Again a disappointing day, but let’s hope today works out better!
Ascot 14.25 Cl 2 Handicap 280 (95.8) 7f gd/fm – 20 Run
3yo = 7lbs wfa allowance
Last year: 934 (98.2) gd/sf – 23 ran
Raising Sand 7/1 7-9-7 (103) Dr 21 by 0.1 l from Kaeso 11/2 F 5-8-13 (95) Dr 23
Blue Mist 11/1 4-9-0 (96) Dr 27 was 2.6 l 3rd
Arbalet 14/1 4-9-5 (101) Dr 15 was 7.12 l 11th
Vale Of Kent 8/1 4-9-5 (101) Dr 9 was 9.37 l 13th
Blue Mist 5-8-11 (95) Dr 19 (109.8)
’19 record: 0/1/4 ’20 record: 0/1/2
20/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (226/94.4) 6f gd Ascot 9-4 7/2 F 9/19 4.6 l off 95 – 82.1
started slowly, behind in centre, kept on inside final furlong, never able to challenge
Plus: class (F); distance (F); course (W); recent form run (35 days); down (7lbs); up in trip;
Minus: going (?); no hcap win;
Verdict: was 3rd in last year’s renewal off 1lb higher mark; not matched that form this season yet, though beaten at the start in the Silver Wokingham won by Chiefofchiefs (0), meets him on 5lbs better terms today and may reverse running; however, not won at 7f, nor in a hcap, nor in class, though indicates he belongs; not a favourites chance in my book.
Mutamaasik 4-9-4 (104) Dr 14 (108.7)
’19 record: 4/1/5 ’20 record: 0/1/2
16/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (218/99.3) 7f gd/sf Ascot 9-5 7/1 3/23 2.25 l off 100 – 98.7
tracked leader centre, ridden to lead this group over 1f out, ran on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W). course (F); recent outing (14 days);
Minus:
Verdict: progressive last year and ran well in the Buckingham Palace stks; in light of that was made favourite for the Bunbury, but showed nothing; maybe something was amiss, but has a chance to show his true form today.
Cliffs Of Capri 6-8-13 (97) Dr 18 (108.6)
’19 record: 0/4/11 ‘20 record: 1/2/5
16/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (218/99.3) 7f gd/sf Ascot 9-1 20/1 4/23 2.75 l off 96 – 93.6
in touch stands side, switched over 2f out, ridden and switched right approaching final furlong, stayed on.
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W)l course (W); form run lto (39 days); down 1lb (wt);
Minus: up 1b (OR);
Verdict: dry run last year, but the fitting of blinkers saw him win at Meydan and saw him finish 4th in the Buckingham Palace stakes behind Jack’s Point (0), Mutamaasik (+4), clear of Shelir (+1) and Ebury (0) who had the worst of the draw, meets Jack’s Point and Mutamaasik on 3lbs and 1lb worse terms, respectively; if the blinkers continue to do the trick, not without a chance.
Chiefofchiefs 7-9-2 (100) Dr 12 (105.6)
’19 record: 1/0/7 ’20 record: 1/1/5
20/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (226/94.4) 6f gd Ascot 9-4 20/1 1/19 1.25 l off 95 – 93.6
raced near side, held up and behind, headway and weaved way through final 2f, chased leaders over 1f out, ran on to lead final 100yds, soon clear
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (F); course (W); recent run (28 days); down 1lb (wt); up 1f;
Minus:
Verdict: seems like a visor has reawakened his love for the game and after a close 3rd at Meydan on his 7f debut in February, he took the Silver Wokingham of his 6f debut; not disgraced in a Group 3 sprint at Newcastle lto; age against him, but unexposed at 7f.
Eshassy 3-8-1 (92) Dr 17 (100.7+)
’19 record: 1/0/4 ’20 record: 1/0/2
05/07/20 Cl 3 3yo-Hcap (97/81.5) 7f gd/fm Sand 9-5 9/4 F 1/12 0.02 l off 88 – 73.7
held up towards rear, headway on wide outside over 2f out, ridden chasing leaders over 1f out, stayed to lead towards finish, all out
Plus: going (W); distance (W); form run lto (20 days); down 18 lbs (wt);
Minus: class; course; up 4lbs (OR); up in class; debut against older horses;
Verdict: progressing nicely, but was all out to win a Cl 3 3yo-hcap lto; this is a big stepupo in class for which he may not be ready
Blue Mist has been favourite for 9 of the 13 races he’s run and only won 2, the best being a Cl 3 stakes. Granted he runs off 1lb lower mark than last year, but I don’t see him as a likely favourite. No do I fancy the bottom weight, Eshassy who might find this coming a little early in his career. I couldn’t believe Mutanaasik’s running in the Bunbury and feel that he might show his real form on his return to Ascot and to follow him home I’ll take Cliffs Of Capori and Chiefofchiefs in that order.
York 15.15 Cl 2 Hcap 197 (92.8) 8f gd – 9 Run
3yo = 8lbs wfa allowance
Greenside 9-9-11 (101) (98.8)
’19 record: 1/1/6 ’20 record: 1/0/2
05/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/90.6) 7f sf Hayd 9-7 3/1 F 1/9 0.1 l off 98 – 95.8
keen early, raced wide, tracked leader, ridden and every chance over 1f out, not much room and led inside final furlong, ran on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (20 days);
Minus: course (?); up 4lbs (wt); up 3lbs (OR);
Verdict: genuine, but will likely find it a bit difficult now he’s cracked 100 as a 10yo, will be thereabouts though.
Orbaan 5-10-0 (104)
’19 record: 0/1/2 ’20 record: 1/0/2
09/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (100/91.2) 8f gd/sf York 9-7 25/1 1/12 1 l off 100 – 98.4
held up in mid-division, made good headway to lead 1f out, pushed out and kept on well final furlong
Plus: class (W); course (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (16 days);
Minus: up 7lbs (wt); up 4lbs (OR);
Verdict: inmate from Fabre stable where he won in Listed company; fired on second start for O’Meara in convincing style over C&D with Tadleel (-17) 2l 3rd; could well confirm that running on 2lbs worse terms.
Tadleel 5-8-9 (85) (96.6)
’19 record: 0/2/4 ’20 record: 1/1/3
09/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (100/91.2) 8f gd/sf York 8-4 16/1 3/12 2 l off 83 – 77.6
raced in mid-division, pushed along for effort 2f out, switched right to challenge over 1f out, soon ridden and went left final furlong, stayed on well.
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (F); form run lto (16 days);
Minus: up 5lbs (wt); up 2bs (OR);
Verdict: meets Orban on 2lbs better terms, but that mightn’t be enough; nevertheless that was an improved effort.
Hartswood 3-8-2 (86) (91.0+)
’18 record: 1/1/4 ’20 record: 0/1/1
20/07/20 Cl 4 3yo-Hcap (50/76.9) 7f gd/sf York 9-7 11/2 3/16 0.5 l off 82 – 65.0
chased leaders, challenged over 1f out, driven inside final furlong, ran on
Plus: course (F); form run lto (16 days); down 19 lbs (wt);
Minus: class (?); going (?); distance (?); up 4lbs (OR); up 2 classes;
Verdict: wasn’t stopping when running on in a 3yo-hcap here a fortnight back, which suggests he may well find 8f to his liking, sure to come on for that run and a contender.
All credit has to go to Greenside for winning off a career high at Haydock, but I can’t see him setting another career high mark today. At the other end of the scale is the 3yo Hartswood who made a promising handicap debut and looks sure to build on that, although I’m always wary of Fahey’s other one, For the winner though I’m going for the top weight, Orbaan who now he has found his feet could well go on to improve. So it’s Obaan from Hartswood and Tadleel with the gallant Greenside not far away.
