Just the one hope today to save me from yet another blank Goodwood, Who knows, stranger things have happened!
Goodwood 15.35 Cl 2 Handicap 467 (96.4) gd/fm – 28 Run
3yo = 4lbs wfa allowance
Last year: 1556 (98.6) gd/fm – 28 ran
Khaadem 4/1 F 3-9-6 (107) Dr 3 by 2.75l from Open Wide 14/1 5-8-12 (95) Dr 8
Summerghand 12/1 5-9-3 (100) Dr 6 was 3.75 l 4th
Gulliver 33/1 5-9-3 (100) Dr 5 was 4.5 l 6th
Stone Of Destiny 33/1 4-9-3 (100) Dr 27 was 5 l 8th
Kimifive 25/1 5-8-9 (92) Dr 26 was 6.75 l 10th
George Bowen 33/1 7-9-5 (102) Dr 25 was 10.97 l 21st
Silent Echo 6-9-0 (98) Dr 20 (112.1)
’19 record: 0/1/3 ’20 record: 1/2/4
19/07/20 Cl 4 Hcap (97/98.5) 6f gd Newb 9-7 9/1 4/10 2.75 l off 99 – 94.4
held up, going well when not clear run inside final 2f, switched left over 1f out, ridden and ran on towards finish, not reach leaders
20/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (486/99.9) 6f gd Ascot 9-3 22/1 5/22 1.75 off 99 – 98.1
raced towards far side, held up, headway chasing leaders over 2f out, ridden and hung left over 1f out, ran on
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (13 days); down 7lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: course; up 2 classes;
Verdict: ran off the same mark when a close 8th in 2018 renewal; last year in recovery and promising runs this year; new trainer after Hunt Cup and not clear run may have damaged his chances lto, interesting.
Gulliver 6-9-9 (107) Dr 3 (111.7)
‘19 record: 2/4/15 ‘20 record: 1/2/5
18/7/20 Cl 1 Hcap (442/91.0) 6.5f gd Curr 9-12 11/2 2/16 0.05 l off 103 – 97.5
mid-division, pushed along and headway over 2f out, ridden to lead 1 1/2f out and 2 lengths clear 150 yards out, kept on under pressure, headed close home
20/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (486/99.9) 6f gd Ascot 9-6 12/1 4/22 1.52 l off 102 – 101.7
slowly into stride, raced centre to near side, held up and behind, good headway near side of group over 1f out, ran on towards finish, not reach leaders
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (14 days); down 8lbs (wt); drop 1lb (OR); drop in class;
Minus: course;
Verdict: carries 1lbs more off a 2lbs higher mark than last year; in good form though following up 4th in the Hunt Cup at Ascot with a last stride defeat in a Cl 1 at the Curragh, however, even with rider’s claim is still carrying more than last year.
Hey Jonesy 5-9-6 (104) Dr 15 (110.5)
’19 record: 0/2/7 ’20 record: 1/1/2
20/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (486/99.9) 6f gd Ascot 9-3 18/1 1/22 0.02 l off 99 – 102.5
overall leader towards far side, ridden over 1f out, just lasted
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (42 days);
Minus: course (?); up 3lbs (wt); up 5lbs (OR);
Verdict: first-time blinkers did the trick in the Hunt Cup where he just edged out Summerghand (+2); meets him 2lbs better terms, but Gulliver 5lbs and Silent Echo on 6lbs worse terms; not for the double methinks
Watan 4-9-5 (103) Dr 16 (108.5)
’19 record: 0/0/2 ’20 record: 0/1/1
19/07/20 Cl 4 Hcap (97/98.5) 6f gd Newb 9-11 11/1 2/10 2.25 l off 103 – 99.5
raced keenly tracking leader, head to one side and every chance over 1f out, soon ridden, went 2nd post, no chance with winner
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (13 days); down 6lbs (wt);
Minus: up 2 classes;
Verdict: ran a highly impressive return behind Nahaarr (-9) and if building on that can be much closer on 7lbs better terms; however, that was his first run in a almost a year, so he may ‘bounce’.
Nahaarr 4-9-3 (101) Dr 19 (107.1)
’19 record: 4/0/5 ‘20 record: 1/1/3
19/07/20 Cl 4 Hcap (97/98.5) 6f gd Newb 9-2 6/4 F 1/10 2.25 l off 94 – 96.1
mid-division near side of group, smooth headway from 2f out, led inside final furlong, ran on well
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (13 days);
Minus: course (?); up 1lb (wt); up 7lbs (OR); up 2 classes;
Verdict: it was the best Cl 4 I’ve seen lto, so I’m counting it as a Cl2; very impressive winner indeed and even with7lbs more today it may not stop him.
As usual, an impossible race in which to pick the winner. Hey Jonesy won his race in the Wokingham so I’m not looking for him to win again today, while Watan has only had the one race in a year, and that’s a tough ask. So that leaves me with three, Silent Echo, Gulliver and Naharr. I have to say that by the looks of it Nahaarr has a favourite’s chance to win and Gulliver runs well without winning that often. Silent Echo, on the other hand, is a bit of a speculative choice. So I’m going Nahaarr from Silent Echo and Gulliver.
