Close Touch will miss an intended trip to Newbury on Friday after trainer Nicky Henderson discovered a "significant problem" on Thursday morning. Close Touch: Can't run at Newbury on Friday Owned by the Queen, the Grade Three-winning hurdler was spoken about in glowing terms by the champion trainer earlier this week. The five-year-old was was due to make his fencing debut at Newbury Grade Two contest, won by the likes of Denman, Dynaste and Henderson's Gold Cup hero Bobs Worth, but plans are now up in the air. Henderson said: "He has got a significant problem, which we discovered this morning. Unfortunately this is the brutality of the game. "He was always going to run at Newbury - he was one of the original three that were entered for the race. "Unfortunately he can't run and it's devastating."

27 November 2013 – CHELTENHAM CHARM This week's handicapper's blog focuses on the last day of Cheltenham's Open Meeting as well undefeated Annie Power's first race out of Ireland.
Centrepiece of day three of the Cheltenham Open meeting was the Stanjames.com Greatwood Hurdle, writes David Dickinson.
The race changed complexion going up the hill when the only front runner in the race, Ahyaknowyerself, departed the scene hampering quite a few of his rivals and broadsiding AP McCoy’s mount Thomas Edison, giving the Champion Jockey no chance of staying on board.
This left the Irish-trained outsider Rawnaq a few lengths clear but he was worn down on the flat by a pair of four-year-olds, this year’s Triumph Hurdle third Sametegal and the French import Dell’ Arca, now in the hands of David Pipe. It was the Pipe horse that narrowly prevailed despite edging away from the whip in the closing stages. Using the fourth home, Flaxen Flare, as my benchmark Dell’ Arca’s rating goes up 8 to 136.
Those that performed with credit despite interference in the race include Tanerko Emery, Pine Creek and Court Minstrel.
Earlier in the card The Liquidator continued his progress through the hurdling ranks by taking the Grade 2 Sky Bet Sharp Novices Hurdle in great style. This form is hard to assess as Sea Lord appeared to dislike either the track or the ground or, most likely, both. Given that the third home lost a shoe, this would not be a wise race to take at face value. Through the Greatwood, the time seems to put the winner somewhere in the 140s.
Rolling on to win
Rolling Star has grown over the summer according to his trainer and his return at Haydock in the Read Nicholls and McCain Exclusively on Betfiar Hurdle, a race won by the yard’s Binocular when it was restricted to four-year-olds, bodes well for a successful campaign. Like the Greatwood runner-up Sametegal, his new rating is 150 and the return of their March Cheltenham conqueror, Our Conor, is awaited with great interest.
Champion bumper runner-up Regal Encore surprisingly had his colours lowered on his hurdle debut but was most impressive last week in the Call Star Sports 08000 521 321 Novices’ Hurdle at Plumpton, as was his Aintree conqueror last month, Garde La Victoire, when running away from a big field at Warwick in the I’m a Celeb Slot Only at 32Red.com National Hunt Novices’ Hurdle on Wednesday.
Annie powers ahead
The Grade 2 Ascot Hurdle on Saturday saw the British debut of the previously unbeaten mare Annie Power, writes Chris Nash. Her unblemished record in Ireland had been obtained in three bumpers and four hurdles as a novice last season, including her victory in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse in March.
She arrived with a rating of 155 and faced a serious challenge in the shape of Zarkandar who had finished fifth and fourth in the last two Champion Hurdles and had beaten The New One when winning the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle on his most recent start in April. He arrived with a rating of 167 and race conditions meant that he gave the mare 11lbs.
They jumped the second last hurdle upsides but Annie Power was just in front over the last and drew clear to win by five lengths. Assessing the race revolves around what figure Zarkandar might have run to. Given that this was his seasonal return and he ran without the blinkers that he had sported when successful at Aintree I settled on him running to 165 – a shade below his Aintree figure.
This has Annie Power running to 159, which equates to another career best. Connections have in mind a Champion Hurdle challenge for her where she would receive a 7lb mare allowance. She would still need to improve a little to shake up the current champion, her stable mate, Hurricane Fly (rated 172). Arguably she also needs to show that she has the pace for a 2m Championship race with her highest figures thus far being obtained over the 2½ mile trip.
However, her progressive profile means that neither is impossible and she is an exciting prospect. Although it is an unlikely target she would have a big say in the Mares Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival – a race that her stable mate Quevega has made her own in recent times.

Paul Nicholls, trainer: WONDERFUL CHARM " “He has got to give weight to a couple of horses at the bottom but it is a nice race for him. He will like the ground and it is another bit of experience. I am quite keen to run him on good ground. He is over 150 rated already and it is frustrating there are so few runners. I can't wait to run him in a competitive race where there are plenty of runners so they can go a good gallop. These small fields are muddling old races.” " Wonderful Charm 2:05 Newbury ==============================================================

After a good first day at the Hennessy Festival with two winners, Paul sends another six runners to Newbury on Friday, with a further two in action up at Doncaster. Here's his exclusive take on their chances...
12:20 Doncaster - Funny Star
Has run two decent races over fences, and Daryl wasn't hard on him once he knew he was beaten, against a fair sort, at Plumpton last week. That level of form gives him an obvious chance today and he will like the good ground, but Nicky's smart hurdler Ericht is probably the one to beat if taking to chasing.
12:30 Newbury - Calipto
This is a race I like to target and I have won it a couple of times in recent seasons, although I won't mention our beaten favourites! More seriously, as with the case with two of those who were beaten - Ranjaan and Saphir Du Rheu - defeat certainly wouldn't be disastrous for Calipto as I like to let my juveniles progress on the track, rather than really getting stuck into them at home.
Calipto has, however, done everything right since joining us after finishing second in a listed newcomers hurdle at Auteuil in September, so I am hopeful of a good run. But there are some interesting horses lined up against him here, including decent sorts from the Flat - it is the best juvenile race of the season so far - so I am hopeful rather than confident.
13:30 Newbury - Aiteen Thirtythree
It is fair to say that I was expecting a little more from him on his comeback at Wincanton - I said here that we had given him a full MOT in his time off the track with a leg injury - but he was never really going at any stage and seemed to sulk a bit. So I am trying him over hurdles here to try and get his enthusiasm back. And we put cheekpieces on him for the first time, too. He races off 132, which seriously underestimates the ability he showed over fences a couple of seasons back, but we obviously need to see a lot more from him today. I have a Graduation Chase earmarked for him here on December 18.
14:05 Newbury - Wonderful Charm
I have been delighted with his two victories over fences so far, and I think that he is a happier horse since we sorted his breathing out in the summer. He did well to reel in a smart sort in Fox Appeal at Wincanton last time - the runner-up's earlier second to Black Thunder looks pretty good form now - and I think that he could be better than he showed that day. Carries a 7lb penalty but trip and ground and track look ideal, and I'll obviously be a little disappointed if he is beaten, even though The Romford Pele and Tanerko Emery are serious threats getting weight.
14:40 Newbury - Grandioso & Cedre Bleu
I think both of mine will be sharper for the run, but you obviously can't rule them out. Grandioso nearly died after a colic attack in the spring, which is why you haven't seen him since he won a Grade 2 at Kempton back in February. And he has also suffered similar, if milder, attacks since, too. So it remains to be seen whether he can carry on the astounding progress he made last season. I hope he can, because he has his work cut out off a mark of 145 otherwise. Cedre Bleu loves it round here, and 2m4f on a flat track on decent ground are probably his ideal conditions. He did well to win in first time blinkers at Haydock in March, and I think that he is on a fair mark still, but I suspect that he could just need this outing.
15:15 Newbury - Tagrita
Is a nice filly who won a maiden point in Ireland impressively in the summer. She is a decent prospect but she has been very slow to come to hand, and win, lose or draw she will improve enormously for the run, mentally as well as physically. And this looks a hot little race.
15:35 Doncaster - Black Cow
Showed ability in a couple of bumpers last season. I think that he will come into his own when stepping up in trip over hurdles, but we give him one more run for experience and he has already shown enough to be more than competitive here. Will hopefully go well for my daughter Megan.
15:45 Newbury - Fascino Rustico
Had a breathing operation after choking on his debut for us, and then found a combination of testing ground, running too free, and stiffer competition too much for him in the Festival bumper in March. Is not a natural jumper, so we have done hours and hours of schooling with him - I said recently that he has probably done the most schooling any of mine have ever done before their debuts, over hurdles or fences - but, even so, I suspect that he will need the experience. When it all clicks for him, he will be alright, though.

14:40 Friday 29th November Racing Tips - 29/11/2013
Newbury kicks off with a classy little Juvenile Hurdle and, on past winners, it pays to look at the yards of Pipe, Nicholls and King. David Pipe is empty handed but Paul Nicholls has the well regarded Calipto. The market is often worth a check in these races but, either way, this 3 year old was a solid 2nd on French debut in Listed company and worthy of his place near the top of the market. I'm more taken with Alan King's Chocola though and very aware of just how positive the yard are about this 82 rated flat performer. He was progressive on the flat over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 2 miles and, while he's likely to get further over hurdles in time, his experience gives him something of an edge on hurdles debut this afternoon. Not unnoticed at 5/2, check the sleeves and notice that he is part owned by those shrewd people that brought Katchit from the flat to hurdles with great success. Newbury 12.30 - Chocola 2pt win
Definite Dream looks a solid option in the next race but if you want a certainty, back Ballywatt for a place. If you don't have a preference, pray he wins because he deserves to for very patient connections. Another Kim Bailey runner, Twelve Roses, makes plenty of appeal in the big field handicap hurdle and his form looks very good. Beaten last time by the horse that was to be JP McManus's Albert Bartlett runner before complications, Twelve Roses could be very good indeed. Short prices do well in this and he's well worth support at 6/1. The others I like are Mickie for a yard going well and Kilmurvy, who should be a fare bit better than he has shown of late. The former is 2lb lower than when 2nd at Ludlow and should appreciate the step up to 3 miles at 14/1. She was well supported on reappearance but unseated at the last when beaten and then improved when a staying on 5th in better company than this. Jeremy Scott's gelding is off a very handy mark on the basis of his end of last season efforts. Not far beaten in a Listed hurdle behind Easter Day, he was staying on behind Seventh Sign at Chepstow and has a massive weight pull with the Alan King runner today. He was a touch below par last time but the ground was very testing and he shapes as if a step up to this trip is what he needs. Nick Scholfield opts for the Bailey fancy but the selection can't be discounted at 33/1. Newbury 13.30 - Mickie 1pt e/w Newbury 13.30 - Kilmurvy 1pt e/w
Yes Wonderful Charm wll probably win the Grade 2 Novice Chase given his potential and the form the Nicholls yard is in with its young chasers. Only a 5 year old, he was well supported when thrown into the World Hurdle and is unbeaten over fences in 2 starts this term. However, a safer bet for me is The Romford Pele at 6/1 who looks to have been underestimated for this. I think he will beat Tanerko Emery and, if the Nicholls runner chucks in a few mistakes, you never know… A P McCoy is back on him and has a good record with this 6 year old who was beaten less than a length by Balder Success. The key in that race was the time. It was a course record and, on Balder Success' rating, we can assume Pele can run up to a mid 140's mark. He is in receipt of 7lb from the favourite and that gives him a shout here. Last time was a silly race at Cheltenham, a sprint from a crawl, and he needs much much more of a test (I think he will get 3 miles in time) and that looks more likely today. Newbury 14.05 - The Romford Pele 1pt win
Both Cantlow and Cedre Bleu are worth support in the next. The former has been disappointing since romping home in a Taunton Novice chase in January but was well supported for his Cheltenham run before being withdrawn at the start. He din't see out 3 miles 1 at Aintree and now drops in class from his Wetherby run when, far from running badly, he just never got into it. It was the run of a protected horse who had finished the previous season a little below expectations and I expect the yard wanted to look after him first time out. He's likely to be ridden more aggressively today and has every chance at 19/2 if back on song. The Nicholls runner was patchy last year but very good at his best and I think he's stronger than his current mark. He's lazy in front but only 4lb higher than his Haydock win and a real threat back over 2 and a half miles after fading over a staying trip at Cheltenham. Newbury 14.40 - Cantlow 1pt e/w

Musselburgh, 29 November 2013
12.10, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, STITCHED IN TIME (IRE), ridden by Shaun Dobbin and trained by Rose Dobbin, compared with its previous run at Wetherby on 1 November 2013 where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the trainer’s explanation that STITCHED IN TIME (IRE) was better suited by the change in tactics and the faster going on this occasion. They ordered STITCHED IN TIME (IRE) to be routine tested.
12.40, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference after the final hurdle. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, DISPOUR (IRE), ridden by Jason Maguire, had interfered with THORPE (IRE), placed second, ridden by Derek Fox. The Stewards found Maguire in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he failed to take sufficient steps to prevent the interference. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Friday 13 and Saturday 14 December 2013.
2.55, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, PASS MUSTER, ridden by Adam Nicol and trained by Philip Kirby, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the gelding had had problems and had benefited from a long break. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of PASS MUSTER could be reviewed.

Doncaster, 29 November 2013
12.50, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why MAHAB EL SHAMAAL, trained by Alan Jessop, ran with reins attached to the bridle by means of studs. Having heard his evidence they found him in breach of Rule (C)36.1.2 and fined him £80.
3.05, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, PORTWAY FLYER (IRE), ridden by Will Kennedy and trained by Ian Williams, compared with its previous run at Uttoxeter, on 22 September 2013, where the gelding finished sixth, beaten around 70 lengths. They interviewed the trainer who had no other explanation than that the yard had come back into form. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of PORTWAY FLYER (IRE) could be reviewed. They ordered PORTWAY FLYER (IRE) to be routine tested.

Wolverhampton, 29 November 2013
3.55, first race
The Stewards noted that SKINNY LOVE, placed second, and GAUCHITA, placed third, had interfered with AUSSIE SKY (IRE), unplaced, leaving the stalls but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved SKINNY LOVE or GAUCHITA’s placing.
The Stewards noted that the winner, DEBT SETTLER (IRE), had interfered with GAUCHITA, placed third, inside the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved DEBT SETTLER (IRE)’s placing.

HENNESSY STATS AND EARLY THOUGHTS
( sent to full members here earlier this week )
I have yet to choose my final selection from a little shortlist. Like a nice piece of steak it is a preview that needs to rest allowing the dust to settle as we wait and see who pulls out and how the ground is. I have to decide if the race will be won by a horse that has ran this year or not. Normally 4 days before this race you would expect 7/2 the field but it is 8/1 the field this year and that's down to a few reasons. One of these is the standard set in last years RSA Chase which is lower than it has been in recent years. Yesterday there was support for LORD WINDERMERE. He has just about the strongest traditional profile in the race but there's an argument that I can make that when that RSA Chase is less than vintage the Hennessy may well go to a horse that has raced this year. This is all for later in the week anyway. What I can say is I will not be going with either of Our Father or Rocky Creek and I would not see Invictus as a likely selection either. No firm decision yet. This race could easily be won by a horse that raced recently and a shock is more than possible as well.
* This is a Handicap Chase over 3m2f110y * There are 21 renewals since 1992 * Recent winners had the following National Hunt runs * This means Bumpers Hurdles and Fences combined * 10-20-12-16-23-10-12-11-6-6-18-18-16-12-7-14-5-17-16 * Horses with 6-18 National Hunt runs do best
* The last few winners had the following Chase races * 4-14-3-12-23-5-4-4-6-4-11-6-5-6-7-11-5-13-7 * 11 of the last 17 winners had between 3-7 Chase starts
* The winners had the following runs in Handicaps * 0-5-0-21-0-1-0-1-1-7-1-1-1-1-7-2-7-1-1-11-3-1-1-8 * Horses with 0-1 Handicap runs do very well
* Horses that were 1st-2nd last time score well * 17 of the last 21 winners were 1st or 2nd last time * Two of the four that were not finished 3rd
* Second-season chasers are the most interesting * They won 10 of the last 14 renewals
* Horses aged 11 or more should be opposed * The last ones to win were in 1957 and 1967
* Horses aged 10 should also be avoided * The last winner aged 10 was back in 1981 * Diamond Edge was is the only 10yo winner in 43 years. * Since 1988 horses aged 10 or more are 0-63 in this race
* Horses aged 9 are 3-76 since 1992 * Horses aged 9 won just 3 of the last 24 renewals * They had 17 7 15 National Hunt runs * They had 12 7 8 Chase runs * Two ran that season having 7 and 8 Chase starts * The other (Denman) was a rare 9yo seasonal debutant * Seasonal debutants aged 9 or more are 1-44 * They won from official ratings of 174 139 145
* Horses aged 8 are 4-70 since 1992 * They had all had a race that season * Horses aged 8 first time out are 0-19 since 1992 * The 4 winners aged 8 had 20 18 14 17 National Hunt runs * The 4 winners aged 8 had 14 16 11 13 Chase runs * They won from official ratings of 146 149 162 148
* Horses aged 7 have a 10-93 record since 1992 * The 10 winners had 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 1 2 4 runs this season * The 10 winners had 10 12 23 10 11 18 16 12 5 29 National Hunt runs * The 10 winners had 4 3 23 5 4 6 5 6 5 13 previous chase runs * They won from the following official ratings * 160 156 150 161 151 145 137 136 142 149 * An idea; profile is a lightly raced 7yo debutant * There were 5 seasonal debutant winners aged 7 * They all had Grade 1 form before * They had 4 3 5 4 6 previous Chase starts * They won this race in 2001 2005 2007 2010 2012
* Horses aged 6 have a 4-39 record since 1992 * The 4 winners aged 6 had 0 1 2 1 runs this season * Seasonal debutant 6 year olds were 1-15 in recent years * That winner (State Of Play) had just 4 Chase starts
* Horses aged 6 are best with a recent run * They are best with under 8 Chase runs winning last time * The 4 winners aged 6 had 12 6 6 16 National Hunt runs * The 4 winners aged 6 had 4 6 4 7 previous chase runs * The 4 winners aged 6 had official ratings of 145 142 140 135 * One winner age 6 came from a Novice Chase (1993)
* The following is an excellent profile * Male horses aged 6 * Winning last time out * Running within 18 days * Having 8 or fewer Chase starts * 3 horses had this profile * They finished W W W winning in 1994 2003 2004
* 17 of the last 20 winners had form in Grade 1-2 before * There were only 3 horses that did not * All 3 had Under 9 career starts * These 3 had 4 5 7 Chase Starts * Horses with No Grade 1-2 form should be lightly raced * The last that wasn't was 40/1 shock Sibton Abbey in 1991
* I looked at horses that had raced that season * None of the winners came from a Non Handicap Graded race * Horses that come from Non handicaps this year are 0-26
* No Seasonal debutant won without Grade 1 form * Few Hennessy winners have Headgear * No past winner came from a Hurdles race
* There were 7 seasonal debutant winners since 1997 * I looked at their career best Racing Post Rating * They had achieved the following career best * 167 165 184 169 160 160 155
* No past winner came from a Grade 2 Chase first time out * I'd be wary of horses from the Paddy Power Gold Cup * There is precious little recovery time from a hard race * The double has been done by Celestial Gold (2004) * The previous winner to do that was in 1980 * It has been done but it is not ideal as a trial race

Jessica Harrington is confident a searching two and a half miles at Fairyhouse will not be a problem for Jezki in Sunday's Bar One Racing Hatton's Grace Hurdle. Jezki: Sunday outing A three-times Grade One winner last season and also third in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, Jezki made a pleasing return to action when notching an all-the-way success in a trappy contest at Down Royal. Each of his eight career victories have come at the minimum distance of two miles and he faces some stout stayers this weekend, but Harrington believes the extra distance is well within her stable star's range. "All has gone well since Down Royal, he seems in good form and we are looking forward to the race," said Harrington. "I'm sure between the two Gigginstown horses and Willie Mullins' two horses they are going to make it a test of stamina, but all Jezki's family got further. His full-brother (Jenari) stayed two and a half miles well. "We decided to come here rather than the Morgiana at Punchestown a couple of weeks ago. We decided not to take on the Champion Hurdle winner (Hurricane Fly) and we'll dip our toe in the water here instead. "We'll see how things go on Sunday. We're very much taking it one race at a time." Last year's winner Zaidpour is one of two runners for Mullins, with the champion trainer also saddling smart youngster Diakali. On ratings Zaidpour would appear to biggest threat to odds-on favourite Jezki, but Mullins is concerned conditions will not be testing enough for his charge. Mullins said: "Zaidpour is obviously last year's winner, but the ground won't suit him. I don't think he's ever won without either the word or soft or heavy in the going description, so that would be a worry. "He's in good form, we know he likes the track and he gets the trip, so we'll see what happens. Diakali has won a Grade One over two and a half miles as well." The field is completed by two Gigginstown house Stud-owned runners in Rule The World and Dedigout. The Mouse Morris-trained Rule The World chased home The New One at Cheltenham in March, before suffering what appeared a life-threatening pelvic injury at Punchestown. Happily he recovered quickly and made a winning comeback at Naas in late October, but Morris admits it has not all been plain sailing since. Morris said: "I'm happy with him, but he did have that hold-up after Naas. He was due to go for a race in Navan, but he got an infection in his leg, so we had to wait and come here. I'm happy enough with him, so we'll see how we go on Sunday." Tony Martin's Dedigout enjoyed a fine novice campaign over fences last season, but switched back to the smaller obstacles for his return to action. A smart victory in the Lismullen Hurdle prompted connections to take aim at this weekend's Grade One prize and Martin is hopeful of a bold show. "We've been happy with him since his run in Navan the last day. It's a hot race on Sunday but I think he deserves to take his chance," said the trainer. "He's had three weeks since Navan so he's fresh, well and ready to go, so we'll see what happens. He likes testing ground, but at this stage of the season I'd rather he was running on better ground. He can handle it all right and it's still only November, so we don't want to be bottoming him on really soft ground. "At this stage of the year, two and a half miles on good ground is ideal for him, as we want him to still be going in April. Like with all the horses, we'll take it one race at a time. He's won his novice over fences, so all the options are there for him."

Nicky Richards is hoping Eduard can atone for his mistake on his fencing debut when he lines up for the Happy Birthday Courtney Walton Novices' Chase at Carlisle on Sunday. Nicky Richards: Trains Eduard The promising five-year-old was alongside eventual winner Pendra when losing all chance after jumping the second-last, eventually going down by three and a three-quarter lengths. The Charlie Longsdon-trained Pendra has already franked the form with a facile success at Lingfield. Now it is Eduard's chance to get on the scoresheet over the bigger obstacles. "Everything's fine with the big horse. I'm very happy with him and hopefully everything will go nicely for him on Sunday," said Richards. "He just slightly overreached himself that day at Carlisle and it just took 10 days to settle down. Everything's been fine since and hopefully it's onwards and upwards with him." Eduard's five rivals include Sue Smith's Mwaleshi and Brian Ellison's Yesyoucan, who have won over fences this month at Wetherby and Newcastle respectively.

Lydia Hislop: Tears and cheers By: Lydia Hislop The Hennessy Gold Cup is the best handicap chase of the season. It just edges it over the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival and any marathon chase at Hexham. We're betting without the Grand National here, given it's a one-off. And these rankings are, clearly, fact and not personal opinion. Lord Windermere: Ticks a lot of boxes I defy you to watch the 2009 Hennessy and not cry - or at least not to have to look away quickly and not talk for a while, if you're a show-no-weakness type. I'm a crier. I'm also a foot-stamper, a thigh-slapper and an overly loud cheerer when watching a good horserace. All four of these things happened four years ago this Saturday. (I must admit it also happened in 1984, when my Grandma's favourite Burrough Hill Lad put up one of the great weight-carrying performances, and in 1997 when Suny Bay won. Three out of four were in evidence in 2007 and 2012, too.) You won't need reminding that Denman won the 2009 Hennessy. He did so carrying top-weight of 11-12, conceding upwards of 13lb all round and having last been sighted almost eight months earlier staggering shakily to his feet following a winding fall at Aintree's Grand National meeting. He also won in that trademark style, seeing off What A Friend's quixotic challenge almost with his charisma as much as his class, stamina and sheer cussedness. Thus the Tank also became only the third horse - emulating Mandarin and Arkle, no less - to triumph in this greatly competitive race twice. He may have won the 2008 Gold Cup (and finished second in the next three renewals) but this was the definitive Denman moment. A real I-Was-There race. Racing UK has been repeating it this week as part of their Hennessy build-up and every time I have to stop what I'm doing to watch. I mean every time - and that's a lot. Last year's Hennessy was a tremendous race in its own right, providing the ideal stage for Bobs Worth to kick off his Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning campaign. (Campaign used in its loosest sense, given it comprised only two races.) His defeat of two subsequent Grade One chase winners - the newly-plausible Tidal Bay, who took the Lexus next time out, and First Lieutenant, who won the BetFred Bowl at Aintree in April - fired the imagination, not to mention me off the sofa. This year's edition promises to be no less significant for the remaining season. Cape Tribulation, winner of the Grade Two Argento Chase in January, tops the handicap and there are numerous unexposed horses to whom he must concede weight. Chief of those to my mind is Lord Windermere, who last year was an unheralded winner of a dramatic RSA Chase. If you watch that Cheltenham Festival contest again, it's hard to imagine Lord Windermere won't be benefitted by this step up in trip of two furlongs. Objective viewing also undermines the idea that Boston Bob would definitely have won had he stood up at the last. Particularly ridden the way he was, making a quick wide move to lead on the home turn, he might well have been vulnerable to Lord Windermere's stamina had he stood up. Oddly, the winner is still relatively unheralded - except by his trainer. Jim Culloty has been bullish about his charge's chances this week, just as he was prior to Cheltenham. It helps that Robbie McNamara has ridden him before, when a close-up third in a Grade One chase over too short a trip. Lord Windermere has the ideal, improving profile of the second-season chaser for this contest and is unexposed at distances of three miles and further. He is no forlorn hope for the Gold Cup itself and, at a current best price of 25/1, would shorten considerably if successful here. (Although, of course, Sir Des Champs wins that next March, good ground permitting.) Highland Lodge is perhaps the chief danger, having produced a career-best effort to chase home Standing Ovation on his seasonal debut at Wincanton; his conqueror won a more competitive race on his next start. Emma Lavelle's runner is another to be unexposed at this trip and is open to further progress. The yard also remains in good form, if you like that kind of reasoning. There's reason to believe Loch Ba will outrun his price, given he is very effective at this course and ran well in a decent race at Bangor on his seasonal debut. Cloudy Too is also interesting, following a good win at Carlisle and upped to a trip that suited him over hurdles. Merry King is another major player, having shaped with promise when challenging from a long way back behind the likeable Houblon Des Obeaux at Ascot last time. Triolo d'Alene, third in the same race, is still improving. Prince De Beauchene, armed with Ruby Walsh in the saddle, should also be thereabouts on his best form. The going was good-to-soft at worst at Newbury on Thursday and, with minimal rain forecast, ground nearer good come Saturday may be in prospect. That could be a disadvantage for Rocky Creek, who never looked comfortable on a sound surface at Aintree in April; perhaps a more galloping track will help, though. Such ground is surely a serious issue for Our Father. Invictus's price is unattractive for a horse returning from 651 days on the sidelines for an assignment likely to require a career best. His beguiling defeat of Bobs Worth at Ascot flatters him, given the second is proven to be a far better horse going left-handed. Katenko was an upwardly mobile chaser last season until a bout of colic forced him to miss the Gold Cup, but it's hard to treat that setback lightly. Hadrian's Approach could be a serious chaser if he just got his jumping together but that, sadly for him, is the name of the game. If a tongue-tie and cheekpieces for the first time reawaken Opening Batsman, he's well handicapped on his Racing Plus Chase victory. If you can find reasons to overlook one bad run, admittedly their latest, then Super Duty and Same Difference come into the argument. You get the picture: it's one hell of a competitive race and a more than worthy centrepiece to Saturday's card at Newbury. A day that, for the first time since his strangely auspicious unseating of Sam Thomas in the 2008 Hennessy, will be without the presence of Big Buck's. Spare a thought for his recovery prior to the Long Distance Hurdle and cheer home a winner in the Hennessy. Verdict: 1 Lord Windermere 2 Highland Lodge 3 Loch Ba 4 Cloudy Too

TIMMY MURPHY has been ruled out of the Hennessy Gold Cup, missing the ride on leading fancy Our Father after suffering the recurrence of an old shoulder injury sustained in a scuffle with fellow jockey Dominic Elsworth at Newbury on Friday.
Murphy, who won the race in 1999 on Ever Blessed and again in 2004 on Celestial Gold, was forced to give up his ride in the concluding race and was taken to hospital, with the on-course stewards stating no incident had been reported to them by the doctor.
There was speculation Murphy had been injured as the result of an altercation with another jockey, and the Daily Mirror has named Elsworth as the other party.
An anonymous eye-witness said the pair came to blows following the fifth race on the card, with Elsworth finishing second on Easter Meteor, two places ahead of Murphy on Upsilon Bleu.
The onlooker said: "A few words were exchanged at the end of the race, but it was once the two were back in the changing room that tempers really frayed.
"It's well known the two jockeys aren't exactly best mates, and before you knew it they were rolling around on the floor."
Former weighing room colleague Mick Fitzgerald discussed the incident on Channel 4's Morning Line, and revealed that Murphy had called Elsworth to apologise.
Speaking on Friday evening, Murphy's wife Verity said: "He has hurt his shoulder so I would say it is unlikely he will ride tomorrow. It's not 100 per cent yet, they are just x-raying it and checking it out.
"It's an old injury and it's clicked out, which it does a lot. It's the left shoulder that he has hurt before."
With Murphy ruled out Pipe confirmed on Saturday morning that Conor O'Farrell will now ride Our Father.
Elsworth is set to be in action at Newbury again this afternoon, with his sole ride Loch Ba for Mick Channon in the Hennessy.

NOTEBOOK.
rainer Chris Gordon's KAKI ISLAND probably ran as well as could be expected, according to the betting, when a beaten fourth of eight runners, at 33/1, in the 2m NH novices' hur- dle at Kempton's Monday Jumps meeting ear- lier this week. The five-year-old son of Heron Island showed modest promise in three starts in bumpers last season, and is surely bred as a future chaser, but he was ridden with some confidence on this hurdling debut, his jockey Tom Cannon stealing a march on his rivals and sending him to the front from the outset. Kaki Island began to tire and made a mistake at the third-last and was soon headed and beaten, and while he was beaten forty lengths by the winner and runner-up, they are two po- tentially smart recruits, and were first and second in the betting, with the runner-up also talked of before the race as a potential Supreme Novices' Hurdle candidate. Kaki Island is almost certainly not of the same cloth, but there will be easier races for him in the season ahead, possibly in handicaps. The closing race of the Kempton meeting was a decent 2m handicap hurdle, won by an ex- pensively-bought hurdler of Paul Nicholls, who had been running in better company last season, just beating an unexposed runner-up of Nicky Henderson's, FOURTH ESTATE . The seven-year-old son of Fantastic Light was un- beaten in his first four starts, including his first two over hurdles the season before last. On his final start of that campaign, in April 2012, he was a solid fourth behind the tal- ented Grandads Horse, but hadn't been seen on the racecourse since then, and this latest start rates as a fair effort, given his 18-month absence. His effort flattened out a little at the close and he will surely come on for the run, with the expectation, as one of some size and scope, that he will jump a fence at some point. In the same race, the third-placed ROMAN FLIGHT was only just behind the first two home and ran well on his first start since July, and his first for his new trainer, David Dennis. Previously with David O'Meara, for whom he finished third in a Listed handicap hurdle at Market Rasen in the summer, six lengths be- hind the useful winner, Sea Lord, Roman Flight ran again on this latest start as if he was doing all his best work at the finish and although he has shown good form over 2m, he still looks as though a step up in trip to 2m 4f or thereabouts, or maybe a change in tac- tics to being ridden more prominently, would help his cause. At Ludlow, in the 2m 5f NH novices' hurdle, there was some merit in the hurdling debut of the Oliver Sherwood-trained MR CARDLE . Twice a runner-up in two starts in bumpers this season and last, this son of Golan out of a Be My Native mare was always going to want a test of stamina, but the race devel- oped into something of a test of speed, and it was no coincidence that the first three home were all positioned closer to the pace whereas Mr Cardle stayed on from the rear. He did make good progress, but it was happening all too slowly and he can be given another chance at this level. =======================================================
STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends
Last Saturday's action may only have presented us with a 1/5 winner, and an 11/2 each-way advised runner-up, but we hope this consis- tency of the stats-influenced selections can find some more winners at meatier prices this week, with all of this Saturday afternoon's ac- tion set to come from the Jumps meetings at Newbury (1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35) and New- castle (2.05 and 2.40) via Channel 4. Tom Scudamore was the rider of Dynaste, our placed each-way selection last Saturday, but he didn't figure amongst the leading Jump jockeys for the seven days to Monday, 25 November. The most-winning rider was Richard Johnson, whose 8 wins put him three clear of four jock- eys - Barry Geraghty, Tony McCoy, Paul Moloney and Noel Fehily - who each rode 5 winners in period, with McCoy's 41% strike rate giving him the edge by that reckoning, ahead of Geraghty (31%) and, further down the winning jockeys' table, Liam Treadwell (30%.) Of the Jumps trainers, it was Nicky Henderson who led the way in the past week with 6 win- ners and a 25% strike rate, putting him just be- hind Venetia Williams, who saddled the same total number of winners but did so from fewer runners, achieving a 30% strike rate. Paul Nicholls wasn't far away, with 5 winners and a 26% strike rate. The in-form Nicky Henderson goes to Newbury's Hennessy Gold Cup meeting this weekend mob- handed, and it will be disappointing if the reign- ing champion trainer doesn't enjoy a winner or two at his local course, where he has saddled 40 winners in the past five seasons. That said, it's his perennial rival Paul Nicholls who has the leading tally of 45 winners in the same period and a superior 26% strike rate to Nicky's 18%. In the first of the scheduled televised races from Newbury, the 2m 3f handicap hurdle, Nicky has several entrants, including the well- regarded Whisper, who ran a good race to fin- ish third under top-weight on his seasonal debut at Cheltenham last time, and can im- prove for that run. Another trainer who has been in strong form lately is Willie Mullins, and his possible runner in this race is Drive Time, who is twice a winner over distance. The main race of the day at Newbury is the Hennessy Gold Cup, won twice in the past decade by the runners of Nicky Henderson, and three times in the same period by those of Paul Nicholls. Favourites or joint-favourites have won four of the last 10 races, but one who could go well at an each-way price is the Emma Lavelle- trained Highland Lodge. The yard has enjoyed a 31% strike rate in the past 14 days and Highland Lodge has won two of his four starts on the good-soft going. Of Henderson's possible run- ners, Triolo D'Alene has winning form on the ground and has a chance at the weights relative to Houblon Des Obeaux, who beat him at Ascot but has gone up the ratings as a result. At Newcastle, the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle is one of the recognised trials for the Champion Hur- dle later in the season, but today's renewal looks to lack the strength in depth of the most recent runnings of this race and Nicky Henderson's tal- ented two-miler My Tent Or Yours looks the one ahead on ability, and has also won 2 from 3 on the expected going and is 4 from 7 over distance. The one possible fly in the ointment is that this horse is coming back from a break and trainer Jeremy Scott's Melodic Rendezvous might be the one to capitalise, having won the Elite Hurdle in good fashion on his seasonal debut last time, and is 3 from 4 over distance. ===================================================
RACE RATINGS.
Saturday, 30 November - 2.25 Newbury Bet365 Long Distance Hurdle (Grade 2) (Class 1) 3m 110y
426-16 Celestial Halo 174 9 11-8 Paul Nicholls A fine servant to Nicholls' Ditcheat yard over the years, finishing second in a Champion Hur- dle some years ago and was second in the World Hurdle last season. Still capable of mix- ing it with the best and has an each-way chance in this company. RATING 98 11111- At Fishers Cross 239 6 11-4 Rebecca Curtis Exciting novice hurdler last season who now has to prove himself against the big boys and stable is firing on all cylinders at the moment. One possible negative is that this race will be his first after the summer break, but has won first start in each of the last two seasons. Should be thereabouts. RATING 99 311-1P Battle Group 14 8 11-4 Johnny Farrelly A seasoned campaigner who has been mixing hurdles and chases effectively in recent sea- sons, winning at Grade 3 and Listed level over both types of obstacle in his last four starts. Returned to action when pulled up in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last time. Fewer run- ners here, but this is arguably higher-class, and looks one more capable of competing for the minor prizes. RATING 94 411P-2 Medinas 28 6 11-4 Alan King Runner-up to the talented Tidal Bay in the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle last time, which was a good start to his season, having won the Coral Cup last term. Faces stiffer op- position here, but is still a respected con- tender for stable having a good season. RATING 97 11/2-1 Ballyalton 55 6 11-0 Ian Williams Wide-margin winner of a 2m Uttoxeter maiden hurdle last time, on return to action after a year's absence. Previously won two bumpers in good style, so obviously has ability, and un- exposed at this level, but has a lot on his plate here. RATING 91 03-231 Buachaill Alainn 157 6 11-0 Peter Bowen Held by At Fisher's Cross when third to that horse in the Sefton Hurdle at Aintree last sea- son, and made fair fist of things at a lower level when placed twice and winning once in three starts in novices' chases over the sum- mer. Could be more to come, but others pre- ferred. RATING 93 3/12-0 Milborough 15 7 11-0 Tim Vaughan Formerly with Irish trainer Charles Byrnes for whom he showed some fair form as a novice hurdler last season. Was unfancied for stable debut last time at Cheltenham when sent off at 66/1 and blotted copybook with early mis- take from which he never really recovered. Un- known quantity but has a lot to prove in this company. RATING 90 5115-2 Salubrious 14 6 11-0 Paul Nicholls Progressive handicap hurdler last season, win- ning the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festi- val and running a solid race at Aintree when fifth to Minella Forfitness. Was a good second on seasonal debut in a Listed handicap hurdle over 3m 2f, when connections later reported that they had expected him to need the run. Could go well at a price. RATING 96 142-01 Reve De Sivola28 8 11-8 Nick Williams Best form of recent seasons has come on soft or heavy ground, including Grade 1 win in France on latest start. Was second to Big Buck's in this race last year, and with that horse absent, is arguably the pick of those established in this division of hurdlers. RATING 100 ===========================================

The Hennessy looks typically difficult and, while I think Rocky Creek looks a very solid prospect and his trainer is due a win in this, I'm not very excited by his price. The same goes for Highland Lodge who is on the shortlist and was so close to a win last time when giving weight all round. He finished in a very fast time but it was a hard race and I think he should be bigger in the market. Only just behind Rocky Creek at Aintree was Super Duty and he has 3lb in had with the likely favourite today. I worry if he tries to make all and has competition for the lead but the same tactics worked with Sydney Paget a week ago and the yard is really hitting form. He's 6lb higher than for his narrow defeat to Same Difference on his only handicap start and that runner went on to produce a good effort under a penalty next time. He goes well first time out and is a nice option at 18/1, especially given some cut in the ground. I'm a big Houblon Des Obeaux fan but worry that a 10lb hike may just be too much and of more interest is Merry King at 12/1, who I genuinely think should be favourite for this. He was staying on from the back all the time at Ascot behind the Venetia Williams runner and has a 7lb pull today over almost an extra 3 furlongs. McLernon and O'Neill have already claimed 1 big race this season and this 6 year old, who seemed to need a run first up last year, looks a hugely promising 2nd season chaser. Newbury 15.00 - Super Duty 1pt e/w Newbury 15:00 - Merry King 1pt e/w
Both Henderson and Nicholls have a super record in the race post Hennessy and Tetlami will be tough to beat if jumping soundly. However, he rarely does so and Henderson's horses are not in fine fettle as yet. Nicholls sends out Ulck Du Lin to defend his crown but it is an ex-Ditcheat inmate that I look the look of. Elenika is 7/1 and looks very well treated on the basis of his previous efforts giving weight to plenty of these over the past year and he showed glimpses of a return to form last time on stable debut. The yard has found it's feet this season now and the sun out all day should ensure the ground stays on the decent side, which looks essential. An extra furlong from last time will also help and I fancy him to reverse the form with Anay Turge for which he is 8lb better off. The other I'll back is Filbert for a yard that is flying now. He looked like he needed the run at Ascot in a better contest on paper than this and a more confident round of jumping will see him go very close. Newbury 15.35 - Elenika 1pt e/w

Rawnaq could return to Britain for The Ladbroke at Ascot next month following a fine effort in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham. Rawnaq (left): Heading to Ascot Trainer Matthew Smith is considering the big handicap hurdle at the Berkshire track on December 21 after the six-year-old finished third behind Dell' Arca in one of the most competitive races of its type in the first half of the campaign. "I was delighted with him at Cheltenham. He didn't surprise me - I expected a big run," said County Meath-based Smith. "I had expected a big run in the Galway Hurdle but he came back sick. He was only beaten 13 lengths there, but he was a fairly sick horse. "We got him back and gave him two runs on the Flat to sharpen him up and he ran a good race in the November Handicap at Leopardstown before he went to Cheltenham. "We're going to give him an entry at Ascot. There doesn't seem to be a lot for him over here at that time. "All being well we'll bring him back for The Ladbroke

Noel Meade believes the likely fast pace will bring out the best in Very Wood in the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Sunday. Noel Meade: Trains Very Wood The four-year-old won a point-to-point and a bumper at the Punchestown Festival when trained by Gordon Elliott last season and made a winning debut over hurdles for Meade at Galway in late October. He suffered an odds-on Navan reverse at the hands of Minella Foru, who reopposes this weekend, but Meade is hopeful his charge can turn the form around. Meade said: "There's a few more runners, which won't do us any harm I don't think as the last day he ended up in front and it turned into a bit of a mess. "Hopefully they'll go a bit more of a gallop on Sunday, which will suit our horse and we'll see what happens from there. "He's in good form, but obviously it looks a good race. "The Tullow Tank is probably the one we all have to beat." Gigginstown House Stud are also represented by Somethingwonderful, but trainer Dessie Hughes admits his charge is likely to struggle at this level. "He's in good form. He wouldn't look to have much chance on ratings, but we'll give it a go and see what happens," said Hughes. Owner Barry Connell felt The Tullow Tank fully deserved to be supplemented. Trained by Philip Fenton, the five-year-old showed a smart turn of foot to beat the highly-regarded Turnandgo at Naas earlier this month. Having run in a couple of hurdle races last season before going back to win a bumper, Connell feels that extra experience will stand him in good stead. "He just got caught in a pocket the last day and we thought he was beaten," said Connell. "Thankfully he got out, though, and showed a nice turn of foot to win. I think it helped he'd had those two previous runs over hurdles. "In Ireland you can run over hurdles twice and still go back and run in a bumper and I think that experience he gained running in good races was invaluable. His bumper form was also very strong and I felt he deserved to take his chance." Willie Mullins has three runners in Alonso, Arctic Fire and Renneti. The aforementioned Minella Foru and Jessica Harrington's smart mare Gambling Girl also feature in a 10-runner field.

Galway Plate hero Carlingford Lough looks to make the most of his experience as he faces some talented opponents in the Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse on Sunday. Carlingford Lough: Plenty of experience John Kiely's charge has made no less than 10 appearances over fences and followed up his Galway heroics with an excellent run to finish second in the Kerry National at Listowel in mid-September. Those efforts in big-field handicaps are likely to stand him in good stead as he steps up to Grade One level against just five opponents this weekend, but Frank Berry, racing manager to owner JP McManus, feels the seven-year-old could be vulnerable to less exposed rivals. Berry said: "He's had a good summer and has lots of experience, but he could be taking on some of the stars of the future on Sunday. "It's a difficult one to gauge, but our horse is well and it's great that he's still a novice as it gives him a bit more of a chance. "Hopefully he'll run a nice race, but he is taking on some very nice horses." Among the opposition are Gigginstown House Stud-owned duo Don Cossack and Road To Riches. Gordon Elliott's Don Cossack was only narrowly denied by Grade One winner Morning Assembly at Punchestown a fortnight ago, while the Noel Meade-trained Road To Riches won nicely on his only chase start at Naas. Gigginstown's racing manager, Eddie O'Leary, said: "It looks a very good race and hopefully one of them is lucky. "I'd say Don Cossack was outstayed by a very good horse the last day. Our horse jumped almost too well and we're coming back in trip with him. "We were all very impressed with Road To Riches in Naas. This is a tougher race, so let's see how he goes." Gordon Elliott believes Don Cossack will have to raise his game if he is to claim victory. After three brilliant displays in the bumper sphere, the six-year-old was expected to take high rank in the novice hurdling division last term, but failed to make a significant impact. The giant gelding was always likely to fair better over the larger obstacles, however, and after making a winning debut over fences at Galway, he pushed Morning Assembly all the way in a thrilling Grade Two prize at Punchestown a fortnight ago. Elliott is keeping his fingers crossed his pride and joy can find the necessary progress to claim Grade One honours this weekend. "He seems to have come out of his last run well. He just got touched off by a Grade One winner, so he hasn't done a lot wrong," said the trainer. "I think he'll have to improve again to be winning on Sunday, so we'll see what happens. We're happy with him at home." Road To Riches who won his only start over fences at Naas and his trainer Noel Meade said: "He's in good form and we've been happy with him since Naas, so all is well. It looks a very good race and we just have to hope he's up to this level. We'll find out on Sunday, anyway." Sizing Rio has won his first two starts over fences, at Tipperary and Cork, and deserves the chance to test his powers at the highest level. Trainer Henry de Bromhead said: "We're going up into a Grade One now, so we'll see where we stand, but he seems in good form. The ground is nice and we're happy to let him take his chance. "He won a Grade Three over hurdles and is still only a five-year-old, so he is still very young horse. I don't want to rush him as he has already achieved quite a bit in a short space of time." Also on a hat-trick is Art Of Logistics, but trainer Dessie Hughes is under no illusions about the task in hand. Hughes said: "He's in the deep end now but he goes there in great shape. The track will suit him and the ground is in his favour, so it's just a question of whether he's good enough. We'll find out on Sunday." The six-runner field is completed by likely outsider Clar Na Mionn.

12.05, first race
The Stewards gave permission for fence number 4 to be omitted from this race due to the low sun.
30/11/2013
Bangor-on-Dee, 30 November 2013
Following concerns raised by the jockeys regarding the low sun, the Stewards gave permission for both fences and hurdles in the back straight to be omitted in the second, third, fourth and fifth races.
2.35, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Sean Quinlan, the rider of BEAUBOREEN (IRE), placed second, from approaching the second last hurdle. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level and in the incorrect place. The Stewards suspended Quinlan for 4 days as follows: Saturday 14, Sunday 15, Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 December 2013.
30/11/2013
Newbury, 30 November 2013
Following reports of an alleged altercation in the changing room at Newbury on Friday 29 November, 2013, between the jockeys, Dominic Elsworth and Timmy Murphy, the Stewards called before them Elsworth, together with Paul Struthers, Chief Executive of the Professional Jockeys’ Association and Chris Maude, the valet. They were unable to interview Murphy owing to his injuries. Having heard their evidence they adjourned the enquiry to Wincanton on Thursday 5 December 2013.
1.20, third race
The Stewards noted that SOLIX (FR), placed sixth, had interfered with the winner, TATENEN (FR), who in turn interfered with HECTOR’S CHOICE (FR), unplaced, who in turn interfered with RENDL BEACH (IRE), which was pulled up, on the bend turning out of the back straight, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

12,45, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, CLASSIC CASE (IRE), ridden by Will Kennedy, and trained by Ian Williams, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the horses in the yard are showing much better form this season and that CLASSIC CASE (IRE) had jumped poorly last time and had benefitted from being re-schooled. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of CLASSIC CASE (IRE) could be reviewed.
1.15, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approximately three furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, KNOCKANRAWLEY (IRE), ridden by Tom Bellamy, had interfered with A TAIL OF INTRIGUE (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Will Kennedy. They found the interference was accidental.
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Mr Robert Hawker, the rider, had brought a safety vest that had been modified onto the racecourse. Having heard his evidence they found him in breach of Rule (D)36.2 and fined him £290.
2.50, sixth race
The Stewards gave permission for all three fences in the home straight to be omitted due to the low sun.

Wolverhampton, 30 November 2013
6.20, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mark Coumbe, the rider of KINKOHYO, unplaced, from rounding the bend into the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they accepted his explanation and found him not in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2.
7.50, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the start. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that FLYING APPLAUSE, unplaced, ridden by Robert Winston, had interfered with FIRST GLANCE, unplaced, ridden by Andrew Mullen. The Stewards found Winston in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to drift towards the rail when not sufficiently clear. They suspended him for 3 days as follows: Saturday 14, Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 December 2013.
8.50, seventh race
The Stewards noted that CELESTIAL DAWN, placed third, had interfered with BLUE NOODLES, unplaced, which in turn interfered with AMELIA JAY, unplaced, approximately 6 furlongs out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved CELESTIAL DAWN’s placing.
9.20, eighth race
The Stewards noted that KNOCKAMANY BENDS (IRE), unplaced, had interfered with PURLEY QUEEN (IRE), unplaced, inside the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
