Try and find some form for Cheltenham, though how much time I’ll get to look is another matter! Only one handicap hurdle today, plus the supposed Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton. Luck will be needed!
Sandown 14.25 Gr 3 Handicap Hurdle 282 (134.2) 16f gd/sf – 15 Run
Last year – meeting abandoned
Langer Dan 5-10-10 (130) (8.4)
‘19/20 record: 2/2/5
‘20/21 record: 0/0/3 Best: 255.8 off 131 carrying 11-4 (Cl 3 HHd 16.5f sf Mkt Ras)
21/02/21 Cl 3 HHd (82/131.3) 16.5f sf Mkt Ras 11-4 9/1 4/7 6.5 l off 131
raced out wide, always in rear, 6th and struggling after 3 out, plugged on in modest 4th run-in
Plus: distance (W); form run lto (20 days); down 8lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); up 2 classes;
Verdict: initial promise wining a listed hurdle in November ’19, but ability declined and went for wind op; some promise back from 111-day break when 4th behind Miss Heritage (+1) and Mick Maestro (-1) who he meets on 2lbs and 6lbs better terms, respectively; entitled to improve for that run, but will it be enough?
Hasanabad 6-10-1 (121) (10.5)
‘20/21 record: 1/1/3 Best: 244.7 off 122 carrying 10-8 (Cl 3 HHd 16.5f gd Newb)
06/03/21 Cl 3 HHd (75/132.7) 16.5f gd Newb 10-8 18/1 3/10 12.25l off 122
raced keenly in mid-division, headway chasing leaders 4 out, left in 2nd on bend after 4 out, dropped to 3rd before 2 out, plugged on
Plus: distance (W); form run lto (7 days); down 7lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); up 2 classes;
Verdict: just the 3 hurdle starts, winning on his debut at Southwell in early September and finishing 3/10 on his hcap debut at Newbury last weekend; was 2.25l adrift of the more experienced Highway One O Two (+15) in second and meets him on only 11lb better terms today; will need to improve, but had only had 3 AW runs since September, so has scope for marked improvement.
One True King 6-10-11 (131) (18.1)
‘20/21 record: 2/3/7 Best: 247.1 off 125 carrying 10-11 (Cl 3 HHd 16.5f gd Chelt)
20/02/21 Cl 2 NHd (110/) 19.5f sf Ascot 11-8 100/30 3/6 11.5 off 131
led, pushed along and joined when bad mistake and headed 2 out, dropped to 3rd and not recover
Plus: going (W); distance (W); recent run (21 days); drop in trip;
Minus: class (?); course (?);
Verdict: useful form in the autumn, but has struggled of late upped in distance; maybe will appreciate the drop back in trip and better ground; not without a chance.
Natural History 6-10-12 (132) (33.6)
’21 record: 1/2/3 Best: 232.6 off 116 carrying 11-5 (Cl 3 HHd16f gd Plump)
01/03/21 Cl 3 HHd (62/116.6) 16f gd Plump 11-5 8/13 F 1/5 10l off 116
made all, quickened clear 2 out, comfortable
Plus: distance (W); form run lto (12 days); down 7lbs (wt);
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); up 2 classes; up 16lbs (OR);
Verdict: useful flat handicapper who has quickly made his mark over hurdles, winning his handicap debut with consummate ease; has been raised 16lbs, which could perhaps prove too much,
Usually goes to a young improver, and do we have some here! However, a 16lb rise in the weights tempers the attraction of Natural History and I think it might prove a little too much. Langer Dan looks a better suggestion after his wind surgery, but do Miss Heritage and Mick Maestro deserve to be so lightly respected, I wonder. From the foot of the handicap Hasanabad might go close, but again one should beware of Highway One O Two. However, in a race where I’m going to swerve the market leaders I’ll take a chance on One True King from Hasanabad and Langer Dan.
Wolverhampton 14.40 Cl 2 Handicap Stakes 187 (94.9) 8.5f AW – 13 Run
Last year – 311 (95.6) AW – 12 ran
Assimilation 12/1 4-8-8 (89) Dr 6 by 0.5l from Smile A Mile 20/1 4-8-8 (89) Dr 11
Pinnata 33/1 6-9-0 (95) Dr 7 was 2.6 l 5th
Tadleel 6-8-12 (92) Dr 5 (4.4)
‘19/20 record: 1/4/9
‘20/21 record: 2/1/5 Best: 182.5 off 88 carrying 8-5 (Cl 2 Hcap 7f AW Nwcs)
23/02/21 Cl 2 Hcap (187/94.5) 7f AW Nwcs 8-5 11/1 1/11 0.1 off 88
held up in 5th, headway on near side rail over 2f out, went 2nd 1f out, ran on under pressure inside final furlong, led final strides
Plus: class (W); AW (W); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (18 days);
Minus: up 2lbs (wt); up 4lbs (OR);
Verdict: consistent form since joining Fahey yard; campaigned mainly over 7f, but has won over 8f at Kempton and has form on only visit to Wolverhampton; has been raised 4lbs for latest success at Newcastle, but that negated by rider’s claim, plus rider has an excellent record for Fahey; very good chance.
Born To Be Alive 7-9-8 (102) Dr 10 (5.3)
‘20/21 record: 1/1/3 Best: 191/6 off 97 8-13 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f AW Kemp)
08/02/21 Cl 2 Hcap (118/94.6) 8f AW Kemp 8-13 18/1 1/10 1/5 l off 97
tracked leaders, ridden 2f out, led over 1f out, ran on well
Plus: class (W); AW (W); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (38 days);
Minus: up 9lbs (wt); up 5lbs (OR);
Verdict: missed all of last season but returned as good as ever and won at Kempton on his 3rd run back; Mission Boy (+3) was 3l back in 4th; 6lbs worse off, but likely to go close again.
Mission Boy 5-9-5 (99) Dr 13 (8.3)
‘20/21 record:
08/02/21 Cl 2 Hcap (118/94.6) 8f AW Kemp 9-2 10/1 4/10 3 l off 100
held up in rear, headway over 1f out, kept on
Plus: class (F); AW (F); distance (F); form run lto (38 days); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: course (?); up 3lbs (wt);
Verdict: foreign import for Botti who has just 2 starts in the UK, both on the AW; is 6lbs better off with Born To Be Alive for the 3l that separated at Kempton; booking of Moore has perhaps collapsed the price, but in with a chance of reverting the form.
A quick look at the Lincoln trial, though it’s not proved that good a trial in recent years. When I started, I thought that my choice Tadleel would be a decent price, but now I see it’s been backed into favourite. However, I’m not discarding him as I believe that he’s the one, from Born To Be Alive and Mission Boy.
