Ascot 15.40 Cl 2 Handicap 387 (98.5) 7f sf – 29 Run (27 at best)
Fox Champion 5-8-9 (95) Dr 2 (8.3)
’20 record: 0/0/6
’21 record: 0/1/1 Best: 181.2 off 95 carrying off 9-10 (Cl 2 Hcap 7f gd/fm Hayd)
24/04/21 Cl 2 Hcap (155/89.2) 7f gd/fm Hayd 9-10 4/1 Jt F 3/13 1l off 95
chased leaders, driven over 1f out, soon not clear run and switched left, went 3rd inside final furlong, ran on
Plus: class (F); distance (W); form run lto (14 days); down 15lbs (wt);
Minus: going (?); course;
Verdict: went AWOL as a 5yo but change of stable from Hannon to Beckett, plus a sizeable drop in the weights back to form; distance suits, but5 I’m not sure sf going will, plus its almost a decade since a horse from a single draw was successful.
On A Session 5-8-6 (92) Dr 28
’21 record: 0/2/2 Best: 176.3 off 92 carrying 9-2 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd/fm Thir)
01/05/21 Cl 2 Hcap (258/90.3) 8f gd/fm Thir 9-5 14/1 4/15 2 l off 92
prominent, headway to dispute lead 3f out, ridden over 1f out, headed 1f out, no extra and lost two places final 110 yards
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (7 days); down 14lbs (wt);
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: Irish import who looks as if 7f might suit better than 8f; only question is how he’s recovered from last week.
Acquitted 4-8-6 (92) Dr 20 (10.4)
’20 record: 0/1/3
’21 record: 0/1/1 Best: 176.1 off 91 carrying 9-7 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd Donc)
27/03/21 Cl 2 Hcap (232/85.8) 8f gd Donc 9-7 9/1 2/20 0.25 l off 91
tracked leaders stand side, ridden to lead entering final furlong, headed close home
Plus: class (F); form run lto (42 days); down 15lbs;
Minus: going (?); distance (?); course; up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: won 2/3 as a 2yo, a couple of Cl4 mdns; rather disappointed as 3yo, and distance not the only thing to blame when L/14 in a 10f hcap here in June on sf ground; finished L/9 in only other start at 3yo over 8f on gd at Sandown; dropped 2lbs for the Spring Mile at Doncaster and headed close home; raised 1lb for that, but not convinced the ground will suit even though he won a mdn on hvy as a 2yo.
Symbolize 4-9-3 (103) Dr 27 (10.9)
’20 record: 0/2/6
’21 record: 0/1/1 Best:186.6 off 102 carrying 9-4 (Cl 2 Hcap 7f gd Nwmk)
13/04/21 Cl 2 Hcap (108/95.8) 7f gd Nwmk 9-4 9/1 2/12 3.75 l off 102
keen close up, ridden over 1f out, chased clear winner inside final furlong
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (F); course (F); form run lto (25 days); less 1lb (wt);
Minus: up 1lb (OR)
Verdict: returned from gelding op with a promising 2nd in 7f hcap at Newmkt; only question is that he’s going up in weight compared to other horses; however, will not be worried by the sf ground nor the distance.
Jumaira Bay 4-8-3 (89) Dr 11 (11.1)
’20 record: 1/5/7 Best: 169.4 off 89 carrying 9-9 (Cl 3 Hcap 7f hv Newb)
23/10/20 Cl 3 Hcap (74/84.1) 7f hv Newb 9-9 10/3 2/7 1.25 l off 89
midfield, travelled well into lead 2f out, headed inside final furlong, kept on
Plus: going (W); distance (W); form run lto; down 20lbs (wt);
Minus: class; course (?); 197-day break;
Verdict: very consistent last season only failing to make frame on one occasion; sf going holds no terrors, and 7f appears his best distance; only question is how wound up he is, and the fact that head gear is not applied today.
Well, today marks the start of the cavalry charges and the rain has arrived to add to the fun. Perm any three from five is the trick today, but which three, or for that matter which five!
The first to go is Fox Champion, who may suffer from the low draw, while Acquitted may find the going a little too soft. The other three all have a shout in my book. I’m taking a bit of a chance on Jumaira Bay, but he has to be my first choice and I’m taking a chance on On A Session to find 7f suits better than 8f and although I think he’s got too much weight, Symbolize in third.
