Sidelined jockey Hayley Turner hopes lessons can be learned about the handover of riders to hospitals following injuries at the racecourse after her own recent experience. Hayley Turner: Hopes lessons can be learned She suffered a broken pelvis and vertebrae when Seal Of Approval fell in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster last month but these were missed by medical staff and only came to light when she requested scans herself several weeks after the incident. Turner, who is now expected to return to the saddle in January, told Racing UK: "It's been a catalogue of errors since my fall at the St Leger meeting. "Scans ten days ago revealed that I fractured three vertebrae - two months after my fall. This came on the back of it taking a month to detect I had broken my pelvis. "I know there is a handover from the racecourse doctor to the hospital but more needs to be done," she continued. "The hospital doctors need to be fully briefed on what happened and perhaps even shown a video of the race. They need to understand that a fall from a racehorse is serious compared to falls from other horses. "X-rays often don't show breaks immediately and I should have been referred to have a scan straight away. "The Professional Jockeys' Association tell me that 25% of breaks in vertebrae go unnoticed initially with jockeys. I had no idea what had happened, what parts of me could be broken, so I simply went along with what the doctors said. It was only when I continued to ache and feel pain that I had further scans. "I have spoken to Paul Struthers at the PJA, who says he will examine the procedure and hopefully we can all learn from this."

Fontwell Park, 23 October 2013
2.20, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, EASY BEESY, ridden by Gavin Sheehan and trained by Charles Egerton, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the horse had matured, been suited by the drop in class, and had benefitted from a rest. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of EASY BEESY could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered EASY BEESY to be routine tested.

Worcester, 23 October 2013
3.15, third race
The Stewards’ gave permission for the Open Ditch to be removed for the third race due to it being damaged during the second race.
The Stewards noted that ANOTHER FLUTTER (IRE), placed second, finished the race with only one cheekpiece attached. Having viewed a recording of the race, they were satisfied that the right cheekpiece had worked itself loose and ultimately fell off approaching the last fence in the back straight.
4.20, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of ALLEZ ZANE, , ridden by David England and trained by Giles Smyly, placed sixth, beaten 19 ¾ lengths. The Stewards interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to pop the filly out and be in the first four and to get her home. However, she was unruly in the preliminaries and so he decided to drop her in to try and settle her, but she still ran too freely, jumped very novicey and when asked for an effort two out she found nothing. The trainer confirmed he was happy with the ride given to ALLEZ ZANE, even though it was contrary to his instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
5.30, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of COMBUSTIBLE LADY (IRE), ridden by Andrew Thornton and trained by Seamus Mullins, which finished fourth beaten 28 ¾ lengths. The Stewards interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop the mare in, as he has done in the past when winning on her. He added that she was a bit keen due to the slow early pace but when it picked up he was able to settle her in the rear although he was nudging and squeezing her down the back straight to keep her in touch only passing tiring horses on the run to the line. The trainer confirmed he was happy with the ride given to COMBUSTIBLE LADY (IRE). Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

Kempton Park, 23 October 2013
5.50, first race
Richard Hughes, who was declared to ride PRETTY BUBBLES, had failed to arrive in time to weigh out. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £140. Permission was given for Ryan Moore to be substituted.
6.20, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that interference took place between the winner, MARTIAL ART (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry, and POYLE VINNIE, placed second, ridden by Ryan Powell. The Stewards found both Keniry and Powell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that Keniry had allowed his mount to drift right, and Powell had allowed his mount to drift left. They cautioned them both as to their future conduct in races.
7.20, fourth race
The Stewards noted that PRETEND (IRE), place third, had interfered with SWEET LILY PEA (USA), unplaced, which then interfered with IAN’S MEMORY (USA), placed fourth, which then interfered with SAHARA DESERT (IRE), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved PRETEND (IRE)’s placing.
7.50, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that BOWSTAR, placed second, ridden by Robert Havlin, had interfered with MALAYSIAN BOLEH, placed third, ridden by Harry Bentley, and that the interference had not improved BOWSTAR’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The Stewards found Havlin in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had allowed his filly to hang left. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
8.20, sixth race
The Stewards noted that CLEVER MISS, unplaced, had interfered with BASIL BERRY, unplaced, shortly after the two furlong marker, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
The Stewards noted that MAN AMONGST MEN (IRE), placed second, had interfered with CONSTANTINE, unplaced, approaching half a furlong out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved MAN AMONGST MEN (IRE)’s placing.
9.20, eighth race
The Starter reported that HYPNOTISM, trained by Ronald Harris, was unruly in the stalls and withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MULTITASK, ridden by George Baker and trained by Michael Madgwick, compared with its previous run at Brighton on 8 October 2013 where the gelding finished fourteenth of 15, beaten by 23 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding had benefited by the fitting of a hood for the first time in this race. They ordered MULTITASK to be routine tested.

16:05 Thursday 24th October Racing Tips - 24/10/2013
Another good beginners' chase today sees Pendra a worthy favourite at 5/6. He was sent off the 6/1 favourite at the Cheltenham Festival but hit some trouble in running and didn't really see out the trip upped to 2 miles 5 furlongs. His form on penultimate start when 2nd to the progressive Melodic Rendezvous pus him right up there for this though and he will be hard to beat if taking to this code as well as he did to hurdles. Trusty McCoy is on top, always encouraging in a beginners' chase, and the Longsdon yard has started the year in incredible form. Eduard will be the main danger and he has won over hurdles here. He was beaten by a similar distance behind Melodic Rendezvous in December and was penalised that day. He loos the type for a little further though and if Pendra jumps well at pace, I'm not sure this Nicky Richards 5 year old will be able to match him Carlisle 14.20 - Pendra 3pt win
Having followed Investissement off a cliff on the flat this year, I'm keen to back him over hurdles but not at 11/4 today. He did look rejuvenated last time and the yard is firing but Moscow Me had the measure of him that day and I'm not sure the 6lb pull is enough to get Richard Johnson's mount the vote. The danger to Moscow Me will be if they don't go all that quick as he sometimes takes a while to settle but he does look a safe bet at 6/1. The one to take a chance on though may be Swiss Art at 16/1 for a yard that have started the season well. His last win came off 6lb lower on heavy ground in this class but he does have a good to firm win to his name and there should be no ground concerns today. He does often need a run so preference would be for this to come after an outing but then he wouldn't be the price he is. Callum Bewley takes the ride and is an improving jockey who has already ridden 6 winners from 42 starts this term and takes off a useful 7lb. The horse may well find something too good but he still should have a win in him in this class of his current mark. Southwell 16.05 - Swiss Art 1pt e/w

Al Basti Equiworld has become The Racecourse Newbury's newest commercial partner with the announcement of a three-year agreement incorporating races and stable staff awards worth almost £500,000. Newbury: New commercial partner Free £5 bet every week Beginning in April 2014, 18 Flat races will carry the Al Basti Equiworld brand significantly boosting prize money for these races. The most prominent among the portfolio is the Group Three Al Basti Equiworld Stakes (registered as the Hackwood Stakes), one of four races supported by the company at the two-day July fixture. Stable staff are set to benefit from the sponsorship to the tune of almost £60,000 over the contract period. Al Basti Equiworld will provide a cash prize of £100 for the groom leading up the best turned out horse in every race under both codes in addition to any prize that may already exist. Racehorse owner and Al Basti Equiworld founder Malih Al Basti enjoyed his best season in the UK in 2009 with 17 winners. That year also saw the Dubai-based businessman's colours carried into second place in Newbury's Group Two Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes by Angel's Pursuit who returned to the Berkshire course the following year to win the Listed Carnarvon Stakes. He said, "We are very pleased to be extending our international horseracing sponsorship portfolio to include races at Newbury. It is a course that I always enjoy visiting and we are very pleased to be supporting its continued growth." Al Basti Equiworld distributes a wide range of feeds, feed supplements and veterinary products in the Middle East and among them many leading UK brands including Baileys Horse Feeds, Blue Chip Horse Feeds, Charnwood, My Day Feeds and Wendals Herbs. "The UK is important to our business. It's where we source many of our most popular products, and it stages some of the best racing in the world which is why Al Basti Equiworld is proud to be associated with British racing in this way", he added. Al Basti Equiworld's on-course profile will be boosted by year-round adverting sites on fences during the jumps season, starting in November 2013, and perimeter advertising on the Flat. Stephen Higgins Managing Director Racecourse and Events said, "We are delighted to have had the opportunity to create a sponsorship programme for Al Basti Equiworld that endorses the company's ambition to recognise and support the racing industry at all levels. "This new sponsorship is the result of our ever growing association with the business community in the Middle East, and demonstrates that by forming close relationships and a deeper understanding of a sponsors requirements, this type of commercial arrangement is possible. "Al Basti Equiworld races will be staged at The Racecourse every month between April and October. We look forward to seeing Mr Al Basti here and, hopefully, we will be joining him in celebrating his horses' successes here in the seasons to come."

Richard Hannon will rely on Chief Barker in Saturday's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster after deciding to give the race a miss with National Stakes winner Toormore. Chief Barker: Represents Team Hannon The pair, who are both owned by Middleham Park Racing, boast unbeaten records with each juvenile winning three times already this season. However, it is thought the likely easy ground on Town Moor will suit Chief Barker, who beat subsequent Fillies' Mile winner Chriselliam last time time out, much more than previous Group One winner Toormore. "Doncaster have had more than 12 millimetres of rain this week, so inevitably the ground will be slow, so we have decided to run Chief Barker and not Toormore, who will now be put away until next year when he will have a Guineas preparation," the trainer told www.richardhannonracing.co.uk. "Toormore is all class but his speed would be blunted by soft ground, whereas Chief Barker, a good horse in his own right, is more the grinder so arguably better suited to the testing conditions." Joining Chief Barker in the line-up are three from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle yard, headed by the supplemented Century. Buonarroti and the maiden Johann Strauss will join him. Johnny Murtagh's Altruistic and Pat Shanahan's Dolce N Karama add further Irish interest. Roger Varian supplemented his Autumn Stakes winner Kingston Hill earlier in the week and he takes his chance. There were two other supplementary entries, the well-fancied Godolphin hope Pinzolo and Sir Michael Stoute's 11-length maiden winner Snow Sky. Aiming to keep the prize in the north are Mark Johnston's Royal Lodge runner-up Somewhat and Kevin Ryan's The Grey Gatsby

Willie Mullins reports Hurricane Fly to be stronger than ever as he prepares the StanJames Champion Hurdle winner for the season ahead. Hurricane Fly: Come back stronger than ever The remarkable nine-year-old enjoyed an unbeaten five-race campaign last term and will follow the same path this season. The trainer told sportinglife.com: "Hurricane Fly has come back in from grass, I think, much stronger than he ever has before which might mean it could take him longer to get fully fit - but I'm hoping that when he is fit, he's going to retain all that strength and be at least as good as he was over the last couple of years. "We hope to follow the same path as we did last year, starting off with the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown and then hopefully on to the Istabraq Festival Hurdle, the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle followed by the Stan James Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham and finally, the Rabobank at Punchestown. It worked well last year so there is no need to change the plan." Hurricane Fly has already amassed an amazing 16 Grade One victories, equalling the world record held by Kauto Star and the American flat superstar, John Henry. "With normal luck and if we can keep him sound, Hurricane Fly should be in a position to set his own all-time Grade One winning world record this season!" said Mullins. Four-time Grade One winner Quevega is another record-equalling member of the Closutton academy who will seek to set her own record at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. Last season she equalled the immortal Golden Miller's record of five straight Festival wins, which he completed in 1936. Quevega looks set to follow the same successful route for a fifth consecutive season, making her seasonal debut in the OLBG David Nicholson Mares Hurdle next March, followed by the Grade One Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Punchestown. "Quevega is back in pre-training and will come in to me around November 1. I think we'll go with the same plan as last year." Last season's Hennessy and Punchestown Gold Cup winner and Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup second, Sir Des Champs also looks set to follow a similar path to the previous campaign. "Sir Des Champs is another horse that has come in great after summer grazing at his owners farm. I imagine we will follow the same plan - we started off in the John Durkan last year. "Whether we do this year or not, I'm not sure but I think I'm very happy to keep with the plan as it worked last season. I haven't really discussed it with the owners yet, but I think I'm happy to do that."

23/10/2013

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
SEDGEFIELD RACECOURSE - Medical Failure
SEDGEFIELD SEPTEMBER MEETING 2013
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on 24 October 2013 held an enquiry to consider whether or not the Managing Executive of Sedgefield Racecourse, had committed breaches of Rule (F)15.2.3 of the Rules of Racing, in the light of BHA General Instruction 11.1, headed “Requirements for the Provision of Racecourse Medical Services”, in that at its medical inspection prior to and during racing on 5 September 2013 the following deficiencies were identified:
• BHAGI 11.1 (para 5(b)) – the equipment and supplies in the Jockeys’ Medical Room (JMR) failed to include all the requisite items listed at Annex A to BHAGI 11.2; and • BHAGI 11.1 (para 8(b)) – the equipment and supplies in the third ambulance failed to include all the requisite items listed at Annex A to BHAGI 11.2
The Panel heard evidence from Mr Charlie Moore, the Clerk of the Course, on behalf of the Executive.
Having considered the evidence, including a written submission on behalf of the Executive, the Panel accepted an admission that it was in breach of Rule (F)15.2.3.
Noting that (i) the equipment deficiencies have been rectified and that all other failings identified at the medical inspection had been addressed prior to its next meeting; and (ii) in the opinion of the Chief Medical Adviser the deficiencies were of a minor nature,
the Panel cautioned the Executive as to its future conduct.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
Positive Sample - THE STRIG, Stuart Williams
BRIGHTON FIRST JULY MEETING 2013
The Hardings First Class Caterers Handicap Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority held an enquiry on 24 October 2013 into the analysis of the urine ordered to be taken from THE STRIG, trained by Stuart Williams, by the Stewards at Brighton after the gelding finished first in the Hardings First Class Caterers Handicap Stakes on 2 July 2013. The sample tested positive for a prohibited substance, in breach of Rule (C)53 of the Rules of Racing. The Panel also considered whether or not to take action under Rule (A)74.2 in respect of the possible disqualification of the gelding.
The urine taken from THE SPRIG was found to contain butorphanol, which is a prohibited substance. The trainer did not exercise his right to have the ‘B’ sample analysed. After considering the evidence, including a submission from Williams and a written statement from his Veterinary Surgeon, the Panel was satisfied that the source of the substance was an injection of Torbugesic (that contains butorphanol) given in conjunction with Domosedan, which was, administered by Williams’ Veterinary Surgeon on 28 June 2013 to calm the gelding before being shod.
The Panel accepted an admission from Williams that he was in breach of Rule (C)53 and imposed a fine of £1,000 upon him. Under Rule (A)74, the Panel disqualified THE SPRIG from the race placing JOHNNY SPLASH (IRE) first, WHERE’S REILEY(USA) second, PUTIN (IRE) third and LITTLE CHINA fourth.
The Panel also informed Williams that all the horses in his care may be the subject of examination and the taking of samples for analysis provided for in Rule (A)49 within the next 12 months.

BEVERLEY FIRST SEPTEMBER MEETING 2013
The Play Roulette And Blackjack At totepool.com EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) held an enquiry on 24 October 2013 to consider whether or not Mark Johnston, a licensed trainer, had committed a breach of Rule (E)18 of the Rules of Racing in respect of the record of vaccinations found in the passport of TESTING (FR), prior to the filly running in the Play Roulette And Blackjack At totepool.com EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at Beverley on 18 September 2013. The matter was referred to the BHA by the Beverley Stewards, this being Johnston’s fifth offence within the previous twelve months.
Having considered the evidence the Panel accepted an admission from Johnston that he was in breach of Rule (E)18 in that, although TESTING (FR) had received the required vaccinations, the last vaccination had not been endorsed into the passport as required by the Rules.
Taking into account that this was Johnston’s fifth offence within the previous twelve months, the Panel imposed a fine of £1,750 upon him.
