15:35 Friday 25th October Racing Tips - 25/10/2013
Really good Fakenham card tomorrow and let's hope the ground doesn't get too sodden by the forecast rain. The feature handicap of the day sees The Rainbow Hunter line up off only 1lb higher than for his first time out win last year at Ascot. Nick Scholfield is back on again and, as long as the ground remains intact, he looks overpriced at 8/1. This is a decent handicap for its class but the form of his Ascot win worked out so well and it's a great deal easier than the subsequent races he contested last term, Grand National included. It will be interesting to see how he handles Fakenham's undulations but I think the sharpness of the track may suit over this extended 3 miles and the yard has made a decent start to the season. Dover's Hill is also of interest back off the same mark as when winning at Sandown in March but he does want good ground and that appears unlikely. Rank outsider That's The Deal is 5lb out of the weights and up against it but he has never finished out of the places here and it's quite possible he will do the same today at a massive price. Fakenham 15.25 - The Rainbow Hunter 1pt e/w
The first 4 races at Newbury are 2 year old contests and the second of them looks like it could be fairly classy. Richard Hannon has won 3 of the last 4 runnings of the race (both divisions last term) and sends out 2 with a serious chance. Potentate (N/R) has been 2nd on both all weather starts but had excuses each time and 6 furlongs looks about right for now. The concern on breeding is the soft ground though and preference of the 2 would be for G Force. By Tamayuz, who acted on ground with cut in it, he cost 70,000gns and is a half brother to plenty of winners. Hannon is having a good season and shows a level stakes profit when teaming up with Jamie Spencer over the last few years, though the 2 are looking for their first winner together this term. The danger is Dark Leopard at 13/8 for the team that won a division of this 2 years ago. The big factor in his favour is a 2nd on soft ground on debut here over half a furlong shorter. It wasn't the greatest time but he did run into a decent sort in Cape Wrath who went on to contest a far better race last month at Newmarket. He is the pick on form but there could be something lurking who has lofty prospects. Newbury 14.00 - Dark Leopard 2pt win
I like both the Gosden runners for the fillies handicap and it has to be noted that Buick preferrers the handicap debutant Martagon Lilly. Trapeze appears to like cut in the ground but this could be strongly run and I'm not sure she'll see it out. Buick's mount went well on heavy last time and that form has worked out pretty well. She did finish tired though and that has to be a concern in similar conditions over the same trip this afternoon. Bohemian Dance could be very well treated on the basis of an easy win last time and she will appreciate a strongly run race. The concern for her is soft ground given she has looked most at ease on firmer but she would get the vote of those at the top of the market. The one that could be worth siding with is Raskova for William Jarvis who won over course and distance on handicap debut off 3lb lower. That was on good ground following a solid run in a maiden where the form has worked out very well indeed. She handled soft last time at Windsor and ran on without quite matching the winner for pace. At 11/1 she looks a solid option given what we know about her as opposed to what we don't know about those shorter in the market. Newbury 15.35 - Raskova 1pt e/w

A HEFTY off-course gamble on long-time absentee Bert Trick to 5-1 from morning odds of 33-1 at Wolverhampton on Thursday evening was not given an opportunity to be played out after the stewards invited trainer Frank Sheridan to withdraw the horse 40 minutes before the race.
Sheridan, who trains on the racecourse at Wolverhampton, duly took the advice after being told the four-year-old is the subject of a BHA investigation.
The horse had been due to have his first run for Sheridan in the 7f handicap having previously raced for Liam McAteer, who trains at Navan in Ireland. Bert Trick was aiming to overcome an absence of 796 days.
Wolverhampton's stewards were alerted by BHA headquarters in London that Bert Trick, who had raced three times in Ireland and was sent off at odds of 66-1, 20-1 and 66-1 respectively, was under investigation and should not be permitted to run.
Simon Cowley, stipendiary steward on duty at Wolverhampton, said: "Before the race, we interviewed Mr Sheridan and explained to him that that his horse was the subject of a BHA investigation. We invited him to withdraw the horse, which he did."
As the withdrawal was made 40 minutes before the race, no on-course market had been formed.
The race was won by 10-1 shot Prigsnov Dancer.

Roger Varian is hoping Kingston Hill will vindicate the decision to supplement him for Saturday's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. Kingston Hill: Supplemented for Racing Post Trophy Kingston Hill is unbeaten in two starts and the Newmarket trainer is hoping the Mastercraftsman colt can step up to the mark. "Kingston Hill has done nothing wrong and has won both his starts. I have been very happy with his condition since he won the Autumn Stakes two weeks ago," the Newmarket trainer told www.varianstable.com. "The trip and ground should be fine and, although this is another step up, I am confident that he will be there or thereabouts." Doncaster has been a particularly lucky place for Varian. His first winner came at the track in March 2011 after he took over the reins at Kremlin House stables when the late Michael Jarvis retired. Jarvis sent out the winner of this race in 1980 when Beldale Flutter defeated none other than Shergar. "We thought about it pretty seriously (supplementing), it wasn't a light decision," Varian told At The Races. "We've been extremely pleased with him since he won the Autumn Stakes and it certainly looks like he could take another run. "He's come out of the race well, there's a chance he could improve and he's shown that he can handle cut in the ground. "It's a very good race but we think he's got the profile that made us think about it and on reflection we felt we better put him in the race. "Hopefully it won't be gluey ground, if it's wet they'll go straight through it." Aidan O'Brien has three runners - Buonarroti, Century and Johann Strauss - as he goes for an eighth triumph in the final Group One race of the season in Britain. Century would appear to be his number one hope after being supplemented following a debut success at the Curragh just two weeks ago. "We're very happy with Century. Obviously he's had just the one run but ran a nice race and won nicely. He was a bit green, slowly away, but he came through the field and learned plenty," said the Ballydoyle trainer. "He finished really well. Joseph just gave him a chance after being slowly away but he found his way through them. "We gave him time and there were others to get out before him. He was always doing his half-speeds nicely all through the summer. "He was always a definite possible for this if his maiden went well, we always had one eye on it from a while back. "Buonarotti had a nice run first time in Galway, finished fourth, and then he improved a good bit to win his maiden at Tipperary and the horse that was second to him won on Wednesday. "Johann Strauss is a horse we always thought a lot of. He was very babyish in his first race at Newmarket where he ran a nice race and was then just beaten at Naas but he came forward. He's a horse we've always felt was very smart. "The mile should suit him. He was very babyish at Newmarket and obviously he learned before Naas and he should progress again, hopefully. "To win it you need a horse that can travel, that can stay and can quicken." The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Snow Sky was supplemented on the strength of an 11-length romp at Salisbury on heavy ground earlier this month. His jockey James Doyle believes the son of Nayef has all the staying attributes that will be needed in the conditions. "He won well at Salisbury, it was desperate ground but he won well so he handles those conditions and seems to have come out of the race very well so he's definitely one to look forward to," Doyle told Racing UK. "He's got a good staying pedigree and I think that is key on that type of ground, if you can handle the ground that counts for a lot." The Charlie Appleby-trained Pinzolo was another of the four horses added at the confirmation stage at a cost of £17,500. The Monsun colt battled on bravely to beat Red Galileo a head over a mile at Newbury after wininng on his debut at Newmarket. "Thankfully the form of his maiden was franked by another of our horses this week and he's physically done very well since his last run," said Appleby. "We couldn't be happier, the ground should suit and all in all we are hoping for a nice run." Champion trainer-elect Richard Hannon relies on Chief Barker to give him a first win in the Racing Post Trophy after deciding not to risk National Stakes scorer Toormore on the expected testing ground. Chief Barker has won all his three races so far and took the scalp of subsequent Shadwell Fillies' Mile winner Chriselliam at Haydock last time. "Chief Barker is rated 103, so he won't have to improve much to be a player here, and soft ground is definitely a bonus for him," the Everleigh trainer told www.richardhannonracing.co.uk. "He is three from three and his victory over Chriselliam last time looks pretty smart after the filly went and won the big Group One and if it turns into a slog, which it will probably will, our fellow will be right there at the end." Johnny Murtagh has made a tremendous success this season of training as well as riding and has both jobs with Altruistic for owner Andrew Tinkler. Murtagh has won this prestigious race twice, riding Dilshaan in 2000 and St Nicholas Abbey in 2009, and believes his representative will not let the team down. "It looks a good renewal and there are lots of unbeaten horses in it, so it's going to be tough, but I'm happy with Altruistic," said the County Kildare-based handler. "He was only having his second run last time and the form has worked out well with the second winning again. "I'm looking forward to seeing him run. He's by Galileo, he's very tough and genuine and I think he'll get the mile well. "I don't know how he'll handle the ground, but I think he'll go on it as well as any

Saeed bin Suroor is expecting another big run from Prince Bishop in the Worthington's Champion Shield & Victoria Club Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. Saeed Bin Suroor: Hoping for a big run from Prince Bishop The six-year-old showed the benefit of a long break after finishing down the field behind St Nicholas Abbey in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March by winning the September Stakes at Kempton last month. Bin Suroor reports the Godolphin-owned gelding to have come on for that outing ahead of this Group Three contest, registered as the St Simon Stakes. "This horse is improving all the time as he comes to the end of the season. Physically he has improved a lot and in his last piece of work, he worked well," he said. "I think the trip will suit him and he won't mind the ground. He's in good form and we expect a good result from him. "He had a break after Dubai and he's done well since his last race." Trainer Hughie Morrison revealed that Quiz Mistress suffered a setback after winning a Listed race at Chantilly six weeks ago. "She had to have a couple of weeks off after her last run, so I'm not going there as bullish as I might have done," said the East Ilsley trainer. "She's a lovely mare. She won extremely well last time. She just knocked herself which meant she had to have a couple of weeks off and we've been chasing our tail since and I'm worried the ground may be too deep for her. "She went over the top this time last year when she disappointed us when we took her back to France. Ralph Beckett reports Cubanita to be in good shape and reckons she ticks the right boxes. "I think the ground will suit her as will the track and trip," said the Kimpton handler. "She's in good shape so I'm looking for a good run." Sugar Boy has been disappointing since his move from Ireland but his victory in the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown in April would give him a big chance. Connections of the Marco Botti-trained three-year-old retain faith in the colt and believe Sugar Boy has several things in his favour. "He'll love the ground. He's stepping up to a mile and a half and I rode him over a mile and a quarter in a Listed race at Goodwood and the step up in trip will be a plus," his big-race pilot Martin Harley told At The Races. "He's been in good form at home and hopefully he can come back to his best. If he can he'll have a live chance."

Richard Johnson is confident Wishfull Thinking is ready to run up to his best as he looks to defy top-weight in Saturday's Betfred Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree. Wishfull Thinking: Aims to defy top-weight on Saturday A winner over the course and distance during his brilliant novice campaign a couple of years ago, it has not been plain sailing for the 10-year-old since. Philip Hobbs' charge has so far failed to make it at the very highest level, but did enjoy a decent campaign last time around. After filling the runner-up spot in the Old Roan 12 months ago, Wishfull Thinking claimed the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham and the Game Spirit at Newbury before finishing a distant third behind the brilliant Sprinter Sacre in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. He makes his first appearance since the spring on his return to Merseyside this weekend and Johnson reports his mount to be in excellent shape. Johnson said: "He seems in very good form at home. Philip couldn't be happier with him. "It's not easy carrying top-weight in any race and particularly in a competitive race like this, but at the same time he seems really well and we know he's capable of running up to his mark. "He loves Aintree. He ran well in this race last year and has run well at the Grand National meeting a couple of times. Two and a half miles around there is perfect for him. "Everything is in his favour. It's just a question of whether there's any improving horses in there that are better handicapped than him." Next in the weights is Colin Tizzard-trained veteran Oiseau De Nuit. The 11-year-old won at the Grand National meeting in April and his trainer does not expect the two and a half miles he encounters on Saturday to be a problem. Tizzard said: "He won first time out last year and I think on a track like this he should stay the two and a half miles all right. He wasn't stopping when he won at Aintree in the spring over two miles - he ran right to the line. "He's on an all-time high mark now and he's an 11-year-old, but he's in good form and I think he deserves to take his chance. "He's run well every time he's been to Aintree and I'm sure he'll run his race, but it is awfully competitive. He'll have to run up to his best to get involved." Trainer Steve Gollings has snapped up the services of Tony McCoy to ride Conquisto, but does have concerns about the likely testing conditions. Gollings said: "He's in great form. In previous seasons we've always had one or two maintenance issues but, touching wood, everything has gone very smoothly since he came back in. "He has the most wonderful character and I've said to his owner, if I could afford to train him for nothing I would. "He gets up in a morning and all he wants to do is do his work and please you. He always gives 100% and he's a handicappers dream as you can set your watch by him. If he was a hand bigger he'd be a world beater. "The only reservation I have about this weekend is the ground. In an ideal world, over two and a half miles we'd prefer decent ground, but where else do you go with him? There aren't too many options. "Other than the ground, there aren't any other reservations as what you see is what you get. He wears his heart on his sleeve." Saint Are is running over a distance nearly two miles shorter than when he finished ninth in the Grand National in April, but trainer Tim Vaughan sees this race as an ideal starting point for the season. Vaughan said: "He loves it around Aintree and obviously ran a blinder in the National. He's been a superstar of a horse for us. "The trip is going to be on the short side for him on Saturday and it's a competitive race, but it's a nice place to get him going again as we know he likes the track so much. "He's a stronger horse this season and we'll see how we go, but it would be nice to think he could be back at Aintree in the spring for another go at the National. "He is only a seven-year-old." Alan King's admirable grey Walkon filled the runner-up spot three times last season, including when second over the National fences in the Topham Chase. "Walkon, who ran a blinder when second in the Topham Trophy last April, heads back up to Aintree for his first run back in the Old Roan Chase, this time over the Mildmay fences," the trainer told his website www.alankingracing.co.uk. "He did not win last winter but he finished his season in style and if all goes well, he could be aimed at the National this time around." An 11-runner field is completed by Edgardo Sol, Carrickboy, Astracad, Viva Colonia, Pure Faith and Mr Moonshine.

3.10, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Andrew Mullen, the rider of the winner, MORACHE MUSIC, in the final two furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Mullen for 4 days as follows: Friday 8, Saturday 9, Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 November 2013.
3.45, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Michael J M Murphy, the rider of MISTER IMPATIENCE, placed third, in the final two and a half furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Murphy for 11 days as follows: Friday 8, Saturday 9, Monday 11, Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13, Thursday 14, Friday 15, Saturday 16, Monday 18, Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November 2013.
4.50, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mr H A A Bannister, the rider of NARCISSIST (IRE), unplaced, inside the final three furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip when out of contention. The Stewards suspended Mr Bannister for 5 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Auhtority.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of EENY MAC (IRE), ridden by Miss C Walton and trained by Neville Bycroft, which was slowly away and ridden tenderly throughout the race to finish seventh, beaten 17 ¾ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that her instructions were to drop the gelding in in order to get him settled, as he had been keen on his previous run, and to do her best. She added that EENY MAC (IRE) was slowly away and had been unable to keep up with the pace early in the race, becoming detached and then staying on one-paced in the home straight. The trainer’s representative confirmed these instructions and stated that he was happy with the ride given. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
5.20, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Alexandra Vilmar, the rider of FAZZA, unplaced, from approaching the final two furlongs. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she had used her whip above the permitted level. They noted the trainer’s representative’s explanation that SCRUTINY was better suited by running on turf, having resented the kickback at Kempton Park, and has also improved from his first run.. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
5.10, eighth race
