Well another placed one, but that's all!
Newbury 16.00 Cl 2 Handicap 249 (94.0) 16.5f gd – 13 Run (12 at best)
Last year: 633 (97.4) gd/sf – 16 ran
Withhold 17/2 6-9-10 (107) Dr 12 by 1.75 l from Billy Ray 14/1 4-8-6 (89) Dr 4
Reshoun 12/1 5-8-12 (95) Dr 7 was 8.05 l 8th
Carnwennan 5/1 Jt F 4-8-11 (94) Dr 5 was 52.9 l 15th
Themaxwecan 4-9-10 (103) Dr 12 (107.4)
’19 record: 3/3/10 ’20 record: 0/1/2
17/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (226/100.8) 14f gd Ascot 9-7 16/1 4/16 5.0 l off 102 – 103.4
raced wide in mid-division, headway towards the outside when hampered 2f out, ridden and stayed on from over 1f out, 4th and one pace inside final furlong
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (32 days); up in trip;
Minus: course (?); up 3lbs (wt); up 1lb (OR);
Verdict: honest handicapper who goes best on gd/fm and over 16f; was 1.25l behind Selino (-5) and gives him just 1lb today; should be close.
Reshoun 6-9-3 (96) Dr 6 (107.0)
’19 record: 1/2/5 ’20 record: 0/1/2
10/07/20 Cl 2 Hcap (374/97.8) 14f sf Nwmkt 9-0 14/1 4/13 3.5 l off 96 – 96.0
in touch, pushed along and outpaced over 3f out, ridden and headway inside final furlong, nearest finish
Plus: class (W); distance (W); from run lto (9 days); up in distance;
Minus: going; course; up 3lbs (wt);
Verdict: runs off 1lb more than when 8th in last year’s renewal, but is only 2lbs higher than when winning over 16f at Kempton in November; probably needed the race in the Northumberland Plate and promising effort in the Bet365 Trophy at Newmarket; step back up in trip a plus and first-time visor replaces customary cheekpieces.
Rochester House 4-8-13 (92) Dr 3 (105.7)
’19 record: 3/4/14 ’20 record: 0/2/2
16/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (226/93.1) 20f gd Ascot 9-1 18/1 5/19 3.75 l off 92 – 88.3
in rear, ridden over 2f out, headway over 1f out, stayed on final furlong
08/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (95/93.3) 16f gd/sf Hayd 8-11 10/1 3/6 0.6 l off 92 – 90.7
keen tracked leader, ridden to lead over 1f out, headed inside final furlong, stayed on one pace
Plus: class (F); course (F); distance (W); form run lto (33 days); down 2lbs (wt);
Minus: course (?); drop in distance;
Verdict: promising stayer, but the way he stated on at Ascot looks as if he needs more than 16f.
Moon King 4-9-0 (93) Dr 4 (104.3)
’19 record: 5/0/7 ’20 record: 1/0/2
08/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (95/93.3) 16f gd/sf Hayd 8-10 2/1 F 1/6 0.1 l off 91 – 90.3
close up, pushed along over 2f out, headway over 1f out, ridden to lead inside final furlong, soon joined, ran on
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); recent outing (33 days); down 3lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR); drop in distance;
Minus: course;
Verdict: won 5 in a row to start last season improving 21lbs in the process; returned to win off a 10lbs higher mark on his first try at 16f at Haydock edging Blue Laureate (-2) with Rochester House (+1) and Themaxwecan (11) 3rd and 5th, respectively; Rochester House (-2) reversed that form over 20f at Ascot, which may have been a mite too far; could bounce back over shorter trip.
Selino 4-9-9 (102) Dr 8 (103.8)
’19 record: 2/3/6 ‘20 record: 0/1/1
17/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (226/100.8) 14f gd Ascot 9-2 8/1 2/16 3.75 l off 97 – 99.8
held up towards rear, headway 2f out, ridden and hung right from over 1f out, went 2nd close home, no chance with winner
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (32 days); up in distance;
Minus: course (?); up 7lbs (wt); up 6lbs (OR);
Verdict: improved to win last two starts last season, including over today’s trip at Wolverhampton; improved again to finish 2nd at Ascot over 14f giving the impression that today’s trip will suit much better; has been raised 5lbs for that, although only 2lbs less than he has carried to victory.
True Destiny, Rajinsky and Carnwennan are all a little low on my figures to feature. Plus I have a feeling that Reshoun has not improved since finishing 8th last year, so despite the fitting of a visor he is the first to go. I also have a feeling that Rochester House will prove better at further than 16f and might find the competition a little stiff today. Moon King on the other hand didn’t seem to stay 20f at Ascot but will be a different proposition over today’s trip. Stepping up from 14f at Ascot are Selino and Themaxwecan and there’s a good reason they’re top weights. So hoping that the going is on the faster side of gd, I’m going for Themaxwecan from Selino with Moon King 3rd.
