Davy Russell has described his "shock" at the loss of his retainer with Gigginstown House Stud. Davy Russell (left) has confirmed his split with Gigginstown Stud Russell rode a winner in the Gigginstown colours at Punchestown on Tuesday but was later informed by Michael O'Leary that after racing at Tramore 24 hours later, he would no longer be first choice jockey for the champion owner. Russell told "After the race, Michael asked me to come and have a cup of tea and then told me of his decision. I was shocked and had no idea it was going to happen. "I am very disappointed. I am not disappointed with Michael O'Leary, if that's the way he feels, then that's the way he feels. But I am disappointed for myself. "I'm a big boy, I know what I am going to have to do now and that is to work very hard. I still have a lot of belief in my own ability and am confident plenty of people will continue to use me." Russell, who had his final rides as retained jockey at Tramore on Wednesday, enjoyed a string of big-races successes for Gigginstown during a seven-year association. The rider felt Sir Des Champs, First Lieutenant and Weapon's Amnesty provided his most memorable moments though. "I rode a lot of winners for them, but those three probably gave me my best days," Russell said. "I had two great days with Sir Des Champs, the Hennessy at Leopardstown and the Jewson at Cheltenham. "Another great day was winning the Neptune at Cheltenham on First Lieutenant, but the best was on Charles Byrnes' Weapon's Amnesty. "I won on him twice at the Cheltenham Festival, the Albert Bartlett Hurdle and the SunAlliance Novice Chase. "He was an absolute flying machine and it was a real shame didn't stay sound."

Bryan Cooper kept his name firmly in the frame for the Gigginstown job with a double at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day. Bryan Cooper: Tightlipped at Fairyhouse However Eddie O'Leary, racing manager for his brother Michael's powerful racing and breeding operation, insisted on Wednesday that they are yet to firm up a successor to Davy Russell, who managed two seconds from three rides in O'Leary's colours at Tramore on his final day as first-choice rider for the operation. "We haven't decided anything. We're talking to a few and there's no news yet. When we know, you'll know," said O'Leary. Bookmakers Paddy Power quote Cooper, who rode Lieutenant Colonel to win in the Gigginstown colours at Fairyhouse, at 1/5 to get the job. Lieutenant Colonel confirmed himself a smart prospect with victory in the New Year Maiden Hurdle . The five-year-old was regaining winning ways after being beaten by the potentially top-notch Vautour at Navan last month. Cooper brought the Dessie Hughes-trained five-year-old to challenge To Choose for the lead on the turn for home. Jumping the second-last just in front, Lieutenant Colonel pulled clear and put in a fine leap at the final flight to go and win by 14 lengths. It was a particularly notable success for trainer Dessie Hughes, who saddled his first winner in this race in 1980 in the shape of Church Island, which he rode himself. Hughes said of the even-money favourite: "He improved from Navan and looks a decent horse. "He looks a stayer and is a great jumper. The majority of Gigginstown horses jump exceptionally well. "He should be able to compete in a few of the novices after that, and the horse that beat him in Navan must be a fair horse." Asked about the prospect of possibly losing Cooper as his stable jockey, Hughes said: "It would be a good job for him, but a big blow for me. It's taken me four years to make him - he's matured now and he's at his best. "Hopefully he would still ride for me as much as he can." Cooper and Hughes completed a double when Off The Charts, owned by JP McManus, took the Special Offers In Bobbyjo Bistro Handicap Hurdle, the 4/1 co-favourite getting the better of Day Dream Boy by a length and a half. "It's good that he's won anyway. He went up 4lb the last day for finishing second," said Hughes.

Flemenstar will not run again this season because of a tendon injury, but connections expect him to return to action next term. Flemenstar: Set to return next season The brilliant chaser, who joined the Tony Martin stable in the autumn having previously been with Peter Casey, made a winning reappearance in the Fortria Chase at Navan in early November. However, he was a late withdrawal from the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase after suffering a knock to a leg and is still receiving treatment for the problem. "We won't rush him and we're going to give him time. We're just looking after him," said owner Stephen Curran. "We're treating him at the moment, he's looking well and he's doing well. We're looking forward to the end of the year with him. "We'll get him back okay, there's no doubt about that, but we've got to mind him, and we will."

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Wayne Hutchinson, the rider of KUMBESHWAR, placed third, in the last three quarters of a mile. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Hutchinson for 7 days as follows: Wednesday 15 to Tuesday 21 January 2014 inclusive.

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MALLER TREE, ridden by Kieron Edgar and trained by David Dennis, compared with its previous run at Chepstow on 7 December 2013 where the gelding finished tenth of thirteen, beaten by 61 lengths. They noted the trainer’s representative’s explanation that MALLER TREE had benefitted from a drop in trip and the softer ground. They ordered MALLER TREE to be routine tested.

14:00 Thursday 2nd January Racing Tips - 02/01/2014
Not really taken with the jumps action today and the ground is a little concerning when we have so much rain. Southwell hosts a modest looking card but there are a few decent prices to be exploited and Caldercruix looks a good bet at around 12/1. The yard is having a decent time of it on the all weather an this runner loves Southwell, especially this trip. He has been tried here over 5 furlongs and a mile on his last 2 starts and both efforts would lead you to believe that a return to the trip at which he is most suited is required. He runs of 1lb higher than his last success (c&d) and the same as his previous win (c&d). Daniel Cremin is a capable claimer and he'll be suited by riding up with a likely strong pace. I like the chances of Masai Moon but he isn't getting any younger and still has a little to find with the selection. Of those nearer the top of the market I'd be behind Tellovoi who drops dramatically in class and has the masterful Adam Kirby doing the steering. Southwell 14.00 - Caldercruix 1pt e/w
I don't have many bets over at Meydan but some of the handicaps can throw up some strange old prices and it makes more appeal than some of the small field slogs over the sticks. Top weight Canwinn looks well treated as a course and distance winner lining up off 1lb lower than his last winning mark. He drops a few pounds from last time having never got into the race over a furlong shorter but he really wants a good test over a mile. That was evident here on penultimate start when a well held second behind a runner who would have been giving him a further 11lb in a handicap. The hope is that the likes of Somalian, Ghaamer and Warsaw really take them along here. He gets on well with James Doyle and the team has had a good run of things of late. I'm not sure what price he is but he's worth a small win bet. Mundahesh deserves to be favourite and is the choice of Paul Hanagan whilst Black Snowflake could have a little more to offer after a good run last time. However, he will not want too strong a pace. Meydan 17.05 - Canwinn 1pt win ==========================================

THERE will be a full set of fixtures on Thursday after Ayr and Huntingdon got the all clear to stage their jumps meetings. =============================================
Quotes Not looking good for Cork Officials at Cork are still out inspecting the course for Saturday’s meeting. Turf Club’s Cliff Noone said: “They were flooded yesterday and there’s a heap more rain forecast.” =============================================

Southwell, 2 January 2014
1.00, second race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of WE HAVE A DREAM, trained by Ann Stokell, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined her £140.
The Stewards noted that interference took place between MONNOYER, unplaced, and AMIS REUNIS, unplaced, inside the final furlong but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
1.30, third
SOFIAS NUMBER ONE (USA), ridden by Mark Coumbe, failed to pass the stands before going to the start. Being satisfied that it was due to circumstances beyond the rider’s control the Stewards took no further action.
3.00, sixth race
J R Jenkins, the trainer of SHARE THE DOSH, reported that the mare ran without a tongue strap because he had been unable to fit it.
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MARINA BALLERINA, ridden by Tim Clark and trained by Roy Bowring, compared with its previous run at Southwell on 1 January 2014, where the mare finished ninth of twelve beaten approximately 22¼ lengths. They interviewed the trainer who stated that he had no explanation for MARINA BALLERINA’s performance on the previous day but added that the mare was suited by the step up in trip and considered this race to be a weak race. Having heard his evidence they noted his explanation and ordered MARINA BALLERINA to be routine tested.
3.30, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of FATHER SHINE (IRE), ridden by Miss Megan Harris and trained by Shaun Harris, which appeared to be tenderly ridden throughout to finish sixth of nine beaten some 43 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that her instructions were to sit handy and push on in the back straight. She added that this was the first time she had ridden over the distance of two miles and had become extremely fatigued in the latter stages. The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
02/01/2014
Ayr, 2 January 2014
Due to the ground conditions, fences 1 and 8 to be omitted in all steeple chases.
3.20, seventh race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of TOUCH OF STEEL (IRE), trained by James Ewart, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £140.
02/01/2014
Huntingdon, 2 January 2014
The last fence in the back straight was omitted because of false ground.
1.40, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why JAKE HODSON, the rider of RINGA BAY, had jumped the inspection fence prior to the start. Having heard his evidence, they accepted his explanation that the gelding had been headstrong and he had been unable to prevent it from jumping the fence.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Aidan Coleman, the rider of MENTALIST (FR), placed second, from the third-last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Coleman for 2 days as follows: Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January 2014.
2.40, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Jake Greenall, the rider of ANSHANTOR (IRE), unplaced, failed to dismount his horse when it appeared to have gone lame. They interviewed the rider, and heard evidence from the Veterinary Officer and the Veterinary Surgeon who confirmed the gelding was significantly lame on examination. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)45.4 and suspended him for 10 days as follows: Thursday 16 to Saturday 25 January 2014 inclusive.
3.10, seventh race
The Stewards noted that CLOUDANTE (IRE), placed fourth, had interfered with ROUQUINE SAUVAGE, placed sixth, inside the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved CLOUDANTE (IRE)’s placing.
3.40, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference from passing the wings of the second-last hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, RIVER DEEP (IRE), ridden by Richard Johnson, had interfered with ZEROSHADESOFGREY (IRE), placed second, ridden by Trevor Whelan. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved RIVER DEEP (IRE)’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
02/01/2014
Wolverhampton, 2 January 2014
4.50, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Josephine Gordon, the rider of JUSTCALLMEHANDSOME, unplaced, from inside the two furlong marker. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she used her whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Gordon for 2 days as follows: Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January 2014.

It could be next stop the Cheltenham Festival for Ballyalton with his trainer Ian Williams happy to draw a line under his New Year's Day outing at the course. Ballyalton: Hated the conditions Owned by golfer Lee Westwood's father, John, Ballyalton suffered only his second career defeat when fourth to Aubusson in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at a drenched Prestbury Park. The equivalent race in March, over two miles and five furlongs, would be one option for the gelding, as well as the Supreme and Albert Bartlett. "We spent all week trying to avoid bad ground and he ended up running on the worst ground of all," said Williams. "He didn't enjoy it, but he's come back sound. "I'll have to catch up with John Westwood when he's back, but I think he's probably unlikely to run before Cheltenham. I'll talk to John before we decide exactly which way we

Kumbeshwar was Alan King's last runner "for a week or so" with the trainer still unhappy with the health of his string. Grumeti: On antibiotics after poor Kempton display Although Tickity Bleue dead-heated on New Year's Eve and Kumbeshwar was a respectable third in the Fairlawne Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Wednesday, Barbury Castle has been quiet of late after a good start to the season proper. "We have had only two winners since December 3 and while I have never been more delighted to get a dead-heat than I was at Warwick, the horses are clearly not right, so it is time to stop," King told www.alankingracing.co.uk. "Some horses have had inflammation in their lungs and we must get to the bottom of the problem. "It's a shame as we had made our best start to a season, and the horses were in terrific form in October and November, but a few alarm bells started to ring during Hennessy week and, though, Invictus apart, that was another good weekend, we have had precious little to celebrate since. "It is frustrating, but we need to be patient and do the right thing by the horses, so until they come right again it is best to take a pull. "Maybe a few years ago I would not have handled a similar situation so well and would have soldiered on, but you learn by experience and if the they are not right you have to be very careful. "The worst thing you can do is to run your horses when they might be carrying something - that could well mean losing the horse for later in the year when most of the big Festivals are run." King's Champion Hurdle hope Grumeti was one of the notable disappointments over the period and he said: "Grumeti's scope on the Monday before the Christmas Hurdle was good, but he ran no sort of race at Kempton and was beaten with half a mile still to run. "He blew very hard afterwards and came back wrong, so he is on antibiotics, but it just goes to show how hard it is to judge whether a horse is right or not before you run them. "Before Kempton Grumeti was showing all the right signs, so it is very difficult, but we will give him a bit of time now and if he comes right in time we could go for something like the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton in February."

The ground at Musselburgh could be terrible given the forecast rain overnight and early on. That just puts me off the otherwise likeable Pass Muster who is the form horse coming into this. He has developed a nice partnership with Adam Nichol and has an all important course and distance win to his name, though this is tougher up 15lb since then. Cadore has been 2nd on both recent starts here and deserves to be right up there. He should be better for easier ground and has shown he can be a threat of his current mark. Benalex Park is of interest but I think he should be bigger than 9/1 given what he has shown over hurdles, though the ground should be ideal. The one worth siding with is bottom-weight Shan Valley at 15/2 who should come on for her effort over course and distance last time. She is a winner over 2 and a half miles and it all happened a bit quick for her back in November when returning from 19 months off. She drops to a previous winning mark and her dam performed on heavy ground over in Ireland so conditions, especially over 2 miles, should not inconvenience. Musselburgh 13.40 - Shan Valley 1pt e/w
Lucinda Russel has a few good prospects this afternoon and I fancy her and Grant Cockburn to taste success with Kris cross. It's a muddling little race though and Lively Baron could be a lively danger in these conditions. The trainer and jockey also team up with Vallani in the preceding race, another bottom weight mare who should be better for softer underfoot conditions. She was placed here last time but that run was in truth a touch disappointing off a very handy mark. She is eased a further 3lb for this and is likely to improve for easier ground. Her last win came over this trip on heavy ground off a whopping 16lb higher and she has solid course and distance form including 3 places. She is yet to win here but I think she should be shorter than she was in the betting for her last run (7/2f) so <9/2 is worth taking. Solidago is a worthy favourite purely on yard form but I wonder about his stamina. The other of interest is Stitched In Time who is a good ground winner here but has claims on breeding of taking to this heavier going. Musselburgh 14.40 - Vallani 1pt win

Inspection called at Sandown Sandown's meeting on Saturday is subject to an inspection at 7.30am on the morning of racing, though the inspection could be brought forward to today. =================================================== Latest from Musselburgh The going remains soft, good to soft in places following 2mm of rain overnight, but heavy showers are forecast this afternoon. 2 hours ago ================================================= Greenall hit with ten-day ban Jake Greenall found himself on the wrong side of a ten-day ban after failing to dismount the unplaced Anshantor in the 2m5½f maiden hurdle at Huntingdon, despite the horse appearing to go lame. ============================================ Southwell: First winner for Santos Victor Santos, who was top of the cold jockeys list having gone 95 rides without success, punched the air in delight as he rode his first winner in the 7f handicap. SATURDAY'S meetings at Sandown and Wincanton are being given every chance to beat the heavy rain which has hit the south of England, with inspections scheduled at both tracks on the morning of racing.
Sandown's card, which has the Grade 1 32Red Tolworth Novices' Hurdle as its highlight, is subject to an inspection at 7.30am, but that could be brought forward to Friday should conditions worsen.
Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: "We've just spoken to the Met Office, and the outlook from about five o'clock tomorrow [Saturday] morning to ten o'clock is we could see another ten millimetres in that period. That's in addition to another six millimetres this [Friday] afternoon.
"It's not a lost cause, but it's getting tougher."
Later on Friday morning, Cooper issued a more positive bulletin when speaking on At The Races. He said: "I probably describe us as just about raceable as we stand. It's a very marginal decision and there are parts of the course I've never known quite as wet, but we would just about get through.
"We are hanging in there at the moment and just need help from the weather in the next 12- to 24-hour period. It's only right and proper we give it every chance of getting it on and do our best to do so, but it's going to be a close call."
At Wincanton, where there was an inspection on Friday morning, clerk of the course Barry Johnson is confident racing will be on, with another check set for 7am.
He said: "We had thirteen millimetres last night but the course has taken it brilliantly. The hurdles course is fine, on the chase course I have three fences that are giving me cause for concern.
"We'll have to see how much more rain we'll get. We could get seven or eight millimetres today and I'd be very confident we'll be fine. My only concern is the chase fences but if we have to knock out one or two that's what we'll do."
The two meetings form Channel 4's live coverage on Saturday, with four races from Sandown and two from Wincanton.
Sunday's meeting at Plumpton which features the At The Races Sussex National, and Monday's fixture at Taunton are both subject to inspections at 11am on Saturday, with the going at the tracks described as heavy, waterlogged in places. ==========================================================

MARTIN DWYER has been taken to hospital by ambulance after taking a nasty looking fall in the concluding stages of the opener at Southwell.
Dwyer's mount Columbian Roulette looked destined to win the race as he led the field before jinking violently to the left and sending his rider crashing to the ground.
Medics were quick to attend to the Derby-winning jockey who lost consciousness in the fall. He regained consciousness in the ambulance before leaving the track.
Dwyer was accompanied by the racecourse doctor to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
The absence of the designated number of medical staff on course has led to a lengthy delay in the rest of the meeting continuing. Reports suggest that the second race will gop off at least an hour late.
The Richard Guest-trained It's All A Game won the race under Billy Cray. =================================================

Bryan Cooper has been appointed as the retained rider to powerful owners Gigginstown House Stud. Bryan Cooper: Has landed the Gigginstown job The appointment had been widely expected following the news over the New Year that Michael O'Leary had opted to end the contract of Davy Russell. Cooper is one of the rising stars in the weighing room in Ireland and burst onto the scene in England with three winners at the Cheltenham Festival last season. He has already ridden a number of big-race winners for the team and O'Leary's brother and Gigginstown's racing manager Eddie O'Leary said on Friday afternoon: "I can confirm that Bryan Cooper will be our number one retainer. "He's a very good rider and I hope it will be the start of a long and happy association." There has been speculation that Ruby Walsh may now have first pick on the Gigginstown-owned horses in the care of champion trainer Willie Mullins, but O'Leary said: "That is not the case. Bryan will be the number one retainer for all our horses." O'Leary also revealed Russell would continue to ride for Gigginstown. "Davy will continue to ride plenty for us. There has been no falling out of any kind," he said. Russell, who had his final rides as retained jockey at Tramore on Wednesday, enjoyed a string of big-races successes for Gigginstown during a seven-year association. The rider felt Sir Des Champs, First Lieutenant and Weapon's Amnesty provided his most memorable moments though. "I rode a lot of winners for them, but those three probably gave me my best days," Russell told www.irishexaminer.com. He was an absolute flying machine and it was a real shame didn't stay sound."

Willie Mullins insists he has "absolutely no thoughts" on where Annie Power will make her next competitive appearance following her brilliant display at Cheltenham on Wednesday. Annie Power: Options remain open The six-year-old mare secured her ninth career victory from as many starts with another comprehensive defeat of the talented Zarkandar in the two-and-a-half-mile Dornan Engineering Hurdle, opening debate about what her March targets should be. She is prominent in ante-posts lists for both the Stan James Champion Hurdle over two miles and the three-mile Ladbrokes World Hurdle, while the OLBG Mares' Hurdle, dominated by stablemate Quevega, is another option. The man who will have the final call, however, is in no rush to commit to anything. He said: "She has come out of the race in good order. I'm very pleased with her. We haven't made any plans for her as yet. I have absolutely no thoughts on it." Annie Power would likely meet her incredible stable companion Hurricane Fly if she were to run in the Champion Hurdle, a horse who secured his 18th Grade One haul in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown last weekend. Mullins already has magnificent five-times winner Quevega lined up for another tilt at the Mares' Hurdle, so Paddy Power unsurprisingly expect Annie Power to instead step up in trip. Paddy Power himself said: "The temptation must be there for Willie Mullins to run her in the Champion Hurdle, but with Hurricane Fly looking as good if not better than ever, we think she'll probably line up in the longer World Hurdle." What race will Annie Power run in at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival? Paddy Power: 2/5 World Hurdle, 9/4 Champion Hurdle, 8s Mares' Hurdle. I have absolutely no thoughts on it." Will Kinsey feels Gwladys Street is on a competitive mark as the seven-year-old bids to open his account over fences in the Marriott Handicap Chase at Newcastle. A dual winner over hurdles last season, Gwladys Street had an unfortunate experience first time over fences, but has fared much better with placed efforts in his two subsequent starts. "He was unlucky first time out over fences this year at Carlisle where he fell at the fence at the bottom of the hill. They took it out at the next meeting as there was a lot of trouble at that fence," said the Cheshire handler. "He managed to sustain a cut to his face and had to have stitches, so then we just took him locally to Bangor to get him jumping and he's got a second and a third. "We think he's on a competitive mark. He's run well on soft, heavy ground before. Hopefully he will progress and have a chance. "He's 3lb lower now than what he was when he started out. He was 109 over hurdles and we always thought he'd be a better horse over fences. Hopefully he's starting to learn his game." War On has been placed in both his starts over fences on this track so far this season and trainer Chris Grant is looking for another decent show. "He's had two runs for us. We was third and then second there last time," said the County Durham handler. "He jumps well and he stays well. Hopefully he'll run all right. It's a handicap so he's running off his rightful mark. I'm hoping he'll run all right."

He won't mind the conditions. He has won a point-to-point in heavy ground and will go in pretty much everything. Because he hasn't won yet I've put cheekpieces on. He seems to travel through his races well and then finds one to beat him. He has schooled and worked in them and they seem to have sharpened him up a bit. He's probably better at three miles but on this ground it's going to be a test, and it will probably help him more than some of the others off a nice weight. Gavin is riding really well so I'd be hopeful of a big run.” " =============================================== It's been 282 days since Jimmy Quinn (Copperwood) rode a winner (50 rides) at Lingfield (A.W) Copperwood 11:50 Lingfield (AW) ============================================ 13:40 Saturday 4th January Racing Tips - 04/01/2014
Wincanton may well succumb to the weather and so Lingfield looks a safe place to get the early bets on. The 12 furlong handicap has a runner near the head of the market that looks underestimated in Modernstone. Her course and distance win last time gives her every right to be a clear favourite. Andrea Atzeni is back on and you'd think she will have the measure of Grendisar again, who is 3lb out of the handicap. Also out of the handicap is the likeable Presburg but I am wary of backing runners who have benefitted from Oisin Murphy's claim, surely the most profitable claim going. Modernstone will have to do a bit from stall 13 and Uramazin will have to do even more from widest of all. The good thing is that there are a few front runners drawn wide and with them being nudged along to hit the rail, a decent gallop should ensue. Kiama Bay is also likely to go forward from 1 so hopefully this will be a test and Uramazin will need that. He has developed a good relationship with Jim Crowley and the form of his Listed 2nd to the impressive Prince Alzain in a very good time gives him hope off a mark of 99. He should appreciate the step up in trip and is worth support at 11/1. Lingfield 14.35 - Uramazin 1pt e/w
The feature contest over 6 furlongs has a runner that was put up here and ended up very unlucky at a big price last time. Picansort is shorter today at 12/1 and new headgear is tried but he showed last time over 5 furlongs hat he can keep this sort of company. The race was completed in a good time and won by a progressive sort on Forest Edge. He has won over course and distance and will want a strong pace, which seems likely, especially given his draw. However, the basis of his selection last time was down to the trip and his 5 furlong times are invariably quicker than his 6 furlong and I'm not convinced by new headgear today. He therefore just misses out to top-weight Whaileyy who was 2nd in this race last year off the same mark. He has been out of sorts on turf since but his aw record is far better and he has gone well after a break before. I think 10/1 is generous and the race should be run to suit, plus the yard has had a great last 12 months on polytrack. The other I'd back is Noble Deed who made a good debut over a furlong too far here last time. Liam Jones gets on very well with him and competition for the lead will not inconvenience as he looks to want every bit of this trip. Lingfield 15.10 - Whaileyy 1pt e/w
Last up at Lingfield sees the very likeable Naaz return to a mile and I think he should be favourite for this. Currently around the 5/1 mark, he is in the capable hands of Adam Kirby and the addition of blinkers, with which he has twice been successful, is a big plus. The worry is that he may not get quite the pace he needs to win this from the back. It will not be run at a dawdle but neither is a fierce pace likely and I hope it doesn't happen too late for him over this sharp mile. The one I think it is worth siding with at the prices is The Great Gabrial at 8/1 who has 100% record at the track, 2 of which have come over course and distance. He will suit racing prominently off a decent gallop and 7 furlongs at Southwell just didn't suit him last time. His dam was a Yorkshire Oaks winner an he looks to want a mile minimum but does have a good turn of foot. He'll need a career best to take this on 2nd start for Alan McCabe but he looks progressive and the time he recorded on penultimate start should put him bang up there this afternoon. Lingfield 15.45 - The Great Gabrial 1pt e/w
One from Newcastle comes in the form of Rolecarr who, like a few on the card, should appreciate a return to testing ground. He would be a clear favourite if this was Kelso but he has gone well here over hurdles and there's no reason to feel the track is in any way a negative. 4lb lower than for his last win, he has been successful with today's claimer on top in the past and the yard are just starting to pick up having saddled a first winer this term 2 weeks ago. There are a few vying for that top of the market spot but 11/2 about this 11 year old seems a solid option. War On is of interest on handicap debut but I fancy that mark could be a touch high and if he and Etxalar ensure a true test it could play into the hands of the selection. The other of interest with bundles of stamina is Gwladys Street and this track may suit more than the sharper Bangor. He will get a good test but may still want further than 3 miles and he's not quite big enough in the market to get the nod. Newcastle 13.40 - Rolecarr 1pt e/w

SATURDAY'S meeting at Wincanton has been abandoned after the track failed a 7am inspection. ========================================= Fontwell to inspect at 8am on Sunday Fontwell's meeting on Thursday is at risk due to the weather, with the going currently heavy and the track waterlogged. It appears security staff approached Donohoe in the racecourse stables in what was described as "an ongoing integrity issue involving Mr Donohoe and the horse Star Links" by stipendiary steward Greg Pearson.
The incident concerns rule 48.1.7, which states that the BHA may conduct a search of any person present on licensed premises and take samples or custody of any article or material found on such persons.
Pearson said: "We requested Mr Donohoe to come to the stewards' room so that a search could be carried out. He refused to give the stewards permission to search him and therefore the horse was withdrawn by order of the stewards for him failing to comply with the rule.
"Therefore a report on the matter will be forwarded to the BHA."
When asked if the stewards were acting on a tip-off regarding the matter, Pearson declined to comment.
Star Links has raced at Wolverhampton twice in the last two months, winning in November and finishing fifth last month. ================================================= Lingfield offer Sandown badge holders free entry Lingfield are offering free entry for all Sandown metal badge holders after Saturday's Tolworth Hurdle card was cancelled. * This is a 3yo maiden over 10f * There are 47 of these races at this time of year * JOYFUL FRIEND comes from a 7f maiden * 2 Winners did that but they had 9 and 10 runs * JOYFUL FRIEND has only raced once * None of the 47 winners were like him * He could easily win and not a negative * I just have better profiles so will leave him alone * Several winners came from 8f 2yo maidens * COSQUILLAS is a filly with 1 run doing this * Similar horses had a 2-30 record both had long absences * Those that ran within 40 days like her were 0-17 * COSQUILLAS wouldn't be my first choice * DARK TSARINA - Unraced filly not for me * LIL ROCKERFELLER - Nothing wrong with his profile * Could win but I'd rather have 2 runs than one * TOWER POWER - No reason why he can't win * Friendless in market which raises questions * One being whether he is here for a handicap mark
Shortlist
* I looked at horses from 2yo maidens over 8f * Horses doing this with 2 Career starts in the past 4 weeks * There was a 4-34 record a good solid profile * ARTFUL ROGUE has this profile and is a positive * TIMELESS WAR also has this positive profile * I think one of these should be the selection * There could be room to save on the other * Others may prefer an each way bet * ARTFUL ROGUE just gets the verdict

This is division 2 of the 10f maiden run at 12.20 with the same angles. It's complicated because of the unraced SWIVEL from the stable that won this in 2011 with an unraced horse. HABDAB is a filly and none of those won with either 6 or more starts or from a Nursery so she isn't like a winner. ALFAAYZA is another filly and she was beaten a long way last time. If I look at fillies that had just been beaten 10 or more lengths last time out the ones with 2 or more runs were 0-32 and that has put me off ALFAAYZA who has an unsafe profile. THIRD STRIKE has an chance if tuned up. So to does FRACTAL but the fear with him could well be that he is here for a handicap mark. I would see ANGLO IRISH as the safest all round profile.

Shortlist
* SHAOLIN is 4 and has a long absence * I couldn't rule him out but his profile is just average * I don't see enough reasons to select him * He smells fancied and has been touted up in places
* PERFECT MISSION is hard to read * Not convinced he has had enough racing * Exposed 6yo and no runs within a month * Just 2 runs in about 4 and a half months * Throw in topweight and a poor last run * On the positive side he has won when fresh before * He also has a good trainer and draw * LUCKY DI is a 4yo filly from a 7f handicap * She has 15 + runs and last ran 2-3 weeks ago * Horses with this profile were 2-12 * It's a profile I can work with but there are reservations * Neither winner came from a 3yo handicap like her * She will also need luck in running as well * Her stable are quiet winless since last September

* Draw results show Stall 12 rarely wins * DIAMOND CHARLIE has that poor draw * Without a recent run he didn't offer me enough * CAPONE is 9 and has 1 run since Last May * He won't be fit enough to win in my view * The longest winner was 76 days * The only winners from 5f races were 5 year olds * PICANSORT is 7 doing this and rejected * He's never won in this class or off this rating before * NAABEGHA won a claimer last time * Hardly the right preparation for a Class 2 handicap * He's also having his first run for a new stable today * NAABEGHA is 0-16 racing in Class 3 or higher * He's unplaced all 5 times he ran in this class before * NAABEGHA does not make enough appeal * DOCTOR PARKES - I don't want an 8yo up in trip * Not when lacking a recent run and any course form * NOBLE DEED wouldn't be my first choice * Not with just 1 run in the last 143 days * ELUSIVITY - Not for me absent 91 days and no track form * KYLLACHY RISE has too much to prove
Shortlist
* WHAILEYY is off 209 days and looks badly treated * I do like the fact he is rated 102 taking on a 0-94 * He is 8lbs higher than every other horse * That suggests to me a class edge * Two problems for me against him * I looked at every Class 2 handicap in January * There are 60 of these races at every distance * I looked at 4 year old winners with 9 or more runs * All winners ran within 27 days and he's absent 209 days * His trainer also says he will need the run * That could be misleading and not to be trusted * But I can't make a statistical case for him either * WHAILEYY is therefore not my selection
* PERFECT PASTURE won a 5f race last time * Not the sort of profile that would inspire me * His 52 day absence may not be much help either * He has no form on the track or in this class before * The only likeable factor is he is unexposed * 5 wins in a row and now trying for 6 after 52 days off * I think that's quite ambitious and I see flaws in him
* RIVELLINO won well last time out * He is up in trip and up in grade today * He is unexposed though and could improve * I think he has to be the most likely winner
Selection
RIVELLINO 3/1

7/2 Scottish Glen, 11/2 Canadian Run, 11/2 Naaz 13/2 Indian Jack, 13/2 Ishikawa, 8/1 Soaring Spirits 8/1 The Great Gabrial, 12/1 Camachoice 14/1 Ancient Greece, 14/1 My Kingdom.
* This is a Mile handicap for 0-84 rated horses * There are 144 similar races in January * I don't see a strong draw advantage * INDIAN JACK has raced just twice since 2012 * I wanted more runs for a 6yo with topweight * CAMACHOICE is 4 absent 220 days * He comes from a 3yo handicap * I found 1 winners aged 4 with long breaks doing this * That horse (Harald Bluetooth) only had 4 run * CAMACHOICE has 7 runs and isn't a perfect match * ANCIENT GREECE is 7 and absent 146 days * He has a longer absence than any winners his age * Have to see him as an unlikely winner * THE GREAT GABRIAL is 5 and up in distance * Horses aged 5 doing this have a 4-90 record * Males aged 5 doing this absent 9+ days are 1-60 * It's not a very alluring profile * His best win came off 73 in a Class 5 * Today he has to race off 79 in a Class 5 * THE GREAT GABRIAL is going to need a career best * SOARING SPIRITS is 4 and from an 8f handicap * Last run 3-4 weeks ago and has 13 career starts * There was a winner with 15 runs otherwise like him * SOARING SPIRITS has some sort of chance * Not sure there will be any improvement though * He downgraded stables two runs ago
* SCOTTISH GLEN is 8 and won a handicap last time out * The only 8yo winners following up ran within 20 days * SCOTTISH GLEN is absent 26 days * It's hardly a statistic that could make him a negative * Just a bit uncomfortable about landing his hat trick * Given he is 8 and hasn't got that recent run
* CANADIAN RUN is 4 absent 106 days * There are 6 winners aged 4 with long absences * They all had less weight than him * None of them won last time out * Just makes him a little unsafe and unlike a winner
* NAAZ is 4 and drops down from 10f * There were 5 winning 4 year olds doing that * They had absences of 15 12 18 23 13 days * NAAZ is absent 26 days which is just about fine * I'd have liked a more recent run but he's respected * NAAZ is down in class which will help
* MY KINGDOM is 8 and up in distance * There was one winner with a similar profile * MY KINGDOM has ran 8 times over 7.5f or more * He finished unplaced on all 8 occasions * His profile is fine just not sure about the trip * May be best to consider him in a place bet
* ISHIKAWA is 6 and drops down from 10f * He is Male and runs within the past month * Horses with this profile have a 2-15 record * ISHIKAWA has a decent profile * He will need a career best though * He is yet to win in this class or off his rating * That said he has the best profile in the race
* I think this is the hardest race of the day * I would favour a split stake bet here
Selection
ISHIKAWA 8/1 Win Bet
MY KINGDOM 3/1 Place Bet

Group Three winner Lily's Angel has been retired from racing. Lily's Angel: Retired to stud The five-year-old was a Listed winner as a juvenile when trained by Richard Fahey and transferred to the care of Irish trainer Ger Lyons midway through her three-year-old campaign. Lily's Angel then racked up three wins in Ireland for Lyons before adding a victory in Dubai last January. She won the Chartwell Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield last May before going on to record a string of excellent placed efforts, including second in the Group One Matron Stakes. Lyons tweeted: "The Mitchell Family & I have decided to retire Lily's Angel to stud. She has been brilliant on the track & we wish her a happy retirement."

A round-up of the latest weather news from tracks set to race in the days ahead. Officials at Plumpton will stage a further inspection at 7am ahead of the track's high-profile fixture on Sunday. The West Sussex venue is due to stage a seven-race card featuring the At The Races Sussex National and clerk of the course Mark Cornford is keen to give the meeting every chance. He said: "We are raceable, only just raceable, but raceable nonetheless, so we have to look again in the morning. "There has not been any rain since daylight this morning and it's a blustery day, so it could improve. "Most forecasts I've looked at are saying after midday today, we're hardly going to get any rain at all until after racing starts. If that is the case, then we have a chance. "We are right on the brink and we couldn't handle any significant rainfall, but we're an independent track, it's a big day and we want to give it as much time as we can." Monday's meeting at Taunton has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track. Clerk of the course Jason Loosemore called an inspection for 11am this morning, but after further rain overnight, decided there was no point in delaying the inevitable and called off the fixture. Loosemore said: "We've had 17 millimetres of rain since Friday morning, the track is waterlogged and we have false ground at varying points. "While it is due to be dry for most of today, it is dull and overcast and it is not going to improve sufficiently for racing to go ahead. Adding to that, there is more rain forecast from midday on Sunday. "It is disappointing, but it is the right call." The jumps fixture at Chepstow on Tuesday must also survive a 9am course inspection on Sunday morning. With the going heavy, waterlogged in places, further heavy showers at the Monmouthshire track have been forecast this weekend. Officials at Fontwell will stage an 8am inspection on Sunday ahead of the track's National Hunt fixture next Thursday. The West Sussex circuit is currently described as heavy, waterlogged in places after further rain in the last 24 hours took the tally to 10.2 inches since December 14. Although the meeting is still five days away, clerk of the course Edward Arkell has decided to check on conditions early. Arkell said: "We have areas of standing water and patches of false ground, so we're not very optimistic, to be honest. We've had a phenomenal amount of rain in the last 20 days and there is more rain forecast for later today. "We are due a dry spell on Sunday, but then there is more rain coming in Sunday night into Monday. The forecast after that is uncertain, but it is probably going to be wet right up until Thursday." Ludlow's meeting on Wednesday is under threat from the exceptionally wet weather with an inspection called for 8.30 on Tuesday morning. The course is currently heavy, waterlogged in places, and there is some standing water on the golf club bend. The Shropshire track was hit with 96 millimetres of rain from December 18 to January 1 and has had a further 33mm since then. The forecast is for heavy rain at times on Sunday and Monday with cloudy conditions coming in from Tuesday morning and sunny intervals on race day itself.

Martin Dwyer is recovering at home following a horrible fall at Southwell on Friday. Martin Dwyer: Recovering at home The 2006 Derby-winning jockey was dramatically unseated from Columbian Roulette when looking to have the opening 32Red Handicap at his mercy and received immediate attention on the track before being taken to hospital. Dwyer was unconscious for six minutes, but had regained consciousness before going to hospital, being accompanied by the racecourse doctor. Dwyer was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and after a head scan came back clear, he was allowed to go home on Friday evening, a scenario did not look likely earlier in the day. The jockey's agent, Simon Dodds, said: "He was allowed to go home last night, which is positive news as the doctors would not have let him home the same day unless they were completely happy with him. "Having been unconscious, he will have to have a mandatory period out of action now, but overall you would have to say it is a good result. "In some respects Martin is lucky it happened at Southwell, as the Queen's Medical Centre is one of the best places in the country when it comes to neurological assessment. "His neck is a bit sore, as you would imagine, but hopefully he'll be back on the track before too long."

Lingfield Park, 4 January 2014
12.20, second race
The Starter reported that LIL ROCKERFELLER (USA), trained by Richard Hannon, refused to enter the stalls. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and he was informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
12.50, third race
The Stewards noted that ANGLO IRISH, placed second, had interfered with the winner, FRACTAL, in the closing stages, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
1.25, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the first bend. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that SHIFTING STAR (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Sean Levey, had interfered with THE DANCING LORD, unplaced, ridden by Daniel Cremin, which in turn interfered with PERFECT MISSION, unplaced, ridden by Jack Garritty, which in turn interfered with VALDAW, unplaced, ridden by Andrea Atzeni. The Stewards found Levey in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to drift left. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 January 2014.
2.35, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of GRENDISAR (IRE), ridden by Paolo Sirigu and trained by Marco Botti, which appeared to be tenderly handled from entering the home straight to finish fourth, beaten 1½ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop the gelding out, as he is a tricky ride, and to finish as close as he could. However, he felt that he had delayed his challenge for too long and could have finished in third place. The trainer stated that in his opinion his jockey asked for his effort too late. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (B)59.4 and guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. They suspended him for 10 days as follows: Saturday 18, Sunday 19, Monday 20, Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22, Thursday 23, Friday 24, Saturday 25, Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 January 2014.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jamie Spencer, the rider of the winner, CASTILO DEL DIABLO (IRE), inside the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip without time to respond. The Stewards suspended Spencer for 3 days as follows: Saturday 18, Sunday 19 and Monday 20 January 2014.
04/01/2014
Newcastle, 4 January 2014
12.00, first race
The Stewards noted that the winner, RETRIEVE THE STICK, had interfered with NOSEY BOX (IRE), placed second, after the second last hurdle, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved RETRIEVE THE STICK’s placing.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference after the final hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, RETRIEVE THE STICK, ridden by Brian Hughes, had interfered with NOSEY BOX (IRE), placed second, ridden by Derek Fox. They found the interference was accidental.
3.25, seventh race
Due to the ground condition the Stewards gave permission for the runners to by-pass the site of hurdle four.
04/01/2014 ================================================
Lingfield Park, 4 January 2014
1.25, fourth race
Adam Kirby, the rider of THE MONGOOSE, unplaced, reported that the gelding moved poorly in the closing stages.
2.00, fifth race
Adam Kirby, the rider of ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (AUS), unplaced, reported that the gelding was denied a clear run on the home turn.
04/01/2014
Newcastle, 4 January 2014
1.05, third race
The Veterinary Officer reported that SHOOTING TIMES, unplaced, trained by Lucinda Russell, had bled from the nose.
1.40, fourth race
The Stewards considered the running of ETXALAR (FR) ridden by Peter Buchanan and trained by Lucinda Russell, which was pulled up. The Stewards noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding was unsuited by the ground, (heavy, soft in places), and which in her opinion was too tacky for the gelding. They ordered ETXALAR (FR) to be routine tested.
