14:00 Thursday 14th November Racing Tips - 14/11/2013
Don Pooleoni has to be considered a risky bet today at Taunton but he must win a race before too long and can do so off a lowly mark of 107. He has fallen on his last 2 starts, both over fences and the most recent on debut for Harry Fry, but can hopefully get his confidence back today over hurdles. His second to Romeo Americo, 2nd in the Lanzarote Hurdle last term, back in June 2012 puts him right up there for this if producing a clear round. He is unraced on the ground but his sire was a good ground winner and his dam placed on good to firm so it shouldn't inconvenience him at 9/2. His price makes more appeal than that of the likeable Uriah Heep, though both yards are in fine form. At a bigger price both Foxes Bridge and Backhomeinderry are of interest dropping back in trip. The former was 6 lengths behind the impressive Montefeltro last time and could be leniently treated off a mark of 104. It may be a touch sharp for him hough and Liam Treadwell's mount should be better suited by the trip. 2nd to Key To Milan who went on to perform off 8lb higher, he was then 2nd to Sidney Melbourne on a return to 2 miles and that runner competes off a mark approaching 130. He handles the ground and looks underestimated in amongst some bigger names at 20/1. Taunton 13.40 - Don Pooleoni 1pt win Taunton 13.40 - Backhomeinderry 1pt e/w
I really feel that the market has got it wrong for the Weatyerbys 2014 Point To Point Annual Handicap Chase at Ludlow. Yes Rydalis deserves to be at the head of the market but 9/4 is a terrible price about a mare that seemingly wants cut in the ground. She tends to get headed after gamely leading the field and the same looks likely today over the furthest she has run. 115 was her mark when dead heating here in January but it's more competitive this afternoon and I'll be surprised if she wins. Jayandbee steps up in class but hasn't won since taking a modest race at Newton Abbot and he is somehow 7/2. The one that should be a fair bit closer to them in the market and the only one worth supporting is Lava Lamp at 17/2. He is 4lb lower than his highest winning hurdles mark and seemingly goes on any ground bar the extremities. His opening chase effort was disappointing but he put that right last time here over 2 and a half miles when staying on from way back to win off 5lb lower. 2nd here on his only other start, the trip is something of an unknown but the way he saw his race out last time and over 2 miles 6 furlongs in May is encouraging. Ludlow 14.00 - Lava Lamp 1pt e/w

John McCririck on the cost of his employment tribunal "It's cost a six-figure sum, and we'll probably have to equity mortgage the house but that sort of thing happens and I couldn't live with myself if I had taken it lying down."

Channel 4 Head of Sport Jamie Aitchison has robustly defended the performance of racing on the network in the face of criticism, misplaced in his view, over declining average audiences. TV star Sprinter Sacre poses for his public In its first year of a four-year rights agreement with British racecourses to broadcast all of the best fixtures, a contract which effectively ended BBC TV's involvement with the sport, year-on-year average average audiences have fallen by five per cent from 2012 to 2013, a figure which has improved considerably from a sluggish start in the first couple of months. But the overall picture is far rosier than some critics have suggested, according to Aitchison, who attacked reports that have claimed audience falls of 50 per cent and bigger. "There has been a lot of claptrap written, which has been very frustrating," he told an audience of industry and track executives at the annual Racecourse Association Showcase seminar at Lingfield Park. "You hear so much rubbish on course about it. It is annoying that people keep judging us on just one thing. "Because we are broadcasting for 30 or 40 minutes longer than used to be the case, our average audience figures are being affected because of the way they are calculated. "When you look at the total number of viewers we have had across the year, because we are broadcasting more days of racing, that figure is actually up 11 per cent year-on-year." Forthright in his support for the IMG production team who took over racing on the network from the start of the year and the "top-class" team of presenters assembled at the same time, Aitchison said that Channel 4 plan to expand their coverage of live racing further in 2014, broadcasting 258 hours of terrestrial coverage across 90 days. He added that work would continue on developing the use of features such as sectional timing and the jockeys' helmet camera which recently provided astonishing pictures as champion jockey Richard Hughes took part in racing at Ascot and Doncaster. "This is the sort of thing that takes racing outside racing," he said. "All credit to the British Horseracing Authority and the Professional Jockeys Association for working with us on it. "We've had jockeys tweeting us saying 'I'll wear it' and that's what you want. "The ultimate aim will be to have it in use in a jumps race, and perhaps even so that you could switch live between a general shot and a picture from the camera. Hopefully we can do that in 2014 although that might be a bit ambitious." Where Aitchison did admit that work might be needed was with the Morning Line, with audience figures faring marginally worse than the principal broadcasts. Describing the programme as "slightly problematic", he nevertheless emphasised that viewing figures had always been volatile for the programme and that they remained ahead of two of the previous six years. "We're working with some very experienced TV professionals and hopefully we'll move it forward," he said, hinting that criticisms that the programme had moved away from it's traditional 'odds and preview' format to a more magazine-style format would be taken on board. "There will be 63 Morning Lines next year, but what we might need to do is better balance the feature content, some of which I think has been excellent, and how much you just talk about the racing that day."

Trainer Jonjo O'Neill should learn a lot more about Taquin Du Seuil's capabilities as a jumper after his clash with Oscar Whisky at Cheltenham on Friday. Taquin Du Seuil: Ready to take on Oscar Whisky The Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase is usually a good starting point for future stars over fences and has been won by the likes of Dynaste, Imperial Commander and Denman in recent years. Nicky Henderson's Oscar Whisky is one of the highest profile of this season's intake of budding chasers as a multiple winner of Graded hurdles, even if he went off the boil when stretched to three miles in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle before being unable to repeat his Aintree Hurdle victories in 2011 and 2012. Taquin Du Seuil, though, was good enough to win both the Winter and Challow novices' hurdles and has already been tried out over the larger obstacles when cruising home at long odds-on in a small field at Ffos Las last month. There are only four runners again here and O'Neill said: "We were pleased we got a bit of experience into him at Ffos Las, but this is a very different task for him against Oscar Whisky. "He's in good form, everything has gone well since his first run, and let's hope he runs well." Dai Walters, owner of Oscar Whisky, revealed last week that his horse was working well ahead of this engagement: "He's in good form and Nicky tells me he is jumping well, so fingers crossed all goes nicely at Cheltenham." Also lining up are the Rebecca Curtis-trained The Romford Pele, who was a respectable second to Balder Succes at Chepstow, and The Cockney Mackem, who has more chasing experience but fell at the course last time.

Enda Bolger accepts his two contenders in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham on Friday are running for place money. Balthazar King: A good thing? The County Limerick trainer made the race his own with popular performers such as Spot Thedifference, who took this prize four years in a row (2004-07) and Garde Champetre (2009), but has not fared so well recently. Though he continues his support for the three-mile-seven-furlong event with Zest For Life and Quiscover Fontaine, Bolger believes the Philip Hobbs-trained Balthazar King is the one to beat. He said: "I've two runners, but I think we're a bit out of our depth. Quiscover Fontaine had a run in a point-to-point a couple of weeks ago and he was a well-beaten second. "It's his first time in a cross-country race so it's a bit up in the air with him. Zest For Life may have an each-way chance. He was going well in the Pardubikca only just unfortunately he slipped and lost his jockey. "He'd be each-way chance, that's all. I find Balthazar King looks a good thing." Balthazar King was runner-up 12 months ago behind the Willie Mullins-trained Uncle Junior, who bids to capture this race for a third consecutive time. Chicago Grey from Gordon Elliott's stable and Denis Murphy's Theroadtocroker are other Irish-based runners in an 11-strong field. Connections of the Nick Williams-trained Diamond Harry hope the 2010 Hennessy hero will take to this discipline after having his problems over the last couple of years. "It's quite a strong field. He's well but you don't know what's going to happen until a horse has run three miles, seven furlongs," said owner Paul Duffy. "By all accounts from the trainer he's in very good nick, so we're hopeful. Obviously he had his wind operation and we're trying him over the cross-country because it puts less of a pressure on it. "He's had two goes at it in France had performed creditably. He likes the variety, so we go into it with a clean sheet of paper and see what happens. "We hope it's the start of a new career for him because if he goes well we can look at the cross country in December and there are races in France which Nick is good at picking out."

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mr J Bargary, the rider of BEST LOVER (FR), pulled up, during the first circuit. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip without giving BEST LOVER (FR) time to respond. The Stewards suspended Mr J Bargary for 3 days as follows: to be notified by the British Horseracing Authority.
14/11/2013
Southwell, 14 November 2013
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Raceday Integrity Officer that he had observed Josh Doyle using his mobile phone outside the designated area. They interviewed the rider and the Raceday Integrity Officer. Having heard their evidence the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)33.1 and fined him £290.
1.50, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Veterinary Officer that WINTERWELL (USA), trained by David O’Meara, had no record of vaccinations in its passport and therefore could not run. Having heard the evidence of the trainer’s representative, they found O’Meara in breach of Rule (E)18.2 and fined him £650.
2.20, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of STRANDFIELD BAY (IRE), ridden by Paul Quinn and trained by Sharon Watt, which appeared to be tenderly ridden in the final one and a half furlongs to finish sixth, beaten 10 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to jump out, ride the mare as he found her and finish as close as he could. The trainer confirmed these instructions and stated that she was happy with the ride given. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
2.50, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Joe Doyle, the rider of UPPER LAMBOURN (IRE), unplaced, had used his whip behind the saddle in the forehand position, rounding the bend into the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Rule (B)54.2 and guilty of improper riding in that he had used his whip contrary to the Conditions of the Race. They suspended him for 7 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority.
14/11/2013
Taunton, 14 November 2013
1.10, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of PUERTO AZUL (IRE), ridden by Micheal Nolan, which caused TRANSFER, ridden by A.P. McCoy to be brought down, half way down the back straight. They were unable to interview Nolan owing to his injuries. Having viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by PUERTO AZUL (IRE) clipping heels. Being satisfied the incident was accidental, the Stewards took no further action.
3.40, sixth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MILOSAM (IRE), ridden by Tom O’Brien, and trained by Philip Hobbs, compared with its previous run at Wincanton on 17 October 2013, where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the trainer’s explanation that MILOSAM (IRE) benefited from the re-fitting of cheek pieces and a drop in class. They ordered MILOSAM (IRE) to be routine tested.
4.10, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into two possible incidents of interference. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race in the first incident, down the back straight, they found that MINELLA SCAMP (IRE), placed third, ridden by Tom Scudamore, had interfered with MR BRIDGER, placed fourth, ridden by Daryl Jacob. In the second incident, on the bend turning into the home straight, they found that MR BRIDGER had interfered with MINELLA SCAMP (IRE). In both incidents they found the interference was accidental.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of SUTES, ridden by Michael Byrne, on the bend turning out of the home straight. They interviewed Byrne. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the gelding slipping up. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved the Stewards took no further action.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
ADAM KIRBY - Whip Referral
WOLVERHAMPTON FIRST NOVEMBER (AWT) (TWILIGHT) MEETING 2013 The 32Red.com Novice Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 7 November 2013 held an enquiry to establish whether or not Adam Kirby, the rider of the winner TOAST OF NEW YORK (USA), had committed a breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 of the Rules of Racing concerning his use of the whip when riding in the 32Red.com Novice Stakes at Wolverhampton on 1 November 2013. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Wolverhampton Stewards following an enquiry on the same day because this was Kirby’s fifth offence of mis-use of the whip, warranting a suspension of between 2 to 6 days, in the last 6 months.
The Panel heard submissions from Kirby’s legally representative, and viewed video recordings of the race.
The Panel accepted Kirby’s admission that he was guilty of misuse of the whip in that he had used his whip on his horse that was clearly winning.
Taking into account that Kirby:
i) had committed five whip breaches (3 x 2 days and 2 x 4 days), since 1 July 2013; and
ii) had had 358 rides over this period
it suspended him from riding for 18 days, of which 6 days will be deferred for 2 months until 28 January 2014. The suspension will run from Friday 15 November until 28 November 2013 inclusive on days on which flat racing is scheduled to take place. ===================================================================================
Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
SILVESTRE DE SOUSA - Whip Referral
DONCASTER FIRST NOVEMBER MEETING 2013
The betfred.com Nursery Handicap Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 14 November 2013 held an enquiry to establish whether or not Silvestre De Sousa had committed a breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 of the Rules of Racing concerning his use of the whip when riding TORCHLIGHTER (IRE), placed second, in the betfred.com Nursery Handicap Stakes at Doncaster on 9 November 2013. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Doncaster Stewards following an enquiry on the same day because this was De Sousa’s fifth offence of mis-use of the whip, warranting a suspension of between 2 to 6 days, in the last 6 months.
The Panel heard submissions from De Sousa’s legal representative, and viewed video recordings of the race.
The Panel accepted De Sousa’s admission that he was guilty of misuse of the whip in that he had used his whip on his horse above the permitted level. It considered that the breach would have warranted a suspension of 2 days.
Taking into account that De Sousa:
i) had committed five whip breaches (5 x 2 days), since 14 June 2013; and
ii) had had 558 rides over this period
it suspended him from riding for 14 days, of which 4 days will be deferred for 6 weeks until Tuesday 14 January 2014. The suspension will run from Friday 22 November until Tuesday 3 December 2013 inclusive on days on which flat racing is scheduled to take place.

Put trust in turge
ANAY TURGE (nap, 1.35)
Nigel Hawke’s hope looks on the upgrade and should be at his peak after two runs this term. A turnaround in the weights with Aintree conqueror Eastlake should even things up. Take taquin to score
TAQUIN DU SEUIL (2.05)
All eyes will be on top-notch hurdler Oscar Whisky on his chasing debut but he faces a useful rival in Jonjo O’Neill’s hope. Winner of the Grade One Challow Hurdle last season, he has already recorded a win over fences. Pipe can land gamble
TOP GAMBLE (2.40)
Run in memory of the most significant owner in the history of the Pipe stable so they’ll be desperate to win with their lightly-raced hope. Bank on king to rule
BALTHAZAR KING (3.15)
Uncle Junior beat the selection 11 lengths in this race last year, but today’s faster conditions will suit Richard Johnson’s mount. HOTSPOTS
Work whisper: God's own (Cheltenham, 2.40)
Weighting game: Oh Crick (Cheltenham, 1.35) 7lb below last winning mark
Burnt fingers: Texas rose (Newcastle, 1.15)
Captain heath: Delightfully (Newcastle, 2.15)
Formcast special: Jay bee blue (Lingfield, 1.55)
Wizard: Doctor Hilary (Wolverhampton, 6.30)

15:15 Friday 15th November Racing Tips - 15/11/2013
Tomorrow's 2 mile handicap chase at Cheltenham has only been won by 6 different yards in 10 years. Jonjo O'Neill was successful in 2005 and Eastlake must have a fantastic chance off only 5lb higher than his last win at 7/1. He has a good record with Tony McCoy on top and looks progressive enough to handle what is a tougher contest. Renard is also appealing but not at a similar price to the aforementioned. Elenika could be anything on debut for Venetia Williams given he never fulfilled his potential under Paul Nicholls and should be capable of going close. At a price, the 3 at the bottom of the weights are of appeal and, of them, Have You Seen Me is perhaps in the best form. He goes well fresh and has a chance of controlling this from the front now dropping back to 2 miles on preferred good ground. His last win came over an extra furlong when beating the well regarded Michael Flips (in receipt of plenty of weight) and he should have a win in him of his current mark. Much will depend on whether he's allowed to dominate but he's overpriced at 14/1 and has gone well here before. Cheltenham 13.35 - Eastlake 1pt e/w Cheltenham 13.35 - Have You Seen Me 1pt e/w
As far as the smart novice chase goes I think it's worth backing The Romford Pele after his solid 2nd to Balder Succes last time. That runner looks Arkle material and will be comfortably rated in the mid 150's, which puts the selection closer here than 15/2 would suggest. He certainly doesn't look the likely winner given the presence of Oscar Whisky who is 4 from 4 over hurdles here at the trip. Yet the Henderson runner wasn't in great form last couple of times we saw him and he has an air of fragility about him at 4/6. Taquin De Seuil has to prove himself on good ground under a penalty though he will probably make a better chaser than hurdler. Ultimately I think The Romford Pele will be a 3 mile chaser but is bred for this game and has been a little overlooked against some better hurdlers and bigger names. Cheltenham 14.05 - The Romford Pele 1pt win
There is a very hot handicap hurdle where youngsters should really come to the fore this afternoon. David Pipe sends out Top Gamble and I think he is worth support even as short as 4/1. 2 from 3 under rules, he has only raced on heavy to date but should handle today's ground given he is by Presenting. Sidney Melbourne was a well held 6 lengths behind Connor O'Farrell's mount back in February and he is well worth his high mid-120's mark. 133 for Top Gamble is a stiff ask but he could be very good indeed and leave Class 3 handicaps in is wake. A few at the top of the market make appeal including Whisper and God's Own, while Scarlet Fire is worth noting at a very big price (I'll have a nibble) but the really interesting one at double figures is Warden Hill. He is 16/1 but his Kempton form last time out has worked out incredibly well with Andy Kelly (4th) romping home next time. He was unlucky on penultimate start when flying from the back only to be beaten a nose and, again, that form looks very solid. This is tough but he has a good record with Dominic Elsworth and his price is eye-poppingly good. Cheltenham 14.40 - Top Gamble 2pt win Cheltenham 14.40 - Warden Hill 1pt e/w
7/4 about Balthazar King in the Cross Country is a little bigger than expected on good ground and worth getting behind. Those prominent in the market have a fairly good record in the race and we are due a winning favourite. He won at the festival on his last course and distance start and only succumbed to the ageing Uncle Junior last time due to the cut in the ground. Off level weights with the main dangers it is tough to see him beaten and he goes so well at Cheltenham. Chicago Grey is interesting but shorter than perhaps he should be on first try at this sort of race and the same has to be said for Diamond Harry, though most at Cheltenham tomorrow would love to see him back to somewhere near his best. Cheltenham 15.15 - Balthazar King 3pt win

They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.

Pine Creek heads a pair of runners for Newmarket-based trainer John Ferguson at Cheltenham on Sunday. John Ferguson (r): Set for a busy few days The five-year-old took his record to three wins in five starts over hurdles when landing a highly-competitive Listed event at Ascot when last seen two weeks ago. He now takes his chance in the StanJames.com Greatwood Hurdle, where he is a general 6/1 second-favourite. Ferguson said: "Pine Creek has come out very well from his Ascot win. He's gone up 7lb for that and this will be tough, but he will be competitive." Also taking his chance this weekend will be Sea Lord, who is aiming for a seven-timer over hurdles. He faces his toughest task to date in the Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle, coming up against Punchestown Champion Bumper winner The Liquidator. But the former Mark Johnston-trained Group Three victor, now 31lb higher than his original mark over hurdles, has been the flag-bearer for Ferguson this summer with notable victories at Market Rasen, Perth and Kempton. Ferguson said: "He has bags of experience for a novice, has beaten seasoned horses all summer and the ground should suit him. "There are potentially some very talented newcomers in the field, but he is worth his chance and we are hopeful of a good run." Away from Cheltenham, one-time Classic hope Dubai Prince is a fascinating addition to the hurdling ranks and the former Godolphin inmate could well be seen at Leicester on Monday. Ferguson said: "He is likely to run at Leicester on Monday unless the ground got particularly soft. "He is working very well and has schooled well. The question mark is whether he stays, but he is an exciting prospect and I am really looking forward to running him

Tuesday's jumps meeting at Lingfield is set to go ahead as scheduled after the Surrey course passed an inspection on Friday afternoon. Lingfield: No problems anticipated for Tuesday The condition of an area of the hurdles course that has given cause for concern has improved over the last couple of days, allaying fears of changing the race programme. "A couple of drying days and a bit of wind mean I've seen improvement," said clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross. "It's still heavy ground, but looking ahead at the forecast I was concerned about the rain coming in on Monday, but it doesn't like being too much. "With a couple of further drying days and not too much rain on Monday I think it would be premature to make that switch and we are fit to race over hurdles. If we can run the programme that is in place then that is what we'll do. "The chase course is fine. On the hurdles course there is an area of ground that gets saturated and is very wet. However, I feel there has been improvement over the last couple of days and with a generally dry forecast we are raceable. "The logical thing to do is to persevere with the programme as it is. "It was dry today, it's set to be dry tomorrow and Sunday and it looks like will just light rain on Monday which I'd hope we can manage that and race with the programme as it is."

Richard Hughes is to join Ryan Moore as a second British-based rider in the Longines International Jockeys' Championship in Hong Kong on December 4. Richard Hughes: Joins Ryan Moore in Hong Kong Hughes, who successfully defended his domestic crown last week, will replace the suspended Joao Moreira in the star-studded tournament at Happy Valley, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has announced. Moreira will be sidelined after picking up a three-meeting ban for careless riding aboard Turbo Jewellery in the Victoria Racing Club Trophy at Happy Valley on Wednesday. Hong Kong's executive director of racing William A Nader said: "This is unfortunate news for Joao Moreira, but we are delighted to have a jockey of the highest quality to take his place. "Richard Hughes has won the UK jockeys' championship for the past two years, riding more than 200 winners in 2013 to successfully defend his title. I know that Richard is excited to have the opportunity to take part in the Longines International Jockeys' Championship and we are equally excited to welcome him to the all-star lineup." While Moore is a past winner of this competition, it will be the first time Hughes has taken part and the pair face some of the best jockeys in the world including legendary North American veterans Gary Stevens and Mike Smith. Other riders to receive invitations are Christophe Soumillon, Maxime Guyon, Kerrin McEvoy, Douglas Whyte, Suguru Hamanaka and Mirco Demuro along with two Hong Kong-based jockeys yet to be decided.
