Got them the wrong way round last Saturday, but quite chuffed as I rarely get an Irish-trained winner. See if I can carry on the good work in the sprint at Doncaster.
Doncaster 14.40 Cl 2 Handicap 118 (91.1) 6f gf/sf – 12 Run
3yo – 1lb wfa allowance
Last year – 124 (91.4) hv – 12 ran
Bielsa 5/1 F 4-9-4 (93) Dr 1 by 2.25 l from Pendleton 5/1 3-8-13 (89) Dr 6
Bernard O’Reilly 25/1 5-8-5 (94) Dr 8 was 17.25l 10th
Aplomb 4-9-4 (92) Dr 9 (8.8)
’19 record: 2/2/9 Best: 184.8 off 94 carrying 8-10 (Cl 2 Hcap 6f sf Ascot)
‘20 record: 1/1/8 Best: 174.3 off 88 carrying 9-7 (Cl 2 Hcap 6f gd/sf Rip)
10/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (467/98.0) 6f sf York 8-12 12/1 11/21 7.35 l off 93
chased leaders in far side group, ridden over 1f out, weakened final furlong
26/09/20 Cl 2 Hcap (124/86.3) 6f gd/sf Rip 9-7 11/4 1/6 0.5 l off 88
restrained in rear, in touch but still last 2f out, ridden over 1f out, pressed leader entering final furlong, ran on strongly to lead close home
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); recent outing (13 days); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: course (?); up 6lbs (wt);
Verdict: hasn’t improved since last year, again winning off 88; cam forgive last run at York as he was drawn the ‘wrong’ side but only beat Broken Spear (-4) by 0.5l at Ripon and meets him on 2lbs worse terms today. (6)
Dazzling Dan 4-9-4 (92) Dr 5 (4.4)
’19 record: 2/2/7 Best: 192.1 off 99 carrying 9-4 (Cl 2 Hcap 6f gd Nwmk)
’20 record: 0/0/7 Best: 179.7 off 94 carrying 9-1 (Cl 2 Hcap 5f gd Nott)
13/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (120/91.0) 7f hv Leic 9-5 15/2 4/9 3 l off 92
led, ridden and headed over 1f out, one pace and lost 3rd final strides
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (10 days); down 1lb (wt); down 1f;
Minus:
Verdict: won twice last season but hasn’t managed to even make the frame this; however, the mark is slipping and tries over 7f lto, though was not leading at 6f. (11)
Jonah Jones 4-9-1 (89) Dr 3 (2.0)
’19 record: 0/0/3
’20 record: 0/3/5 Best: 178.1 off 89 carrying 8-8 (Cl 2 hcap 6f gd Asc)
05/09/20 Cl 2 Hcap (156/92.5) 6f gd Ascot 8-8 100/30 F 3/11 0.85 l off 89
slowly into stride, held up well off the pace in rear, headway when badly hampered inside final 2f, soon switched sharply right to wide outside, strong run inside final furlong, finished well, unlucky
Plus: class (F); distance (W); form run lto (48 days); up 7lbs (wt);
Minus: going; course;
Verdict: hasn’t won since his 2yo days, but has threatened on occasions, noticeably at Ascot, where he had anything but a clear run lto; seems to be a slow starter. (4)
Tranchee 4-9-6 (94) Dr 10 (4.1)
’19 record: 1/1/8
’20 record: 3/4/10 Best: 181.0 off 92 carrying 8-11 (Cl 2 Hcap 6f sf York)
10/10/20 Cl 2 Hcap (467/98.0) 6f sf York 8-11 9/2 F 2/21 2.25 l off 92
mid-division in centre, headway chasing leaders over 2f out, ridden over 1f out, went 2nd inside final furlong, no chance with winner
Plus: class (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (13) days;
Minus: going (?); up 9lbs (wt); up 2lbs (OR);
Verdict: has hit a rich vein of form since joining Loughnane’s yard and followed a C^D win here on gd with finishing 2nd to Gulliver in a valuable 6f hcap at York with Aplomb way back; looks a solid favourite,
The one that could be problematic is King’s Lynn, but 3yos don’t have a good record in the race an d his hcap debut in the Ayr Silver Cup is hardly inspiring. He may make the frame, as may fellow 3yo Aberama Gold, buy the one they’ve all got to beat in my book is Tranchee who is taken to win from perhaps Dazzling Dan with Jonah Jones taking third.
