13:15 Saturday 28th December Racing Tips - 28/12/2013
The Welsh National takes centre stage today and it's been a while since I've been through a card and shortlisted more than half of the field. It is very open to say the least. Tidal Bay should win because racing is romantic but he is surely up against it under top-weight and I do like to side with a youngster in this. Only 1 horse older than 8 has won the race in the last 10 years and that was Bindaree, who was 9. Knock A Hand has every chance in ideal conditions, Hawkes Point is from a yard that knows how to win this and he goes well here but, of those in the middle of the weights, Vintage Star has a very likeable profile at 14/1. The yard is in super form and it is this runner's form behind stable companion Cloudy Too that takes the eye. That runner is worthy of a mark into the mid 140's and Vintage Star can exploit a mark of 137. That's the same mark that saw him just held on good ground at Newcastle behind Hey Big Spender last time but the ground today and this new trip should see him that little bit more at home. His jumping let him down in the RSA but he has been better since and looks a dour stayer. Goonyella is of great interest for the yard that won this a few years ago. He will stay all day and I'm not quite sure why I'm not tipping it! Well Refreshed just misses out, mainly because I'm in love with Merry King and, having put him up for his 2 previous starts, if he won today and I hadn't, I'd probably cry. He is a Welsh National sort. Progressive, young, tough stayer that was just found out for pace last time in the Hennessy on good ground and the yard has won this with Synchronised back in 2011. He certainly wants a proper test and will get it today, I just hope it doesn't come a little quickly for him after 2 tough races this term but he's a decent proposition at 11/1. Chepstow 14.35 - Merry King 1pt e/w Chepstow 14.35 - Vintage Star 1pt e/w
I fancy Rule The World could be better than he showed last time out but the performance was a worry. It could be put down to the ground and softer is better for him but such a severe injury is not easy to recover from fully and Solwhit will be very tough to beat. Willie Mullins is, miraculously, yet to win the Lexus Chase and sends out a very strong team today. There are questions to answer for a few of these near the top of the betting and Mullins could send out something of a surprise in Rubi Ball. He's an out and out French stayer and should be better than we saw on debut when beaten at 1/2 by Foildubh over hurdles. He won 2 Grade 1's over in France and is still only an 8 year old, though he did start his chasing career at 3. 14/1 is of interest for a team not apparently flying but still sending out a few decent priced winners. I can't back Bobs Worth or First Lieutenant after poor shows last time and think the former wants even more of a test. Unioniste is interesting but he is so young and this is some step up to make 9/2 a scarily short price. I fancy Sir Des Champs for the Gold Cup but worry about him on soft ground and he had a crashing fall last time. The other one to side with could be RSA winner Lord Windermere who had excuses at Newbury and should appreciate softer ground, though that RSA was perhaps on the weak side. Leopardstown 14.55 - Rubi Ball 1pt e/w
The ground at Newbury is likely to be testing but hopefully will get away with being no worse than soft. That will be ok for Faultless Feelings who should be worth another chance at 7/1 for the stamina sapper over 3 miles 2 and a half furlongs. He was not travelling before being pulled up last time out but, on the form of his run at Uttoxeter in September, should still be leniently treated over fences. He was staying on over 2 furlongs shorter on penultimate start and has gone well here before. Yard form is good and soft ground should be no worry on breeding, nor should the trip. Restless Harry will be a danger if back on song over fences but he will have to stay as there are likely to be a couple taking them along. Most likely winner is Denali Highway who looks to want this far and is still relatively unexposed but a risky proposition at such a short price. Newbury 13.15 - Faultless Feelings 1pt e/w
The penultimate race at Chepstow is very open but one horse in particular stands out at the prices. I think Coverholder should be a clear favourite for this and is worth snapping up at 7/1 for the yard that will have hopefully won the Welsh National. He is a progressive sort over fences and has risen a monster 24lb in just 2 races but the way he has won both of those starts suggests this is not beyond him. He won 5 in a row last term over hurdles, 3 on soft and 2 on heavy suggesting that today's ground should be no problem. His last 2 wins have come on better but he drops back in trip from last time and should handle that given the conditions. I'd like to see Mail De Bievre go well but he has a lot more to prove than the selection at a similar price. Selections at a bigger price would be either Simply Wings or Frontier Spirit but they don't look all that progressive and chances would be limited to place claims at best. Chepstow 15.10 - Coverholder 1pt e/w

Trainer Shark Hanlon plans to appeal against the result of the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown after Hidden Cyclone was narrowly denied by Benefficient. Benefficient and Hidden Cyclone fought out a tight finish The two fought out a tremendous finish to the Grade One feature, along with favourite Arvika Ligeonniere, with Benefficient appearing to hamper Hidden Cyclone in the closing stages. The Leopardstown stewards deliberated over the result, but ruled the placings should remain unaltered. Hanlon feels it was the wrong call. He said: "I'm very disappointed, to be honest. I thought we'd get it in the stewards' room. "It took them half an hour to make up their minds and, in my opinion, we should have been awarded the race. "He's been beaten three-quarters of a length and I think when you have to go around another horse like that, it costs you two lengths. "I've no doubt if the two horses had run straight to the line our horse would have been in front and a lot of people in Leopardstown agreed with me. "We're definitely going to appeal and it's a shame it ended like that as it was a super run from the horse. "I think two miles or two and a quarter miles looks to be his best trip. Maybe he gets two and a half miles on better ground. "We'll look at Cheltenham in March, maybe with one run between now and then."

Paul Nicholls has yet to make plans for his King George VI winner and third Silviniaco Conti and Al Ferof. Plans remain fluid for Silviniaco Conti after his Kempton win Silviniaco Conti outstayed Cue Card over the final two fences to win his second Grade One Chase, while Al Ferof appeared to find the three-mile trip beyond him in testing conditions. Nicholls told Racing UK: "You wouldn't know Silviniaco Conti had had a race, although you could tell Al Ferof has. In that ground three miles wasn't ideal for him. "I haven't talked to Chris (Giles) and Jared (Sullivan, owners) about what's next for Silviniaco. "The only possible one is the Denman Chase (at Newbury, February 8) that we used for Kauto and Denman but he doesn't need to run before the Gold Cup. "I need to talk to John (Hales) and make a plan with Al Ferof. "I suspect neither of them will be running in January

Tony Martin remains unsure whether Flemenstar will return to action this season as he continues to recover from injury. Flemenstar: Future uncertain The brilliant chaser made a winning debut for the trainer in the Fortria Chase at Navan in early November, but was a late withdrawal from the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase after suffering a knock to a leg. Martin said: "It's fingers crossed at the moment. The horse is in good hands with the vets and hopefully they'll get him right. "It's too early to say whether he'll run again this season."

Lingfield Park, 28 December 2013
12.40, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why CATARIA GIRL (USA), trained by Marcus Tregoning, entered the paddock with the incorrect number cloth. Having heard his evidence they found him in breach of Rule (C)43.3.1 and fined him £140.
The Stewards noted that ALDEBURGH, unplaced, had interfered with SECULAR SOCIETY, placed third, at the one furlong marker but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
The Stewards noted that the winner BIG BAZ (IRE), had interfered with SWEET MARWELL (IRE), placed fourth, inside the final furlong but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved BIG BAZ (IRE)’s placing.
1.10, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Martin Lane, the rider of BIRDMAN (IRE), at the start. They interviewed Lane. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the gelding ducking left on exiting the stalls. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved the Stewards took no further action.
2.10, sixth race
The Stewards noted that PALACE MOON, placed second, had interfered with the winner, ABSOLUTELY SO (IRE), who then interfered with KUANYAO (IRE), placed fourth, inside the final furlong but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
2.45, seventh race
The Stewards noted that PULL THE PIN (IRE) had interfered with DECISION BY ONE, who then interfered with ENDERBY SPIRIT (GR), who then interfered with JUNGLE BAY, all unplaced, turning into the home straight but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
3.20, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run to the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, PERFECT HAVEN, ridden by Adam Kirby, had interfered with WELSH SUNRISE, placed second, ridden by George Baker. The Stewards found Kirby in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift left. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2014.
28/12/2013
Newbury, 28 December 2013
2.50, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the second-last hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that STOPPED OUT, placed third, ridden by Richie McGrath, had interfered with the winner, WHISPER (FR), ridden by Andrew Tinkler. The Stewards found McGrath in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to shift right-handed without correction. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2014.
28/12/2013
Catterick Bridge, 28 December 2013
1.55, fourth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, NEWDANE DANCER (IRE), ridden by Colm McCormack and trained by Dianne Sayer, compared with its previous run at Musselburgh on 7 November 2013 where the mare finished seventh, beaten 54 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that NEWDANE DANCER (IRE) was better suited by the drop in class and the softer ground on this occasion. They ordered NEWDANE DANCER (IRE) to be routine tested.
3.00, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Harry Skelton, the rider of the winner, THE PANAMA KID (IRE), from the third last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Skelton for 2 days as follows: Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2014.
28/12/2013
Chepstow, 28 December 2013
2.35, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Paul Moloney, the rider of the winner, MOUNTAINOUS (IRE), from approaching the last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level and in an incorrect place. The Stewards suspended Moloney for 4 days as follows: Saturday 11, Sunday 12, Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 January 2014.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Daryl Jacob, the rider of TIDAL BAY (IRE), placed third, from approaching the last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Jacob for 2 days as follows: Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2014.

Sprinter Sacre has returned home to his own box at Nicky Henderson's yard after his heart problem "righted itself". Sprinter Sacre: Positive bulletin from trainer The seven-year-old was found to be suffering from an irregular heartbeat after being pulled up by Barry Geraghty on his seasonal return in Friday's Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton. Sprinter Sacre returned to Henderson's Seven Barrows base on Friday night but was sent to Newmarket for assessment by Celia Marr, a specialist in equine internal medicine and cardiology, on Saturday. Marr confirmed the original diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and decided to give the horse some time to see if his heartbeat regulated itself, which Henderson reports it has now done. He said on Sunday morning: "There's been quite a big turnaround since yesterday and it's all for the good. "Quite soon after I put out an update yesterday afternoon, I spoke to Celia and she told me he had done what we hoped he would do and the problem had righted itself and it has stayed that way overnight. "It's all correct this morning and we have sent a box to pick him up and he will be back home later today.

Trainer Charles Byrnes still hopes to get a run into Solwhit before the planned defence of his Ladbrokes World Hurdle title at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Charles Byrnes (left): Hopes to be flying the flag with Solwhit again in March The nine-year-old has been off the track since finishing second at Auteuil in June but had been due to make his reappearance at Leopardstown on Saturday. A late setback prevented him from taking his chance in the Christmas Hurdle, with Byrnes to reassess his condition later in the week. "He has bit of problem with a fetlock and we will see how he is at the end of the week, but I'm not too concerned at the moment," said the County Limerick-based handler. "I'd hope we will get a run into him before Cheltenham." Solwhit is Sky Bet's 5/1 second-favourite behind Big Buck's for the World Hurdle

This race seemed like an ideal opportunity for him and he seems in good form at home. It is not that long since his race at Aintree so that would be a bit of a worry at the back of our minds but he is working well and deserves to take his chance. The last time he was at Haydock he won so a hunter chase with Willy so that will help but that was a while ago now and It was a weaker field to this.” " Baby Run 12:50 Haydock ==============================================

13:30 Monday 30th December Racing Tips - 30/12/2013
The feature handicap at Lingfield this afternoon is likely to be run at a fierce pace and I fancy the favourite is worth taking on at 7/4. He is highly progressive but this is tougher and it's not like the rest of these are heading the other way. We have a few last time out winners and pick of the bunch looks to be Rakaan (who has been a horrible drifter on the machine overnight, beware). On his side is stamina given that he won over 10 furlongs here last time. That race was steadily run, which helped his cause, but he's won over 9 furlongs and the running of this should suit. He seems to be better without cheekpieces (has won his last 2 races with them left off) and is still on a mark he has been successful from before. The yard chucked in a 14/1 winner here the other day and I fancy him to go close at 10/1. Also of interest is Favourite Treat but I worry about him drawn wide and attempting to make all with some others here that like to do just that. He wants a steady gallop at this trip but is well treated and worth keeping an eye on. Lingfield 13.30 - Rakaan 1pt e/w
The rain is going to cause sodden ground everywhere over the next few weeks and it starts at Haydock tomorrow. That should help Baby Mix but don't rule out Charingworth. If Baby Mix does win then the Twiston-Davies' could be on for a double. Hunters Lodge is not the most efficient of jumpers but I think juicy ground will help him as it may mean they don't go so quick and he's a nice price at 10/1. He is likely to have a bit of competition for the lead but that is no bad thing as he looks an out and out stayer, devoid of pace. Plenty in his pedigree have handled heavy and, though his last win came on good, he has won on bottomless ground and I still think he can win off 4lb higher than his last success. There are plenty that like to go forward here but the way he finished over further at Sandown last time, after some modest jumping, suggests a real test is what he needs. Haydock 13.55 - Hunters Lodge 1pt e/w

Dual Cheltenham Festival winner Monsignor - latterly an equine ambassador for ex-racehorse charity Homing Ex-Racehorses Organisation Scheme (HEROS) - has died aged 19. Monsignor: Has died at age 19 The chestnut gelding was put down on Friday after injuring his left fore in the field at home at North Farm Stud in Oxfordshire. Earlier in the year he'd damaged the tendon in the same leg and HEROS decided that the injury was too severe to put him through any more treatment and box rest. Monsignor won eight of his 10 career starts with victories including a defeat of Best Mate in the Grade One Tolworth Hurdle as well as the 1999 Champion Bumper and the Royal and Sun Alliance Novice Hurdle, which he took in record time, at the following year's Cheltenham Festival. Comebacks were often mooted but he never returned to the track after that victory and was retired due to a tendon injury and was gifted to HEROS by owner Malcolm Denmark in 2006. In his retirement he was an equine ambassador for the charity - going out to racecourses in "Meet the Racehorse" sessions and parading at Lambourn and Epsom open days. Last year he was asked to carry the Olympic Torch and Frankie Dettori around the parade ring at Ascot. "I have known him for what seems like forever and he will leave a huge gap in our lives," Grace Muir of HEROS told www.horseandhound.co.uk. "He was a great character, a kind and gentle giant who nevertheless had a great zest for life. A huge thank you to Monsignor for all he has done for HEROS and we will always treasure the times we had with him".

Dessie Hughes is expecting an improved display from Our Conor in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle after being encouraged by his comeback run at Leopardstown on Sunday. Our Conor: Expected to improve for the outing Last season's brilliant Triumph Hurdle winner was third behind Hurricane Fly and Jezki in the Ryanair Hurdle on his return from injury and is set to head back to the Dublin track on January 26, when he could renew rivalries with his old adversaries. "He's fine. I was happy enough he got so close. He jumped the last upsides," said Hughes. "He didn't have the finest preparation in the world after he got hurt at Naas and was laid up for three weeks to a month. "You could call it his first run - Naas was a waste of time - so it was a gutsy performance. "He'll come on for that. He came on a lot from Leopardstown (Spring Juvenile Hurdle success in February) to Cheltenham last year. It's the Irish Champion next time and he'll be ready for it."

Trainer Dan Skelton will resist the urge to run Willow's Saviour in the 32Red Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday. Willow's Saviour: Will wait for Newbury The Warwickshire-based handler had been considering the in-form six-year-old for the Grade One at the Esher circuit, but he will instead be preserved for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury on February 8. Skelton tweeted: "Going to give the Tolworth a miss with Willow's Saviour. Straight to Betfair Hurdle at Newbury as fresh as possible." Willow's Saviour has been in excellent form this term, and rattled off a hat-trick with a four-length triumph in the valuable Ladbroke handicap hurdle at Ascot on December 21.

DAILY MAIL. KAKATOSI (Lingfield, nap, 2.30) was unlucky in the run last time and could be worth backing to gain compensation on Tuesday afternoon.
The selection finished strongly from off the pace behind Novellen Lad after a sluggish start and his course figures now read 1515 with the two defeats coming by just a length and two lengths.
The handicapper dropped the gelding for the defeat which was unexpected and, with some luck in running and a strong gallop to aim at, he should make an impact at the business end. King Of Wands ridden by William Buick going to post for the Coral Marathon at Sandown Racecourse
NEVER A QUARREL (Lingfield, nb, 3.30) has only raced eight times in her life so it’s fair to assume she is capable of further improvement.
The Acclamation filly was only narrowly overhauled over course and distance before Christmas in a very strongly-run affair and Tuesday’s race doesn’t look any better.
AQUA GARDENS (Lingfield, 1.30) has been given an easy time of it since running a blinder behind the well-handicapped Eurystheus at Wolverhampton last time.
A couple of entries have been allowed to slide by connections since their five-year-old’s fine effort before Christmas and a mile at Lingfield looks to be the son of Nayef’s optimum conditions.

13:45 Tuesday 31st December Racing Tips - 31/12/2013
The relative safety of the all weather has been a bit of a downer this month but, as the national hunt ground turns heavy, it's still worth paying close attention to. Lingfield has another competitive handicap in the middle of the card and, as ever, there is one at either end of the market I want to side with. Nassau Storm drops in class from when a staying on favourite last time having met trouble in running over course and distance, but he is the obvious choice. The fact that he was 7/4 for a tougher assignment means that 3/1 today looks generous. That doesn't mean that stable companion Oblitereight is without hope on his return to the all weather and he lines up off a handy mark. Kakatosi is another obvious choice at 9/2 given a staying on effort over 6 furlongs here last time but that form flags up another runner at a bigger price. Both Kakatosi and the 4 year old Intomist were beaten 2 and a quarter lengths last time but the latter's looks a better race and was completed in a quicker time. Intomist returns off the same mark whilst Kakatosi is eased 1lb but William Carson's mount came from way back and was showing such good work late on that he is worth noting back up in trip. He is a course and distance winner and has formed a good looking partnership with William Carson, lining up today at 22/1. Lingfield 14.30 - Intomist 1pt e/w
I'm never worried about taking on Boston Bob who is yet to really live up to expectation. He should win at Punchestown today in perhaps the easiest race he has found himself in and those jumping inconsistencies are unlikely to be such an issue back over hurdles. However, there is a chance this could happen just a bit quickly for him and he is unsuccessful in 2 attempts at the track (he is yet to win right-handed but that could just be coincidence) . I'm surprised Mourad is as big as 7/2, or perhaps surprised the former is so short. Not seen for over 6 months, Mourad is 3 from 4 with Paul Townend on top and will appreciate today's conditions over 2 and a half miles. He is a 3 mile Grade 2 hurdle winner on heavy and there's also the chance this will not be a sufficient test but the two at the top of the card should take them along. A course and distance winner of 3 years ago, he can end a losing streak that stretches back nearly a year. Punchestown 13.45 - Mourad 1pt win

Timmy Murphy makes his return to the saddle with a reunion with an old friend at Musselburgh. Ifandbutwhynot gets over the last under Murphy at Newbury The 39-year-old will be back aboard Ifandbutwhynot, who he gave a fine front-running ride to win the bet365 Intermediate Hurdle at Newbury on the horse's most recent start. David O'Meara's gelding is turned out again in the totepool Mobile Hogmaneigh Hurdle. The last horse Murphy rode in public, Upsilon Bleu, is also in action at the Scottish track but he has deserted him for Viva Colonia in the totepool.com Scottish Premier Chase. Murphy had been aboard the gelding at the Newbury Hennessy meeting when riding against Dominic Elsworth on Easter Meteor. The jockeys clashed afterwards, leading to Murphy suffering a dislocated shoulder. Murphy admitted responsibilty for the incident and was banned for nine days by the British Horseracing Authority. Murphy has three other mounts, starting with the Donald McCain-trained Divers in the totequadpot Four Places In Four Races Handicap Hurdle.

David Pipe expects to learn a lot more about The Liquidator's ultimate spring prospects after Saturday's 32Red Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown. The Liquidator: Lines up at Sandown Some fascinating runners have been entered in the Grade One, with a Willie Mullins quartet of Champion Bumper winner Briar Hill, Gitane Du Berlais, Upazo and Vautour potentially in the line-up. Other promising novices like Nicky Henderson's Josses Hill, Philip Hobbs' prolific The Skyfarmer, unbeaten jumper and classy Flat performer Mijhaar and Paul Nicholls' slick German recruit Irving are also in the mix. The Liquidator has done little wrong himself, finishing fourth in the Champion Bumper, winning at Punchestown and taking his two hurdles at Carlisle and Cheltenham in good style. "At the weekend, the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown looks like being a real humdinger," the trainer told www.davidpipe.com. "The stable has Grade One winner The Liquidator, who is unbeaten in two starts over timber. "The race should certainly provide a few clues to the novices' events for the Festival in March." The Liquidator is one of the 12/1 co-favourites with the sponsors for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham in March. reopens Mullins has suggested Briar Hill could be the least likely starter of his quartet. He said: "I just stuck those horses in the Tolworth and I don't know what we're going to do yet. Briar Hill may run at Naas on Sunday in the Slaney Hurdle."

Ian Williams, trainer: BALLYALTON " “I decided on Cheltenham because the ground won't be as soft as it will be at Sandown, and it's also a good opportunity to get some more experience of the course into him. It will be a good test, having to give weight away, but I feel it's the right race in terms of his development and experience.” " Ballyalton 12:10 Cheltenham =====================================================

12:45 Wednesday 1st January Racing Tips - 01/01/2014
If Bradley wins at Cheltenham I'll be a little annoyed having put him up at Sandown for a poor run last time. Blinkers are tried an I just worry he is better on better ground and that his effort here on penultimate start wasn't quite as convincing as it first appeared. I'm tempted at a price by Pigeon Island but again he will not want too much rain. Restless Harry is of interest after unseating (not his fault) last time and the rain will not hinder his chances. This trip should really suit and he has dropped to a lenient mark for all that this is a tougher race. The one I really like is Alfie Spinner at 13/2 who has the help of A P McCoy for the first time. The yard are in good recent form and their charge will relish testing conditions over 3 furlongs shorter than he faced last time. Placed in a Graded handicap off 12lb higher, he will want to ensure a stern test but has looked back in form of late as front running tactics have been reintroduced. I've backed a few recently that have been doing their best work late on and hope he gets going at the right time before it's to late. Cheltenham 12.45 - Alfie Spinner 1pt e/w
Interesting that Timmy Murphy is on Viva Colonia as opposed to Upsilon Bleu tomorrow, his mount at Newbury that led to the weighing room controversy. Viva Colonia is a worthy favourite at 3/1, dropping dramatically in class from his first few outings this term. His most interesting bit of form came over course and distance off level weights with the progressive Sydney Paget when scoring by 10 lengths. He has not quite lived up to his promise since but is on a handy mark. I'm just worried for him if there is anymore rain. The other worth noting is Kealigolane who is 3lb below his highest chase mark and up 5lb for a win last time out. That came here over 3 miles and a drop in trip on this surface shouldn't hinder his progression. The only concern is whether he has improvement in him as a 10 year old but he likes it here and 8/1 looks worth taking if continuing the improvement he has made since fitted with a hood. Musselburgh 13.35 - Kealigolane 1pt e/w
Cheltenham's 3 mile handicap hurdle looks a little like a hurdle for chasers who have lost their way. Starting with the actual hurdlers, Whispering Gallery is an obvious choice at 7/2 given how well his form has worked out since transferring to the National Hunt game. He could be chucked in off 144 but it can be expensive to support these types of horses as there is often more hype than value and Cheltenham on testing ground over 3 miles for the first time is quite a test. Grand Vision is a threat if resuming from the form of his Albert Bartlett 3rd 2 seasons ago but that is taken very much on trust. I'm a big fan of the progressive Return Spring and he looks the likely winner over this trip on testing ground. Astigos is an interesting one on debut for Venetia Williams and Aiden Coleman seemingly opts for him over Quartz De Thaix but Liam Treadwell is well worth noting on top of this yard's runners. He is well handicapped off the same mark as his last hurdles win 3 years ago. A heavy ground winner, conditions will suit and hurdles may ignite that spark which has been lacking of late. You have to think his fall here in January has done his confidence no good and first time blinkers over smaller obstacles will hopefully eke out the required improvement at a handy 25/1. Cheltenham 13.55 - Quartz De Thaix 1pt e/w
The Fairlawne Handicap Chase has a few of interest down the market in Carrickboy and Kumbeshwar but Double Ross will take some beating. A course and distance winner last time, easier ground should be no problem for him. His up 7lb though for what was a really tough race and I'm not sure he'll see out every bit of this if truly run on heavy ground. Yard form concerns me for Kumbeshwar who is otherwise well treated but it could be worth having a go at Byrne Group Plate winner Carrickboy for the lethal combination of Williams and Treadwell. He'll be a danger if allowed to dominate and is only 6lb higher for that relatively convincing win last March. However, I can't find a better bet than Cedre Bleu at 5/1. He wants juicy ground and, though he's crept up the handicap without winning, this trip is ideal for him and he is 7lb better off with Carrickboy for their match up a year ago. He needed the run at Newbury but looked very good last time at Ascot without ever going past Houblon Des Obeaux over 3 miles. No excuses today. Cheltenham 14.30 - Cedre Bleu 1pt win
