/2 as think he should be bigger but still gets the nod here. He will handle conditions on breeding and, though he's related to some decent stayers, he hasn't looked as though further suits and returns to 2 miles 1 for the first time in 12 months, where his best efforts have come. The yard is going well this term and the form of his 2nd to Highrate at Hexham 14 months ago gives him every chance. Plumpton 13.30 - Brandon Thomas 1pt e/w
Marcus Antonius will have to go some to beat the likes of Saroque and Brick Red but I do think he looks overpriced at 28/1. He was a solid 2nd to Pendra at Lingfield on heavy ground on chase debut and the time that day suggested he is capable of a little better now in handicap company. He looked as though he wants a little further too so is of particular interest up in trip. The track will suit (not sure Ascot did on handicap bow) but the worry is the ground. He goes on it and some in is family went on soft but heavy is probably not ideal. The yard is searching for a first chase winner in some time but this boy has a chance on form. I think Saroque has the edge over De Blacksmith given a likely good gallop should turn this into a test in the ground and that's likely to suit the Venetia Williams trained 7 year old. 2/1 is respectable too so if you'd rather side with the favourite then he looks a solid option. Plumpton 15.00 - Marcus Antonius 1pt e/w
Another at a price who has course and distance winning form is The Red Laird who can be backed at a whopping 33/1. He's an 11 year old who does look out of form but his record here reads 14321 with the weakest of those runs coming over too short a trip. He is lightly raced and the fact that he won here 10 months ago off just 2lb lower gives him hope this afternoon. I like Sarando too who is well treated on the basis of his Hennessy run a while back but he hasn't looked the same horse since coming down in that race. He has gone well here before but I'm not convinced he sees out the trip. Virginia Ash is worth a bit of support at around 7/1 for a yard with some seconditis of late. He drops in class and weight and attempts to defend his crown off just 2lb higher with conditions seemingly ideal. That Mickie form from Newbury is well worth noting as one of the strongest bits of staying handicap hurdle form around and Brendan Powell seemingly opts for him over his fathers' trained Milans Well. Plumpton 15.30 - The Red Laird 1pt e/w

Sheikh Mohammed insists "the truth will out" as Lord Stevens continues his inquiry into the ruler of Dubai's equine operations. Sheikh Mohammed: Shocked The owner's Godolphin operation hit the headlines last year when trainer Mahmood al Zarooni received an eight-year ban from the British Horseracing Authority after admitting administering banned steroids to a number of horses in his care. There was then fresh controversy centred on endurance racing later in the year and Sheikh Mohammed's wife, Princess Haya, duly called in former London police chief Lord Stevens to oversee an internal inquiry. Sheikh Mohammed told the BBC: "He (Al Zarooni) doped them not for racing but for treatment for the long term and they would not come to see the races. "Now Lord Stevens will find out the whole story and we will all know what happened. "We put an investigator, Lord Stevens, to really go through everything and meet everybody and I think he is independent and doing a good job. He hasn't finished yet but I hope good luck for him. "The truth will come out because of independent Lord Stevens." Sheik Mohammed admitted his "shock" at the Al Zarooni affair and underlined that the trainer has no future with his organisation. "I was shocked, really," he said. "I have many trainers and if one of them does the wrong things, you know - they gave him eight years, and I gave him lifetime. Finished." Asked if he had seen the trainer, he added: "He comes and sees some other friends but he will never come near horses."

David Pipe could unleash his expensive purchase Un Temps Pour Tout in a potentially fascinating Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle at Haydock on Saturday. Pipe: Could run Un Temps Pour Tout at Haydock The Grade Two, registered as the Rossington Main Novices' Hurdle, has attracted 13 six-day entries including Un Temps Pour Tout, who could make his British debut in the contest having changed hands for 450,000 guineas at the DBS Hennessy Sale at Newbury. He was a Grade Three winner over hurdles in his native France and finished seven lengths off Ptit Zig in third when favourite For a Grade One at Auteuil in November. "We bought him five or six weeks ago and he has some very good form to his name in France," Pipe said. "He's been pleasing in his work at home, he's got options this weekend and the plan is to run in one of them. "He's in the Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle at Haydock and the 2m3f handicap hurdle at Ascot (as well as a novices' hurdle at Taunton). We'll look at the opposition and the ground and decide where he goes later in the week. "Hopefully he's a nice horse for the future." Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins has engaged Navan winner Sizing Tennessee, Leopardstown scorer Sure Reef and Valseur Lido, unbeaten in two starts at Cork and Navan this term. Nicky Henderson's Stand To Reason has won his two starts to date this term while Zamdy Man, trained by Venetia Williams, beat subsequent winner Oscar Hoof over Saturday's course and distance last time. Sgt Reckless has been keeping good company of late and the entries are completed by Abracadabra Sivola, Big Casino, It's High Time, Maybe I Won't, Meadowcroft Boy and River Clare. Sky Bet Supreme Trial, sponsors prices: Un Temps Pour Tout 2/1, Valseur Lido 11/4, Stand To Reason 13/2, Zamdy Man 8/1, Sizing Tennessee 9/1, Meadowcroft Boy 9/1, 11/1 Bar.

Sire De Grugy is among 10 hopefuls still in the Grade One Sodexo Clarence House Chase over two miles and a furlong at Ascot on Saturday. Sire De Grugy: Heads Ascot entries Gary Moore's talented chaser has won the Tingle Creek and the Desert Orchid Chase this season, and, in the absence of Sprinter Sacre, he looks likely to bid for his third win in four starts for the campaign at the weekend. Heading the opposition is 2012 winner Somersby, second to Sire De Grugy in the aforementioned Tingle Creek. Oiseau de Nuit, also runner-up to Sire De Grugy at Kempton, is another possible runner along with Nicky Henderson's French Opera. Kauto Stone could represent Paul Nicholls, last time out Ascot winner Lancetto is entered for Evan Williams and Emma Lavelle's talented novice Fox Appeal could drop back in trip. Henry de Bromhead's pair Special Tiara and Days Hotel head a strong Irish challenge, with Hidden Cyclone also set to make the trip over.
