23 children (46 legs): with 230 ants (1380 legs), 3 puppies (12 legs) and 1 teacher (2 legs). If we call the number of puppies P, then there were (P + 20) children and 10 x (P + 20) ants, and a single teacher. If we now count the legs, we get: Puppies : P x 4 = 4P Children: (P + 20) x 2 = 2P + 40 Ants : 10 x (P + 20) x 6 = 60P + 1200 Teacher : 2 = 2 ----------- 66P + 1242 Giving 66P + 1242 = 1440, which means that P = 3, so there were 3 puppies, hence 23 children.

Going to the shops. See you later. Puzzle 132 A customer at a Asda '711' store selected four items to buy, and was told that the cost was £7.11. He was curious that the cost was the same as the store name, so he enquired as to how the figure was derived. The clerk said that he had simply multiplied the prices of the four individual items. The customer protested that the four prices should have been ADDED, not MULTIPLIED. The clerk said that that was OK with him, but, the result was still the same: exactly £7.11. What were the four prices?

Do you itch? Puzzle 133 Barry, BrainBashers best dog groomer noticed that Bert and Bess both had fleas. If one flea jumps from Bert to Bess, then both will have the same amount. However, if one flea jumps from the Bess to Bert then the Bert will have 5 times the amount of Bess. How many fleas do each dog have before any jumping takes place?

Bert has 4 fleas and Bess has 2 fleas. Let's say that Bert has x fleas and Bess has y fleas. We have two pieces of information: "if one flea jumps from Bert to Bess, then both will have the same amount", which means that: y + 1 = x - 1 (1) and "if one flea jumps from the Bess to Bert then the Bert will have 5 times the amount of Bess", which means that: x + 1 = 5(y - 1) (2) From (1) we can see that x = y + 2, which we can use in (2) to give: x + 1 = 5(y - 1) (start with 2) (y + 2) + 1 = 5(y - 1) y + 3 = 5y - 5 8 = 4y 2 = y If y = 2, then x = 4.

Have you got time for this one? Come on don't be shy post your answer. Its only a bit of fun. Puzzle 134 I recently gave a new watch to my friend for their birthday. However, as usual with my presents, it was quite useless as it gains 6 minutes every hour. I set it using my own accurate clock at midnight and the watch now shows 8.26am. I know that it stopped 30 minutes ago, so what is the correct time now?
Post by Kimmy on Apr 1, 2010 7:33:02 GMT
8.10am: since the watch is gaining 6 minutes every hour, for every real hour that has passed, the watch will only show 66 minutes. Since the watch shows 8.26am, we know that 506 watch minutes have passed. This therefore equals 460 real minutes and hence 7 hrs and 40 minutes. The watch stopped 30 minutes ago, therefore the time must now be 8.10am.

Anybody got time for this one? I bet you did a yawn after seeing the little man do one. ;D Puzzle 139 Exactly how many minutes is it before eight o'clock, if 40 minutes ago, it was three times as many minutes past four o'clock?
Post by BC on Apr 4, 2010 19:20:15 GMT
I've added the yawning man to my little collection! Maybe time for just this one. There are 240 minutes between 4pm and 8pm. Remove the "40 minutes ago", which leaves 200 minutes. Divide by 4 (3x + 1x) = 50 minutes. BC

50 minutes: between four o'clock and eight o'clock we have 240 minutes. In these 240 minutes we have 4 lots of the unknown time (t) and 40 minutes. Therefore 240 = 4 x t + 40. Therefore t = 50 minutes.

None: this table cannot exist as the longest side is longer than the two smaller sides combined.

Puzzle 141 I was recently given a new watch for my birthday. However, as usual with my presents, it was quite useless as it loses 6 minutes every hour. I set it using my friend's accurate watch at midnight and it now shows 10.39am. I know that the watch stopped 21 minutes ago so what is the correct time now?

Watch showed 10:39am at 11:50am so 21 minutes later the time is 12:11pm
