You know when you’ve put your foot in it, and I sure did yesterday when suggesting that the 3yos weren’t perhaps quite up to it – they were a nk and a nk too good for my selection! Let’s hope I have better fortune today!
Doncaster 14.40 Cl 2 Handicap 123 (87.6) 5f sf – 11 Run
Last year – Meeting abandoned
Mighty Spirit 3-8-5 (84) Dr 11 (2.5)
’19 record: 1/6/9
’20 record: 0/3/6 Best: 169.1 off 86 carrying 8-7 (Cl 2 Hcap 5f gd York)
09/10/20 Cl 3 Hcap (97/85.5) 4f sf York 8-9 14/1 2/20 1.25l off 84
chased leaders, edged right over 1f out, went 2nd inside final furlong, kept on, no impression on winner
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (15 days); down 7lbs (wt);
Minus: course (?); up in class;
Verdict: has run well the last 3 starts, but this a little bit tougher than she’s tackled to date, stepping up in class again. (7)
Came From The Dark 4-9-7 (100) Dr 6 (4.7)
’19 record: 2/2/8 Best: 175.4 off 90 carrying 9-3 (Cl 3 Hcap 5f sf Asc)
’20 record: 1/1/4 Best: 182.9 off 95 carrying 9-6 (Cl 2 Hcap 5f gd Hayd)
10/10/ 20 Cl 2 Hcap (467/98.0) 6f sf York 9-6 25/1 16/21 11.95l 16th off 101
slowly into stride, raced towards near side, headway chasing leaders halfway, weakened over 2f out
26/09/20 Cl 2 Hcap (249/87.9) 5f gd Hayd 9-5 3/1 F 1/11 0.5l off 95
held up in centre, good headway between horses over 1f out, ridden to lead inside final furlong, edged left, ran on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); recent outing (14 days); down 1lb (OR); down 1f;
Minus: course; up 1lb (wt);
Verdict: won at Haydock, but is 3/1/5 there and no wins elsewhere; followed up by being down the field over 6f at York, although wasn’t really expected; will need a career best to win here despite being eased 1lb. (4)
Wrenthorpe 5-8-10 (89) Dr 9 (10.6)
’19 record: 2/3/11 Best: 155.6 off 78 carrying 9-1 (Cl 4 Hcap 5f hv Nott)
’20 record: 1/3/6 Best: 166.0 off 84 carrying 9-4 (Cl 3 Hcap 5f sf Nott)
14/10/20 Cl 3 Hcap (74/82.0) 5f sf Nott 9-4 9/2 1/10 1.75 l off 84
raced keenly, made virtually all, ridden over 1f out, edged left inside final furlong, ran on well
Plus: going (W); distance (W); form run lto (10 days); down 8lbs (wt);
Minus: class; course; up 5lbs (OR); up in class;
Verdict: has a fine record at 5f on gd/sf or softer, the only problem is that it’s all lower than Cl 2; despite a career best lto, he’s got it all to do off 5lbs higher going up in class. (15)
Not a race to write home about and I’m not too thrilled with the options, as I can’t see Wrenthorpe leading all the way. However, he may set a good enough pace for Mighty Spirit to swoop to victory and deny top weight Came From The Dark. So hopefully, Mighty Spirit from Came From The Dark and Wrenthorpe.
Newbury 16.45 Cl 2 Handicap 123 (91.4) 10f sf – 11 Run
3yo = 4lbs wfa allowance
Last year – Meeting abandoned
Aasheq 7-9-1 (90) Dr 9 (5.4)
’19 record: 1/2/4 Best: 190.9 off 96 carrying 9-2 (Cl 2 Hcap10.5f sf Chest)
’20 record: 0/1/5 Best: 176.0 off 86 carrying 8-7 (Cl 2 Hcap 10.5f sf York)
10/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (156/92.5) 10.5f sf York 8-7 10/1 2/13 0.75l off 85
tracked leader over 2f, chased leaders, went 2nd again 4f out, led over 3f out, ridden and headed inside final furlong, stayed on, always held
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (14 days);
Minus: course (?); up 8lbs (wt); up 5lbs (OR);
Verdict: has been a little slow to find his from this year but now the ground has shifted to the softer he is coming into his own; finished 2nd at York lto 2.75l ahead of Chatez (+5) and meets him on level weights today; should again prevail. (8)
Chatez 9-9-1 (90) Dr 3 (5.1)
’19 record: 1/0/2 Best: 194.8 off 88 carrying 9-4 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd/sf Newb)
’20 record: 0/1/6 Best: 176.3 off 89 carrying 8-13 (Cl 2 Hcap 10f gd Newb)
10/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (156/92.5) 10.5f sf York 8-12 20/1 3/13 3.5 l off 90
chased leaders on inside, switched right halfway, ridden and went 2nd 2f out until over 1f out, 3rd and one pace inside final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (F); course (W); form run lto (14 days);
Minus: up 3lbs (wt);
Verdict: not the horse he once was but put in a good effort behind Aasheq at York; doubtful he can overturn that running even on 5lbs better terms. (8)
Surrey Pride 3-8-11 (90) Dr 7 (14.7)
’19 record: 1/0/2
’20 record: 2/0/5 Best: 166.7 off 91 carrying 8-11 (Cl 2 Hcap 12f sf Nwmkt)
09/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (560/91.2) 12f sf Nwmkt 8-11 8/1 5/17 7.75 l off 91
towards rear, headway on inside from over 2f out, stayed on final furlong, nearest finish
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (15 days); down 1lb (OR); down 2f;
Minus:
Verdict: big step up lto after winning a couple of Cl 4 hcaps (one here) when he tackled a 3yo-hcap in Cl 2; he certainly got the trip and one wonders if his future lies in further not the drop to 10f. (8)
Tempus 4-9-10 (99) Dr 1 (M 0.2)
’19 record: 2/1/3
’20 record: 2/1/3 Best: 190.6 off 93 carrying 9-1 (Cl 2 Hcap 8f gd Ascot)
26/09/20 Cl 2 Hcap (747/97.0) 9f gd Newmkt 8-11 9/2 6/27 5.67 l off 97
close up, ridden over 2f out, kept on one pace final furlong
Plus: class (W); course (W); form run lto (28 days);
Minus: going (?); distance (?); up 9lbs (wt); up 2lbs (OR); up 1f;
Verdict: ran a fine race in the Cambridgeshire, but gave no indication that he would get the extra furlong; seems a mite short with that doubt. (11)
Another race in which there are questions, but I don’t expect Chatez to get back on the winning track today. I have my doubts about Tempus who is very short for a horse that has never run over the trip. Surrey Pride may shock a few and prove that currently 10f suits, but the one I think they’ve all got to beat is Aasheq. So, Aasheq from Surrey Pride and perhaps Tempus doing for Chatez.
