Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE - Medical Failure
MUSSELBURGH JULY MEETING 2013
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 31 October 2013 held an enquiry to consider whether or not the Musselburgh Joint Racing Committee, the Managing Executive of Musselburgh Racecourse, had committed a breach of Rule (F)15.2.3 of the Rules of Racing, in the light of BHA General Instruction 11.1 headed “Requirements for the Provision of Racecourse Medical Services”, in that at its medical inspection prior to and during racing on 23 July 2013 the following deficiency was identified:
1. BHAGI 11.1 (para 2(f)) - that the Nurse on duty was not familiar with all the equipment and supplies in the Jockeys’ Medical Room (JMR).
Having considered the evidence, including a written submission on behalf of the Executive from Bill Farnsworth, General Manager, the Panel accepted an admission that it was in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3 in that the Nurse was unable to locate all of the equipment and supplies in the JMR when requested to do so during the medical inspection. However, the Panel accepted that all of the equipment and supplies were present.
The Panel noted that after the incident the Executive had thoroughly analysed how the breach had occurred and reviewed all of its procedures to ensure that there would not be a repeat in the future.
The Panel fined the Executive £4,000.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
YARMOUTH RACECOURSE - Medical Failure
THE EASTERN FESTIVAL MEETING 2013
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 31 October 2013 held an enquiry to consider whether or not Great Yarmouth Racecourse Ltd., the Managing Executive of Great Yarmouth Racecourse, had committed breaches of Rule (F)15.2.3 of the Rules of Racing, in the light of BHA General Instructions 11.1 and 11.2 , headed “Requirements for the Provision of Racecourse Medical Services” and “Responsibilities of Racecourse Medical Officers and Other Medical Staff”, in that at its medical inspection prior to and during racing on 18 September 2013 the following deficiencies were identified:
1. BHAGI 11.1 (para 2(f)) - that the Nurse on duty was not familiar with all the equipment and supplies in the Jockeys’ Medical Room (JMR) (as listed at Annex A to BHAGI 11.2), in that whilst carrying out the check of the equipment and supplies with the inspecting Doctor she was unable to locate a large number of items, and
2. BHAGI 11.2 (para 14) - that the Nurse on duty in the Jockeys’ Medical Room failed to ensure that after commencing her duties (one hour before the first race) all the equipment and supplies were immediately available, in that she did not carry out any form of check of the equipment and supplies and was therefore unfamiliar with their location.
Having considered the evidence, including a written submission on behalf of the Executive from Glenn Tubby, General Manager, the Panel found the Executive to be in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3 in that the procedure in place whereby the Senior Racecourse Medical Officer checked the equipment and supplies prior to the Nurse’s arrival had resulted in her being unaware of what equipment and supplies were in the JMR and where they were located. However, the Panel accepted that all of the equipment and supplies were present.
Taking into account that the Managing Executive had been found in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3 following its meeting on 14 August 2012 in that the Nurse was not familiar with all the equipment and supplies in the JMR, the Panel fined the Executive £10,000.

13:30 Friday 1st November Racing Tips - 01/11/2013
Giovanni Boldoni will look to win the BC Juvenile Turf for Ballydoyle in much the same way that the team has done so in the past 2 years. Drawn 2, Ryan Moore will settle him behind the front 3 or so and it may be a carbon copy of the rides he gave to both Wrote and George Vancouver, drawn 5 and 2 respectively. He should handle quick ground on breeding, should appreciate the step up to a mile and will prove very difficult to beat at 7/2. Outstrip has local boy Mike Smith on top and finished closer to star juvenile Toormore over 7 furlongs than today's favourite could but the Godolohin colt met him on good to soft ground and that may well have been in his favour. He has looked at home on ground with some cut in it and I think this may be a little quick for him. It's tricky to know just what Bobby's Kitten has beaten in relation to the European raiders but he did look very good in a Belmont Grade 3 last time over an extra furlong. Conditions will be ideal but European challengers have a very good record in this and I think it will go to one of them. This is a quick mile on very quick ground though and it may be worth looking at a real speedy type. Last year George Vanconouver completed the mile 6 seconds quicker than Dawn Approach ran in the Guineas and that was quick for Newmarket. Shamshon has plenty of speed and didn't appear to see out 6 furlongs last time. He is not well drawn in 12 but he does have a good chance of getting across given he will likely break well and show early speed. Fast ground is well in his favour, he certainly looked uncomfortable on soft last time, and he is likely to appreciate the step up in trip on breeding. His dam was a mile winner at 2, grand daughter of an Irish Oaks winner and related to plenty of middle distance winners. Hannon, Hughes and Sheikh Joaan have won just about everything else this year and he looks overpriced at 14/1, though everything will need to fall right in running. Santa Anita 21.25 - Shamshon 1pt e/w
It's tempting to put up Raskova again having supported her at Newbury last time and she was a staying on 3rd, finishing best of those from the back of the field that had no chance with a runaway winner. However, at just 6/1, she is more obvious than most with trip and ground clearly fine, and it's difficult to think she is overpriced. She may win but chances are she'll find something that little bit too good again. Squire Osbaldeston is potentially far better than the lot of these but it''s certainly a risk to support him at 7/4 on ground that has seen him withdrawn twice in the last month. He is perhaps very well treated on a mark of 85 but he is as likely to finish last as he is first in unfamiliar conditions. The one that looks underestimated is Unison at 25/1 for a yard that has sent out some big priced places in recent weeks and is due a decent winner. Andrew Mullen rides this colt for the first time and the youngster is clearly at home in the ground. He won on his only start at this trip before looking outpaced on both starts at a mile since. Amulet, who is very progressive, made all last time and Unison had no chance from the back of the field but stayed on encouragingly in the latter stages to suggest a return to 10 furlongs was required. This is tougher than he has faced to date but I'd be surprised if his current mark is way behind the handicapper and he has a better chance than his price suggests. Newmarket 13.30 - Unison 1pt e/w

Trainer Harry Fry is convinced Opening Batsman has been trained to the minute for the United House Gold Cup at Ascot on Saturday. Opening Batsman: Ready to knock up a score at Ascot Last season's Racing Plus Chase winner makes his first appearance since he was pulled up in a Listed race at Aintree on Grand National weekend. Fry felt that blot on an otherwise impressive copybook was down to Opening Batsman having had a long season and believes he is fit enough to do himself justice in this valuable Grade Three handicap chase over three miles. The Dorset handler said: "He's in great form at home and this has been his target since he came back in from his summer break. "He is 8lb higher than winning the Racing Plus Chase. He had another run at Aintree and was pulled up, but that was definitely one run too many for him. "We want to find out if he can be competitive off this mark. If he can, great. We have given him an entry in the Hennessy Gold Cup, but we'll take it one race at a time. "If he can't be competitive on Saturday, we'll have to duck and dive and try and find some suitable races for him. "He is definitely ready for Saturday. He's been well prepared for this race." Big Fella Thanks carries top weight for trainer Tom George, who accepts the 11-year-old has plenty on his plate on his seasonal debut. He said: "It's not going to be easy for him considering he's an 11-year-old on almost a career-high mark, but I suppose that shows you what good form he was in towards the end of last season. "He's in great form at home. I'm thrilled with the old boy, and the plan is to go to Aintree in December for either the Becher Chase or the other race over the National fences (Grand Sefton Chase). "We wanted to get a run into him before that and it was a question of either going down the handicap route or running in the Charlie Hall against horses like Long Run. We chose the easier of the two options." In-form Andover trainer Emma Lavelle saddles Bouggler, who is 10lb higher in the weights following his fine victory in a Listed race at Market Rasen in September. Lavelle said: "He was super at Market Rasen and he came out of that race really well in himself. In an ideal world, a flat track would be perfect for him. Ascot isn't flat, but it isn't as undulating as some courses. "He is up in the weights, but he is really well at the moment. It would be nice to see him do something similar to what he did at Market Rasen." Trainer Venetia Williams wants plenty of dig in the ground for Houblon Des Obeaux, who manfully held his own in top novice company last season. Williams said: "Hopefully the ground will be on the soft side - the softer the ground the better for him. He's in good form and never ran a bad race last season. "He ran so consistently I think the handicapper rated races around him. He didn't win in the second half of the season, but his mark didn't come down." Others of note include Wyck Hill from David Bridgwater's stables and last year's winner Roberto Goldback, trained by Nicky Henderson. Henderson is also represented by last season's Topham Chase scorer Triolo D'Alene, while Al Co and Twirling Magnet have already won this autumn. Same Difference is another intriguing candidate vying for top honours after he finished a game second on his last start in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown in April having previously won at the Cheltenham Festival

Owners and trainers will land a cash bonus if they can field Tony McCoy to notch up his 4000th winner at Musselburgh Racecourse. Musselburgh: Offering a McCoy bonus The East Lothian course kicks off its National Hunt season next week with back-to-back meetings on Thursday and Friday (7/8 Nov) and general manager Bill Farnsworth is keen to see McCoy reach the career win landmark at Musselburgh. Currently sitting on the 3991 mark and just nine short of the incredible record, McCoy has two rides today at Down Royal in Northern Ireland. Farnsworth has pledged a £1000 bonus for both the owner and trainer who can lay the ground for the champion jockey's historic achievement to be recorded at Musselburgh. Bill Farnsworth said: "If a week is a long time in politics it's considerably longer in the racing world but we would love to see AP mark this outstanding career highlight at Musselburgh. "We have good ground, fantastic prize money and quality races on our first two meetings of the jumps season and the crowds will come out to see AP go for his 4000th winner if he has not already succeeded. "We hope owners and trainers will be prompted by this bonus offer when considering entries for next week." • Musselburgh's Saints and Sinners charity meeting on Friday 8 November is a free entry day for all racegoers in an initiative supported by the course's bookmakers.

NOTEBOOK.
The recent storms arrived missed Aintree's re- cent two-day meeting, and while EASTLAKE , the winner of the 2m Class 2 handicap chase on the Sunday, may have preferred some rain, being something of a mudlark, he still ran very well on what was his first run in six months. Trained by Jonjo O'Neill, Eastlake is by Benefi- cial and quietly progressed through last season in handicap chases, winning three times, and ended the campaign on a peak official rating of 135, which he ran off on this latest start at Aintree. All told this was a promising first run of the season and in winning off 135, he may be open to further improvement as the season un- folds. Finishing two places behind Eastlake was the Keith Reveley-trained KINGS GREY , a nine-year- old son of King's Theatre who looked as though he needed the run. After finishing fourth over course and distance last season, in the Grade 3 Red Rum Handicap Chase, Kings Grey won a 2m 5f handicap chase at Southwell, for which the handicapper increased his official rating to 140. One more run soon followed in which Kings Grey was well beaten and he was eased to 139, and ran a fair race off that mark at Ain- tree on this latest outing. He looked set to fin- ish second but for tiring in the closing stages and can be expected to come on for the run. Al- though his current mark is a shade higher than that he last won off, there could be more to come, possibly over further than 2m. Also at Aintree, Sunday's opening race, the in- troductory juvenile hurdle only boasted a field of six runners, but the winner, HAWK HIGH , looked potentially useful. Trained by Tim East- erby and owned by Trevor Hemmings, Hawk High was a winner over the middle-distances and beyond on the Flat, so the sharp confines of the 2m 1f course at Aintree probably would- n't suit him that much, but his Flat form (peak official rating of 80) was amongst the best on offer and, after being outpaced initially, he stayed on well to win by nine lengths. Although Hawk High may have been flattered by his winning margin as the odds-on favourite had disappointed and didn't get involved, the runner-up HALLING'S WISH ran a solid race. A winner last time out at Fontwell, over 2m 3f on his hurdling debut, Halling's Wish may have boasted more hurdling experience than Hawk High, but was rated 30lb his inferior on the Flat. Like the winner, he was also a middle-distance type on the Flat, and may be one to watch out for over a stiff 2m, or further. Back in third place was the Jennie Candlish- trained SLEEPY HAVEN , who ran better than his 40/1 starting price suggested, soon being out- paced on the run-in by Hawk High and then col- lared by Halling's Wish close to the line. Like the runner-up, he had a bit to find with the win- ner on Flat form and this was also his first run in four months. There could be more to come with this run under his belt and for going over further in due course.

STAT WATCH.
We were pleased that the stats should lead us to Kingston Hill, trainer Roger Varian's 7/2 win- ner of the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy last Sat- urday at Doncaster. We hope for more success in Yorkshire this weekend, although over Jumps this time, as Wetherby stages its Charlie Hall Chase meeting. Channel 4 is covering selected races from Wetherby (1.50, 3.00 and 3.35) and also from Ascot (2.10, 2.45 and 3.20.) By the time this newsletter reaches you, multi- ple champion jockey Tony McCoy may well have ridden his 4,000th winner. McCoy has certainly been in great form this season, and in the past week (to Monday, 28 October) he has ridden 11 winners from 27 starts, which led him to a fantastic 40% strike rate. Second to McCoy in the last week is the talented Paddy Brennan, who rode 6 winners and chalked up a superb 32% strike rate, followed in third by Aidan Cole- man (4 wins/22%.) Much of McCoy's success in the last week has gone hand-in-hand with that of the main sup- plier of his rides, Jonjo O'Neill, who saddled 7 winners and whose 36% strike rate was equalled by Gordon Elliott, and almost by Emma Lavelle (33%). Ascot's card looks to be brimming with quality, and the three televised races comprise two Listed races and a Grade 3. The latter is the United House Chase, a Grade 3 handicap over 3m. In this race, Nicky Henderson's entrants Roberto Goldback and Triolo D'Alene are of in- terest. The former won this race two years ago last year, off a mark just 1lb lower, but the latter may be of more interest, having been rejuve- nated by a wind operation earlier this year. Since then he has won the Topham Chase and a decent handicap chase at Huntingdon off a 7lb higher mark next time. He could improve again, is unbeaten at the course and is 2 from 3 on the expected good-soft ground. Hender- son also has won the most races here in the past five seasons and has an excellent 31% strike rate in the past fortnight. In an earlier race at Ascot, the Listed handicap hurdle over 2m, Get Me Out Of Here looks in- teresting for Jonjo O'Neill and Tony McCoy, given the current form of trainer and jockey (who may ride him). Last season, Get Me Out Of Here was being campaigned in Grade 1 races, including over further, and he's interest- ing off his new rating of 152, with 30% and 60% strike rates on the going and over dis- tance respectively. At Wetherby, the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle looks set to be a fascinating contest, including the talented veteran Tidal Bay, last season's top-class staying novice hurdler At Fishers Cross, Cheltenham Festival winner Medinas and Dynaste, who was a Grade 1-winning novice chaser over 3m last season, and high- class over hurdles the season before. Last year's winner, Tidal Bay, has a great record at Wetherby, winning twice and finishing runner- up twice from 5 starts. His trainer Paul Nicholls also has a great record, winning 4 from 9 at the course in the past five seasons. At Fishers Cross looks his main opponent, being un- beaten on the ground and over distance, and carries only a half-penalty of 4lb, compared to the 8lb for Tidal Bay. In the Charlie Hall Chase, the feature race of the day at Wetherby, trainer David Bridgwater looks to have a fair opportunity at the weights with The Giant Bolster, who is 2 from 6 on the ground, and could offer some good each-way value.

Race Ratings 3.10 Wetherby - Saturday, 2 November Bet365 Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2) (Class 1) 3m1f
2411P- Benefficient 42F 7 A J Martin Despite Grade 1 novice chase-winning form in Ire- land, Benefficient was sent off at 20/1 for the Grade 2 Jewsons Chase at Cheltenham. Pulled up at Pun- chestown on final start of season but made satisfac- tory reappearance on Flat last time when fourth over 1m 6f. That run should put him straight for this race and respected on best form, though softening of ground from expected good going would help and steps up to 3m for first time. RATING 97 312U5- Big Fella Thanks 199 11 Tom George Getting on these days but there were some glimpses of his class last season, when third in the Bechers and runner-up in a Grade 3 handicap chase at New- bury. Testing ground would be a help, and a few oth- ers just look a bit more probable. RATING 94 31244 Billie Magern 63 9 Nigel Twiston-Davies A full-brother to former stable star Ollie Magern, who won this race twice a few years ago, and while Billie Magern has yet to scale the heights of his illustrious sibling, he will welcome the good ground and has fairly solid form in decent handicaps to his name, if no winning form in Listed or Graded races. May be outclassed in this company. RATING 93 51155- Cape Tribulation 212 9 Malcolm Jefferson Probably one of the stable's best-ever horses, win- ning Listed and Grade 3 handicap hurdles at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals the season before last, then switched back to fences last term, and won at Grade 3 and Grade 2 level, before finishing a respectable fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Has won over course, going and distance, and could make the frame at a nice price. RATING 96 2213-3 First Lieutenant 16 8 M F Morris One of Ireland's better 3m chasers last season, only finishing outside the first three once (fourth on sea- sonal debut) in six starts in Graded chases, winning the Grade 1 Aintree Bowl on his last start of the campaign. Has had a fine prep run this season over 2m 4f. Major player back up in trip with conditions to suit. RATING 98 111UB- Harry Topper 193 6 Kim Bailey Best some decent sorts in the middle of last season, including Benefficient in a Grade 2 novices' chase at Newbury. Was apparently going well when un- seating in a Listed race at Kelso and brought down in the Champion Novices' Chase at Punchestown. Unexposed, and his stable, who know the time of day at this level, have an excellent 31% strike rate at Wetherby. RATING 97 6/656- Master Of The Hall 266 9 Micky Hammond Formerly with Nicky Henderson to the end of last sea- son, Master Of The Hall was a Grade 2-winning novices' chaser a couple of seasons ago, but has clearly had a couple of issues, and ran just three times last season, including in this race, and was held on each occasion. Has a lot to prove now. RATING 90 3P247- The Giant Bolster 212 8 David Bridgwater Has run some big races at the highest level, but last season was slightly disappointing, having rounded the previous campaign off with second in the Chel- tenham Gold Cup. Was fourth behind Bobs Worth (Long Run third) in last season's Gold Cup, which en- titles him to beat most of these, but looks held by Long Run and First Lieutenant on last season's form. RATING 98 13114- Unioniste 234 5 Paul Nicholls Progressed nicely over fences last year, winning a Grade 3 handicap chase from Walkon at Chel- tenham last December, and wound up season with a fair fourth in the RSA. As one of the youngest con- tenders, there could be more to come, but has quite a lot to find. RATING 96 1P76-5 Wayward Prince 22 9 Hilary Parrott A course and distance winner in a Grade 2 novices' chase three seasons ago, Wayward Prince moved yards for the start of last season. His 33/1 second in this race last year, when 11 lengths behind Silv- inaco Conti, was upheld in a Listed handicap chase at Ascot's Christmas meeting next time. Recent pipe- opener may help things along here, others still pre- ferred though. RATING 95
2132- Long Run 192 8 Nicky Henderson One of the cornerstones of Nicky Henderson's string at Seven Barrows, and although Long Run is now 12lb shy of his peak official rating, he is still performing at a level higher than most of the rivals he could face here today. The one to beat. RATING 100 ==========================================================
RACING NEWS.
The Ed Dunlop-trained Joshua Tree became the first horse to land the Grade 1 Canadian International three times when successful at Canada's Woodbine racecourse last Sunday. This was Joshua Tree's first success for Dunlop's stable, having previously won the race when trained by Aidan O'Brien, and last year, when saddled by Marco Botti. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Joshua Tree beat the US horse Hyper and may now head to Hong Kong before retiring to stud. Kingman, ante-post favourite for next year's 2,000 Guineas, has undergone surgery to have a bone chip removed from a joint. Trainer John Gosden described the injury as "not uncommon", and reported that Kingman would be back in training in the New Year. Jockey Andrea Atzeni recorded his first British Group 1 victory when he rode Kingston Hill to win the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster last Saturday. Trained by Roger Varian, Kingston Hill was supplemented for the race after winning the Group 3 Autumn Stakes on his previous start. He is now quoted at 7/1 for the Derby and between 8/1 and 10/1 for the 2,000 Guineas, although Varian reported that there are no fixed plans for him at this stage. Atzeni said of Kingston Hill: "He's top-class, definitely the best I've sat on so far." The Nicky Henderson-trained star Simonsig will probably miss the King George VI Chase after developing a splint on his near-fore. Last season's winner of the Arkle, Simonsig had been the 4/1 ante-post favourite for the feature race of Kempton's Boxing Day meeting. Retired chasing star Denman, winner of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup and twice successful in Newbury's Hennessy Gold Cup, is recovering from a serious infection. Denman's owner Paul Barber reported that he had spent five months in a Newmarket veterinary hospital recovering from a bone infection and then a blood infection, and is continuing the recovery process in the care of his regular rider Charlotte Alexander. Former Champion Hurdle winner Rock On Ruby may not be seen again on the racecourse this year, according to his trainer Harry Fry. After Rock On Ruby was readily defeated by The New One at Kempton on his reappearance in October, Fry reported that they were considering all options relating to Rock On Ruby's breathing, including cauterising his soft palate, which could mean another eight weeks away from the racecourse. Cooldine, winner of the Grade 1 RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2009, was put down last week after suffering from a severe bout of colic. The 11-year-old son of Beneficial won a total of nine races in his career, also including the Dr P J Moriarty Novices' Chase at Leopardstown. Trainer Steve Gollings reports that this month's Paddy Power Chase at Cheltenham could now be on the cards for his charge Conquisto, following the eight-year-old's victory in the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase at Aintree last weekend. The new All-Weather racing championship, which got underway last Saturday and finishes with a new £1m finale at Lingfield on Good Friday 2014, has met with a positive reaction from jockeys and trainers, with long-time jockey Jimmy Quinn reporting that trainers had brought better- class horses to the championship's opening meeting at Wolverhampton. ===========================================

15:35 Saturday 2nd November Racing Tips - 02/11/2013
Fort Larned returns to defend his crown for the Breeders' Cup Classic this evening and arrives in good form having comfortably made all against lesser opposition at the end of September. This is his first Graded start outside a handicap since his win here last time and he should have the better of last year's 2nd Mucho Macho Man on form given he races of level weights after finishing just behind him on penultimate start but giving 3lb. However, there's not much buzz around him and there is the impression that a repeat of last year's 9/1 success looks unlikely, especially given he should have competition for the lead. Game On Dude disappointed last year but really never got into it from midfield and he'll be more of a threat today. He is unbeaten since and 3/1 is a decent price about a worthy favourite. Maybe it's because we have been exposed to him on these shores but Declaration Of War has been so impressive this term and he looks a very good value bet at 7/1. What is holding his price back a little is the fact he is unraced on the surface but he has a solid dirt pedigree and may be all the better for the switch. There's no question he wasn't himself in the Lockinge but his form since has been impeccable with the only below par effort coming on softish ground at Goodwood. it's also apparent that it was a bit sharp for him that day and, as hinted when staying on behind Moonlight Cloud at Deauville, the step back up to 10 has seen extra improvement. I think he wins this and wins it well and is a steal at his price. Santa Anita 12.35 - Declaration Of War 1pt e/w
I'm surprised First Lieutenant isn't a stronger favourite at Down Royal and deserves support if only because he is 11/4. Yes he has questions to answer and, for all his good form, doesn't actually win that often, but he should be a fair bit clear of these over the trip on what he showed last season. 3rd in the Punchestown Gold Cup, 3rd in the Hennessy, 2nd in the Ryan Air, 2nd in the Lexus and winner of the Betfred Bowl, he should surely be shorter given his closest market rivals are a doubtful stayer and stayer out of form. The latter is last year's winner in Kauto Stone who has gone awol and is a very risky bet at 5/1, though Paul Nicholls has a good record in the race. Sizing Europe is a class act and suffered his only defeats last term at the hands of the best jumper in the world. However, 2 previous attempts at this race have revealed he doesn't see it out and I'm not sure why that should change today. 5/1 maybe of interest but not vying for favouritism with the mount of Davy Russell. The other I like is Mount Benbulben who really got it together at the end of last season and could have a big future ahead of him. He is double the price of the favourite but technically has a fair bit to find, though his Punchestown win was mightily impressive. Down Royal 14.30 - First Lieutenant 2pt win
Ascot probably wins the feature handicap competition across the cards with its United House Gold Cup Handicap Chase. There are plenty on the shortlist and 2 come form the in form Jonjo O'Neill yard. Twirling Magnet has been inconsistent but when he gets it right he really fires and the signs were very good last time. There is just the chance he is better going left-handed though and preference is for stable companion Merry King at 14/1 who ran a stinker in first time cheekpieces at Cheltenham. He has a solid record with today's jockey on top and is back off a mark only 3lb higher than when touched off in a very good handicap on heavy ground at Haydock pre Cheltenham. Better ground should be in his favour today and he could be a second season chaser to keep on the right side of. Buddy Bolero has an obvious chance but is shorter than he should be and the other selection goes to Same Difference at 11/1 Ascot 15.20 - Merry King 1pt e/w Ascot 15.20 - Same Difference 1pt e/w
Already advised: Wetherby 15.35 Harry Topper (8/1) 1pt e/w

Wetherby movers Paddy Power make Cockney Sparrow 11-4 (from 7-2) for the Listed mares hurdle at 1.50. L'Unique is 3-1 (from 7-2) for that, while Medinas is 11-4 (from 7-2) for the Grade 2 hurdle at 3.00, which is without likely favourite At Fishers Cross.

It's a packed schedule for Paul Nicholls this weekend with runners at Ascot, Wetherby, Down Royal and across the water at Auteuil. Read on for his exclusive thoughts on each...
Saturday
13:15 Wetherby - Varom
Won a National Hunt Flat race in the French provinces and made a promising debut for us when third in a 1m5f bumper at Haydock last November, especially as he was carrying a 7lb penalty. Took a while to get over that and was slow to come to hand after Christmas, so we took the patient approach, put him away and kept him as a novice for this season. While his future definitely lies over fences, he has been working and schooling nicely in preparation for his hurdling debut.
14:10 Ascot - Ulck Du Lin
Looked a nice prospect when winning 2m1f handicap chases at Newbury and Ascot last season, but things didn't go to plan in his two starts in the spring. I don't think a mark of 146 is that lenient, and he could need further than this trip now, but he is a horse we like and is in good form for his reappearance. Harry takes 5lb off and the softer the better for him. It is very competitive racing at Ascot today, though.
14:25 Wetherby - Valco De Touzaine
I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with his chasing debut at Newton Abbot, though I remember Edgardo Sol being beaten at that meeting a couple of years ago before improving out of all recognition. So let's hope that this one can do the same. And I don't think that he has had his ground yet. He won on good ground in France, and every time I have run him here it has rained! So I hope that isn't the case again here. I don't think a mark of 135 over fences is overly-generous but hopefully he will have learned a lot from his first start over fences and there is more to come from him. Runs in a tongue tie.
14:30 Down Royal - Kauto Stone
Has won at this meeting for the past two seasons, including when beating First Lieutenant by a length in this race last season. That tells you what a high class horse he is on his day. But he is also infuriating as he never seems to go on from there, and his form tailed off badly on both occasions. I have tweaked his training regime this season, so hopefully that may help and he looks well. I was delighted to hear that it won't be too soft at Down Royal, as he is a small horse who wouldn't be suited by a slog.
14:45 Ascot - Dildar & Saphir Du Rheu
Dildar disappointed us on his last start at Cheltenham in January, but he wasn't quite right afterwards, so we backed off him for the rest of the season. He looks in good form now though, we know that he goes well when fresh and a mark of 130 gives us options. I think he will go well, but ideally he wouldn't want the ground too soft and this is very competitive.
Saphir Du Rheu disappointed in the Fred Winter but we know he is much better than that. And his earlier win in heavy ground at Taunton tells you that if the forecast rain arrives it will be in his favour. He has summered well and I think he is on a fair mark.
15:00 Wetherby - Tidal Bay
Won this race first time up last season, before going on to prove himself one of the best chasers in the country, failing by only three lengths to give Bobs Worth 6lb in the Hennessy and then winning one of the great all-time races when getting up on the line to win the Lexus. Unfortunately, he picked up a small niggle there that he just couldn't shake off for the rest of the season. He is fine now, but this is a tougher renewal than the one he won last year, he will come for it, and you have to think that At Fishers Cross will be very hard to beat. But he is a top class racehorse - in terms of ability, the best in here - don't forget that, even if he is a 12-year-old. He certainly wouldn't mind if it rained.
15:05 Down Royal - Rolling Aces
Was very impressive when beating Opening Batsman by 11 lengths at Wincanton on Boxing Day, but the runner-up reversed the form in receipt of 9lb in the Racing Plus Chase at Kempton. He wasn't quite right for Cheltenham or Aintree, so we left him alone. I like this horse and I hope he can keep up our superb record in this race. We have won the last five runnings with Noland, Herecomesthetruth, The Nightingale, Kauto Stone and Cristal Bonus, so the pressure is on him! I have had this race in mind for him ever since he came in.
15:20 Ascot - There's No Panic
Had a breathing operation in the summer, and this race has been the plan for a while. We kept him busy last season, winning twice and running well in defeat on occasions, and he is a fair horse on his day. He won first time out last season, and I think he is fairly handicapped off 133, with Harry taking off a further 5lb. And I would say 3m with a bit of cut should suit him, too, so I give him a definite each-way chance. He wouldn't want the ground to turn too testing, though.
15:35 Wetherby - Unioniste
Although he slightly disappointed us when only managing to finish fourth in the RSA at Cheltenham, you shouldn't forget that he did exceptionally well to do what he did over fences last season given his age. He became the first ever four-year-old to win the Paul Stewart Ironspine Charity Challenge last December. Yes, that win only came off a mark of 143, with his four-year-old allowance and Harry taking 5lb off, but the manner of his 11 length defeat of Walkon was pretty impressive all the same. And, with another summer on his back, you would be hopeful that he can continue his way up the chasing ladder this season. Whether or not taking on a horse as good as Long Run at this stage of his career, and getting only 4lb, comes a bit too soon for him we will see today. I personally think he is very short in the betting and has a mountain to climb on form! But he certainly goes to Wetherby fit and in good form.
Sunday
Auteuil - Join Together
We weren't expecting a great deal from Join Together on his reappearance at Chepstow last month, as we knew that he would need that pretty badly, as we had this as his early-season target. So, he is a lot fitter here and if he came back to the form of his second to Hello Bud in the Becher in heavy ground last season then he would run a big race in conditions - 3m5f in testing conditions - that really should suit him. He isn't the most consistent admittedly, but he is a very smart staying chaser on his day and he goes to France in good form. Ryan Mahon rides.
