Third Intention is on course to return to Cheltenham for The Open next month after opening his account over fences at The Showcase on Friday, October 18. Third Intention: Set to return to Cheltenham The six-year-old made all the running under Joe Tizzard in the Cheltenham Annual Members Novices' Chase, repelling the challenge of odds-on favourite Rebel Fitz for a comfortable length and a quarter victory. Colin Tizzard's charge was a leading novice last term without winning, making the frame in three Grade One contests and chasing home Dynaste in the Grade Two John Smith's Mildmay Novices' Chase. Options for Third Intention at The Open include the Paddy Power Gold Cup (Saturday, November 16) and the Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase (Friday, November 15), both over an extended two and a half miles. Tizzard reported: "Third Intention may have an entry in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. We haven't decided, but novices have run in it before and he isn't a complete novice because he was running over fences last year. There is also the Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase. He will almost certainly go back to Cheltenham, but for which race is still undecided. "He did not have too hard a race on Friday and has come out of that well. Making the running was not a problem and for a two-horse race I thought it was quite a spectacle. "It was cat and mouse between the two jockeys and it was beautiful to watch. Going down to the third last, Joe (Tizzard) asked for a long one and ours came up whereas the other horse didn't. "He had a wind operation over the summer because he got beat a couple of times last year when it appeared his head came up, which meant he was either shirking it or he couldn't get his wind. We had to check it and there was a slight problem, so we had it done, but whether that has made a difference, time will tell. He did put his head down after the last at Cheltenham though, which was lovely to see. "We had him entered in the two mile, two and a half mile, and three-mile novices' chases at Cheltenham and we plumped for the one in between because we aren't entirely sure what his best trip is. I don't think anyone can be because he also ran very well over three miles at Aintree and Kempton last season, and two miles before that." The Dorset handler is also considering The Open for talented chasers Oiseau De Nuit and Golden Chieftain, who was an impressive 10-length winner of the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Tizzard continued: "Oiseau De Nuit will run this weekend at Aintree in the Old Roan Chase and will then go to Cheltenham for The Open, where he could go for the Shloer Chase. It is a three-week gap between the two meetings and that is ideal. "He has come back from his summer break in very good form and my daughter-in-law, who rides him every day, says he is still the best horse she rides here. He ran as well as he ever has in the spring and has a career high mark (158) going into this season. "There is a chance Golden Chieftain will start at The Open as well, but we may give him a racecourse gallop and go to the Hennessy instead. I don't think he can do both and he could have started at Cheltenham last week but I thought the ground would be plenty quick enough for him, so I didn't enter him. "I have never seen him go as fast as he did in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase. He surprised me a bit that day and has gone up to 148, but he is a big lovely, strong horse and he had shown good bits of form before that. Maybe he is just getting it all together now and will be entered in a couple of races, but we have no definite targets at the moment

Lingfield Park, 22 October 2013
2.00, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Danny Brock, the rider of the winner, IMPERTINENT, from three furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Brock for 4 days as follows: Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6, Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November 2013, one of which will be spent at the British Racing School for remedial training.
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, IMPERTINENT, ridden by Danny Brock and trained by Jonathan Portman, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the filly had won a weak contest. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of IMPERTINENT could be reviewed.
2.30, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching six furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, SWEET P, ridden by Martin Dwyer, had interfered with DIVINE BAY, unplaced, ridden by Sam Hitchcott. The Stewards found Dwyer in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had made a maneouvre right when not clear. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2013.
4.30, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why BURNHOPE, trained by Scott Dixon, entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. Having heard his evidence they found him in breach of Rule (B)27.5, and this being the second offence within the previous 12 months they fined him £280.
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why OH SO SASSY, trained by Chris Wall, entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. Having heard the trainer’s representative’s evidence they found the trainer in breach of Rule (B)27.5 and fined him £140.
5.00, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the final bend. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that UNDERSTORY (USA), unplaced, ridden by Luke Morris, had interfered with the winner, LANDAU (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry. They found Morris in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had allowed his mount to drift left towards the rail. They suspended him for 2 days, as follows, Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2013
The Stewards also held an enquiry into possible interference on the run to the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, LANDAU (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry, had interfered with MIGUEL GRAU (USA), placed third, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, which then interfered with SHIRATAKI (IRE), placed second, ridden by Pat Cosgrave. The Stewards found Keniry in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift right. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2013.

Great Yarmouth, 22 October 2013
3.50, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Silvestre De Sousa, the rider of MONSIEUR JAMIE, placed third, had appeared to stop riding for about five strides inside the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they noted his explanation that the gelding jumped right leaving the stalls causing his foot to slip in the stirrup. As the gelding continued to hang right throughout the race he felt he was about to lose his stirrup and in order to maintain his balance had to correct his footing.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the start. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that FRONT PAGE NEWS, unplaced, ridden by Andrea Atzeni, had interfered with LULU THE ZULU (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Andrew Mullen. They found the interference was accidental.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference at about the three furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that COMRADE BOND, placed fourth, had interfered with FRONT PAGE NEWS, unplaced, ridden by Andrea Atzeni. They found the interference was accidental.
4.20, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference over the final one and a half furlongs. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that RED PILGRIM, placed second, ridden by Robert Tart, had interfered with THE DUCKING STOOL, placed third, ridden by Shelley Birkett. They found the interference was accidental and had improved RED PILGRIM’s placing. They placed THE DUCKING STOOL, second and RED PILGRIM third.
5.20, eighth race
The Starter reported that ROYAL CAPER, trained by John Ryan, was unruly in the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards noted that MUCKY MOLLY, unplaced, had interfered with HAMBLE, unplaced, half a furlong out, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
22/10/2013
Kempton Park, 22 October 2013
5.40, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, POSH BOY (IRE), ridden by Jim Crowley and trained by Chris Wall, compared with its previous run at Brighton on 8 October 2013 where the gelding finished twelth of fourteen, beaten by 23 lengths. They noted the trainer could offer no explanation for the gelding’s improved form.
6.40, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Joe Fanning, the rider of LOUD, placed fourth, from 1½ furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Fanning for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2013.
7.10, fourth race
The Stewards noted that SUPER COOKIE, unplaced, had interfered with EMMAN BEE (IRE), unplaced, two furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

22nd October 2013 - THE CORONATION OF CHAMPIONS The third QIPCO British Champions Day might have lacked a Frankel but nonetheless drew fields with strength and depth for its five flagship races and both the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Champion saw very high-class efforts from their victors. Here are our full views.
Olympic Strikes Gold
Those hoping for the definitive answer as to who is the best miler in Europe, and possibly the world, were left continuing to scratch their heads after the result of the QIPCO Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (QEII) on Saturday, writes Dominic Gardiner-Hill.
Genuine contenders in the shape of Dawn Approach (pre-race 125), Olympic Glory (124), Maxios (123) and Soft Falling Rain (122) lined up for the contest, but on rain-softened ground that scuppered the chances of many it was the blinkered first time Olympic Glory that strode to a convincing three-and-a-quarter-length success, with Dawn Approach doing best of the others in fourth, a respectful six lengths behind Richard Hannon’s colt.
It is not a result to have total confidence in the figures but I have promoted Olympic Glory 1lb to a new mark of 125. I had him running to 124 when beaten a short head by French wonder-filly Moonlight Cloud (receiving 3lb, running to 122) in the Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August, and now that filly has been promoted to 123 following her subsequent success in the Foret at the Arc meeting I am quite happy to keep the pair of them in line at 123 and 125 – suggesting that she would once again just get the better of Olympic Glory if they met at the same terms.
Runner-up on Saturday Top Notch Tonto relished the testing conditions and continued his progress through the ranks by posting a career-best 118, whilst third-placed Kingsbarns showed a welcome return to form with a performance of 117.
This level for the race suggests Elusive Kate (fifth) ran very much the same race (110) as she did behind Excelebration in last year’s QEII and stablemate Gregorian (sixth – 107 ) ran to within 1lb of the form he had shown on his previous start when eighth in the Daniel Wildenstein, again at the Arc meeting. That stacks up pretty neatly at the present time as far as I am concerned.
Dawn Approach beat Olympic Glory by three-quarters of a length in last year’s Coventry at Royal Ascot, but has now had the tables reversed the two times they have met as three-year-olds. I believe he ran to 113 on ground that was probably too soft for him on Saturday and I still think he was seen in best light when runner-up to Toronado in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood late in July when running to 125. This suggests that Toronado at 126 for that performance still has the edge over his stablemate and hopefully he will give us a clue as to how reliable that figure is if he contests the Breeders’ Cup Mile in a couple of weeks – another below par performance there and maybe a minor rethink might be needed before I head to Hong Kong in December to help assemble the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2013!
Not by Farhh
Unlike the murky waters of the QEII the QIPCO Champion Stakes saw the front three in the market fight out a pulsating finish, and Farhh produced as good a performance as has been seen in the 1m2f division all season as he narrowly held off race-regular Cirrus des Aigles, writes Graeme Smith.
The Champion wasn’t an entirely satisfactory contest in event, with Farhh much better placed to strike at his pacemaker than Cirrus des Aigles and Ruler of The World when the tempo eventually lifted, but I felt he was holding them off by the finish (having failed to settle for much of the race) and the result proved an excellent fit with pre-race ratings.
Cirrus des Aigles hasn’t been the force of old this season and the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee’s figure of 123 for his Prix Dollar success comes up some 8lb shy of his pinnacle from 2012. A reproduction of that figure fits in neatly with the 124 Farhh was awarded in last year’s World Rankings with the pair separated by a neck, and the knock-on improvement of the Derby winner Ruler of The World (a further half-length behind) from 120 to 122 is perfectly feasible considering he was lightly raced prior to Epsom and hadn’t been seen to best effect in three starts in the interim.
The trio drew some six lengths clear of Farhh’s pacemaker Hunter’s Light. His current form isn’t the easiest to pin down following a luckless passage when seemingly full of running in the Arlington Million, but he came on 113 and this level puts him very close to that at 112.
Historical standards taken from both the two previous runnings of the Champion Stakes at Ascot, and then including the final few Newmarket renewals have this field between 3lb and 6lb below the mean, but that’s probably to be expected with both standards from pre-race ratings and recent performances suggesting that would be the case.
Even at 124 the injury-hit Farhh comes out as the joint-highest 1m2f performer of the season alongside Al Kazeem – although both come out behind The Fugue at 123 when her sex allowance is taken into account – and whilst we’ll never know now it’s been announced he’s off to Dalham Hall I have a sneaking suspicion we might never have seen the very best of him. I suppose Cirrus des Aigles and Ruler of The World could still endorse this form in 2014!
If the Champion was run at a modest pace the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes proved quite the opposite and made for a thorough test of stamina at the 1m4f trip. That probably played a part in the margin the fast-improving Seal of Approval thrashed her seven rivals by, but even a slightly more reserved view of the form than might have been the case has her coming out as a very smart filly.
Assessment through Belle de Crecy’s pre-race rating of 110 is a more modest viewpoint than going through any of those behind the front two, but that approach is also supported by pre-race ratings and recent form standards and still has Seal of Approval improving not only past Talent’s 114 Oaks-winning figure but also the 115 Dalkala had shown when gaining a narrow verdict in the Opera a fortnight earlier. Historical standards from the previous two Ascot runnings of this race (as a Group 2!) do suggest 1lb or so higher, but given doubts as to how well some of Seal of Approval’s rivals saw the race out – Dalkala flattened out notably after being delivered a furlong out – this sits most comfortably with me for what’s a huge standout in Seal of Approval’s repertoire so far.
The other race I assessed on Ascot’s Champions Day card was the Group 3 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup. Four of the first five home were trained in Ireland and a slight discrepancy between mine and the Irish Handicapper’s initial assessment of this race means my figures certainly aren’t set in stone.
Harris Tweed came in for an excellent front-running ride from George Baker (who gained more than ample compensation later in the afternoon on Seal of Approval) only to be ground down on the line by Royal Diamond and my view was that the latter could be credited as improving 2lb on his pre-race figure of 112, which fitted in pretty neatly with the third, fourth, fifth and sixth as well as an interpretation of his Irish St Leger Trial-winning form.
Harris Tweed was rated 115 pre-race, which was his 2012 Rankings figure, but he’d been raised back to that level on what we thought he had in reserve when winning a handicap at Goodwood two starts back and I was quite happy to bring that back to 114 for the time being, and have him level with my assessment of Royal Diamond after the pair had been split by only a nose. As I say though, the Irish Handicapper obviously has a very strong line to this race and we’ll have to see how the World Rankings Committee views it.

Hugo Palmer has had a great season but his horses are not firing at the moment. So let's tip one. Photography has not run well on his last 2 starts but has had his excuses. He was wound up in the stalls on penultimate start over a mile here before actually running ok behind some serious class in the likes of Volume and Gold Trail at Nottingham on ground that had dried up too much. Soft ground should see him more effective today and this is technically easier. It does look a strong nursery though and there are plenty of unexposed dangers but 16/1 is surely overpriced. Had the ground been better then Anglophile would be the selection but soft is something of an unknown and worries me with 2 year olds if they are unraced in these conditions at a shortish price. The fact that Island Remede went well on soft last time suggests he may be best of those at the top of the market but it's still worth sticking with the Palmer gelding. Newmarket 17.20 - Photography 1pt e/w
One of the most exciting Beginners' Chases so far this season takes place at Fontwell today and a case can be made for almost all of the 6 lining up. Black Thunder went off favourite for the Lanzarote Hurdle last term but couldn't quite live up to expectation in the latter half of the season. He has a bit to find with Fox Appeal on a hurdles race a year ago though and I'd lean to the Emma Lavelle runner over him. The trainer is in fine form and her runner looks to be a chaser in the making who has a course and distance hurdles win to his name. However, the one that looks really interesting the champion trainer's Heronry who just gets the vote over the Lavelle runner. He is 2 from 2 at the track and has won 50% of his races. A win on heavy means there is little concern over soft ground and it has to be noted that Barry Geraghty is here just to ride this 5 year old. He has jumped right before and that could be a concern here over fences but I thought he'd be shorter than 5/2. Fontwell 16.00 - Heronry 2pt win

RETIRED Gold Cup winner Denman is recovering from a potentially fatal infection, his owner Paul Barber has revealed.
The 2008 Gold Cup winner has been released from Newmarket Equine Hospital and is making progress, Barber added, but was in a "touch and go" situation while receiving treatment.
Speaking to BBC Somerset, Barber said: "He's not been particularly well and I've had him in Newmarket veterinary centre.
"He got an infection in the bone, that's why he had to go to Newmarket. Once we cured this bone problem, he had a problem with his blood, an infection in the blood.
"He is making headway. I can only hope for everybody who loves Denman he makes it to the other end."
Denman, 13, has been released from hospital and returned to the care of Charlotte Alexander, the rider with whom he was based prior to his hospitalisation.
"I was up to see him the other day and he is making head way. He has a horrible piece of swelling around his fetlock joint which is going down every week, Charlotte tells me now. I can only pray and hope that he will make a full recovery," Barber added.

Ffos Las is to host a charity racing day for the jockey JT McNamara who suffered paralysis after a fall at the Cheltenham Festival. The event takes place during the final weekend racing day of the year at the Carmarthenshire racecourse, on Sunday November 10.
Chairman Dai Walters has put together prizes for an auction which include: A hospitality box for 12 people at Anfield football stadium for Liverpool v Swansea City on Saturday 22 February 2014 A visit to Ballydoyle racing stables in Tipperary - where Aidan O'Brien trains - and a tour of Coolmore Stud with lunch, for four people Fly fishing for two on the River Usk, with the assistance of a gillie, and lunch at the Newbridge on Usk Rally driving day for two people at Walters Arena Motorsport Complex Morning on the gallops and breakfast with champion jump racing trainer Nicky Henderson and overnight stay at The Pheasant near to his Berkshire stables A day's pheasant shooting at Bishopwood, Ross-on-Wye, on 28 January 2014 Four ball and lunch at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club A summer race meeting, with a restaurant table for four and wine, at Royal Windsor Racecourse Porsche Cayman taster experience at Pembery Circuit.
Ffos Las Racecourse's General Manager and Clerk of the Course Tim Long said: "The wonderful spectacle of horse racing that we all love is only possible with the gallant and courageous jockeys on board these magnificent animals.
"It is terrible when an accident occurs - and the safety of both horse and rider is always our number one priority, but there are dangers. The Professional Jockeys Association is absolutely serious when they say that being a jockey is the only profession in which you are followed around by an ambulance.
"The racing and sports communities have rallied round after the accident that befell JT McNamara at the Cheltenham Festival last March.
"I know that our visitors on November 10 will join us in supporting JT McNamara and his family through purchasing a raffle ticket on the day and perhaps bidding in the auction for some of the fantastic prizes."
Bids in the auction can be made at the racecourse on the day - or before by calling Ffos Las on 01554 811092.

FAIRBET.
PUNTERS have been left counting their losses after a betting shop in Hertfordshire closed owing thousands of pounds in unpaid winnings.
================ Fair Bet on course bookmakers.
Dear Punters
I have recently been contacted by several people who I believe are owed money by a betting shop in Herts.
I would therfore like to let all our customers know that Fair-Bet Bookmakers on-course.... have never been in anyway associated with the Fairbet Bookmakers of Herts who have recently closed the doors of their off -course bookmaking business.

Richard Hannon has elected to saddle QEII winner Olympic Glory rather than Toronado in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita next week. Olympic Glory: Will represent Hannon team in the Breeders' Cup Mile The Everleigh trainer was spoilt for choice in the American showpiece with his Group One pair, although Toronado had looked the more likely to travel. However, assistant trainer Richard Hannon junior told the stable's website: "Toronado worked at Lingfield on Tuesday morning, but, having had a break since the wind operation that he had after York, he clearly needs a bit more time, so we will put him away for next season, when the Breeders' Cup will be his ultimate target. "It was always going to be one or the other, but Olympic Glory has come out of last week's QEII victory at Ascot better than we could have hoped, so he will be our representative in the Mile. Sheikh Joaan (Al Thani) is keen to have runners at the meeting, and we will also be talking his Shamshon for the Juvenile Turf."

At Fishers Cross is set to make his eagerly-anticipated seasonal debut in the bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby on Saturday week. At Fisher's Cross: Going well and heading to Wetherby next weekend The JP McManus-owned six-year-old enjoyed a fantastic campaign last time around, winning each of his six starts and claiming the major staying novice hurdle prizes at both the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals in the spring. He currently disputes favouritism for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March with four-times winner Big Buck's, who missed much of last season through injury. With Paul Nicholls' charge unlikely to be out until the new year at the earliest, At Fishers Cross can lay down an early marker in West Yorkshire, although he is likely to meet last year's winner Tidal Bay, who is on the comeback trail after missing Cheltenham. Trainer Rebecca Curtis said: "He's going really well and I think he's going to go to Wetherby on Saturday week. "There are not too many options for him really. There is the race at the Hennessy meeting at Newbury (Long Distance Hurdle) and then the Long Walk at Ascot in December. "He had a good summer at JP's place in Ireland and is coming along well. He seems as good as ever, so we're looking forward to getting started with him."
