Flemenstar, one of the major names of the Irish jumping scene, makes his seasonal reappearance in the Boylesports.com Fortria Chase at Navan on Sunday. Flemenstar: Pleasing Tony Martin Owner Stephen Curran confirmed in September that his three-times Grade One winner would be leaving Peter Casey and joining the care of Tony Martin. Curran did all of the pre-training himself and Martin has only had him in his care for six weeks, so is just keen to get his season started. Flemenstar ended last season on a low, returning a sick horse after being beaten a long way by Sprinter Sacre at Aintree. "He has done everything well, he has schooled well and galloped well," said Martin. "You don't learn an awful lot about them in six weeks, but I am looking forward to getting him started on Sunday. "He's done a few bits of work and we're quite happy with him. We'll get him out on Sunday and take it from there. We haven't taken him away anywhere but we have got plenty of work into him at home. "I have no plans after Navan. We'll take it one day at a time. We'll get Sunday out of the way first and make a plan after that." Taking him on is Henry de Bromhead's Days Hotel, winner of three Grade Twos last season but was no match for Sprinter Sacre at Punchestown. "He's in good form. It's his first run back and we're looking forward to getting him out," said De Bromhead. "He runs well fresh. He'd a good record over two miles last season, and the softer the ground the better for him over two miles." Gordon Elliott's Realt Mor, a Grade One winner last season, and Denis Cullen's Rubert complete the field.

Trainer Jeremy Scott believes the outcome of the totepool Enter The Ten To Follow Elite Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday will help determine how the rest of the season pans out for Melodic Rendezvous. Melodic Rendezvous: Set for Wincanton The sky looked the limit for the seven-year-old last season when he won the Grade One Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown and followed up by easily dismissing the highly-regarded Puffin Billy at Exeter. However, that was in February and he never ran again after a virus laid low most of Scott's string in the run-up to the big spring meetings. Despite giving weight away to all of his rivals in this Grade Two over two miles, Scott hopes Melodic Rendezvous will still take all the beating. If not, he will be sent novice chasing. "All is well with the horse and hopefully the ground will be soft enough for him," said the Somerset handler. "This race is going to tell us a lot about where we're going with him, but, at the same time, he needed his first run last season and I'm sure he will again. "He's as well as we can get him at home, so we'll just have to see what happens on Saturday and take it from there. Hopefully he can be competitive off this mark. If he can't, then there is not much point carrying on over hurdles and we'll have to go novice chasing. Ultimately, I'll be happy either way." The Elite Hurdle is one of the first opportunities last year's juveniles get to see how they fare against their elders and in the shape of the Paul Nicholls-trained Far West, one of the best of last year's crop takes the test. Second only to the scintillating Our Conor in the Triumph Hurdle in March, he had previously looked very impressive, particularly when beating the six-year-old River Maigue at Ascot. However, the last four-year-old to win this race was the exceptional Well Chief in 2003. "It seems to have been a very long time since March, but we are really looking forward to it," said Dan Downie, racing manager for Far West's owners, the Axom syndicate. "He did very little wrong last season. Obviously Our Conor looked exceptional in the Triumph, but he beat the rest of them. Also, there's a chance he could have been over the top because he was out very early last year. "He showed a lot of speed at Ascot last season, which is why we are starting off here rather than looking at going up in trip. Also, Paul (Nicholls) knows exactly the type which suits this race and he was very keen for him to start off here. "We were in two minds about going to France, but that would have been over further and in very soft ground. The rest of the season depends on how he performs this weekend and we'll see which route we take later. We hope he might come on a good deal." Dr Richard Newland has a knack of improving improving horses bought cheaply from other yards and Ahyaknowyerself is the latest project. No more than a fair handicapper when with Tony Mullins in Ireland, he has won five times since joining Newland and blitzed a decent field in a Market Rasen Listed handicap last time out. "It is a big step up in class for him. He's gone up a lot in the weights and we're going to have to see if he is up to mixing it at this level," said Newland. "He's on level weights with some established horses now. The handicapper put him up 19lb for winning at Market Rasen, so let's hope he's right. "We need to find out whether he can still be competitive off this mark. I hope he can be, in which case we'll carry on over hurdles. If he shows he can't be competitive, then we could go novice chasing. "This race will tell us a lot about which way we're going with him, so we'll see what happens on Saturday. I think the ground is going to be on the easy side of good, which shouldn't inconvenience him. It's just a question of whether he's up to it." Another major player is John Ferguson's Cotton Mill, who had the class to finish second in the Betfair Hurdle on his first start last season and clearly goes very well fresh. The Harry Fry-trained Karinga Dancer, who is chasing a five-timer, is another not to be ruled after he bolted up on his first outing this season at Aintree. Fry was going to go novice chasing with the seven-year-old, but feels it is worth having a crack at this first. Peter Winks' Ruler Of All and the Rebecca Curtis-trained Swnymor, also declared in the November Handicap at Doncaster on the level, which is his first preference, make up the field.

Emma Lavelle believes the handicapper was lenient when reassessing Court By Surprise after his seasonal debut and expects him to give a good account in the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton. Emma Lavelle: Keen on Court By Surprise The eight-year-old reappeared in a competitive handicap at Chepstow four weeks ago and looked all over the winner having jumped for fun at the head of affairs before he was worn down deep inside the final furlong by Peter Bowen's Al Co and Nigel Twiston-Davies' What A Warrior. Even though he was beaten less than a length he was only put up 1lb and Lavelle is thankful he can go back to war off a similar mark with the benefit of a run under his belt. "I very rarely say it but I think the handicapper was quite kind only putting him up a pound for finishing third at Chepstow and he hopefully he has come on for that run," said Lavelle. "He gets in with a perfect weight and hopefully he'll run a big race." Local trainer Colin Tizzard is also feeling bullish about the prospects of Masters Hill, a lightly-raced seven-year-old who sauntered to victory over hurdles 17 days ago. So far his career has been blighted by injury but Tizzard hopes he can now get a clear run at things. "He missed most of last season, which was a shame," said Tizzard. "He won impressively at Chepstow but then picked up a stress fracture of a cannon bone at Cheltenham and we couldn't get him right after that. "Other than an intermediate chase there was nothing else for him and this looks a nice race anyway, there's good money. "People said he looked big before his first run but he doesn't look as big now, he's come on a good bit for the run. He's a very nice horse." Alan King hopes the ground stays decent to allow Pantxoa to run. The six-year-old enjoyed a very fruitful summer and showed he could mix it with the big boys when second at Cheltenham last time out. King expects him to prove even better right-handed. "He is not a horse for winter ground, so I hope the worst of the rain stays away," the Barbury Castle handler told www.alankingracing.co.uk. "He has enjoyed a marvellous season already, going from 119 to 142, and he ran another terrific race when second at Cheltenham last time. He jumps so well, and I am sure going right-handed will suit him even better."

2.55, fifth race
Peter Buchanan, who was declared to ride KILBREE CHIEF (IRE), had failed to arrive in time to weigh out. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £140. Permission was given for Craig Nichol to be substituted.
3.25, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, HAVE YOU HAD YOURS (IRE), ridden by Alistair Findlay and trained by Jane Walton, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding stumbled on the bend and did not jump fluently on his previous run at Carlisle and that she considered this to be a lower grade race today. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of HAVE YO HAD YOURS (IRE) could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested.

Wolverhampton, 8 November 2013
4.14, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that Samantha Bell, the rider of DIAMOND BLUE, had entered the wrong stall. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the start they found her in breach of Rule (D)44.2 and cautioned her as to her future conduct in races.
7.00, sixth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, QUADRIGA (IRE), ridden by Jimmy Quinn and trained by Robert Eddery, compared with its previous run at Kempton on 30 October 2013, where the gelding finished eleventh of fourteen, beaten 12 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding benefitted from the drop back in trip. They ordered QUADRIGA (IRE) to be routine tested.

Musselburgh, 8 November 2013
3.05, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Henry Brooke, the rider of LOS NADIS (GER), placed fourth, from after the fourth last hurdle. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Brooke for 2 days as follows: Friday 22 and Sunday 24 November 2013.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Craig Gallagher, the rider of CAPELLANUS (IRE), placed second, from approaching the final hurdle. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Gallagher for 4 days as follows: Friday 22, Sunday 24, Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 November 2013.
4.05, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approximately one and a half furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that CHIEFTAIN’S CHOICE (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Dougie Costello, had interfered with COOZAN GEORGE, unplaced, ridden by Brian Hughes. The Stewards found Costello in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift left handed without taking sufficient correction. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
ADAM KIRBY - Whip Referral
WOLVERHAMPTON FIRST NOVEMBER (AWT) (TWILIGHT) MEETING 2013 The 32Red.com Novice Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 7 November 2013 held an enquiry to establish whether or not Adam Kirby, the rider of the winner TOAST OF NEW YORK (USA), had committed a breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 of the Rules of Racing concerning his use of the whip when riding in the 32Red.com Novice Stakes at Wolverhampton on 1 November 2013. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Wolverhampton Stewards following an enquiry on the same day because this was Kirby’s fifth offence of mis-use of the whip, warranting a suspension of between 2 to 6 days, in the last 6 months.
The Panel heard submissions from Kirby’s legally representative, and viewed video recordings of the race.
The Panel accepted Kirby’s admission that he was guilty of misuse of the whip in that he had used his whip on his horse that was clearly winning.
Taking into account that Kirby:
i) had committed five whip breaches (3 x 2 days and 2 x 4 days), since 1 July 2013; and
ii) had had 358 rides over this period
it suspended him from riding for 18 days, of which 6 days will be deferred for 2 months until 28 January 2014. The suspension will run from Friday 15 November until 28 November 2013 inclusive on days on which flat racing is scheduled to take place.

NOTEBOOK.
Ascot's meeting last Saturday had some decent racing, and while the opening race, a 2m 4f novices' handicap hurdle, lacked some of the class of the races later on the card, trainer Nigel Hawke's SEDGEMOOR EXPRESS probably ran better than the bare result in finishing fourth, having come from a long way back. Sedgemoor Express has had a busy but successful campaign this season for connections, if at a lower level. Since April and before his latest run at Ascot, he had run 12 times over hurdles, winning twice, at Newton Abbot and Uttoxeter, at a distance of around 2m 3f or so, and all his best form had been achieved on decent, good ground. This latest run at Ascot represented a much stiffer test for Sedge- moor Express, when he faced better horses and in greater numbers, on a galloping track and on ground that was probably more testing than the official good-soft going description. Despite the question marks, Sedgemoor Express, who has progressed gently this season, had some each way appeal and was backed into 9/1 from 10/1. He arguably justified his support by performing best of those held up at the rear, by coming through from the rear from the third-last to take fourth after the last. The first three home had already gone clear by this point, and had all been ridden much more prominently through the race. In the circumstances, Sedgemoor Express ran with some credit and looks to have some po- tential off his current handicap mark of 107. The Paul Nicholls-trained VAROM looks capable of winning a novice hurdle somewhere this sea- son before maybe going into handicaps, judging on his fair performance when second in the 2m ½f novices' hurdle at Wetherby. The winner of a 1m 4f bumper in France in the summer of 2012, Varom moved to Nicholls for the autumn and made a satisfactory start to pro- ceedings when third behind Runswick Royal in a Haydock bumper on soft ground in November. That form was upheld at a decent level, with the winner later placed in the Grade 1 race for four- year-olds at Aintree's Grand National meeting. Varom didn't race again until this latest start and hurdling debut at Wetherby, and maybe he was just unlucky to bump into an odds-on hotpot of Alan King, whose horses have been in very good form lately. The winner had already set sail by the time Varom came through from midfield, and although he couldn't get on terms with the winner, Varom kept on nicely to finish second, beaten only just over two lengths. He can land a novices' hurdle in due course before going onto better things. Alan King's run of winning form didn't apply to his runner in the West Yorkshire Hurdle, MEDINAS , who actually ran a solid race to finish second be- hind Tidal Bay. Taking into account the winner's higher official rating and penalty, Medinas actu- ally performed better than he should have done, according to the paper form, being beaten only a length. The one question is whether he really gets 3m, having won the Coral Cup and other races around the 2m 4f or 2m 5f trip to this point in his career. Either way, it was a pleasing return to ac- tion and he should make his mark in a Graded hurdle over 2m 4f or further this season.
======================================================================== STAT WATCH.
Among our stats-influenced selections last week was Tidal Bay, whose talent clearly remains undimmed by the passing years and won the West Yorkshire Hurdle at Wetherby at 11/4. Each-way backers would have been rewarded by our two Nicky Henderson-trained selections in the United House Chase, with Triolo D'Alene and Robert Goldback finishing second and third respectively, at 7/1 and 14/1. Hopefully, we can enjoy some more success this Saturday with our selections among the Channel 4-televised races from Doncaster (1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35) and Wincanton (2.05 and 2.40.) With these races split between the Flat and Jumps, let's take a look at the stats for both codes for the past week (to Monday, 4 November.) On the Flat, Silvestre De Sousa hit a purple patch, riding 7 winners and chalking up a very good 23% strike rate, just bettering Adam Kirby's 6 wins and 21%, and just edging out the 22% of Andrea Atzeni. Turning to the Flat trainers, David Evans has been doing very well, with 38% of his runners winning their races, with 5 winning overall, ahead of several trainers who saddled three winners in the same period, including Roger Varian, whose 30% strike rate caught the eye. Over obstacles, Tony McCoy was in as good form as ever as he worked his way towards riding his 4,000th winner, partnering the most winners in the week (8) and recording a strike rate of 32%, narrowly second by that reckoning to the 33% of Aidan Coleman. Sam Twiston- Davies was second by wins. McCoy's form has gone hand-in-hand with that of his main supplier of rides, Jonjo O'Neill, who was the most-winning Jumps trainer of the period (6 wins) ahead of Alan King (5), whose 27% strike rate gave him bragging rights by that measure- ment. There was nothing to separate main trainers' title rivals Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson, who each trained 4 winners and recorded 25% strike rates. The feature race today at Doncaster is the November Handicap, over 1m 4f. Although the race is for horses aged three years or more, there is no discernible trend by age, although it's worth noting that three-year-olds enjoy a 6lb weight concession. Luca Cumani's three-year-old entrant Ajman Bridge is lightly-raced and open to further improvement, should handle the expected soft ground and looks in need of the step up to 1m 4f. Cumani has an 18% strike rate at the course in the past five seasons. Fellow Newmarket trainer John Gosden has won the race twice in the past three seasons, and of his three entrants Thomas Hobson looks interest- ing, as a three-year-old course and distance winner who has progressed this season and is unbeaten on the ground and over distance. At Wincanton, the Elite Hurdle often marks the seasonal debut of Champion Hurdle candidates, with Paul Nicholls' Triumph Hurdle runner-up Far West looking a lively possibility. Unbeaten over distance last season, he has the added reassurance of Nicholls' superb record in the race: the Ditcheat trainer has saddled the winner of the race 4 times in the past 10 years. At the head of the weights, trainer Jeremy Scott's Melodic Rendevous looks inter- esting, having winning form on the expected good-soft ground and over distance, and has winning form at a higher level, after landing the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle last season. ============================================================
Race Ratings 2.05 Wincanton - Saturday, 9 November Rising Stars Novices ́ Chase Grade 2 (Class 1) 2m5f
5F5-01 Black Thunder 17 6 Paul Nicholls 145-rated hurdler who stayed on well last time on his chasing debut to deny Fox Appeal by a neck in a Fontwell beginners' chase (2m 4f). Has claims on that form and, like the runner-up, should improve for the experience, but is 4lb worse off at the weights this time, thanks to a win-penalty. RATING 95 112P-1 Dursey Sound 37 5 Jonjo O ́Neill Progressive novice hurdler last season who won first two starts over hurdles before second to useful win- ner, who was second at Grade 1 level next time. Pulled up after blundering in Grade 2 at Warwick in January, but atoned on seasonal debut when win- ning first time over fences at Bangor. Form of that race not really working out as yet, but Dursey Sound is open to improvement and respected with stable going well. RATING 93 013-52 Fox Appeal 17 6 Emma Lavelle Beat subsequent Coral Cup winner Medinas and Black Thunder over hurdles last season, and finished cam- paign on a rating of 149 at a time when stable wasn't really firing. Stable in fine form now and narrow defeat to Black Thunder on chasing debut last time came on soft ground, which is probably not optimal for Fox Appeal. Could be thereabouts, assuming usual improvement from last time. RATING 97 352F- Gullinbursti 287 7 Emma Lavelle A highly-regarded novice hurdler the season before last, on the back of a second-place to the respected Rocky Greek in a Grade 2 contest and also ran in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle at Aintree, Gullinbursti disappointed as a novice chaser last season, when stable was having an uncharacteristic off-season. Given yard's rejuvenated form of late, he could go well at a price and it’s interesting he has been entered in this race for his seasonal debut. RATING 96 5/223- Meister Eckhart 218 7 Alan King Developed into a useful hurdler last season. Al- though winless last term, he finished in the first three in all three starts, including when behind his stablemate Medinas in the Coral Cup. Finished the campaign on a mark of 150 and that form entitles him to respect on chasing debut here. RATING 96 651PF Next Oasis 48 7 Paul Henderson Way behind many of his potential rivals on hurdles form, but does at least have some chasing experience to his name, including a handicap chase success ear- lier this summer, over 2m 6f at Newton Abbot. That form ticks one box but recent form doesn't inspire confidence and looks unlikely to figure. RATING 89 112P4- Oscar Whisky 219 8 Nicky Henderson Recent media reports suggest this top-flight hurdler has been schooling nicely over fences and connec- tions have been in great form of late. A former win- ner of the Aintree Hurdle, Oscar Whisky is still rated 164 over timber and is the one to beat if all of that form translates to fences. RATING 99 231112 Pantxoa 22 6 Alan King A fair-useful hurdler, Pantxoa switched to fences last season, coming into his own this summer and au- tumn, progressing up to a rating of 142. Just lost out to decent winner last time, at Cheltenham, where Pantxoa made a mistake at the second-last. Bears a 6lb penalty for last two successes in Class 1 to 3 chases, and faces stiffer opposition, but still makes some each-way appeal. RATING 97 2/18-1 Wonderful Charm 15 5 Paul Nicholls Grade 2-placed as a four-year-old hurdler in France, Wonderful Charm made a bright start to his career when winning the Grade 2 Persian War novices hurdle at Chepstow 13 months ago. Wasn't seen again until the Cheltenham Festival, when a beaten eighth in the Grade 1 World Hurdle. Obviously held in plenty of re- gard by connections and latest easy win, on chasing debut at Fakenham, didn't provide too many clues as to his ability. Could go well at a price. RATING 98 262-1 Third Intention 22 6 Colin Tizzard Rated up to 153 as a hurdler, Third Intention main- tained that form over fences last season and was second or third in three Grade 1 novices' chases last season. Finished season with fine second to Dynaste in the Grade 2 Mildmay Chase at Aintree, and returned to action with a bang when winning a decent novices' chase at Cheltenham last time. More to come and arguably the best chaser here, of those with experience. RATING 100 ====================================================
RACING NEWS.
Following Sizing Europe's 13-length defeat in the Champion Chase at Down Royal last Saturday, his trainer Henry De Bromhead says he will now drop back in trip from three miles. A possible target is the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting, before heading to Cheltenham for the Ryanair Chase, rather than the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Down Royal Champion Chase was won by Roi Du Mee, who jumped slickly and delighted his trainer, Gordon Elliott, who described him as "brilliant, brilliant, brilliant." Henry De Bromhead enjoyed better fortune at Cork, where Sizing Rio won the Grade 3 novices' chase, following several illustrious previous winners, including First Lieutenant, Tranquil Sea and Baily Green. Sizing Rio won by an easy 10 lengths and connections have made no firm plans for this season, but expect him to come into his own over three miles. Trainer Kim Bailey enjoyed a high-profile success when his charge Harry Topper landed the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby last Saturday, beating Wayward Prince, who finished runner-up in the race for the second year running. Kim Bailey said of Harry Topper: "He's come an awful long way. He's only six and has his whole career ahead of him." Nicky Henderson's star chaser Long Run finished a well-beaten fourth in the Charlie Hall Chase and produced a dirty scope after the race. Henderson is hopeful that Long Run's malady will soon be overcome and hasn't ruled out the possibility of Long Run running in the Betfair Chase at Haydock later this month, before heading to Kempton for the King George on Boxing Day. British runners enjoyed a number of successes at the Breeders' Cup meeting at Santa Anita, although the John Gosden-trained The Fugue was narrowly denied by Aidan O'Brien's Magician in the Breeders' Cup Turf race, the latter being produced at the last moment by Ryan Moore to win by half a length. Moore also won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on board the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Dank. Fillies' Mile winner Chriselliam provided trainer Charlie Hills with another top-flight victory when victorious in the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies' Turf at Santa Anita, a first win at the meeting for Hills. Other upcoming British trainers who recorded their first wins at the meeting were Godolphin's Charlie Appleby, whose two-year-old Exceed And Excel colt Outstrip landed the Grade 1 race for juvenile colts and geldings, and Swindon- based Jo Hughes, for whom London Bridge won the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Marathon, over 1m 6f. Trainer Paul Nicholls was moved to describe Tidal Bay as "a legend", after the 12-year-old ground down the favourite Medinas to land the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle at Wetherby last Saturday. Tidal Bay, who won the Grade 1 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown last December, will now return to fences with Nicholls currently circling Haydock's Betfair Chase or Newbury's Hennessy Gold Cup for his next run. In Australia, Andrew Balding flew the flag for the British runners at the Melbourne Cup meeting, with Side Glance given a peach of a ride by Jamie Spencer to win the Group 1 Longines Mackinnon Stakes over 1m 2f =============================================================

* The Draw throws up one very interesting statistic * Since 2005 there has been 18 Handicaps at Doncaster * That's only 18 Handicaps that had 16 or more runners * The winners came from the following Stalls * 8 9 20 16 9 20 19 9 15 10 14 9 17 22 10 13 18 10 * Horses drawn 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 had a 0-122 record * I suspect a sharp early bend cuts off the low draws
* Fitness is obviously crucial in this race * Past winners had the following absences * 14 51 22 35 57 35 41 36 26 14 15 7 34 15 41 24 days * In 21 renewals the longest absent winner was 57 days
* All winners had at least 4 runs that season as well * Horses with 1-2-3 runs this season have struggled * The last to do this was back in 1990 * Since then all 89 that tried have failed
* This is the official rating of the last 15 winners * 93 93 97 98 95 97 99 93 97 89 87 75 80 82 105 * Only 1 recent winner was rated 100 or more * No horse rated 100+ won in the previous 14 renewals * All 35 that tried to do this failed
* Horses aged 3 have a 11-129 record since 1990 * The 11 winners had the following official ratings * 97 82 84 97 87 93 73 90 91 91 99 * No 3yo winner had ever ran in Group races before * All 11 winners aged 3 ran within 36 days * The 11 winners aged 3 have these career runs * 9 12 4 13 4 15 6 7 8 8 6 * Most recent 3yo winners were up in class * They all came from Class 3 or lower * Look at 3 year olds from Class 2 or better * Since 1994 these horses were 0-40 * The last 3yo to win from a Class 2 race was 1994 * These days when they win they do so from lower grade * There were 3 past winners aged 3 going up in trip * These three winners had 13 15 8 runs
* Horses aged 4 won 9 races since 1988 * They had the following official ratings * 93 97 98 99 89 75 96 94 70 * They all had at least 9 career starts * Recent 4yo winners had 24 39 21 26 12 15 14 career starts * Be wary of 4yo's who won last time out * Horses aged 4 doing this were 0-40 since 1988 * No filly aged 4 has won this since before 1988 * The 4yo winners all had at least 6 runs this season * None had ran in Group races before * None came from Class 4 or lower (0-55)
* Horses aged 5 have a 4-96 record * They had official ratings of 80 95 93 90 * They had 32 39 12 39 career starts * They all came from 13f or further last time out
* No past winners came from Group races * Its very rare the winner ever raced in Group Class before
* Horses aged 6 or more have a very weak record * In this race they have a 1-91 record * Since 1980 only 2 winners of this race were aged 6 or more
* I looked at horses that came from 10f or shorter * There were 7 winners that did that * Horses Aged 4 or more doing this had a 0-40 record

Hinterland (11/4) won the Crew Clothing Co. Beginners' Chase at Sandown as hot-favourite Grandouet unseated Barry Geraghty at the last. Hinterland: Won at Sandown Nicky Henderson's horse, rated 166 over hurdles, was sent off the 4/11 market leader on his chasing bow following encouraging schooling reports. However, he gave the first two fences plenty of air and didn't look a natural over the larger obstacles at any stage during the contest. Hinterland jumped the second last better and had an advantage when he made a mistake at the final fence, an error that halted his momentum. Ryan Mahon maintained his partnership with Hinterland, though, unlike Barry Geraghty and Grandouet who departed from each other following a mistake of their own at the final fence. Hinterland was handed the race on a plate following the drama and he was five lengths clear of Turn Over Sivola (11/1) at the line. Sky Bet reacted by pushing Grandouet out to 12/1 from 8/1 for the Racing Post Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival and spokesman Michael Shinners said: "His jumping was indifferent and arguably was beat when making a shocking mistake at the last. We go 12/1 from 8s about him for the Arkle."

Richard Hughes was crowned champion jockey for the second time in a ceremony at Doncaster on the final day of the Flat season. Richard Hughes with his trophy Following on from winning the title for the first time 12 months ago, this campaign has been even more memorable for Hughes. He claimed a first Classic victory as Sky Lantern triumphed in the 1000 Guineas for his boss and father-in-law Richard Hannon back in May. Hughes then picked up the spare ride on Ralph Beckett's Talent in the Investec Oaks just a few weeks later and she also ran out an impressive winner. He also became the first rider since Kieren Fallon in 2003 to notch up 200 winners this term, comfortably holding off the title challenge of Ryan Moore. Hughes notched another landmark just last weekend when he rode his first Breeders' Cup winner on the Charlie Hills-trained Chriselliam at Santa Anita in America. The rider was accompanied by his son and daughter, Harvey and Phoebe, to the podium at Doncaster to receive his trophy, after which the champagne flowed and he was hoisted on the shoulders of his weighing-room colleagues. Hughes, who also had his wife Lizzie in attendance, said: "It's a fabulous day and this is why you do it. I wanted to show last year wasn't a fluke. "I went hard early in the year and got my quickest 50 and 100. I thought if I could ride 200 winners, that would nearly clinch it and I did. "I've been on some wonderful horses and I'm under no illusions I wouldn't be champion jockey without the Richard Hannon stable behind me. "My ambition from day one has been to win a Derby. I've haven't had enough rides in it to win it yet. "This is my busiest time of the year. I'm off to South African, Japan, India and Hong Kong. I shall then have three weeks with the family in Barbados and be back in February." Hannon claimed his fifth trainers' title while Jason Hart was named champion apprentice in a field which includes promising youngsters such as Thomas Brown and Oisin Murphy

William Haggas put the finishing touches on a good season when sending out Conduct to win the November Handicap. Having saddled his first century of winners and also broken the million-pound win prize money barrier for the first time, the Newmarket trainer can look back on a good year's work. Conduct's victory came about as the result of a typically patient policy from Haggas, with Conduct having suffered from injury problems throughout his career. However the six-year-old, who was making just the sixth start of his career here, had highlighted his credentials for this contest in a couple of previous appearances this season and turned this contest into a procession in the hands of Seb Sanders. The 8/1 chance could be spotted travelling noticeably well throughout and Sanders weaved his way through the pack to challenge Open Eagle on entering the final furlong, before powering clear to win by five lengths from the staying-on Rio's Rosanna. Open Eagle was third with Bohemian Rhapsody fourth. Sanders said: "He had a shocking draw but he was liking this ground. I won his maiden on him when Sir Michael had him. He handled the conditions well and stayed well - he's done it well." Haggas said: "He's been very fragile, loves soft ground and has been waiting for this step up in trip. "Sir Michael told us what a good horse he was and the treadmill has been the making of him. "He's had a leg (tendon injury) three times but, touching a lot of wood, he's been fine with us." Harry Herbert, racing manager for the owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said: "We thought about retiring him and when he had the leg for the third time, we brought him back to Highclere to find him a home. "Ed Dunlop told me Snow Fairy returned as good as ever after a similar injury and we sent him to a guy in Ireland and it's been a remarkable journey ever since. "To win this having been prepared to pension him off is unbelievable - this game throws everything at you. "All due credit to William and his team
