Just In Time (1.50 Leicester)
This lightly-raced three-year-old showed dramatic improvement on three maiden runs when gelded and sent into handicaps this season, with form figures of 211. Winning over this trip at Goodwood and Kempton, he has gone up 13lb in the weights but that still might not be enough to stop him completing the hat-trick. In fact he was more impressive than ever last time out and, with course form, his stable in flying form and a nice racing weight, this looks a penalty kick.

Night Of Glory (3.55 Leicester)
The best race of the day can go to Andrew Balding and Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha with their runner, Night Of Glory, in receipt of a 6lb weight-for-age allowance. Being the only three-year-old in the field, he gets to race off 8st 6lb and with soft ground expected, he looks to have ideal race conditions. He's clearly capable of scoring off a mark of 93 and bumped into a real improver when second to Royal Line at Haydock last time out.

Brighton, 10 Oct 17 Race 1 - 2:10pm THE GARY ATKINS 40TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) Permission was given for TAAJUB (IRE) to go early and be led to post.
Race 2 - 2:45pm THE NORTH ROAD TIMBER COMPANY NOVICE AUCTION STAKES (CLASS 5) An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after there was interference approximately 1 furlong out between the winner, MOVE TO THE FRONT (IRE), ridden by Adam Kirby, and SING OUT LOUD (IRE), placed second, ridden by Hector Crouch. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. The Stewards considered that the interference was accidental as SING OUT LOUD (IRE) had become unbalanced when racing through a tight gap between MOVE TO THE FRONT (IRE) and the rail, which was exacerbated by the rider’s saddle slipping. They further considered that the interference had not improved the placing of MOVE TO THE FRONT (IRE), as the interference had occurred a furlong out, and the winner was always holding the runner up.
Following the race, Hector Crouch reported that his saddle slipped on SING OUT LOUD (IRE), placed second.
Race 3 - 3:15pm THE BEATTIE-FARRANCE NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) Permission was given for MIREK (IRE) to go early to post and be mounted in the chute.

David Egan, the rider of WESTBROOK BERTIE, fell approximately 2 furlongs out. The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. It was found that the interference was accidental and caused by the gelding clipping the heels of UNBRIDLED SPIRIT.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference just before the line when the winner, ENZO (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry, interfered with DUKEOFWALLINGFORD, placed second, ridden by Charles Bishop, which in turn interfered with BLOORIEDOTCOM (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Martin Harley. The riders were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved ENZO (IRE)’s placing as the interference had been minimal, with the sufferers losing little momentum, and ENZO (IRE) was always gaining having come with a fast run down the outside. Keniry was cautioned for careless riding as he had allowed his horse to drift left-handed without sufficient correction.

After being interviewed and shown recordings of the start, Greatrex explained that he had hold of the blindfold, but as the call for ‘blinds off’ had been given, the gelding had reared and then plunged forward unbalancing the him, meaning he was unable to remove it at the first attempt. His explanation was noted.

Bryan Cooper says he has been given an opportunity to reignite his career after being recruited by Alan Potts to become first choice on the jumpers he owns trained in Britain this season.
Cooper, 25, who landed the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Don Cossack, lost one of the biggest jobs in racing when he was axed as Gigginstown House Stud's retained jockey in July.
But he has been picked up by Potts, owner of reigning Gold Cup winner Sizing John, in a link-up that will begin immediately when Cooper partners two of the owner's Colin Tizzard-trained team at Ludlow on Wednesday.
Under the arrangement Cooper will be first-choice rider on the Potts stars based in Britain, such as Fox Norton and Finian's Oscar, while Robbie Power, who had been commuting from Ireland when required, will be aboard the owner's Irish-based horses headed by Sizing John.
Potts told the Racing Post: "Bryan Cooper is number one jockey in the UK, where Colin Tizzard is my main trainer, but if there are any other trainers in the UK, he would cover those horses as well. He'll be number two jockey in Ireland.
"Robbie Power is number one jockey in Ireland and number two jockey in the UK, so they'll work it between them."
Potts admitted he was surprised Cooper became available.
"I didn't expect to get him. I can't understand Gigginstown, but as he was available I offered him the position," he said.
Cooper is set to partner Exxaro and Mick Thonic on Wednesday and will also be in action at Chepstow on Saturday, when the exciting Finian's Oscar is poised to make his chasing debut.
"It's a great opportunity," he said. "I'll be in there [Tizzard's] from Thursday morning and I suppose I'll know a bit more after that, but it's a fantastic opportunity and I can't believe it to be honest. It's something that reignites a career."

Newmarket: David Milnes
Ship Of The Fen (3.20 Nottingham, nap)
Martyn Meade's youngster has improved steadily with his racing and ran into a good one when second at Goodwood last time. He has since impressed on the Al Bahathri.
Others to follow Nottingham 1.45 Al Asel, 2.50 Sam Gold, 3.50 Thaqaffa, 4.55 William Sayle, 5.25 Dubaitwentytwenty. Kempton 5.55 Moqarrar, 6.25 Spinnaka, 7.25 Eldritch, 7.55 Blue De Vega, 8.25 Atlanta Belle
3/1 Ship Of The Fen 3:20 Nottingham Lambourn: Nick Deacon
Glendevon (5.55 Kempton)
Richard Hughes has enjoyed a great season, and this colt looked sure to add to the tally when chasing home the hot favourite on debut last month. He showed plenty of inexperience along the way, and plenty of improvement is anticipated.
Others to follow Ludlow 1.55 High Wells, 3.00 Forever Field, 4.00 Bigmartre, 5.10 Presenting Pearl. Nottingham 2.15 Wear It Well, 3.20 Jazeel, 4.20 Medicean Ballet, 4.55 Italian Heiress. Towcester 3.10 Cool Macavity.
4/5 Glendevon 5:55 Kempton (AW) North: Richard Young
Polar Forest (5.25 Nottingham, nap)
Not at best over course and distance last week but takes a big drop in grade, is on a good mark and won't mind any of the forecast rain. His stable remains in tremendous form, they have won this race before and he fancied to go well at a price.
Others to follow Kempton 5.20 Isntshesomething, 7.25 Royal Reserve, 7.55 Out Do, 8.25 Fikhaar, 8.55 Breathoffreshair. Nottingham 1.45 Knighted, 2.15 Viscount Loftus, 2.50 Twisted Logic, 3.20 Baileys Excelerate, 3.50 Maldonado, 4.20 El Principe, 4.55 Indian Chief. Towcester 4.10 Frank The Slink.
17/2 Polar Forest 5:25 Nottingham West Country: Tim Mitchell
Poetic Lady (2.25 Ludlow, nap)
Progressive of late back up in distance and defied a higher mark to win a shade cosily at Fontwell last time. More needed after a 9lb rise but she is expected to cope well with it in a race that should be run to suit.
Others to follow Kempton 8.25 Evening Starlight. Ludlow 3.00 Braqueur D'Or, 3.30 Status Quo, 4.00 Mick Thonic, 4.35 Tempestateflorseco, 5.10 Lady Vesta. Towcester 4.10 Mount Oliver, 4.45 Celsiana.
9/4 Poetic Lady 2:25 Ludlow Racing Post Ratings: Paul Curtis
Mikmak (3.50 Nottingham)
Inconsistent profile, but has finished runner-up in better races under Dougie Costello and takes a notable drop in grade today off a career low mark.
14/1 Mikmak 3:50 Nottingham Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Prospectus (5.30 Gowran)
Although a beaten favourite at Galway last month, Gavin Cromwell's four-year-old was not beaten far and can make amends over this longer trip.
7/1 Prospectus 5:30 Gowran Park Longshot: David Revers
Bracka Lily (5.10 Ludlow)
The daughter of Mahler ran better than her finishing position suggested on debut at Down Royal, staying on steadily once getting the hang of things, and she could run well at an each-way price.
25/1 Bracka Lily 5:10 Ludlow Ireland: Tony O'Hehir
World War (5.00 Gowran Park)
This son of Galileo, runner-up on his last three starts, reverts to maiden company following couple of runs in handicaps, the more recent of which saw him run second to the much improved On The Go Again at Tipperary ten days ago. He can score for Ger Lyons and the title-chasing Colin Keane.

When James Doyle rides for Charlie Hills at Kempton it’s worth taking note, as the pair have a 44 per cent strike-rate at the track. They team up with Tai Sing Yeh (6.25), who should come on from his third at Catterick last month.
Jeremiah McGrath boasts a 35 per cent strike-rate at Towcester. That rises to 44 per cent when teaming up with Nicky Henderson and the pair combine with Cool Macavity (3.10), who is a winner over today’s 2m trip.
Manuel Fernandes gets on well with Prince Jai (Kempton, 8.55). He is two from two on the Ian Williams-trained gelding and is strongly fancied to complete the hat-trick.

I've been a fan of The Gipper since his winning hurdling debut at Chepstow, he's a horse who wears his heart on his sleeve and generally tries to make all at a decent lick. However, I do think he may be a better hurdler than chaser with his low, quick style of jumping. He's entitled to improve for his chasing debut but he may just be vulnerable to a horse with more scope. This leads me on to the selection, BIGMARTRE. Being an imposing-looking type, I was always led to believe he would make a better chaser than hurdler. Up to now he has recorded three wins from 10 starts in the UK and being only six years of age has the scope to improve even further. In the past couple of years he has won after a lay-off so fitness shouldn't be an issue alongside the fact he likes to race on a sound surface. With all these factors taken into account, the price looks a fair one. Mad Jack Mytton should put his recent chasing experience to good use but doesn't look thrown in, while Mick Thonic could find these conditions a tad sharp. ![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/a68317eb-baa8-4d30-8da2-3b93fc91e717.jpg) Bryan Cooper is looking to make the most of a "great opportunity" after being confirmed as the new first-choice rider for prominent owner Alan Potts' British-based string. The leading Irish jockey suffered a major blow earlier this year after losing the job as number one to Gigginstown House Stud, for whom he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Don Cossack. With opportunities on home soil having been thin on the ground, media speculation last month suggested Cooper could be about to make the move to ride full-time in Britain, but he released a statement saying "there are no significant agreements in place at this time and I will continue to be based in Ireland." However, Cooper has made fleeting trips across the Irish Sea in recent weeks to ride horses either owned or part-owned by Andrew Brooks and he is set to be seen on British tracks even more frequently in the coming weeks and months after agreeing to ride the Potts-owned horses that are based in the UK. The new relationship kicks off at Ludlow on Tuesday, with Cooper booked to ride the Colin Tizzard-trained pair of Exxaro and Mick Thonic in Shropshire. Cooper told Press Association Sport: "I'm definitely looking forward to it and it's a great opportunity. They (Potts and Tizzard) have some fantastic horses."

She provides a selection for every race. Ship Of The Fen can finally get off the mark for Martyn Meade as he switches to handicap company at Nottingham. The Champs Elysees colt has drawn a blank in three starts to date, but his efforts in novice and maiden heats have at least demonstrated a modicum of promise. The form of his initial third has not worked out brilliantly while his subsequent Sandown fifth appears to be nothing special, but there was much to like about his runner-up spot at Goodwood last time out. Beaten five lengths by Showroom that day, Ship Of The Fen could not make up the ground he conceded early on against what seemed to be a pretty smart front-running winner. Ship Of The Fen was staying on all the way, so an extra furlong in the Breeders Backing Racing EBF Nursery Handicap should suit while an initial mark of 75 could prove quite generous on the handicapper's behalf. 5 1 Ship Of The Fen36 28-9OR: 75 7/2 Form: 352T: M MeadeJ: S De Sousa Last run Live betting powered by Rosarno has been dropping through the ratings this term but he can arrest his decline in the first division of the 32Redsport.com Handicap. Rated 83 at the start of the year, Rosarno has been well below par on each of his five runs, with a fourth place at Sandown in June the best he has mustered. However, Rosarno has shown a preference for cut in the ground and he came good around this time last year, so perhaps he just thrives in the autumn air. A step down in both class and distance adds to his appeal. Sevenna Star looks the one to follow in the EBF Stallions Oath Restricted Maiden Stakes after finishing a fair second on his racecourse bow at Sandown last month. Blue De Vega definitely merits a second glance as he makes his debut for Robert Cowell in the ebfstallions.com Conditions Stakes at Kempton. Formerly trained by Michael O'Callaghan in Ireland, Blue De Vega shaped as a possible top-notcher during his juvenile days, winning the Group Three Killavullan Stakes on his final two-year-old start. His Classic campaign began in similar vein, finishing second to Awtaad in a Listed heat before going on to be third behind that same horse in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. However, he failed to really kick on from there and after finishing last of six runners behind Gordon Lord Byron in a Curragh Group Two in May, Blue De Vega made the switch across the Irish Sea. It remains to be seen whether this Lope De Vega colt can really make an impact over sprint distances, but he tackles six furlongs on this occasion and is certainly favoured at the weights, even if he is returning from a break. Ennjaaz was a narrow winner at Chelmsford last time but now his confidence is riding high, he can hit the mark again in the 32Red On The App Store Handicap. ![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/1cd4bd15-d6b9-4738-8685-cf742a4eecf7.jpg) Aidan O'Brien saddled the first two home in both the Fillies' Mile and Dewhurst Stakes 12 months ago and runners from Ballydoyle dominate the betting for the former race on Friday but his shortest priced runner for the latter contest is Sky Bet's 9/1 chance Seahenge. Here we take a look at some of the key statistics to have emerged from the last 10 renewals of each contest. Darley Dewhurst Stakes, Newmarket Saturday October 14 Only Frankel and Belardo have prevented Irish trained runners from completing a clean sweep in this seven furlong contest with O'Brien and Jim Bolger responsible for four winners apiece. Both are set to be represented this weekend with Verbal Dexterity the closest challenger in the betting to hot favourite Expert Eye. Sir Michael Stoute's runner has had less racing than any recent winner and been off the track for longer than any of them but both Shamardal (2004) and Sir Percy (2005) came straight to Newmarket from the Vintage Stakes and the former was also unbeaten in two starts at that point. It is hard to knock his claims and the shortest of the Ballydoyle runners, Seahenge, was eight lengths behind him at Goodwood (albeit when very easy to back) so has plenty of ground to make up. Verbal Dexterity comprehensively reversed form with Beckford from the Railway Stakes to the National Stakes and the latter contest has produced the winner of the Dewhurst in five of the last 11 seasons. The highly regarded Emaraaty was impressive in a novice stakes at Newbury but all recent winners of the Dewhurst brought pattern form to the table and his debut defeat at Sandown last month can also be viewed as a negative. There have been shocks in this race and if there is to be one, perhaps U S Navy Flag is the likeliest candidate. He's already had nine starts but is thriving on his racing and showed a good attitude to win the Middle Park Stakes last time. Intense Focus (Bolger, 20/1) and Beethoven (O'Brien, 33/1) had raced eight and nine times respectively when lifting this contest but it's worth noting that both were running in visors for the first time. 4 Expert Eye74 29-1OR: 117D Form: 11T: Sir Michael StouteJ: Andrea Atzeni Last run Six winners won their preceding start, nine finished in the first four. Three winners were unbeaten. Six winners had won a race at Group Two or above and all bar one of the exceptions had been placed at Group Two or above. Seven winners had won over seven furlongs or beyond. Six favourites have been successful but three winners have been returned between 20/1 & 33s. Eight winners made their debut after April. All winners had raced at least three times. All winners ran in a Group race on their preceding start. Seven winners made a successful debut, those that were beaten made their debuts in May over 6 furlongs. bet365 Fillies' Mile, Newmarket Friday October 13 O'Brien has sent out Rhododendron, Minding and Together Forever to win the last three renewals and the last two of those came into the race on the back of prominent showings in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. O'Brien saddled the first three home in this year's renewal of the seven furlong Group One with Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Happily upsetting the Ryan Moore ridden Magical with September in third; all three are among the entries but the first two ran at Chantilly on Arc day and the betting suggests that September has been saved for this race. September was also beaten in the Debutante Stakes but had won the Chesham prior to that and can be expected to relish the step up to a mile. Godolphin saddled three consecutive winners between 2010 and 2012 but all recent winners of this race have had more experience than course and distance winner Magic Lily. The May Hill Stakes had been a key guide to this contest prior to the Ballydoyle domination and the first and third (as well as the O'Brien trained fourth, Sizzling) could line up. Third home Nyaleti has been beaten again since, prompting the handicapper to drop her another 2lbs to 108 having been as high as 113, but it has always been worth focusing on the winner of that Doncaster race and Laurens is hard to knock. Karl Burke's filly makes some each-way appeal at 6/1 against September. 5 Laurens29 29-0OR: -D Form: 121T: K R BurkeJ: P McDonald Last run Winners have been priced between 4/7 and 28/1 with seven 10/3 or shorter. Six favourites (including one joint) have been successful with a further three placed. Winners had had between two and five career starts. Four winners were unbeaten, two had won only once and one was a maiden. Four winners had their preceding start in the May Hill Stakes, three were successful and the other was second. Accordingly, eight winners had their preceding start in September. The exceptions ran on August 28 and October 12. Eight winners finished no worse than third on their debuts with five successful. Eight winners were by a sire with a stamina index of 8.8 or greater.

Thursday's meeting at Ayr must pass an inspection at 8am on the morning of racing due to the threat of heavy rain.
On Wednesday the going at the track was described as heavy, with three millimetres of rain having fallen by 10am. A further ten millimetres of rain could hit the track by Wednesday afternoon, which has led to officials calling a check.
It has been a challenging few weeks for the Scottish course, with the season's highlight, the three-day Western meeting, lost due to a patch of waterlogged ground in the home straight.
As a consequence, the remaining two Flat meetings of the season, including Thursday's card, were moved to the hurdles track.
Ayr clerk of the course Graeme Anderson said on Wednesday: "We've had 3mm in the space of two hours this morning and I phoned our forecaster for an update they've told us there's possibly another 10mm to come by mid-afternoon.
"It's falling relentlessly and it just needs time. If it stops raining when they say it will and we get the time for the water to go, we'll be fine, but we're having an inspection just in case because more rain has fallen this morning than was forecast."
Asked if the meeting could be abandoned on Wednesday, Anderson added: "We'll let it go, but it needs time when it's not raining. As long as they're right and it stops raining when they're saying – 2pm/3pm this afternoon – then we'd almost have 24 hours before we race.
"It's mainly a dry forecast from then – the odd shower and nothing significant. There are no problem areas, but the rain is just falling far too quickly at the moment and it will become standing water very soon if this keeps up; it needs time to drain away."

Natavia, not seen since finishing last in the Investec Oaks, returns to action in the Join Club Godolphin Pride Stakes at Newmarket on Friday.
Owned by Khalid Abdullah, who won the Epsom Classic with the brilliant Enable, Natavia was quietly fancied having won a Newbury Listed race on just her second start.
The Roger Charlton-trained daughter of Nathaniel makes her comeback in a Listed race over 10 furlongs against the likes of Hugo Palmer's Architecture and Henry Candy's Chain Of Daisies.
"She needed plenty of time to get over Epsom," said Abdullah's racing manager, Teddy Grimthorpe. "Roger has brought her back steadily and she's entitled to be a bit rusty, I'd have thought.
"However, she has been doing things right at home and has been pleasing him.
"This will tell us an awful lot about which direction we go in next year, whether we carry on with her or not."

Bryan Cooper will seize the opportunity as owner Alan Potts' retained rider in Britain after partnering his first two rides under the new arrangement at Ludlow on Wednesday.
It was announced on Tuesday that Cooper would take the British role, with Robbie Power continuing to ride Potts' Irish-based runners as he has done since the end of last season.
Cooper will be riding for Colin Tizzard, who trains Finian's Oscar and Fox Norton among others for Potts, and supplied the rider with his first two mounts at the Shropshire venue.
Exxaro marked the first ride of the new partnership but he finished last in the Rowles Fine Art Handicap Chase, while Mick Thonic unshipped Cooper with a couple of fences to jump in the Vera Davies Memorial Chase.
Cooper said: "They said it was quite a tight track here, but I've seen tighter in Ireland - it's not as tight as Kilbeggan or Tramore.
"It's a great opportunity, they have some fantastic horses and I'm looking forward to it. We'll take it week by week, but there's a lot of exciting horses. I'm over for a couple of days now and we'll take it as it comes. I'm there (at Tizzard's yard) in the morning to get a feel of the place.
"I rode some fantastic horses for Gigginstown and I had probably the best four years of my career so far. I'm just grateful I can get on some more very good horses and to me it's all about the big days.
"I'll be based in Ireland, Ruby (Walsh) and Barry (Geraghty) did it for many years and I don't see why I can't do it. We'll give it a go and see how we get on. I had a good chat with Ruby and he said to enjoy it. I'm only 25 and it's exciting times."
Power partnered the Jessica Harrington-trained Sizing John to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory in March, with that victory prompting his initial link up with Potts.
While Cooper expects Power to again be in the driving seat on the reigning champion, he has not totally given up hope of getting the leg up come the big day at the Festival.
Cooper told Racing UK: "He's Jessie's rider and I'm Colin's rider, that's the way it stands unless he switches to Our Duke. If they both get there in March, he's got a fair choice to make. I know how he feels, so it's great times for him as well."
Bigmartre (13-8 favourite) landed the event Mick Thonic contested, making all to win by by three and a half lengths for trainer Harry Whittington and jockey Harry Bannister.
Whittington said: "That was fantastic. It's always a great relief to see them actually go and do it. You always hope they will be that slick and jump that well first time over fences as it bodes well for the future. He is good, he's a natural.
"We will probably stick to two miles for now, but I would have thought he would be at his peak over two and a half towards the end of the season.
"I think we'll probably go for the two-mile novice handicap chase at the Hennessy meeting."
Braquer D'Or (6-1 favourite) was an impressive winner of Exxaro's race for Paul Nicholls and Sam Twiston-Davies, while Ian Williams' The Statesman (4-7 favourite) was a 16-length victor in the Queen Elizabeth Humanities College Racing To School Juvenile Maiden Hurdle.
Evan Williams' Still Believing (9-2) came out on top in the mares' hurdle and Tizzard gained some compensation for the earlier defeats with the Harry Cobden-ridden Tempestatefloresco (4-9) in the two-mile-five-furlong novice hurdle.

A horse that pings out and looks overpriced is JARLATH. He comes off a 341-day layoff and latterly in his career has been campaigned over fences. To his credit he was on a really consistent run of form during the latter part of 2016 and you have to look a long way down his form to see when he last under-performed. He makes his comeback run over hurdles here and is rated lower in this sphere in comparison to his chase mark. Strictly from a handicapping perspective he is more than capable of being competitive in this contest and with him only being a six-year-old there is every chance his best is yet to come. It's more than likely he has suffered some kind of niggle or injury to be off for so long, and there's a chance this is a pipe-opener before he goes back chasing. However, on paper he is no 40/1 shot and on that reason alone he's worth a nibble. Recommended Bet

He stayed on to take second late on over 2m1f at Aintree, so the extended 2m2f trip at this stiff track could well be ideal, and a crucial factor for him looks to be better ground. Lavelle says he won’t be risked in the deep midwinter mud, so the theory is she’ll have him fit and raring to go for the first part of the season and conditions look to be largely ‘Good’ at Exeter at the time of writing, with only a bit of rain (3-5mm) forecast overnight.

![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/927a08fc-8948-496a-bf5b-d24b19c8252a.jpg) Sky Sports News HQ presenter Alex Hammond rises from her sick bed to cast her eye over the weekend's action but is she with or against Expert Eye in the Dewhurst? Roly Poly was yet another G1 winner for Aidan O’Brien and he’s closing in on Bobby Frankel’s world record now. When do you think he’ll do it and can the filly make a mark in the F&M at the Breeders’ Cup? It’s 23 and counting for the Ballydoyle maestro and whilst Group/Grade 1s don’t come easy, they come more easily to O’Brien than most thanks to the extraordinary firepower at his disposal. He’s been in a similar position before, but this time he looks to have a superb chance of equalling or even bettering the superb feat. There’s speculation he could reach the target on Champions Day at Ascot a week on Saturday and that looks the most likely scenario. He looks to have a strong hand in Friday’s Fillies’ Mile (more on that to follow), a tougher task in Saturday’s Dewhurst, but if he heads into Ascot on 24, then the likes of Churchill, Winter and Caravaggio have claims of being winner number 25. It would be superb for British racing for it to happen at Ascot, so fingers crossed. As for Roly Poly, readers of this blog will know I was delighted to see her win the Sun Chariot at Newmarket last weekend. She has got better and better this season and a trip to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup could be just the ticket. She’s currently an shot for the race with Sky Bet, which is quite attractive. The big news this week is that Enable stays in training. How good is that for the sport and what route would you take with her next year? I’ve never been more pleased to be proved wrong. Last week I was certain that she would be packed off to the paddocks via a date with a handsome chap, but her sporting owner Prince Khalid Abdullah has agreed to keep her in training as a four-year-old; high fives all round. After her magnificent triumph in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly, trainer John Gosden expressed his wish to try and win the race again on its return to Longchamp next October, so that will be her ultimate target. There are Group 1 races to be won along the way though and a race like the Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland could be a good starting point. Although the mile and a quarter trip might be a bit short, those closest to her wouldn’t expect that to be a problem. That considered, then the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot could be an option and there is the outside chance she could meet Aussie mighty mare Winx in that one. Then a step back up to her preferred trip of a mile and a half to try and retain her crown in the King George in July, followed by the Juddmonte International at York (10 furlongs), the race sponsored by her owner. Then the Arc again. She’s with Sky Bet to emulate Treve by winning a second Arc. A nice problem to have and I’m sure the plan is already in place. There are a variety of ’s website with my favourite, that she wins a Group 1 over a mile and a quarter in 2018. We’ve Group 1 action to look forward to on Friday in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Could this be number 24 for O’Brien? Where’s your money going? So, back to the Aidan O’Brien record breaking quest. Happily, Magical and September are the stable declarations and all have claims; he’s throwing plenty at this Group 1. Happily is the market leader after her win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere (Grand Criterium) on Arc day at Chantilly. She beat the boys that day and appreciated the step up to a mile having got up to beat Magical in the final strides of the 7 furlongs of the Moyglare Stud Stakes the time before. To be honest, this one looks O’Brien’s for the taking and it’s for me over the mile trip, although there’s not much between them. This one looks harder for O’Brien, but it’s not impossible. Expert Eye is the short priced favourite and the form looks good with his latest win in the Vintage Stakes being franked by the third James Garfield who has since won the Mill Reef. He’s unbeaten, sharp and in the very capable hands of Sir Michael Stoute. Having said that at he isn’t my sort of price and although he is the form horse, there could be some value in the field. He will need to achieve plenty in a short space of time, as his debut run came just over a month ago. Gosden wouldn’t be running here for the craic though and this impeccably bred juvenile looks a potential star. He is a son of Dubawi out of a Group 1 winning mare called Zee Zee Top and he cost an eye-watering 2.6m guineas as a yearling. The dam’s family continue to make waves at the yearling sales and this boy is bred to be pretty special. At with Sky Bet he looks more appealing from a punting perspective. 2 Magic Circle49 59-9OR: 97 Form: 3-55715T: R M BeckettJ: Callum Rodriguez (3) Last run And finally… . A nice easy one to finish! Give us a couple of each-way fancies for the big handicap please… I gave you an ante-post Autumn Double selection a few weeks ago and whilst Chelsea Lad didn’t win the first leg, the Cambridgeshire, he ran well to finish fourth, so I hope you backed the Autumn Double selection each-way! The second selection was for Ralph Beckett and I haven’t seen anything yet to change my mind. This horse had a good spell at York’s Ebor meeting in August, winning a 2 mile handicap on the Wednesday before running another good race to finish fifth in the Ebor on the Saturday. He is only carrying 1lb more than he did in the Ebor and the break since then should have freshened him up. He has some good form in top staying handicaps as his effort in the Chester Cup showed when he was beaten just 2 1/4 lengths into fifth off a 4lb lower mark. could be another to run into a place. He’s trained by Ian Williams who has booked James Doyle to ride again. Doyle was on board when the horse won two starts back, but it was Fran Berry in the saddle when he won the Northumberland Plate consolation race last time out. He’s only run seven times on the Flat and looks to still have more to offer in that sphere. He won the Imperial Cup over hurdles and thinks he has much more to come under both codes. The two picks are and respectively with Sky Bet, so a decent pay day if they can finish in the places. Don’t forget there is also some excellent jumping to look forward to this weekend too with some high quality horses making their seasonal debuts; I can’t wait. I wish you all a successful weekend and I hope I’ll have shaken off my bug by then and got my voice back to cheer some of these horses home.

![](https://www.sportinglife.com/images/news/900x506/d7b10bd3-d71e-4d3d-b8a4-78e226309f54.jpg) Jimmy Fortune, Winx v Enable, a 'free each-way bet' and much more besides are covered in this week's column by top broadcaster Mike Cattermole. JIMMY FORTUNE When Jimmy Fortune lost his wife Jan suddenly three years ago, his world must have been turned upside down. I imagine that you would never properly recover from something so tragic. Left with two young boys to bring up on his own, it must have put the way he regarded his vocation into some perspective. Now that he has hung up his boots and saddle I hope that Jimmy can take stock and look back proudly on a very successful career. Watching Jimmy in full flow in a finish was watching a force of nature. He looked irresistible as he propelled his mounts forward with that famous strength of his. And all in perfect harmony with the horse’s stride. Quiet, focused and very accomplished, no wonder he was respected by all of his peers in the weighing room. Jimmy had some great moments, no doubt, winning the 2007 St Leger on Lucarno being among them. He was also absolutely brilliant on Dar Re Mi when making all in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh in 2009, holding on by a finely judged short-head. He had reverses too, of course. The year before, he was enjoying a fine association with Raven’s Pass, having partnered him in all but one of his first 11 starts and so it must have been a real blow when John Gosden decided to replace him with Frankie Dettori ahead of a successful assault on the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Yet you never heard a word of complaint from Jimmy. He took it like a man. As he did when Gosden shocked the racing world by suddenly replacing him with William Buick as his stable jockey at the start of the 2010 season. It is a mark of his character that he should have chosen to go out by riding the Gosden-trained Nathra in last Saturday’s Sun Chariot Stakes, it being deemed appropriate for “a trainer who has done so much for me.” Over the past few years, his well-chronicled back problems have held him back, no question, so to achieve what he has done while being plagued with such a handicap really is quite remarkable. I wish him well. View image on Twitter View image on Twitter Follow Graham Clark @grahamclark85 Jockeys @newmarketrace give Jimmy Fortune a good send off after his last ever ride on Nathra 3:03 PM - Oct 7, 2017 Replies 1 1 Retweet 3 3 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy EXPERT EYE TO BE TESTED IN THE DEWHURST It has now been well over two months since we marvelled at the way Expert Eye landed the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, stamping himself as the most exciting juvenile we have seen this season with the way he travelled and then quickened. While he has been away, missing at least one engagement, that Goodwood form has been franked by the third Mildenberger winning a Listed race, the fourth James Garfield winning the Mill Reef Stakes and the fifth Seahenge landing the Champagne Stakes. That said, I am not sure he should be trading at odds-on for the Darley Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday, even if he should be favourite, and believe that Verbal Dexterity is going to give him something to think about. When landing the National Stakes at the Curragh, Verbal Dexterity looked a typically tough Jim Bolger two-year-old, one who relished a scrap and keeps on galloping. Sure, he probably beat a non-stayer in Beckford last time but it was the trainer’s post-race reaction that made an impression. Bolger puts Verbal Dexterity in the same class as his previous five Dewhurst winners and that famous five includes Teofilo, New Approach and Dawn Approach. You have to take notice. Verbal Dexterity is trading at around and that is almost a free each-way bet. That all said, I can’t wait to see what happens when Andrea Atzeni presses the button on Expert Eye as they approach the Dip. 14 Verbal Dexterity34 29-1OR: 110D Form: 121T: J S BolgerJ: Last run WINX IS AMAZING BUT MEETING ENABLE LOOKS UNLIKELY - OR IS IT? They certainly don’t wrap them up in cotton wool Down Under, do they? Winx was making her fourth appearance in two months when landing the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington in the early hours of Saturday morning. It was her 14th win at the highest level and puts her alongside Goldikova. She is clearly one very special racing machine who is leagues above her rivals. Interestingly, the runner-up in Melbourne on Saturday was Ventura Storm who you may recall finishing second to Harbour Law in last year’s St Leger for Richard Hannon. Now it’s onto the at Moonee Valley later in the month in a bid to emulate Kingston Town as a three-time winner of the race. Moonee Valley is a left-handed track, just like Flemington, and I got the impression that she looked far more comfortable going that way round than she had at Randwick recently. Connections are expected to be bombarded with suggestions of international challenges should she do what she is expected to do on October 21, with several British racecourse representatives there in numbers. Personally speaking, I don’t think she needs to leave her homeland to prove anything but if her sporting connections could be tempted to come over here then they might think that a race such as the Juddmonte at York, run over her type of trip and on a left-handed track, might just suit given its timing in the Australian season. There is no chance she will step up to a mile and half, the trip that Enable excels at. But the chances are high that Enable could drop down in trip next season, so the Juddmonte could well be part of her campaign as she heads for Longchamp. Imagine that! SALES PRICES NEVER STOP AMAZING ME Just like the Premier League in football, the prices at the top yearling sales blatantly defy modern economics. Some of the figures reached at last week’s Tattersalls Book One Sale would have been incomprehensible to the man on the street. There were 349 yearlings sold last week at an aggregate of £102,290,000 compared to 386 sold the previous year at an aggregate of £88,038,000. All very good news for Tattersalls. The Galileo filly out of the double Group One-winning Dank went for 4 million guineas, making her the highest price for a yearling anywhere in the world this year and the second-highest filly yearling ever sold at auction. John Gosden bought her on behalf of Godolphin and rightly pointed out that the fillies have options on the track and in the breeding sheds. That’s not always the case for the colts who don’t do it on the track. The history of yearling sales are littered with incredible bargain buys and total wastes of money. Members of the latter group are sometimes celebrated more. You may recall The Green Monkey who cost $16m as a two-year-old in a breeze-up sale at Calder in 2006. The price was driven up by a straight rivalry between Coolmore, the eventual purchasers, and Sheikh Mohammed. The Green Monkey went on to race just three times and won nothing. He did manage to find a place at stud, though, and stands in Florida for just $5,000. Some might say that wasn’t a bad result in the circumstances but certainly not part of the plan. There were a lot of very wealthy people at Newmarket last week and you do wonder how much of the bidding is driven by power, pride and ego. Does the interpretation of “value for money” get blurred by all that? I would think quite often and almost certainly in The Green Monkey’s case. I attended a sale recently – at Sotheby’s where 300-odd lots once owned by the actress Vivien Leigh were being sold off. My wife Monica being from Atlanta, Georgia, may explain the interest (Scarlett O’Hara etc). One of the lots was a dishevelled old blonde wig that Miss Leigh wore in her Oscar-winning role as Blanche Dubois in “A Streetcar Named Desire”. It went for £5,000. Frankly my dear….I was staggered.

BANKER
Wax And Wane (2.00 Ayr)
This looks to revolve around the three previous scorers and Wax And Wane can come out on top and follow up his recent Carlisle success. That victory came over this trip on heavy ground and with conditions likely to be similar here, he should take a lot of beating. On ratings Soldier's Minute looks a relative shoe-in, but Wax And Wane is almost certainly still improving and the way he quickened up when asked last time out was quite impressive.
15/8 Wax And Wane 2:00 Ayr EYECATCHER
Valley Of Light (7.45 Chelmsford)
Well-supported 5-6 favourite on debut and finished a disappointing third of 12, beaten ten lengths. However that doesn't tell the whole story as the daughter of Dubawi broke slowly, was keen early and raced without cover for much of the journey. Oisin Murphy, who maintains the ride, came extremely wide on Charlie Appleby's juvenile round the final bend and was never in a position to challenge. With that experience under her belt, she should be able to reverse the form with Pretty Passe (who beat her by four lengths that day) and get off the mark at the second attempt.
9/4 Valley Of Light 7:45 Chelmsford (AW) DARK HORSE
Golden Jeffrey (4.40 Ayr)
Mixboy will be fancied by many and I wouldn't put you off him aside from his likely starting price. I'd imagine Joe Fanning will make his intentions clear from the outset and will hope to grind his rivals into submission. However, Golden Jeffrey could be the joker in the pack and coming here on the back of two hurdles victories, he's clearly in fine fettle. Dropped 1lb since his last exploit on the Flat, when fourth over course and distance, he's capable of scoring off this mark and looks a nice bet at around 4-1.

Newmarket: David Milnes
Boynton (7.15 Chelmsford, nap)
This three-year-old is expected to make up for lost time after missing over a year with injury. Charlie Appleby's chestnut has been going well at Moulton Paddocks and can account for some exposed types.
Others to follow Chelmsford 5.45 One For June, 6.15 Pretty Baby, 6.45 Morlock, 7.45 Valley Of Fire, 8.15 Kohinoor Diamond, 8.45 California Cliffs, 9.15 Starshell.

Kings Ryde (4.30 Worcester, nap)
Scopey five-year-old struck in fine style at Southwell last month and the step up in trip should suit.
Others to follow Exeter 2.45 Good Man Pat, 3.15 Hoke Colburn, 4.50 Minella Treasure. Worcester 1.50 Casablanca Mix, 5.30 Stonemadforspeed.
5/6 Kings Ryde 4:30 Worcester North: Richard Young
Golden Jeffrey (4.40 Ayr, nap)
Flat winner who wasn't disgraced over course and distance in a race that worked out well on his last start in this sphere and has since won both starts over hurdles. Ground is in his favour for return to the Flat and he is expected to go very close.
Others to follow Ayr 2.00 Wax And Wane, 2.30 Daleelak, 3.05 Someone Exciting, 3.35 Prying Pandora, 4.05 Druid's Diamond, 5.10 She's Pukka. Chelmsford 5.45 Smugglers Top, 6.45 Rua Augusta, 8.15 Bob's Boy, 8.45 Hellomoto, 9.15 Nepeta.

5/2 Ingleby Angel 2:30 Ayr Topspeed: Dave Edwards
Cliff Bay (5.10 Ayr)
Escapes a penalty for last week's course success and Keith Dalgleish's three-year-old can complete a quick double.

Seamus Mullins and Kevin Jones have a 33 per cent strike-rate when teaming up at Worcester. They do so with hat-trick-seeker Arthington (3.55).
Robert Havlin has just the one ride today, which comes in the shape of Main Street (6.45) at Chelmsford for his principal employer John Gosden. The horse can build on his last start at Newmarket.
Alan King is in very good form at present, operating at a 43 per cent strike-rate in the last two weeks. He also has a good record when running his horses in a handicap for the first time, and his Hidden Cargo could be one to watch at Exeter (3.15).
