Having a good York for once, after yesterday making it two from three. However, have a nagging feeling that it might come unstuck today. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
York 13.45 Cl 2 Handicap 187 (95.9) 12f gd – 11 Run (10 at best)
3yo = 9lbs wfa allowance
Last year: 436 (96.2) gd/fm – 16 ran
Tamreer 33/1 4-8-8 (89) Dr 9 by 0.1l from Corelli 6/1 4-9-5 (100) Dr 13
Restorer 28/1 7-8-13 (94) Dr 1
Zabeel Champion 3-8-8 (94) Dr 3 (180.9)
’19 record: 1/1/2
’20 record: 2/1/4 Best: 170.9 off 91 carrying 8-11
30/07/20 Cl 2 3yo-Hcap (187/90) 10f gd Good 8-11 7/2 2/11 0.75l off 91 – 170.9
held up in mid-division, pushed along and outpaced over 2f out, rallied on outside 2f out, stayed on from over 1f out, went 2nd towards finish, not reach winner
Plus: class (W); going (W); form run lto (22 days); down 3lbs (wt);
Minus: distance (?); course (?); up 3lbs (OR); first run against older horses;
Verdict: improving sort and looks likely to be suited by a step up in trip.
Dark Jedi 4-8-12 (89) Dr 2 (184.9)
’19 record: 0/0/6
’20 record: 2/0/5 Best: 180.6 off 89 carrying 8-5 (10.5f)
02/08/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/91.8) 10f AW Nwcs 9-4 7/1 4/9 2.75l off 89 – 176.7
led on sufferance for 1f, headed and tracked leader, ridden along over 1f out, plugged on inside final furlong
18/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (374/99.8) 10.5f gd York 8-5 18/1 4/22 4.75l off 89 – 180.6
chased leaders, not much room over 2f out, edged left over 1f out, kept on same pace inside final furlong
Plus: class (F); going (W); course (F); recent form lto (F); down 6lbs (wt);
Minus: distance (?);
Verdict: moved from C Hills preseason and after a pipe-opener won hcaps over 9f and 10f at Hamilton and Ripon; stepped well up in class to contest the John Smith’s and finished a credible 4th; his effort lto on the AW at Newcastle suggested that he needs further; if that’s true, he’s in with an chance at the weights.
Restorer 8-9-2 (92) Dr 9
’19 record: 0/3/8 Best: 185.6 off 95 carrying 9-7
’20 record: 1/1/3 Best: 184.7 off 92 carrying 9-2
10/08/20 Cl 2 Hcap (129/94.8) 10.5f gd Chest 9-2 8/1 2/9 1.5l off 92 – 184.7
soon mid-division on inside, headway switched right stayed on into 2nd final 100 yards, no chance with winner
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (11 days);
Minus: course;
Verdict: runs off a 2lbs lower mark than last year and just a suspicion he’s better around 10f than 12f.
King’s Caper 3-9-1 (101) Dr 6 (187.9)
’19 record: 3/2/7
’20 record: 0/1/4 Best: 188.7 off 102 carrying 9-7
29/07/20 Cl 2 3yo-Hcap (187/91.7) 12f gd Good 9-7 16/1 6/10 3.95l off 102 – 179.8
tracked leaders, ridden over 2f out, stayed on final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (F); recent run lto (23 days); down 6lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: distance; course (?); takes on older horses for the first time;
Verdict: won at 8f as a 2yo, but best effort at 3yo was when 2nd in the Italian Derby; subsequently finished 6/10 in a 3yo-hcap over 12f giving the impression he may want further.
The one that could be anything is Alfaatik, but I can’t logically choose a horse that’s had just three runs in his life, the last in May last year. He may win, but not with my money. Restorer has bounced back this year, but to me he’s a better horse around 10f than 12f and while he’s likely to run better this year I can’t see him winning. I’m not being original in picking Zabeel Champion but he looks the typical Johnston sort and looks likely to appreciate the step up in trip. King’s Caper is another Johnston 3yo, but I expect to see him pushed down to third by Dark Jedi.
