Newbury 14.25 Cl 2 Handicap 97(94.8) 8f gd/sf – 10 Run (8 at best)
3yo = 7lbs wfa allowance
Afaak 6-9-13 (103) Dr 1 (197.8)
’19 record: 1/0/4 Best 205.8 off 103 carrying 9-3
’20 record: 0/1/3 Best 199.2 off 103 carrying 9-4 (lto)
31/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (311/100.4) 8f gd/fm Goodwood 9-4 25/1 3/14 2.25 l off 103 – 199.2
mid-division on outer, headway chasing leaders 3f out, edging right from over 2f out, every chance over 1f out, ridden and went 2nd inside final furlong, no extra in 3rd towards finish
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (15 days);
Minus: course; up 9lbs (wt);
Verdict: much improved effort in first-time blinkers at Goodwood a fortnight back, blinkers retained but only question is the weight, which is 5lbs more than he’s ever won with and the best he’s managed is 3.85l 5/21 in last year’s John Smith’s over 10.5f at York when he carried 9-12 off 108; chance if the blinkers work again, as has already matched his want this season..
Tempus 4-9-1 (91) Dr 2 (185.8)
’19 record: 2/1/3 Best: 179.1 off 91 carrying 9-1
18/10/19 Cl 3 Hcap (78/90.5) 8.5f AW Wolv 9-1 5/2 F 4/10 1.35 l off 91 – 179.1
mid-division, headway over 3f out, kept on and no extra towards finish
Plus: distance (W); form run lto;
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); 302- day break;
Verdict: has been favourite for every race he’s run in won a mdn and a novice stakes as a 3yo, before returning from a break to finish a close 4th over 8.5f ion his hcap debut last October; not seen since, and steps up in class today, but needs less than 7lbs improvement to make a mark here.
Orbaan 5-10-0 (104) Dr 9 (198.8)
’19 record: 0/1/2 Best 2/10 7f Stakes in France
’20 record: 1/1/3 Best 191.2 off 100 carrying 9-7 (2nd last)
25/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (107/92.1) 8f gd York 10-0 11/4 4/9 3.75 l off 104 – 189.1
slowly into stride, recovered into midfield after 2f, headway travelling well over 3f out, ridden over 2f out, ran on
09/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (100/91.2) 8f gd/sf York 9-7 25/1 1/12 1 l off 100 – 191.2
held up in mid-division, made good headway to challenge and led 1f out, pushed out and kept on well final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (21 days);
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: inmate from France and after finishing L/10 on debut proved that all wrong by taking a York hcap with 9-7; raised 4lbs for that over the same C&D, however, he as slowly away and could only finish 4th; off the same mark today, he might have a little bit too much weight today.
Jahbath 4-9-9 (99) Dr 5 (193.8)
’19 record: 2/0/3 Best 171.0 off 91 carrying 9-7 (Cl 3 AW)
’20 record: 0/0/1 Best 184.3 off 100 carrying 9-13
18/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/94.2) 8f sf Hayd 9-13 7/1 4/12 5.3 l off 100 – 184.3
not much room start and slowly away, held up rear of mid-division, driven over 2f out, stayed on from over 1f out
Plus: class (W); distance (W); form run lto (28 days); down 4lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: going (?); course (?);
Verdict: coming off 4 consecutive AW wins when 11/14 in UAE Derby in March 2019, not seen then until 4 weeks ago when a credible 4/12 at Haydock on sf; from the way he stayed on from 1f out he may want further, but possible he’s got the class to win this; needs to improve about 10lbs to feature today.
Already a pair of N/R – hope there’s no more – but the one that I fancy here is Afaak whose a proven weight carrier who looked to be coming back to form at Ascot. To follow him home I’m going to take a chance of Tempus being fit enough for his season debut and just see off Jahbath.
Doncaster 16.00 Cl 2 Handicap 97 (92.4) 7f gd/fm – 12 Run
3yo = 6lbs age allowance
Last year: 124 (89.6) sf – 10 ran

’20 record: 2/0/2
25/07/20 Cl 5 Nov (35/) 7f gd/fm Donc 9-9 4/9 F 1/9 0.5 l
nicely away, settled in mid division on the stands rail, switched out and headway over 2f out, asked for an effort and moved into the lead over 1f out, drew clear along with the second and pushed out to hold on in the final furlong
Plus: going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (21 days); down 18lbs (wt);
Minus: class (?);
Verdict: won both starts, including over C&D; now goes handicapping
Ghalyoon 5-8-8 (87) Dr 5 (179.4)
’19 record: 1/1/2 Best ? off 95 carrying 9-7 Cl 5 novice
13/07/19 Cl 5 Nov (45/?) 7f fm Salis 9-10 8/11 F 1/6 0.5 l off 95 - ?
always prominent, led after 1f, headed over 2f out, led again over 1f out, stayed on strongly
Plus: distance (W); form run lto; down 16lbs (wt); down 8lbs (OR);
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); 399-day break;
Verdict: has had a breathing operation since he was last seen and it’s about time he started earning his keep. as 3 races for a 5yo is not a lot; may start today, but just don’t know.
Breanski 6-8-7 (86) Dr 6 (178.4)
’19 record: 2/2/11 Best 173.6 off 84 carrying 8-7 (last year’s renewal)
’20 record: 0/3/4 Best 168.7 off 84 carrying 9-12 (3rd last Cl 3)

tracked leaders, ridden to lead entering final furlong, soon headed, kept on one pace
21/06/20 Cl 3 Hcap (67/85.8) 7f gd Red 8-12 12/1 3/12 0.5 l off 84 – 168.7
held up in rear, headway and switched left over 1f out, every chance inside final furlong, ran on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (29 days); down 14lbs (wt)
Minus:
Verdict: has won this for the past 2 years off 85 and 84, but this year tries off 86; needs to improve by about 10lbs on this best and as a 6yo is on the limit.
Magical Wish 4-9-2 (95) Dr 12 (187.4)
’19 record: 1/3/7 175.5 off 91 carrying 9-8 (2nd btn 0.25l Cl 3)
’20 record: 1/1/5 184.6 off 93 carrying 8-11 (Cl 2 AW Ling)
29/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (95/90.8) 7f gd Good 10-0 20/1 2/17 2.25 l off 94 – 180.0
close up, ridden to chase leader over 1f out, ridden to lead briefly just inside final furlong, kept on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (17 days); down 16lbs (wt);
Minus: course (?); up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: won on the AW back in March and looked to be close to that form at Goodwood lto; certainly within the limits on his recent form.
I haven’t a clue about Tinker Toy or Ghalyoon, but it might be worthwhile going e/w on Breanski and Magical Wish.
