Dan Skelton has a 25 per cent strike-rate at Uttoxeter and that increases to 34 per cent when Harry Skelton is riding. They team up with Cause Toujours (2.55), who ran in the Champion Bumper last season.
Luca Cumani has a 42 per cent strike-rate at Brighton and a 26 per cent strike-rate with handicap debutants. He saddles Spinnaka (4.40), who finished second on her only previous course start.
Stuart Crawford has a 38 per cent strike-rate at Carlisle and that increases to an impressive 67 per cent with bumper debutants. He saddles newcomer Hecla (5.25).
John Gosden and Robert Havlin have a 50 per cent strike-rate when combining at Newcastle. They team up with Eldritch (5.45), who should come on for his Kempton run.

Newmarket: David Milnes
Wilson (2.30 Brighton, nap)
Shaped well when winning over seven furlongs here last month and fancied to defy a penalty. Luca Cumani's youngster is well drawn in stall four and can bounce out and make all.
Others to follow Brighton 2.00 Mr Gent, 4.05 Rockley Point, 4.40 Spinnaka, 5.40 Bella Alissa. Newcastle 5.45 Pioneertown, 6.15 Royal Residence, 6.45 Forest Dragon, 7.45 Corked, 8.15 Lewinsky
Lambourn: James Burn
Glacier Point (5.40 Brighton, nap)
Quick ground helped this filly strike at Chepstow in the summer, so hopefully conditions will remain on the decent side at a venue trainer Clive Cox does well at.
Other to follow Brighton 4.05 About Glory.
North: Colin Russell
Jan Smuts (5.15 Newcastle, nap)
Not the most reliable of performers but has a decent record over course and distance and fancied to give another good account off his current fair mark.
Others to follow Carlisle 2.10 Flemerina, 2.45 Quietly, 3.15 Carrigdhoun, 3.45 Slanelough, 4.20 My Little Cracker, 4.50 Dubai Angel, 5.25 Peters Cousin. Newcastle 5.45 Lopes Dancer, 6.15 Mountain Breath, 6.45 Gabrial The Devil, 7.15 Ray Purchase, 7.45 Beatbybeatbybeat, 8.15 Eddiebet, 8.45 Arcane Dancer. Uttoxeter 2.20 First Up, 2.55 Midnight Shadow, 3.25 Cloudy Too, 3.55 Sharp Response, 4.30 Dick Darsie, 5.00 Come On Louis.
West Country: Tim Mitchell
Bambi Du Noyer (5.00 Uttoxeter, nap)
Due to go up 11lb after last week's Exeter success when patiently ridden in first-time blinkers. Escapes a penalty and should take all the beating off the same mark.
Others to follow Brighton 3.35 Pick A Little. Uttoxeter 3.25 Secret Door, 3.55 Sir Ivan.
Racing Post Ratings: Simon Turner
Pick A Little (3.35 Brighton)
Knocking on the door in recent starts over this course and distance and a reproduction of his most recent form may well suffice in an ordinary race.
Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Corked (7.45 Newcastle)
Made an encouraging seasonal return at Chelmsford three weeks ago and Hugo Palmer's lightly raced filly can relinquish her maiden tag.
Longshot: Ed Quigley
Zabana (4.10 Punchestown)
On the comeback trail after injury, but is a Grade 1 course-and-distance winner and can't be ruled out if fully wound up.
Ireland: Tony O'Hehir
Sub Lieutenant (4.10 Punchestown)
A Grade 2 winner last season, he also finished second to Sizing John in the Kinloch Brae Chase, to Un De Sceaux in the Ryanair and to Fox Norton in the Melling. The Henry de Bromhead-trained eight-year-old gets the vote to get his campaign off to a winning start.

Ascot will not use its inner course for Champions Day on Saturday, officials confirmed on Thursday morning.
The prospect of testing ground for British racing's showpiece day meant Ascot had the back-up option of using its inner track, which is not watered in the summer, for races on the round course - the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and the Qipco Champion Stakes - on Saturday.
However, clerk of the course Chris Stickels reckoned that to be a remote possibility on Wednesday and it was confirmed on Thursday the action will take place on the outer track as planned.
The going on the straight course is described as good, good to soft in places, while it is good to soft, good in places on the round course after 4.5mm of rain from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning.
Conditions could, however, ease further with showers forecast up to and including on Saturday.
Declarations for Champions Day are due by late morning on Thursday.

We look to Ireland for the best of the action on Thursday. At Punchestown there are two Grade 3s, the second of which being the Irish Daily Star Chase (4.10) which pitches together Carlingford Lough, Outlander, Road To Respect and Minella Rocco.
The Buck House Novice Chase half an hour earlier (3.40) does not have the same strength in depth, but fans of Death Duty will no doubt be hoping his second start over fences goes as well as the first.
For those who would rather look back, there is also the John Shortt Legends Challenge Race (1.20), the equivalent of Doncaster's Leger Legends, which features Mick Kinane, Norman Williamson, Paul Carberry and some handy equine talent too such as Pallasator and Monksland.
Back in Britain, Brighton, Carlisle and Uttoxeter make up the afternoon diet, with Newcastle on in the evening. In France, three British raiders are among the field for the Listed Prix Isonomy for juveniles.

Drowne and water have proved an unfortunate combination for a second time, Steve Drowne being hit with a six-day ban at Kempton on Tuesday night for weighing in heavy after having a drink of water.
The standard suspension for such an offence is three days, but Drowne’s penalty was doubled as it was his second in less than six months.
Drowne was reported by the Kempton clerk of the scales for being 2lb heavier than when he weighed out for his ride in the closing 1m4f handicap on Honourable Knight, who finished third, beaten a length and a quarter.
And he was not alone in coming a cropper for quenching his thirst on a relatively warm and sunny day as conditional Ryan Day was banned for three days for the same offence at Huntingdon after riding Larkhall, who also finished third.
BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said: “This rule is in place in the interests of the betting public. Once a rider has weighed out there is no way for the public to be made aware of any fluctuations in their weight, and therefore what weight the horse they have backed will be carrying.
“For this reason we ask jockeys to try to maintain their weight as much as possible after weighing out, with a 2lb leeway.
“In certain circumstances further leeway may be provided, for example on a day that is pouring with rain and when all the jockeys are coming back wet and overweight.”
Drowne, who travelled on to Kempton after one ride at Leicester in the afternoon, said: “It was my fault, but it was the last race and I’d had a long day. The trouble is when you have a good sweat and have got light you tend to have a drink and it seems to come on more than it does normally.”
Drowne, joint-president of the Professional Jockeys Association, believes the rise in initiatives to improve health and wellbeing in the weighing room is having a positive impact.
“Jockeys have never been fitter and education has never been better,” he said. “I can’t remember the last time I saw a lad collapse through dehydration, but 15 to 20 years ago it would happen quite regularly.”

in today's sporting life.................... Ascot's regular Flat-racing track will be used on QIPCO Champions Day, clerk of the course Chris Stickels said in a statement. There was the alternative of using the inner circuit, on which jumps racing is usually staged, if conditions deteriorated markedly before declaration time on Thursday morning. But Stickels said: "With no appreciable rain overnight and a forecast suggesting only showers until Saturday, round course racing will take place as normal on the regular outer track. The inner track will not be used. "Only in the event of 'heavy' appearing in the going description pre-declarations or the expectation of such on Saturday would the switch have been made as per advertised at the time of races closing and subsequently. Murt Khan's focus falls on Carlisle as the National Hunt expert and professional punter looks for more profits on Thursday. 4.50 Carlisle preview Click here for racecard and free video form This race should be run at a real lick and out of those who like to make the running I quite like Elusive Theatre. I was taken with her aggressive technique at speed on her debut over chases at Cartmel. She then got in close to a fence next time and paid the penalty. I think she will give punters an exciting run for their money. There are quite a few unexposed types that could be well handicapped over fences but it’s a bit of a guessing game. A safer bet for me is sticking with a horse in form, is fit and is still handicapped to win - has shown real consistency since going chasing. Last time he ran a cracker pulling very hard early on and running all the way to the line on a stiff track over 2m 4f on soft ground. I mentioned last time he may have been a horse who wants a flat track, but I was proven wrong. The faster they go today the better and his experience over fences could prove vital. He could easily run into one or two that take to the chasing game but feel these conditions will bring out the best in him and he represents solid each-way value at 5/1. Race Programme 1.25 - QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 2) (Class 1) Click here for full racecard & free video form Established in 1873 as the Jockey Club Cup, this race was run at Newmarket until 2011, when it was moved to Ascot and renamed the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup. With two demanding miles (3,200 metres) of Ascot’s famous turf to negotiate, it provides a thorough test of stamina for Flat racing’s top stayers as they contest the final major long-distance race of the British season. The seven races in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance category vary in distance from the extended mile and six furlongs (2,920 metres) of Doncaster’s St Leger to the two and a half miles (4,000 metres) of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. The intermediate two-mile trip of the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup therefore provides the perfect distance for the category finale. 2.00 - QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) Click here for full racecard & free video form In 2015, the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes was upgraded from Group 2 to Group 1 status and, in response to its enhanced prestige, the race’s value was boosted from £350,000 to £600,000 establishing it as Europe’s joint-most valuable sprint. This six-furlong (1,200 metres) contest provides the grand finale to the seven-race QIPCO British Champions Sprint division. There are three Series races run over five furlongs (1,000 metres) and four, including today’s contest, over six furlongs. Many sprinters tend to specialise over one of these distances, but the true greats have the versatility to excel over both trips. The QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes has evolved from the Diadem Stakes, which was first run at Ascot in 1946. The first running under its current name was won by Deacon Blues, trained in Newmarket by James Fanshawe, in 2011. 2.40 - QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) Click here for full racecard & free video form The genealogy of the QIPCO British Champions Fillies’ And Mares’ Stakes dates back to 1946, when Ascot staged the Princess Royal Stakes for the first time. In 2008 it was renamed the Pride Stakes and moved to Newmarket, but it returned to Ascot under its current name in 2011. The new race was given a boost in its very first year as it was won by none other than the Investec Oaks and Preis der Diana (German Oaks) winner, Dancing Rain, a dual Classic heroine having her final European start. Simple Verse was the second Classic winner to claim the spoils in its short recent history when successful in 2015. The race was awarded Group 1 status in 2013 and now boasts prize money of £600,000, the latest increase of £50,000 making it Britain’s joint-most valuable fillies-only race. 3.15 - Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1) (Sponsored By QIPCO) (Class 1) Click here for full racecard & free video form Long recognised as Europe’s mile championship, 1,600 metre races come no bigger than this anywhere on the international stage. Carrying a cool £1.1 million in prizemoney, the race has entered a different stratosphere in financial terms, boosted from £250,000 in 2010 when it was run at Ascot’s late September meeting. It is now by far the richest mile race in Europe and one of the most valuable anywhere in the world. Named in honour of The Queen in 1955, the race has a roll of honour packed full of stars, including Brigadier Gerard (1971 & 1972), Known Fact (1980), Dubai Millennium (1999) and the awesome Frankel, who took the contest in 2011 in effortless fashion. The race also holds special memories for Frankie Dettori. It provided him with his first-ever Group 1 victory thanks to Markofdistinction in 1990 and six years later Mark Of Esteem was the third leg of his ‘Magnificent Seven’ when he won all seven races on that famous (or infamous if you were a bookmaker) Ascot card. 3.50 - QIPCO Champion Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) Click here for full racecard & free video form With £1.3 million in prize money, the QIPCO Champion Stakes over 1 mile 2 furlongs (2,000 metres) is the most valuable ten-furlong race in Europe. Following on from iconic races like the Investec Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes sponsored by QIPCO, this is the final, pulsating showdown in the British Champions Series Middle Distance division. The race brought a great heritage with it from Newmarket, where it had been run from its inception in 1877 until 2010. But the dramatic injection in prize money that accompanied its move to become the glittering highlight of the new QIPCO British Champions Day has changed its status completely. Each of the six renewals in the race’s new surroundings have produced top-quality fields and thrilling finishes. The first set the bar high, with French raider Cirrus Des Aigles getting the better of Aussie superstar So You Think with two champion mares, Snow Fairy and Midday, further behind. For quality and drama few races could ever match the 2012 running, when Frankel completed his career unbeaten despite unsuitable ground and a very slow start from the stalls. 2013 saw Farhh prevail in a three-way battle, while in 2014 we were treated to a spine-tingling duel between Al Kazeem and Noble Mission, who ultimately came out on top for Lady Cecil. In 2015, QIPCO British Champions Day dream team Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen (who have each enjoyed four winners on the day over the past six years) pounced late to land the spoils with Fascinating Rock. And then last year Almanzor capped a fine season with another brilliant victory. 4.30 - Balmoral Handicap (Sponsored By QIPCO) (Str) (Class 2) Click here for full racecard & free video form Named after the castle in Scotland that has belonged to the British Royal Family since it was purchased by Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria, in 1852, the Balmoral Handicap was inaugurated in 2014. A race known as the Balmoral Handicap had previously been staged over five furlongs at the Royal Meeting, discontinued in 2004 in favour of the new Windsor Forest Stakes for fillies and mares. The Ascot Executive always intended to bring the name back when the appropriate opportunity arose, and Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to it being re-introduced on QIPCO British Champions Day. The new Balmoral Handicap Sponsored by QIPCO, with its £250,000 race value, is the richest one-mile (1,600 metre) handicap in Europe. In its inaugural running, the race could not have had a more popular winner than Marcus Tregoning’s Bronze Angel, who had built up a legion of fans via his two triumphs, in 2012 and 2014, in another of Britain’s most prestigious handicaps, the Betfred Cambridgeshire. His victory also showcased an exciting new riding talent in the shape of 20-year-old Louis Steward. In 2015, although open to all jockeys, it was another apprentice who stole the show when 17-year-old Eddy Greatrex scored aboard Musaddas for Godolphin. A more established name, Andrea Atzeni, guided Yuften to success in last year's renewal. Ed Chamberlin previews QIPCO Champions Day and is backing Barney Roy to enjoy another moment in the sun at Ascot. I'll come clean here - when we set out on this journey with ITV Racing, Champions Day wasn't necessarily one I had circled in my diary as one of the massive days on the channel. In my time presenting football, a lot of people were looking to crab Champions Day, saying they got a bit lucky with Frankel, raising question marks over its position in the calendar at the tail-end of a long season, and suggesting the concept may well peter out. But how wrong they were. And how everybody's perspective seems to have changed - it's clearly a massive day in the Flat season and one I now have firmly highlighted as a fixture to savour. The only thing that can go wrong as far as I can tell is the weather in the next few days. So let's keep everything crossed and hope that all these superstars turn up on the day, because it has the potential to be a sensational day's racing. What's so great about it is the potential stories we've got lined up before us. Sport is all about stories, which includes big head-to-heads and some special match-ups. What's even more special is a big rematch and luckily we have a couple of them in store on Saturday. Follow Ed Chamberlin ✔@chamberlinsport The rematches are on: Big Orange v Order Of George, Harry Angel v Carravagio. Champions Day. Saturday. Ascot. ITV … 8:26 AM - Oct 17, 2017 7 7 Replies 20 20 Retweets 87 87 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy The first humdinger of a rematch comes in the very first race as it's Big Orange v Order Of St George II after their epic battle in the Gold Cup. And then the two sprinting sensations Harry Angel and Caravaggio go toe-to-toe again. Add to that, Aidan O'Brien going for a world record, you've got 'Mr Ascot' Frankie with a good book of rides and you've got the crowning of the season's champions. That is a proper day's sport and all six races are being shown live on ITV's main channel. One thing we've been extremely lucky with this year, especially through the Flat season, is that we've had a succession of great finishes. We've had the Coral-Eclipse, a lot of people will say the best of the lot was the Nunthorpe, but for me nothing quite beats the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. The Nunthorpe was quite remarkable with Richard Hoiles' memorable commentary and Dettori's premature celebration certainly added to the drama, but the Gold Cup tops the lot, with two warriors scrapping away. Big Orange stuck his long neck out to win that day, but just like the Nunthorpe when we built it up to be Lady Aurelia v Battaash, I feel there could be an intruder on the scene in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup this weekend. The horse in question is STRADIVARIUS, who I fancy could beat them both. Three-year-olds getting weight and cashing in has been a bit of a running theme this year and although Big Orange is slightly better off with John Gosden's youngster from their Goodwood Cup run, I do feel Stradivarius is still improving rapidly. That St Leger, in which he ran a screamer to be third, was a really good renewal of the race and he was just done for a bit of speed by two classy three-year-olds in Capri and Crystal Ocean, both of whom I've been trumpeting for most of 2017. So back up to two miles, on potentially softening ground which is going to be against Big Orange, I like the young up-and-comer to see off Order Of St George, who faces a big ask on the back of his fine Arc run. He was beaten here last year after running at Chantilly and I wouldn't rule out the same happening again. Click on the image below to back Stradivarius for the Long Distance Cup with Sky Bet... Stradivarius beats Big Orange in the Goodwood Cup There's no respite as we then go straight into the QIPCO British Champions Sprint and for me it's the race of the day. Prior to Royal Ascot, my regular reader (!) will know I thought Caravaggio was the second coming and even though he won that day, he definitely had the race set up for him on a plate and he hasn't quite gone as I thought he might. I've consequently transferred both feet, and the lot, into the HARRY ANGEL camp. If you said to me what's the one performance all year on the Flat that's really had the wow factor to it, it would have to be Harry at Haydock. Not just destroying them on ground we didn't think he'd quite like, but the sustained burst of speed which was simply incredible. I think he is the real deal. Again, it's the three-year-olds that I expect to dominate and while I feel a tinge of disloyalty having switched camps mid-season, I now feel very strongly that we've got a special one here in Clive Cox's speedster. Enable, the queen of the 2017 Flat season, is conspicuous by her absence in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, but there's every chance this race could be the one that draws Aidan O'Brien level with Bobby Frankel's incredible record of 25 top-class winners in a single year. Anyone who says O'Brien's the best trainer just because he has the best horses just needs to look at Rhododendron and how he's managed to get her back from all the troubles she's had to winning a Group One at Chantilly. Of course he has the best horses, but O'Brien is the best trainer, there's no doubt about that. But it's a brave man that has a strong opinion on any of these and I'm happy to take a punt on a couple at bigger prices. Firstly, ALYSSA for Ralph Beckett could be worth chancing. Beckett described her on ITV as a "bit of a cow" but she's clearly a talented one and her Park Hill form from Doncaster has worked out well with Aljezeera winning earlier this week. You probably can't rely on her solely so I'll be having a little nibble on SMART CALL each-way as well. I love this horse and would love to see him win for fellow columnist Richard Fahey. It's probably the toughest race he's had but he loves Ascot and if Churchill runs here then it might just make the market for Ribchester. Beat The Bank is a lovely horse and clearly in top form but it's surely a massive step up for him. Fahey said in last week's column he felt the favourite was still a progressive horse at the age of four and if the best is getting better still, then the rest have a mountain to climb. I'd be surprised if Cracksman had the raw speed to win over this trip around Ascot and I could see Frankie having to get to work on him early. That short straight demands a turn of foot and while Ulysses stands out in that regard, I've a nagging doubt that he might end up swerving this and going straight to America for the Breeders' Cup. My learned colleague Jason Weaver is bound to be keen on the chances of Brametot having tipped him in the Arc, where I felt he was a little bit unlucky not to finish a bit closer to the magnificent Enable, while Poet's Word is a horse I really like. It's amazing to think how he's come from handicaps to Group One level and he'll run a good race but I'm giving one more chance to BARNEY ROY. I honestly don't think he's had a race run to suit him all season and I couldn't believe they didn't field a pacemaker at York. Back at Ascot, which we know he likes after that St James's Palace victory over Lancaster Bomber, and with pace in the race to aim at, I'm happy to chance Barney again. Unlike some of the others he's missed those hard races in France and Ireland and he comes here really fresh and extremely well according to all reports.

The meeting scheduled for Haydock on Friday has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track. Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright had called an 8am inspection in light of an inclement forecast. However, persistent rain on Thursday - 17 millimetres fell between noon and 4.30pm - meant the inspection was brought forward. The meeting was due to be Haydock's final Flat card of the season.

Ascot is still bracing itself for a wet and windy afternoon on Saturday but clerk of the course Chris Stickels remains confident that Qipco British Champions Day will go ahead without a hitch. Stickels said on Thursday: “It’s not going to be very pleasant and it’s difficult to get a precise understanding what might happen as the forecasters are painting a changing and volatile picture. But the wind speeds have been downgraded a little to gusts reaching 40 miles an hour at their peak rather than 50. “The centre of the low pressure now seems as if it will head in the direction of Northern Ireland but we will still be on the periphery of that and it’s going to be windy and wet.” The official going remains the same with the Straight Course registering a Going Stick reading of 6.8, which translates as Good and Good to Soft in places, while the round course is Good to Soft and Good in places coming at 6.2. Ascot will not use its inner course for Champions Day, officials confirmed on Thursday morning. The possibility of testing ground for British racing's showpiece day meant Ascot had the back-up option of using its inner track, which is not watered in the summer, for races on the round course – the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and the Qipco Champion Stakes – on Saturday. But with those conditions now unlikely to materialise the action will take place on the outer track as planned.

Former Flat jockey Adam Carter was banned from racing for ten years on Thursday for his part in the corruption case which cleared trainer John Wainwright and professional punter John Wright of involvement. Carter was found to have carried out "about as blatant an example of a non-trier as one could get" when found guilty of riding the Wainwright-trained Blazeofenchantment other than on its merits at Southwell in June 2014 and passing the information of his plans so it could be used for betting purposes. A BHA disciplinary panel had given its verdict against Carter in August, finding his friend Paul Bradley and Peter Bennett guilty as well after the information was used to lay the horse, but opted not to impose a sentence until it had considered written submissions. During the inquiry Carter was labelled an unreliable witness after he had retracted allegations he had made in a statement he provided BHA investigators that he was ordered to stop Blazeofenchantment by Wainwright and Wright claiming he had been "brainwashed". Carter rode 52 winners over 11 seasons but told the hearing he was out of racing and had a job changing coinboxes at Tesco stores around Manchester. In its ruling the panel said it could find "no mitigating features of Mr Carter’s behaviour". "While it was not possible to say on the evidence available who might have caused or required him to stop the horse, there was no hint that he was under pressure from an unidentified source to do this," it said. "There were two aggravating aspects of his conduct. Firstly, there was the extraordinary series of changes of story that he has given over the years. "Secondly, there was the fact that he chose to initiate a route to profit [or perhaps additional profit] from his intended stopping ride by passing information to Mr Bradley that led in turn to Mr Bennett’s lay betting. "In the circumstances, the panel decided to impose a disqualification of 10 years from 19 October 2017 until 18 October 2027 inclusive." Bradley, also a former jockey who works for Tim Easterby, had admitted receiving information from Carter and passing it to Bennett but did not attend the hearing. The panel said Bradley was likely to have benefited little from Bennett's betting and in acknowledgement of his guilty plea imposed a disqualification of two years six months. Bennett, who won £2,000 from his lay bet, also did not take part in the hearing having claimed he had no case to answer. Though unlicensed he was excluded for four years.

Incidents such as the one that led to subsequent Gold Cup winner Coneygree being withdrawn at the start before his chasing debut at Plumpton almost three years ago should be a thing of the past. New raceday procedures and protocol regarding the way horses are checked at racecourses – the old ‘poor movers list’ – is to be replaced shortly by the launch of a new system titled the ‘suitability to race examination’. Currently horses are checked over by a BHA veterinary officer at the racecourse stables and at the start of races but under the new STR system, which has been given the thumbs up by the NTF (National Trainers Federation), they would be the subject of a prior examination. Under the new system horses identified as having abnormal movements will be checked over at a trainer’s yard by a BHA veterinary officer and the findings then logged on a system so that the results can be used on racedays as a guide for the on-duty racecourse veterinary staff Coneygree's enforced withdrawal enraged trainer Mark Bradstock and the horse went on to make a successful debut over fences at Newbury just 11 days later en route to winning the Gold Cup three and a half months later. Sensible step Bradstock’s wife Sara was quick to sing the praises of the new system on Thursday, saying: "It is definitely a sensible step forward and I understand the trialling of the new protocol has been going on for a while. "As a horse lover I do not want to see horses running if they are at risk to themselves and there are easily plenty more pluses than minuses regarding this new system.” The BHA’s director of health and welfare, David Sykes said: "The way in which the BHA checks certain horses are fit to race is set to change and the new method is called a 'suitability to race examination'. "It has been used informally over the last three months to assess the practicalities and gain responses from trainers. As a result of positive feedback these examinations will be rolled out on a permanent basis across all affected horses. “The reason for instigating this examination is to allow trainers and owners, their stable vets, and BHA vets to be confident that horses that arrive at the races with a history of idiosyncratic gaits will be able to race. It removes the problem of withdrawing horses on raceday once they have arrived at that racecourse because they are deemed at trot up to be lame. "It also allows the BHA vets to have confidence these horses have gaits that do not represent ongoing issues which could increase a risk of injury. This is a significant welfare initiative and, although it will never completely stop raceday injuries, it should give both the industry and the general public confidence that welfare is the prime focus of the racing industry.” NTF president Rupert Arnold echoed those sentiments, saying: "This is something the BHA has consulted the NTF on and it has been trialled with a few trainers already and they are satisfied it’s a reasonable way of moving to a new system. "The old 'poor movers list' had its flaws and this will be a far more robust system of making sure that the welfare of horses is paramount.”

For years it seemed nigh on impossible for a winner to be disqualified – now, for the second time in two days, a horse who passed the post first ended up second. On Tuesday Entangling was put down to the runner-up spot after dead-heating with Villette at Leicester. Fast forward to Nottingham on Wednesday, when the Henry Candy-trained Capton was demoted a place after crossing the line first, a short head in front of Frankie Dettori on the John Gosden-trained Jupiter Light in the 1m2f handicap. Edged left On this occasion Capton edged quite markedly left in the final furlong, and although he possibly did not even bump his rival, he certainly intimidated him and carried him left. In a nip-and-tuck finish the stewards decided that a short head between the pair made the difference between winning and losing even though Dettori never stopped riding. In fact embedded in the rule is a clause that states if the horse that was hampered lost more ground through the interference than it was beaten by then it should be awarded the race. In this case, that would appear to have been the case, but often in the past that seems to have been ignored. There were little reaction from the sparse crowd when the result was changed, although the opinions of the professionals were divided. Henry Candy, who trained Capton, typically took the reverse on the chin saying: "It was a shame but it was a matter of opinion, and the stewards seem to be tougher now." Although it made no difference to the outcome of the race inquiry Dane O'Neill, who rode Capton, was given a two-day suspension for careless riding when he allowed his mount to drift left.

in today's sporting life.............. Dutch Artist might be worth a little interest in a seven-furlong handicap at Redcar, says Chris Wilson. He has a tip for every race. Dutch Artist might be worth a little interest in a seven-furlong handicap at Redcar. Luck will be needed as a huge a field has been declared at the Tees Valley circuit, yet this daughter of Dutch Art remains appealing handicapped for new trainer Alan Brown. She rather lost her way for David O'Meara, so it was nice to see her kick on at Pontefract last time on what was her third outing for Brown. Dutch Artist did not get the breaks in Yorkshire and ended up finishing third, but it was reassuring to see her respond to Phil Makin's persuasions when push came to shove. A winner over seven furlongs last May, she is good enough to make an honourable fist of things off a career-low mark of 66. Kreb's Cycle can lead the charge at Newcastle for Ian Williams and Josephine Gordon. The three-year-old son of Helmet succumbed by just a head over seven furlongs at this track on his last outing but is expected to thrive back over a mile. Kreb's Cycle was well supported that day so any market move should be seized upon in the Heart North East Handicap. Wolftrap can be trusted to bring home the bacon in the John Deere Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton. Philip Hobbs' eight-year-old bumped into a tartar on his most recent spin at Uttoxeter last month as Souriyan proved much too sharp in a handicap hurdle just shy of three miles. That rival duly followed up at Stratford and was then considered good enough to run in the Silver Trophy at Chepstow last weekend. Wolftrap is highly unlikely to run into a similar sort of progressive animal at Wincanton, where he races off the same mark of 110. Danceintothelight can have a whale of a time back over two and a half miles when he runs in a handicap hurdle at Fakenham. Donald McCain's likeable grey nearly brought home a double on his most recent start as he went down by a head to Picture Painter. He was ever so slightly tapped for toe by the winner that day, though, so the decision to step back up in distance - a trip over which he won so well at Sedgefield in August - could be a sound move. After making a profit on each of the last three days, pro punter Murt Khan heads to Fakenham for today's best bet. 2.05 Fakenham preview Click here for racecard and video form Cliffside Park was an impressive winner on debut for Olly Murphy in a modest selling hurdle. His next appearance was over fences when disappointing with a poor round of jumping; three days later he was back over hurdles and ran well below par. He's giving weight to the opposition today and connections will be hoping the his mini-break sees him bounce back to form. That said I prefer his stablemate's chances - Hongkong Aventure. Dropping down to two miles on decent ground with blinkers on may be more his cup of tea and 15/2 is tempting. However, HONKYTONKTENNESSEE has caught my eye a few times during the summer and gets the vote. This trend has continued and two starts back I thought he hit the front too soon at Uttoxeter over fences. I put him up last time at Huntingdon and he was caught out wide early and a couple of jumping errors put paid to his chances. He didn't run too badly in the circumstances. This horse is quite a low jumper over fences and there's no reason why he cannot run to the same form over hurdles today. His last start over hurdles was at Sedgefield and he didn't seem himself in a race where the pace held up. On the balance of his form, a mark of 112 over hurdles looks very attractive and this is one of the weakest races he has contested in since joining the yard of Dan Skelton. With that in mind he's worth backing at odds-against. Recommended bet Posted at 0720 BST on 20/10/17. One lucky Sky Bet racing punter struck gold on Thursday when his £10, 10-fold accumulator made him over £23,000 richer. The winning customer scooped £23,623.32 from from his 10 successful picks, which consisted of 'win only' and 'place only' betting across Thursday afternoon's racing at Punchestown, Carlisle, Uttoxeter and Brighton. A key factor in this success was top trainer Gordon Elliott, who enjoyed six winners at Punchestown and this punter picked three of them in Pallasator, Ben Dundee and Felix Desjy. The bet could so easily have crashed in the 3.35 at Brighton when Pick A Little held on to win by a short head but after that the remaining four selections came home with plenty to spare. Sky Bet spokesman Michael Shinners said: "Winners weren't difficult to find this afternoon and the biggest price was 85/40. However, it just goes to show that for a stake of just £10, if you're fancied horses oblige you can win an awful lot of money." Ben Linfoot is backing a Newmarket raider who could be interesting on his handicap debut at Redcar on Friday. Recommended bet: Ben Linfoot's Daily Nap, October 20 George Scott sends an interesting handicap debutant up to Redcar in the shape of ESSENTIAL in the Racing UK In Glorious HD Handicap on Friday. The son of Pivotal shaped well on his second start at Kempton in March and looked a bit ring rusty on his first start since when second at Redcar last month. Still, he should come on for that run and an opening mark of 67 looks fair on his Kempton effort. With track experience in the bag he's taken to reverse form with Van Velde from last time over this furlong further trip with Jamie Spencer taking over in the saddle. Daily Nap record: -8.75pts
