No luck yesterday where the winner was the one I omitted from my final three! And today is not a day where I will enjoy the racing, as the Newbury race is a virtual washout and the Ayr Bronze Cup is not really a race to be serious about. Maybe we’ll do better tomorrow.
Newbury 2.30 Cl 2 Handicap 123 (95.7) 12f gd – 10 Run (8 at best)
3yo = 7lbs wfa allowance
Last year – 162 (97.2) gd – 5 ran
Shailene 7/2 4-9-11 (99) Dr 3 by 0.5l from Soto Sizzler 13/8 F 4-9-8 (96) Dr 1
Scarlet Dragon 6/1 6-9-12 (100) Dr 6 was 1l 3rd
Scarlet Dragon 7-10-0 (104) Dr 7
’19 record: 0/0/5
’20 record: 1/0/4 Best: 196.7 off 97 carrying 9-2 (Cl 2 12f sf Ascot)
22/08/20 Cl 2 Hcap (1400/103.6) 14f sf York 9-4 40/1 7/21 6.27 off 104
raced wide held up, good headway under stand side rail over 3f out, led over 2f out, ridden and headed over 1f out, weakened final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (27 days); down 2f;
Minus: up 10lbs (wt);
Verdict: carrying 2lbs more off a 4lbs higher mark than when 1l, 3rd in this race last year; sure to run his race.
Dubai Future 4-9-11 (101) Dr 6
’19 record: 2/1/3
‘20 record: 1/1/6
24/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/96.8) 12f gd Rip 10-0 5/1 6/8 3.35l off 102
short of room and hampered after 1f, headway to lead 9f out, ridden 2f out, headed approaching final furlong, weakened inside final furlong
Plus: class (F+); going ((W); distance (W); down 3lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: course (?); 56-day break;
Verdict: won twice from three starts as a 2yo and looked the part at Meydan in the early months of the year, but can’t really be judged on his efforts back in England, even in first-time cheekpieces at Ripon in July; has since been gelded and makes his first start of his new career today.
Humanitarian 4-9-12 (102) Dr 5
’19 record: 1/0/3
Plus: going (F);
Minus: class (?); distance; course (?); 455-day break;
Verdict: hasn’t run since Royal Ascot last year, in which time he’s been gelded; haven’t a clue what to expect.
The withdrawal of two of the more fancied horses has left us having to guess at the fitness of two of the three contenders. And I don’t like guessing. If there are 8 runners, then I’d back Scarlet Dragon e/w, but otherwise no bet.
Ayr 15.55 Cl 2 Handicap 118 (79.0) 6f gd/sf – 22 Run
3yo = 2lbs wfa allowance
Last year – 187 (78.2) gd – 24 ran
Music Society 20/1 4-9-8 (81) Dr 9 by 1.25l Highly Sprung 40/1 6-9-2 (75) Dr13
Paddy Power 22/1 6-9-6 (79) Dr 15 was 2.12l 6th
Captain Jamieson 16/1 4-9-9 (82) Dr 8 was 2.87l 8th
Abstemious 3-9-5 (83) Dr 13 (- 2.1)
‘19 record: 1/1/4
’20 record: 0/2/8 Best: 164.1 off 82 carrying 8-9 (Cl 3 6f gd York)
06/09/20 Cl 3 3yo-Hcap (78/83.5) 6f gd York 8-9 14/1 3/16 0.35 off 82
towards rear in centre, good headway chasing leaders halfway, squeezed through over 2f out, ridden and stayed on towards finish, never quite going pace to challenge
Plus: going (F); distance (W); form run lto (12 days);
Minus: class (?); course (?); up 10lbs (wt); up 1lb (OR); up in class; takes on older horses for first time;
Verdict: 0.35l 3rd to Alben Spirit (-2) lto and meets him on 4lbs better terms today but suspect winner has more in hand; fitted with first-time cheekpieces today, which may help as will the softer ground; not for me though,
Call Me Ginger 4-9-5 (82) Dr 15 (- 0.4)
’19 record: 1/1/5
’20 record: 0/2/7 Best: 161.4 off 82 carrying 9-4 (Cl 3 6f gd Donc)
10/09/20 Cl 3 Hcap (97/83.4) 6f gd Donc 9-4 4/1 2/15 1l off 82
held up, ridden and headway over 1f out, soon chased winner, stayed on
Plus: class (F); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (8 days);
Minus: going; up 1lb (wt); up in class;
Verdict: only 1/12 but has promised to gain a hcap success on occasions, as last time at Doncaster; has a chance, but a little short in price for a one-time winner.
Alden Spirit 3-9-7 (85) Dr 18 (0.5)
’19 record: 1/1/3
’20 record: 2/1/5 Best: 163.5 off 80 carrying 8-7 (Cl 3 6f gd York)
06/09/20 Cl 3 3yo-Hcap (78/83.5) 6f gd York 8-7 17/2 1/16 0.25l off 80
raced near side, chased leaders, ridden to challenge inside final furlong, led final 100 yards, ran on
Plus: going (W); distance (W); form run lto (12 days);
Minus: class (?); course (?); up 14lbs (wt); up 5lbs (OR); up in class;
Verdict: won Cl5 all-aged hcap and then dropped to a 3yo-hcap to win a Cl3 with Abstemious (+2) in 3rd; gives him 2lbs today, but is obviously improving; has a chance at the weights.
Roundhay Park 5-9-3 (79) Dr 21 (1.9)
’19 record: 0/4/12 Best: 165.6 off 86 carrying 9-4 (Cl 3 6f gd Rip)
’20 record: 1/2/7 Best: 156.1 off 80 carrying 9-2 (Cl 4 6f gs Rip)
01/09/20 Cl 4 Hcap (65/81.1) 6f gd/sf Rip 9-2 5/1 2/15 1.25l off 80
midfield nearside, ridden over 2f out, headway and edged right, ran on well
Plus: going (W); distance (W); form run lto (17 days); down 6lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR)
Minus: class; course (?); up 2 classes;
Verdict: form as taken an upturn since fitted with cheekpieces at York in July and last time he had Music Society (+6) and John Kirkup (+5) behind him and with rider’s claim meets them on better terms today; not without a chance.
As always with these madcap sprint races you’re better sticking a pin in the top half of the draw. As Call Me Ginger is favourite, and they rarely win, and I think that Alden Spirit has a bit to do with a penalty, my pig-in-the-poke is Roundhay Park from Call Me Ginger and Alden Spirit.
