12:11pm: since the watch is losing 6 minutes every hour, for every real hour that has passed, the watch will only show 54 minutes. Since the watch shows 10:39am, we know that 639 watch minutes have passed. This therefore equals 710 real minutes and hence 11 hrs 50 minutes. The watch stopped 21 minutes ago, therefore the time must now be 12.11pm.

Puzzle 143 The local library decided to hand out some of its old books to its 1400 borrowers. To each of the female borrowers they gave 6 books and to each male borrower they gave 4 books. If only half of the females in town and three quarters of the males in town accepted the books, how many books were given away?

4200 books. Only 1/2 of the females accepted the books, and those that did accepted 6 books, which is 3 books per female on average. Similarly, 3/4 of the males accepted 4 book each, which is again 3 book each. So both the males and females accepted, on average, 3 books each. And 1400 * 3 = 4200.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + (8 x 9) = 100. (1 x 2 + 3) x 4 x 5 + 6 - 7 - 8 + 9 = 100. -(1 x 2) + (3 x 4) + 5 + 6 + 7 + (8 x 9) = 100.

Puzzle 148 Last weekend I was given my pocket money, which is meant to last me all week. On Monday, I spent a quarter of my money on clothes. On Tuesday, I spent one third of my remaining money on a CD. On Wednesday I spent half of my remaining money on sweets. Finally on Thursday I spent my last £1.25 on a comic. How much pocket money did I receive? That reminds me I must ask the wife for more pocket money.

You beat me to it Liz. At first, I thought it was a trick question as there was no way to work out how many of the people were over and under 50. Then it dawned on me, that 1672 x 16 x 3/4 might be the same as 1672 x 96 / 8... and they were!

20064 fish: try a random number of over 50s, the number of over 50s does not affect the answer.

Lets go for a drive. Puzzle 152 A car travels at a speed of 64mph. Its fuel consumption is 28 mpg. It has a 11 gallon tank which was full when it started but at that very moment began to leak fuel. After 112 miles the car stops with a completely empty tank. How many gallons per hour was it losing?

4 gallons per hour. The car travelled 112 miles, using 4 gallons - therefore losing 7 gallons. The time taken to travel 112 miles was 1.75 hours. Therefore the car lost 7 / 1.75 gallons per hour.
