Didn’t quite get it right yesterday as the one that was without an outing left me with egg in my face, although I was pleased with the third one home. Let’s see if we can find some improvement today.
York 14.40 Cl 2 Handicap 155 (95.9) 8f gd/sf – 15 Run (14 at best)
Brunch 4-9-5 (101) Dr 6 (3.0)
’20 record: 3/1/7
’21 record: 0/1/1 Best: 193.9 off 100 carrying 9-5 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd Donc)
27/03/21 Cl 2 Hcap (515/98.4) 8f gd Donc 8-5 16/1 2/18 1.5 l off 100
in touch, headway over 1f out, ridden to lead approaching final furlong, headed inside final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (47 days);
Minus: up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: last win off 91 when beating Hartswood (+1) by 0.5l over C&D in late August before going down by 0.05l to Johan (-2) on gd/sf at Ayr off 97; opened season in the Lincoln where he beat all but the winner off 100; looks to be a worthy favourite.
Shelir 5-9-1 (97) Dr 10 (4.4)
’20 record: 1/2/9
’21 record: 0/1/2 Best: 188.5 off 95 carrying 9-0 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd/fm Hayd)
24/04/21 Cl 2 Hcap (106/92.8) 8f gd/fm Hayd 9-0 13/2 2/6 0.05 l off 96
soon led, pushed along 2f out, ridden inside final furlong, stayed on, headed post
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (19);
Minus: up 1lb (wt); up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: Irish import before last season and only got at the end of the season, finishing 1.5l 3rd to Ouzo (-3) off 95 here on sf; only just beaten on the post on his return. Which was a better return than Ouzo; not without an outside chance.
Mathew Flinders 4-9-3 (99) Dr 15 (6.6)
’20 record: 2/2/6
’21 record: 0/1/1 Best: 188.3 off 97 carrying 9-0 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd Newb)
18/04/21 Cl 2 Hcap (165/95.8) 8f gd Newb 9-0 7/2 F 3/16 1.5 l off 97
steadied start, held up towards rear, headway far side of group 2f out, ridden chasing leaders over 1f out, 3rd and one pace final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (25 days);
Minus: course; up 3lbs (wt); up 2lbs (OR);
Verdict: both his win have come at Doncaster, over 10f and 8f, off 82 and 92, whereas he’s failed to win in two outings at York; nevertheless, was impressive on has season opener in finishing 3rd in the Spring Cup at Newbury; not sure I like the high draw though.
Hartswood 4-8-12 (94) Dr 7 (9.3)
’20 record: 1/3/5 Best: 180.6 off 96 off 9-2 (Cl 2 Hcap 7f sf Donc)
’21 record: 0/0/1
01/05/21 Cl 2 Hcap (258/90.3) 8f gd/fm Thir 9-8 11/1 9/15 4 l off 95
tracked leaders, raced wide, outpaced over 2f out, kept on from over 1f out, no extra close home
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); recent run (12 days); down 10 lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus:
Verdict: won off 86 last year but only just got beat by Brunch off 92, and meets him on 8lbs better terms today; best not to read too much into Thirsk Hunt Cup run although he ran well enough, better expected today.
Of the two that are fancied I must admit that I have much more liking for Brunch than for Mathew Flinders. The only one that I could see upsetting him is Hartswood who does a little weight in hand on their running here last August. So let’s go Brunch from Hartswood, and then Shelir from Mathew Flinders.
