Plumpton passes morning inspection after dry night ============================================== JUMP racing in Britain continues to be battered by the weather with fixtures abandoned at Chepstow and Fontwell next week and inspections at several other courses.
While Plumpton managed to scrape through an inspection on Sunday morning, the news was not so good from Chepstow and Fontwell with both tracks waterlogged.
Fontwell was the first to call off its Thursday meeting after another 8mm of rain fell on Saturday. While Sunday was forecast to be bright, the course is expecting significant rain again before racing.
Tracy Skinner, executive director at Fontwell, wrote on Twitter: "We've had 265mm in 21 days and are waterlogged. No chance of the ground improving with further rain forecast."
A similar fate befell Chepstow with Tuesday's meeting called off after an inspection on Sunday morning. The ground was described as waterlogged with false patches by course officials.
Inspections were also called on Sunday morning for Southwell, Leicester and Huntingdon with rain and flooding causing concern at all three courses.
Southwell will inspect at 7am on Monday morning for a jumps card later the same day while there is an 8am inspection at Leicester for racing on Tuesday. The course is waterlogged in places with rain due on Sunday and Monday.
Huntingdon's clerk of the course Sulekha Varma is hopeful Friday's fixture will pass an inspection at 11am on Wednesday.
"Flooded last night. Water still rising. Inspection 11am Wed. All not lost but need water to start receding soon!," Varma wrote on Twitter. ==============================================

Biddlecombe, who won the title in 1965, 1966 and shared the honours with Bob Davies in 1969, married former trainer Henrietta Knight in 1995.
Biddlecombe also won the Gold Cup in the saddle when he rode Woodland Venture to victory in 1967 and went close to winning the Grand National when Gay Trip was second in 1972.
Knight and Biddlecombe were to enjoy fantastic success with the likes of Edredon Bleu, Lord Noelie and Impek but will forever be remembered for their association with Best Mate, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times.
Best Mate's exploits brought Knight and Biddlecombe very much into the public eye and they were seen as racing's odd couple.
Jim Culloty, who partnered Best Mate to all three triumphs in the Gold Cup, Gold Cup, was champion amateur in his first season with Knight and Biddlecombe and spent 10 years as their stable jockey.
Now a successful trainer in Ireland, he said: "I would rather celebrate his life than mourn his death. The pace at which Terry lived his life, unfortunately he was never going to go on forever.
"I met him about a month ago and we had dinner together. Physically he obviously wasn't great, but mentally he was in great form, as usual.
Jim Culloty "I would rather celebrate his life than mourn his death. I knew him for 20-odd years and I could write a book about all the things that happened - he was apparently relatively quiet when I knew him. He was a great fellow and a great character. He was larger than life and lived it to the full."
Jim Culloty
"I knew him for 20-odd years and I could write a book about all the things that happened - he was apparently relatively quiet when I knew him. He was a great fellow and a great character. He was larger than life and lived it to the full."
Tony McCoy also struck up a good relationship with Knight and Biddlecombe, partnering Best Mate to victory in the 2002 King George VI Chase at Kempton and Edredon Bleu to a thrilling triumph in the Queen Mother Champion Chase two years earlier.
The 18-times champion jockey told At The Races: "I spoke to Hen on Wednesday and I was going to go and see him on Thursday or Friday, but she said he had a bit of a chest infection and I should leave it for a few days.
"She rang me this morning and said he had sadly passed away very peacefully, which I suppose is a good thing, if there is a good thing.
"He was a great man and had a great life. If he was still here he'd have told you that himself. He came to my party for my 4,000th winner and Henrietta said that was the last time he was out.
"I was lucky I had a lot of success with himself and Hen - a Champion Chase on Edredon Bleu and a King George on Best Mate. I've been very friendly with him since and it's sad, but he lived a great life, that's for sure."
Former school teacher Knight and Biddlecombe may not have appeared a match made in heaven but their enduring partnership was an unqualified success both on and off the track.
Knight quit the training ranks in May, 2012 to help look after her husband and the horses in her care moved on to Mick Channon, where she still plays an active part in the training of the jumpers.
The news was confirmed on Knight's Facebook page with a notification reading: "Sadly, Terry died peacefully after breakfast this morning with Henrietta by his side."
Channon has been with Knight throughout the morning and admits the news is difficult to take.
He said: "I have known Terry for a while now, not as long as some of the older jockeys, obviously, but he was a great man and in the time I've known him he became a great friend.
"Since the stroke it has been very difficult for everybody, but Hen has been absolutely amazing through it all.
"They were such a fantastic couple and Hen has been such a devoted carer and wife. They were totally dedicated to each other.
"Terry was a great character and a great friend and it's just very sad. He will be sadly missed by everyone. I'm a bit choked up about it. I don't know what else to say."
"Henrietta Knight and Terry Biddlecombe were to enjoy fantastic success with the likes of Edredon Bleu, Lord Noelie and Impek but will forever be remembered for their association with Best Mate, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times."
Davies, now clerk of the course at Ludlow, looked backed fondly on his time spent with his former weighing room colleague and said: "We shared the title in 1968-69 and I think Terry was second to me the following season.
"When we shared the title, in the second half of the season I stayed with Terry most of the time, so we usually went racing together.
"The season went on into June that year because of Foot And Mouth disease and I remember it finished on a night at Uttoxeter.
"After the season finished we went on holiday together and had a great time. We had some great times together."
As the owner of Best Mate, Champion Chase and King George hero Edredon Bleu and the talented Impek, Jim Lewis enjoyed a long-term friendship with Biddlecombe and Knight.
Lewis said: "It is awful news and I want to pass on my love and sympathies to Henrietta, both from myself and Jennifer (wife).
"Terry was a major part of the success I had as an owner with Best Mate, Edredon Bleu and Impek. His input was vital to the victories we secured.
"People called them the odd couple, but in actual fact, there was nothing odd about them at all. They were simply madly in love with each other.
"It was an honour and a privilege to be with Terry for some of his greatest triumphs out of the saddle."
The tributes on Twitter are unsurprisingly widespread, with eight-times champion jockey Peter Scudamore saying on his feed: "Sorry to hear of the death of Terry a real hero who walked with kings and filled the unforgiving minute ."
Dominic Elsworth rides the majority of the jumping string Channon inherited from Knight.
He said: "Forever indebted to Terry Biddlecombe! Always gave me time for advice, and was a great man to listen to. A true legend!! R.I.P."
Mick Fitzgerald was a leading jockey in Britain for a well over a decade before his retirement in 2008.
He told At The Races: "It's a very sad day and I owe Terry Biddlecombe a debt of gratitude that words can't even express.
"When I got the job as stable jockey for Nicky Henderson, I made a lot of mistakes and Nicky got me to sit down with Terry on numerous occasions.
"He went through videos of races with me and helped me become the jockey that I turned out to be.
"He inspired me to become a jockey's coach, which I am now. I try and pass on a bit of the information and a bit of help that Terry Biddlecombe gave to me.
"I want to pass on my sincere sympathy to his family and Henrietta Knight. They were inseparable and my thoughts are very much with her and Terry's family

Owner Robert Waley-Cohen is keen for Long Run to have his next race in the Kempton Park Chase on February 22. Long Run: Could run at Kempton A tilt at the Grand National for the 2011 Gold Cup winner has long been on the cards but Waley-Cohen is keen to take in another valuable handicap first with Nicky Henderson's charge falling down the ratings. Waley-Cohen told the Sunday Mirror: "Owner, jockey and trainer all have different ideas where the horse should go next. "But I'm fairly hopeful I'll get my way, in which case he'll be heading back to Kempton. He's got a great record at the track and he's now 19lb lower than at his peak two seasons ago. "Handicaps are an attractive option again now his rating is coming down. The Kempton race is worth a lot of money so I'd be keen for him to take his chance. "It's the same with the Grand National. Two years ago we wouldn't have dreamt of running him in the race, but now I'd doubt if he'd even be top weight

Tranquil Sea is likely to get an entry in the Crabbie's Grand National following a fine first run for new connections at Chepstow. Grand National aim for Tranquil Sea Trainer Warren Greatrex was delighted with the performance of his new recruit in finishing second behind Renard last week, and is now considering the world's greatest steeplechase at Aintree in April for the former Irish-trained gelding. The famous fences hold no fears for Tranquil Sea as the Grade One winner completed in both his races round the National course when trained by Edward O'Grady. "He's great. We were very happy with the run. He'll come on a bit as we had a little bit to work with," said Upper Lambourn-based Greatrex. "He showed he had plenty of fire left in his belly and we'll look for a race at the end of this month. "He probably will get a Grand National entry. The dream is still alive, as it were. I did tell Gavin (Sheehan) to be a bit sympathetic with him (at Chepstow). I didn't want him crucified on his first run for me and he's come back in great heart. "Hopefully, if we can improve on that, which I'm sure we can, we can have some good days with him yet."

Mick Winters feels it is unlikely his stable stars Missunited and Rebel Fitz will be lining up at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Mick Winters: May bypass Cheltenham Missunited enjoyed a tremendous campaign in 2013, running well and winning in Listed company on the Flat before following in the hoof prints of Rebel Fitz to give Winters back-to-back victories in the Galway Hurdle. She was last seen finishing a fantastic third in the Group One Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp in October and although Winters suggested she could return to the jumping game this spring, with a possible clash with the mighty Quevega at Cheltenham considered, he has now had a change of heart. Winters said: "She is still with her owner at the moment, but she's going out doing six or seven miles cross-country every morning. I'd say she'll come back to me in maybe a month, but she won't be going to Cheltenham I don't think. "We did think about the mares' race there, but she's rated 145 over hurdles and Quevega is rated in the 160s, so it would be tough. I think the next time you'll see her will be on the Flat and we are looking at running in one of the long-distance races at Royal Ascot, if all goes well." Rebel Fitz has won five of his seven starts over fences, but suffered an odds-on reverse on his first run in Britain at Cheltenham in October. Like Missunited, he has enjoyed a winter break and while he is now back in training, Winters is not sure a return trip to Prestbury Park will bring out the best in his charge. "He's back in and cantering away, but I think he's more of a home bird than a Cheltenham horse," said the trainer. "You never know, things can change overnight if some of the big guns drop out, but if he went to Cheltenham, I think it would take him two months to get over it and there is plenty of good money on offer at home. "I'm not sure where he'll go. The way the weather is at the moment it will be March by the time the ground dries up, so we'll see."

Plumpton, 5 January 2014
In all chase races the first fence in the home straight will be omitted due to the wet ground.
2.20, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Veterinary Officer that the passport of MACCABEES, trained by Roger Curtis, was not available for inspection and therefore the gelding could not run. Having heard his evidence they found him in breach of Rule (E)15.3 and fined him £290.
3.20, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Aidan Coleman the rider of BROWNS BROOK (IRE), on the final bend. They interviewed the rider. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the gelding being slightly awkward around the bend and stumbling. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved, the Stewards took no further action.
3.50, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Clerk of the Scales that Conor Shoemark, the rider of HOLD THE BUCKS (USA), placed second, had weighed in at 10st 1lb, having weighed out at 9st 12lb. They interviewed the rider and Daniel Steele, the trainer, and the Clerk of the Scales. Having heard their evidence the Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (C)43.5.3 in that he had added equipment. They fined him £290.

Southwell, 5 January 2014
12.40, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into why the Starter was unable to use the Starting Stalls for the first race. They interview the Starter, the Clerk of the Course and the Stalls Team Leader. The Starter stated that on arriving at the start to perform the pre-race check he discovered the stalls were not working correctly which required the race to be started by flag. The Team Leader stated that the Stalls had been tested and were working correctly prior to racing. However, on closer examination it was discovered that the starting arm had developed a slight crack which had created the problem and had to be replaced. Having heard their evidence the Stewards noted their explanation.

Lingfield Park, 4 January 2014
1.25, fourth race
Adam Kirby, the rider of THE MONGOOSE, unplaced, reported that the gelding moved poorly in the closing stages.
2.00, fifth race
Adam Kirby, the rider of ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (AUS), unplaced, reported that the gelding was denied a clear run on the home turn.
04/01/2014
Newcastle, 4 January 2014
1.05, third race
The Veterinary Officer reported that SHOOTING TIMES, unplaced, trained by Lucinda Russell, had bled from the nose.
1.40, fourth race
The Stewards considered the running of ETXALAR (FR) ridden by Peter Buchanan and trained by Lucinda Russell, which was pulled up. The Stewards noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding was unsuited by the ground, (heavy, soft in places), and which in her opinion was too tacky for the gelding. They ordered ETXALAR (FR) to be routine tested.

13:25 Monday 6th January Racing Tips - 06/01/2014
There are reasons to oppose the top 2 in the Southwell opener, though Morestead should probably edge favouritism. AP back on is a plus but the way he gave away a gift when left in front last time is a little off putting. He is a firm ground winner but handles conditions and is really the best of a bad bunch. Decent Lord was well supported last time before unseating and is at home in these condition but he doesn't make a habit of winning and this looks a race to pick something a little less exposed. If the ground was better then Cooldine Run could be on a handy mark and the drop back to 2 miles is interesting. So too for The Informant who looks to be a stayer on pedigree but has been pulled up on 3 starts over fences between 2 miles 4 and 3 miles 2. He has dropped to 23lb below his handicap opener and this return to shorter, given he won a heavy ground bumper over 14 furlongs, could spring a surprise at 12/1. I'd like to see him back out in front with a clear view of his fences, though am not sure that'll happen. New headgear is tried again and he's clearly got his issues but that bumper form ahead of Letemgo gives him a massive chance. Southwell 12.25 - The Informant 1pt e/w
Next up at Southwell looks a race to focus on the top 2, if only because the nearest challenger is probably a little closer to them in the market than he should be. Venetia Williams' horses are in good form and a rainy January is likely to see that continue. However, Old Way has plenty to prove on chase debut even with conditions in his favour. I'm just not sure he wants this far. The same can be said for likely 2nd favourite Off The Wall who ran a good race at 6/1 last time over 2 miles 5 without proving he wants any further. The form is solid but I'd be more confident with him returning to a similar trip. The strongest claim goes to Shouldavboughtgold who, on the face of it, looks harshly treated up 7lb for throwing away victory last time at Wetherby. However, he was idling as opposed to tiring and cheekpieces may help him focus this afternoon on his 3rd chase start. There's bundles of stamina on his dam side to help him see out a slog over 3 miles half a furlong and I fancy he should be shorter than 9/4 with Dickie Johnson up top. Southwell 12.55 - Shouldavboughtgold 2pt win
I'm toying with whether to back Earth Amber in the 14.30 but I've lost money on her before and there's an element of chasing money in wanting her to win on hurdles bow. Ultimately I think the market looks about right with Wadswick Court edging favouritism and there's no real angle to exploit. The mares handicap hurdle has some solid form coming into this and those prominent in the betting present strong cases. Hopitana is seeking a hat trick this afternoon and she clearly handles testing conditions but this mark is now a lofty one and she looks vulnerable. Of more appeal is Fountains Mary who should be a stronger favourite and sits pretty at 11/4. She won a good ground 3 mile 1 contest at Taunton last time but seems to travel better with a bit of juice underfoot. Off the bridle a long way out, she battled on gamely and still recorded an ok time for the class so just a 1lb rise can be exploited in more favourable conditions. She showed a handle for heavy ground when 2nd to Carole's Spirit on hurdles debut and the latter is one of the most progressive mares going over hurdles. Southwell 13.25 - Fountains Mary 2pt win

Defy Logic remains on course to bid for further Grade One honours in the Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase at Leopardstown on January 26. Defy Logic: Will go for the Irish Arkle Paul Nolan's smart hurdler made a most impressive start to his career over fences at Naas at the end of October, but was then beaten in the Grade Two Craddockstown Novice Chase at Punchestown. The seven-year-old then faced Champagne Fever in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown and came out on top after a thrilling duel down the back straight. Defy Logic is now among the leading contenders for the Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival in March, but the Irish equivalent is Nolan's main priority at this stage. He said: "Everything is fine with the horse. We're very pleased how he came out of the race. "The ground in Leopardstown was a bit nicer than we'd have liked, ideally, but he seemed to handle it well. I think he'd just prefer the ground a bit easier as it is easier on his limbs. "The day before in Punchestown they didn't go much of a pace - he got banged into early on and then missed the second-last - so we were hopeful he could improve on that and thankfully he did. He jumped super in Leopardstown. "We'll look towards the Irish Arkle with him now. That is our main target and we'll see where we go after that. "Cheltenham would be on the radar, but we want to get his next run out of the way."

Godolphin have announced that some of the horses, including St Leger winner Encke, banned from racing due to the Mahmood Al Zarooni scandal will return to action in the coming months. Mickael Barzalona celebrates as Encke wins the St Leger in 2012 Encke has not been seen since he foiled Camelot's bid to land the Triple Crown at Doncaster in 2012 but will go back into training with Charlie Appleby in Newmarket, with the intention of running in Europe later this year. Steeler, who joined Godolphin from Mark Johnston after finishing third in the Racing Post Trophy in 2012, is in line to run on Thursday at Meydan, while Certify, unbeaten as a juvenile in 2012 with wins in the May Hill and the Fillies' Mile, will reappear later in the Carnival. Racing manager Simon Crisford told "We decided recently to continue with some of the horses who did not race last year. "They include current entries Artigiano and Steeler plus Certify, who will be aimed at the top fillies' contests during the Carnival. "Encke is also in training and will go for races in Europe later in the year." Twenty-two former Al Zarooni-trained horses were suspended from racing between April and October last year after testing positive for banned anabolic steroids. Al Zarooni was banned from the sport for eight years with his Newmarket stables taken over by Appleby.

Hurricane Fly, Jezki and Our Conor, the first three home in the Ryanair Hurdle over Christmas, are among just seven entries for the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle back at Leopardstown on January 26. Hurricane Fly holds off the late challenge of Jezki to score Hurricane Fly will be bidding for an amazing 19th Grade One victory and, in an ominous warning to his younger rivals, trainer Willie Mullins predicts there is even more to come from the 10-year-old, who has won the Irish Champion for the last three years. "He seems to be in great form and he has come out of his race at Christmas well," said the County Carlow handler. "This race was always the plan for him and I think there is a bit more improvement to come." Jessica Harrington's Jezki performed admirably taking on the champion for the first time and may have finished even closer, but for meeting a little trouble in running. Frank Berry, racing manager for owner JP McManus, said: "He ran a good race the last day and he has come out of it well and we are looking forward to running him again later on this month." Danny Mullins, who rides the Dessie Hughes-trained Our Conor, expects his mount to improve after the partnership finished third in the Ryanair. He said: "It was his first run of the season and I think he will improve a good bit from that. He jumped the last upsides 'The Fly', and not too many horses do that. "He is the best hurdle horse that I have ridden. It was a true-run race the last day and they didn't hang around. "My horse was having his first run over hurdles since March so I'd expect him to come on a good bit for the run." Mullins can also chose from two exciting unbeaten prospects in Annie Power and Un De Sceaux - as well as the veteran Thousand Stars. Eddie Harty's admirable veteran Captain Cee Bee, who acted as the pacemaker in the Ryanair, is the only other entry.

Southwell, 6 January 2014
12.25, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, THE INFORMANT, ridden by Andrew Thornton and trained by Seamus Mullins, compared with its previous run at Plumpton on 16 December 2013 where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that THE INFORMANT was suited by the drop back in trip from two miles four furlongs to two miles and also the application of cheekpieces for the first time. They ordered THE INFORMANT to be routine tested.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Andrew Thornton, the rider of the winner, THE INFORMANT, from the fourth-last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Thornton for 2 days as follows: Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 January 2014.
12.55, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference after the last fence. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner HIGH RON, ridden by Andrew Thornton, had interfered with SHOULDAVBOUGHTGOLD (IRE), placed second, ridden by Richard Johnson. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved HIGH RON’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, HIGH RON, ridden by Andrew Thornton and trained by Caroline Bailey, compared with its previous run at Towcester on 24 November 2013 where the gelding finished sixth of ten, beaten by approximately 52 lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that the gelding was suited by being able to dominate on this occasion. They ordered HIGH RON to be routine tested.
06/01/2014
Wolverhampton, 6 January 2014
3.10, third race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, OUTLAW TORN (IRE), ridden by Robbie Fitzpatrick and trained by Richard Guest, compared with its previous run at Southwell on 10 December 2013, where the gelding finished eighth of twelve beaten 19 lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that OUTLAW TORN is better suited by Wolverhampton and has been working well at home since his last run. They ordered OUTLAW TORN to be routine tested.
3.40, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, PRIMACY (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry and trained by Neil Mulholland, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the mare seemed unsuited by the track and surface at Southwell and better suited by Wolverhampton. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of PRIMACY (IRE) could be reviewed.
06/01/2014 ==========================================
Southwell, 6 January 2014
1.25, third race
The Stewards considered the running of GULF PUNCH, ridden by Jason Maguire and trained by Donald McCain, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the mare’s performance.
3.30, seventh race
The Veterinary Officer reported that FRANGIPANI LADY, which was pulled up, trained by Nick Williams, had bled from the nose.
06/01/2014
Wolverhampton, 6 January 2014
3.40, fourth race
Adam Kirby, the rider of LAYLA’S BOY, unplaced, reported that the gelding moved poorly.
Jimmy Quinn, the rider of IMPECCABILITY, unplaced, reported that the filly ran flat.

======================================== 13:15 Tuesday 7th January Racing Tips - 07/01/2014
Fascinating little Selling Hurdle today at Leicester which sees 3 re-oppose who recently ran over course and distance. The Jugopolist was very keen that day in first time blinkers and really didn't help his chances, though he is effectively 2lb better of with Stow. Best off at the weights is last time's winner Belle De Fontenay who returns off the same mark but I do think she wants better ground. Stow likes to make all and that, combined with the keeness of Rebecca Curtis' charge, meant a real test that day but this afternoon is likely to see the top weight have it more his own way up top as The Jugopolist settles better in his preferred visor. Stow is far better on testing ground and clearly loves it here having followed up with a course and distance win at the end of last month. I think he is the one to beat this afternoon at 13/8, in search of an 11 day hat trick, with The Jugopolist the main danger. Zanir is of interest and the yard is in decent form but he may be best watched on return from a lengthy absence over a trip that may be too far. Leicester 13.15 - Stow 2pt win
Edmund Kean is an exciting prospect on chase debut and he will love the ground this afternoon. He is well treated in this company on the basis of the pick of his hurdles runs but backing a chase debutant at a short price against capable and more experienced opposition is risky business. Muldoon's Picnic wasn't guaranteed to handle soft ground last time but was a taking winner, if a little fortunate. This is tougher and, while he isn't harshly penalised, even worse ground is unlikely to enhance his chances. Renard D'Irlande is a likeable sort but this may be too much of a test for him and, on the basis of their run behind Easter Day, I can't quite work out the price disparity between he and What's Happening. The latter is giving the Williams horse a further 4lb this afternoon but he had him comfortably held at Newbury and trip/conditons are more in his favour. It was an abysmal run last time but he was never travelling and is worth forgiving with 17/2 available today. I'm a big fan of Le Reve and if the going was any better he'd be in bold, though there's every chance he wants even more of a test. Leicester 13.50 - Whats Happening 1pt e/w
Venetia Willimas gets the best out of her runners on testing ground at this time of year and best bet of the day comes in the form of Massena. A comfortable winner over hurdles at the start of the winter campaign off just 3lb lower, he looks a better chasing prospect and it's something of a surprise he's yet to get of the mark in this sphere. He bumped into a progressive sort on penultimate start in tougher company than this and then suffered at the second last at Uttoxeter when looking certain to score well - Liam Treadwell lost his irons and the pair went down by under a length. This ground holds no concerns over the shortest distance and I'd side with him at evens or bigger, currently 13/8. There are a couple of interest at a bigger price but all have a bit to prove. Pick of the prices woud be Bin End, a soft ground winner that drops significantly in class after picking up decent prize money for a 44 length 3rd behind Dodging Bullets. Egypt Mill Spirit is another danger at 10/1 on first start for some 22 months. He should handle conditions given his pedigree, though there is a question mark there, and Tom George is capable of having one ready first up. Leicester 14.55 - Massena 3pt win

Oliver Sherwood is considering Deputy Dan for the Grade Two Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle over two miles and five at Warwick on Saturday. Deputy Dan: Warwick possible The six-year-old won two of his three starts in bumpers last term and got off the mark at the third time of asking over hurdles with an impressive 19-length success on heavy ground at Chepstow on December 28. He had shaped encouragingly in his first two outings over hurdles, finding only Champagne West, who won by 10 lengths at Wincanton next time, a length too strong in a course and distance event on December 8 and losing out to Oscar Fortune by a similar margin at Carlisle on November 3. Sherwood reported: "I haven't looked at the entries for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle yet and need to discuss it with the owner, so I will assess it and make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday. He is in there with the idea to run, but I just want to see how he progresses during the week. "He has come out of Chepstow in brilliant form and I am very much aware of capitalising when the ground is like this. He obviously loves it and other horses don't. "I think he should be up to this sort of level. They put him 10 pounds for winning at Chepstow and he is now rated 132, so he is entitled to have a go at this instead of going for an ordinary novice race." A high-class entry also features Creepy (Martin Keighley) and Killala Quay (Charlie Longsdon), winners of Neptune Investment Management-sponsored Grade Two contests at Cheltenham and Sandown respectively, decisive Ascot scorer Royal Boy (Nicky Henderson)and the unbeaten Red Sherlock (David Pipe). Other notables include highly-regarded Wetherby victor Diamond King (Donald McCain) and dual hurdle winners Vice Et Vertu (Henry Daly) and Spirit Of Shankly (Charlie Longsdon), while Irish interest comes in the shape of the Willie Mullins-trained Rathvinden, who has won two bumpers and a maiden hurdle on his three starts to date.

The BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase picture could become a whole lot clearer at Ascot on January 18 as an initial 19 entries were made for the Sodexo Clarence House Chase. Sire De Grugy: Ascot possible The Grade One contest has been the stepping stone to Champion Chase success for four horses previously; Viking Flagship in 1994, Call Equiname in 1999, Master Minded in 2009 and Sprinter Sacre last year. With the latter's participation at the Cheltenham Festival up in the air, this year's renewal might have an open look to it but Sire De Grugy could bid to stamp his authority further on the division following his wins in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown and the Desert Orchid Chase at Newbury. He heads 19 entries for the Ascot race, with the horses that chased him home at Sandown and Kempton, Somersby and Oiseau De Nuit, also potential runners. The best of the Irish two-mile chase form could also be represented with Hidden Cyclone, Special Tiara and Days Hotel entered. Nicky Henderson might be missing Sprinter Sacre but he still has three entries in Captain Conan, French Opera and Kid Cassidy, while Tom George is also triple-handed with Rody, Majala and Module. There's a clutch of novices that could take their chance with Paul Nicholls' Hinterland a possible along with Alan King's Valdez and Emma Lavelle's Fox Appeal, while Nicholls also has Kauto Stone to call upon. Astracad, Doeslessthanme and Lancetto complete the entri

Tim Doyle is keen to test Mallowney at a higher level after an impressive performance at Naas on Sunday. Mallowney: Impressive jumping The Oscar gelding proved too strong for the well-regarded Ned Buntline in the two-mile novice chase at the Kildare venue and impressed many with his jumping. Doyle's charge was a big improver over hurdles last season, but the Thurles handler has always felt his future lay over fences. The Grade One Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase at Leopardstown on January 26 or the Grade Two Flyingbolt at Navan on February 16 are the two races in contention for the eight-year-old. "I was delighted with him. He jumped well and travelled well. He's come out of the race A1," said Doyle "He's in the Arkle at Leopardstown and nearer the time we'll look at that. He'll step up in grade now and the Flyingbolt at Navan is another possibility. "The way he jumps, I'd say we'll stay at two miles with him. He does stay two and a half miles, but even over hurdles I should probably have stuck to two miles with him. "He seems to go on any ground. It's just a question of finding his level now and seeing how good he is."

07/01/2014 ============================================= 31 December - CHRISTMAS CRACKERS Gold Cup hopefuls
Head of Handicapping Phil Smith runs the rule over the Gold Cup contenders who competed this Christmas.
There are a number of ways of assessing horses and in the last week I have used three different methods to come up with my performance figures in the big races. In a perfect world you would find that one method is supported by another and when that situation occurs you can be more certain of the levels that you set.
In the William Hill King George Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, I initially used the collateral form approach. I used Mount Benbulben as my marker horse and as he was agreed at 160 in last year’s Anglo-Irish Jump Classification for his win at the Punchestown Festival, I tentatively took the view that he might have replicated it at Kempton. This gave Al Ferof a performance figure of 162, Cue Card achieving 173 and Silviniaco Conti performing to 177.
Did this make sense? This was Al Ferof’s first attempt at 3 miles so it was reasonable to have doubts about his ability to stay the trip. His rating coming in to Kempton was 168 based on his win in the Paddy Power of 2012. He looks a big player in the Ryanair or perhaps the Betfred Bowl at Aintree where he might get 3 miles on better ground.
My figures had Cue Card performing a pound worse than he did at Haydock which was perfectly understandable given the ground but I have left his rating on 174. Please don’t anyone say he doesn’t stay 3 miles. He clearly does stay as to perform in the 170’s is a real achievement and he clearly got 3 miles at Haydock. It was just that Silviniaco Conti who looked beaten to me 2 out stayed the 3 miles better on the ground. Cue Card is becoming an amazingly consistent horse at the top level as this was his fifth consecutive performance in the 170’s, no mean feat.
So does Silviniaco Conti on 177 make sense? Interestingly it equates to the median winning performance in the race this century which was Kauto Star’s run in 2008. That was the lowest performance of his five wins and the other two better performances than Silviniaco Conti’s effort this year were First Gold’s 178 in 2000 and Long Run’s 179 in the 2010 edition run the following month. It is no disgrace being called an average King George winner when Kauto is ahead of you.
I am content that Silviniaco Conti’s win is at this level. It is supported by collateral form and race averages but I believe he can be better at Cheltenham and he will need to be if he is to beat an in form Bobs Worth in the Gold Cup. What of Cue Card? He is clearly the most versatile of the top chasers in Britain and Ireland and I suspect he will get an entry in all three of the Grade 1’s at the Cheltenham Festival.
On the same day at Kempton, Annacotty won the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices Chase. It was impossible to use collateral form to assess this race as going in Annacotty was the lowest rated horse in the race and using Green Flag (145) as a marker would have made Annacotty a 155 horse. Yes he was blinkered first time but a 25lbs. improvement? No! Using race averages this would have made him the fifth best winner of the race this century as the median is 154. It was just not believable but what to do?
I resorted to using time comparisons. Silviniaco Conti carried 11st.10lbs and performed to 177 in a time 7.6 seconds faster than Annacotty who carried 11st.7lbs. At 4 lengths per second the time difference equates to 30 lengths. At one pound a length plus the 3lbs. difference in weight carried that makes Annacotty 177-33=144. I will be fascinated to see what figure other form organisations come up with for Annacotty. I have rated him the 11th highest in 13 editions of this race this century. There was no race in 2010. So will connections perceive this as a favourable handicap mark and run him in a handicap next time. I hope so to test me out. On his run before Cheltenham he was second off 130. Have the blinkers made more difference than I have catered for?
So I had used three different handicapping methods to help me assess the two big Grade 1’s in England so what about the Grade 1 in Ireland? The problem with the Lexus was that 8 of the 9 runners finished within 11 lengths of each other. This suggested it was a slowly run affair and my race reading skills confirmed that. The time was 1.46 seconds per furlong slower than standard.
Compare that with the Paddy Power Handicap run the day before on worse ground than the Lexus. It was won by the 124 rated Rockyaboya in a time that was only 1.39 seconds per furlong slower than average. It was going to be difficult to get the winner of the Lexus to a high performance figure.
This was confirmed when I saw the proximity of Foildubh who I had performing to 155 recently at Clonmel. If I went through him then it would bring Lord Windermere on 155 also. This was fine as I had him at that level when he won the RSA. It made Lyreen Legend improving a little to 158 and Sir Des Champs running nearly a stone below his best on 160.
Rubi Ball produced a 164, pretty creditable on his first go in a major Group 1 outside France. First Lieutenant a length ahead was on 165 and I called the winning distance of 1.5 lengths as 3lbs. as Bobs Worth was going away at the end giving him a 168 performance.
I was really impressed with Bobs Worth compared with the Haydock debacle where he was only at 134. The slowly run nature of the race did not suit him yet that is what champions do, they get the job done when events are not necessarily in their favour. Bobs Worth showed he is not just a slugger either.
In my view he won the Lexus because of his superior speed to his opponents NOT because he outstayed them. He is back on track and ready to defend his unbeaten record at Cheltenham. With Silviniaco Conti in the field and hopefully getting round next time he might need to perform better to win the Gold Cup in 2014 than he did this year.
I waited with anticipation to get an e mail from Noel O’Brien the Senior National Hunt handicapper in Ireland to see how he had assessed such a tricky race. He is a pound lower than I am as he called the winning distance 2lbs. not 3lbs. as I did. It was reassuring that our methodology was similar.
So three big races and I hope you have found the different approaches I took to assessing the races of interest. One of the most important qualities of being a Handicapper is flexibility. Races are all different in the way they are run and you can’t just use a one size fits all philosophy. Collateral form, race averages, time comparisons, they are all part of the Handicappers’ tools to assess horses.
Champion Hurdle Clues
Christmas is always a vital time as Champion Hurdle aspirants continue their preparation, writes David Dickinson
Kempton on Boxing Day saw a notable clash between The New One and My Tent or Yours in the Williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle.
As a race it was slightly unsatisfactory in that The New One had to make so much of his own running, however it was still a race he might have won with a better jump at the final flight. That My Tent or Yours was able to battle past him was a considerable feather in that horse’s cap and his rating is raised to 167, the same as The New One.
One interesting aspect of this race the was fact that Sametegal, Duke of Navan and Grumeti were all beaten much further than the ratings would have suggested. This was by no means an exception for the two day meeting.
Leopardstown’s Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle saw Hurricane Fly score a third success in the corresponding race. This was arguably his sternest test in the contest as he swept by Jezki, who was denied a clear run at a vital time, and Our Conor who faded late on after travelling strongly.
The fact that the pace was a bit of a muddle Captain Cee Bee shooting clear after Thousand Stars tried to slow things down after the first was probably less than perfect for any of the three principals but I would have thought Hurricane Fly will have run to a figure of around 170 in the contest, although I am yet to discuss the matter with my Irish counterpart Noel O’Brien.
Given that Hurricane Fly was 175 in last year’s Anglo-Irish Classification, it makes Willie Mullins reported assessment of his winner as having five pounds improvement to come look spot on.
Yes, Sire?
Sprinter Sacre’s sudden exit from Kempton’s Desert Orchid Chase left Sire De Grugy with the equivalent of an open goal.
And, while the seven-year-old, left in front too soon, never looked like missing, he was not overly impressive, needing only to run to 162 (7lb below his Tingle Creek-winning figure) to defeat gallant old-timer Oiseau de Nuit (154), in receipt of 4lb, by four lengths.
Likewise, with free-running favourite Grandouet over a stone below the level of his Henry V111 Novice Chase second earlier in the month, Dodging Bullets ran virtually to his mark in clinching a hat-trick in the Wayward Lad Novices Chase.
With a rating of 155 and his tendency to idle in front suggesting there is more in the tank, unbeaten Dodging Bullets deserves his spot as Britain’s leading hope for Cheltenham’s Arkle Chase in March.

Hopefully Catterick will survive the overnight deluge but heavy ground looks a certainty. That will make the North Yorkshire National a real test and it could be worth turning to the yard so good with staying chasers, that of Sue Smith. She has a few young, impressive stayers in the team and Green Wizard is a horse that can be added to that list. The team are in great form and this 8 year old turns up here after looking as though 3 miles perhaps wasn't far enough on good ground last time behind Green Flag, who went on to run a big race up in class next time. He made a terrible error early on penultimate start, in a classy race, which cost him but, a as heavy ground winner, deserves a shot at this at a tasty 16/1. I think Merlin's Wish will win but is too short at 5/2 with a few others bringing decent form into this and it's quite a step up. I was going to have Diamond Harry at what I thought would be about 7/1 but he is far shorter than that and it remains to be seen if he's back anywhere near his best. Catterick 14.35 - Green Wizard 1pt e/w
There's an interesting Group 2 at Meydan tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing Steeler on reappearance after nearly 15 months off. This is his debut for Godolphin and the Royal Lodge winner will take some beating if picking up where he left off at around 4/1. He was probably not suited but soft ground in the Racing Post Trophy, nor being kept company for the lead, but that form is solid and Raven's Pass, his sire, has produced some classy tapeta winners. Shuruq is the only filly in the race and has a solid chance if they go off fiercely up top. She is a 10 furlong winner here (UAE Oaks) and was keeping on over 8 furlongs in a Group 3 on penultimate start when they didn't go all that quick up front. Rerouted will have to improve a little to take this and is a 7 furlong winner here but looks to be progressive enough to compete at this level. He was running on last time over course and distance behind Soft Falling Rain, though is still perhaps vulnerable to something a little less exposed. Meydan 17.25 - Steeler 1pt win ===========================================

Thomas Crapper is likely to bypass the William Hill Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday and wait for a race at Ascot a week later. Thomas Crapper: May wait for Ascot Trainer Robin Dickin believes drier conditions might be on the way, which is swaying him towards a limited handicap hurdle at the Berkshire track. "I might wait and run him a week later at Ascot. It would depend on the weather," he said. "The forecast isn't encouraging - he doesn't like the ground too soft. "He is in good form and if anywhere got dry Kempton does, but I'm more inclined to wait for Ascot. Although we are going to have a bit of rain before Kempton I think the weather might get a bit better." Thomas Crapper made a fine start to the campaign, winning handicap hurdles at Cheltenham's October and November meetings before finishing eighth to Sunnyhillboy there last month. Dickin is edging towards possibly running Garrahalish in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle, though he does have other options for his Towcester Boxing Day winner. "He might well go to Warwick, depending on how the numbers go around declaration time on Friday morning," said the Alcester handler. "If it's single figures he will definitely be there. If it's double figures I might wait and go to Ascot with him, or I might even wait a bit longer and go to Cheltenham (at the end of the month). You've got to keep the options open and you have to be in it to win it."

Burns Pet Nutrition - headquartered just four miles from Ffos Las - is to be the new sponsor of the racecourse's principal race, the Welsh Champion Hurdle which will be run on Saturday 1 February and covered live on Channel 4. Medinas: Last year's Welsh Champion Hurdle hero The £50,000 race over two and a half miles was won last year by Medinas who went on to glory at the Cheltenham Festival. Tim Long, General Manager and Clerk of the Course at Ffos Las, said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Burns Pet Nutrition, not only a fantastic Welsh business that is renowned in its field throughout the British Isles but one that is located just down the road from the racecourse, is to sponsor our most high profile race from this year. "The 2013 renewal of the Welsh Champion Hurdle was most memorable and we are already looking forward to the big day next month when we will be delighted to welcome our new sponsor to the racecourse. "The 2013 race was well supported by Welsh trainers, with five of the 14 horses stabled in The Principality - and I'd say it was six because Welshman-in-exile Nigel Twiston-Davies also sent a runner." Veterinary surgeon John Burns, who founded Burns Pet Nutrition 20 years ago, said: "As a family business proudly based in west Wales, we are the most enthusiastic supporters of our community with a range of sponsorships including the Dogs' Day Out at Pembrey County Park. We support lots of local groups and community-based initiatives as well as providing assistance for national organisations such as Hounds For Heroes and numerous animal rescue charities around the UK. "We are now delighted to become sponsor partners with our local racecourse at Ffos Las which has put horse racing in west Wales firmly on the map over the last five years." The Welsh Champion Hurdle, which was won by Ffos Las chairman Dai Walters's star horse Oscar Whisky in its first year in 2011, became a limited handicap race last year to increase its competitiveness. Prize-money was also raised by 16% to encourage racehorse owners and trainers to run their horses. The business is also sponsoring the £30,000 West Wales National which is run on the same day. The three-and-a-half mile steeple chase could see the first appearance by Mountainous since his victory in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow Racecourse at the end of last year. The horse, trained in Herefordshire by Richard Lee, is also owned by Walters in partnership with James and Jean Potter.
