A rarity, a Monday handicap. No apologies for Saturday, that’s the way it goes sometime, and I still don’t fancy it!! Fortunately we got the favourite at York.
Musselburgh 14.30 Cl 2 Handicap 124 (85.3) 7f gd/sf – 12 ran (11 at best)
3yo = 2lbs wfa allowance
Last year – 124 (92.4) sf – 9 ran
Blown By Wind 12/1 3-9-0 (93) Dr 1 by 3l from Montatham 7/2 3-8-9 (88) Dr 1
Three Saints Bay 12/1 4-9-8 (99) Dr 6 was 3.75 l 3rd
Muntadab 16/1 7-9-11 (102) Dr 4 was 13.75 l 8th
Idoapologise 3-8-10 (81) Dr 8 (9.9)
’19 record: 2/0/5
’20 record: 1/1/3 Best: 156.4 off 77carrying 9-1 (Cl 4 Hcap 7.5f Bev gd)
22/09/20 Cl 4 Hcap (47/79.4) 7.5f gd Bev 9-1 11/4 1/9 0.5 l off 77
mid-division, travelled smoothly into contention 1f out, pushed along to lead final 50 yards, all out
Plus: distance (W); form run lto (20 days); down 5lbs (wt);
Minus: class (?); going; course (?); raised 4lbs (OR); up 2 classes;
Verdict: first-time tongue-tie and return from a break did the job over 7.5f at Beverley lto; is up in class this time, but could improve again.
Marshal Dan 5-9-4 (84) Dr 1 (4.2)
’19 record: 2/3/9
’20 record: 2/3/5 Best: 168.1 off 83 carrying 9-5 (Cl 3 Hcap 7f gs Newb)
19/09/20 Cl 3 Hcap (74/85.1) 7f gd Newb 9-5 6/1 3/17 1 l off 83
in touch, effort over 3f out, challenged from 2f out, held and lost 2nd last strides
Plus: distance; form run lto (23 days); down 6lb (wt);
Minus: class (?); going; course (?); up 1lbs (OR); up in class;
Verdict: just lost out in the final strides lto, but previously had won a Cl 4 over 7f on sf. So won’t be inconvenienced by the going.
Northernpowerhouse 4-9-4 (84) Dr 7 (1.5)
’19 record: 2/4/8
’20 record: 2/1/5 Best: 170.8 off 95 carrying 9-11 (Cl 3 Hcap 7f gd Hayd)
18/09/20 Cl 2 Hcap (187/90.5) 6f gd/sf Ayr 9-3 33/1 4/24 4.35l off 87
midfield in centre, ridden and headway over 2f out, edged left but ran on strongly final furlong
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (23 days); up 1lb (wt); up 1f;
Minus:
Verdict: all 4 wins the last 2 seasons have come over 7f, and proved he doesn’t stay 8f the time before last; then tried the Ayr Silver Cup and was running on well at the finish; no surprise if he returned to 7f with a strong display.
Gale Force Maya 4-9-4 (87) Dr 5
’19 record: 4/3/9
’20 record: 0/4/4 Best: 170.2 off 87 carrying 8-12 (Cl 2 Hcap 6f gd Newmkt)
24/09/20 Cl 2 Fill Hcap (275/84.5) 6d gd Nwmkt 8-12 15/8 F 3/8 0.6 l off 87
held up in rear, headway on outside over 2f out, ridden and ran on inside final furlong, not pace to challenge
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (F); form run lto (18 days);
Minus: course (?); up 6lbs (wt); open hcap;
Verdict: yet to win over 7f, although he has hinted it may suit; however, not strong enough for me.
There are plenty of these who would make a good fist of it over 6f, but are unproven at 7f. They are not for me, including Gale Force Maya. Fahey has a couple of 3yo in at the bottom of the handicap, but I can’t fancy either. Three Saints Bay was 3rd last year off 99; the fact that he’s running of 86 this time round tells you about his chances. And I have a little bit of trouble with Idoaplogise, although he may prove me wrong. The one I fancy is Marshal Dan, though it looks as if others do too. An outsider who could run very well indeed, is Northernpowerhouse who looks as if he’s been set up for this. So its Marshal Dan from Northernpowerhouse and maybe Idoapologise.
