STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
9 Sat 19 July - Fri 25 July 2014 SATURDAY 6 CLUB Although Slade Power (5/2) was our only winning selection in this column, we knocked on the door with a few of our other selections, with Milly's Gift, Absolutely So and G Force all finishing sec- ond. Hopefully, the stats can help us to realise a few more winning selections this Saturday, with Channel 4 showing the racing from Market Rasen (2.55 and 3.30), Newbury (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.50) and Newmarket (1.50 and 2.25). With Jumps action at Market Rasen to look for- ward to, a quick glance at the form jockeys and trainers might prove helpful. Tony McCoy is the most-winning Jump jockey in the past 14 days, with 7 wins to next-best Tom Scudamore's 6, ahead of Richard Johnson's 5. In terms of trainers, Gordon Elliott's 8 wins and 26% strike rate put him clear of Donald McCain ( 4 wins and 21%). On the Flat, the top jockeys of the past week (to Monday, 14 July) were Joe Fanning, Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes, who each rode 9 winners, with Fanning and Moore tying by strike rate (32% each.) The leading jockeys by strike rate were Louis Steward (44%) and Freddie Tylicki (33%). At Market Rasen, the 2.55 is a Listed handicap hurdle over 2m 1f. Jockey Dennis O'Regan has won this race 3 times in the past 4 years, riding for different trainers, so keep an eye out for his mount. Trainers Nicky Henderson and John Ferguson have excellent general strike rates at the course (34% and 31%), with Ferguson boast- ing the best current form of the pair (33%) and having a potentially well-handicapped pair of entrants, including Honour System, whose su- perior strike rates over distance and going give him the edge. Alan King's team are also in great form (40%) and the return to better ground may help Montbazon's cause, who is a classy horse on his day. In the 3.30, the 2m 6f Listed handi- cap chase, Grandads Horse could go well for trainer Charlie Longsdon, who has a great record around the course (29% past five seasons) allied to a current form strike rate of 25%. Grandads Horse goes well on the expected ground and has previously won at this course. Another stable with a good record at this course is Jonjo O'Neill, and he has several options in this race, with The Nephew potentially the most promising, thanks to a progressive profile and winning form over course, distance and going. At Newbury, the fillies' handicap at 2.05 looks a good opportunity for either of Willie Haggas's entrants, Etaab and Token Of Love, with both heading the right way. Haggas's runners have won 32% of their races in the past 14 days. The return to quicker going may also help Sir Michael Stoute's Provenance, who won over distance on her debut and hails from a yard that has won this race twice in the past. In the 2.40, a Listed race over 1m 2f, French trainer Andre Fabre's Triple Threat, a multiple Group race winner, is interest- ing dropped in class and is 2 from 5 over distance. Roger Charlton's team have been going great guns and Al Kazeem, a triple Group 1 winner last year, who has returned to training after an abortive period at stud, would find this race a ‘penalty kick’ on his old form. The stable is currently firing on all cylinders, with a 27% strike rate in the past 14 days. Among Newmarket's two Channel 4-televised races is the Listed Aphrodite Stakes at 2.25, in which the John Gosden-trained Criteria looks to have a good opportunity at the weights, has won over distance and the stable has won more races than any other with entrants in this race. The highly-tried Tasaday is dropping in class for this race and her trainer, Saeed Bin Suroor, has a good long term strike rate at the course of 22%. =========================================
Race Ratings Saturday, 19 July - 2.25 Newmarket Newsells Park Stud Stakes (Reg. As The Aphrodite Stakes) (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (Cl.1) 1m4f (3yo+)
2398-1 Alwilda 15 4 Sir Mark Prescott (Baronet) Stable just getting going, but this daughter of Hernando has already won this month, off a career-high mark in a 1m 6f handicap at Sandown on her seasonal debut. Could be more to come, but would probably prefer ground to dry beyond the expected good-soft. RATING 94 4-1110 Anipa 43 3 Roger Varian Daughter of Sea The Stars whose sequence of three wins was ended when finishing down the field at 33/1 in The Oaks. Arguably didn't han- dle the track and was probably outclassed, too. This looks an easier race, but form of her Listed win at Chester hasn't really worked out, so needs to show more. RATING 95 21-467 Astonishing 14 4 Sir Michael Stoute Stable won this race last year and connections may be keeping their fingers crossed for some sunny weather, as this Galileo filly has yet to show her best this season, having perhaps struggled on softish ground. Last season's form was promising, with steady improvement in handicaps culminating in a Listed win over course and distance in September. Respected, but drying ground would help. RATING 98 13- Dame Lucy 266 4 Michael Paul Murphy Formerly with Jessica Harrington, this daugh- ter of Refuse To Bend ran twice over 12f last season, winning a maiden on her debut, and was third in a handicap next time. Form of both races is fairly ordinary in the context of this race, so, although unexposed, she is not an obvious candidate for outright honours here. RATING 89 241606 Flemish School 15 4 David Elsworth Won a handicap over distance at Windsor two months ago, but was soundly beaten into last place in a Listed race at Sandown last time and has a lot to prove at this level. RATING 90 1-1285 Groovejet 37 3 Peter Chapple-Hyam Not disgraced when fifth of nine runners over 10f in a Listed fillies' race at Newbury last time, but more needed here, even allowing for the fact that the extra distance may suit. RATING 93 14 Kallisha 70 3 Ralph Beckett One of the least-exposed horses in the race, having won her maiden and then headed straight for the Oaks Trial at Lingfield, where she was only beaten two lengths by the win- ner, with Criteria in second. Yard has a good record with its three-year-old fillies and she could go well at a price. RATING 96 1-599 Khione 49 5 Luca Cumani Fair filly whose finest hour came when winning a Listed race over distance at Goodwood in spring 2013. Handles a variety of surfaces, but probably acts best on good ground. Hasn't really fired on two latest starts, having been a good fifth on her seasonal debut in a Group 3 over distance. Not ruled out for place pur- poses, but still has a bit to prove. RATING 95 48-512 Lustrous 30 3 Richard Hannon Stable having great season and went close having come from a long way back in the Group 2 Ribblesdale last time, finishing ahead of Criteria in the process. That was her first run over distance, having won an 8f Listed, race on her previous start and could be more to come, particularly as she is by Champs Elyssee, out of a Hernando mare, so plenty of stamina. RATING 99 3-121 Melrose Abbey 21 3 Ralph Beckett A full-sister to the stable's Oaks hope of a few years ago, Ceilidh House, who found her niche in Listed races, Melrose Abbey has marked herself out as one on the upgrade, winning a handicap over distance on soft ground, off her highest handicap mark to date. Was staying- on at the close that day, and deserves a crack at some Black Type in this race. RATING 95 748864 Moment In Time 7 5 David Simcock Probably has the best form of any here, having been Group 1-placed last season, and won a Group 3 over distance. Despite that, results this season have been a little lacklustre by comparison, although fourth, beaten just over a length, in a Listed handicap at York last Sat- urday was respectable. RATING 98 62-512 Noble Protector 77 4 Stuart Kittow Picked up Black Type last time when second in a Listed race at Goodwood, which is this daugh- ter of Haafhd's best result to date. Form of that race has worked out reasonably well, and may be one for each-way backers. RATING 97 1-153 Queen Of Ice 37 3 William Haggas Stable has been in fine form of late, with this lightly-raced daughter of Selkirk too keen for her own good in the Musidora, but improved slightly to place third in a Listed race over 10f at Newbury last time. Pedigree suggests step up in trip is not infeasible and could offer fur- ther scope for improvement. RATING 96 1164-2 Regal Hawk 22 4 James Tate Ran well last time out, when second on her seasonal debut in a Listed fillies' race at Newcastle. However, it was unlikely that the Newcastle race was as strong as this one, and she has something to find with Astonishing when fourth behind that horse in a Listed fil- lies' race over distance at the neighbouring Rowley Mile track. RATING 96 345-05 Rock Choir 33 4 William Haggas Daughter of Pivotal whose best form to date suggests a preference for good or quicker going. Improved on her second start this season to be beaten only two lengths by the winner - last season's Oaks runner-up, Secret Gesture - when a staying-on fifth in a Listed race over 10f at Nottingham last month. Interesting. RATING 97 3-3155 Special Meaning 49 4 Mark Johnston Listed win in May hasn't quite provided a win- ning springboard into Pattern races for this filly, but she hasn't been disgraced in two starts in Group 3s, and the drop in class may help her cause, although this does look a decent race for the grade. RATING 97 311- Speckled 261 4 Charlie Appleby Sharply progressive daughter of Street Cry who won a Listed race over 1m 5f at Lingfield at the end of last season. Unraced since then, so open to improvement but may just lack the vital sharpness to get involved at this level. RATING 95 32-919 Tasaday 112 4 Saeed bin Suroor Formerly with Andre Fabre, for whom she fin- ished third to Treve in the Prix Vermeille last September, Tasaday switched stables in time for a campaign in Dubai earlier this year, where she won a Listed race over 10f from three starts. Past form suggests she could be the one to beat, but stable's runners usually need a run on their return to racing in the UK. Rating 98 17-466 Uchenna 37 3 David Simcock Has something to find with Groovejet and Queen Of Ice when behind those horses in a Listed race at Newbury last month. Better ground than expected would probably help, but needs to improve to be considered on the same level as a few of these. RATING 94 5-3123 Criteria 30 3 John Gosden Stable has saddled the winner of this race twice in the last 10 years, and this improving Galileo filly has fair claims in this company thanks to her Group 2-third in the Ribblesdale last time. Was beaten by Lustrous (second) in that race, if only by a head, and that form entitles her to be on the premises. RATING 100

RACING NEWS.
Vintage Crop, who became the first Euro- pean-trained horse to win the Melbourne Cup in 1993, has died at the age of 27. The Dermot Weld-trained son of Rousillon won 16 races from 28 starts, including the Ce- sarewitch and the Irish St Leger twice, and he was also third in the 1995 Melbourne Cup, after which he was retired. He spent his retirement at the Irish National Stud. Testing ground at Longchamp's Grand Prix de Paris meeting marred the performance of The Grey Gatsby in the feature race. The win- ner of the Dante Stakes and French Derby earlier this season, The Grey Gatsby never looked happy on the ground and finished sixth behind the winning outsider, Gallante. The Grey Gatsby's trainer, Kevin Ryan, con- firmed that the three-year-old would not be running on the ground again, but felt that the 1m 4f race distance was fine. Trainer Richard Hannon said he considers Estidhkaar a 2,000 Guineas horse after the two-year-old romped home in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last weekend, winning by more than four lengths. A run in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes is a possible option for Estidhkaar's next start, according to Hannon, whose father trained the winner of that race for the last four years running. Farraaj may return to Group races after win- ning York's John Smith's Cup last Saturday in impressive fashion. The five-year-old son of Dubai Destination won the Group 3 Winter Derby last season, and had been placed in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf pre- viously. His trainer, Roger Varian, is report- edly considering the Group 2 York Stakes, later this month, as a possible target. Popular Flat filly The Fugue has been re- tired after picking up an injury in the Coral- Eclipse Stakes at Sandown earlier this month. The John Gosden-trained daughter of Dansili won four Group 1 races in total, including the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot this year, in which she broke the track record. She will now be retired to the paddocks at the Watership Down Stud which belongs to her owners, Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber. Trainer Edward Lynam acclaimed his sprinter Slade Power as the best in Europe following the five-year-old's win in the July Cup at New- market last weekend. It is reported that Slade Power will be retired at the end of this year, with a possible run in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock on the cards before what's likely to be his last race, the $1m (AUS) VRS Sprint Classic at Flemington race- course on 8 November, after which he will be retired to stud with Darley. Sir Michael Stoute's ace three-year-old filly Integral maintained her upward curve at Newmarket's July meeting when winning the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes from the win- ner of last month's Coronation Stakes, Rizeena. Integral came to the race on the back of a fine victory in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes and won by two lengths on this latest start, with connec- tions reportedly considering a step up to 1m 2f for her next possible start, the Nas- sau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. In the USA, veteran jockey Gary Stevens has insisted he is not retiring again, but is instead taking a six-month break to allow a surgical replacement of his right knee. Stevens has won more than 5,000 races in his career, and had previously retired, but returned to action last year, warranting his comeback with two winning rides at the Breeders' Cup meeting. =======================================

After a few earlier rides at Newmarket Ryan Moore will be jetting off to the Curragh for the Irish Oaks and here the Betfair Ambassador talks exclusively about the race, including his own ride on Marvellous...
With easy Oaks winner Taghrooda sidestepping this race in favour of the King George next week, this suddenly gets a lot more winnable and the most obvious beneficiaries are the placed horses at Epsom, Tarfasha and Volume.
But Aidan has a pretty strong hand in here with five runners, and they are hopefully headed by my mount Marvellous.
She was a touch disappointing when beaten nine lengths into sixth at Epsom, but I don't think that should have been such a surprise.
Because, even though she won the Irish 1,000 Guineas by a convincing three lengths for me at The Curragh less than a fortnight earlier, she had a pretty hard race that day and the question mark was always going to be if the Oaks came too soon after that victory.
She will be a fresher horse today, and has a decent chance, as I think that she should stay the 1m4f ok, being a Galileo. She did take a fair bit of rousing to win at the Curragh, so presumably Aidan thinks she ran a bit lazily at Epsom too and that first-time blinkers will wake her up.
But she obviously wouldn't want the ground too fast - it was very testing at the Curragh - so any rain would be a big bonus.
Coronation Stakes sixth, and Joseph's mount, Tapestry should appreciate the step up in trip, and she wouldn't be inconvenienced by fast ground, having run a good race on it in the Moyglare last season. I can see her going well.
Oaks seventh Palace also has an outside place chance if seeing out the trip better today - I rode her at Epsom and felt she didn't quite get home - and you have to say that Aidan has another big player in Bracelet.
Ok, she will have to step up a fair bit on her ½ length defeat of Lustrous in the Ribblesdale to trouble the form horses, but she was obviously well suited to the 1m4f trip at Ascot and there could be a lot more to come from her.
But, as you can gather, it's a competitive race with Taghrooda out, and several will be fancying their chances now.

Haydock Park, 18 July 2014
4.55, sixth race
The Stewards interviewed Mr Alan Jarvis concerning his involvement with FRENCH FLIRT, trained by Timothy Jarvis which ran in this race. They ordered a report to be forwarded to the British Horseracing Authority.
18/07/2014
Nottingham, 18 July 2014
1.50, first race
The Starter reported that GIN TRAP (USA), trained by Olly Stevens, was unruly in the stalls and withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and he was informed that the colt could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
2.20, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, ALPINE AFFAIR, ridden by Martin Lane and trained by Brian Meehan, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative, who stated that the colt appeared to benefit from the application of blinkers and was probably suited by the good to firm ground. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of ALPINE AFFAIR could be reviewed.
The Stewards noted that LADY ZODIAC (IRE), placed second, had interfered with VERCHILD LAD (IRE), unplaced, shortly after leaving the stalls but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved LADY ZODIAC (IRE)’s placing.
2.55, third race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, INCITING INCIDENT (IRE), ridden by Robert Winston and trained by Ed McMahon, compared with its previous run at Newcastle on 27 June 2014 where the gelding finished seventh of eight, beaten by approximately 4½ lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that INCITING INCIDENT (IRE) appreciated front-running tactics and a change of headgear on this occasion. They ordered INCITING INCIDENT (IRE) to be routine tested.
3.30, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the start involving the winner, TAURUS TWINS, ridden by Robert Winston, and INXILE (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Adrian Nicholls. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they were satisfied that no interference had taken place.
The Stewards noted that RANDOM SUCCESS (IRE) had suffered interference from both GLADIATRIX, unplaced, and FOREST EDGE (IRE), placed third, leaving the stalls but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved FOREST EDGE (IRE)’s placing.
18/07/2014
Hamilton Park, 18 July 2014
6.40, second race
Tom Eaves, who was declared to ride SIR ACCLAM (IRE) had failed to arrive in time to weigh out. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £140. Permission was given for James Sullivan to be substituted.
Paul Mulrennan, who was declared to ride A LOVABLE ROGUE, had failed to arrive in time to weigh out. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £140. Permission was given for Neil Farley to be substituted.
7.40, fourth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Amy Ryan, the rider of the winner, BLAINE, from two furlongs out. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she had used her whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Ryan for 4 days as follows: Friday 1, Sunday 3, Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 August 2014.
18/07/2014
Newmarket, 18 July 2014
6.50, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that PENNINE WARRIOR, unplaced, ridden by Matthew Hopkins, had interfered with MAWFOOR (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Paul Hanagan. The Stewards found Hopkins in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift right moving MAWFOOR (IRE) off his intended line. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
18/07/2014
Pontefract, 18 July 2014
7.00, second race
The Stewards noted that the winner, HOOP OF COLOUR (USA), had interfered with BAYAN KASIRGA (IRE), unplaced, approximately two furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved HOOP OF COLOUR (USA)’s placing.

Richard Hughes feels Toronado’s tactical versatility could be the key to success when he goes head-to-head with Kingman in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Toronado: Tactically versatile which will help at Goodwood Richard Hannon’s charge got the better of Dawn Approach in last year’s Duel On The Downs and now has to see off John Gosden’s brilliant Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner to keep the crown. Glorious Goodwood Tickets See the world's greatest horses and jockeys strive for top honours at this iconic five-day Festival meeting. The jockey told Racing UK: “Toronado’s a good, hardy horse and he looks a million dollars. All his work has been great. We have to give 8lb to one of the best milers we’ve seen for a while though. “Mine is a very strong, versatile horse who can make the running if needed. That will stand him in good stead around Goodwood, it could be a small field and tactical. I wouldn’t swap him anyway. “It’s going to be hard to beat Kingman, I’m under no illusions but there are no chinks in our armour and he’s a tougher horse this year than last year. “I tried not to get into a battle with him last year, if I was going to win I was going to win quick, but this year is different.”

Views from connections ahead of Saturday's Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh, including Dermot Weld on Tarfasha. Tarfasha: Aims to go one better than at Epsom Dermot Weld feels being on home soil gives Tarfasha a favourite's chance in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday. The Investec Oaks runner-up heads the market for Classic glory after owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum decided not to run Epsom heroine Taghrooda and save her for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Weld will have been heartened by the prospect of little further rain ahead of the big race. "She's very well, she's in good form and hopefully we won't get too much rain. If we get a lot of rain then we'll review it and see. That would suit Vote Often," the Rosewell handler told At The Races. "She's on home territory, she's the one, but the other filly (Volume) that was third at Epsom, there is very little between them." Tarfasha's jockey Pat Smullen is also expecting her to take the beating if conditions are in her favour. "We're very happy with her. I hope we don't get too much rain. If it's nice ground she's there with every chance," he said. Sheikh Hamdan's racing manager Angus Gold is optimistic Tarfasha can take full advantage of the opportunity to join Taghrooda as a Classic-winning filly for their owner. "Tarfasha is in good form, she ran a fantastic race in the Oaks and Sheikh Hamdan felt she deserved the opportunity to win an Oaks herself," he said. "It would be very special to have two Oaks winners heading to stud. It's special having one Oaks winner, but to have two would be amazing - it would be fantastic for him and the stud. "She would much prefer fast ground so hopefully they don't get much (rain). "Pat (Smullen) felt at Epsom she got the mile and a half, but that's as far as she would want to be going." Wayne Lordan gets the leg up on Weld's apparent second string Vote Often, who was last seen finishing third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Lustrous appeared to take the step up to a mile and a half in her stride when she ran Bracelet close in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. Her trainer Richard Hannon is looking for another bold show when she renews rivalry with Aidan O'Brien's filly. "Taghrooda's absence has made it a bit more open, but it still looks tough," the Marlborough handler told www.richardhannonracing.co.uk. "We dipped our toes in the water at a mile and a half in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and she ran a blinder to be beaten only half a length by Bracelet. "Whether we can reverse the placings on her home patch remains to be seen, but I don't see why we should be three times the price." Check out the latest Irish Oaks odds right here! Pat Shanahan saddles a rank outsider in the shape of Maid Of The Glens, who takes a big hike in class after losing her maiden tag at Hamilton last time. "She's a nice filly. She seems to have come on a lot for her maiden win at Hamilton," said the County Kilkenny trainer. "She's working well and I'm expecting a decent run. I think she'll appreciate going a bit further up to a mile and a half." Volume attempts to go two places better than at Epsom and on that running there is nothing between her and Tarfasha. Trainer Luca Cumani reports everything to have gone well since that race and he has taken to local knowledge by acquiring the services of top Irish rider Kevin Manning, who took the honours on Margarula in 2002. He is available because his boss Jim Bolger has no runner this year. "We're very happy with her. She's worked well and her preparation for the Irish Oaks has gone according to plan," said Cumani. "Obviously she was just behind Tarfasha at Epsom so we're hopeful of a good run." Ballybacka Queen has yet to race beyond a mile and was unplaced behind Marvellous in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on her latest start. However, her trainer Pat Fahy believes the daughter of Hurricane Run will appreciate the step up in trip. "She seems to be going well and is happy in herself so we're happy to go tomorrow," said the County Carlow handler. "We really think the trip will suit her. She stayed well as a two-year-old even then, so it shouldn't be a problem. "It will be nice if we get the rain that's promised, as long as there's no jar in the ground."

iews from connections ahead of Saturday's Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury. Tiggy Wiggy: A "class act" according to her trainer Richard Fahey has a slight worry that Weatherbys Super Sprint favourite Realtra may not be quite quick enough as the filly drops back down to the minimum distance at Newbury. Realtra appears to be Fahey's best chance of landing back-to-back wins in the £250,000 sales race, where weight carried is determined by the price fetched at the sales. The Malton handler runs five in his bid to win it again and Realtra, who runs off bottom weight of just 8st having cost only 10,000 euro, finished second to the unbeaten Beach Belle in a Listed race in Ireland when last seen, but that was over six furlongs. Fahey said: "Realtra is a smart filly and she must have a chance off just 8st. I'd just be worried whether she's quick enough over five furlongs, that's my only worry with her. She's been saved for this, though. "Diamond Creek ran quite well at Newmarket last week (in the Duchess of Cambridge) but she just didn't quite get home over six. Dropping back in trip will suit her. "Bond's Girl won her first two well and I thought she ran better than her finishing position suggests in the Albany at Ascot. She's got no weight and would have a chance. "Tachophobia won over six last time so coming back in trip would be a worry for him. The owners won the race last year (with Peniaphobia) so they were keen to have a go and he's improving. "Spirit Of Zeb is a maiden and I'm surprised he got in. There's money down to tenth so once they have the entry you may as well run. He's quite a nice horse and I like him. "I wouldn't like to say which has the best chance. Realtra has a nice weight but she'd be better off over six." Richard Hannon, whose father won the race seven times, also has five representatives. The obvious first string is Queen Mary runner-up Tiggy Wiggy. "You need a lot of luck as they usually split into two or three groups, but this has always been the target for Tiggy Wiggy and if she can reproduce the form she showed when second in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot she must have a big shout," said Hannon on www.richardhannonracing.co.uk. "She is a class act, but we have a 5lb penalty for winning the National Stakes at Sandown, and, while she was fine on the fast ground at Ascot, I would not mind if the forecast showers materialised. "However, on ratings Parsley comes out 2lb in front. Whereas Tiggy Wiggy cost 41,000, Parsley was only 17,000, so she receives 13lb from a filly who is only rated 11lb superior. Parsley found the ground a bit soft at Newmarket last time, but she had previously run a cracker when second in the Empress, and at the weights you have to give her serious consideration. "Our others are up against it strictly on ratings, but the prize money is such that you have to give it a go. Be Bold (85), who is very reminiscent of his grandfather, Assertive, was beaten at Bath last week and could probably do with the rain arriving, while Flyball (78), who found the company a bit hot in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, and L'Etacq, who broke his maiden on the all-weather at Lingfield, are both sharp types who will hopefully hang on for a slice of the cake." Flyball is owned, like the Fahey duo Realtra and Diamond Creek, by Middleham Park Racing and their racing manager Tim Palin added: "We always saw him (Flyball) as a Super Sprint type and at the start of the season if you'd told me he could run in it off 8st 4lb I'd have really fancied his chances. "He was third in the Brocklesby on his debut and then won a bonus maiden and after that I fancied him strongly for this. "Since then the wheels have fallen off somewhat. He may have been a little out of his depth in the Windsor Castle but he ran no sort of a race. "This is a better race for him but I am worried about his lack of recent form. Hannon snr thinks he wants further and he's probably right." Clive Cox has a couple of runners and whatever the weather does he appears to have his bases covered. "Secret Spirit has shown plenty of speed which is why we are happy enough to drop her down to five furlongs for this," he said. "They are forecast to get some heavy showers and as we know she stays further that would suit her. "She's only got 8st 6lb to carry and that encouraged us to have a go. "In contrast, the rain would not be welcome for Brazen Spirit. "He's had four runs and not managed to win yet, but he will have more experience than most for a race like this. "He's shown ability over five, but we know he stays further which I think you'll have to do in a strongly-run race like this. He just wouldn't want any rain." Charlie Hills' Magical Memory was second to Ivawood in a Sandown maiden and then won at Leicester. He represents the Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds syndicate who won this with Charles The Great in 2011. Roger Varian calls on Haxby, who ran well at Royal Ascot when fifth in the Windsor Castle, and the Newmarket handler told his website: "This has been a long-term plan for Haxby. He looks great and has been working well. "His form is good and I think he will run very well." Kevin Ryan runs Captain Colby and Fast Act, the mount of Jamie Spencer, while William Haggas sends out Pillar Box.

======================================= 15:50 Saturday 19th July Racing Tips - 19/07/2014
The Newmarket opener is a decent betting heat and much will depend on the weather. I'm banking on there being a little cut in the ground. That will suit Llanarmon Lad at 5/1 who is progressive and should appreciate this strongly run mile. Plenty are likely to go forward and some cut will make it a decent test. He's up 6lb from his last win but has Cam Hardie taking off a bit of weight and that's a useful claim. Music Theory will be at threat if the ground remains good and Tanseeb could be ahead of his mark too but fancy he should be bigger than the selection. Busatto would get the nod at a price but he'll have company for the lead. Newmarket 13.50 - Llanarmon Lad 2pt win
Criteria is very tempting in the Listed race at Newmarket but, if Criteria is tempting, them Kallisha is a must bet at nearly 3 times the price. She is unexposed and didn't get the clearest of runs behind Criteria (2 lengths) at Lingfield. She looks as though the extra furlong will suit and 10/1 is too big. 3 year olds have a good record in the race and it's easy to see why given a 12lb allowance. That worries me for Speckled and Astonishing who look best of the rest. If it rains, Kallisha's chances will only be further enhanced. Newmarket 14.25 - Kallisha 1pt e/w
Charlie Appleby has some way to go before he can be considered a smart trainer but he's building a reputation and I like the chances of Vancouverite at Newbury. Both he and Triple Threat have similar profiles but I'd just have the Godolphin horse a point shorter in the betting so 11/2 is worth taking. Al Kazeem goes fresh but going off to stud is a different ball game and he may need this. The forecast isn't ideal either. Vancouverite is a Group 2 winner on good ground at this trip in a fast time and he clocked another good time at Meydan in Group 1 company. That may well be good enough to win this and blinkers could just sharpen him up a little on return as he doesn't want to get too far back, as is sometimes the case. Newbury 14.40 - Vancouverite 2pt win
The Summer Plate could be ruined by the weather as Market Rasen is sure to have endured a downpour. That could dent the chances of Creevytennant as his trainer maintains he wants decent ground, though he did win on soft last time. I'll take a chance at 12/1 as he is probably still well treated and has a nice profile for this. He will certainly get the trip and so some company up top will be no bad thing. I can't split he and Superior Quality for a yard going along nicely this summer. The horse is better than his mark but doesn't often show it. If his fall last time hasn't dented his confidence, he can outrun his 14/1 odds. Market Rasen 15.30 - Creevytennant 1pt e/w Market Rasen 15.30 - Superior Quality 1pt e/w
I've narrowed the shortlist for the Super Sprint down to 3 and Harry's Dancer will probably win as she just misses out on going up. She is 8/1 and that's not really big enough for the race given the amount of unknown quantities on show, though her form and weight make for appealing reading. First up is Eastern Racer at 50/1 who is completely unexposed and has run green on both starts. Last time at Chester he flew from the rear once working it all out and is quick enough for this. I like that he's drawn high, where there is plenty of pace, and has a rail nearby. He should win a race this year given his breeding and, while it will likely be a nursery, he's worth a go in this. Magical Memory is the other worthy of support at 22/1 for a yard whose 2 year olds improve dramatically with racing. His Ivawood form is rock solid and he only just won over 6 last time but looked as though a strongly run 5 would ideally suit. Newbury 15.50 - Eastern Racer 0.5pt e/w Newbury 15.50 - Magical Memory 1pt e/w

Bay bounds clear for Summer spoils
Purple Bay routed his rivals in the Betfred Mobile Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen.
Runner-up on his last three starts at Doncaster, Taunton and Stratford, John Ferguson's five-year-old was a 7-1 shot for this Listed race assignment and moved sweetly throughout in the hands of talented 7lb claimer Mikey Ennis.
Never too far off the pace, Purple Bay began to make inroads on the leaders heading down the back straight and was briefly bustled up to go for a gap rounding the home turn , but once straightened up, Purple Bay was quickly back on the bridle and began to assert after jumping the second from the finish.
He was home and hosed by the time he had skipped over the final obstacle and was driven out to take the prize by 10 lengths.
Max Ward boxed on for pressure to fill the runner-up spot, with favourite Slim Pickens in third.
Ferguson said: "He enjoyed that. Most of his form has been on good, good to soft ground, but I wasn't sure what the ground would be like today.
"We got lucky anyway and he got a cool ride.
"He's a horse that travels very well in his races, but sometimes just gets found out. He went up 5lb to 139 for being beaten at Stratford last time.
"He'd been second in his last three races and kept going up so we thought we'd claim 7lb off him. He deserved that.
"He's in the Galway Hurdle. It's one of the biggest pots in Ireland all year, so we'll have to think about it."
Ennis is based with David Pipe and had his first winner on the Flat at Newmarket on Friday night through Light From Mars.
He said: "That was a great chance to ride get. He travelled well for me.
"I know he'd found one too good in his recent races but he kept on all the way to the line."
====================================== India too hot in Curragh opener
East India produced a telling turn of foot to make a winning debut for Aidan O'Brien in the Darley European Breeders Fund Maiden at the Curragh.
The seven-furlong contest has been a breeding ground of champions in recent seasons, with Derby hero Australia successful last year for the Ballydoyle team.
With stable companion St Patrick's Day all the rage as the 4-6 favourite after an encouraging debut second at Naas, East India was an 11-2 shot in the hands of Seamie Heffernan.
I Will Excel attempted to make the most of experience edge, drawing the sting out of his rivals halfway up the straight, but he was mowed down late by both East India and Mick Halford's newcomer Portage.
The latter was arguably finishing the stronger of the two, but East India passed the post a neck to the good, with I Will Excel running a fine race in third.
St Patrick's Day was unable to pick up and faded out of contention disappointingly.
O'Brien said: "I'm delighted. He was working like a nice horse and was just ready to start.
"Seamie took his time on him and relaxed him in the first half of the race. The idea was to give him a nice education and see what happens. He picked up really well.
"He's a very well-bred horse and we'll look for a winner's race or a Listed race now. He's a horse who'll get further than seven furlongs.
"We'll see what comes up, but he wouldn't have any bother stepping up, I would say."
====================================== Whittington pounces in Anglesey
Dick Whittington edged out old rival Toscanini in a thrilling climax to the Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables Anglesey Stakes.
Toscanini finished narrowly ahead of Dick Whittington when the pair finished second and third respectively behind Richard Pankhurst in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the pair were 2-1 joint-favourites for the rematch.
Toscanini was in the firing line from flag-fall, with Joseph O'Brien waiting until the final furlong before unleashing Dick Whittington, and though Toscanini stuck to his guns admirably against the rail, the Ballydoyle runner wore him down to take the Group Three prize by half a length.
Rapid Applause came through to finish third, with Queen Mary Stakes third Newsletter a disappointing last of five runners.
O'Brien snr said: "He's a fast horse. Five or six furlongs looks his trip. I think it would be tight to get a mile with him.
"I'm delighted and we'll look at something like the Phoenix Stakes with him."
===================================== Gutsy Ansgar makes all
Ansgar cut out virtually every yard of the running in the hands of Pat Smullen to land the Group Three Michael Murphy Home Furnishings Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh.
Sabrina Harty's 8-1 shot was fast out of the stalls in the seven-furlong contest and Smullen was happy to play the role of pacemaker.
O'Brien's 6-4 favourite Darwin, turning out just six days after winning at Fairyhouse, loomed up ominously under the trainer's son Joseph , but was unable to reel in Ansgar who passed the post a length to the good.
The hard-luck story of the race was that of Eastern Rules, who found himself trapped behind a wall of horses before flying home against the far rail to finish third.
Harty said: "That was fantastic and the horse really deserves it.
"He's had so many hold-ups. He had a kissing spine last year and sore shins a couple of years ago. He got a splint in May and was lame after Ascot.
"He's a proper horse considering all the problems he's had. He's a massive horse, he's 16 hands 2 and he's been growing and growing.
"I'm delighted for the owners. He's a machine and if he hadn't had all the problems he'd have been a special one.
"He's entered in the Group Three at Leopardstown on August 14 (Desmond Stakes) and that's his target."
A tremendous afternoon for the Harty team was completed by Breathe Easy (7-2) and Rory Cleary in the Kilsaran 50th Anniversary Handicap.
Harty said: "He has serious ability, but is so nervous and fragile. Rory gave him a great ride and got him settled early."
====================================== Kosika crushes Newbury rivals
Kosika hurtled clear in the Al Basti Equiworld EBF Breeding Winners Fillies' Handicap at Newbury.
It looked so easy afterwards, as six out of the seven runnings of this event have been won by an older horse, and Mark Johnston's representative was the only non three-year-old in the field.
Franny Norton helped her complete her hat-trick by three and a quarter lengths at the generous odds of 8-1.
"Franny said she was very keen going down but she's much like our winner last year Galician and it's a race that clearly suits older fillies," said Johnston's assistant Jock Bennett.
"We'll see what the handicapper does, but I'd say she could go to Goodwood for something."
Saab Almanal reaped the rewards for a short break and a drop in class to get on the winning trail in the Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd Maiden Stakes.
After finishing second twice, James Fanshawe was confident enough to give the colt a shot at the Dante, where he could only finish sixth, and he was feeling the effects when beaten by Wonderstruck in a good Newmarket maiden.
Saab Almanal (100-30) had Smiling Stranger to aim at, and pulled past him to win by a slightly cosy three-quarters of a length.
"It didn't look it at the time, but I think he had a hard race at York," said Fanshawe.
"He's still pretty raw, and we'll keep things small, but I do think he's a nice horse."
====================================== Music masters Hackwood rivals
Henry Candy's Music Master got up late on to claims the Al Basti Equiworld Hackwood Stakes at Newbury.
The 3-1 favourite looked unfortunate to be only fourth in the Golden Jubilee at Ascot and met trouble again before demonstrating a cutting turn of foot in the closing stages of the Group Three, beating Heeraat and Es Que Love by a neck and a short head.
"He's still pretty new to sprinting but I think a race like the Nunthorpe would suit him, as they go flat out," said Candy of the Fergus Sweeney-ridden colt.
"He didn't have much luck at Ascot and this is a bit of consolation. I don't see why he can't get even better."
================================== Fourth for Kazeem on return
Multiple Group One winner Al Kazeem had to make do with fourth on his return to action at Newbury as Amralah clinched victory in the Doom Bar Stakes.
Al Kazeem claimed the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and Sandown's Coral-Eclipse during a stunning campaign in 2013, after which he was retired to the Royal Studs in Sandringham after being bought by the Queen.
However, after reportedly getting only around 25 mares in foal, he returned to training with Roger Charlton in May and was a heavily-supported 11-10 favourite for his competitive comeback in this Listed contest.
Trapped out wide throughout in the hands of James Doyle, the six-year-old failed to get any cover and as a result raced a little keenly from the outset.
He moved ominously towards the front end heading towards the final furlong, but began to tire close home and will doubtless improve for the outing.
The Mick Channon-trained Amralah, a 16-1 shot in the hands of Andrea Atzeni, was up with the pace from the start and had just enough in the tank to hold off the late thrust of Vancouverite by a short head, with Nabucco back in third.
Atzeni said of the winner: "He jumped good and was a little bit keen early on. There wasn't much pace, but once he got his head in front he wouldn't let anyone get by him.
"It was tight. I wasn't too sure whether I'd won or not, but luckily I did."
Channon said: "He's had little niggles over the years, little problems that have held us up, and we've messed around with his trip a bit from a mile and a half to a mile and a quarter.
"Everything has come right. He ran a blinder last time. People thought it was a bit of a fluke.
"I wanted to have a go at the John Smith's Cup (at York), but Prince Faisal (owner ) wanted to have a go at a Listed race, so all credit to him.
"I think he would get a mile and a half. He hasn't got many miles on the clock and hopefully we can make him into a decent Group horse for next year.
"We'll take him home and see what Prince Faisal wants to do, but he's probably got to step up to a Group Three or a Group Two."
Charlton said: "I was really pleased. I thought looking at him before the race he was clearly happy and relaxed and of all the horses in the paddock he was sweating the least.
"James said he felt fantastic going to the start and he came into the race like he was going to win it and travelled up there very smoothly.
"I think, as I was suspicious of and told everybody as he's overweight, he just got tired, which is fair enough.
"I don't think one can criticise the horse. He's only been in training since the beginning of May and that race will have done him a huge amount of good.
"Where we go from here, we'll see. I was happy.
"I know he was favourite and it's disappointing for most people watching, but I don't think you can condemn the horse on that at all. He ran really well, showed all his enthusiasm and will improve." ========================================= Dazzling Tiggy in Nunthorpe frame
Tiggy Wiggy could be given the go-ahead to take on Europe's quickest horses in next month's Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes after claiming the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury with quite stunning ease.
The first of the Richard Hannon stable's seven previous victories in this valuable sales race came 22 years ago with Lyric Fantasy, who powered away in identical fashion by the same six lengths and went on to Group One glory with a massive juvenile allowance at York.
Tiggy Wiggy (5-2) carried top-weight with a Listed success and a second in Royal Ascot's Queen Mary under her belt, but it would have taken a hefty amount more lead in the saddle to stop her here and there was only ever going to be one winner.
Jockey Richard Hughes said: "I nearly got a face lift! She hit the gates and landed three clear and that was it then. I don't know how she got beat at Ascot now. Just watching her the other morning, she's definitely a better filly physically than she was six weeks ago."
Hannon said: "By pure luck I managed to put her in the Nunthorpe about three days after Royal Ascot and looking at that she might well take her chance.
"I don't think Hughesie will be able to ride her (in the Nunthorpe) but it's either that or the Lowther.
"I wouldn't say it was the quality of the field that was behind her in the Queen Mary, but the nature of the authority was impressive."
======================================= McCoy savours overtaking Pipe
Tony McCoy was looking forward to a "satisfying call" to Martin Pipe on Saturday night after setting a new personal best aboard It's A Gimme in the Betfred Summer Plate to pass the career total of 4,191 winners recorded by his old ally.
And an evening planned with the Pipes on Sunday will afford McCoy the opportunity to further enjoy bragging rights.
McCoy had equalled the mark with the appropriately-named On The Record at Uttoxeter on Wednesday, and went one better as the Jonjo O'Neill-trained 2-1 market leader It's A Gimme claimed the feature event of the day at Market Rasen.
The perennial champion jockey cut a confident figure throughout the two-and-three-quarter-mile Listed event and slowly eased his mount into contention heading down the back straight.
The seven-year-old looked likely to run away with the prize as he tracked the leaders into the home turn, but stable companion Lost Legend, ridden by Richie McLernon, gave McCoy and favourite-backers a real fright.
There was little to chose between the O'Neill pair jumping the final fence, but in trademark fashion McCoy lifted It's A Gimme home to triumph by a length and three-quarters. Mazuri Cowboy was third.
A mud-splattered McCoy walked back to the weighing-room while It's A Gimme received treatment for exhaustion.
He said: "The horse is OK. He's just tired. He'll be all right."
McCoy said: "I was lucky Jonjo had a few in the race and put me on this one. This is a willing little horse, who kept finding for me.
"The record was just a very personal thing between me and Mr Pipe. He set the standard and revolutionised training. He is someone I held in high esteem and we had great times together in my time as his stable jockey.
"We've had a bit of banter pretty much since I've ridden my 4,000 winner.
"It's only a personal thing and I will be putting in a satisfying call tonight."
McCoy was presented with a 20kg Lincolnshire Poacher cheese by the racecourse management in honour of his achievement.
He added on Sky Sports News: " As a jump jockey, you take it day by day. I always set myself goals, this was just my next target.
"I've had a good start to the season, now I want to ride my fastest-ever century and to be champion jockey again - if I'm lucky enough to do that it will be my 20th year. That's my main target at the moment.
"I'll just keep going, my ambition is to be champion jockey and that's all I think about.
"I have plans to see Mr and Mrs Pipe tomorrow evening, to have a nice evening and to let him know I've got more winners than he has!"
Pipe said: "He's an inspiration to all the jockeys and to everyone in racing.
"He's marvellous for our sport and it's just great we've got someone like him.
"Now, he's finally beaten me. All of us in racing are so proud of him for doing it."
O'Neill said: "He rode a fantastic race. I thought he was beat going down to the last, but it was a typical AP ride and he got there.
"It's great to be involved in this sport and AP is a great ambassador.
"It's A Gimme was just exhausted. It's a very hot day and he gave every last ounce in that race.
"We know what the problem is and he'll be OK.
"When I was riding you would never have dreamt someone could have done what AP has done. You'd have said thinking about 4,000 winners would be lunacy.
"I rode some 900 winners and then gave up. I got the money and got out!
"I know there is more racing now and everything is better, but you wouldn't think it possible.
"We won't see anything like him again, certainly no jump jockey."
McCoy soon made it win number 4,193 when scoring on Parlour Games for John Ferguson in the B Eyre & Son Ltd Ford Novices' Hurdle.
======================================= Bracelet glitters in Irish Oaks
Bracelet gave trainer Aidan O'Brien a fourth victory in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh with a determined effort in the hands of Colm O'Donoghue.
Despite winning the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, Bracelet was a 10-1 shot stepped up to Group One level.
Luca Cumani's British raider Volume took the field along for much of the mile and a half contest, but the pack had closed up by the home turn. Bracelet and stable companion Tapestry came to make it a three-way fight inside the final furlong and it was Bracelet who got the better of her stable companion by a neck to lead home an O'Brien a one-two. Volume was third.
There was controversy before the off with Volume, third in the Oaks at Epsom, having to be replated after being found to be wearing shoes on her hind legs that are not allowed to be used in Ireland. The incident caused a long delay, with the race eventually getting under way around 20 minutes later than scheduled.
For much of the journey it appeared Volume having not been in the parade ring for as long as her opponents could be a crucial factor as she bowled along clear of the field.
Even when caught she did not go down without a fight, but she eventually had to make do with minor honours.
O'Brien also saddled the fourth home Beyond Brilliance, ridden by his daughter Ana O'Brien, who was becoming the first female in history to ride in the race.
The disappointment was Dermot Weld's 7-4 favourite Tarfasha, who had filled the runner-up spot ahead of Volume at Epsom. She moved into contention early in the straight, but was a spent force inside the final furlong and passed the post well beaten in fifth.
O'Brien said: "I'm delighted for everyone. It's great for Colm. He's just got beat in this race a few times and he's also been beat in the Derby a few times. He gave her a marvellous ride and he's a world-class rider.
"She ran a great race in Ascot. I knew Joseph (O'Brien) was going to ride Tapestry if the ground was good and he was true to his word.
"Tapestry ran a great race, but she got a bit upset beforehand and circumstances conspired against her.
"This filly (Bracelet) has an incredible pedigree by Montjeu.
"Marvellous probably needs a little bit of ease in the ground and a bit of a rest now.
"We knew Dermot and Luca's fillies were the ones everyone had to beat. They were the two form horses and we knew Luca's filly would probably make the running, so the race worked out well for us.
"Beyond Brilliance did the same in Killarney. We weren't sure if she would get the trip, but Ana said she would and it was a great run.
"It's a very important race for us. It's seriously important for the fillies.
"We're in a privileged position we have such good fillies to run in the race."
O'Donoghue, securing his first Irish Classic victory following several near-misses, said: "She came into the race with a very good profile having won the Ribblesdale. They went a hard pace throughout and she ground it out well.
"She's quite calm at home. She came here on top of her form. She's bred to win the race and she's done it."
Cumani said: "As far as I'm concerned it wasn't a controversy because it's never been one in England.
"For horses that can knock themselves behind, we have what are called trailers on their hind shoes which helps them keep their hind feet apart and stops them knocking their hind legs.
"We've done this in England many times, we've done it round the world many times and it never entered our calculations that it may not be allowed here.
"As it wasn't allowed, fine. Rules are rules. We took those off and she ran well.
"It took a bit of time and I apologise for the delay we caused, but in all honesty we just didn't know this would be a problem.
"I'm here to get the filly to the post and make sure she runs to the best of her ability.
"Those shoes have helped her in the past, so we just did what was best for the filly.
"I'm sure the public were happy to see her run and not have her withdrawn.
"I got a little bit hopeful about a furlong out, but two fillies quickened up past her. She was trying to come back at the end, so all credit to her.
"I think the Yorkshire Oaks will come into the reckoning now."

19/07/2014
Market Rasen, 19 July 2014
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the circumstances which led to a loss of power supply approximately twenty minutes before the first race and a subsequent delay in the start of racing, causing all races to be run approximately thirty minutes late.
They interviewed the Clerk of the Course, the Racecourse General Manager and the Inspector of Courses. The Racecourse General Manager stated that a lightning strike had taken out three phases of racecourse power, including the links to the P A system, and the cabling to the generator was also damaged. The generator was later started manually by the racecourse team and re-cabling was carried out on the P A system, enabling racing to proceed. Having heard their evidence, the Stewards ordered a report to be sent to the British Horseracing Authority.

A HORSE trained by Charlie Hills is one of those involved in a cluster of positive tests for the prohibited substance morphine.
The BHA announced on Thursday night that the post-race samples of five horses had tested positive for the substance and warned there may be more to come.
And on Friday feed merchant Dodson & Horrell issued a statement that it had been informed by some of its suppliers of possible contamination in one of its products.
The extent of the problem has yet to be officially established, although morphine could have been found in up to 15 post-race samples.
Hills did not want to comment further at Newbury on Saturday, other than to point out none of the trainers involved had done anything wrong. He did confirm he uses Dodson & Horrell products.
At least one of the five is understood to be trained in Newmarket and to have tested positive following a recent win. There has also been speculation a big-race winner may have been caught up in the affair.
A small number of feed merchants supply a large number of Britain's trainers, although Dodson & Horrell's market rivals Baileys Horse Feeds said on Saturday they had been unaffected thus far.
Managing director Paul Venner said: "We don't have any problems as far as we are aware. If we hear anything else then clearly we will be a lot more concerned, but we've tested all ours just to make sure we have covered ourselves. At this moment we have no problem whatsoever."
Venner said the testing took place as soon as they had heard news of the positives.
"I think all the feed companies will have done exactly the same thing," he added. "These things tend to be in small pockets and obviously all the companies do test very quickly. The great thing is to get information as soon as possible to prevent any contaminated material going any further, but in this case we do not have a problem at Baileys."
Dodson & Horrell said they would be exchanging all stocks of Alfalfa Plus Oil with fresh material. The company said it was taking precautionary measures in accordance with its own procedures and the Nops (naturally occurring prohibited substances) protocol.
That protocol was created following the disqualification of the Willie Mullins-trained Be My Royal following the 2002 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup when he tested positive for morphine.
In that cluster around 37 horses in Britain tested positive for the substance.
Trainer Tim Pitt, who uses Gain horse products, said it was important the facts were established before making too much comment.
However, he added: "We put a lot of trust in the feed companies to provide clean feed. A lot has changed since the Willie Mullins case and it is very unfortunate if this has happened. I put it down as a one-off and I don't think there is any need for a knee-jerk reaction." ================================= On Location: a tale of two yards in the hinterland of Goodwood
NATURE is taking it back. Weeds push through the concrete, push towards the sun. Spiders have spun their gossamer strands over every surface, a butterfly wags its wings as it perches on a blossom of the relentless invader buddleia, bird droppings speckle the floor of every box.
The silence is broken by a peal of bells from Arundel cathedral, a horseshoe’s throw from the neglected paddock behind the final row of boxes. Send not to know for whom the bells toll, for they toll for Castle Stables, once the busiest in Britain with more than 200 horses, now no more than a collection of shabby outbuildings with peeling paint and tarnished fittings ready for the bulldozer.
From here John Dunlop trained more than 3,000 winners, ten British Classic winners, some of the most resonant and well-regarded names of recent years. In times past the yard would have been gearing up for Glorious Goodwood, the local festival at which Dunlop reaped a mighty harvest over the decades; production ceased in the autumn of 2012 and at this time of year its dereliction is particularly poignant.
Over the hills and not far away, the desuetude of Castle Stables is thrown into relief by the thriving Angmering Park yard of William Knight, tucked away in a wrinkle of the South Downs about two miles east. From the top of his gallops, as he patiently steers his four-by-four through fields of sheep soporific in the midday heat, Knight can clearly see Arundel Castle, although the stables that bear the name are lost in the background blur of greenery.
There are similarities here – Dunlop rented Castle Stables from the Duke of Norfolk’s estate until abrupt retirement and voluntary liquidation followed, Knight leases his yard from the estate and has expanded his territory as Lady Herries, eldest daughter of the 16th Duke and trainer of the superlative Celtic Swing, has reduced her holding, and Dunlop’s head man Dave Kitcher now works for Knight – but the one salient difference is the one that jars. Knight is looking forward to Glorious Goodwood, has several contenders earmarked, all is as it should be; Castle Stables moulders, its present state as inglorious as the fashion of Dunlop’s departure.
“This is a fantastic place to train racehorses,” says Knight, 37, whose finest hour thus far arrived when Illustrious Blue won the 2010 Goodwood Cup. “It’s a fabulous place to live, to bring up a family, but if there is a downside it’s that we’re slightly out on a limb, well away from the main training centres, and I think some owners see that as a disadvantage.
“Once owners come here they see it for what it is, and that’s great, but it can be quite difficult to get horses – we’ve got 45 in at the moment and could comfortably take 20 more. Winners bring owners, and we’ll just keep on trying on that front.”
If you were a horse you’d love to be trained on the Angmering Park estate, on rolling countryside in clean sea air without a road in sight. Knight waves an arm at his long, sinuous, gently ascending Soft Track gallop that curves over the horizon, that marks the boundary with the Arundel estate, points out the woodland walkways that are carpeted with bluebells at the right time of year, follows the loop his horses take to bring them home, never having to retrace their steps. The Solent sparkles in the distance.
“The Glorious Goodwood meeting is important to us, we’ve been lucky there, and I always aim some of our better horses there,” says Knight, who has also been honing his talent for the Lord March XI v Lord’s Taverners XI cricket match on the evening of the opening day, and quietly worrying about facing the bowling of ex-England paceman Andy Caddick. He wants rain, not to wash out the cricket but to ease the way for his horses, the majority of whom want cut in the ground, and if it has been a season of frustration – 13 winners, 19 seconds – the forthcoming pleasures at Goodwood offer the chance to ease any discontent.
Beacon Lady, ideally suited by Goodwood if only because it involves next to no travelling, is on target for the Lillie Langtry Stakes, while Secret Art – the current inhabitant of Celtic Swing’s old box – will join Maverik over a mile if the handicapper gives him an inch. Fire Ship may go too, while Aussie Reigns may have his sights raised for the Group 3 Glorious Stakes, which offers a win-and-you’re-in incentive for the Caulfield Cup, a prospect that has Knight leafing through the calendar in excitement.
There’s an energy about the yard, a go-ahead style emphasised by the stark contrast with Castle Stables and its facilities left fallow. “The gallops are still intact, I was up there only the other day, but I’m pretty sure it’ll never be a racing yard again,” adds Knight. “It’s a great shame because it was a wonderful old yard and John had such great success there.” William Knight's derelict yard
IT WILL never be a racing yard again because the Norfolk Estate intend it to be developed for housing, families putting their feet up where Derby winners Shirley Heights and Erhaab once shuffled their feet in the straw, where the likes of Silver Patriarch, Ragstone, Bahri and Wassl returned in triumph from Royal Ascot, Doncaster and the Curragh. The world needs more houses, but it’s a shame a handful of them are expected to be built here, on the site of so much racing history.
Ken ‘Scobie’ Bedford was part of that history for 33 years, his award-winning career spent under the patrician rule of Major Dick Hern and Major Michael Pope before he came south to join Dunlop. Bedford, 63, now works in the building trade and pursues a burgeoning career as a DJ in his spare time. He’s a gregarious soul but his voice takes on a wistful cast at the mention of Castle Stables.
“It all ended in a sad way,” he says. “One week we were told that Mr Dunlop was packing up at the end of the year, but that we’d all be looked after. The next week we were told the company had been liquidated and there was nothing for anyone.
“The horses left, we tidied everything up at the yard and that was that. We shouldn’t have been told we’d be looked after – we weren’t even supplied with references. I’d been there 33 years and all I got when it ended was £11,500.”
He snorts derisively, yet he’s reluctant to cast aspersions towards his old boss, who he calls “a gentleman, someone who’d always help you out, and it was such a shame that he just sort of slipped away out of the back door of racing”. And although it galls him that it ended badly he emphasises that he enjoyed his time at the yard immensely, travelling Europe and beyond with the likes of Alwuhush, Big Bad Bob, Lucido and Leggera.
“I remember when I took Alwuhush to New York for the Turf Classic. I had an awful time sorting out my passport – which had just expired – and my visa, and in the end the guv’nor paid for me to take a special flight to the US because he didn’t want to send anyone else with the hors e, I knew him so well.”
In Bedford’s hands the past comes alertly to life, tales of painting Arundel red after big-race victories, shaking up the staid little tourist trap in a way that must make the town’s publicans bitterly regret the yard’s passing.
“They called us the Stable Rats because we got in everywhere,” he says, the glint in his eye bright enough to dazzle. “The night Quick As Lightning won the Guineas [1980], we went out and drank Arundel dry.
“We went in the Eagle and a chap called Angus was hanging off the rail above the bar, and he shouted across the room to a load of bikers ‘now call us the Stable Rats, we’ve got money in our pockets and we’re going to spend the lot’. We went from pub to pub to pub, did the lot, and yet not a lad or girl was late for work the next day, all there at half past six. Headaches, yes, but all on time.
“I had a bet going on – Sea Chimes to win the City And Suburban, Quick As Lightning to win the 1,000 Guineas and Posse to win the 2,000, had them in each-way doubles and trebles. The first two won and if Posse had won instead of finishing second . . . I’d have been a rich man. I still picked up a lot from the each-way patent, mind.”
And then he comes back to earth with a bump. “One of the best yards in the country, and now look at it.”
Now look at it. The cathedral bells stop, and in the sudden silence the imagination conjures up the sight of Salsabil, Shadayid, Habibti, Circus Plume, Quick As Lightning and Awaasif walking out of the particularly decrepit ‘fillies’ yard’, off to conquer the world for John Dunlop and Castle Stables. The weeds wave in the breeze, wave goodbye. ======================================== USA: Stevens requires full knee surgery GARY STEVENS, whose comeback to the saddle last year was topped with a famous win in the Breeders' Cup Classic, will require a full right knee replacement after an MRI scan showed the injury was worse than first thought.

Just the one ride for Ryan Moore this afternoon in the shape of Mango Diva, and having won the same race last year aboard Dank the Betfair Ambassador has reason to expect another good showing today...
15:45 Curragh - Sunday
Mango Diva
We won this race with Dank last year, but I think it is fair to say that we don't come here with the same level of confidence this time around. But Mango Diva came over to Ireland to win her Group 3 when successful over 1m1f at Gowran Park last September and she has run two decent races this season, most recently when fifth at Epsom. And arguably this is a bit less competitive race than what she has faced this season, so perhaps I do have reason to be pretty hopeful. In fact, the more I look at the race, the more winnable it becomes and she has been working well in the run-up to this. My Titania is the obvious one to beat, though.

16:45 Sunday 20th July Racing Tips - 20/07/2014
Have to keep these brief as I'm at the cricket but the Curragh can't be left alone today. I'm convinced we are yet to see the best of Festive Cheer but he is frustrating and should be avoided today. The 3 year olds make most appeal and given Dermot Weld's record in the race it's worth taking a chance on his filly Afternoon Sunlight at 9/2. She is unbeaten this year and these Sea The Stars fillies tend to get better and better. I'd worry about her trying to make all here but any rain will suit given she has won on soft and a step up to 10 furlongs is definitely a plus. Her Palace form is fine given that filly winning a Listed contest and this looks a weak Group 3. Curragh 15.15 - Afternoon Sunlight 1pt win
My Titania has been well supported all morning and it's easy to see why. She didn't have the race run to suit in the Coronation and probably wants at least this far anyway. However, I think Mango Diva has been underestimated and is a decent bet at 11/2. A forecast between the 2 is a good option too. Stoute won this last year and she is better than we saw at Epsom when carrying a penalty. The form looks good though and could be enough to win this off levels with the other 4 year olds. Much depends on how good My Titania is... Curragh 15.45 - Mango Diva 1pt win
The Rockingham was won last year by Whozthecat and, though he's not in the same sort of form now, he's been underestimated for this at 14/1. He's 3lb higher and has plenty more weight on his back but he won in a good time and gets on well with his apprentice rider. Declan Carroll is going well too. The other of interest is Green Door but 3 year olds don't have the best record in the race and it's a tall order carrying 9-11 for a youngster. Curragh 16.45 - Whozthecat 1pt e/w

Sous heads Galway Hurdle betting Pique Sous has been installed as favourite for the Guinness Galway Hurdle. Paddy Power make the Willie Mullins-trained Royal Ascot hero the clear 4-1 market leader for the prestigious event at Ballybrit on July 31. A horse at his best on a fast surface and who has made a tremendous recovery from a serious colic, the Supreme Racing-owned seven-year-old rewarded heavy market support when landing the Queen Alexandra Stakes under Ryan Moore on the final day of the showpiece meeting. He has not raced over hurdles since last year's Galway Hurdle, where he was pulled up in a race won by the mare Missunited. Paddy Power said: "Pique Sous hasn't run over hurdles since the Galway Hurdle last year, so presumably Willie has been protecting his handicap mark for a big one and we're a bit wary of this horse after the bashing he gave us at Royal Ascot." Another smart dual-purpose contender is the Gordon Elliott-trained Bayan, a winner on the Flat at Leopardstown recently and third in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. He was second at Galway 12 months ago on the level in the Guinness Handicap and shares 10-1 joint second-favouritism with Tony Martin's Quick Jack, who was third to Gilgamboa in the valuable Boylesports.com Hurdle at Leopardstown in January. Yet another who thrives under both codes, the Footstepsinthesand gelding was third in a mile-and-a-half handicap last year, when Martin enjoyed a tremendous week. ================================== No rush for East aim Connections of East Coast Lady are in hurry to firm up plans for the promising two-year-old filly after she opened her account in a six-furlong maiden at Newmarket's July meeting. The William Stone-trained daughter of Kodiac overcame the extremely wet conditions that day to run out a clear-cut three-and-a-half length winner in a depleted 12-strong field. She had shaped encouragingly, however, on her debut over the same course and distance in different conditions. "She's absolutely fine and in good order. We haven't done a great deal with her since, but there are no problems with her," said the Cambridge handler. "We're just giving her a bit of time and then we'll decide from there. I'll speak to the owners. They will have their own ideas and there's nothing set out yet. "She's been given a handicap mark of 85. We'll just to have to see what the other horses that she beat do when they come out and that will show us the strength of that maiden. Let's hope she can go on." ============================================ Guest considers Memory options Rae Guest's speedy filly Jane's Memory will run next at either Newbury or York after her recent forays to France. The daughter of Captain Rio won at Leicester on her debut but her next two races were at Chantilly. She finished second in a Listed event and filled the same spot in a Group Three behind the highly-regarded Goken. "There's a five-furlong Listed race at Newbury in mid-August that she could run in and if she didn't run there she could go for the Lowther at York, that's the plan anyway," said Guest. "She won well first time out and we could have run her in the Queen Mary, but everyone with a nice filly goes for the Queen Mary. Also, I wanted to keep her away from fast ground. "We took her to France because we were guaranteed a bit of cut in the ground and the first time she ran there was a bit unlucky, she was a bit green and was beaten by a colt. "Next time she was beaten by a colt again but a very good one and we were well clear of the rest." ====================================== Euro stays with Botti Euro Charline is set to continue her career with Marco Botti in Friday's Woodcote Stud EBF Stallions Valiant Stakes at Ascot. The three-year-old, who is owned by American syndicate Team Valor, was expected to depart for the States after her fine run in third in the Coronation Stakes at Ascot. However, following a change of heart, Botti has had the green light to plot her campaign for the foreseeable future. "She was supposed to go to Saratoga for a Grade Two but it was a complicated flight and Team Valor decided to change plans," said Botti. "She will stay in Europe and obviously I'm delighted to keep her. There are plenty of options for her. "There's a one-mile Listed race at Ascot this week that she could run in and I think she will go there rather than for the Oak Tree at Goodwood which is over seven furlongs. I'd rather leave her at a mile than drop her back in trip." =================================== Ascot on Moohaarib agenda Moohaarib, one of the leading ante-post fancies for the Betfred Mile at Glorious Goodwood, is likely to run at Ascot this weekend instead. Trained by Marco Botti, the Oasis Dream colt has won his last two races in the style of a young horse going places. Unraced at two, he got off the mark at the third time of asking at Ripon before making his opening handicap mark of 85 look pretty lenient. "The plan is to run Moohaarib at Ascot," said Botti. "There's a three-year-old handicap over the straight mile (Weatherbys Private Banking Handicap) which is worth quite a lot of money (£45,000). "So while he's in at Goodwood, he'll probably run at Ascot I think." ======================================= Injury blow for Boistron team Marco Botti still hopes Tac De Boistron will be able to defend his Prix Royal-Oak title at Longchamp in October after ruling his stable star out of his next two targets. The Italian had planned to run him in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh in September and the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp a few weeks later. The seven-year-old is suffering from bruised ribs but the damage is not serious. "He's going the miss the Irish St Leger and the Cadran," said Botti. "I hope he'll be fine for the Prix Royal-Oak. "It was just a freak accident, he fell over outside and bruised his ribs but they are not broken. "He's been for a bone scan and it just showed they are tender and we can't put any tack on him "Usually it takes two or three weeks to heal." ======================================== No hurry for Tiggy target Richard Hannon is in no rush to commit Tiggy Wiggy to a run in next month's Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York. The Queen Mary runner-up barely saw another rival in winning the Weatherbys Super Sprint by six lengths off top weight. There is now a chance she could try to emulate Lyric Fantasy, who also won both races when trained by Hannon's father. "They both won the Newbury race by six lengths, although whereas Lyric Fantasy had only 10 opponents when she blitzed them, Tiggy Wiggy had to give weight to 23 rivals," the trainer told www.richardhannonracing.co.uk"Maybe the similarity between the two fillies got in my head three days after Royal Ascot, because I sat down then and entered her for next month's Nunthorpe. "Only one two-year-old (Kingsgate Native) has beaten the older horses at York since Lyric Fantasy, but Tiggy Wiggy looks to have all the right credentials to warrant a go. "We had hoped that something might give us a tow early on, but Tiggy Wiggy hit the gates and was three lengths clear after just 50 yards, so (Richard) Hughesie had no option but to let her bowl. "She quickened again when he picked her up at the two-pole and, in all honesty, she never looked like getting beat. Obviously, it wasn't the same quality of field that she encountered in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, but she is very quick and she won with such authority that you could not fail to have been impressed. "The alternative route would be to go Lowther-Cheveley Park, but we would have to get her to settle better if we took that option, and it is certainly tempting to take up the Nunthorpe challenge. "She would have only 7st 12lb, so that rules out Hughesie, but I am sure there would not be a shortage of volunteers if we decide to take on the older sprinters at York. "There is no rush to make a decision - we'll sit on it for a couple of weeks and talk to the owners, but we are certainly considering a tilt at the Nunthorpe very seriously. "Tiggy Wiggy is not that big, but she has definitely made enormous physical improvement since Royal Ascot, and it was the right decision to give Newmarket's July meeting a miss and have a fresh filly for Newbury. "We have two top two-year-old colts in Ivawood and Estidhkaar and it now looks as if we have a couple of exciting fillies, too, in Tiggy Wiggy and Osaila." ========================================== Magical Moore shines again Ryan Moore and Sir Michael Stoute teamed up for the second year in a row to land the Kilboy Estate Stakes at the Curragh with Mango Diva. After Dank took this before success overseas last year, similar targets may lie ahead for Mango Diva after she got up in the final stride of the Group Two. Lahinch Classics made a bold bid and appeared to have done enough to cling on having seen off Odeliz and the slightly disappointing My Titania. But Moore is never in a mood to be denied and the 9-2 chance overhauled David Wachman's filly in the nine-furlong Group Three. My Titania was half a length back in third. James Savage, Stoute's travelling head lad, said: "We were glad there wasn't much rain last night, she's a good-moving filly and wants top of the ground. "I was praying for it to stop but in the end it just made it nice ground. "She's progressive and forward moving and while that could be her trip, she will stay 10. She just gets caught on her head a bit over a mile. "The boss and the owner will look for her next race, but she might follow the Dank route." Another British-trained winner was Tim Pitt's Sir Maximilian (11-1) who flew down the centre of the track in a furiously run Rockingham Handicap to capture the prize from fellow raider Caspian Prince. Pitt said: "He'd have won the Wokingham I had him in such good form but he missed the cut. I was silly to run him in a Group Three after that.. "I was worried about the ground, it's not that he needs cut he just lacks a bit of early pace and if something gets an early run on him he can struggle to get them back. "He does get six furlongs but a fast-run five suits him as well, he's able to keep tabs on them and pick them up. "My only other runner in Ireland finished stone last in the Goffs Million, so this is great. "He's in the Stewards' Cup (32Red) but won't go if it's rattling quick. His main aim is the Ayr Gold Cup." RaceBets cut him to 25-1 from 33s for the Goodwood race. Parish Hall (11-8) may not be the force he was in his two-year-old days but he remains a horse to be reckoned with just below the top class and won the Group Three Meld Stakes for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning. Manning said: "He's done it well and handled the ground and got the trip well. "I wasn't sure where the pace was going to come from but I knew he had a turn of foot so I just got him settled and followed the pace. "My instructions were to drop him in and arrive late." Una Manning, who had spoken on the phone to her father, Bolger, said: "He said (Bolger) he'll stick to 10 furlongs and feels that it is only this year that he is getting over his injury. We can now hope for better things. "He said he settled well today but he hasn't decided what's next, the plan was to get him back on a winning note. We'll just see what there is." Toogoodtobetrue (1-2 favourite) continued a fine weekend for Aidan O'Brien when getting off the mark at the second attempt in the Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital European Breeders Fund Maiden. A close second on her debut at Naas earlier this month, the Oasis Dream filly confirmed that promise and did it well considering she had to race widest of the main protagonists through the early stages. O'Brien said: "You'd have to be delighted with that. She came forward lovely from her first run. "Joseph (O'Brien) was very happy with her and he thinks she is a very nice filly. "She will love stepping up to seven furlongs and she could be one for the Debutante or the Moyglare." Brendan Duke enjoyed a welcome winner and a change of luck as Intenser (14-1) got on top close home in the Irish Champions Weekend 13th & 14th September Nursery Handicap. Duke said: "They've been running great, but I've had 11 seconds. I signed up for a course on internet about how to survive in the wilderness! "I'm delighted he's won. It's made a big difference gelding him. He just got there and the handicapper probably did a good job rating them. "Hopefully we'll find another day somewhere and we've been thinking about the nursery in Galway for a long time with him." ======================================== Kool result for Hannon Kool Kompany added to his growing list of significant wins with a gutsy display in the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte. Richard Hannon's tough juvenile has now had six races and his only defeat came in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He already had a Listed and Group Two win to his name from successful forays to Ireland and obviously has no problem with travelling. Richard Hughes could not grab the rail position he wanted as the speedy Goken showed more initial toe, but once he failed to put distance between himself and the Hannon horse the Irishman looked more confident. Kool Kompany's big white face hit the front inside the final furlong of the five and a half trip, and despite Lehaim challenging wide it was Charlie Hills' Strath Burn, having just his second ever run, who closed into second. The Prix Robert Papin has been won by such luminaries as Arazi (1991), Natagora (2007), Special Duty (2009) and Clive Cox's Reckless Abandon two years ago. The decision to travel to France was made after a sparkling piece of work on Hannon's gallops on Wednesday morning, when Hughes felt Kool Kompany had improved physically since his win in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh. He is another success story for owners Middleham Park Racing, who paid just £40,000 for the son of Jeremy. Middleham racing manager Tim Palin explained the winner's options boil down to potentially two races from three, with a deserved crack at a Group One the plan. "He's as tough as old boots and has talent to go with it," said Palin. "Hughesie said that if Goken wanted to go on he would let him and it looks like as he was so determined to make it he's gone too fast and not got home over the extra distance. "He also said that he'd have no trouble staying seven so we should be thinking of the National Stakes. "I can't think of another dual Group Two-winning juvenile so he's leading the way again for us in Europe after Toormore did last year. "The obvious route is Group One now, so there's the Morny, the Phoenix Stakes, which he'd need to be supplemented for, or the National Stakes. We can supplement with his winnings. "We said we'd give him a break after his last win, yet 22 days later he's won another Group Two. He looked as well as he ever has today. "The drop in trip nearly caught him out. Richard jnr thinks we've probably got the beating of the Irish horses so going back there is a strong possibility, although Cappella Sansevero could bounce back and you never know what Aidan O'Brien has got up his sleeve." John Gosden's Western Hymn, who met with the first defeat of his career in the Investec Derby at Epsom, returned to winning ways with a dominant display in the Prix Eugene Adam. Six went to post for the mile and a quarter Group Two with Rod Millman's Master Carpenter also sent over after winning in France most recently. As Western Hymn challenged down the centre of the track for William Buick, Christophe Lemaire challenged up the inside on Master Carpenter. With Andre Fabre's Army Bulletin in the middle of the two British raiders, Western Hymn quickened impressively to readily put daylight between himself and the rest. Army Bulletin was second, with Master Carpenter third. Gosden was winning the race for a third time and last took the spoils with Debussy in 2009. Buick said: "He is still a big baby. He has got a tendency to look around when he's running, so you have to keep on top of that. "He doesn't lack in class and speed, the race suited him and he really enjoyed himself." =========================================== Encke set for Glorious return Godolphin's St Leger winner Encke is poised to return to action in the Coutts Glorious Stakes at Goodwood after pleasing connections in a racecourse gallop after racing at Newmarket on Saturday. Not seen since denying Camelot a place in history in 2012, he was suspended from racing for the majority of last year following the Mahmood Al Zarooni drugs scandal. Encke worked with Personal Opinion over a mile and drew clear with two furlongs to run. Speaking to www.godolphin.com, trainer Charlie Appleby said: "Encke came out of the gallop very well this morning and it is all systems go for Goodwood at the moment. "He is heading for the Group Three Coutts Glorious Stakes over a mile and a half on Friday, August 1, provided there is good ground. We wouldn't want to race him on fast ground there. "Encke is showing all the right signs but the race will tell us whether he holds the same enthusiasm and ability he displayed as a three-year-old. "He was in Dubai for the winter and we have taken our time with him on purpose so he can compete in the second half of this season."

2.40, second race
The Starter reported that TUKITINYASOK (IRE), trained by Clive Mulhall, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the start. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that SHEARIAN, unplaced, ridden by Joe Fanning, had interfered with DANDARRELL, placed fourth, ridden by Paul Mulrennan. The Stewards found Fanning in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift left handed towards the rail, causing interference. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Sunday 3 August 2014.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Shirley Teasdale, the rider of YORKSTERS PRINCE (IRE), placed second, from approximately three and a half furlongs out. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she had used her whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Teasdale for 11 days as follows: Wednesday 6, Thursday 7, Friday 8, Saturday 9, Sunday 10, Monday 11, Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13, Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 August, 2014.
3.40, fourth race
The Stewards noted that MIXED MESSAGE (IRE), placed second, had interfered with AL FURAT (USA), placed fourth, approximately one and a half furlongs out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved MIXED MESSAGE (IRE)’s placing.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, LE DELUGE (FR), ridden by Graham Gibbons and trained by Michael Easterby, compared with its previous run at Thirsk on 10 May 2014 where the gelding finished twelfth of seventeen, beaten approximately 22 lengths. They noted the explanation from the trainer’s representative that the gelding was better suited by being allowed to dominate. They ordered LE DELUGE (FR) to be routine tested.
4.10, fifth race
The Stewards noted that FOREIGN RHYTHM (IRE), drawn 5, had anticipated the start and accelerated the opening of the stalls. Being satisfied that this was not a malfunction and the start had not been affected, the Stewards took no further action.
4.40, sixth race
The Stewards noted that there was interference between DALMARELLA DANCER (IRE), unplaced, and IVY PORT, placed third, approximately one and a half furlongs out, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved IVY PORT’s placing.
5.40, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Jack Garritty, the rider of TIME OF MY LIFE (IRE), placed fifth, had appeared to stop riding shortly before the winning post. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found him in breach of Rule (B)59.3.2.1 and guilty of failing to ride out on a horse that would have finished fourth. They suspended him for 4 days as follows: Sunday 3, Monday 4, Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 August 2014.
20/07/2014
Newton Abbot, 20 July 2014
5.20, seventh race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of DURLEIGH BROOK, trained by Tim Vaughan, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £140.
20/07/2014
Stratford, 20 July 2014
2.30, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Maurice Linehan, the rider of the winner, CALAF had continued in the race when his horse appeared to have gone lame shortly after the last hurdle. They interviewed the rider and the Veterinary Officer, who confirmed that CALAF had finished lame on his left foreleg. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)45.3 and suspended him for 8 days as follows: Sunday 3, Wednesday 13, Thursday 14, Saturday 16, Sunday 17, Tuesday 19, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 August 2014. The Stewards gave permission for CALAF not to enter the Winners Enclosure.

Euro Charline is set to continue her career with Marco Botti in Friday's Woodcote Stud EBF Stallions Valiant Stakes at Ascot. Euro Charline is set to stay with trainer Marco Botti. Euro Charline is set to continue her career with Marco Botti in Friday's Woodcote Stud EBF Stallions Valiant Stakes at Ascot. I'd rather leave her at a mile than drop her back in trip."

Marco Botti still hopes Tac De Boistron will be able to defend his Prix Royal-Oak title at Longchamp in October after ruling his stable star out of his next two targets. Tac De Boistron could be back to defend his Prix Royal-Oak title. "He's been for a bone scan and it just showed they are tender and we can't put any tack on him "Usually it takes two or three weeks to heal."

16:55 Monday 21st July Racing Tips - 21/07/2014
Taurus Twins might win again under Ali Rawlinson's 7lb claim and he goes well here. That also brings Corncockle into play in first time hood for a yard that will get a win out of this capable 3 year old. The latter has form ahead of Taurus Twins and is now better off at the weights. Imperial Legend is 1lb better off with Hazelrigg for their South Ayrshire Cup run and there wasn't much between them but the latter is never a 10/1 poke for this. He has his rail draw, much needed, and cut in the ground. Hopefully the sun doesn't dry it out too much as the softer the better for him. He has 2 wins and a 2nd from 5 starts over course and distance, 5 of his 6 career wins have come with David Allan on top, and he'll be fitter for his reappearance. Will go close. Ayr 15.20 - Hazelrigg 1pt e/w
Ifwecan has a super chance in the Ayr feature but won't be allowed things his own way up top and looks short at 2/1. It's worth noting he did well, very well to finish where he did last time having been up with the pace but there are some progressive course lovers here that will appreciate a strong pace. None more so than Le Chat D'Or at 13/2 who loves it here and who has a great record with Mulrennan on top. He's up in class and up 6lb but the form of his last win couldn't have really worked out better. He will not want the ground to dry out but they had 40mm the day before yesterday so some soft should remain. Dods' other runner Muharrer is also worth consideration, so too Another For Joe but he is only 1lb better off with the selection and has a bit to find. Ayr 16.55 - Le Chat D'Or 1pt e/w

Ebor the Clever choice for Cookie Clever Cookie remains on course for a tilt at the Betfred Ebor at York on August 23. Peter Niven's stable star, a staying-on ninth in the John Smith's Cup earlier this month, is in good form at his Malton base and will be trained for the valuable handicap on the Knavesmire next month. A Grade Two winner over hurdles and beaten just once in four starts on the Flat, his last race was not run to suit the six-year-old but his trainer remains upbeat. He said: "It wasn't a bad run and I'm pleased with the way he has come out of the race. "He stayed on well off a slow pace and the ground probably got a little bit too quick for him. "They went a crawl and it turned into a seven furlong sprint. Everything just happened too quick for him and it was only the two horses towards the head of affairs that got involved." Still as short as 10-1 in the ante-post market for the Ebor, Clever Cookie has been eased just 1lb in the weights but Niven is confident that the step back up in trip will play to his strengths. "I don't think he'll have to improve too much and if we can get good ground I'd be expecting an improved performance from him," said Niven. "Let's not forget that he's been on the go for a long time and he's gone up a lot in the weights as well. "He'll appreciate a short break and I'd expect the step back up in distance to be to his liking next month." ====================================== Haggas expects Hanagan to ride Tag William Haggas expects Paul Hanagan to chose Investec Oaks winner Taghrooda over his own Coral-Eclipse winner Mukhadram in Saturday's King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The Group One mid-summer highlight, sponsored by Qipco British Champions Series, had extra spice added last week when owner Hamdan Al Maktoum decided he wanted the John Gosden-trained Taghrooda, so impressive at Epsom, to take on the colts this weekend rather than run in last Saturday's Irish Oaks. That sets up a clash with Haggas' Mukhadram, also owned by the Sheikh, but the Newmarket handler expects Hanagan, retained by Al Maktoum, to go with the younger horse. He does not believe it should alter his running plans in any way, however. "As far as I am concerned, he is going for the King George. I've heard no different and I have been training him for the race," Haggas told the Times. "I'd be staggered if Paul didn't ride Taghrooda. I don't think he could possibly get off an Oaks winner, especially with her weight allowance. "It was exactly the same situation when we went for the King George with Shaamit, after he'd won the Derby in 1996. Michael Hills got off our horse to ride Pentire. He said it was the worst decision he ever had to make but he was right - Pentire won and we were only third. "We'd always felt he (Mukhadram) was a Group One horse and I was disappointed for him (when second in the Dubai World Cup). That's why the Eclipse was so special. I planned to come on for the King George straight away, because this is a horse that is better for racing. "He's never run beyond ten furlongs, but he's not a keen or silly horse and he might be even better for the trip. "Angus Gold (racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan) came to see me last week and told me that plans for Taghrooda had changed. He didn't say it altered my plans, though, and I'm hoping we will still run. "I never like taking on another of Sheikh Hamdan's in ordinary fare but a G roup One is different." Hanagan's understudy, Dane O'Neill, is in line for the ride on Mukhadram. =================================== Channon excited by Amralah progress Mick Channon is excited by the prospect of Amralah progressing through the ranks following his determined success in the Doom Bar Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. Channon's lightly-raced Teofilo colt hit the front at the two-furlong marker and knuckled down well to repel the likes of multiple Group One winner Al Kazeem, Nabucco and the fast-finishing Vancouverite. The four-year-old had been beaten in competitive handicaps off marks in the low 90s this season, but the drop back to ten furlongs has brought about plenty of improvement in Listed company the last twice and Channon placed all the praise with owner Prince Faisal for taking the plunge. He said on "That was a great showing from a horse we've always had to wait on. Everyone was talking about Al Kazeem's comeback and at 16-1 we probably ruined a few people's day but we're delighted with Amralah. "It's only now that he's becoming a man. We've had many a setback, little niggles here and there - hamstring pulls and the like and we've never had a clear run at him. "It's all coming right now though. He was second in Listed company at Sandown last time out and was a real professional on Saturday. We knew he was well handicapped before those displays and off a mark of 92 I wanted to go the handicap route. "Prince Faisal was adamant we should step into Listed level and although I disagreed at the time he deserves the credit for Saturday. Certainly the handicap plan is over as he's beaten 110-rated horses and above now. "That's not a problem, we'll have to see how good he can be in this company and we're all looking forward to seeing how far he can go." ======================================= Pique Sous confirmed for Galway Royal Ascot hero Pique Sous is being lined up for an audacious and lucrative double after connections confirmed the dashing grey is set to line up in both next week's Galway Hurdle and the Betfred Ebor at York next month. The Willie Mullins-trained seven-year-old landed the Queen Alexandra Stakes under Ryan Moore in Berkshire last month and is set to revert to the jumping game at Ballybrit next week before a trip to the Knavesmire on August 23. Steve Massey, racing manager for owners the Supreme Horse Racing Club, said: "I've spoken to Willie this morning and the plan is to go for the Galway Hurdle and then run in the Ebor, as long as the ground is right. "It's very exciting to have a horse who is favourite for the richest handicap hurdle in Europe and the richest Flat handicap in Europe. We're aiming to pick up around £400,000 in prize-money in a little over three weeks! "We wouldn't even be considering running over hurdles if it wasn't for the prize-money, but we think he's well treated over hurdles and he's in great form at the moment, so we're keen to give it a go. "Paul Townend schooled him over hurdles this morning and everything went well, so we're just hoping this dry spell continues and he stays sound." With a hurdle rating of 137 Pique Sous is currently set to carry 10st 8lb in the 150,000 euro contest on Thursday week, following the publication of the weights. The top of the weights are dominated by British raiders with John Ferguson's Purple Bay, a runaway winner of Saturday's Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen, heading the field on 11st 10lb. Ferguson also has Parlour Games (10st 12lb), Bordoni (10st 8lb) and Dubai Prince (10st 5lb) among a numerically strong team. Charlie Longsdon's Vulcanite is second on the list with a burden of 11st 6lb, with Alan King's Montbazon (11st 2lb) and the Seamus Mullins-trained Fergal (11st) all on 11 stone or above. Other contenders include Gordon Elliott's Bayan (10st 12lb), Tony Martin's Quick Jack (9st 10lb) and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Plinth (10st 5lb). ===================================== Minella to take Plate test John Butler has given Minella For Value the green light to take his chance in next week's thetote.com Galway Plate. The eight-year-old has been allotted 11st in the initial weights for the 120,000 euro steeplechase and while Butler admits it would be a dream to win the race, he is under no illusions as to the size of the task. He said: "It would be fantastic just to finish in the places, but it's the stuff of dreams to think he can go and win it. I think 11st is a nice racing weight and he'll go to Southwell tomorrow (Tuesday) for a pipe opener." He added: "He'll also get an entry for a race on the Tuesday of the Festival just in case they are forecast rain for Wednesday." Generally a 16-1 chance for the valuable handicap on Wednesday week, Minella For Value ran out when still well in contention in the John Smith's Summer Cup at Uttoxeter last month, but Butler is confident he will put that mishap behind him. He added: "He ran out of room in the Summer Cup and had no where else to go. "It was unfortunate because he was running a nice race at the time. It's not an ideal preparation but he's only had four runs from me and could still be improving. "We would prefer the ground coming up on the quicker side of good, but we're excited about the prospect of travelling over for such a big race and although it will be hellish competitive, it will be a great experience for him." At the head of the weights is Kid Cassidy (11st 10lb), second in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham in 2013 and the only horse to have lowered the colours of Sire De Grugy last season. JP McManus is likely to be typically well represented with It's A Gimme (10st 6lb), the impressive winner of the Summer Plate at Market Rasen on Saturday, a 10-1 chance for the owner at present. McManus also has Alderwood (11st 4lb), Vulcanite (11st 2lb) and Competitive Edge (10st 12lb) among a strong attack on this year's prize. Other contenders include the Rebecca Curtis-trained The Romford Pele (11st 5lb), Jim Culloty's Cheltenham Festival winner Spring Heeled (11st 4lb) and Donald McCain's Kie (10st 12lb). ========================================== Toscanini team mull options Connections of Toscanini have yet to map out a plan for the Anglesey Stakes runner-up following his fine run at the Curragh. The son of Shamardal finished second for the third consecutive time in Saturday's Group Three contest and he has shown some excellent form in four career outings. Sporting the royal blue silks of Godolphin, he finished third to subsequent Coventry Stakes second Cappella Sansevero on his Naas debut in May, before running a head second to Kool Kompany there in Listed company and again grabbing the silver medal in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. Trainer Mick Halford said: "I'm happy with how he's come out of the race on Saturday and he was in good form this morning. "He's yet to win a race but still boasts a rating of 104 and that just shows you how well he's done up to now. "There is no definite plan with him. I'll sit down with the owners to discuss where we'll go next but I'm really pleased with how he ran again on Saturday and he's an exciting horse going forward." ================================ Fast Kaar given Dewhurst target Estidhkaar, runaway winner of the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival, has been given the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes as an end-of-season target. Richard Hannon's Dark Angel colt justified favouritism with some authority in the Group Two and earned himself a rating of 113 in the process. While Goodwood could be on his agenda, the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster may be the route he goes down. Owner Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager Angus Gold told At The Races: "I've only spoken to Richard briefly and he said Goodwood could be a possibility. "If we think he's good enough to run in the Dewhurst, though, then we'll work backwards from there. He'll only have a few more races this year. "I would guess that he'll be in the Goodwood race but we may wait for something like the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster to see whether he is good enough to run in the Group One." ================================ Hannon team cool on Nunthorpe bid Saturday's stunning Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Tiggy Wiggy could swerve next month's Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York and instead wait until October to take on her elders in the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp. Having filled the runner-up spot behind Irish raider Anthem Alexander in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, Richard Hannon's juvenile filly blitzed her Newbury rivals with an awesome display of speed in the hands of Richard Hughes. Connections initially appeared keen to let Tiggy Wiggy tackle some of Europe's top sprinters on the Knavesmire, but are now leaning towards running in the Lowther Stakes at the same meeting before a trip to Paris in the autumn. Speaking on his website, www.richardhannonracing.co.uk, the trainer said: "It gets better every time I see it and it would be exciting taking on the older horses, but we might wait until the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day. "They tell me that no two-year-old has won that race since Sigy in 1978, but Tiggy Wiggy enjoys a bit of cut in the ground and she would be more likely to get it there than at York. "That said, we have not ruled out the Ebor meeting, and even if we swerved the Nunthorpe, there is always the Lowther against her own age group." ======================================= Scudamore banned for course blunder Tom Scudamore was banned for 12 days by the C artmel stewards after taking the wrong course in the Champagne Louis Roederer Handicap Hurdle. The rider was partnering the Karen McLintock-trained Run Forest Run in the three-and-a-quarter-mile contest, a horse who was last seen pulling up over fences at Market Rasen a fortnight ago. Scudamore appeared to think he was riding over fences rather than hurdles as he angled his mount on to the chase course shortly after the start and jumped the first fence while the rest of the field took the hurdle track. The jockey quickly realised the error of his ways and pulled his mount up, but it was not enough to prevent him receiving a hefty suspension as the stewards found him guilty of taking the wrong course at a subsequent inquiry. Scudamore will be sidelined on August 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 21, 22, 23 and 25-28 inclusive. Favourite Galley Slave sadly suffered a fatal fall in the race, resulting in a delay for the rest of the card. ======================================= Faydhan team in no rush Connections of Faydhan, who is as short as 12-1 for next year's Qipco 2000 Guineas on the back of just one run, are in no rush to decide which path their exciting juvenile will take. The John Gosden-trained son of War Front created a deep impression when justifying cramped odds in a Haydock maiden at the beginning of the month and Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, has been pleased with his progress since. He told At The Races: "John said we'll look at a conditions race somewhere to get some more experience into him before deciding on whether to stay at six furlongs or to step him up to seven." He added: "If we decide he's fast enough then we'll go for the Gimcrack (York, August 23) and then possibly the Middle Park at Newmarket (October 17) at the end of the season. "John is pleased with him and he's always looked a nice horse. He was a beautiful yearling and a real sharp-looking type. "His joints were a little immature early and that's why we didn't see him any earlier than Haydock. We hope to get him back on the racecourse soon."
