Haydock Park, 18 October 2013
2.55, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Ryan Moore, the rider of BACK LANE, unplaced, from approximately two furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they accepted his explanation and found him not in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2.
5.40, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approximately three and a half furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that ZENAFIRE, unplaced, ridden by Jack Duern, had interfered with MAN OF PLENTY, unplaced, ridden by Ryan Moore. The Stewards found Duern in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred to his right causing interference. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Friday 1 November 2013.
18/10/2013
Cheltenham, 18 October 2013
3.50, fourth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TWIRLING MAGNET (IRE), ridden by A P McCoy and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, compared with the gelding’s previous run at Market Rasen on 28 September 2013, where it finished fourteenth of sixteen, beaten 82 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that TWIRLING MAGNET (IRE) was better suited by the step-up in trip and by Cheltenham’s left-handed track.
5.30, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jeremiah McGrath, the rider of the winner, FIRST IN THE QUEUE (IRE), after the last hurdle. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip on a horse that was clearly winning. The Stewards suspended McGrath for 2 days as follows: Friday 1 and Saturday 2 November 2013.
18/10/2013
Redcar, 18 October 2013
2.30, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of SLINGSBY, ridden by Anna Hesketh and trained by Michael Easterby, which was slowly away and tenderly ridden in the first two furlongs to finish tenth, beaten some 21¾ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that her instructions were to get SLINGSBY to start well because the gelding had been running over seven furlongs, to get a good position and ride the race from there. She added that she was unable to get a good start and the gelding had been outpaced throughout the race. The trainer’s representative confirmed these instructions and added that the race may have come too soon after its run at York six days previously. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.
5.20, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Miss Hayley Moore, the rider of TOP DIKTAT, placed second, from approaching the final one and a half furlongs. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she used her whip above the permitted level. They suspended Moore for 4 days, on dates which will be notified to her by the British Horseracing Authority.

Wolverhampton, 18 October 2013
5.25, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Jack Garritty, the rider of MAJOR MUSCARI (IRE), had been slow to remove the blindfold resulting in his horse being slow to start. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start they accepted his explanation that his horse was loaded late into the barrier stalls and on account of the horse having shaken its blindfold off at its most recent run, the blindfold on this occasion was tucked in tight underneath the cheek pieces and proved difficult to remove, taking several attempts before being successful.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jack Garritty, the rider of MAJOR MUSCARI (IRE), unplaced, in the straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip when out of contention. The Stewards suspended Garritty for 5 days as follows: Friday 1, Saturday 2, Monday 4, Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2013.
6.25, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that KODAFINE (IRE), trained by David Evans, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s representative’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test. This being the second occasion within the previous 12 months that KODAFINE (IRE) had been reported, the Stewards informed the trainer’s representative that if the filly were reported for a third time within the same period, KODAFINE (IRE) would be prevented from having a stalls test for 6 months.
7.30, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference at the three furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that DANCE TO DESTINY, unplaced, ridden by Dougie Costello, had interfered with SAINT BONIFACE, unplaced, ridden by Steve Drowne, who in turn interfered with MARVELOUS JAMES (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Martin Harley, who in turn interfered with CHEERS BIG EARS (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Daniel Muscutt. They found the interference was accidental.
8.00, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Liam Jones, the rider of SHEACHEVAL (IRE), unplaced, from approaching the furlong marker. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip without giving his horse time to respond. The Stewards suspended Jones for 3 days as follows: Saturday 2, Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November 2013.
8.30, seventh race
The Stewards noted that TRUE PRINCE (USA), placed fourth, had interfered with PICCOLO EXPRESS, unplaced, who in turn interfered with CHESTER DEELYTE (IRE), unplaced, who in turn interfered with LAUDATION, unplaced, who in turn interfered with NO WIN NO FEE, placed third, shortly after the start, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

Disciplinary Panel Enquiries
Appeal - ASHDOWN LAD - Alain Cawley
HUNTINGDON FIRST OCTOBER MEETING 2013
The Thomas Morris (Sales & Lettings) Novices' Hurdle Race
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 17 October 2013 considered an appeal lodged by Alain Cawley, the rider of ASHDOWN LAD, unplaced, against the decision of the Huntingdon Stewards on 6 October 2013 to find him in breach of Rule (B)59.4 of the Rules of Racing and to suspend him for 10 days, in that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure the gelding ran on its merits.
The Panel considered evidence from Cawley, who was legally represented. It also viewed recordings of the race.
The Panel found that ASHDOWN LAD, ridden by Cawley, ran prominently and in spite of taking a keen hold early on then settled down the back straight. Cawley was satisfied to track the favourite, AZURE FLY (IRE), as per his instructions. Having jumped the third last in touch with the leaders, Cawley asked the gelding for an effort to maintain his position. Round the final bend ASHDOWN LAD appeared to be short of room on the inside, which caused him to lose some ground. However, once he had the opportunity of a clear run to the second last, Cawley did not make any timely, real or substantial effort.
The Panel considered that from the home turn to the last hurdle Cawley had not carried out his responsibilities to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race and was therefore in breach of Rule (B)59.4.
The Panel upheld the appeal in part and reduced his suspension to 7 days from Sunday 20 to Saturday 26 October 2013 (inclusive).

14:20 Saturday 19th October Racing Tips - 19/10/2013
I think and hope Estimate will win the Long Distance opener at Ascot today but, at 2/1, it's a sit back and enjoy race for me. Maarek will be very hard to beat in the Sprint in search of a Pattern company hat trick but he is opposable at 11/4. Favourites have a poor record in this, as do previous winners, and I think he's ultimately a better horse over 5 furlongs. Winners tend to be aged between 3 and 5 and Jack Dexter is surely capable of a win in this company. A stronger renewal than last year, there aren't many that like to go forward and racing prominently should suit. Though there is little emphasis on the draw, the main players are up high and I think that's where the winner will come form. If there was more pace then Heaven's Guest would be of interest but at this stage Jim Goldie's soft ground loving 4 year old looks the main play at 6/1. Ascot 14.20 - Jack Dexter 1pt e/w
It says something about the QEII that the biggest priced recent winner of the race was a massive 5/1! It again looks as though the winner will come form the top 3 in the betting and Dawn Approach is a worthy favourite. However, he has his quirks and I'm not entirely convinced he will see out a strongly run race on softish ground. There are some lively pace setters here, as well as the likes of Gordon Lord Byron and Caspar Netscher, used to running over shorter, and the favourite still looks short. Olympic Glory is double the price of the Guineas winner (5/1) and may not have seen the very best of him. He was well off the pace last time at Longchamp before finishing strongly behind Maxios (who has lively claims today but I fancy should be bigger in the market than the Hannon horse) and will appreciate a good gallop on this ground. He may not be of the class of the favourite in all honesty and the Godolphin colt could take this by some distance but that run behind Moonlight Cloud on penultimate start gives Richard Hughes' mount a real chance and the Al Thani dominance can continue this afternoon. Ascot 15.30 - Olympic Glory 1pt win
The Future Stars Apprentice Handicap is as intriguing as ever and a case can be made for at least 20 of them. Fury is back to a dangerous mark and back over a trip that may suit but the first one to side with is the consistent Breton Rock who has ideal ground and the yard is in top form at the moment. Lewis Walsh has not had many chances this year but has taken them when they've come and rode a winner on his last start 10 days ago. His mount will be competitive over an extra furlong than he had last time here and gets his ground. He may well be favourite at 11/1 but we have not seen the best of this lightly campaigned 3 year old and he is well drawn with plenty of pace close on his outside. The other worth some support is Trail Blaze at 20/1 for a yard that often fires at Ascot. Kevin Stott is a very capable rider and he gets on well with this 4 year old. Trail Blaze was a staying on second behind Galician over course eand distance in July and returns here off 3lb higher. Next time here saw him finish best of those towards the stands' side and he is now 2lb lower. The ground may actually be an advantage given some early wins on easy going and blinkers are back on, which eked out so much improvement for the latter half of the season. Ascot 16.45 - Breton Rock 1pt e/w Ascot 16.45 - Trail Blaze 1pt e/w
Over at Cheltenham there are some ultra competitive handicaps and Gary Moore sends out a couple of lively contenders in the shape of Vino Griego and Well Refreshed. I'd love to see Kumbeshwar win back in handicap company but I'm not sure he will, for all a step up in trip may be to his advantage. The handicap runner worth siding with looks to be debutant in the sphere Silver Eagle at 6/1. I confess to not having been through the other runners but am quite sweet on this 5 year old who looks well treated off a mark of 130. He scored over 3 miles last time but a strongly run 2 miles 5 should be to his liking and and he has every chance of progressing up the handicap ranks. Letsby Avenue, who Kim Bailey's horse beat back in May, went on to win off a mark of 129 and that makes Silver Eagle a strong fancy off his current mark. Cheltenham 16.25 - Silver Eagle 1pt e/w
I'm relatively useless at the start of new seasons so all jumps tips are best ignored for a month. However, it'll be a surprise of Sametegal doesn't win the extended 2 mile hurdle at 9/4. He ran creditably throughout last season but ended it with only 2 wins to his name, the latter in a not dissimilar contest to this. He ran a super race in the Triumph before looking a little outpaced on good ground in the Scottish Champion and he shuld be more than capable of taking this with some cut in the ground now out of Pattern company. Main threat will be Handazan who is in search of a double having won well at Chepstow last time in handicap company. He ran in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot and has the potential to be a useful hurdler but there should be more between the top 2 in the betting and the favourite is worth siding with. Cheltenham 15.10 - Sametegal 3pt win

NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
Andrew Balding's runners normally come on for their first run, so hopefully SECRET HINT will build on her promising first run at Kempton last Thursday evening. Owned and bred by George Strawbridge, Secret Hint is a two-year-old filly out of a Daylami mare who is a half-sister to several Group winners, mostly at distances between 1m and 1m 4f. As such, Secret Hint's performance in the 6f maiden wasn't that surprising, having been out- paced at the two-furlong marker before staying on to finish third of the 12 runners. The winner cost 190,000gns as a yearling and had disap- pointed on heavy ground when favourite on his second start last time, while the John Gosden- trained runner-up and favourite, MUCH PROMISE , was only narrowly denied. Much Promise had finished second on her sea- sonal debut over 6f at Lingfield, but may not have handled the track when a slightly disap- pointing ninth when favourite for a hot maiden at Glorious Goodwood, the form of which has worked out very well. Back on the more conven- tional contours of Kempton, she took it up inside the last, only to be headed in the last 100 yards, and was beaten a head by the winner. By Invin- cible Spirit and out of a mare by the former Arc winner Peintre Celebre, Much Promise is also a half-sister to this season's Arc winner. On this lat- est evidence, she looks up to winning over 6 or 7f in the short term, but is surely one who will show more over further in time, like Secret Hint. Emma Lavelle's team have been in fine form of late, and STAIGUE FORT added to the Andover trainer's burgeoning seasonal tally when the win- ner of the opening race at Exeter last week, a 2m 3f handicap hurdle. The five-year-old gelding had shown a degree of promise in bumpers and novices hurdles last season at a time when the stable was having a quiet time, but he began to show more from the late summer onwards when he was also upped in trip to 2m 4f and more. A win over 2m 6f in a handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot at the beginning of September spelled a 6lb rise in the handicap for Staigue Fort. While he was a little disappointing at Stratford the time after that, he won nicely on this latest outing, at Exeter, running on well at the close. He looks ca- pable of getting 3m in time, but may be best served for now by running over 2m 4f or there- abouts. As one heading the right way, he should defy another rise in the handicap. Staigue Fort's stablemate COURT BY SURPRISE looked in need of the run when a tiring but en- couraging third in a decent 3m handicap chase at Chepstow's Saturday meeting. Court By Sur- prise's campaign tailed off last season, having looked potentially useful when progressing in the autumn and winning a valuable handicap chase at Doncaster before Christmas. After pulling up in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster three months later, he was then beaten a long way in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham, which was his final run before his latest outing at Chepstow. As Court By Surprise ran at Chepstow off a hand- icap rating only 3lb higher than when he won at Doncaster, he may have a chance in Class 2 or 3 handicap chases over 3m this season, with the expectation that he will come on for this run.

STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
We were pleased to return to winning form last week with Roger Varian's Mushir obliging at 11/2 at York, where James Fanshawe's Hallelujah also finished third at 7/1. Hopefully, the trends for this Saturday's televised races will lead us to some more nice-priced results. The focus of Channel 4's coverage is Ascot's Cham- pions Meeting (1.45, 2.20, 2.55, 3.30 and 4.05), a meeting where the rides of this season's jockeys' title rivals Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes will come under scrutiny, as they are one-two by wins at the course in the past five seasons. Hughes's current form entitles his rides to more than a sec- ond glance, as he won more races than any other Flat jockey in the UK in the week to Monday, 14 Oc- tober. Hughes's 8 wins just puts him clear of Dane O'Neill (7 wins) and Ryan Moore (6 wins.) By strike rate, Samantha Bell (44%) leads the way from Seb Sanders (33%) and O'Neill (32%.) The UK form trainers by wins are Richards Fahey and Hannon, who both saddled 6 winners, a total equalled by Aidan O'Brien in Ireland, who is of in- terest as he is battling Hannon for the UK train- ers' title, and will probably have several runners at Ascot. O'Brien's 25% strike rate gives him the edge over Hannon and Fahey, but he is put in the shade by the 42% of Marco Botti and 40% of Amanda Perrett. Interestingly, Hannon tops the trainers' table at Ascot (of those trainers with entrants at this meeting) over the past five seasons, his 31 wins putting him 9 clear of next-best John Gosden. Of those trainers with 4+ winners at Ascot in this pe- riod, Hannon's 9% strike rate is bettered by the 15% of Aidan O'Brien, which is equalled by James Fanshawe, but both are some way behind the 29% of Dermot Weld. The principal race of the afternoon is the Group 1 Champion Stakes (4.05), over 1m 2f. The ex- pected good-soft ground should be no hindrance to French star Cirrus Des Aigles, the only entrant with previous course and distance winning form, and has been returning to form in his recent starts. Others of interest are Willie Haggas's Mukhadram (2 from 3 on the ground, and 2 from 5 over distance) and, of the strong representation from Ireland, Aidan O'Brien's Magician (also en- tered in the QEII), who has not been seen since meeting problems in running in the St James's Palace Stakes, which tempers confidence, but his earlier Group 3 win on this ground over 10f makes him interesting and he could go well at a price. The Group 1 QEII Stakes (3.30) brings together some of the season's best milers aged three years and upwards. If Richard Hannon's Toronado can be excused his lacklustre run in the Juddmonte In- ternational last time at York on account of not stay- ing 10f, the drop back to 1m today should see him go close according to his Sussex Stakes win the time before, on good-soft. Another who is of inter- est and may offer some each-way value is French trainer Jonathan Pease's Maxios, who already has winning form at this level and on the ground, and is unbeaten in three starts over 1m. The Group 3 Long Distance Cup at 1.45 is very much a test of stamina. There are a number with winning form over this distance, including the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Estimate, who won a race at this level over course and distance in May, be- fore returning here for the Royal meeting a month later to land the Ascot Gold Cup over 2m 4f. She is unbeaten on the ground, over distance and on the forecast going. The yard has won this previ- ously in the past decade and a glance at the mar- kets could also prove helpful as five favourites have landed this race in the same period. Another to consider with winning form on the ground, over distance and at this course is Saeed Bin Suroor's Azeemah, who won the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York on his penultimate start.

Race Ratings 2.55 Ascot - Saturday, 19 October Qipco British Champions Fillies ́ And Mares ́ Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) (3yo+) 1m 4f
The following horses were entered for this race but many may not run. The runner with the highest rating will be the selection of our team.
211241 Belle De Crecy 35 4 9-3 J P Murtagh Murtagh has been in good form as both a trainer and jockey this season, riding this filly to victory last time in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes at The Cur- ragh, at the expense of Hot Snap. Although she has- n't run over this distance previously, she was staying on well at the end of her last run. Could be more to come and has a lively each-way chance if handling the anticipated good-soft ground. RATING 97 41931 Dalkala 13 4 9-3 A De Royer-Dupre Won the Group 1 Prix l'Opera last time at the Arc meeting, and that form entitles her to go well. While she has winning form on good-soft, and also over distance, her stamina may be stretched over 1m 4f if the conditions become more testing. Still re- spected, though. RATING 98 1-4753 Galvaun 14 4 9-3 A Fabre Beaten six lengths by subsequent Arc winner Treve when fifth in the Prix Vermeille two starts ago, on first run at this level. Dropped back to Group 2 com- pany last time, running to a similar level to finish a close third over 1m 5f. Best form on heavy, so any more rain would be a bonus, but probably still needs to improve a bit to trouble the likely main- players. RATING 95 6582 Igugu 22 6 9-3 M F De Kock Has winning form at this level over 8 and 9f, on soft ground, in South Africa. Best form came this sea- son when fifth, beaten less than three lengths, in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free in Meydan (9f.) Kept on well last time when second on comeback run in a 1m Listed race at Newmarket for fillies and mares. Dubai form gives her a chance in this com- pany, but looks more of a place candidate than one for outright honours. RATING 96 4-1213 Nymphea 41 4 9-3 P Schiergen Rising German star whose finest hour to date came when winning the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Berlin two starts ago, over distance. Has winning form at Listed level on good-soft, so deserves a chance in this company, even if she has to improve a bit with the best of these. RATING 99 21-11F Seal Of Approval 37 4 9-3 James Fanshawe Progressive profile, including successive maiden, handicap and Listed victories, brought to an abrupt halt when she fell in the middle of a pack in the Group 2 fillies and mares' race at Doncaster's St Leger meeting last time. Stable knows time of day in these races and could be one for each-way back- ers. RATING 96 1-1932 Hot Snap 35 3 8-10 Lady Cecil Was a good third when inconvenienced in a messily- run renewal of the Group 1 Nassau Stakes two starts ago, following that with a solid second behind Belle De Crecy in the Blandford Stakes at The Curragh. On that occasion, she was giving the winner 7lb and no obvious reason why she should turn tables here. Un- tried on ground softer than good. RATING 95 111 Pomology 69 3 8-10 John Gosden Improved sharply with each run, winning a Group 3 fillies' race over 1m 5f at Deauville last time. Unex- posed, so nothing to say she won't handle some cut in the ground and stable in fine form. RATING 98 1-3351 The Lark 37 3 8-10 Michael Bell An impressive winner of the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster last time, having been fourth to Talent in the Oaks earlier in the season. Runs off the same weight as that horse here and despite lat- est success, she arguably still has something to find to be considered as a serious rival. RATING 95 7-151 Waila 91 3 8-10 Sir Michael Stoute Stable has won this race twice in the past five years, and this lightly-raced filly benefitted greatly for a first-time hood on her latest start, when win- ning a Listed race for fillies and mares, over dis- tance at Newmarket, by 10 lengths. Could be more to come. Respected. RATING 97
1-1172 Talent 35 3 8-10 Ralph Beckett This season's Oaks winner who put a disap- pointing run in the Irish equivalent behind her when a fine second in the St Leger last time. Enjoys some cut in the ground and the one to beat if in the same form here. RATING 100

RACING NEWS.
Newmarket trainer Marco Botti will aim last Saturday's Group 2 Rockfel Stakes winner Al Thakhira for the $1m Juvenile Fillies' Turf at the Breeders' Cup meeting at Santa Anita next month. Al Thakhira, sired by Dubawi and owned by Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, has been quoted at 12/1 for the 2014 1,000 Guineas. Her stablemate, Planteur, also owned by Sheikh Al Thani, may also be head- ing to the US for the $5m Breeders' Cup Classic. Last season's Champion Hurdle-third Countrywide Flame will miss the current campaign after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in a hind joint. The dual Grade 1-win- ning hurdler's trainer John Quinn reported that the five-year-old will have six months off and will provisionally be brought back in time for the 2014 Cesarewitch. Trophee, a half-sister to this year's Arc win- ner Treve, finished fifth on her debut last week, in a one-mile maiden on soft ground. Her jockey, Thierry Jarnet, who rode Treve to victory in the Arc earlier this month, said "It was a good debut." The French racing authorities are reportedly set to emulate the success of British racing's Champions Series, and form their own cham- pionship by linking together many key races, grouped by distance. The championship will then conclude with the seven Group 1 races at Longchamp's Arc meeting in early October. The rise of major Flat owner Sheikh Joann Al Thani looks set to continue after he spent in excess of 10,000,000gns at Book 1 of Tat- tersalls' October Yearling Sales, in Newmar- ket. Amongst his purchases was a Galileo half-sister to the Oaks winner, Was, for whom he paid 5,000,000gns, a world record price for a yearling filly. Also at Tattersalls, a Galileo half-brother to the Oaks-runner-up Secret Gesture made the headlines when selling for 3,600,000gns, while the first yearling out of triple Group 1 winner Dar Re Mi, an Oasis Dream colt, sold for 850,000gns. Malton trainer Brian Ellison enjoyed a major success when Montefeltro won the Irish Cesarewitch last weekend. The race was Montefeltro's third win in four starts since he was purchased by Ellison two months ago for £10,000. The English Cesarewitch was won by Mark Johnston's 66/1 outsider Scatter Dice, who gave away 10 lengths when slowly away, but came from last to first to win by three lengths. In the US, Puerto Rico-born jockey John Velazquez has become North America's all-time leading jockey by earnings. A second- place finish in the ninth race at Belmont Park's meeting last weekend took Velazquez's career earnings to $297,922,320 (£187,691,061), beating the previous record set by Pat Day, who retired eight years ago. Velazquez first rode in the US in 1990 and won the Kentucky Derby aboard Animal King- dom in 2011. He has also twice won Ameri- can racing's prestigious Eclipse Award. War Command provided Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien with his first British Group 1 juvenile race win of the season when victorious in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday. Although the win prompted a couple of book- makers to bring War Command's ante-post price for the 2,000 Guineas in to as short as 8/1, some remained unimpressed by his hard-fought win over the 20/1 runner-up Cable Bay. After the race, O'Brien reported the ground was softer than War Command would have liked and will now be finished for the season.

The first Cheltenham meeting of the new season continues today, and here Betfair Ambassador Paul Nicholls talks exclusively about his five runners at the Prestbury Park venue...
14:00 Cheltenham - Aerial
Smart chaser on his day and finished a good second to Coneygree in a Grade 2 over 3m here in heavy ground last December, but he has form on good going, too. He bled when disappointing on his final start at Musselburgh and we couldn't get him right afterwards, so that was it for the season. This is very competitive but he has been going well at home, and has chances at his best. Goes well fresh, too.
14:35 Cheltenham - Woolcombe Folly
Has been running consistently well without winning and at least the handicapper is gradually beginning to cut him some slack, and he races off a 1lb lower mark than when second in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen in July. Has had a break since finishing third at Galway later that month. Conditions should suit but I still think the 10yo needs to come down a few more pounds to be competitive in a race like this. Will Biddick rides him though, and that is a big plus. He is a very good amateur, a champion point-to-point jockey, and good value for his 5lb claim.
15:10 Cheltenham - Sametegal
Excelled himself at the end of last season, following up his third in the Triumph with a second in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Those efforts give him every chance here, despite carrying an 8lb penalty, and he comes into this race in good form. In fact, I have trained him with this race in mind ever since he came back in. Is probably one of my best chances of the weekend.
15:45 Cheltenham - Sire Collonges
Is still paying the price for his bold-jumping defeat of Sea Of Thunder in a novice chase over this trip at this meeting last season, and I don't think he is particularly well-treated off a mark of 145 on the balance of his chase form. He can go well fresh and won't mind the ground, but I think he has it all to do off top weight. Will's 5lb claim will again help, though.
17:00 Cheltenham - Dark Lover
Is a very smart 2m hurdler on his day, and goes well at this track. Has schooled well in preparation for his chasing debut but there are a couple of potential negatives. One, the opposition looks pretty hot, as there are a few in here with a very decent level of chase form to their name already, such as Balder Succes and Sizing Italy. And, two, he ideally would want a fair bit of rain to be seen at his best. But he rates a decent prospect in his own right.

Betfair Ambassador Ryan Moore has five booked ride on what promises to be a fantastic afternoon at Ascot on Champions Day. Here you can read Ryan's exclusive thoughts and in-depth preview of each race that he is involved in...
13:45 Ascot - Estimate
She has done nothing but improve throughout her career - who knows, perhaps there is more to come from her - and she has to hold a strong chance here. Everything seems to be in her favour. She has the best form, doesn't carry a penalty for her Group 1 win, is proven on soft ground, is three from three on the track, and goes well after a break. That's a pretty potent combination.
It was fast ground when she saw off Simenon in the Gold Cup, but it was testing when she won the Queen's Vase over course and distance at the previous Royal meeting, so I don't think the going will be an issue at all. She hasn't raced since June - she was being prepared for the Lonsdale but had a setback - but she is fine now, working nicely, and we know that she is a filly who goes well when fresh.
This won't be a stroll in the park though, as she doesn't have that much in hand on form. You know what you can expect from the likes of Ahzeemah, Saddlers Rock, Times Up and High Jinx. Harris Tweed comes here in good form and is proven in the soft, but if there is an improver in the field it could be Eye Of The Storm. I rode him to finish second in the Sandown Classic Trial back in April and he showed he stayed this trip when winning a listed race last time. That was on fast ground though, so whether he stays 2m on soft ground on a stiff track we will see today. If he does, he is a threat.
14:20 Ascot - Heaven's Guest
On form and in the likely testing conditions, you would have to give Maarek a favourite's chance of following up his Abbaye win. And, if anything, 6f will suit him even better today. He is definitely the one to beat, but if he doesn't run up to his best then we all know that horses in these top sprints are like numbers on a roulette wheel. So it wouldn't be in the least bit surprising were it to be the turn of Slade Power, Balmont Mast, Jack Dexter or Viztoria, interesting stepping back in trip, to fall into the winning slot this time.
In Heaven's Guest, I go into the race with an outside shot. I got a late call-up to ride him in a valuable 7f handicap here a fortnight ago after Wentworth was withdrawn, and it proved very fortunate, as he posted a career-best to win that race off a mark of 100. The gap between the top handicaps and Group 2 sprints is pretty narrow these days, and he showed that he has the pace for 6f when winning for me over that trip when beating subsequent Group 2 winner Moviesta at Newmarket earlier in the season. I will be surprised if we maintain our unbeaten partnership today, but we have an outside place chance.
14:55 Ascot - Waila
She ran ok when fifth in the Ribblesdale here in June but she showed improved form when running away with a listed race at Newmarket last time, in a first-time hood, by 10 lengths. The form of that race isn't up to much but I was impressed with her there. She got struck into behind when winning that day, though, and that is why she has been off the track since. But she is in good shape, is working well and it is in her favour that she comes here a fresh filly.
She hasn't raced on ground this soft, but a lot of Notnowcato's like cut, and she is clearly lightly-raced and unexposed coming into this. This race lacks a real stand-out and is pretty competitive as a result, though I suppose that you would have to say that Oaks winner and Leger runner-up Talent is the one to beat on form.
15:30 Ascot - Gregorian
If Dawn Approach returns in the kind of form that saw him win the St James's Palace Stakes here or finish second in the Sussex Stakes, then he is probably the one to beat. But this could possibly be the softest ground he has run on, after a break since his Marois disappointment, so that is a question mark.
A lot of people thought that Maxios stole the race when beating Olympic Glory by five lengths in the Moulin last time, but I don't think that he did. I rode Gale Force Ten to finish fourth in that race and we simply couldn't lay up with the front two. A 6f sprinter set the pace, and Maxios was the only one who was able to lie up with her, so I don't think he was flattered at all. And I think a straight mile in a strongly-run race will suit him; he is a grinder and that will be what is needed here. I can see him going close to winning.
The Hannon camp think that blinkers have made a difference to their horse at home. If they have, then he obviously has to be respected as there is no doubting the merit of his short-head second to Moonlight Cloud in a very good Marois. My mount Gregorian disappointed in France a fortnight ago but he is a solid Group 2 horse at his best and he wouldn't mind any more rain. But, in all honesty, you can't really see him being good enough to win this.
16:05 Ascot - Ruler Of The World
Everyone knows things didn't go to plan on Ruler Of The World in the Arc, and I outlined exactly why, and what happened, in my piece here last week. Basically, he got hampered at a crucial stage of the race, and any winning chance that he had went there and then. My gut feeling was that he would have finished third with a clear run but, anyway, you had to be encouraged by the way he finished his race off to take seventh.
You are always taking a gamble bringing a horse out so soon after being primed for, and running in, a big race. But Aidan obviously knows what he is doing - Declaration of War won the International just 10 days after his Marois fourth - and I don't think that he will be inconvenienced too much by the step back to 1m2f. It may not be ideal and he may find good milers like Farhh a bit too quick for him, but he will like the ground and doesn't lack pace himself as he showed when quickening up in the Derby - and he travelled well throughout the race at Longchamp, too - and this track could suit him as well.
Obviously, I also know Hillstar very well. He has come up short in his two starts in Group 1 company so far and clearly has a fair bit to find with a peak-form Cirrus Des Aigles and Farhh. But there are various question marks over most of these in here - especially if it does turn out to be very testing - and I think 1m2f with plenty of cut in the ground could be Hillstar's optimum conditions. Although his best efforts have come on fast ground, notably his third in the King George, we know that he does handle soft and he has been pleasing the boss at home.
Cirrus Des Aigles has been improving with his racing this season but he has yet to show that he is in the same kind of form that saw him finish second to Frankel in this race last season. If he is, then he obviously will take all the beating.
I think I would have won the Arlington Million on Hunter's Light last time had he not hung left in the straight, so I am not surprised that the headgear is on. He will love the ground, and has real talent, but this is a much stiffer task than the one he faced in America last time.

A quiet weekend for Donald with a couple of runners at Kelso and a foray south with Life And Soul in the Listed novices' hurdle at Kempton.
Kelso
13.35 2m Maiden Hurdle - Plan Again
The form of his bumper win hasn't worked out particularly well but that's not his fault - he won well enough and he probably hit the front sooner than ideal. I don't think he would want too much rain but he's ready to go and this looks the right sort of race for him to start off in. I don't think there's a great deal in there against him and hopefully he will run a big race. As I say, the ground could be a concern as I am sure he wouldn't want it too soft but the owners are local and I would think he will run whatever.
14.10 2m7f Novice Chase - Witness In Court
This looks a warm novice chase for the track. He's ready to run and has done lots of work at home - he's schooled plenty and very well. As with Plan Again he wouldn't want it too soft but he's ready to go and we've got to get him up and running. As a winning pointer, I've always thought he was going to make up into a better chaser and although it would have been nice to find a softer race, they're becoming harder to find with these novice chasers!
Sunday
Kempton
15.20 2m Listed Novice Hurdle - Life And Soul
It looks a fair little race but you would expect that for a Listed event. He is going to have a break after this but we wanted to give him a run in a better event and there aren't that many suitable opportunities. He's got better with almost every run and it will probably suit him that there's a small field - he likes to go out and do his thing and we can but hope they leave him alone up front. Sea Lord is obviously the one to beat but it looks worth taking a chance before he goes off for his holidays.

Betfair tipster Tony Calvin turns his attention to the big meet at Ascot on Saturday and picks out a few horses worth putting your hard-earned on, including a big-priced runner in the race of the day...
Anyone who has been in their town centre on a Saturday night after closing time will be aware of the bedlam that ensues, but unfortunately aggression in the High Street doesn't often extend itself to bookmakers these days.
However, it's no-one else's business than their own I suppose - a private concern that they don't have to comment upon or justify to anyone, let alone the unquestioning media - so we move on.
But I just have a feeling that even the most conservative of bookmakers will be out to get the front two in the Champion Stakes at 16:05, in their shops on Saturday morning. It wouldn't surprise were one or two to offer 6-4 on Cirrus Des Aigles.
So maybe we will get that High Street sparring tomorrow morning, after all - and hopefully, it isn't simply the unedifying hangover of 24-hour opening. Actually, does that still exist?
Anyway, I digress.
One bookmaker is swerving 10-11 Cirrus Des Aigles at the time of writing. But even at the current, industry-best, price of 2.38 on Betfair, I struggle to think that many will be tempted in.
However, there are some less-than-confident vibes doing the rounds about Farhh - though they are not reflected at all in the Betfair market today, admittedly - which muddies the waters somewhat.
But, whichever way you view this race, it has the most attractive shape to it and I think you simply have to take on the front two. Both have excellent form claims but Cirrus Des Aigles is priced up more on last season's exploits to my mind, and Farhh has had a few niggles since winning the Lockinge back in May.
They are surely ripe for taking on, either if you are a layer, or a backer of the opposition.
I am in the latter camp this time, and I cannot resist an investment on Ruler Of The World and Hunter's Light at 9.0 and 34.0 respectively.
There was surprise when Ryan Moore got on board Ruler Of The World. But as we have already touched upon above, some decisions are as private as they are collective and quite why he did I guess we will never know, unless any of the parties involved in the decision tell us.
But I don't think that you have to be Inspector Morse to deduce that Moore simply fancies the Derby winner more than Hillstar.
And I think he has made the right call.
A lot of people think that he missed out narrowly in the Niel and got into trouble in the Arc because of his lack of tactical speed over 1m4f, and that will be even more exposed over 1m2f against pacier types here.
They could be right, but I am willing to pay to find out. He surprised Moore with the turn of foot he showed when winning at Epsom, he simply got into trouble in his Arc trial, and events overtook him in the Arc, rather than a lack of pace, as he travelled really well through that race.
I have a feeling that we will see him given a more prominent, aggressive ride, over this trip and I think testing ground on this stiffer track can see him win.
It is not often that you can back a dual Group 1 winner at 33-1+ - albeit a Group 1 winner in Italy and Dubai - but that is the case with Hunter's Light.
Now, Mickael Barzalona has his work well and truly cut on this horse, as it is prone to hang badly left, as he did when throwing away a winning chance in the Arlington Million last time.
But I suspect that the raw talent is there for him to go close here, and it is no surprise that a hood and a visor are on. If he doesn't end up in the stands, I think he could run a massive race, as trip and ground should be ideal for him.
Moore may have got off Hillstar but he rides for that owner-trainer combination on Waila, and she is worth chancing at 9.0 or bigger in the 14:55.
I don't think that this is a strong Group 1 at all, and Waila looked potentially top class when bolting up by 10 lengths at Newmarket on fast ground in July.
She has been off since then, but at least she comes here a fresher filly than most, and the ease in the ground is not expected to inconvenience her. She is the most unexposed in this field, and actually doesn't have that much to find with the likes of Talent on the bare form of that Newmarket win.
I can't get excited by Estimate at around the 2-1 mark in the opener, even though she is by far the likeliest winner and this race is full of exposed stayers. But if there is a horse that can improve past her it is Eye Of The Storm.
Back him at 9.0 or bigger in the 13:45.
He had the class to finish second in a good Sandown Classic Trial earlier in the season, and has proved that he stays and acts in testing conditions since then.
This is his stiffest task yet, in terms of class of opposition and stamina, but if there is a horse to lower the Queen's colours I suspect it is Aidan O'Brien's 3yo.
I like Maxios in the QEII and wouldn't put anyone him at around the 5-1 mark, and I was strongly tempted by Jack Dexter at around the same price in the sprint, but I don't want to throw too many darts at the punting board today, so I will pass.
I may have a personal each-way double to soften the pain if they both do win, though. Provided I can get on - rather than getting it on - in the High Street on Saturday morning, that is...
Recommendations
Back Eye Of The Storm at 9.0 or bigger in the 13:45 at Ascot Back Waila at 9.0 or bigger in the 14:55 at Ascot Back Ruler Of The World at 9.0 or bigger in 16:05 at Ascot Back Hunter's Light at 36.0 or better in 16:05 at Ascot

Missunited has been given the green light to contest the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp on Sunday week. Missunited: Longchamp assignment The ultra-consistent Mick Winters-trained mare has been a revelation on the Flat and over hurdles, winning 10 of her 23 races and over £250,000 in prize money. She has never raced at higher than Listed level on the Flat, winning at Galway and finishing second four other times in that Grade, but with soft ground almost guaranteed, Winters feels connections have nothing to lose. "She has the entry in France on Sunday week and I'd say she'd probably go there," said Winters. "That will be it then for the winter as she's been on the go a while. "It was the owners who picked out the race and they wanted to go. "She's still in good form, she just got touched off by one of Aidan O'Brien's (Eye Of The Storm) last time and he's off to Ascot. "There's a lot of prize money on offer in France and she looks in great order."

Harry Fry says his former Champion Hurdler Rock On Ruby is all set to meet The New One at Kempton on Sunday. Rock On Ruby: Ready to lock horns with The New One Rock On Ruby is the established star having won Cheltenham's blue riband event in 2012 before playing second fiddle to Hurricane Fly last March. The New One was an impressive winner of the Neptune at the Festival and he performed admirably when stepping up to open company at Aintree, finishing a half length second to Zarkandar. Fry revealed in his exclusive blog for StanJames.com that this weekend's contest is a stepping stone for targets further down the line. "We're treating it as a stepping stone for bigger targets in November and December, namely the Ascot Hurdle and the StanJames.com International. "Rock On Ruby did his last bit of fast work this morning [Thursday] before his run on Sunday and it went very much according to plan. We schooled outside on the grass yesterday and he was good and quick and sharp and fast so it's all very much systems go for Sunday." Fry said his stable star would "definitely come on for the run" and admitted it wasn't the plan to face an opponent as strong as The New One at this stage. He said, "We were hoping to get him out early in a race like this and sneak one in but the two-mile division this year is as competitive as ever. We're coming face to face with arguably one of the most exciting novices from last season in the Champion Hurdle picture. "He's followed a very similar route to Rock On Ruby having won bumpers and obviously we were just touched off in the Neptune and he was able to win that race very impressively. The Neptune for me is as good a pointer to a Champion Hurdle horse as anything else. So it's going to be a very interesting race." The New One's Champion Hurdle credentials will be given an early test on Sunday but his trainer, Nigel Twiston-Davies, is hopeful he has improved again. "He's in excellent form ahead of his run at Kempton on Sunday. It's early days yet. At the moment he's second favourite for the Champion, so that says it all," he told At The Races. "He's done everything we've asked of him. He's as good a hurdler we've had, so let's hope. Time will tell. That's why he's running - to find out. Last season was his first season as a hurdler now in his second season, hopefully he's improved again. That's what we're hoping." Rock On Ruby and The New One form part of a five-strong field with Australia Day, Quaddick Lake and Coronea Lilly. Elsewhere on the card, one of last season's leading novice hurdlers, Dodging Bullets, makes his debut over fences for Paul Nicholls in the William Hill - In App Store Beginners' Chase. The Listed William Hill - On Your Mobile Novices' Hurdle sees the John Ferguson-trained Sea Lord bid for his sixth consecutive win against Charlie Longsdon's hat-trick seeker Azure Fly.

Cheltenham Festival winner Our Conor has a pipe-opener on the Flat ahead of his return to the jumping scene when he lines up in the Woodlands 100 Club October Handicap at Naas on Sunday. Our Conor: Has a run on the Flat ahead of winter campaign Connections of the brilliant Triumph Hurdle winner are just hoping the four-year-old can do himself justice in this competitive Premier Handicap over a mile and a half. "He's fit and well. If he runs a good race I'll be happy," said trainer Dessie Hughes. "He wouldn't have to win it, jumping is his game but he's in terrific form." Stony Grey is on a hat-trick, adding to last month's Listowel win at Navan recently. "He came out of the race well last week. The ground doesn't matter to him and provided all is well he will run," said trainer Andrew Oliver. Dermot Weld saddles Show Court and Wandering Star and believes the former may have the better chance in the prevailing conditions. "It is a very good renewal of the race. Show Court has been very consistent all year, and hopefully he'll run another good race," said Weld. "Wandering Star has won twice from her three starts, but I would be very concerned about the ground for her. "She has only run on good to firm ground and it is debatable whether she would handle heavy ground." Ger Lyons is hoping for the best from Safe Home. "He is well and hopefully he will run a nice race," he said.
