16:40 Sunday 23rd February Racing Tips - 23/02/2014
Take The Mick isn't exactly one to take on at Towcester this afternoon at 8/13 and it does look as though the others are running for 2nd place. I'm interested by Nail 'M though and the jockey booking of Sam Twiston-Davies at 14/1. He made an encouraging second start over fences after falling first time out in a classy contest at Exeter and is now 4lb below his opening mark over hurdles. Heavy ground hasn't been a problem in the past and he should be suited by a decent test here. I don't think he'll beat the odds-on favourite but at the prices he is a solid bet and has massive claims for a place with the yard having sent out some decent priced places of late. Towcester 16.40 - Nail 'M 1pt e/w
Proud Times has been steadily creeping up the weights and is a full 15lb higher than his last hurdles win. This is a step up in trip in a weak race and I fancy him to continue progression at 11/4. Jack Doyle gets on well with him and the ground will be right up his street. There are others who interest but this boy should be a stronger favourite in my book. Cloudlings could be the biggest danger with Daryl Jacob back on top. He too is creeping up the weights though and may not be open to further progression as a 10 year old on what is not his favoured ground. Fontwell 16.50 - Proud Times 1pt win

Emma Lavelle is in no rush to commit her impressive Sidney Banks Memorial Novices' Hurdle winner Mosspark to the Cheltenham Festival. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Emma-Lavelle-2013_3022420.jpg?20131021115351](http://e0.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Emma-Lavelle-2013_3022420.jpg?20131021115351) Emma Lavelle: In no rush with Mosspark The strapping gelding stretched his unbeaten record under Rules to three with a dominant display in the Listed event at Huntingdon, easily accounting for Spirit Of Shankly and Carraig Mor. He holds an entry in the Albert Bartlett next month but Lavelle is not swaying in either direction just yet. "Mosspark is a lovely, big-framed horse who will make some chaser," she said. "He's come out of the race sound as a pound and I couldn't have been happier with him. "All options remain open at this stage, I don't want to say yes or no just yet. "The Albert Bartlett tends not to be the graveyard that many of the Festival novice events can be. Quite a lot of horses run in it and go on to make smashing chasers. I think that is because they go steady on the first circuit, not like in the RSA. "We had Le Bec finish sixth in it last year and he learned from it, and there have been plenty of other examples down the years. "Whether he goes or not it will be chasing next year for him."

Harry Fry has been delighted with the progress Vukovar is making ahead of his run in the JLT Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Harry-Fry_3022144.jpg?20131020175015](http://e1.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Harry-Fry_3022144.jpg?20131020175015) Harry Fry: Trains Vukovar The five-year-old arrived in England from France with a tall reputation having beaten Greatwood winner Dell' Arca before joining Fry. On his British debut he was beaten by Mr Mole but he was an impressive 21-length winner at Newbury subsequently. "Vukovar is doing nicely and is very much on target," said Fry. "He's a big, strong five-year-old so with him being so young we decided to give him a break after his win at Newbury. "He has done very nicely in the meantime. "I know he was beaten on his first run for us but that was over two miles and he won easily when we stepped him up a little last time. "In time I think he'll make a cracking staying chaser but this (two and a half miles) as far as he wants to be going at this stage of his career."

Brian Hamilton is looking forward to a second tilt at the Fox Hunters' Chase at Aintree in April with Warne after he got back to winning ways at Fairyhouse on Saturday. ![http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/horseracingsandown_3077876.jpg?20140204081512](http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/horseracingsandown_3077876.jpg?20140204081512) The 10-year-old won the same Fairyhouse contest 12 months ago before going on to finish fourth over the Grand National fences on Merseyside and Hamilton feels his charge is capable of improving on that fine effort this time around. While most of the leading hunter chasers are preparing for the Cheltenham equivalent, Warne will be kept fresh for Aintree and Hamilton believes his extra preparation time will be a big advantage. Hamilton said: "I was delighted with him and he's all set for Liverpool now. "We didn't even enter him for Cheltenham as the trip is too far for him. He could have gone there and finished maybe fifth or sixth, but then you blow your chances for Aintree. "He jumped well around Aintree last year, so we're keen to give it another go and see if he can finish a bit closer. "For whatever reason I think he's in better form this year than he was last year. "Last year he was well beaten in the race at Leopardstown before he won at Fairyhouse, but this time he had a good run to finish third before winning yesterday. "If all goes well between now and then he must go to Liverpool with a serious chance."

The first and second last fences on each circuit in all chase races are omitted due to wet ground.
3.10, third race
The Stewards gave permission for the parade to be cancelled due to wet ground.
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run to the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that MEISTER ECKHART (IRE), placed second, ridden by Robert Thornton, had interfered with CHRIS PEA GREEN, placed third, ridden by Joshua Moore. The Stewards found Thornton in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred right. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Sunday 9 March 2014.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Rhys Flint, the rider of the winner, KAYF MOSS, from the last hurdle. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Flint for 7 days as follows: Sunday 9, Monday 10, Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12, Thursday 13, Friday 14, Saturday 15 March 2014. Under Rule (B)54 the Stewards also fined the rider £500.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Joshua Moore, the rider of CHRIS PEA GREEN, placed third, from the second last. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Moore for 2 days as follows: Sunday 9 and Monday 10 March 2014.

Towcester, 23 February 2014
2.00, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, NEWTON THISTLE, ridden by Nico de Boinville and trained by Ben Pauling, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer, who stated that NEWTON THISTLE had been a big, backward gelding which had taken time to strengthen up and appeared to be suited by the heavy ground. Having heard the trainer’s evidence, the Stewards forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of NEWTON THISTLE could be reviewed. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
2.30, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, DROMBEG WEST, ridden by Andrew Tinkler and trained by Anna Brooks, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer, who stated that the mare appeared to be suited by the heavy ground and the stable had come back into form after having suffered from a virus. Having heard her evidence, they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of DROMBEG WEST could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered the mare to be routine tested.

======================================== 14:20 Monday 24th February Racing Tips - 24/02/2014
Rocky Stone has a great chance of following up his handicap debut win today at Musslburgh. Against him potentially is the drying ground and this could be a slightly better race than that handicap last time. It fell apart in testing conditions and he proved his staying credentials but looks short at 3/1 for a contest that could pan out differently on this sharper track on better ground. That being said, rain is forecast overnight and if the ground is soft he'll be hard to beat. Runswick Days should appreciate better ground than last time and a step up in trip looks certain to suit. The big price about Native Optimist is definitely interesting, but the yard is very much on the cold list.. They don't send out many runners though, and his form behind the favourite on handicap debut gives him a sniff on better ground today. Pick of the prices though is Solway Sam at 12/1 given he drops in class and is down to a career lowest handicap mark. An 11 year old against some unexposed types is not normally a solid bet but ground and trip are well in his favour this afternoon and he's been in decent form. A good clip from the front will give him his best chance. Musselburgh 14.20 - Solway Sam 1pt e/w
No bravery award for putting up Bellgrove at 6/1 in an 8 runner field on handicap debut but he does looks a sound bet. His 2nd last time out came over 2 and a half miles (13/8 favourite) and appeared a weakish race but he ultimately didn't stay and a drop beck to 2 miles should suit far better. He was previously 3rd over course and distance in a much stronger contest where the winner, Franciscan, went on to finish 4 and a half lengths behind Zamdy Man, and the 2nd, Clever Cookie, won a Class 2 handicap off 124 - easily. That would indicate that Bellgrove is fairly treated off 112 and I fancy he'll go off shorter than he is currently, as long as the rain stays away. Cool Sky could also be well treated but it's his yard as opposed to his form that is making him 11/4. Pass Muster is undoubtedly a worthy favourite but a risky proposition against a few handicap debutants. Musselburgh 15.20 - Bellgrove 1pt e/w
Selections today are banking on good ground…so I've ignored the forecast overnight rain (writing night before) and could pay the price. Nothing will want good ground more than Hawaii Klass and he is vulnerable to some younger improvers. Add to that the fact that he is 12lb higher than his last winning mark and he has a job on his hands, even at 14/1. What I like about him is a step up in trip on a hopefully decent surface given the way he was staying on over 2 and a half miles at Perth 3 starts ago. That race was run in a fast time and he was 2nd to a horse that went on to win off a 9lb higher mark. The amount of front runners is a concern but he'll want a reasonable pace as he didn't settle too well over shorter last time on heavy. The run should have taken the freshness out of him and it was a decent effort on ground that was too soft. Also, with a level stakes profit here of +97.50 over tha last 5 years, if anyone's going to spring a surprise this afternoon it's Donald Whillans. I do like Dreamy George at 11/2 and have backed accordingly but he's a little more obvious and priced about right. Musselburgh 15.50 - Hawaii Klass 1pt e/w
Cheltenham Ante post
Bet 365 have gone non-runner no bet for the festival and that's crucial at this stage when betting on the handicaps. The selection for the County Hurdle is very much ground dependent but if it does, miraculously, come up good then Montbazon will have a fighting chance. I'm surprised he is 33/1 NRNB with Bet 365 when he is no bigger with the rest of the firms and that will shorten accordingly if and when their NRNB allowance kicks in. The reason to go now is that this horse has been talked about. Ed Quigley (Longshot from RP) fancies him, Will Smith did a feature on him on RUK recently, and the yard is openly sweet on his chances. He is an intended runner and, so importantly, has form at Cheltenham. His last run before returning in the Betfair Hurdle came when 4th in the 2012 Supreme. The horses ahead of him were Cinders And Ashes, Trifolium and Darlan. All of them Grade 1 winners, the fact that Montbazon is turning up in a county hurdle off 140 should be noted. His run in the Betfair petered out but he travelled nicely and was given an easy time on heavy ground. He wants it good and it was an ideal prep race for a Cheltenham handicap. He's been left on the same mark but Alan King's number 2 said at Newbury that he 'is one of the best we have' and if he lines up on decent ground he'll be a 12/1 shot. County Hurdle - Montbazon 1pt e/w NRNB ================================================

THIS afternoon's fixture at Musselburgh is subject to an inspection at 8.30am following heavy overnight rain which has left areas of standing water. ================================== CHAMPION CHASE favourite Sprinter Sacre will not run at the Cheltenham Festival, trainer Nicky Henderson has told the Racing Post.
Henderson said Sprinter Sacre worked on Saturday with stablemate and Hennessy Gold Cup winner Triolo D'Alene but "is not showing the same brilliance as he did last season".
Sprinter Sacre was a brilliant 19-length winner of last season's Champion Chase and was an odds-on favourite to repeat his victory in this year's BetVictor-sponsored renewal.
The champion trainer told the Racing Post: "Sprinter's work over ten furlongs was all right, and with any other horse you'd think it was fine, but Sprinter is not showing the same brilliance as last season; he is just ten per cent short of that.
"Thankfully his heart is fine and there is no problem there."
Henderson added: "Having discussed options with [owners] Caroline and Raymond Mould, [work rider] Nico de Boinville, who has ridden him every morning for three seasons, and [vet] Celia Marr, who has been monitoring his heart, it was agreed that we should pull stumps for the time being.
"Now we will concentrate on getting Sprinter back next season to the same form he showed last season.
"The plan was to give Sprinter a racecourse gallop at the end of the week, and he still could, but at the back of our minds we know he's not performing to the level of which he is capable."
Sprinter Sacre, unbeaten over fences until his defeat at Kempton, was 4-5 favourite to win the BetVictor Champion Chase for a second time.
In revised betting, Sire De Grugy was promoted to 5-4 favouritism with Paddy Power from Arvika Ligeonniere at 9-2. ================================================== Ban heartbreak for Flint Rhys Flint has been hit with a seven-day ban for overuse of the whip on National Spirit winner Kayf Moss. The ban rules him out of any Cheltenham interest as he is banned from March 9-15 and he was also fined £100 under Rule (B)54. ===================================================

Officials from the British Horseracing Authority are to visit the yard of Philip Fenton in order to interview the trainer and conduct tests on horses in his care holding Cheltenham Festival entries. ![http://e1.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/last-instalment-full_3081799.jpg?20140211084802](http://e1.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/last-instalment-full_3081799.jpg?20140211084802) Last Instalment: Could be tested by BHA Fenton has been in the headlines in recent days after being charged with possessing unlicensed substances, including anabolic steroids, following a visit to his yard by the Department of Agriculture in January 2012, with a court case adjourned until next month. His horses on track for Cheltenham include former Champion Bumper winner Dunguib and Irish Hennessy hero Last Instalment, who is third-favourite for the Betfred Gold Cup. The BHA said that following consultation with the Irish Turf Club, it had been agreed that samples from Fenton's horses will be collected by the BHA and fast-track testing will take place at HFL Sport Science, Newmarket, with the results of the tests available next week. A statement from the BHA added that in addition to the sampling, Fenton will be interviewed and that the visit will form part of an ongoing process of gathering all relevant information regarding this issue. BHA chief executive Paul Bittar said: "Following the adjournment of the court case, we want to take steps which serve to uphold public confidence in the relevant races at the Cheltenham Festival, and the sport in general. The testing of the Fenton-trained horses will form a part of the decision making process as to how best to achieve this objective. "Any development or set of circumstances which brings the integrity of our sport into question is of considerable concern. The events of 2013 highlighted the need to increase the deterrent against the misuse of drugs and medication, and in particular anabolic steroids. Since then significant steps have been taken towards achieving a set of international minimum standards, with a number of jurisdictions adopting a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of steroids in racing. "Meanwhile in Britain we have announced a doubling in the scale of our testing-in-training programme and we are looking forward to publishing in the spring the findings of a report commissioned to establish standards in Britain which exceed the minimum international standard.

Sizing Europe will attempt to notch a piece of history by reclaiming the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase he last won in 2011. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/12/768x576/Sizing_3053400.jpg?20131217135212](http://e1.365dm.com/13/12/768x576/Sizing_3053400.jpg?20131217135212) Sizing Europe: Will attempt to regain his crown Now a 12-year-old, Sizing Europe has been victorious in 20 of his 40 races, amassing well over £1million in win and place prize-money. He was no match for Sprinter Sacre at the Festival last March but closed the gap to just over five lengths at Punchestown in April - although Sprinter Sacre had also won at Aintree in between. Henry de Bromhead's charge also holds an entry in the Ryanair Chase, but following Sprinter Sacre's defection the Queen Mother will once again be his target. De Bromhead tweeted: "We've decided to aim Sizing Europe at the Champion Chase. The race has obviously become more open since yesterday, so that's where we'll go."

French trainer Francois Doumen has called time on the racing career of Kasbah Bliss. ![http://e0.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/Kasbah-Bliss_3089731.jpg?20140224115546](http://e0.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/Kasbah-Bliss_3089731.jpg?20140224115546) Kasbah Bliss: Could take up three-day eventing A Group One winner on the Flat and a top-class performer over hurdles, there have not been many horses of the same ilk in recent times. His last win was his Prix du Cadran success in October 2011, yet as recently as August he was just a length behind Supreme Novices' Hurdle favourite Irving. "He took me around the world and had such enthusiasm, he was a happy horse," said Doumen. "He has been very special. So few horses were able to race at the level he did on the Flat and over hurdles. It used to happen in France just after the war but it is very rare now. "If he was still an entire I don't know if we'd have ever gone hurdling with him. "I'd have to say his Cadran win sticks out - winning any Group One is special - but his run at Sha Tin, when he was third in the Vase, was arguably his best as he was only beaten a neck and a head. "How he never won at Cheltenham that year (fourth behind Big Buck's in the 2009 Ladbrokes World Hurdle) I will never know. "Everything was perfect and I could not find anything that would make him run like that. That was the race which made me stop training jumpers and why he never ran over hurdles again. "There was just no explanation, so I decided to stick to the Flat, though I still miss it and will be at Cheltenham this year. "We will try to find a new home for him. My wife is very involved in the retraining of racehorses and I imagine he'll go three-day eventing." Now 12, Kasbah Bliss won over £1million in prize-money, winning 16 of his 68 races under both codes.

They noted the trainer’s explanation that BEN AKRAM (IRE) jumped more fluently on this occasion. They ordered BEN AKRAM (IRE) to be routine tested.
3.20, fourth race
The Stewards noted that TOM WADE (IRE), unplaced, had interfered with COOL BARANCA (GER), placed fourth, on the bend turning into the home straight, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

THREE vets have resigned from Godolphin as part of the reshuffle that has resulted in long-serving racing manager Simon Crisford leaving his role to become Sheikh Mohammed's global racing adviser. SIMON CRISFORD has resigned as racing manager of Godolphin.
His shock departure comes less than a fortnight after the publication of a report by Lord Stevens, which was critical of Godolphin and other parts of Sheikh Mohammed's equine operations but concluded that Mahmood Al Zarooni acted alone in the doping scandal that engulfed the stable last year.
Crisford, one of the most widely respected figures in British racing, said on Monday night: "Having dealt with the events of last year and seen the Lord Stevens inquiry through to its conclusion, I thought that this was a good moment to bring my time at Godolphin to a close.
"I had felt for a while that I would like a fresh challenge. I think the time is right for a new start for the stable and for me. Sheikh Mohammed has asked me to take on a new role as his global racing adviser. I am delighted to have accepted that position and I am very much looking forward to what will be an exciting new chapter for me." =====================================================
What's on Today's racing comes from Leicester, Lingfield and Catterick. There are no weather problems at any of the meetings so get set if you fancy a day at the races. =================================================
Festival winner Salut Flo dies Salut Flo, winner of the Byrne Group Plate at the Cheltenham Festival in 2012, has died at the age of nine after a severe recurrence of colic. Colic in horses is defined as abdominal pain, but it is a clinical sign rather than a diagnosis. The term colic can encompass all forms of gastrointestinal conditions which cause pain as well as other causes of abdominal pain not involving the gastrointestinal tract. The most common forms of colic are gastrointestinal in nature and are most often related to colonic disturbance. There are a variety of different causes of colic, some of which can prove fatal without surgical intervention. Colic surgery is usually an expensive procedure as it is major abdominal surgery, often with intensive aftercare. Among domesticated horses, colic is the leading cause of premature death. The incidence of colic in the general horse population has been estimated between 10 and 11 percent on an annual basis. It is important that any person who owns or works with horses be able to recognize the signs of colic and determine whether or not a veterinarian should be called. ================================================ BHA to visit Philip Fenton's yard THE steroids controversy surrounding trainer Philip Fenton took a dramatic turn on Monday when the BHA revealed it is sending a drug-testing team to his County Tipperary stable. ======================================

Multiple Group One-winning jockey Johnny Murtagh has announced he is to retire from race-riding to concentrate on his training career. ![http://e2.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Royal-Diamond-jockey-Johnny-Murtagh_3021247.jpg?20131019152046](http://e2.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Royal-Diamond-jockey-Johnny-Murtagh_3021247.jpg?20131019152046) Johnny Murtagh: Announced retirement from saddle Crowned Irish champion jockey on five occasions, the 43-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest riders of the modern era and partnered countless big-race winners in all corners of the globe. Murtagh told Press Association Sport: "The training side of things is getting bigger all the time and I wasn't happy giving the riding 50 per cent and the training 50 per cent. "It's the right time to call it a day with the riding and put everything into the training side of things." During a stellar career Murtagh rode over 100 Group One winners at home and abroad, and was successful in each of the five Irish Classics at least once, riding four Irish Derby winners and six Irish Oaks winners, including last year's French-trained Oaks heroine Chicquita. He also rode three winners of the Epsom Derby in Sinndar (2000), High Chaparral (2002) and Motivator and was successful in the 2000 Guineas twice aboard the brilliant Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Henrythenavigator (2008). Murtagh's other British Classic victory came with a brilliant front-running ride aboard 2011 Oaks scorer Dancing Rain. The jockey also had a great affinity with Royal Ascot, taking the leading rider award at the summer showpiece meeting for a fifth time last year. His numerous Ascot winners include five triumphs in the Gold Cup, guiding the remarkable Yeats to two of his four victories in the two-and-a-half-mile feature. "I've done extremely well and when you look at the list of horses I've ridden, there have been some brilliant horses," said Murtagh "It would be unfair to pick out one, but there were a number of special days. "My first Derby win aboard Sinndar was obviously a huge thing and then Yeats was an incredible horse to be associated with. "I suppose winning on Sole Power in the King's Stand last year was massive for me as well. Just the way the race went and getting up on the line - you know when you get it right. "Riding and training Royal Diamond to win on Champions Day last year at Ascot (in the Long Distance Cup). That was something very special as well." Murtagh enjoyed great associations with some of the biggest stables in the sport, riding as stable jockey for the likes of John Oxx and Aidan O'Brien. The rider also had a successful spell with Sir Michael Stoute, while Jeremy Noseda, James Fanshawe and Motivator's trainer Michael Bell were others to call upon his services. "I was very lucky to ride for some great people. I got along with them all and still do. It's been brilliant," said the jockey. "When you are riding you can take all the big winners for granted, but when you sit back and think about it, I've been very lucky. "I'm coming up 44 this year and my first Group One was on Manntari for Mr Oxx in 1993 (National Stakes). Someone texted me earlier saying I had 105 Group One winners, but my wife thinks it's 107. "I've been all over the world riding, I've met some lovely people and it's been a great experience. "I didn't ride a horse until I was 15 and it's been fantastic, but it's now time to move on to the next chapter in my life." In May of last year Murtagh took out his training licence, taking over the reins from Tommy Carmody at Fox Covert Stables in County Kildare. Murtagh confirmed he would continue riding for the rest of that year and enjoyed a fantastic campaign in 2013, with Chicquita and Sole Power among his five Group One winners. He also partnered German star Novellist to victory in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July and rode his last Group One winner on Tom Hogan's Gordon Lord Byron in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock in September. His final big-race winner was aptly aboard Royal Diamond on Champions Day. Murtagh said: "We have 45 horses in training at the moment, including 20 two-year-olds and we have a few new owners. "I have the same expectations as when I was riding - the standards are still the same. "If we get a bit of luck and a good horse comes along, we'll get there."

Leading racing figures have paid tribute to Johnny Murtagh following his retirement from race riding. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/12/768x576/Johnny-Murtagh_3049395.jpg?20131209204221](http://e0.365dm.com/13/12/768x576/Johnny-Murtagh_3049395.jpg?20131209204221) Johnny Murtagh: Brought a 26-year riding career to a close Murtagh, 43, rode plenty of big winners for Eddie Lynam, including on Sole Power in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, and his last ride was on the same horse in the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin in December. "He's been a great jockey. It's a big loss to me, but we'll have to get with it," said the County Meath handler. "I was talking to him on Monday and wished him a happy retirement. He's going to be a good trainer now, so we will have to compete against him. "He gave Sole Power a fantastic ride in the King's Stand. It was best summed up by James Willoughby that day. He said Johnny sold lengths when they were expensive and bought them when they were cheap. He gave him an extremely good ride that day. "He's ridden a lot of big winners for me over the years. His last ride was on Sole Power in Hong Kong when they finished second in a Group One. "A top man, a very good jockey and I wish him well in his retirement." Newmarket trainer Michael Bell feels indebted to Murtagh for his contribution as a rider, especially when they teamed up to land the Derby at Epsom in 2005 with Motivator. "He was a very gifted jockey. I'll be forever grateful to him for his input - not only on the racecourse but his advice having ridden work which played a huge part in Motivator's three-year-old career," he said. "It was an amazing day when we won the Derby. From my career point of view that obviously represents a high. "It was very hard for him to combine both jobs (riding and training), so I'm sure it was the sensible thing to do." Frankie Dettori also paid tribute to his great friend and colleague. He said: "Johnny is probably one of the best judges of pace I've ever come across and one of the most hard working and talented jockeys I've ever ridden against." I'm genuinely upset that he will no longer be in the weighing room when I go in there." Another weighing-room colleague, Shane Kelly, has known Murtagh from his days at the apprentice jockeys' school in Ireland. Kelly told At The Races: "I've known him since I've started and he was 100 per cent brilliant to me when I started and still is. You can ring him up any time and ask him about A, B or C. "He's top class and obviously in the last couple of years he's carried on proving that. "Wonderful ability, superb rider, such determination and so single-minded. He knew what he had to do with his weight. We all have to go through the grind, but there's a few, him, Kevin Manning, they have to work hard - well, they had to work hard! I'm sure he'll make a success of his training career." Weighing-room colleagues in action at Lingfield paid their tributes to the top jockey. Adam Kirby told At The Races: "He was brilliant to watch and he was very tactically aware. "It's a shame he's given it up but fair play to him, he'll be taking training very seriously from now on and I wish him the best of luck." Jimmy Quinn said: "It didn't matter where he was - Royal Ascot, Longchamp, the Curragh or Gowran or a smaller track. "He was very professional and very positive no matter what he was riding and he was great to follow in a race. I think he'll be the same as a trainer. He's always been focused." Shane Kelly said: "Words can't really describe him. He was an absolutely fantastic jockey. "He had wonderful ability, and was just a superb rider. He's always been good on the big day and it came to shine in the last couple of years. "His determination and single mindedness in that he knew what to do in a race." One of Ireland's leading jump jockeys, Barry Geraghty, added his tribute on Twitter. "Best of luck in retirement to @johnnymurtagh top class fella world class jockey and looks like he's going to be as good as a trainer," he tweeted.

The Hollinwell could aim to provide trainer Eugene O'Sullivan with a second victory in the Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival next month. ![http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/Cheltenham-Festival-view_3089722.jpg?20140224113903](http://e2.365dm.com/14/02/768x576/Cheltenham-Festival-view_3089722.jpg?20140224113903) Cheltenham Festival: Foxhunter bid likely for The Hollinwell It is 23 years since the County Cork-based trainer claimed the prestigious event with Lovely Citizen and he has had a number of horses, including 2008 third Arctic Times, run well in the race since. The Hollinwell, who made two previous visits to the Cheltenham Festival when trained by Ferdy Murphy, has been one of Ireland's leading point-to-point performers since joining O'Sullivan last year, winning four times from nine starts. On each occasion he has been ridden by the trainer's 17-year-old son, Eoin, including when bolting up at Kildorrery last Sunday, and the teenager will keep the ride at Cheltenham if the 11-year-old gelding makes the cut. O'Sullivan snr said: "He's a lovely horse and he does everything very, very easily. "It's difficult to know how good he is as we don't do a lot with him at home. He has run plenty and he just goes round the roads during the week. "Last Sunday was our local point-to-point, so it means a lot to us to have winners there and we were delighted. "We've entered him in the Foxhunter. Whether he'll get in or not, I don't know, but if he does we'd be keen to go. "We're taking Scorpiancer over anyway to the sales on the Thursday of Cheltenham. "He won very easily first time out at Kildorrey last weekend, so hopefully there'll be a good bit of interest in him. If we're taking him over, The Hollinwell might as well join him in the box. "Eoin has had five winners since he started off in September and four of those have been on The Hollinwell. "He came in nearly crying the first day he rode him as he knew he should have won and then he would have won the second day, but he got unseated at the last. "Another day he got beaten as the horse's bloods were wrong. I shouldn't have run him that day, so he should have been nearly unbeaten. "He hasn't come up against a really good horse yet, but the two things we have in our favour is that he's winning very easily all the time and I'm pretty sure he'll be better on better ground. "Winning at Cheltenham so early in your career isn't a good thing in some ways, as you think you're going to do it again straight away. "It's 23 years ago now and I just hope this horse can go to Cheltenham and be competitive

Leicester, 25 February 2014
2.10, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference at approximately half a furlong out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that LOUGH COI (IRE), placed second, ridden by Charlie Deutsch, had interfered with the winner, CARLI KING (IRE), ridden by Tom Messenger. They found the interference was accidental.

Catterick Bridge, 25 February 2014
2.50, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the start of Race 2 and the fall of Mrs V Sollitt, the rider of CANADIAN DREAMER (IRE). They interviewed the rider and the Starters. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the start, the Stewards were satisfied that the gelding had ducked to its right and unseated the rider as the tape was released.
4.50, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of FROSTY DAWN, ridden by Gavin Sheehan and trained by Mike Sowersby, which finished seventh, beaten some 46½ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer, and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to get the mare jumping and obtain the best possible place. He added that he asked FROSTY DAWN for an effort in the back straight, where she made a mistake at the third last hurdle and the final hurdle. He further added that the mare was unsuited by the soft ground. The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied with the ride given to FROSTY DAWN. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)49 and guilty of failing to report that FROSTY DAWN was unsuited by the going. They fined him £140.
5.20, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jake Greenall, the rider of the winner, LANDMARQUE, from turning into the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Greenall for 2 days as follows: Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March 2014.

15:50 Wednesday 26th February Racing Tips - 26/02/2014
I was going to put up Monetary Fund at Bangor but he's very short for a horse that hasn't won for a year. Against him today could be a stern test on heavy ground as there are a few that like to go forward. He eases in class and has dropped to a viable mark but conditions may not be ideal. By Montjeu, heavy ground should be no issue but his best form has come on better ground. I'm against the favourite Sir Mangan who looks about right off this mark on handicap debut and would rather have the 16/1 about top-weight and outsider of the field Alpha Victor. Clearly happier over hurdles than fences, he is back to just 1lb higher than his last winning mark and he looks a stayer that will relish conditions. I'm worried he will battle it out for the lead and that won't help any front runner int these conditions but if they do ease off up top then he has claims at a decent price and at a track that will certainly suit. Bangor 15.30 - Alpha Victor 1pt e/w
Vif Argent has shown next to nothing since coming over from France and he's had 4 chances over varying trips in varying conditions. In short, he's a horrid sort of bet…so probably worth getting stuck into in a trappy little race. Almost all the others have stamina to prove at the trip in this ground and a few like to race prominently too. Opera Og would come off 2nd best in a battle with himself while I'm not sure Miss Tenacious wants this far. I like Time To Think but that mark is creeping up and Roll The Dice is also on a lofty mark for a seasonal reappearance he seemed to need last term. The Pipe horse is the outsider at 13/2 but he's only 5 and is tried in first time blinkers…which can't make him any worse. His last start in France suggested a step up to this sort of trip was required and, by Dom Alco, the same sire as Dell' Arca, conditions should be no trouble at all. Wincanton 15.20 - Vif Argent 1pt e/w
Fascino Rustico still has a bit to do to win today, especially giving lively threat Midnight Thunder 16lb. I have them both around 10lb well in on the basis of their efforts over course and distance last time and both have positives and negatives for different reasons. The Tizzard horse battled well after a mistake 2 out but had something of a hard race and we technically know more about him as a result. Fascino Rustico looked like he would saunter to victory before taking a heavy fall at that same fence 2 out and returns here just 11 days later. If all is well with him he is the one to beat and 11/8 looks generous given his lofty Cheltenham entries and all round potential. Had he not fallen, he may have won by 15 lengths and be racing off a mark nearer 140… The Tizzard stable form is just a slight concern too - though it really does look to be between these. Wincanton 15.50 - Fascino Rustico 3pt win

3.10, third race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of GENEROUS JUNE (IRE), trained by Paddy Butler, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined him £140.
26/02/2014
Bangor on Dee, 26 February 2014
The British Horseracing Authority gave permission for Fence 4 (the first fence in the 3 mile chase) to be omitted in all chases due to unsuitable ground conditions.

Wincanton, 26 February 2014
3.20, third race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, VIF ARGENT (FR), ridden by Tom Scudamore, and trained by David Pipe, compared with its previous run at Chepstow, on 28 December 2013, where the gelding was pulled up. They noted the trainer’s explanation that VIF ARGENT (FR) appreciated the drop in class and fitting of first time blinkers. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
4.20, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BE BOP BORU (IRE), ridden by Richard Johnson, and trained by Tim Vaughan, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that this was the gelding’s first run in a handicap and the yard is regaining form after a lean spell. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of BE BOP BORU (IRE) could be reviewed.

Kempton Park, 26 February 2014
5.20, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that KARAM ALBAARI (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Frederik Tylicki, had interfered with FUJIN DANCER (FR), unplaced, ridden by Tom Eaves. The Stewards found Tylicki in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he drifted left. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
5.50, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching two furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that TREFNANT (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Tim Clark, had interfered with DOUNEEDAHAND, placed fourth, ridden by Liam Keniry, who in turn interfered with WEDGEWOOD ESTATES, placed third, ridden by David Probert, who in turn interfered with THE BOSS OF ME, unplaced, ridden by Tom Eaves. The Stewards found Clark in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift left. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 March 2014.
7.20, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of HURRICANE HARRY, ridden by Andrea Atzeni and trained by William Knight, placed third, beaten 9½ lengths, which after an initial effort appeared to be restrained in the final furlong before making a second effort on the run to the line in order to keep third place. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer who confirmed the gelding was uncomfortable behind post-race. The rider reported at scales that the gelding had lost his action behind. He then stated that his instructions were to go forward from a wide draw and to ride the race as it unfolded. He explained that he felt the gelding go wrong behind and that he felt it prudent to pull the horse up. However feeling that he could still maintain third place, he continued to ride the horse out. The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted the trainer’s representative’s explanation and found Atzeni in breach of Rule (D) 45.3 in that he continued in the race on a horse that appeared to have gone lame. They suspended him for 10 days as follows: Wednesday 12, Thursday 13, Friday 14, Saturday 15, Monday 17, Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19, Thursday 20, Friday 21 and Saturday 22 March 2014.

========================================== 15:00 Thursday 27th February Racing Tips - 27/02/2014
There's a couple that like to dominate in the mares' hurdle at Ludlow and, with the forecast rain, this could be real stamina sapper. I'm loath to go with something that is yet to try 3 miles but Molly's A Diva at 7/1 keeps pinging off the page as a mare crying out for further. One of the top bumper mares last season, that form is yet to really translate over hurdles but shouldn't be underestimated. She is a heavy ground performer and her first win over hurdles coincided nicely with the yard's return to form. Last time was a hot race but she ultimately looked slow and a step up in trip should help. A mark of 115 can be left behind in the future. Still Believing could be the biggest danger but she's on the short side in a decent little handicap. I worry about a real stamina test for the classy performers that are Dancingtilmidnight and Midnight Cataria. Ludlow 15.00 - Molly's A Diva 1pt e/w
It's tricky when you are waiting for a horse to run, he turns up somewhere, and you then fancy something else. Roalco De Farges shaped really well last time before fading after nearly 2 years off and will surely come on for the run. He wasn't given a hard time and the yard are worth keeping on side of given a superb season. The concern at 3/1 is that he may not be the horse he was and the run last time was perhaps not enough to convince otherwise. At a slightly bigger price is the younger Firebird Flyer at 11/2. He is improving and will relish conditions. A course and distance winner, I like it that he'll race prominently, sometimes a plus here, and the form of his run last time in the West Wales National looks solid, especially given he was 1lb out of the handicap. A drop in trip and good gallop from the front should suit him and he's still relatively unexposed over fences. Ludlow 15.30 - Firebird Flyer 1pt win
I'm backing 2 in the 6 furlong tapeta handicap at Meydan and can't really split them as far as value goes. I fancy Merhee should be favourite ahead of Medicean Man given trip and surface this afternoon. The latter looks more at home on turf and, though pedigree suggests he will handle tapeta, this is over a trip that he hasn't won at for 4 years. Add to that the removal of favoured jockey Harry Bentley and I think he's too short at 5/2, though his mark is far lower today than it would be on turf. Merhee has a genius on top and looked as though he'd improve for his Meydan debut when 2nd over course and distance. A drop back to 5 furlongs on turf didn't suit but I think this will and he'll be tough to beat at 9/2. Pick of the prices is Racy and he has the 2nd best jockey out here for company in Silvetsre De Sousa. He's eased to a competitive mark form debut out here and, another by by Medicean, there's every reason to think he will handle the surface. His first try at it saw him away slowly and he was never competitive but he is worth a step back up in trip from his last 2 starts. Hopefully he'll break better today and get a strong early gallop to chase because he looks too big at 14/1. Meydan 15.15 - Racy 1pt e/w
Remember when Gale Force Ten won the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in a time close to a course record? He looked fantastic and like he'd go on to win a Group 1. What was extra impressive was the way he battled back to beat subsequent Group 3 winner and Group 2 second Montitridge after being headed. He is winless since and looks a shadow of his former self. However, he looks every bit the miler and yet tackled the July Cup over 6 furlongs after Ascot. He then had a couple of runs in France on ground softer than ideal before being sold to Mike De Kock's yard. His first Meydan effort came over 7 furlongs when dropped out in a slowly run race, followed by a far better run over 9 furlongs last time carrying top weight in handicap company. With 6lb less on his back today, I fancy this Irish Guineas runner-up has a better shot than 12/1 would suggest. A quick ground mile looks best and yet this is the first time he's had such an opportunity since that Guineas run. He raced prominently last time and hopefully similar tactics will be employed as there's not all that much pace on show today. Everything else has a chance bar the rank outsider but nothing else appeals at the prices, while Mshawish looks a likely winner. Meydan 17.00 - Gale Force Ten 1pt e/w
Putting up a short priced favourite ridden by Barzalona at Meydan can go one way or the other. He either looks brilliant, or bloody useless, and it's hard to predict which. He is a class jockey of course, but I'd rather he showed a little more consistency. The ride he gave Winterlude last time was one of his poorer efforts, often seen when he's over confident on a horse that should win. Today he is blessed by being drawn in stall 1, and that should help the horse race prominently. We can then see Barzalona at this best, on the rail with some daylight in front of him. Add to this a nice tow into the race from stablemate Tha'Ir, who is drawn next to him, and we have ourselves something close to a banker at 9/4. Vasily will also help set the fractions and Winterlude wants a proper test, even over a furlong further than last time. I'm wary of Farrier who won a maiden here on debut and today goes the furtherst he's been. If they don't go hell for leather up top then he's a danger at a decent price. Meydan 17.35 - Winterlude 3pt win ============================================

Ruby Walsh on the future “Whereas 34, 35 was the norm [for jockeys retiring] it now seems to be 40 so hopefully I’ve a few more years in me," said the 34-year-old. "If I was to train horses I would train Flat horses, it’s where the money is."

GIANTOFAMAN will attempt to give trainer Dessie Hughes a third consecutive win in Grade 2 Boylesports Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle (4.05) at Thurles, which he won with Lyreen Legend in 2012 and Bright New Dawn a year ago.
The six-year-old defeated Urano, who lines up against him on Thursday, over 2m at Thurles earlier in the season and appeared not to stay 2m6f on his latest outing. He drops down two furlongs to contest the 2m4f Grade 2.
Hughes said: "It looks quite a strong race but he's a course winner and I think he'll go well.
"The ground will be more testing than he has run on for a while, but I think he should handle it."
Urano, representing Willie Mullins, is the only one of the seven runners with entries at the Cheltenham Festival, where he holds engagements in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle, Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, Coral Cup and Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.
Today's pointer Staff Sergeant has a 60 per cent strike-rate at Southwell (3-5) and has never finished outside the first three at the track. He runs in the 1m4f handicap (3.20).
