Red Cadeaux had to settle for second once again as Fiorente claimed the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Ed Dunlop's charge filled the runner-up spot in 2011 and once again found one too good in the Gai Waterhouse-trained winner. The Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos was third with Willie Mullins' Simenon fourth to complete a European clean sweep of the minor honours. Another British raider, Ed Walker's Ruscello, set the early gallop as the Tom Dascombe-trained Brown Panther was another to race prominently in the early stages for the European contingent. Ruscello was still in front with six furlongs to run but the challengers were lining up in behind, with Red Cadeaux, who had to contend with a high draw, poised on the outside of the field turning for home. Fiorente was tracking him though and the pair really started to battle with a furlong to run, with Damien Oliver launching Fiorente on the outside. While Red Cadeaux responded to Gerald Mosse's every urging, Fiorente just had too much in reserve and edged in front at the line. Mount Athos ran a game race up the inside to finish third and hold off Simenon while Marco Botti's Dandino was noted finishing fast in fifth. Oliver was claiming his third Melbourne Cup win following Doriemus in 1995 and Media Puzzle in 2002 while Waterhouse was saddling her first winner of the famous race. The victory was a particular highlight for Oliver, who served a lengthy suspension after admitting backing a rival horse in a race in 2010. He said: "It's amazing, a dream come true. It's really hard to believe. "I'm so rapt right now that I've been part of Gai's first win - she's done so much for racing and it's a great honor for me to help her bring up the first one. "Gai was one of the first people to really get behind me when I came back and I can't thank her enough for helping me get going again. "We've had a bit of luck in our careers but there's nothing better than winning this one. "It's every jockey's dream come true. It's a really special moment," he told At The Races. Waterhouse added: "Didn't he ride him a treat? It was just fantastic - a dream come true. All the people who came up to me and said 'good luck Gai', they're the people I'm thrilled for." Fiorente began life with Sir Michael Stoute and won the 2012 renewal of the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket before being sold at the end of last term. Dunlop was thrilled with Red Cadeaux's performance and hailed the efforts of Mosse. He said: "The jockey has probably given as good a ride as he could without winning a Melbourne Cup. "I'm so proud of the horse. He's older and he's carrying more weight and he's probably run as well, if not better, than when he was second here before. "You never know, he could still come back here next year, but we will certainly be looking at Japan and Hong Kong." Cumani is another to have come agonisingly close to a first British win with both Bauer and Purple Moon finishing second in 2008 and 2007 respectively. Mount Athos was fifth in the race last year and Cumani was pleased with his effort, although he admitted his draw in stall 22 had hardly helped his chance. He said: "He was in the right place and there were no excuses. he's run a great race and finished off well. "It's hard to change the draw now, but I'll certainly be back here next year if I've got the horse." Mullins was similarly satisfied with Simenon and could target the race again next year. "There were no excuses, he was just beaten by a better horse on the day. He was there all the way round," said the Irish handler. "I've no problem coming back and maybe he might have some company." Jockey Richard Hughes added: "He ran a blinder. They kind of quickened a length on me but if I'd gone then it would have been a long way home. "I'm very, very pleased with him." Botti felt the two-mile trip might have stretched Dandino's stamina. He said: "He stayed all right but Ryan (Moore, jockey) said he did get a little tired in the last furlong. "he still ran very well and we could go to Hong Kong." Luca Cumani on Mount Athos "He was in the right place and there were no excuses. he's run a great race and finished off well. It's hard to change the draw now, but I'll certainly be back here next year if I've got the horse." Luca Cumani on Mount Athos Owner Michael Owen reported that Brown Panther was struck into during the race. He tweeted: "8th out of 24 pretty respectable. Proud of him. Just hope he is OK as he has been struck into during the race." He later confirmed that the injury was nothing too severe as he tweeted: "Scan has come back clear. Only superficial gash that requires stitches. We live to fight another day!!!'' Dunaden, winner of the race in 2011, finished down the field. Trainer Mikel Delzangles said: "With the weight he had, he was quite outpaced." Fellow French-trained runner Verema pulled up sharply in the early stages of the race after fracturing her right foreleg and had to be humanely destroyed.

OWNER and professional gambler Stephen Arnold withdrew Brown Pete at Wolverhampton on Monday after the Racing Post revealed he is facing ten counts of laying his horses to lose on Betfair.
The charges were confirmed by the BHA on Monday, after Arnold had earlier been subject to what he described as “a barrage of abuse” on Twitter.
Arnold, 44, admits the offences, but is adamant in each instance he laid the horses for small amounts in order to back them for substantial sums at the best price available with bookmakers.
Professional punter Harry Findlay mounted a similar defence in 2010 after being charged with laying his own horses and was fined £4,500 after his six-month warning-off was quashed by the BHA appeal board.
The ten all-weather races at the centre of the disciplinary inquiry scheduled to be heard on December 5 cover the period between June 18, 2012 and March 15 this year, and involve nine of Arnold’s horses. They include Brown Pete, who was laid to £50 by Arnold when beaten in a race at Lingfield last November.
The charges stem from a BHA investigation into the Brown Pete affair at Wolverhampton last December, when Arnold and his associates won around £130,000 after another three of his horses were withdrawn from a race won by Brown Pete amid claims of transport problems.
Arnold said: “I rang up [BHA investigating officer] Tim Miller and told him I didn’t feel like going to Wolverhampton with Brown Pete when he was the key to the start of all this business. He spoke to Lyn Williams [BHA disciplinary manager], who gave us permission for the horse to be withdrawn because of all the press scrutiny at the moment.
“Had Brown Pete won there would have been even more adverse publicity, and I couldn’t face it after the barrage of abuse I’ve had all day.”
Arnold, who has 21 horses under the Rakebackmypoker.com banner with Violet Jordan, and runs On The Cusp at Southwell on Tuesday, added: “I’m pleased I spoke to the Post to explain my side because all the BHA statement says is I’ve been charged with laying.”

Plumpton, 4 November 2013
12.50, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of INTO THE WIND, ridden by Mr T Addis and trained by Jim Best, which appeared to be tenderly ridden throughout the race to finish tenth, beaten some 56¼ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer who confirmed that on examination he could find no clinical abnormalities. The rider stated his instructions were to drop in, creep into the race and get the mare to finish. The trainer stated that he was not happy with the ride in that the jockey did not put the horse into the race and did not make sufficient effort. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (B)59.4 and guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. They suspended him for 14 days: dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority.
3.30, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference going into the final bend. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that MISTER WISEMAN, placed second, ridden by Mark Quinlan, had interfered with BOBBITS WAY, which was pulled up, ridden by Tom O’Brien. The Stewards found the interference caused BOBBITS WAY, to take the wrong course. They found the interference was accidental.
4.05, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that PHAR AWAY ISLAND (IRE), placed second, ridden by Killian Moore, had interfered with LANDENSTOWN STAR (IRE), placed third, ridden by Patrick Corbett. The Stewards found Moore in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred left. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 November 2013.
04/11/2013
Kempton Park, 4 November 2013
1.05, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Wayne Hutchinson, who was declared to ride MARIET, had, after Jockey Declaration time, informed Weatherbys that he would be unable to take the ride. Having heard his evidence the Stewards found him in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £140. Permission was given for Wayne Kavanagh to be substituted.
1.35, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the bend after the winning post on the first circuit. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found that MR GREY (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, had interfered with HERE I AM (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Sam Thomas. They found the interference was accidental.
2.40, fourth race
The Stewards noted that the winner, GOD’S OWN (IRE), had interfered with GRANDS CRUS (FR), placed fifth, approaching the second-last hurdle, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved GOD’S OWN (IRE)’s placing.

Wolverhampton, 4 November 2013
2.15, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that Adam Kirby, the rider of HAADEETH, had entered the wrong stall. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start they found him in breach of Rule (D)44.2 and cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of PAVERS STAR, ridden by Robert Winston and trained by Noel Wilson, which finished eleventh, beaten 17 ¾ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to bounce out, sit handy and do his best. He added that after making an effort from the bend turning out of the back straight he felt his mount was hanging left under pressure and was losing his action in the home straight, where he felt it was in the gelding’s best interest to ease him down. The trainer stated that he was happy with the ride given to PAVERS STAR, but was disappointed with the run. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

14:50 Tuesday 5th November Racing Tips - 05/11/2013
Cue Card is a decent price tomorrow at Exeter given that he finished just 4 and a half lengths behind the best jumper in the land last time out, albeit over a trip that perhaps suits him more than Sprinter Sacre. He won this race off 15lb lower last year so this is a tougher ask but he did win it by some 26 lengths and had the likes of Menorah in behind. If the rain, and there will be some, is moderate then it's hard to see anything getting close to him but if the ground is worse than soft then William's Wishes cannot be discounted. He is unbeaten over fences and beat no slouch in Champion Court last November, his first race back after nearly 2 years off. He will certainly prefer cut and 9/2 will shorten if the ground is tough going. Back them both and you are almost guaranteed money but the fact that Cue Card is bigger than evens at 11/8 is a real head scratcher and too big to ignore. Exeter 14.50 - Cue Card 3pt win
Tony McCoy has 3 chances today and needs two of them for his 4000. Pick of them for me is Well Hello There but, like plenty in the field for this Handicap Chase, he has some jumping frailties to overcome. He has been helped with a tongue-tie (back on) on his last few starts and is perhaps the more solid over fences in comparison to Gas Line Boy and Kind Of Easy but if the latter two get it right then they are a huge danger. Rydalis was progressive this time last year before a quiet spring but has dropped to her last winning mark (dead heat at Ludlow) and Venetia Williams sent out a recent Ascot treble after a slow start to the season. I'm tempted by Bendant for an each way shout given that he gets on with Paddy Brennan and has serious place claims at 14/1. He handles Exeter and was staying on here over half a mile shorter last time in similar conditions. If he can just jump a little straighter then he will be in the mix off his current mark but he can go wildly right when under pressure. All in all it looks as though the favourite is worth siding with at 7/2 given that he still won with the champ on top on penultimate start having been joined at the last and stumbling over it. He should have plenty of scope for improvement off 9lb higher and the yard are in very good form. Exeter 15.50 - Well Hello There 2pt win

Charlie Longsdon is preparing an exciting team of young horses for next week's The Open at Cheltenham. Charlie Longsdon: Targeting Cheltenham The most high-profile contender is the JP McManus-owned Pendra, out of top-class chaser Mariah Rollins, who jumped impeccably when making a winning chase debut over two miles at Carlisle on October 24. There are a couple of options for the Old Vic five-year-old, including the £32,000 Grade Two Racing Post Arkle Trial Novices' Chase over two miles on the Sunday. Longsdon reported: "I was very happy with Pendra at Carlisle and he could run at The Open. He will certainly be entered for a couple of races there, but it is still early days with him and we will have a better idea later in the week. "We will be looking to step him up in trip at some point, but I need to discuss things with the J P (McManus) team. He is only 50/50 at this stage as there will also be other options for him." Killala Quay is unbeaten over hurdles since joining the Chipping Norton handler. The six-year-old captured a two and a half mile Aintree novices' hurdle by 10 lengths in July and stayed on strongly to land a similar contest by six lengths at Chepstow in October. Longsdon said: "Killala Quay will go to Cheltenham for either the Grade Two Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle (November 16) or the David Johnson Memorial Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (November 15). "He goes nicely at home and has done nothing wrong in two starts, so we will step him up and see how he gets on. "He has got an interesting pedigree as he is out of a five-furlong sprinter and apparently he was mistake. He was a good mistake though and seems to stay well. "Although he has been winning on good ground, he wants soft ground. He wouldn't want it too slow, but definitely on the softer side." Longsdon is eyeing the £20,000 Listed Cheltenham Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race for Wadswick Court, who mowed down Weatherbys Champion Bumper fifth Purple Bay in a competitive contest at Huntingdon last month. Also under consideration for the same race is Our Kaempfer, an effortless winner on his sole start under Rules in a Worcester bumper on October 10. The trainer declared: "The two that could go for the bumper are Wadswick Court and Our Kaempfer. Wadswick Court has won at Hereford and Huntingdon and you don't get many chances to run in such a valuable race at this stage, so he might well go there. "Our Kaempfer won very nicely at Worcester and I think he has bright future, but I won't be rushing him."

Trainer Martin Keighley reports stable star Champion Court in "fantastic form" ahead of the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday week. Champion Court: In fantastic form The eight-year-old has run some of his very best races at Prestbury Park and secured a deserved victory in the Cotswolds when edging out Menorah in the Silver Trophy on his final start of last season. A recent racecourse gallop at Wincanton encouraged Keighley to send his charge straight to the first major handicap of the National Hunt season without the aid of a prep run. He told Racing UK: "He's in fantastic form and I couldn't be happier with him. He had a racecourse gallop at Wincanton after racing the other week and went fantastic, so he's in great nick. "He likes Cheltenham, so hopefully he'll run a big race there."

Middleham Park Racing have high hopes over hurdles for their new purchase Area Fifty One, who has been sent to champion trainer Nicky Henderson. Area Fifty One: Now goes jumping for Nicky Henderson The five-year-old was a decent middle-distance handicapper on the Flat for owner Dr Marwan Koukash and trainer Richard Fahey, and his new connections are hoping he can have an even better career over jumps. The ultimate objective for Area Fifty One is the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham and he could make his National Hunt debut late next month. "We did think of running him in the November Handicap, but we are going to focus on going jumping with him," said Middleham Park's racing manager, Tim Palin. "We saw him at Nicky's on Sunday at an open morning. He did a piece of work on the gallops there. "He probably prefers good ground and will be perfect for the Festivals in the spring as they are generally run on good ground. "If all goes well the Supreme Novices' is his target and there would be a race at Aintree for him. He's rated 103 on the Flat and is perfect as a one-mile-two, one-mile-four horse going jumping. "If he does take to the jumping game he could be top class, even another Overturn. Hopefully we'll see him out around Christmas time."

1.40, third race
The Stewards noted that the winner, HELLBENDER (IRE), had interfered with KHAJAALY (IRE), placed fourth, shortly after the two-furlong marker but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved HELLBENDER (IRE)’s placing.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Paul Pickard, the rider of SILLY BILLY (IRE), placed third, in the final two furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Pickard for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November 2013.

Kempton Park, 5 November 2013
5.00, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference entering the home straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that FREEDOM’S LIGHT, placed second, ridden by William Buick, had interfered with SADDAQA (USA), placed third, ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, who in turn interfered with NEWSREADER (USA), unplaced, ridden by Jim Crowley. They found the interference was accidental.
6.00, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Andrea Atzeni, the rider of UP TIPP, placed second, inside the final two furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Atzeni for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November 2013.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SHAUNAS SPIRIT, ridden by Adam Kirby and trained by Dean Ivory, compared with its previous run at Leicester on 8 October 2013 where the mare finished eleventh of sixteen, beaten 16 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that SHAUNAS SPIRIT had benefitted from stronger handling. They ordered SHAUNAS SPIRIT to be routine tested.
6.30, fifth race
The Starter reported that PRINCESS SPIRIT, trained by Edward Creighton, was unruly in the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
7.30, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that EMKANAAT, trained by Amy Weaver, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test. This being the second occasion within the previous 12 months that EMKANAAT had been reported, the Stewards informed the trainer’s representative that if the gelding were reported for a third time within the same period, EMKANAAT would be prevented from having a stalls test for 6 months.
