Well did better than expected picking the third horse home, let’s hope I can do better today. And you know I’m not talking the Grand National
Aintree 16.15 Gr 3 Handicap Chase 315 (142.8) 25f gd/sf – 15 Ran (14 at best)
Snow Leopardess 9-10-10 (138)
‘20/21 record 1/2/5 Best: 276.4 off 135 carrying 10-13 (Gr 3 HCh 24f sf Weth)
16/03/21 Cl 2 Stks (528/) 30f gd/sf Chelt 10-13 16/1 4/12 17 l off 138
chased leaders on inside, outpaced in 5th when switched right before 2 out, went 4th from last, kept on but no impression
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); last time run (25 days); class down; 3lbs down (wt);
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: late taking to chasing, but has shown he has talent over fences by winning a Cl 2 at Haydock and then just missing out in Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby; was by no means disgraced in his latest outing at Cheltenham, finishing 4/12 over what may have been tol long a trip; certainly a sporting chance to at least make the frame here.
Happygolucky 7-11-7 (149) (6.4)
‘20/21 record 2/2/4 Best: 285.4 off 147 carrying 11-1 (Gr 3 HCh 25f sf Chelt)
16/03/21 Gr 3 HCh (464/143.9) 25f sf Chelt 11-1 100/30 F 2/16 5.5 l off 147
chased leaders, closed going well 4 out, went 2nd from 2 out, 1/2 length down when mistake last, held flat, kept on
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (25 days);
Minus: course (?); up 6lbs (wt); up 2 lbs (OR);
Verdict: novice chaser who has won 2 of his 4 starts and was made favourite for his hcap debut in the Ultima at Cheltenham last month, only going down to veteran Vintage Clouds who was not winning it out of turn; that was after a 95 day break so he should be ready make amends.
Cloudy Glen 8-11-0 (142) (13.4)
‘20/21 record 1/1/5 Best: 271.4 off 140 carrying 11-7 (Cl 2 HCh 26f gd/sf Chelt)
18/03/21 Cl 2 HCh (425/137.9) 26f gd/sf Chelt 11-7 33/1 2/21 6.5 l off 140
towards rear, not fluent 1st, mistake 9th and 14th, headway when mistake 16th, went 2nd after 2 out, no impression on winner flat
Plus: going (Wh); distance (W); form run lto (23 days); down 7lbs (wt);
Minus: class; course (?); up 2lbs (OR); up in class;
Verdict: second season chaser who has a couple of wins over fences, but may have been slightly flattered by his second win in the Southern National at Fontwell on his return and subsequent races suggested that he doesn’t really stay the marathon trips; fared much better in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham lto, although never threatening the winner was near enough 14l clear of Hold The Note (0) in 4th; likely the trip suits at present, although will not be helped by the drying ground; nevertheless, certainly has place hopes.
Happygolucky is a worthy favourite, but he may have ha d a harder race than some at Cheltenham and thus I’m prepared to take a chance on Snow Leopardess at longer odds to take the spoils now that he’s dropping in class and distance. So for me it’s Snow Leopardess from Happygolucky and Cloudy Glen who might not find the going soft enough.
Aintree 17.15 Gr 3 Handicap Chase 34.6f gd/sf – 40 Run
As I said I’m not suggesting the favourite, in fact I’m not even having a look at the race in detail, but from those that might make the frame I’m taking the obvious Takingrisks, Magic of Light and in hoping to see the first lady rider possibly win the race, Minella Times. AS usual, I’ll be amazed if one actually makes the frame!
