Cheltenham 15.35 Cl 2 Handicap Hurdle 109 (134.6) 24f gd/sf – 14 Run (12 at best)
Last year – 138 (129.7) 24f sf - 11 ran
Goodbye Dancer 13/2 8-10-5 (124) by 1.75 l from Ask Ben 11/4 F 6-11 3 (136)
Mohayeed 8-11-2 (141) (1.1)
‘19/20 record: 0/0/5
‘20/21 record: 0/2/2 Best: 274.5 off 140 carrying 11-4 (Cl 2 HHd 24.5f gd/sf Aint)
07/11/20 Cl 2 HHd (94/135.7) 24.5 gd/sf Aint 11-4 6/1 2/12 1.25 l off 140
rear of mid-division, pushed along after 3 out, headway 2 out, stayed on flat, went 2nd towards finish, not trouble winner
Plus: class (W+); going (F); distance (F); course (W); form run lto (34 days); down 2lbs (wt);
Minus: up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: losing run stretches back almost 2 years, but he seemed to enjoy the rise in trip when beating all but Unowhatimeanharry (+1) over the extended 24f at Aintree; still only 8yo, but it looks like time has passed him by on only 2lbs better terms.
Unowhatimeanharry 12-11-12 (151) (1.9)
‘19/20 record: 0/1/5
‘20/21 record: 1/0/1 Best: 283.7 off 148 carrying 11-5 (Cl 2 HHd 24.5f gd/sf Aint)
07/11/20 Cl 2 HHd (94/135.7) 24.5 gd/sf Aint 11-5 12/1 1/12 1.25 l off 148
held up rear of mid-division, mistake 4th, headway 3 out, led on bit last, ridden out flat
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (34 days);
Minus: up 3lbs (OR)
Verdict: turned up at Aintree in fine fettle and won with a but in hand; however, suspect that Aintree is not the nest place to trial for Cheltenham and while he may well beat Mohaayed again, there are others that will give him more of a battle.
On The Blind Side 8-11-11 (150) (2.1)
‘19/20 record: 1/3/5 4 chases and a bumper
‘20/21 record: 1/0/1 Best: 280.5 off 145 carrying 11-6 (List HHd 24 sf Chelt)
14/11/20 List HHd (137/135.5) 24f sf Chelt 11-6 7/1 1/10 0.25 l off 145
chased leader, hit 3rd, led after 3 out, hard pressed from 2 out, headed flat, led final 100 yards, held on well
Plus: class (W+); class (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (27 days); down in class;
Minus: up 5lbs (wt); up 5lbs (OR);
Verdict: maybe better hurdler than chaser and having won an AW bumper to round off last season, fought back well to win a Listed HHd here over 24f on return; raised 5lbs, which makes it quite an ask, but Fair Along won with 11-12 off 152 in 2008, so it is do-able.
Cotswold Way 7-10-3 (128) (2.4)
‘19/20 record: 0/1/6 all chase starts
‘20/21 record: 0/1/4 Best: 260.2 off 128 carrying 10-0 (Cl 2 HHd 21f gd Kemp)
09/11/20 Cl 2 HHd (95/134.5) 21f gd Kemp 9-11 10/1 4/10 2.37 l off 128
tracked leaders, ridden 2 out, kept on one pace
Plus: going (F); recent form run (32 days);
Minus: class; distance; course; up 6lbs (wt);
Verdict: very productive first season over hurdles, winning 4, but unable to get off the mark in 6 chase starts last term; started this season a bit flat on his return to hurdling, but better effort at Kempton lto and might improve over this longer trip.
Come On Teddy 6-10-2 (127) (17.6)
‘19/20 record: 1/1/4 Best: 244.0 off 122 carrying 11-4 (Cl 3 HHd 23f sf Mkt Ras)
‘20/21 record: 0/0/1 Best: 235.6 off 138 carrying 11-7 (Cl 3 HHd 23.5 sf Uttox)
22/11/20 Cl 3 HHd (59/127.6) 23.5f sf Uttox 11-7 16/1 4/13 25.5 l 4/13 off 128
held up towards rear, headway approaching 8th, no extra from 2 out
Plus: going (F); recent outing (19 days); down 19lbs (wt); down 19lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: class (?); distance; course (?); up in class;
Verdict: just 7 hurdle starts and won his hcap debut over 23f at Market Rasen in February; made return over 23.5f at Uttoxeter about 3 weeks ago and put up a reasonable performance before lack of fitness told, finishing 2/25l ahead of Vive Le Roi (+5) and a further 4.25l ahead of Impulsive Star (-1); meets the pair on 1lb worse terms and likely to confirm running as both had had prior runs; positive return and improvement likely.
Goodbye Dancer 9-10-0 (125) * 2lbs ooh (5.9)
‘19/20 record: 1/0/4 Best: 253.7 off 124 carrying 10-5 (Cl 2 HHd 24f sf Chelt)
‘20/21 record: 0/0/3
24/10/20 Cl 2 HHd (125/131.4) 24f gd Chelt 10-0 20/1 12/17 36.75 l off 126
in rear, ridden before 3 out, some late headway from 2 out but never dangerous
13/12/19 Cl 2 HHd (138/129.7) 24f sf Chelt 10-5 13/2 1/11 1.75 l off 124
held up behind, smooth headway on outside 2 out, came towards stands side rail and led when mistake last, ridden and edged left flat, kept on well towards finish
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); recent last run (48 days); down 1lb (OR);
Minus:
Verdict: won last year on debut for yard, but last fence faller in next race here in January; has done absolutely nothing since, although has not been helped by the gd going this season; yard in better form of late, but it would take a brave man to back him seeing as how last time he was a long way behind Cotswold Way.
I can’t honestly make a case for Goodbye Dancer, who has not been the same horse since falling here in January, so bye-bye Goodbye Dancer. I’ve got a different problem with Unowhatimeanharry and Mohaayed, as I don’t think the Aintree was a suitable trial for this, so that’s another pair gone. Of the three remaining, I’ve got to give On The Blind Side the nod, as he appears to be a far better hurdler than chaser and could still be improving. It’s tight for whose to follow him home, but I’ve got a feeling that Come On Teddy will get the better of Cotswold Way who is not really proven at this trip. So for me. On The Blind Side from Come On Teddy and Cotswold Way.
