Freak accident at Market Rasen claims life of Amok The Tim Vaughan-trained Amok was put down after a freak accident at Market Rasen yesterday in which he sustained a suspected broken back when jumping into a brook in the middle of the course. The five-year-old was a winner of three races. Clerk of the course Jane Hedley: "The horse jumped a rail into the middle of the course and it was a freak accident. It is a wide brook which we need for our reservoir but it is not railed as that would draw the horses' attention to it."

FROM ANOTHER FORUM.
This is someone's desciption of a problem:-
Earlier this year I opened an account with online bookies " marathonbet " I deposited £100.00 then a few days later received an email saying my account had been suspended for random verification. As I was busy I ignored it and then forgot about it for a few months. A few weeks ago I supplied the required scan of my passport and address ID. They replied saying they needed " evidence of gameplay and transaction " I replied saying my account is suspended so cannot access anything and would they explain what they mean. I never even placed a bet on the account ! - that was four weeks ago. They didn't bother replying so I chased with another email a week ago - still no reply !! So what can I do - any idea's ?? Definitely the poorest service ever from a bookie for me. So - BEWARE MARATHONBET !!! Please feel free to spread the word on other forums.

ARENA RACING COMPANY has launched a consultation program to consider the development of an all-weather course at Newcastle.
The proposals are based around replacing the existing turf Flat track with an all-weather surface that would incorporate the only floodlit straight mile in the world.
The existing turf jumps track would be unaffected and there would be scope to have more jumps fixtures at the course than are possible at present. The development would also leave the track with an option to host its most famous race, the John Smiths Northumberland Plate, on a turf surface.
The course's owners hope that a planning application for the scheme can be lodged by January 31 and if successful racing on the new surface would commence in 2015.
Arc managing director Tony Kelly said: "The development of an all-weather track in the north has long been an ambition of ours and this proposal would develop the best floodlit all-weather track in the world given the superb wide, galloping track and our ability to incorporate a floodlit straight mile."

While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
We enjoyed one of our biggest results in recent weeks when the Nicky Henderson-trained Triolo D'Alene obliged at the surprisingly large odds of 20/1 in the Hennessy Gold Cup, despite his trainer's recent winning record in the race and proven winning form on the ground. In the same race, our each-way selection Highland Lodge also finished fourth at 6/1, while Henderson's My Tent Or Yours lived up to his 8/11 starting price when romping home in Newcastle's Fighting Fifth Hurdle. There's more top Jumps action on offer this Sat- urday for the enjoyment of Channel 4 viewers, with the broadcaster covering the meetings from Aintree (2.05, 2.40 and 3.15) and Sandown (1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35.) Nicky Henderson was the third-most-winning Jumps trainer of the week (to Monday, 2 Decem- ber) in the UK, but leads the long-term trainer stats by wins at both Aintree and Sandown, so his runners at either meeting will be worth a second glance. The most successful trainer of the week was Donald McCain, who trained 7 winners and chalked up a superb 38% strike rate, just ahead of Philip Hobbs (37.5%), who tied with Paul Nicholls by wins (6 apiece.) Given McCain's form, it will come as no surprise to you that it was his stable's first jockey Jason Maguire who topped the jockeys' table by wins. Maguire's 7 wins put him just clear of Tony McCoy (6), and Richard Johnson, James Best and Daryl Jacob, who all tied on 5 wins. Maguire's 36% strike rate was excellent, but he was bettered by the 41% jointly achieved by Best and Jacob, though ahead of McCoy's 31.5%. The feature race at Aintree is the Grade 3 Becher Chase, over 3m 2f, which uses the Grand National fences, and is often used as a trial for the race it- self. Given McCain's current form, his two possible runners in this race - Across The Bay and Kruzhlinin - are interesting. Across The Bay is only 1lb higher than his last winning mark over fences and has won his only start over this distance, he has claims, if perhaps more testing ground than the expected good-soft would be an advantage. Kruzhlinin is perhaps younger than the stats would suggest to be ideal, at six years, when no horse younger than 7 years has won the race in the past decade (most nine years or upwards), but he has decent form, beating subsequent Old Roan winner Conquisto by eight lengths in a novices' chase last season. He is also 2 from 3 (67%) on the ground. Jonjo O'Neill's team has been having a good season and they have a live chance with Storm Survivor, who looked in need of further when a fair third over 3m on decent ground at Chepstow last time. There could be more to come from him and he's unbeaten over this distance. Sandown's feature race is the Tingle Creek Chase which should, on all previous form, go the way of Nicky Henderson's Sprinter Sacre. If he doesn't turn up or has a mishap, one who could go well at an each-way price is the Mick Channon-trained Somersby, who has winning form over distance, on the expected good ground and at Sandown. Given Henderson's record at Sandown, and also, more specifically, in the Listed handicap hurdle over 2m, of which he has trained the winner in two of the last three years, his possible runners in this year's race are interesting; the unexposed Karazhan accounted for a few notable scalps in his few starts at an ordinary level last season and has winning form on the ground and is 3 from 4 (75%) over distance. He could be open to further improvement. Another to consider is David Pipe's Waterunder, who has won half his starts over dis- tance, on a variety of ground, and also won on his seasonal debut off his present handicap mark. Today's race is harder, but there could be more to come from him. Please note that the television schedules and race times are subject to change and may differ from those listed here. ============================================================
NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
On the all-weather, Kempton's Monday meeting boasted a warm division of the 1m two-year-old maiden, in which 13 runners lined up, some rep- resenting top yards, such as those of trainers John Gosden, Willie Haggas, Marco Botti and David Simcock. The latter's CURBYOURENTHUSIASM turned in an improved effort on this latest start, the second of his career, despite not enjoying a trouble-free race. He had already made a tardy start by the time he was hampered inside the first two furlongs, but he then made headway on the inside going into the last two furlongs. He was a little one-paced in the last furlong, but still finished a fair fifth and built on his debut performance when 10th of 14 run- ners, over course and distance, three weeks earlier. There's more to come from him. Finishing one place behind Curbyourenthusiasm was trainer Marcus Tregoning's AYERS ROCK , a son of Bushranger out of a Polish Precedent mare. Having run very greenly over 7f on his debut, the step up to 1m helped, and while Ayers Rock ran more professionally on this latest start, it was apparent that he needs further. Ex- pect him to show more in handicaps next sea- son over 10f or more, if not winning a maiden in the meantime. As a multiple Grade 3 or Listed winner over hur- dles, it was no big shock to see punters lumping on to the Nicky Henderson-trained UNE ARTISTE , when she made her chasing debut in the 2m 4f novices' handicap chase at Plumpton. There were only three runners, one of which was the useful Buthelezi, who was a decent Flat horse and has subsequently shown some form over hurdles, if not quite to the level of Une Artiste. However, this was his third start over fences, having run well in defeat in two decent novice or beginners' chases so far this season. Buthelezi and Une Artiste went clear of the third horse, and given Une Artiste's lack of chasing ex- perience relative to Buthelezi, it must have been pleasing for connections that she jumped as well as she did. She was also giving him 7lb and was only beaten three quarters of a length. She can build on this first run of the season, as have some of her stablemates in recent weeks, and she can also be placed to advantage in mares' races, if connections elect to go down that route. Also at Plumpton, Nicky Henderson's ELECTROLYSER looked one to note when com- fortably winning the 2m novices' hurdle that opened the afternoon's proceedings. A former decent Flat stayer when trained by Clive Cox, winning two Listed races and at distances be- tween 1m 6f and 2m, Electrolyser will surely stay further than 2m over hurdles in due course, although this race was a sensible start- ing point for the season ahead, and having been rated 114 at his peak on the Flat, he re- ally could be anything over hurdles. In the same race, although time will surely prove that the Lawney Hill-trained runner-up COME ON LAURIE was flattered to have fin- ished within three lengths of Electrolyser, the five-year-old former bumper winner did in turn finish well clear of the remainder. Although his previous form doesn't inspire thoughts of high- grade races as readily as Electrolyser does, Come On Laurie's effort was such that connec- tions can reasonably aim to land a similar race at this level, and then make further plans from there on. ===================================================
RACING NEWS.
Jockeys Timmy Murphy and Dominic Elsworth are to face an inquiry at this week's meeting at Wincanton following their alleged fight in the jockeys' chang- ing room at Newbury racecourse last week. The incident followed the 2m 4f handicap chase on the Friday of New- bury's two-day Hennessy meeting, in which Elsworth finished second on Easter Meteor and Murphy fourth on Upsilon Bleu. According to reports, the incident aggravated an old injury of Murphy's, which led to his shoulder being dislo- cated, and forced him to miss his ride on the favourite, Old Father, in the Hennessy Gold Cup the following day. Racing presenter Rishi Persad may be on the receiving end of the microphone next March, after it was announced by Chel- tenham racecourse that he will be one of twelve non-professional riders to line up in the St Patrick's Day Derby charity race at the Cheltenham Festival. A month after The Fugue was narrowly beaten at the Breeders' Cup meeting, trainer John Gosden enjoyed a notable success in the US when Seek Again landed the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park racecourse. Seek Again, who was fifth in the Cambridgeshire this season and is owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah, provided Gosden with his sec- ond victory in the race. Trainer Paul Nicholls declared his long- time stable servant Celestial Halo to be "awesome" after the nine-year-old son of Galileo vanquished his rivals in the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury's Hen- nessy meeting last Saturday. Celestial Halo is now priced at 16/1 for the World Hurdle next March, where he could face his superstar stablemate Big Buck's, who, although returning from injury, is still the 3/1 ante-post favourite for the race. Nicholls said that Celestial Halo may now head to Ascot's Long Walk Hurdle later this month. 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander has been retired. The 12-year-old was pulled up by Paddy Brennan after weakening out of con- tention at an early stage in the Hennessy Gold Cup last weekend, although Brennan allowed him to canter past the grandstand to applause from the specta- tors. No firm retirement plans have been outlined for Imperial Commander at this stage. The winner of eight races from 22 starts under Rules, including the Gold Cup, the Paddy Power Gold Cup, the Ryan Air Chase and the Betfair Chase, he amassed total prize earnings of more than £700,000. Trainer Nicky Henderson and his team enjoyed a Saturday to remember last weekend when he landed the feature races at Newbury and Newcastle. Stable jockey Barry Geraghty rode the 20/1 win- ner of the Grade 3 Hennessy Gold Cup, Triolo d'Alene, while, at Newcastle, the Tony McCoy-ridden My Tent Or Yours landed the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle. The results propelled Henderson to third in the train- ers' championship (as of 1 December), behind Jonjo O'Neill and Paul Nicholls =========================================================
RACE RATINGS.
Saturday, 7 December - 3.00 Sandown BetVictor Tingle Creek Chase (Grade 1) (Class 1) 2m
The following horses were entered for this race but many may not run. The runner with the highest rating will be the selection of our team.
11151- Captain Conan 247 6 Nicky Henderson Three-time Grade 1 winner as a novice chaser last season, between 2m and 2m 4f, and on ground rang- ing between heavy and good. Has winning form over course (unbeaten at Sandown in three starts) and distance, beating Hinterland in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase last year, and also Sire De Grugy on another outing. That form entitles him to plenty of respect, but likely to play second fiddle to superstar stable- mate Sprinter Sacre. RATING 98 2222-1 Hinterland 28 5 Paul Nicholls A bit disappointing that he didn't win last season, but ran at a high level, and latest win, in a four-runner novices' chase over course and distance, came after the favourite unseated when hampered late on. Faces much stiffer task here and while he possesses plenty of ability, more needed. RATING 96 3F42-7 His Excellency 20 5 David Pipe Ran more than 10 times for Pipe between August and April last season, including in this race when beaten more than 30 lengths by Sprinter Sacre. Ran to a decent level, but held in these sort of races and suspicion remains that he will be better-suited by re- turn to handicaps. RATING 92 1P7P-5 Kauto Stone 35 7 Paul Nicholls Won the 3m Down Royal Champion Chase last au- tumn, but disappointed in all starts since then and finished a beaten fifth back at Down Royal on sea- sonal debut. Was second in this race two years ago to Sizing Europe, but now has something to prove. RATING 93 42RR-6 Mad Moose 20 9 Nigel Twiston-Davies Quirky but talented sort, who had a couple of nice runs on the Flat this season, including when second in a Group 3 at Chester. That form gives him a chance of being placed, also his second to Sprinter Sacre in the Victor Chandler in January, but is often reluctant (or refuses point blank) to race, so not one for punters of a nervous disposition. RATING 92 314-54 Oiseau De Nuit 20 11 Colin Tizzard Game, but of advancing years. Enjoyed a successful campaign last season, when his third in the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival was followed by a win in the Grade 3 Red Rum Chase at Aintree. Good form, but confirms impression that he is more of a top handicapper rather than one to be taken seri- ously at this level. RATING 94 411-12 Sire De Grugy 20 7 Gary Moore Emerged as one of last season's better novice- chasers. Was beaten over course and distance by Captain Conan, but improved through the campaign to beat former Champion Chaser Finians Rainbow in the Grade 2 Celebration Chase over course and dis- tance. Could give Sprinter Sacre something to think about if that horse isn't up to scratch on his seasonal debut. RATING 99 34U-1 Somersby 32 9 Mick Channon Fine servant for connections for both former and cur- rent trainers Henrietta Knight and Mick Channon, winning the Haldon Gold Cup Chase on his latest start and seasonal debut. Although a good result, that latest win did nothing to change impression that he is on a gentle downward slope, if still of a very high order. RATING 96 575F-5 Tataniano 20 9 Richard Rowe Another older horse whose form is respectable, but gently declining with age. Probably in this race in the hope of picking up some of the decent prize money available for the lower places, and others preferable. RATING 91 P5-036 Viva Colonia 14 8 Brian Ellison Form when third in the Old Roan Chase on autumnal comeback two starts ago reads well, if still leaving Viva Colonia with a lot to find in this company. Like a few others, arguably hoping for the race to cut up and allow a crack at landing some prize money for finish- ing in the minor places. RATING 92 11111- Sprinter Sacre 228 7 Nicky Henderson The one to beat on all form, winning three Grade 1s in six weeks at the end of last season, at Chel- tenham, Aintree and Punchestown, leaving all his rivals toiling in his wake, if looking tired by the end of his last race. A few of the stable's leading hopes have needed a first run of the season, but Sprinter Sacre would still be expected to have ability enough in reserve to compensate. RATING 100 ====================================================

A drop in distance is not expected to inconvenience Sir Des Champs as the Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up prepares for a fascinating rematch with Flemenstar in Sunday's John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase. Sir Des Champs: Trainer happy with prep for Grade 1 prize Flemenstar won the argument with a brilliant display in this two-and-a-half-mile Grade One 12 months ago, but the Willie Mullins-trained Sir Des Champs reversed the placings when the pair met in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown in early February. Sir Des Champs continued to go from strength to strength for the remainder of the campaign, following up his superb second behind Bobs Worth at Cheltenham with victory at the Punchestown Festival. Mullins said: "He looks great and I have been very happy with his work. "I've always thought he's got plenty of speed. He's a horse that carries condition and always looks a bit big. "All going well (on Sunday), the Lexus will be the plan at Leopardstown (December 28). "This season will be geared around another crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. "We had high hopes for him last season but the ground went against us (at Cheltenham), but he still ran a fantastic race to finish second to Bobs Worth. "Tactically we might do things a bit differently." Joining Sir Des Champs is stable companion Arvika Ligeonniere, who is unbeaten when going right-handed over fences and looked better than ever when winning on his seasonal return in the Clonmel Oil Chase. "He's very keen and it was great to get a run under his belt early in the season at Clonmel," Mullins said of Ruby Walsh's mount. "He's a shade better going right-handed, but handled Leopardstown well last season and the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase will probably be his target at Leopardstown over Christmas." Following his stunning display a year ago, Flemenstar went on to be placed in the Lexus and the Irish Hennessy, but finished his season with a whimper at Aintree, when he returned home a sick horse. The eight-year-old has since switched trainers from Peter Casey to Tony Martin and although he did win on his comeback in Navan's Fortria Chase, his jumping was not as slick as it has been in the past. Martin said: "Of course it would be great if the result was the same as last year but it is a very good race. "He could finish third in it and still have run a cracker." While the bookmakers have Rubi Light as the big outsider of the four, he did win the race two years ago for trainer Robbie Hennessy. After a good first run of the campaign, when just over a length behind Sizing Europe, the eight-year-old returned a sick horse after the Clonmel Oil Chase. "He looks up against it as the other three are three of the best chasers in the country," said Hennessy. "But, if there are any flaws in them on the day, we'll be hoping to pick up the pieces. "He came back a sick horse from Clonmel. We knew something was wrong as he stopped too quickly and he had a slight lung infection. "He's in good order again now, though, and Barry Geraghty gets a good tune out of him. "I've no concern about the ground, it is just that he handles heavy better than the others. "Flemenstar likes to make it (the running), we like to be up there, and so does Arvika - they'll be taking no prisoners. "I just hope we run well and come back safe."

A floodlit all-weather track at Newcastle is a possibility after a wide-ranging consultation process was announced by owners Arena Racing Company (ARC) to consider development at the North East venue. Newcastle: Could play host to a new artificial track ARC said it hoped a planning application for the scheme can be lodged by January 31, 2014 and if successful racing on the new surface would commence in 2015. The current proposals are based around replacing the existing turf Flat track with an all-weather surface that would incorporate the only floodlit straight mile in the world. The existing turf jumps track would be unaffected, although the Flat race programme, if run on the all-weather, would increase the scope for an additional number of jumps fixtures to be staged. The development would still leave the track with an option to host its principal race, the John Smith's Northumberland Plate, on a turf surface. David Williamson, executive director at Newcastle, said: "We are very excited by these proposals. "We want to explain the benefits to the local community and Newcastle racecourse's many supporters. "We believe that should these plans proceed then they will enhance Newcastle racecourse as one of the pre-eminent racing and events venue in the UK." The proposals would also see investment made at the track including a general upgrading of facilities and a new layout of the pre-parade and saddling facilities. This announcement coincides with the start of a consultation period with local residents, businesses and stakeholders in and around the High Gosforth area. The track will be hosting a number of meetings where the proposals will be discussed and explained. Tony Kelly, managing director at ARC, said: "The development of an all-weather track in the north has long been an ambition of ours and this proposal would develop the best floodlit all-weather track in the world given the superb wide galloping track and our ability to incorporate a floodlit straight mile. "We have recently launched the ARC all-weather championship and that is an initial but very significant step in the move to improve the competitiveness and attractiveness of this important area of the sport. The increase in support and quality we have seen so far is extremely encouraging. "This track would fit superbly within the ARC all-weather championship and would give us the ability to possibly share finals day with Lingfield Park. "We hope to lodge a planning application in early 2014 once we have completed our consultation exercise." In addition, the ARC executive said it will be consulting widely with interested stakeholders within British racing, including the British Horseracing Authority with which ARC has had a number of initial discussions. Richard Fahey, who has been the leading trainer at Newcastle over the last few years, said: "We are desperately in need of an all-weather track up north. "I hoped one of the tracks nearer to Malton might have wanted to do it, but fair play to Newcastle. "Southwell has the best layout of the current tracks but the worst surface, some horses just don't act there. "There's talk of Wolverhampton being resurfaced and the other two tracks, Kempton and Lingfield, are too far away from us. "I find James Armstrong one of the best clerks in the country and he does a great job up there, but the last couple of years they haven't been helped by the weather. "We need it, there's no doubt about that, and I hope they get the layout right with a good, long straight. "I know Musselburgh were keen for an all-weather but that's too far from us as well. "Newcastle's location isn't ideal for us but I'm all for it, we'll definitely support it. "I'd be amazed it they didn't get permission." Armstrong said: "Given the increase in adverse weather in recent years, an all-weather track would mean we can stage some meetings we might otherwise have lost. "It would be a unique course, and would certainly be different from the standard sharp tracks we have now. "We'd have the option of staging one-mile straight races which would be a big benefit but, at this stage, it is all a long way off. "The jumps track would remain as it is and would in fact benefit as it wouldn't be having horses canter down on it all summer. "The surface we might use has still to be debated but Polytrack would be preferred at his stage. "All those details would need a great amount of discussion." Glasgow trainer Jim Goldie agrees with the need for an all-weather circuit in the north but would be sorry to see the demise of Newcastle's Flat turf track. "I think it would be a shame if one of the best turf tracks went that way. I'm sure they could find somewhere else to build an all-weather track in the north," he said. "It's more profitable to have all-weather as it's easier to maintain, but it's going to be a big circuit. "Kempton went the same way and it's a good all-weather track, but very few folk turn up for it. "We do need one in the north. I'm not condemning what they're doing, but Catterick would be more obvious to me. They have space for it and it's just a couple of miles off the A1."

The Queen has been named Owner of the Year for 2013 by the Racehorse Owners Association in recognition of her first success in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and her unparalleled commitment and contribution to the sport of horse racing over more than 60 years. The Queen: Owner Of The Year 2013 The accolade came on Thursday evening at the 32nd annual Horseracing Awards, this year sponsored by Weatherbys Hamilton, at London's InterContinental Hotel. The award was collected on Her Majesty's behalf by her racing manager John Warren and his daughter Susannah. Lingfield Park, 6 December 2013
12.45, third race
The Stewards noted that ELECTRIC QATAR, drawn 7, had anticipated the start and barged the gate at the same moment as the race had been started, thereby enabling the gelding to break quickly. Being satisfied that it was not caused through a faulty action of the starting stalls, they took no further action.
1.55, fifth race
The Stewards noted that MUNSARIM (IRE), unplaced, had interfered with ARCHIE RICE (USA), unplaced, which then interfered with ZAEEM, unplaced, turning into the home straight, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
3.05, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference just inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that KAKATOSI, unplaced, ridden by Shane Kelly, had interfered with JAY BEE BLUE, unplaced, ridden by Tom Queally, which then interfered with COMMANCHE, unplaced, ridden by Shelley Birkett. The Stewards found Kelly in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he made a manoeuvre to his right. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Friday 20 December 2013.
3.35, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that AZABITMOUR (FR), ridden by JOHN FAHY, refused to race. They interviewed John Best, the trainer and the Starter. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the start the Stewards informed the trainer that future similar behaviour may result in the gelding being reported to the British Horseracing Authority.
06/12/2013
Exeter, 6 December 2013
2.05, fourth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MAJOR MALARKEY (IRE), ridden by Sam Twiston Davies, and trained by Nigel Twiston Davies, compared with its previous run at Cheltenham on 15 November 2013, where the gelding finished last of 10, beaten 43 lengths.. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding appeared suited by the fitting of a visor for the first time. They ordered MAJOR MALARKEY (IRE) to be routine tested.
06/12/2013
Wolverhampton, 6 December 2013
5.30, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference around the two-furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that MOJO BEAR, placed second, ridden by Josh Baudains, had interfered with LUCY BEE, placed third, ridden by Andrew Mullen. The Stewards found Baudains in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to drift left towards the rail. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BERKELEY STREET (USA), ridden by Graham Lee and trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, compared with the gelding’s previous run at Catterick on 19 October 2013, where it finished tenth of 12, beaten 77 lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative, that BERKELEY STREET (USA) appreciated the all-weather surface and had benefited from being fitted with cheek-pieces for the first time. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
6.30, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that CAPTAIN GEE, unplaced, ridden by Tom Eaves, had interfered with SWEET ANGELICA, placed third, ridden by Graham Lee. The Stewards found Eaves in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to drift right-handed. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, KINKOHYO, ridden by Luke Morris and trained by Bryan Smart, compared with the filly’s previous run at Wolverhampton on 30 November 2013, where she finished last of 6, beaten 6 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that KINKOHYO started better and had progressed since her previous run.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
GERARD BUTLER - DISCIPLINARY PANEL RESULT AND REASONS
1. Gerard Butler
1.1 The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) enquired into the case of Gerard Butler, a licensed trainer, on 18 and 19 November 2013. The Panel comprised Matthew Lohn (Chairman), Hopper Cavendish and Nicky Vigors. Mr Butler had been charged with seven breaches of the Rules of Racing following positive test results being reported for the anabolic steroid stanozolol in blood samples taken from nine horses in his yard.
1.2 The charges considered by the Panel were as follows:
1. Whether breaches of Rule (C)50 and/or Rule (C)55 of the Rules of Racing have been committed by Gerard Butler, by virtue of the samples taken from all or any of the following horses (being horses in the care or control of Butler) on 20 February 2013 at Egerton House Stables, Cambridge Road, Newmarket, Suffolk testing positive for the Prohibited Substance stanozolol:
(a) A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA) (b) FLEMISH SCHOOL (c) AZRAG (USA) (d) LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA) (e) RAINBOW BEAUTY (f) ZAIN EAGLE (g) ZAIN QUEEN (h) ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) (i) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA).
2. Whether Gerard Butler is in breach of Rule (C)13 of the Rules of Racing by virtue of his failure to keep a record of ‘Treatments’ for all or any of the following horses which included the information listed in Rules (C)13.2.1 to 13.2.6 for such Treatments:
(a) The administration of stanozolol to A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA) on 29 December 2012
(b) The administration of stanozolol to ZAIN EAGLE on a date unknown but said by Butler to have been in late 2012
(c) The administration of stanozolol to ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) on a date unknown but said by Butler to have been in late 2012 or early 2013
(d) The administration of stanozolol to AZRAG (USA) on a date unknown but said by Butler to have been in late 2012
(e) The administration of stanozolol to PRINCE ALZAIN (USA) on a date unknown but said by Butler to have been in late 2012
3. Whether Gerard Butler is in breach of Rule (C)13 of the Rules of Racing by virtue of his failure to keep a record of ‘Treatments’, which included the information listed in Rules (C)13.2.1 to 13.2.6 for such Treatments for the following horses under his care:
A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA) FLEMISH SCHOOL AZRAG (USA) LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA) RAINBOW BEAUTY ZAIN EAGLE ZAIN QUEEN ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA)
4. Whether Gerard Butler breached Rule (A)30 of the Rules of Racing by acting in a manner that was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and/or good reputation of horseracing in Great Britain by administering or causing or allowing to be administered stanozolol, a Prohibited Substance, to all or any of the following horses under his care
(a) AZRAG (USA) (b) ZAIN EAGLE (c) ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) (d) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA)
other than (1) by a veterinary surgeon, and (2) on veterinary advice for the appropriate treatment of an underlying medical condition in each horse.
5. Whether by administering intra-articular injections himself to all or any of the following horses
(a) AZRAG (USA) (b) ZAIN EAGLE (c) ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) (d) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA)
despite him not being a qualified or registered veterinary surgeon, Gerard Butler acted in a manner that was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and/or good reputation of horseracing in Great Britain and thereby breached Rule (A)30 of the Rules of Racing.
6. Whether by administering intra-articular injections himself to all or any of the following horses
(a) AZRAG (USA) (b) ZAIN EAGLE (c) ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) (d) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA)
despite him not being a qualified or registered veterinary surgeon, Gerard Butler failed to conduct his business of training racehorses with reasonable care and skill and/or failed to act with due regard to the interests of horses under his care, and thereby breached Rule (C)22 of the Rules of Racing.
7. Whether by administering intra-articular injections himself to all or any of the following horses
(a) AZRAG (USA) (b) ZAIN EAGLE (c) ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) (d) PRINCE ALZAIN (USA)
despite him not being a qualified or registered veterinary surgeon, Gerard Butler failed to take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and welfare of horses under his care and thereby breached Rule (C)27 of the Rules of Racing.
1.3 At the outset of the enquiry, Butler made a number of admissions. Some of the admissions were qualified with submissions seeking to lessen his culpability for the admitted breach. The admissions were as follows:-
Charge 1 – Admitted.
Charge 2 – Admitted; alongside the admission, Butler asserted that he had reasonably expected his veterinary surgeon, Tim Hawthorne, to record into the yard's medication book the administration of Sungate.
Charge 3 – Admitted; again Butler asserted that he had reasonably expected the veterinary surgeons who visited the yard to enter into his yard's medication book details of the administration of those drugs for which they were responsible.
Charges 4 & 5 – Admitted; the admission was again qualified. Butler denied that it was wrong per say to administer Sungate since it was, in his view, for a therapeutic purpose. He acknowledged that a veterinary surgeon should have administered the drug and explained that he had only administered the drug himself to save money believing that the owner would be unlikely to approve the cost of the veterinary administration.
Charges 6 & 7 – These charges were not admitted.
Following Butler's evidence, Counsel on his behalf admitted charges 6 & 7. From the evidence it was also clear that the basis upon which Charges 4 & 5 were qualified could no longer be maintained. This matter is set out in more detail below.
2. Background
2.1 On 20 February 2013, Dr Lynn Hillyer, a Veterinary Advisor (Medication Control) to the BHA, visited Butler's yard. The visit was undertaken in accordance with BHA policy for 'testing in training' visits to yards where there has been a post-race positive. One of Butler's horses had tested positive for morphine in 2012 when running at Great Yarmouth.
2.2 The visit was conducted by Veterinary Officer, Tony Welsh, and Race Day Integrity Officer, Sarah Duncan. 28 blood samples were obtained and a copy of Butler's medication records was taken for review. In Mr Welsh's report following the visit he noted 'Gerard Butler and his staff were a little taken aback on our arrival and I wonder whether he had fully grasped the fact that there would be a T in T visit after his positive in the summer. He and his staff were most amenable and very open'.
2.3 The following day Dr Hillyer reviewed the medication records from Butler's yard. The last entry in the record was dated 13 February 2013. Examination of the record revealed the administration of Sungate (together with a number of other drugs) to a filly, FLEMISH SCHOOL on 3 December 2012. The records identified the person authorising the treatment as Butler and the person administering the treatment as Mr Hawthorne, a vet at Rossdales Equine Hospital. Dr Hillyer cross referenced the date with Butler's Horses in Training records at Weatherbys and was able to determine that the administration of Sungate appeared to have taken place whilst the horse was out of training – the Weatherbys’ records indicated that the filly had been taken out of training on 1 December 2012 and then returned to training on 3 January 2013. Dr Hillyer was concerned by the administration of Sungate whilst FLEMISH SCHOOL had been under Butler's care and control. Sungate contains stanozolol, an anabolic steroid and its use in horses under the care and control of a trainer is banned by the Rules of Racing.
2.4 On the morning of 26 February 2013, the HFL Laboratory informed Dr Hillyer that they had a likely stanozolol screening finding for a different horse LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA). Dr Hillyer visited Butler's yard later that morning with Race Day Integrity Officer, Stewart Shilston. They wanted to re-sample FLEMISH SCHOOL and LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA) and establish the facts regarding the administration of stanozolol. At the visit, both horses were re-sampled and Dr Hillyer met with Butler.
2.5 Butler told Dr Hillyer that both horses had been treated with Sungate and that LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA) had been treated while the filly had been in training. Dr Hillyer advised Butler that he should not allow any further horses that were in training or under his care and control to be treated with Sungate. She also warned him that there appeared to be no entry in his medication records showing that Sungate or stanozolol had been administered to LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA). This was a further potential breach of the Rules of Racing. In discussions with Dr Hillyer, Butler volunteered details of further treatments that had been administered to his horses that had not been recorded in the medication record; five horses – LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA), FLEMISH SCHOOL, A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA), ZAIN QUEEN and RAINBOW DUTY had all been treated with Sungate on 16 February 2013. He also told Dr Hillyer that FLEMISH SCHOOL and A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA) had received doses of Sungate previous to these administrations.
2.6 Butler told Dr Hillyer that he did not know that Sungate was prohibited and could not be used for horses in training. He also informed Dr Hillyer that LITTLE BLACK BOOK (IRE), a horse that he had previously had in training had 'run on it' during 2012.
2.7 The BHA subsequently received additional pages updating Butler's Medication book. The updated pages included entries for 16 February 2013 for Sungate administration to LA BELLE EPOQUE (USA), FLEMISH SCHOOL, A TOUCH OF FASHION (USA), ZAIN QUEEN and RAINBOW BEAUTY. The additional entries recorded that the drugs had been administered by Mr Hawthorne and authorised by Butler. This was the second update to the medication records received by the BHA. The first update was made before Butler's admissions regarding Sungate and at that point the Sungate administrations were not included in the additional entries.
2.8 On 27 February 2013, the HFL Laboratory record reported screening findings of stanozolol in nine samples. In addition to the horses which Butler identified as receiving Sungate, four additional horses in his yard tested positive for stanozolol and namely AZRAG (USA), ZAIN EAGLE, ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) and PRINCE ALZAIN (USA).
3. Gerard Butler's Interview
3.1 Butler was interviewed in the presence of his solicitor on 9 April 2013. During the course of the interview, Butler explained that Sungate had been administered by Mr Hawthorne to a number of his horses under his care or control. Butler admitted that he had also administered Sungate himself to the four additional horses which had tested positive.
4. Gerard Butler's Medication Records
4.1 Dr Hillyer's review of Butler's medication records demonstrated two distinct areas of concern. Alongside issues relating to failure to record the administration of stanozolol, wider concerns were raised as to other treatments (other than anabolic steroids) which had been given to the horses under Butler's care and control and which should have been recorded in the medication records.
4.2 Dr Hillyer obtained copies of the veterinary surgeons' histories for each of the nine horses which tested positive for stanozolol. This confirmed that five horses had been administered Sungate by the veterinary surgeons. There was nothing in the medication records to reflect the administration of Sungate (or stanozolol) to ZAIN EAGLE, ZAIN SPIRIT (USA), AZRAG (USA) and PRINCE ALZAIN (USA). Dr Hillyer also identified a total of 81 other treatments which should have been recorded in Butler's medication records in accordance with the Rules of Racing.
Evidence before the Disciplinary Panel
5. Medication Records
5.1 Before the Panel, Butler acknowledged that he was aware of the requirement to keep detailed records of any medication given to his horses. He agreed that his medication book was deficient. He did not acknowledge full culpability for this failing though and asserted that he had an agreement with his yard veterinary surgeon, Mr Hawthorne, to ensure that he recorded any medication given to a horse in the medication record. Butler acknowledged that he did not review the medication record regularly and indeed on the 20 February 2013 he had no idea as to how inaccurate the medication record was.
5.2 The Panel also received evidence from Mr Hawthorne and Claire Mackay, who worked as a secretary and work rider for Butler. Mr Hawthorne, in an email sent to the Panel, confirmed that there was no established role for him to fulfil the duty for Butler of completing the medication book. He explained that it was located in an office which was locked if Butler, or his secretary was not in the yard. He acknowledged that when the medication book was available he would sometimes write details of the treatment in it. If he was unable to access the office, he would relay details of the treatment by text message or telephone call in order for Butler to be able to complete the book. Mr Hawthorne said he asked Butler to move the medication book to a more consistently accessible location after the issues which arose in February 2013 but this did not happen.
5.3 Claire Mackay gave evidence before the Panel. She confirmed that the medication book was locked in the office. She explained that she rode out in the morning and was not at the yard in the afternoon. Because of her routine, she would not regularly see Mr Hawthorne when he was at the yard. She believed that if Mr Hawthorne came to the yard and gave the horse something, Butler would be informed. She said that after the visits from the BHA in February 2013, she does now chase more to try and get the medications properly recorded in the book.
5.4 The Panel concluded in the light of this evidence that Butler had failed to comply with the Rules of Racing in respect of his medication record responsibilities and moreover, he was culpable for that failure. Any assertion that the yard veterinary surgeon was responsible for the completion of the medical record was not credible. There was no system at the yard to ensure that the medication record was kept up to date.
5.5 There was some dispute before the Panel as to whether some of the medication listed by the BHA in its schedule of drugs that should have been included in the medication records was correct. The Panel accepted submissions on behalf of Butler that it was not necessary to record Amikacin and in consequence the number of omissions in the drug schedule was not 81 entries but 77 entries.
6. Stanozolol
6.1 Butler was questioned before the Panel about where he purchased Sungate for the four horses AZRAG (USA), ZAIN EAGLE, ZAIN SPIRIT (USA) and PRINCE ALZAINE (USA). which he personally administered. Prior to giving evidence before the Panel, the BHA understood, following the information provided by Butler at his interview, that Butler had purchased stanozolol in the form of the licensed preparation Sungate. Despite being asked on a number of occasions prior to the hearing where he had purchased the drug from, no evidence had been forthcoming from Butler on this point.
6.2 It was only when questioned at the hearing that Butler revealed for the first time that he had purchased the stanozolol online from the UK Steroids Pharmacy. He did not in fact purchase Sungate but a preparation called Rexogin which contained stanozolol at a concentration that was ten times that of Sungate. The UK Steroids Pharmacy website is directed at body builders and made no reference to the veterinary administration of the drugs. The page on the website advertising Rexogin included the following quote: "..stanozolol is one of the favourite steroids in general, as confirmed by many positive doping cases. Stanozolol, for example was one of the substances which enabled Ben Johnson to achieve his magic sprints"
6.3 Butler admitted buying five boxes of the drug, each containing ten vials. He told the Panel that he decided to pay for the drug out of his own personal funds and did not make cross reference on the bank transfer when paying for the drug to mark the transfer to the Anabolic Pharmacy as a yard expense. Consequently his accountant did not recognise the expense and deduct the payment as a running cost of the yard. Butler explained to the Panel that the reason he purchased the stanozolol personally was because he did not believe the owner of the horses to whom he intended to administer the drug would pay for it.
6.4 The Panel did not accept this explanation. It concluded that the only reason why Butler paid for the stanozolol personally and did not claim it as a deductable yard expense was that he wanted nobody to know about the purchase.
6.5 The Panel was extremely concerned by Butler's revelation that the Rexogin preparation of stanozolol that he purchased was ten times the concentration of Sungate. Butler confirmed that he injected the fetlock and knee joints of the affected horses on two occasions in December and January. He admitted that he took no veterinary advice before giving the concentrated stanozolol. He admitted knowing that veterinary surgeons are cautioned not to exceed the recommended dose of Sungate and that he did not know of anyone else who had given Rexogin in this way before.
6.6 Butler admitted that for each of the four horses, they had not been given a full veterinary assessment and no other treatments had been tried by the veterinary surgeons prior to the administration of stanozolol. Moreover, Mr Butler admitted that he had allowed the four horses to be subsequently treated by the veterinary surgeons at Rossdales without them having any knowledge of his prior administration of Rexogin.
6.7 In the Panel's view, Butler's actions in giving Rexogin were an appalling failure to act in the best interests of the horses in his care
7. The Intra-Articular Injections
7.1 Butler was questioned at the hearing as to his previous experience of administering drugs to horses. He acknowledged that he had never given an intra-articular injection to a horse before injecting the four horses with Rexogin. He said he had been present at hundreds of such injections. He told the Panel he knew the steps that were taken having witnessed other veterinary surgeons give injections and felt able to undertake the procedure without training or professional supervision. He accepted that he knew what he was doing was wrong but asserted that the primary reason he did not use a veterinary surgeon was in order to try and keep the veterinary bills down for a particularly difficult owner. He explained that he sedated the horses prior to the injection and asked junior stable staff to help him. He acknowledged that he did not ask his senior stable staff or head lad to help him hold the horses. He accepted that he was not used to dealing with the glass vials of drugs and found them difficult to open and broke some vials and spilt Rexogin from others that he used.
7.2 The Panel concluded that Butler's behaviour in administering the injections was consistent with the underhand and covert manner in which he purchased the drug. It also noted that Butler's actions were in breach of Section 19 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 which makes it a criminal offence for unqualified persons to practice veterinary surgery.
7.3 Butler's evidence revealed an appalling dereliction of his duty as a licensed trainer. By his own admission, Butler kept no clear financial records or any invoice from the purchase of the Rexogin, he did not have the horses properly assessed prior to their treatment and made no recording in his medication records having injected the horses. He used junior stable staff to help him who would not question his actions and deceived his senior stable staff and kept from them important information about the treatment given to the horses.
7.4 In addition, notwithstanding the therapeutically uncertain effects of the high doses of stanozolol, he allowed the four horses to continue to be treated by the veterinary surgeons who had no knowledge of the concurrent use of Rexogin.
7.5 In the Panel's view, Butler's actions were an appalling breach of his duty to look after the interests of the horses in his care and amounted to conduct that was seriously prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of horseracing in Great Britain.
8. Penalties
8.1 In considering the question of penalties, the Panel considered that the actions of Butler in essence constituted a single course of conduct over a period of time. He disregarded the Rules of Racing regarding the use of anabolic steroids in horses in his care. He also disregarded statutory law in respect of the administration of Rexogin to four horses and more generally failed to keep proper medication records of the treatment. The Panel has approached the question of the penalty to reflect this state of affairs.
8.2 In the Panel's view the most significant and serious matters for which Butler falls to be censured are his breaches of Rules (C)50, (A)30 and (C)22/(C)27 in administering unlicensed preparations of stanozolol to four horses in his care. Allowing the administration of Sungate under the care and control of a veterinary surgeon is a serious matter as is the failure to keep up-to-date and accurate medication records; but these matters are considerably less serious in the Panel's view when compared to the covert acquisition of a non-veterinary formulation of high dose steroid and its subsequent intra-articular administration to horses.
8.3 Butler could not be given any credit by the Panel for assisting the BHA. He sought to absolve himself of responsibility in respect of his medication record responsibilities; trying to place them upon his veterinary surgeon and secretary. And until the day of the hearing, he failed to reveal the source and nature of the stanozolol which he personally obtained.
8.4 In the Panel's view his actions were a gross failure to look after the best interests of the four horses in his care – especially those which received Rexogin. The Rexogin stanozolol preparation was administered in concentrations and with a frequency that is untested in veterinary science and he allowed his yard veterinary surgeon to give further medication to those four horses without knowing of the underlying Rexogin treatment. His conduct ignored the statutory framework of medicines control and veterinary legislation as well as the Rules of Racing.
8.5 As the veterinary surgeon who gave evidence on Butler's behalf acknowledged, the four horses were not damaged but this was 'more by luck than any judgement'. Butler's cavalier approach to his ability to give an intra articulation was a particular concern to the Panel. It is simply not appropriate for a trainer to say that he is able to undertake an invasive veterinary procedure on the basis that he had seen veterinary surgeons performing the procedure hundreds of times before.
8.6 Butler also created unnecessary risks for the horses in the un-licensed source of the drug he obtained. He had no way of knowing the true source and nature of the drug he purchased over the internet.
8.7 In reviewing the Guide to Procedures and Penalties 2013 the Panel reminded itself that a breach of Rule (A)30, acting "prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing" carries a range of 1 month to 3 years penalty with an entry point of 3 months. The penalty range for a breach of Rules (C)22/(C)27 for Neglect over a period of time – very poor husbandry is 6 months to 3 years with an entry point of 9 months withdrawal of licence. The Panel determined that in all the circumstances of this case, Butler should be disqualified for a period of 5 years from Thursday 5 December 2013 until 4 December 2018 inclusive. This reflects the gravity of the conduct of Butler's behaviour. A single dose of Rexogin injected by Butler would have merited at least a 3 month suspension; Butler, by his own admission, illegally administered this drug on 16 different occasions. This was truly appalling behaviour from a licensed trainer.
8.8 The Panel also considered the issue of a penalty for the breach of Rule (C)55 in respect of the Rexogin and Sungate. The Panel reminded itself that the breach here carries a range of 1 month to 10 years with an entry point of 6 months disqualification. The Panel considered that in respect of the four horses receiving Rexogin and five receiving Sungate, a penalty of 5 years disqualification is appropriate. These drugs should not have been given to the horses. In particular the covert administration of Rexogin was of concern. Owners should be able to expect that horses under the care of licensed trainers will not be administered illegal drugs which are absolutely prohibited by the Rules of Racing. This was a serious and repeated breach of the Rules by an experienced trainer using different preparations of stanozolol which was absolutely prohibited from use in horses in his care. In the circumstances of the case, the Panel considered this sanction should run concurrently with that outlined above for the breaches of Rules (A)30 and (C)22/(C)27.
8.9 In reaching this penalty the Panel reminded itself of the financial concerns that Butler said was clouding his judgement at the time, and acknowledged that prior to these events he was a man of good character. The Panel also carefully read and took into account the numerous testimonials submitted on behalf of Butler which repeatedly gave testament to his good conduct and excellence as a trainer. The Panel has been mindful of the effect the disqualification will have on Butler's stable staff.
8.10 Finally the Panel is mindful of the effects of disqualification and the need to relocate those horses currently residing in Butler's yard. The Panel directs that Butler, notwithstanding his disqualified status should have a period of 48 hours to arrange the relocation of his horses.

ODDSCHECKER.
Sprinter Sacre isn't at Sandown toay but it's still a good card. The Henry VIII novice chase is possibly the first such competitive race run in Britain this season, with Grandouet forced to return to his Robben Island due to political skullduggery. The one we want to be on is Taquin De Seuil, who has made a fine start to his chasing career. We would have been worried about the drop back to 2m but he essentially outsprinted Oscar Whisky last time and Jonjo O'Neill has been hugely positive. 7/2 makes lots of appeal; he should be favourite and will be charging up that hill.

15:35 Saturday 7th December Racing Tips - 07/12/2013
Just the one today and I confess to not having been through the card at Sandown, due to being in France, but thought Bradley might head for this after his run at Cheltenham. He went right a little at times that day, and has done before, and this track may just suit him that little bit better, though he has won at both previously. One thing he does want is good ground and that is a given with the forecast dry and some decent times yesterday. The extra half a furlong should be another positive given how good he looked after jumping the last at Cheltenham. Currently 8/1, the yard has been short of winners of late but is still sending out some decent places and Conor Shoemark is a big plus as an apprentice well worth his claim. He was very well supported last time in what was technically a tougher race and is only raised 1lb, not enough for Godsmejudge (who is unchanged) to reverse the placings. Sandown 15.35 - Bradley 1pt e/w

The Fugue, caught close home in the Breeder's Cup Turf last month, seeks a perfect end to the year in the 12-furlong LONGINES Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday, December 8. The Fugue: Favourite for Hong Kong Vase The four-year-old Dansili filly flew into Hong Kong during the early hours of Monday, December 2, and was, along with the Jeremy Noseda-trained Grandeur (LONGINES Hong Kong Cup), the last of the 28 overseas challengers to arrive for the four Group One International races. John Gosden, her trainer, saw The Fugue do some exercise on the turf course at Sha Tin this morning (Friday, December 6) with her regular rider William Buick on board. He said: "She has picked up well. It was a long journey - from London to Frankfurt, where she was on the ground for a time, before coming on to Hong Kong. "To that extent, she was a little quiet when she got here. Her temperature was good and her blood was good, which is important - she was just a little tired and quiet and not eating particularly well. "But The Fugue has picked up nicely in the last 40 hours - I am really happy with her. She is eating well now and she just had an easy canter on the turf track yesterday and a slightly stronger one today. "I am very pleased with her - there is a lot of vitality about her which is a good thing. "We had hoped to come to Hong Kong last year which she started out by running early on in the 1,000 Guineas. She has done well this year when starting to race in June at Royal Ascot and winning the Yorkshire Oaks and the Irish Champion Stakes before going to California. "She has been west a long way and now come east to Hong Kong, being on both sides of the Pacific. To that extent, she has done a lot of travelling but at the same time she has a good mind on her and taken it well. "She loves top of the ground and does not like conditions when it rains a lot and goes soft. So I think the surface will suit her very well. Distance-wise, a mile and a half is OK - we had strongly considered the Cup (10 furlongs). I think the Cup is a fantastic race but if you get an outside draw, it can be quite compromising. "We just felt if we got an outside draw, we would prefer to be in the mile and a half race. The draw of three is fine - it is no problem and gives time to get sorted. "William Buick knows her very well - he has ridden her on the last two mornings and in lots of races. She is a filly who the ground has gone against a couple of times, racing luck has gone against her a couple of times, and she got knocked over in the Oaks, otherwise she would have won that race as a three-year-old. "The absence of pace would be a concern for everybody - when you come to run a mile and a half you tend to come to run a mile and a half. If someone is on the front-end and wants to slow it down, that's their business - they are allowed to that. Being an invitational race, there are no pacemakers in here. "I think the jocks will be aware of the pace. The Fugue has a very nice turn of foot so to that extend she does not require a crazy end-to-end gallop. "Everybody wants a good gallop so let's hope that occurs. We have a filly who is happy at a mile and a quarter and happy at a mile and a half. As long as we get a clean run, that is all that matters. A fast-run mile and a half would not bother me at all." The Fugue, the 6/4 favourite with Sky Bet, faces 13 rivals at 2pm (local time - 6am UK time), including the second, third, fourth, fifth and 11th in the two-mile Emirates Melbourne Cup - Red Cadeaux, Mount Athos, Simenon, Dandino and Dunaden - as well as other European hopes, Investec Derby third Galileo Rock, lightly-raced French filly Ebiyza and three German-trained challengers Feuerblitz, Seismos and Nymphea.

View from connections ahead of Sunday's Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase at Cork. Willie Mullins: Will learn from Sunday's race regarding Twinlight Twinlight has the chance to prove he is up to tackling the best company when he goes for the Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase at Cork on Sunday. Should he pass the Grade Two test with finesse, then trainer Willie Mullins could step him up to the Grade One Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting. "He's developed into a very capable two-mile chaser. Depending on how he gets on, he could go to Leopardstown at Christmas," said Mullins. "He's got a lower mark over hurdles so we could look at switching him back at some stage." Noel Meade is hoping Realt Dubh will not be inconvenienced by the drop from two and three-quarter miles. "He's getting on a bit now and while he is in good shape, two miles is probably a bit on the sharp side for him now," said Meade. "We could do with a bit of rain, also - we're hopeful of a good run but it looks a competitive race. The County Meath trainer feels Dylan Ross has something to find but his worth his place in the line-up. Meade said: "Dylan Ross is hard to place as he wants two miles but we said we'd let him take his chance in this. "Robbie Power has been riding him in his last few starts and it made sense to keep him on Dylan Ross and let Robbie Colgan, who has been riding well for me, ride Realt Dubh." Days Hotel defeated Realt Dubh to lift this race 12 months ago and made a pleasing seasonal debut when only beaten a length and a quarter by Flemenstar in the Fortria Chase at Navan. "He ran well the last day when the ground was quite quick for him but he stayed on well," said his trainer Henry De Bromhead. "He seems in good from and you'd be hoping he's in the same form as he was when he won the race last year. I'd prefer more rain though as the softer the ground the better for him."

Jockey Barry Geraghty feel Cash And Go has a big chance of going one better than last year in Sunday's StanJames.com Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday. Cash And Go: Fancied to go well Second last season behind Tom George's Olofi, Nicky Henderson's charge rather lost his form thereafter. However, Geraghty feels Cash And Go has the ability to be a major player once more off the same handicap mark as in the race 12 months ago. "It was 12 months ago that Cash And Go made his reappearance in the race and ran a blinder to finish second to Olofi off a mark 141," Geraghty said in his www.athteraces.com blog. "He never really recovered his form after he unseated me next time out in the Ladbroke at Ascot in December and because of that he's on the same mark as a year ago. "He's certainly as good now as he was then and although this is always one of the hardest handicaps of the season to win - and that includes here in March - I'm very hopeful of a good outcome. "I'd have plenty of respect for others in the field including Pine Creek who won well at Ascot on his reappearance and I can see one that finished some way behind him that day, Court Minstrel, leaving that form well behind." Despite Geraghty feeling Court Minstrel may improve, trainer Evan Williams expects Court Minstrel to struggle off his current mark. The six-year-old failed to make any impact on his seasonal debut at Ascot in a valuable handicap won by the reopposing Pine Creek. He was saddled with top weight that day and was lining up on a 8lb higher mark than when he last ran in Scotland. Williams feels he has little chance of getting involved here off that same mark of 149. "He's got no chance off that mark, he's got too much weight," said Williams. "I've said it before, and I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he can win off that rating. "The difference on Sunday is he'll love the ground, though, compared to Ascot." David O'Meara is hoping Ifandbutwhynot, sent off favourite for the County Hurdle in March, will improve for his first run of the season which saw him finish third behind Harry Fry's Karinga Dancer at Aintree. "It was a nice run from him at Aintree - he often comes on for his first start of the season - and we are happy with him," said O'Meara. "He progressed last season and he was running well in the Scottish Champion Hurdle before he fell. We are hopeful he can continue his progression this year. We have always thought a bit of him and we will know a lot more about how competitive his mark is on Sunday." Alan King wants to see a bit more from last season's Grade One-winning mare L'Unique. She made her return in a Listed race against her own sex at Wetherby but appeared to blow up before the last hurdle behind John Quinn's Cockney Sparrow. "I was in two minds as to whether to run L'Unique in the Greatwood Hurdle, but she has seemed in good form at home this week so we have decided to give it a go and, hopefully, she will improve on her comeback run at Wetherby," the Barbury Castle handler told his website, www.alankingracing.co.uk. The top weight is Get Me Out Of Here, who has been second in three different races at the Festival but is without a win since October 2012. John Quinn runs both Kashmir Peak, who has improved on the Flat in the summer, and Calculated Risk. Irish interest is provided by Flaxen Flare, Rawnaq, Thomas Edison, Kalann, Redera and Enchanted Forest. Paul Nicholls' Sametegal was a good juvenile, while David PIpe has two interesting runners in Tanerko Emery and Dell' Arca.

Aintree, 7 December 2013
12.00, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SPLASH OF GINGE, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies and trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, compared with its previous run at Carlisle on 3 November 2013 where the gelding finished fourth, beaten 26 ¼ lengths. They noted the trainer’s representative’s explanation that the gelding was suited by the drop back in trip and the better going.
2.05, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Sam Twiston-Davies, the rider of BABY RUN (FR), placed second, after the last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended TWISTON-DAVIES for 2 days as follows: Sunday 22 and Friday 27 December.
07/12/2013
Sandown Park, 7 December 2013
2.25, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Leighton Aspell, the rider of the winner, DEEP TROUBLE (IRE), on the run to the line. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip in an incorrect place. The Stewards cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Daryl Jacob, the rider of URBAIN DE SIVOLA (FR), placed second, from the second last flight of hurdles. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Jacob for 2 days as follows: Sunday 22 and Friday 27 December 2013.
3.00, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into why MAD MOOSE (IRE), ridden by Dave Crosse, had refused to race. They interviewed Nigel Twiston-Davies, the trainer. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start, and noting that the gelding had also refused to race at Aintree on 5 April, Cheltenham on 14 March and York on 25 May 2013, the Stewards referred MAD MOOSE (IRE)’s behaviour to the British Horseracing Authority.
07/12/2013
Wetherby, 7 December 2013
3.25, seventh race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of TARAAKUM (FR), trained by Andrew Crook, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £280, this being his second offence within 12 months.
07/12/2013
Chepstow, 7 December 2013
12.25, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of MORITO DU BERLAIS (FR), ridden by Nick Scholfield and trained by Paul Nicholls, which appeared to be tenderly ridden in the closing stages to finish fifth, beaten 32 ½ lengths. They interviewed the rider and David Pritchard, representing the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to ride the gelding in a handy position, get him settled and make sure he got round. He added that MORITO DU BERLAIS (FR) ran keenly in the early stages, began to hang left in the home straight and became tired after the second last. He therefore felt it prudent to keep a good hold of the gelding. The trainer’s representative stated that MORITO DU BERLAIS (FR) is a nervous sort at home. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
07/12/2013
Wolverhampton, 7 December 2013
6.20, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference in the final stages. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, GEORGE FENTON, ridden by Hayley Turner, had interfered with STRONG MAN, placed second, ridden by Graham Gibbons. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved GEORGE FENTON’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jimmy Quinn, the rider of HELLBENDER (IRE), placed third, three furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Quinn for 2 days as follows: Saturday 21 and Thursday 26 December 2013.
7.50, fourth race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of GOD’S SPEED (IRE), trained by Rae Guest, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £280, this being his second offence within 12 months.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the start. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that CHOICE OF DESTINY, placed fourth, ridden by William Carson, had interfered with GOD’S SPEED (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Chris Catlin, who in turn interfered with ROCKED THE BOAT, unplaced, ridden by Alfie Warwick. The Stewards found Carson in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred to his left causing interference. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Saturday 21 and Thursday 26 December 2013.
8.50, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference approaching the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that CORNCOCKLE, placed third, ridden by Graham Gibbons, had interfered with WEE JEAN, placed fourth, ridden by George Baker. They found the interference was accidental and had improved CORNCOCKLE’s placing. They placed CORNCOCKLE, fourth and WEE JEAN, third.
The Stewards noted that ALFIE LUNETE (IRE), unplaced, had interfered with POUND PIECE (IRE), unplaced, just after the start, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

He is in good order and we are obviously looking forward to running him. He has pleased us at home in everything her has done, but until we get him out there on the track and get the ball rolling we don't need to talk him up any more than the form has done for him. 07:50 Sunday 8th December Racing Tips - 08/12/2013
I think and desperately hope The Fugue will win out in Sha Tin but am not sure she can be backed with any real confidence. The trouble is, she loses races that she really should win and cannot always be deemed 'unlucky'. A filly that can be deemed unlucky on her beaten efforts this year is Sky Lantern and I think there should be less between her and French super mare Moonlight Cloud than there is in the market currently. Moonlight Cloud is an unbelievable mare and the way she won last time out was one of the most impressive victories you'll see. However, I worry about her over a mile on very quick ground, the conditions in which she tends to be least convincing. She is yet to win on faster than good and this could set up for the Hannon 3 year old at 11/2. 3 year olds do not have the best record in this but have won it before and conditions will be just right for her. Sha Tin 07.50 - Sky Lantern 1pt win
Over at Warwick this afternoon, George Nympton looks a solid bet to retain the race he won last year off the same mark at <7/1. He has struggled since but that has been up in class, abroad, and at varying trips. He now returns to course and distance with which he has a 100% record, including with Noel Fehily on top. He has won on both good and soft but I fancy he wants it the sounder the better underfoot so today's conditions should pose no problem. The yard has also started hitting form with a few recent winners and big priced places sent out. Big danger will be Take Of Shoc's who also appears to go on any ground and he romped to victory a month ago at Ffos Las. 7lb could be a lenient rise but it wasn't much of a race that day with only 4 showing up and a pretty slow time, even considering heavy ground. Much better was his win on penultimate start but he is 13lb higher now and 7/2 doesn't make all that much appeal. Warwick 13.40 - George Nympton 1pt e/w

Warwick, 8 December 2013
12.40, first race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of SANTO DE LUNE (FR), trained by Dan Skelton, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £140.
1.40, third race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, UN ANJOU (FR), ridden by Aidan Coleman and trained by David Dennis, compared with the gelding’s previous run at Chepstow on 21 November 2013, where it finished sixth of 10, beaten approximately 25 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that UN ANJOU (FR) was better suited by the drop in trip, quicker ground and being fitted with cheek-pieces for the first time.
08/12/2013
Kelso, 8 December 2013
12.25, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TOUGH TRADE, ridden by Henry Brooke and trained by Chris Grant, compared with its previous run at Newcastle on 15 November 2013 where the gelding finished thirteenth, beaten approximately 25 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding settled better. They ordered TOUGH TRADE to be routine tested.
3.25, seventh race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BRAE ON (IRE), ridden by Jonathon Bewley and trained by George Bewley, compared with its previous run at Carlisle on 1 December 2013 where the gelding finished sixth, beaten 18 ½ lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that gelding benefited from the step up in trip to 3m 3 furlongs.
08/12/2013 =====================================================

2.40, fifth race
A P McCoy, the rider of SUPER VILLAN, unplaced, reported that the gelding stopped quickly.

he Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton over Christmas remains the next likely port of call for Sire De Grugy following his victory in the BetVictor Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown on Saturday. Gary Moore: First Grade One winner Trainer Gary Moore fulfilled an ambition of sending out a first Grade One success in the two-mile feature, and to make the occasion even more memorable his stable star was ridden by his son, Jamie. "I hope to run him at Kempton," said Moore. "I know we have take Sprinter Sacre on at some point and I'd rather it was there (on December 27). "It was very special. For myself to have a Grade One winner with our horse and Jamie riding it and it's special for the owners as well. "It was very good, the horse did the job well. It all went to plan for a change. "He's got a big heart, he's very genuine because it wasn't really his ground. He wants softer ground. "He's absolutely fine. He ate all his food last night and he trotted out nice and sound this morning and is out in the paddock."

Steve Drowne has sustained a fractured collar bone after Nunthorpe Stakes heroine Jwala fell fatally in the Hong Kong Sprint. Jwala wins the Nunthorpe Stakes at York in the summer The jockey has also been reported to have suffered a punctured lung in the incident, which saw him stretchered from the track. Jwala, trained in Newmarket by Robert Cowell, was in contention for a place a furlong out but was beginning to drop backwards when appearing to be squeezed between rivals and falling to the ground just 50 yards from the finish. Cowell tweeted: "Thank you to everyone for their kind, sympathetic words. Jwala was a special racehorse - I am especially proud to have been part of her life."

Baby Run could run in a valuable long-distance chase at either Warwick or Haydock next month following his gallant effort in defeat from a lengthy lay-off at Aintree on Saturday. Baby Run (right): Encouraging return at Aintree on Saturday The 13-year-old belied his age and 959-day absence with a bold front-running performance that almost repaid reward in the Betfred Becher Chase as he went down by only a length after a renewed challenge to Chance Du Roy. Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies will now consider the Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick on January 14 and the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock a week later as the next race for his gallant veteran, who had been off with a slight leg problem since April 2011 when he won the Fox Hunters' Chase at Aintree and finished third in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown. "He ran a great race. We very much expected a big run from him. He did everything bar win, it was a great shame, but there you go," said the Naunton handler. "He's fine this morning - 100 per cent. He won't run for a bit. We'll find something for him in the New Year I expect. "We'll look at the Warwick long-distance chase and we'll also look at one of those type of races at Haydock, the Peter Marsh."
