Jim Dreaper has had to come up with a Plan B to get Coral Welsh National fancy Goonyella to Chepstow on Saturday after stormy weather scuppered his original thinking. Goonyella: Chepstow hopeful Dreaper had hoped to send the six-year-old on the journey from Ireland on Tuesday as there are no ferries leaving the Republic on Christmas Day or the 26th. However, due to rough seas the ferry companies would not allow livestock to travel, and Dreaper will now send his charge up to Belfast in the hope he can sail on Thursday. Dreaper won the race in 2008 with the seven-year-old Notre Pere, who went on to win at Grade One level. "We didn't get him away today, which was the plan," said Dreaper, whose charge is joint-favourite with a number of firms in company with Well Refreshed. "The sea was too rough and they weren't shipping any animals., so that was a shame. "What we are planning to do now is to sail from Belfast on Thursday morning, which means a lot more driving when we get to the UK but there you go. "There's no ferries from (southern) Ireland on St Stephen's Day so that's why we are having to do it like that. "Other than that everything is fine, the horse is very well and the ground is in his favour."

David Pipe is one person delighted about the deluge around the country as he prepares Dynaste for the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. David Pipe: Trains King George hope Dynaste "Dynaste delighted us with his run at Haydock when runner-up to Cue Card and there is no reason to think that he cannot be at least as effective on Thursday," said Pipe. "He proved his liking for course and distance last year when running out the ready winner of the Feltham Novices' Chase, the torrential rain should not inconvenience him and his preparation has gone smoothly. "Let's hope there are no hard luck stories to the race and everyone returns safely." After Boxing Day, the Pond House team's attention turns to Saturday's Coral Welsh Grand National, a race Pipe's father won an extraordinary five times in six years between 1988 and 1993 through Bonanza Boy (twice), Carvill's Hill, Run for Free and Riverside. The trainer said: "This year we could well be represented by Goulanes, Ace High and Amigo. "It will be a dour test of stamina if the rain keeps up although fortunately, that seems to be the strong suit of all three of our likely candidates." In an update on his website, www.davidpipe.com, there was news of last week's Ascot bumper winner Seven Nation Army. "On paper it looked like one of the best National Hunt Flat races of the season so far and our four-year-old grey gelding improved again to score by a neck having looked likely to be swamped in the straight. "He will make a smashing hurdler/chaser in time but in the meantime he could continue in bumpers and would not be out of place in the Festival Bumper at Cheltenham come March."

Jockey Barry Geraghty reports Sprinter Sacre to be "flying" at home as he gears up for his seasonal return at Kempton on Friday. Sprinter Sacre: Firing on all cylinders again The seven-year-old was due to contest the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown earlier this month but trainer Nicky Henderson opted to skip that Grade One date as his charge was not quite right. Sprinter Sacre is now set to return in the Grade Two williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase as he seeks his to extend his 10-race unbeaten record over fences. "It was a frustration for everyone that he was just a bit off colour and missed the Tingle Creek but it's impossible to take any chances with a horse of his standing," Geraghty told his At The Races blog. "The main thing is that he's spot on now and although I hardly ever ride him at home - that's Nico De Boinville's privilege - I can assure you that he's flying because I worked up behind him recently and all I saw was him disappearing into the distance. "It is always worth repeating that I know how lucky I have been to ride a horse of his stature because he is, without doubt, a once in a lifetime horse. "As for the ground being soft or worse, I can't see that as an issue because it was heavy when he won the Victor Chandler at Cheltenham in January. "All tracks come alike to him - he won at Kempton in his novice chase days - and when you ride a horse with his profile you just hope everything goes well. "You have to be aware of every eventuality and despite his star quality I never take anything for granted. "But I do look forward to him because I really enjoy the experience and realise how lucky I am to be with him."

15:10 Thursday 26th December Racing Tips - 26/12/2013
One thing to say about Kempton today is that heavy ground seems very likely. It is still officially soft but there's plenty of rain around and they will be testing conditions. The 2 miles 4 and a half furlong handicap chase should be run at a decent gallop with the likes of Western Warhorse, Loose Chips and Oscar Magic lining up. That puts me off those 3, especially the Longsdon horse who looks to want an easy lead, though he does love it here. My concern for Ericht is the ground as I'm not sure he'll see out a strongly run affair for all he looks the likely winner at 10/3. The one that could be overpriced is Thunderstorm at 9/1 for a team in good form. A big plus is A P McCoy back on top having scored a five-timer on the 8 year old last term before a poor showing from the pair at Haydock in March. That really wasn't his true running but he is yet to show the same form on better ground and that will not have helped. He looked a little outpaced last time over half a furlong shorter but this track on heavy ground should suit. This is a tough race for its grade but he looks a solid chasing prospect an has dropped to a decent chase mark. Kempton 13.25 - Thunderstorm 1pt e/w
Really not sure who will win the Christmas Hurdle as perhaps neither of the principals will relish the ground. Best left alone at this stage. The King George market is a Christmas cracker with it 7/2 the field and little between 4 at the top. I'm not having Cue Card on this ground. Yes he stayed 3 miles 1 furlong at Haydock but this is a stiffer track (just look at average times for 3 miles) and he will not be allowed to dominate as he sometimes does. Al Ferof is a beast and I do like him for this but there have to be question marks over him staying in this ground on his first effort beyond 2 miles 5. Silviniaco Conti will stay but he doesn't look quite the same prospect as before that fall in the Gold Cup and he's unraced on really testing ground. The one that ticks all the boxes is Dynaste who won over course and distance in similar conditions last year in a quicker time than the King George itself. Heavily eased that day, his only slip up came at Cheltenham when connections went for the Jewson over the RSA. He ran really well on reappearance at Haydock and that was really a career best. I think he should be favourite and am happy to take 7/2 to repeat last year's effort and do what often proves very tricky - go successfully from Feltham to King George. Kempton 15.10 - Dynaste 2pt win
The 2 at the top of the market are of most appeal for the Rowland Meyrick today. Sydney Paget was a welcome winner for this site last time out and a convincing one too. It was a questionable field in terms of strength in depth but he was dominant and better value for the win than a winning margin of nearly 3 lengths suggested. I'm not sure he should be ahead of Cloudy Too in the betting however, and 13lb is some hike into what is a tougher race. Sue Smith is having a fine season and sends out 2 for this, though the Grand National winner surely wants better ground. Cloudy Too ran ok in the Hennessy and really wants softer ground. There's also a chance he didn't fully see out the trip but today's 3 miles 1 should be within reach. He won here over 2 miles 5 in February and wasn't stopping in what was a decent time. His dam was a sister to 2 runners that got 3 miles plus in testing conditions and, still only 7, he looks progressive enough to go very close here at 4/1, especially on the showing of his demolition of Tap Night when giving him weight on penultimate start. Wetherby 13.45 - Cloudy Too 1pt win
This could be a bad shout but Defy Logic looks worth another chance in Ireland today. Champagne Fever is a class act but has been beaten on 4 of his 9 starts as favourite and 2/5 is a grim price. He has won here before and expect Ruby to turn this into a true test, as he did in the Supreme, given that the horse could easily be aimed over further. That appears to be the tactics for Defy Logic conqueror Felix Yonger, who beat the Paul Nolan 6 year old in a truly run 2 mile contest at Punchestown last time. However, Defy Logic is a better prospect on softer ground than he had that day and is bred to get every bit of this and further. A strong gallop from Ruby Walsh should suit Mark Walsh's mount (I fancy he'll get 3 miles in time) and he looks a solid option at 5/1 on only his 6th start over obstacles. Leopardstown 14.55 - Defy Logic 1pt e/w

TIP OF THE DAY Kempton's 2m4 novice handicap chase (1.25) should be run at a decent gallop with the likes of Western Warhorse, Loose Chips and Oscar Magic lining up. Nicky Henderson has a nice new Christmas haircut but he doesn't look as happy as you might expect as he stands in the winner's enclosure, about 10 minutes after the victory of My Tent Or Yours in the William Hill Christmas Hurdle. Sprinter Sacre: Eagerly-awaited return or not? Yes, his pockets have personally been lined by several thousand pounds for his share of the winner's prize money, but there is little air of self-satisfied contentment. Instead, more than 24 hours before Sprinter Sacre lines up in the Desert Orchid Chase, the trainer's nerves are already somewhere near explosion point. Sure, Silviniaco Conti deserves all the plaudits for the hardy attitude he displayed in grinding down Cue Card to win the King George, but an on-song Sprinter Sacre would have his measure over two miles, two and a half miles and more than likely over three miles too. The king of steeplechasing returns to action against Sire De Grugy and four other rivals in a contest to which so many are looking forward. But not Henderson. 'Do you sleep well before Sprinter Sacre runs?' someone asks, already knowing the answer that they are going to get. "No, and I certainly won't tonight," comes the reply. "In fact, for two pins I'd take him out now. I hate it, I absolutely dread it. "Is he vulnerable? Of course he's vulnerable. He's as vulnerable as he's ever been. He's well, he seems to be over his little problem and I'm pleased with him but the purpose of this run is to bring him on for [the Clarence Hourse Chase] at Ascot and he's going to come on for it. "He's up against Sire De Grugy, who is basically the best there is bar him on this side of the Irish Sea - in fact, it's a situation not unlike My Tent Or Yours and The New One. They are the best in Britain and if he's going to be found out, it could be here." Only "a ridiculous amount of rain", the trainer adds, would see Sprinter Sacre ruled out of the race due to the going, despite it catching out some of Henderson's other runners on the Boxing Day card. "I don't think I could do it to Kempton after the effort they have gone to, even putting some extra money into the race - although it's gone and attracted Sire De Grugy too, who might not even have run here otherwise," he goes on. "There is an enormous amount of responsibility when you have a horse like him, but you've got to start somewhere and he desperately needs a run now. "It feels like nothing but an impressive win will be good enough and that's never a good situation to be in." The stage might be a little soggier than all bar connections of Sire De Grugy would have hoped, but it's still set for a starring performance. Now all Sprinter Sacre has to do is something that none of the six favourites managed on the first day of the meeting and win. Does the aeroplane still have his wings?

View from connections ahead of Friday's williamhill.com Novices' Chase at Kempton. Dodging Bullets: Kempton hopeful Dodging Bullets will face five rivals as he attempts to make it a hat-trick over fences in the williamhill.com Novices' Chase at Kempton on Friday. The Paul Nicholls-trained five-year-old has made an encouraging start to his chasing career with wins at Kempton and Cheltenham. He is unlikely to have things his own way in the Grade Two over two miles, registered as the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase, as his five rivals are headed by Valdez. Alan King's six-year-old has won both his races over the bigger obstacles in great fashion at Exeter and Newbury. Nicky Henderson took this prize 12 months ago with subsequent Arkle Trophy hero Simonsig. The champion trainer relies this time on Grandouet. A top-class hurdler, he had an inauspicious start to his chasing career when unseating Barry Geraghty at Sandown but showed he could be potentially smart when only beaten a neck by Hinterland at Sandown in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase earlier this month. Red Riverman, Bin End and Lindsay's Dream make up the field. King is bullish about the prospects of Valdez in what he believes will be a race to savour. "Valdez has won both his races over fences so far, and he was particularly impressive at Newbury last time," the Barbury Castle trainer told www.alankingracing.co.uk. "Inevitably, questions will be asked as to just what he beat as the favourite (Black River) fell down the back straight, but he absolutely destroyed them and I am looking forward to what looks an exciting race." Henderson reports all to be well with Grandouet as he tries to make it third time lucky over fences. "He ran a very good race last time and he's in good form," said the Seven Barrows trainer.

Views from connections ahead of the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown on Friday. Arvika Ligeonniere: Leopardstown hopeful Connections of Arvika Ligeonniere are under no illusions about the task facing the talented chaser as he tackles proven champion Sizing Europe in a fascinating Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown. Arvika Ligeonniere enjoyed an excellent novice campaign over fences last season, but jumped out to his right when winning the Racing Post Novice Chase at this fixture a year ago and then fell in the Irish Arkle over the same course and distance. Willie Mullins' charge also disappointed left-handed in the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham, but is unbeaten in three starts back on right-handed tracks since, most recently claiming the Grade One John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase. Mullins' son Patrick is not concerned about going the other way round in Friday's Grade One feature, but has the utmost respect for Henry de Bromhead's brilliant stable star, saying: "He is in great form, and he won a Grade One going this way before. "He jumps and travels and the trip won't be a problem, but Sizing Europe is the benchmark." Victory in this race a year ago was one of four triumphs last season for the 11-year-old Sizing Europe and he was not disgraced behind Sprinter Sacre at Cheltenham and Punchestown in the spring. The veteran made a winning return at Gowran Park, but having been held in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal over three miles, he now comes back to two miles and a furlong. De Bromhead said: "He seems in great form at home. We're very happy with him going into the race. "Arvika Ligeonniere looks very good, but we'll give it a go and see what happens." Sizing Europe's jockey Andrew Lynch said: "I'm looking forward to the race and our lad is in good form at home. The way he's going you wouldn't think he's an 11-year-old. "Arvika Ligeonniere has been very impressive so far this season, so it will be an interesting race. "We're very happy with our horse." Baily Green was beaten just over a length by Sizing Europe at Gowran Park and reopposes for trainer Mouse Morris. He said: "I couldn't have been happier with him at Gowran Park and it was unfortunate that he had a hiccup afterwards, but that's racing and it's not held him up at all. "He would probably prefer a bit of a give in the ground now that he's getting a bit older and while he runs on anything, he's a horse who goes well with give. "He is effective over two and two and a half miles - he ran over the latter at Gowran because there were limited condition chases over the two around that time." Rubi Light ran a blinder to finish second to Sizing Europe in this race a year ago, but was no match for Arvika Ligeonniere at Punchestown last time. His trainer Robbie Hennessy said: "It's a hell of a race, but at least we are going to get proper soft ground for the first time this winter. It will be the worst ground we've had this season, which will suit us. "I'm not saying we're going to turn the tables on Arvika Ligeonniere or anything like that, but we're putting a tongue-tie on our horse for the first time as he's just made a noise once or twice during work at home, so that won't do him any harm. "He was second in this race last year and was second in the Lexus the year before, so he likes Leopardstown and the ground should suit. "At the back of my mind I'm thinking maybe Arvika Ligeonniere isn't as good going left-handed, they were saying that all last year, but to be honest, he looks a different horse this season." Shark Hanlon's Hidden Cyclone steps up in grade having run an excellent race to finish third in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in mid-November. The trainer admits his charge has plenty on his plate. Hanlon said: "It's a very good race, but our lad is in great form and we're going to step him up to this grade and see how he gets on. "He ran a big race in Cheltenham the last day and we're hoping he'll run a big race again, but either way we'll have a better idea about where we're going afterwards. "We're hoping he might be good enough to go back to Cheltenham in March, but this will tell us a lot more." Nicky Henderson's British raider Kid Cassidy is an interesting contender having beaten subsequent Tingle Creek scorer Sire De Grugy on his latest start at Cheltenham. Henderson said: "He's got a tough task. It's his first time out of handicap company, but he's in good form, so we're giving it a go." Tony Martin's Benefficient completes the seven-strong field

1.10, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, CATCHER STAR (IRE), ridden by Tom Cannon and trained by Nick Gifford, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding was big, weak and backward and may have improved during the summer and benefited from the fitting of cheek pieces for the first time. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of CATCHER STAR (IRE) could be reviewed.
1.45, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the circumstances under which the top weight, WAYWARD PRINCE, trained by Hilary Parrott, had been withdrawn. Having heard evidence from the trainer’s representative they referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jonathan England, the rider of the winner CLOUDY TOO (IRE), from the final fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip when clearly winning. The Stewards suspended England for 2 days as follows: Thursday 9 and Friday 10 January 2014.
2.55, fifth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, NOBLE LEGEND, ridden by Andrew Thornton and trained by Caroline Bailey, compared with its previous run at Haydock Park on 23 November where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the trainer could offer no explanation other than that the gelding had improved following a suspected virus in the yard. They ordered NOBLE LEGEND to be routine tested.

14:00 Friday 27th December Racing Tips - 27/12/2013
Selections for today's Paddy Power Chase come from 2 pairs, of which I'll go for 1 from each. The first pair are out and out stayers Rich Revival and Panther Claw. The former looked very progressive last term and probably suffered for drying ground in the Irish National at 10/1. He goes fresh and will want plenty of rain. The reason for going after the latter is that Panther Claw was just held behind Rich Revival off level weights last December but has 6lb in hand today and he has a chance from out in front at 14/1. He will want a stern test but should ensure it and the forecast overnight rain is on his side. 2nd pairing is Competitive Edge and Spring Heeled who perhaps wants a decent surface. He won a maiden hurdle on heavy ground but his best efforts since have come on good and he showed up really well before fading at Cheltenham last time over a little further on a decent surface. Mark Walsh rode Competitive Edge to his last win and is back on today. He will want heavy ground but there are question marks as to whether he truly stays. He is just a little too big to ignore at 40/1 given an encouraging display back over hurdles last time on ground that probably wasn't juicy enough. A step back up in trip will help and he's won here before. Leopardstown 14.55 - Panther Claw 1pt e/w Leopardstown 14.55 - Competitive Edge 1pt e/w
More rain has fallen at Kempton and, while the ground wasn't quite as bad as feared yesterday, it is likely to be tougher going this afternoon. I'm a fan of Utopie Des Bordes and she has a chance under top-weight in the Mares Hurdle but others look better treated. The trip should suit the stepping up Scholastica but she is a little short and the rest do look like a field of non-stayers. Expect a steady gallop with only a few that like to go forward and that may suit mud lover Ballinahow Star who doesn't look a likely winner but I fancy her to be in the top 3 at 12/1. She is a half sister to a 3 mile winner and her dam is from the family of Stayers Hurdle winner Shuil Ar Aghaidh. If they go hell for leather then she may well fade but at least she has a 3 mile win to her name and can resume her progression over hurdles after 2 slightly underwhelming efforts over fences. Kempton 14.00 - Ballinahow Star 1pt e/w
The non-winners just keep on coming and Fago is very unlikely to win the Desert Orchid Chase. However, 33/1 means around 8's about him finishing 2nd to the machine is a decent bet. He showed why he was brought over from France as a 4 year old last year when winning at Haydock last time out in a time very close to standard and he will have his ground this afternoon. He wants a strongly run 2 miles and the advantage today is that Daryl Jacob will be given free reign to ensure that out in front. Expect him to be ridden from the front and try and do what Sanctuaire failed to in last year's Tingle Creek. It will surely be set up nicely for Sprinter Sacre, and Sire De Grugy is a heavy ground winner who will suit a test. I just feel that Paul Nicholls has his yard flying at the minute and Fago, once single figures for the Arkle, is underestimated. Kempton 14.30 - Fago 1pt e/w
It would be odd to put up a shortish price now so Specialagent Alfie gets the vote at 16/1 for the last at Kempton. The key here is a significant drop in class against some lesser experienced rivals. That is as much an advantage as it is a danger given you'd expect something to be better treated. Likeliest of those is either Three Kingdoms or Vibrato Valtat and preference would just be for the latter in first time tongue-tied. He is an ex-French mud handler and should come on for the 7lb pull he has with Three Kingdoms on their Cheltenham run. Alfie has a sole win to his name on good ground but he handles juicy conditions and this is the lowest class he has contested for 10 months. Consistent since, he was 7th in Listed company last time out when fading over an extra furlong but his 2nd on penultimate start when looking a touch outpaced on decent ground at Ascot gives him every chance. A drop back in trip and class from Sandown will help off only 1lb higher and the yard has picked up of late, sending out their first hurdle winner of the season yesterday. Kempton 15.40 - Specialagent Alfie 1pt e/w ===============================================

DAY TWO of Leopardstown's Christmas meeting will take place after a morning inspection although officials will continue to monitor the strong wind that had caused concerns overnight.
Conditions remain fairly wild on Friday morning resulting in Leopardstown restricting access to some public areas of the course but the wind is forecast to ease after 10am.
There were 14mm of rain overnight at Leopardstown, where the going is soft, and more heavy showers are due to pass over the course during the day.
A statement from Leopardstown said: "Today's meeting will proceed as planned. Certain public areas will be restricted until the winds ease. The situation will be monitored throughout the morning."

Jump racing's best-known horse Sprinter Sacre is set to undergo tests at Newmarket following his flop at Kempton Park on Friday. Nicky Henderson: Taking careful approach with Sprinter Sacre Having taken initial veterinary advice with regard to the possibility of the the seven-year-old suffering an irregular heartbeat, trainer Nicky Henderson elected to return him to his training establishment at Seven Barrows. Henderson said:" We are still on the heart monitoring side of it, and it's still irregular. "We were thinking of taking him to Newmarket straight away but I think the horse has had a lot of stress today and I'd rather take him home tonight. "At the fifth fence he was Sprinter Sacre at his exciting best, and two fences later Barry had to stop him very quickly. "We have got to investigate this, he's not distressed and he's not going to have a heart attack or anything. "He is going to go up to Newmarket tomorrow and he has an appointment at 10am with Celia Marr (specialist in equine internal medicine and cardiology) at Rossdales. "She is the best person for these sort of issues, we used her when Spirit Son was paralysed." Denman is a recent case of a top National Hunt horse recovering from what is often known as atrial fibrillation. The 2008 Gold Cup hero had an operation to correct a problem that September and although he was beaten on his racecourse return the following February, he was capable of finishing second to Kauto Star back at Cheltenham and winning the Hennessy a few months later. Henderson went on: "We don't go around listening to all the horses' hearts - if one worked badly then you might do but Sprinter Sacre has never given us any cause for concern. "The one everyone has mentioned is Denman, and he went on to finish second in three more Gold Cups. "If we can get to the bottom of it, then we know what we can do to repair it." Speaking in his blog on At The Races, Geraghty said: "It's always sad when a great horse like Sprinter Sacre is beaten but the main thing to remember is that he lives to fight another day. "He felt grand during the race but with him I'm always having to say, 'whoa!, whoa!' but then all of a sudden the 'whoa!' was gone. "He clambered over the second fence down the back straight and in a couple of strides I knew something wasn't right. "I know him very well and what he means to everyone so I didn't need to think twice that the immediate and right thing to do was pull him up and keep him safe. "He was fine as I was trotting him back slowly to the paddock but there is something amiss and the expert view seems to be that it is an irregular heartbeat. "He'll be getting the best treatment there is and there have been quite a few very good horses that have suffered this problem and been successfully treated. "All we want to see now is him get back fit and well - hopefully for the Game Spirit at Newbury in February."

View from connections ahead of Saturday's Coral Welsh National at Chepstow. Highland Lodge: Fancied to stay National trip Emma Lavelle believes ultra-testing conditions for Saturday's Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow will suit her representative Highland Lodge. The seven-year-old finished fourth in the Hennessy Gold Cup behind Triolo D'Alene on ground that was quicker than ideal. With conditions on the testing side of heavy and three miles and five furlongs to overcome, stamina will be at a premium - which Lavelle hopes will see Highland Lodge at his best. "HIghland Lodge came out of the Hennessy very well indeed," she said. "It was just a shame that that the ground was as good as it was at Newbury as all he does is stay. "Whereas some in the Hennessy were able to quicken, he is just a relentless galloper. "It will be very tough going, but we know he handles it very well and I think he'll stay. "Tidal Bay running means we can run off a lovely weight (10st 6lb)." Tidal Bay heads a maximum field of 20. Paul Nicholls' veteran proved his aptitude for marathon distances when winning the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown in April 2012 and went on to prove he could still mix it with the best around when victorious in the Lexus Chase in Ireland last Christmas. Despite turning 13 in just a few days, he reappeared with a win over hurdles at Wetherby but did not find the Betfair Chase at Haydock enough of a stamina test. Nicholls believes the return to a marathon distance will be right up Tidal Bay's street. He said: "Tidal Bay won the bet365 at Sandown over three-miles-five on very heavy ground. You can take your time with him and he has a touch of class." Nicholls has a second string to his bow in Hawkes Point, but he has only had 10 runs in his life. "Hawkes Point ran very well at Chepstow last time," said the Ditcheat handler. "We've thought he would stay marathon trips for a while." Jim Dreaper faced a logistical nightmare with Goonyella after the Christmas Eve ferry on which he was originally booked was cancelled due to rough seas. He was instead forced to travel from Belfast on Boxing Day. "He left our yard at 7am and got to Chepstow at midnight so it was a long journey but he's there," said Dreaper. "He's eating and drinking - not as much as we'd like, but I'm sure he will pick up throughout the day. "He needs all the distance you can find after three miles. He seems to stay extremely well, and obviously the Chepstow race is ideal for that sort of horse. "He definitely has a chance, He's only six, and it's possibly pitching him in a bit too much or a bit too high at this stage of his life, but he doesn't know he's six and we're anxious to have a go. "The only similarity with Notre Pere (2008 winner) is that they're both genuine, honest stayers. "The hustle and bustle won't upset him much." Well Refreshed has always looked an ideal candidate for this type of race since winning the Grand National Trial at Haydock last season. He returned to form when third at Sandown and the presence of Tidal Bay means he only carries 10st 2lb. Trainer Gary Moore said: "He seems in good form and he must have a good chance. "He's got a lovely racing weight as far as I'm concerned. "As long as he jumps a bit better than he did at Sandown he must have some sort of chance." Home hope Teaforthree was narrowly touched off in the race 12 months ago and third in the Grand National at Aintree. However, trainer Rebecca Curtis has made it known that the nine-year-old met with a setback earlier in the season. Curtis said: "He had a good summer's break. He did have a slight bit of a setback just after he came back in, which is why he's late running again. "It's a shame not to have got a prep run into him, but that's the way it has gone this year. "He'll be very fit but he normally does just take a run to be at his best. You're always vulnerable to a horse at the bottom of the weights, but we're there hoping for the best. "We've not completely ruled out he might have a run in the Gold Cup this year as he jumps and travels so well, and then we'll be thinking of Grand National again and hoping he doesn't get a stupid weight." Jonjo O'Neill's Merry King is only six but ran a cracker in the Hennessy to finish fifth. "Merry King is in good form. He ran a nice race in the Hennessy. He came there well but when they quickened up, he couldn't go with them," said O'Neill.

Fresh from notching a first Grade One with Annacotty at Kempton on Boxing Day, trainer Martin Keighley and jockey Ian Popham have genuine claims of another top-level triumph with Creepy in the Betfred Goals Galore Challow Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday. Creepy and Timesremembered are set to renew rivalries Creepy has come of age this year, beating a fair sort at Chepstow in October, finishing second to Kings Palace, who looks just about the best staying novice to date, and then heading back to Cheltenham to win a Grade Two. Keighley admits his five-year-old needs to improve again, but thinks everything will be in his favour. "It would be nice to win another Grade One so quickly after the first," said the Gloucestershire handler. "This will be tough, though, make no mistake. It might be a small field but you can't rule any of them out. "I'd say he needs to improve again from his Cheltenham form but I can't see why he wouldn't. "He's going there in good form and we know he stays further than two-five. "The ground won't bother him and he's won at the track." Emma Lavelle's Timesremembered finished a length behind Creepy at Cheltenham but carried a 7lb penalty that day for his win in the Persian War at Chepstow. "I hope things are in his favour this time as I felt he just ran a bit flat last time," said Lavelle. "He's very hard on himself at home and at the races he's very active, so we've given him time to freshen up. "He seems in very good form at home but it will be survival of the fittest - it will be very tiring ground. "I don't think that will bother him, though, as he's won a point-to-point and may want three miles in time, despite being a strong traveller." Malcolm Jefferson feels conditions will suit Oscar Rock. "He's in great order and the ground will suit him better than the others, I think," said the Malton handler. "I'm very happy with him and I'm sure he'll run well. "When Ballyalton beat him at Newcastle the ground was a bit quick but, more than anything, I think we got the tactics wrong. If we'd been as positive as we were at Wetherby we might have seen a different result. "Take nothing away from the other horse, though. He's won another good race since and is very nice, but you can't give that AP McCoy half an inch as he takes a yard. We just gave him something to aim at that day. "I think he'll run very well." Captain Cutter, Kaki De La Pree and Shantou Magic complete the field, but the aforementioned Ballyalton was taken out at the final declaration stage.

SPRINTER SACRE has an appointment with heart specialist Celia Marr at Rossdales veterinary surgeons in Newmarket this morning that could determine his future after an unbeaten run of ten sensational chase victories came to a dramatic end when he was pulled up with five fences still to jump in the williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase.
An irregular heartbeat was diagnosed after Nicky Henderson’s seven-time Grade 1 winner, sent off at 2-9 to take care of five rivals on Friday, was to general disbelief pulled up abruptly by Barry Geraghty after uncharacteristically sticky jumps at both the sixth and seventh fences in a race won by Sire De Grugy.
Speaking on the Morning Line, Henderson said: “He left here at 6am this morning to go to Newmarket for electrocardiogram tests [at 10am]. He ate up last night and wanted his breakfast. We trotted him up and he's perfectly sound.
“This is a clinical situation, not a physical problem. We hope to know more today and will keep everyone informed.”
As short as 1-4 for a repeat victory in Cheltenham’s BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase before the race, Sprinter Sacre can now be backed with Skybet at 5-4 in a market most firms have suspended. =================================================
Solwhit out of Christmas Hurdle World Hurdle hero Solwhit is a non-runner for today’s Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown as a result of being lame. Zaidpour has assumed the mantle of favourite for the Grade 1, trading around 4-5. 1 hour ago =================================================
Leopardstown update Leopardstown (@leopardstownrc), who hosts today's Lexus Chase card, tweeted: "Chase: yielding to soft; Hurdle: soft after 6mm of rain yesterday. Bright day forecast with sunny spells and chance of passing showers." 1 hour ago ====================================================
Raining at Chepstow Chepstow clerk of the course Keith Ottesen said on the Morning Line: "We've had four inches of rain this week but the track has taken it well. The rain won't relent just yet and we'll may be get another couple of millimetres." 2 hours ago ===========================================================
