Well I was all around the winners in both races yesterday but couldn’t get the order right, a frequent trouble I have!! Will the favourite win today, or have I got it right this time?
York 2.45 Cl 2 Hcap 107 (90.7) 6f gd -14 Run (13 at best)
Last year – 311 (91.9) sf – 15 ran
Dakota Gold 10/1 5-9-2 (96) Dr 9 0.5 l from Muscika 5-8-8 (91) Dr 4
Golden Apollo 8/1 5-8-10 (90) Dr 14 was 1.8 l 4th
Camacho Chief 9/1 4-9-6 (100) Dr 8 was 3.8 l 6th
Hyperfocus 20/1 5-8-11 (91) Dr 15 was 5.37l 9th
George Bowen 8-9-0 (87) Dr 12 (103.4)
’19 record: 1/2/12 ’20 record: 0/1/2
07/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (93/94.0) 6f gd Pont 8-2 17/2 2/6 0.5 l off 86 – 89.4
tracked leaders, switched right over 1f out, headway to chase winner inside final furlong, stayed on towards finish
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (19 days);
Minus: up 12lbs (wt); up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: figures suggest that he’s not as good as he once was, but still capable on his day and had Golden Apollo a long way behind him lto; high draw not a help, but he may cope in a relatively small field, in what looks to be not as strong as usual.
Soldier’s Minute 5-9-12 (99) Dr 6 (98.3)
’19 record: 3/2/12 ’20 record: 0/1/3
15/5/19 Cl 2 Hcap (187/95.0) 6f gd/f, York 8-9 20/1 1/21 3 l off 92 – 96.3
chased leaders, led over 1f out, soon ridden, ran on strongly
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (W); recent outing (36 days); down 1lb (wt);
Minus: up 8lbs;
Verdict: after winning here had a run in all the big sprints, generally finishing mid-field; had a promising AW season over the winter and was making his seasonal debut when down the field in the Wokingham and needed the race, dropped 1lb but still hovering around the 100 mark; weight may beat it.
Golden Apollo 6-9-4 (91) Dr 5 (98.0)
’19 record: 1/3/12 ’20 record: 0/0/2
21/9/19 Cl 2 Hcap (374/90.7) 6f gd Ayr 9-4 12/1 1/24 0.25 l off 88 – 88.0
in touch, driven to chase leaders over 2f out, ridden and headway over 1f out, soon challenged, stayed on to lead final 100yds, pushed out
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); recent outing (19 days); down 2lbs (OR);
Minus: up 9lbs (wt);
Verdict: eventually got it all together in the Silver Cup last season, but hasn’t fired as yet this season and was a long way back of George Bowen (-7) at Pontefract lto and only meets him on 3lbs better terms.
Jonah Jones 4-9-3 (90) Dr 2 Dr 2 (94.6)
’19 record: 0/0/3 ‘20 record: 0/2/2
11/7/20 Cl 2 Hcap (249/92.6) 5f gd Ascot 8-12 11/2 JF 3/18 2.75 l off 90 – 83.6
behind, headway near side of group chasing leaders under pressure over 1f out, ran on into never nearer 3rd final 100yds
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (15 days);
Minus: up 5lbs (wt);
Verdict: won twice over 6f as 2yo, but showed nothing in 3 late starts as a 3yo; transferred from Dascombe stable between seasons; run into the frame in both his starts this season for new trainer, though both over 5f; stayed on lto in Cl2 at Ascot suggesting he might want 6f, this only 10th start, so he has scope for improvement.
Camacho Chief 5-9-12 (99) Dr 3 (93.5)
’19 record: 1/3/7 ’20 record: 1/0/3
5/7/20 Cl 3 Hcap (67/87.2) 5f gd Donc 9-7 4/1 1/11 1.25 l off 95 – 91.5
raced in mid-division, ridden and led over 1f out, kept on well final furlong
Plus: distance (F); going (W); course (F); form run lto (21 days);
Minus: class, up 5lbs (wt); up 4lbs (OR); up in class; up in distance;
Verdict: matched highest winning mark lto, but that was over 5f on gd going; if ground firms could be in trouble, and has yet to win over 6f; carries 6lbs more than when 6th in last year’s renewal, although runs off 1lb lower mark, frame best hope.
Wentworth Falls 8-9-8 (95) Dr 10 (91.8)
’19 record: 0/5/8 ‘20 record: 1/1/3
30/6/20 Cl 3 Hcap (67/85) 6f gd/fm Donc 9-4 7/2 F 1/13 2.25 l off 89 – 85.8
mid-division, headway chasing leaders over 2f out, led over 1f out, ridden and ran on well
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (26 days);
Minus: up 4lbs (wt); up 6lbs (OR); up in class;
Verdict: returned to winning ways when beating Muscika (-4) at Doncaster in a Cl 3; meets him on 4lbs worse terms today, which should be enough; however, never won in Cl 2 and unlikely to start as an 8yo, 7lbs better off with Soldier’s Minute for a 3l beating here last May and may have to bow to him again.
I’m leaving Muscika out, as not only is he returning on just two days’ notice by the has a few lbs to make up on a number of these. Camacho Chief is also left as he’s a 5f horse. Wentworth Falls has never won in Cl 2 and will find it hard to finish in front of Soldier’s Minute on last year’s form here. Golden Apollo showed form in winning the Silver Cup, but hasn’t shown a thing in two outings this year, so he goes too. That leaves me with George Bowen, Soldier’s Minute and the likely favourite, Jonah Jones. George Bowen is getting up there in age and has a high draw, but they do win from a double figure draw, occasionally, so he’s my pick. Soldier’s Minute is only making his second outing of the season – his first was in the Wokingham – so is a bit speculative, plus has a bit of weight to carry, so I’ll go for Jonah Jones to follow George Bowen home and hope the favourites don’t win today!
