Views from connections ahead of the Betfair Ascot Chase on Saturday. ![http://e1.365dm.com/14/02/640/Medermit_3081975.jpg?20140211144516](http://e1.365dm.com/14/02/640/Medermit_3081975.jpg?20140211144516) Medermit: Returns at Ascot Trainer Alan King admits it is not ideal for Medermit to have his first run for nearly two years on heavy ground in the Betfair Ascot Chase on Saturday. The popular grey has not been seen since finishing a close fourth in the Betfred Bowl at the Grand National meeting of 2012. He met with a setback at the start of the following season and his return this campaign was delayed slightly by a pulled muscle which prevented him from running at Cheltenham's meeting on New Year's Day. Now a 10-year-old, Medermit has been second in a Supreme Novices' Hurdle and fourth in an Arkle in his pomp and holds an entry in the Gold Cup next month. King is, however, just keen to get him back on a racetrack. "He's obviously been off a very long time," said the Barbury Castle handler. "He's in good order, though, and we need to get a run into him if we've got any plans of sending him to Cheltenham. "I would have preferred better ground to bring him back on but we've just got no option. "If we want a run it will have to be on this ground." Another much-discussed chaser making a return in the Grade One is Hunt Ball. He sprang to prominence in the 2011-12 season when with Keiran Burke, winning seven races which culminated in a keynote success at the Cheltenham Festival. Things were tougher the following campaign, but he performed with credit at a much loftier level before his owner, Anthony Knott, decided to sell. While the plan was for him to go through the sales ring, he was bought privately to go to America. But that venture did not work and he has ended up with champion trainer Nicky Henderson. "I love Hunt Ball - he's a gorgeous person and looks great," said Henderson. "I've got to break cover with him sooner or later. "He has been in America and had to do quarantine so didn't really start to get going until after Christmas." Hunt Ball has been entered in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham and the Crabbie's Grand National, while Henderson also runs Riverside Theatre, a two-times winner of this race. The hot favourite is the Philip Hobbs-trained Captain Chris, second to Cue Card in this race 12 months ago when he made a late mistake. A former winner of the Arkle, it is no secret that he much prefers going right-handed and is probably stretched by the trip in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in which he finished sixth last year. Narrowly beaten on his return in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon, when attempting to give 10lb to Riverside Theatre, he looked imperious at Kempton last time out, strolling to a 23-length win over a solid yardstick in Champion Court. "I'm very pleased with him and Ascot is ideal, as it's right-handed and he's always inclined to go right - two-miles-six is his perfect trip, probably," Hobbs told At The Races. "He won very nicely the last day and has been in good form since. "We've always liked him very much and he's been a great horse to have." Cloudy Too beat Tap Night on his seasonal return at Carlisle before trainer Sue Smith felt he failed to get home in the Hennessy after running well for a long way. The eight-year-old was an impressive 10-length winner last time out in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby. "He's very well and is going down there in good form," said Smith. "It could be just the right trip for him, especially in heavy ground. I hope he's going to run a nice race. "He didn't appear to get him at Newbury, it was gluey old ground that day and it just found him out. "Over two-six and with that pull up the hill it should be just about right, he liked the stiff finish at Carlisle." Paul Nicholls runs Rolling Aces, a beaten odd-on favourite last time out at Sandown. "He had a good season as a novice and was just beaten in the Racing Plus Chase," Nicholls told Betfair. "He started the season very well winning at Down Royal and then he went to Sandown for an intermediate chase over three miles and I don't think he really got the trip. "The middle distance is fine for him so he'll go to Ascot and then be aimed for the Ryanair." Officials at all three of Britain's jumps meetings on Saturday are showing a fighting spirit they believe will be rewarded despite the exceptionally wet weather. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/08/768x576/haydock1_2985059.jpg?20130810085921](http://e1.365dm.com/13/08/768x576/haydock1_2985059.jpg?20130810085921) Haydock set to cope with overnight rain No inspection is planned at either Ascot and Haydock, while Wincanton, where an all-hurdle card has been organised in an attempt to beat the rain, is sticking to its 7.30am precautionary inspection. Though the going eased to heavy at Ascot after further rain on Friday, clerk of the course Chris Stickels does not feel the programme, featuring the Betfair Ascot Chase, is in danger. "I've changed the ground to heavy following 10 millimetres of rain today," he said. "No inspection is planned. We are expecting further showers and gales tomorrow, but the gales should die down by midday and if the forecast is correct we don't anticipate any problems." The Betfred Grand National Trial is the centrepiece at Haydock where the track was expected to cope with more rain on Friday night. "We are due a dollop of rain but we expect to race," said clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright. "We might get a total of 11 millimetres today and another six tomorrow. It will be heavy." Barry Johnson, clerk of the course at Wincanton, considers they have a "sporting chance" of seeing their card, headlined by the Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle, through. "We're surviving, we're hanging on by the skin of our teeth," he said. "We've had 19mm of rain today. We are raceable, we have some standing water, but less than we had at 1.30pm. "We are due between five and 10mm overnight with gale-force winds. It's down to what we get overnight. "I think we've got a really good sporting chance. We've got this far. With the strong wind you only need an hour of dryness and the strong wind squeezes the ground out again. "Fingers crossed we'll give it every go and see where we are in the morning." Ireland is not escaping the weather, with heavy rain jeopardising Saturday's meeting at Gowran, featuring the Red Mills Trial Hurdle, with officials calling an 8am inspection amid standing water on the track. Groundsman Eddie Scally said: "It's the heavy rain we've been having, but we're hoping the track can dry out. We think we've a good chance of racing, but we're going to inspect in the morning and see." No problems are foreseen for the meeting on Sunday at Navan featuring three Grade Two races, although the going is heavy. "At the moment we are extremely confident," said racing manager Darren Lawlor. "We've had just over 10mm of rain today. Nothing of any consequence is forecast, maybe 2mm to 3mm overnight with a relatively dry day tomorrow and dry on Sunday. "We would have raced today and we don't envisage any problems for Sunday. "It will be testing ground. We haven't had as much rain up at our end of the country and we can comfortably take what is forecast." Monday's jumps meeting at Southwell is under threat with an inspection being called for 8am on Saturday. The going was described on Friday afternoon as heavy, waterlogged in places, but clerk of the course Roderick Duncan is not without hope. "With a bit of adjustment and omitting a couple of fences we could probably have raced today and I want to give it every chance," he said. "We'll have a look to see what rain we get overnight. The forecast for Saturday is deteriorating a bit which is disconcerting and the forecast for Monday is not very good either. "It will be just a case of looking in the morning, seeing where we are with the forecast as well as what rain we've had overnight." Taunton is to stage an all-hurdle card on Tuesday after further rain left the chase course waterlogged.

Champagne Fever will head to the Cheltenham Festival without another run after he was not declared for the Flyingbolt Novice Chase at Navan on Sunday. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/03/768x576/champagne-fever-cheltenham-full_2913646.jpg?20130312143740](http://e0.365dm.com/13/03/768x576/champagne-fever-cheltenham-full_2913646.jpg?20130312143740) Champagne Fever: Won't run at Navan on Sunday Willie Mullins is not 100% happy with the Rich Ricci-owned grey, with Ireland's champion trainer now likely to finalise his preparation with another racecourse gallop. The dual Festival winner was also a late withdrawal from the Dr PJ Moriarty Chase last weekend and is likely to compete in the Arkle, for which he is ante-post favourite, off the back of just two runs over fences, one of which having ended in defeat. "I'm just not quite happy with him," said Mullins. "I've decided to wait and he'll probably go to Cheltenham now without another run. "We're leaning towards the Arkle with him but we have not made a final decision as yet. "I'd imagine we'll give him a racecourse gallop somewhere in the meantime." Dessie Hughes trains two of the five declared runners for the Flyingbolt, with the highly-regarded Bright New Dawn joined by Some Tikket. Bright New Dawn was second to Mullins' Djakadam over two miles and five furlongs at Leopardstown last month and drops down in trip to two miles and a furlong. Some Tikket won his last race at Gowran. Shrapnel, owned, like Bright New Dawn, by Gigginstown House Stud, has been declared by Gordon Elliott. Irish Thistle and Mallowney complete the field.

Lingfield Park, 14 February 2014
The Stewards gave permission for the runners to be mounted in the pre-parade ring for all races because the parade ring was flooded.
2.30, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Richard Kingscote, the rider of the winner BERTIE BLU BOY, had appeared not to keep straight from the stalls. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start they found him in breach of Rule (B)45.2 and suspended him for 1 day as follows: Friday 28 February 2014.
14/02/2014
Fakenham, 14 February 2014
1.15, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, POWERTAKEOFF (IRE), ridden by Paddy Brennan and trained by Henry Oliver, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding had benefited from a wind operation since his previous run. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of POWERTAKEOFF (IRE) could be reviewed.

Wolverhampton, 14 February 2014
5.05, first race
Scott Dixon, the trainer of BISCUITEER declared sheepskin cheek pieces in error. Under Schedule (B)4 5.6 the Stewards gave permission for a hood and blinkers combination to be substituted and fined him £140.
The Stewards noted that MAHON FALLS, unplaced, had interfered with COUNTESS LUPUS (IRE), unplaced, who in turn interfered with MIGHTY FORCE (IRE), unplaced, on leaving the stalls, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
5.35, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Adam Beschizza, the rider of BLAZING DESERT, placed second, from inside the one and a half furlong marker. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Beschizza for 2 days as follows: Friday 28 February and Saturday 1 March 2014.
7.05, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of DANSILI DUTCH (IRE), ridden by Josh Doyle and trained by David O’Meara, which raced in a detached last after being slowly away before being asked for an effort approaching the three furlong marker to finish seventh, beaten some 15 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop the mare out early on and ensure that she relaxed, on this her first start over the distance. However, after missing the break the mare commenced to pull hard through the early and middle stages and consequently failed to stay the one mile four furlong trip. The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and stated that having missed the break she was satisfied with the manner in which DANSILI DUTCH (IRE) was ridden. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations. The Stewards ordered DANSILI DUTCH (IRE) to be routine tested.
7.35 and 8.05, sixth and seventh race
The Stewards gave permission for the stalls to be moved approximately two bays to the left from their advertised position on the outside. This was done for safety reasons to avoid a small area of water which had developed on the outside of the track a few yards from the stalls.
8.05, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the fall of Martin Harley, the rider of MAAHIR, shortly after the start. They interviewed Harley. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the incident the Stewards found that the fall was caused by the colt commencing to buck which resulted in Harley being dislodged. Being satisfied that no other horse or rider was involved, the Stewards took no further action.

The Stewards considered the running of LIKE A DIAMOND (IRE), ridden by Tom Queally and trained by Evan Williams, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance.
7.05, fifth race
Robert Winston, the rider of DAZZLING VALENTINE, unplaced, reported that the mare ran too free to post.
8.05, seventh race

=============================================== 14:40 Saturday 15th February Racing Tips - 15/02/2014
If Haydock does go ahead we are likely to see some defectors from the Limited Handicap Chase at Ascot and the fewer runners the better for Highland Lodge. Emma Lavelle said at Newbury that he is definitely to head for the Grand National providing he runs as expect today, and this is a very realistic challenge. His form tailed off last term but that was very much in keeping with the rest of the yard. He flew around Wincanton on return before running a super race in the Hennessy and pulling up in the Welsh National. That was a result of setting a fierce pace on heavy ground but such tactics will suit him back over 3 miles this afternoon. He goes well fresh, on any ground and is so well treated with the likes of Our Father (who he smashed at Cheltenham the December before last) and Houblon Des Obeaux that he must be backed at 5/1 off a mark of 139. The form of his Newbury novice chase 3rd when staying on really couldn't be any better…Harry Topper, Benefficient, the aforementioned Houblon Des Obeaux, and the yard are an entirely different proposition this season. Biggest danger could be Night Alliance who is a course and distance winner and will love conditions. Ascot 14.40 - Highland Lodge 1pt win
Hopefully Haydock makes it this afternoon as they have a cracker of a card. The Grand National trial is well worth getting stuck into and I can't find a better bet at the northern track than Merry King. Currently 8/1, his most disappointing effort to date came over this sort of trip in the Welsh National but the yard were noticeably out of form at the time and I fancy this track suits him a little better. He's 1lb lower for that run and for his solid effort when staying on in the Hennessy. Tony McCoy on top has to be a big plus and, after the way he was staying on over 3 miles 1 here last time, a step back up to marathon distances looks sure to suit. Hawkes Point deserves plenty of respect but Merry King is far better off at the weights and a bigger price. He does look difficult to win with on the face of it but consistency in big field handicaps is well worth respecting and he looks incredibly well treated off just 2lb higher than for his reappearance this season. The other I think is overpriced, though I fear he'll find something too good, is Rigadin de Beauchene at 16/1. He was 2nd in this last year off the same mark and, though well beaten by Well Refreshed, he finished well clear of the remainder. This track clearly suits his running style and a bit of company for the lead will be no bad thing as he wants a real slog. Ground will be no trouble and he showed up well first time out last term so there's every reason to expect a big run. Haydock 14.55 - Rigadin de Beauchene 1pt e/w Haydock 14.55 - Merry King 1pt e/w
If Two Rockers does line up over 2 and a half miles at Ascot as opposed to 3 miles at Haydock then he has a fantastic chance. He'll love the ground, is a nice price, and I don't know why I'm not tipping him. Like Minded looks set for a place at 10/1 but will likely find one too good and that could well be something lesser exposed like Kaylif Aramis, Heath Hunter and Lough Kent. It's tricky to back the latter on UK debut but this should be perfect for Kaylif Aramis who will love conditions as well as a slight drop in trip from last time. Plenty fancied him for the Lanzarote but this is more his trip for now and Ryan Hatch is well worth his claim as we saw at the weekend just gone. 11/1 is a nice price and more appealing than that of the favourite in an open handicap, though he does look off a tasty mark. It may also be worth a speculative punt on Seymour Eric at 33/1. He has been in no sort of form but there again neither was the yard in December and January. He ran well in November when Martin Keighley had a better strike rate and the team have just sent out a couple of February winners. He wears blinkers for the first time and, if taken on for the lead by the Pipe horse, I fancy him to win a staying battle if back on song. Conditions will certainly help and he is 5lb lower than his last handicap win. Ascot 15.15 - Kaylif Aramis 1pt e/w Ascot 15.15 - Seymour Eric 1pt e/w
The Kingwell Hurdle is the best for some time given the presence of Melodic Rendezvous and it's Jeremy Scott's 8 year old that makes most appeal given the likely heavy ground. He put in a really good time against Far West over course and distance and his turn of foot in these conditions makes him very hard to live with. Zakandar will no doubt be sent forward by Daryl Jacob to make this a real test but he's yet to look quite the same horse this season, though he's bumped into some monsters, and I can see Melodic Rendezvous being too good. His win at Haydock was so impressive and he was 2nd favourite when the market opened. Now 5/4, he's a much more realistic price but still the one to be with when the mud is flying. Wincanton 15.35 - Melodic Rendezvous 2pt win
The Betfair Ascot Chase throws up plenty of successful favourites and it's tricky to find reasons to oppose Captain Chris. Evens is smack on what he should be and worth taking but there is a standout runner that looks too big. Cloudy Too is going to have to step up on what he has shown to date but the ground should really play to his strengths this afternoon. He will stay plenty further but conditions will make this a decent test and if the odd error that creeps into Captain Chris' repertoire is on show today then Sue Smith's 8 year old has a better chance than his 9/1 price would suggest. I hope all 8 run meaning we get 3 places and I can't see Riverside Theatre finishing amongst them. He is a dual winner of this but his best years look to be behind him and he was lucky to win at Huntingdon on penultimate start. The ground is far from ideal and Rolling Aces may be the other to challenge a strong favourite. Ascot 15.50 - Cloudy Too 1pt e/w ===================================================

He's up to having a run now and, although he is in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan on Sunday, this is the race we want to run in. We only switched to hurdles last season because he got a fall over fences and when he won we just kept going with him. We’ll get this run out of the way then think about Cheltenham and the future. RACING goes ahead at Wincanton and Gowran Park on Saturday after both tracks passed morning inspections. ============================================= Ascot forecast The course (@ascotinsider) has tweeted: "Track update: Current going is heavy following 14mm rain yesterday. Today’s forecast is for gales, easing by midday and blustery showers." =============================================== Hawkes Point at Haydock Hawkes Point is a non-runner at Ascot today because he heads to Haydock for his first preference, the Grand National Trial. =============================================== Southwell switch The track was due to host a jumps meeting on Monday, but clerk of the course Roderick Duncan has just abandoned that. A plan for an all-weather card for jumps horse was programmed and that has been enacted. ================================================== On the box Four races from Ascot, three from Haydock and Wincanton's Kingwell Hurdle will be live on Channel 4 today. ==================================================== SCOOP6 RACES 1:45 HAY Betfred "Goals Galore" Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle Cl2 2m CH4 2:05 ASC RSA Trial Novices´ Chase (Registered as Reynoldstown Novices´ Chase) (Grade 2) (£8K FieldSize Bonus) Cl1 3m CH4 2:40 ASC Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Chase (Limited Handicap) (Listed Race) Cl1 3m CH4 2:55 HAY Betfred Grand National Trial (Handicap Chase) (Grade 3) Cl1 3m5f CH4 3:15 ASC Great British Drama Handicap Hurdle Cl2 2m3f110y CH4 3:30 HAY Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Series Qualifier) Cl2 3m ======================================================

NOTEBOOK. We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
Newbury's 'Super Saturday' always attracts some high-class horses and a number of connections are keen to test out the Cheltenham credentials of their runners, with just a few weeks to go before the big Festival at Prestbury Park. The opening novice hurdle provided the Paul Nicholls-trained CALIPTO with a per- fect pre-Cheltenham run and this son of Califet, who is making a name for himself as a decent sire of jumpers in France, will undoubtedly be one of the favourites for the Triumph Hurdle. It was the horse that fin- ished third that caught the eye though and although Charles Egerton does not have many horses in training, SEEDLING could prove to be the yard's flag bearer this sea- son. Flat bred, Seedling had won a couple of bumpers last season and has taken well to hurdles. Having finished second on his previous start at this track at the Hennessy meeting, we knew that he liked the gallop- ing nature of the track and he put in a very good round of jumping. There is no doubt that Seedling needs better ground and he will be seen to much better effect this Spring, when the ground dries up. He has a touch of class and can make his mark in handicap company over the next couple of months, off a very workable mark of 130. In the next race, Tony McCoy was at his brilliant best to get up on the useful UPSWING. Second-placed RYDON PYNES was the one that caught the eye on his handicap debut and despite being put up 3lb for this excellent effort, he can go very close next time. Rydon Pynes is still rela- tively inexperienced, but he seems to have bags of stamina and will undoubtedly give trainer Martin Hill plenty to shout about going forward. The day's feature race, the Betfair Hurdle, has a rich history and the roll of honour proves that any horse that wins this race will be worth following for the rest of the season and beyond. Nigel Twiston-Davies's SPLASH OF GINGE is highly regarded and finished second to the very useful IRVING in a Grade 2 at Ascot on his previous start. Raw and with limitless potential, Splash Of Ginge could keep on improving and will be interesting in a race such as the County Hurdle. Fourth-placed CHELTENIAN ran a very good race for a horse with so little experi- ence. Philip Hobbs likes this horse a lot and he could well make the line up for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival. Runner up, DELL' ARCA looks decent value at 25/1 for that race, as he's a horse who relishes big fields and will travel well off a strong pace. ==================================================
STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
Channel 4's racing coverage comes from Ascot and Haydock this weekend and there will be plenty of top-class action at these Grade 1 tracks. Races at either venue are hard to win and so it will pay to follow both horses and trainers that are in good form. Always a happy hunting ground for the McCain family, Haydock is one of Donald's favourite tracks and he has a terrific record there. His strike-rate of 24% is impressive and teamed with the fact that his stable jockey, Jason Maguire, is also leading jockey at the track, with a strike-rate of 25%, the Bankhouse Stables team is to be feared with any of their runners. ACROSS THE BAY looks their best chance of a big race win. Paul Nicholls, despite living almost two hundred miles from Haydock, also boasts an exceptional strike-rate at the track. His 24% strike-rate, the same as Donald McCain's, is all the more im- pressive, as he has significantly fewer runners there. Nicholls will only send horses to Haydock if he feels that they have a very good chance and HAWKES POINT looks to have a great chance in the Grade 3 Grand National Trial. They might not be enjoying the best of seasons, but the formidable partner- ship of Nicky Henderson and Barry Geraghty has a great record at Ascot. Leading trainer and jockey respectively, the Seven Barrows team should always be given the greatest respect when sending runners to the Berkshire track. Third best trainer at Ascot is Alan King and with his horses now in much better form, he is also one to watch this weekend. Haydock's Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle is one of the best staying hurdles of the season and has been won by some very good horses in the past. Francois Doumen's Kasbah Bliss claimed back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2009 and last year's victor, Across The Bay, is likely to line up again. Paul Nicholls could prove the fly in the ointment if he decides to send the game and high-class CELESTIAL HALO to Haydock en route to the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The last ten runnings of the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices' Chase at Ascot has been won by horses aged six or seven. Of the thirteen current entries, only seven fit this criteria and the best of these is probably Oliver Sherwood's MANY CLOUDS . =============================================
Race Ratings 2.05 Ascot - Saturday, 15 February RSA Trial (registered as the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase) Grade 2 - 3m
133FP According To Trev 21 8 Nigel Twiston-Davies A horse with plenty of ability, According To Trev has lost his way just recently, having made hay in the summer when the racing was less com- petitive. By Accordian, he ideally wants decent ground and the heavy fall he took at Newbury in December looked to have left its mark at Doncaster last time, when he was pulled up. There's probably a decent race in him, but probably not until the Spring. RATING: 90 0-2312 Ardkilly Witness 14 8 Dr Richard Newland This horse has made a decent start to his 'chas- ing career and is pretty consistent. He looks to be improving too and having landed his first race over the bigger obstacles at Wincanton on Boxing Day, he ran another fine race at Sandown last time to finish second to the Venetia Williams-trained Relax on his handicap debut. Better ground would suit. RATING: 94 F2211 Baby Shine 31 8 Lucy Wadham This very attractive Kings Theatre mare is in great form at present and should be respected. She finished second to the useful Une Artiste at Huntingdon back in December and then went one better at Towcester and Newbury most recently. This represents a big step-up in class, but Baby Shine has the right attitude and the expected soft ground should not prove a hindrance. RATING 95 0-1011 Ely Brown 14 9 Charlie Longsdon Charlie Longsdon has made no secret of the re- gard in which he holds this horse. Sixth in last season's Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, this horse has proved a revelation since being sent over fences. The winner of a Grade 2 at Wetherby last time, Ely Brown is cur- rently one of the favourites for the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the trainer is keen to get another run into him before mid-March. He handles soft ground and has stamina in abundance. RATING: 99 11P6-1 Gevrey Chambertin 34 6 David Pipe This likeable horse has not yet jumped a fence in public, but he is highly thought of by the Pipe team and is capable of springing a surprise. A very game winner at Haydock last time in a Grade 3 over the fixed brush hurdles, Gevrey Chambertin is a typical son of Dom Alco, being grey and a sound jumper who revels in the mud. Although this is a horse with plenty of ability, this is a very tough race to be introduced to fences in. RATING: 96 114-2P O'Faolains Boy 29 7 Rebecca Curtis Rebecca Curtis has not enjoyed the best of sea- sons and although this horse clearly has ability, O'Faolains Boy does not look good enough to land this race. Pulled up last time in a Grade 2 at Ascot, despite his second to Easter Day at Ascot in December, he has a lot to prove. RATING: 93 6-F023 Sixty Something 50 8 Paul Webber Yet to win over fences, Sixty Something will have his work cut out against these rivals. His form isn't bad overall, but it will take a massive leap of improvement for him to be involved here. He will like the ground. RATING: 92 R3363 Spike Mac 7 9 Richard Harper This lightly-raced nine-year-old is still a maiden and this looks a very ambitious entry. RATING: 80 6-221P The Italian Yob 21 6 Nick Williams Nick Williams knows how to ready a horse for the big occasion and this horse has a fair amount of ability. His best form leaves him a bit short here, and the fact that he was pulled up when sent off favourite at Cheltenham last time, is a concern. RATING: 95 2-1323 Third Intention 51 7 Colin Tizzard One of the most experienced 'chasers in the field, Third Intention's match practice could prove invaluable here. Probably high-class but not top-class, he was beaten fair and square by Annacotty at Kempton on Boxing Day, but he is likely to run his race. Better ground would help his cause. RATING: 97 105-1U Top Of The Range 13 7 Nicky Henderson A winner at this course back in November, Top Of The Range unseated his rider at Musselburgh last time, but he should like the soft going and although untried at this sort of trip over fences, it could be right up his street. RATING: 96 11252 Whats Happening 39 7 Tom George Tom George welcomed a big-race winner at Newbury last weekend and his yard may be coming back to form. His form behind Benvolio and Easter Day leave him with a bit to find here although his jumping was much better last time at Leicester, when he finished second to the useful Edmund Kean. RATING: 97 2P-121 Many Clouds 50 7 Oliver Sherwood Oliver Sherwood does well with his jumpers and Many Clouds has always been one of his favourites. Owned by Trevor Hemmings, it is no surprise that this son of Cloudings has plenty of stamina and jumps soundly. He finished second to the useful Black Thunder at Haydock back in November but looked much more impressive at Wetherby last time, when he went one better. He's a leading player here. RATING: 100 ===============================================

Irish Oaks winner Chicquita will be trained next season by Aidan O'Brien, according to the Irish Field. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/07/768x576/Chicquita-Alain-de-Royer-Dupre_2975986.jpg?20130720191549](http://e0.365dm.com/13/07/768x576/Chicquita-Alain-de-Royer-Dupre_2975986.jpg?20130720191549) Chicquita: Reportedly joining Aidan O'Brien Ireland's racing and equestrian weekly newspaper claims the former Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained filly has joined the Ballydoyle ranks, which will give O'Brien no less than four individual Classic winners with which to go to war next term. Chicquita would join the likes of St Leger hero Leading Light, Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Magician, Epsom Derby victor Ruler Of The World and top American recruit Verrazano. The four-year-old was sold for 6million euro at Goffs last November, with bloodstock agents Peter and Ross Doyle signing for the daughter of Montjeu. It has not been announced who is the new owner of the filly.

Willie Mullins is counting on the right Zaidpour to turn up at Navan as Ireland's champion trainer chases a third consecutive Ladbrokes Boyne Hurdle victory. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/12/640/Zaidpour-Leopardstown-FULL_3058341.jpg?20131228154433](http://e1.365dm.com/13/12/640/Zaidpour-Leopardstown-FULL_3058341.jpg?20131228154433) Zaidpour: Mullins' Boyne hope At Leopardstown over Christmas, Zaidpour picked up the second Grade One of his career but was disappointing on his most recent outing on this very course in last month's Galmoy Hurdle. "He has the ability to win this race but some days he just doesn't want to show it," said Mullins, who has taken the two-mile-five-furlong Grade Two recently with On His Own and Mourad. "I've no idea what happened last time, he just wasn't in the mood. "If he returns to his previous form then you'd think he might be the one to beat." Among those he has to beat, though, are Dunguib, who made a pleasing reappearance from an absence of nearly three years at Naas. Dessie Hughes expects to resurrect Minsk's career over fences next term after four unsuccessful attempts. "We'll leave the chasing to next season with him," said Hughes. "He could have been better over them and he'll stay over hurdles now until after Punchestown. "Hopefully he should be a nice staying novice chaser next season. He's still young enough. "It looks a very tough race on heavy ground on Sunday." Tim Doyle expects Mallowney to put up a bold show in the Flyingbolt Novice Chase at Navan on Sunday as he bids to make amends for a Leopardstown tumble. ![http://e1.365dm.com/14/01/640/mallowney-full_3061997.jpg?20140105133704](http://e1.365dm.com/14/01/640/mallowney-full_3061997.jpg?20140105133704) Mallowney: Fancied at Navan A 20-1 shot for the Arkle Novice Chase three weeks ago, Mallowney was in the process of running a big race when he came down at the second-last fence when in contention in third place as Trifolium landed the spoils. "He seems to be in good form. He was still full of running when he came down at the second-last in the Arkle at Leopardstown," said the County Tipperary trainer. "It is hard to know where he would have finished that day, but he was very much in contention. "He loves this soft ground and we'll keep him going while he has his conditions." Dessie Hughes has had his hand forced in going against the grain and running two horses in this five-strong line-up in Bright New Dawn and Some Tikket. The County Kildare trainer felt Bright New Dawn had plenty on his plate when he was second to Djakadam in the Killiney Novice Chase at Leopardstown last month. "He's in good form. He's trying the trip for the first time, but on heavy ground it should be far enough," said Hughes. "He was trying to give Djakadam 11lb last time at Leopardstown which wouldn't have been easy." Some Tikket put two poor efforts behind him when successful in a beginners' chase at Gowran last month. "He just wouldn't have been 100 per cent on a couple of his runs and we were disappointed, but he was good at Gowran," said Hughes. "Races like this don't come along that often and I'm afraid we have to run them against each other which I don't like doing."

2.40, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Noel Fehily, the rider of TEAFORTHREE (IRE), placed second, from approaching the second last. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Fehily for 2 days as follows: Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March 2014.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Charlie Poste, the rider of the winner, RESTLESS HARRY, from approaching the third last. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Poste for 2 days as follows: Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March 2014.
15/02/2014
Haydock Park, 15 February 2014
The British Horseracing Authority gave permission for fence five, the first fence in the back straight, to be omitted due to the ground conditions.
1.45, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, ABRACADABRA SIVOLA (FR), ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies and trained by Nick Williams, compared with its previous run at Haydock Park on 18 January 2014, where the gelding finished fifth of six beaten 33 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding was suited by being allowed an uncontested lead in this race. They ordered ABRACADABRA SIVOLA (FR) to be routine tested.
2.55, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Conor Ring, the rider of WYCHWOODS BROOK, which fell at the third last fence, had continued in the race when his horse appeared to be exhausted. They interviewed the rider, the trainer and received a report from the Veterinary Officer. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)45.3 and suspended him for 10 days as follows: Saturday 1, Sunday 2, Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, Thursday 6, Friday 7, Saturday 8, Sunday 9 and Monday 10 March 2014.
15/02/2014
Wincanton, 15 February 2014
3.35, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that there was interference between the winner, MELODIC RENDEZVOUS, ridden by Nick Scholfield and ZARDANDAR (IRE), placed second, ridden by Daryl Jacob. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved either horse’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
4.45, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by David Crosse, the rider of BENBECULA, unplaced, from turning into the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Crosse for 4 days as follows: Saturday 1, Sunday 2, Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 March 2013.
15/02/2014
Lingfield Park, 15 February 2014
4.00, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into two possible cases of interference. In the first instance approaching the furlong marker between WATERSMEET, placed second, ridden by Joe Fanning, and the winner JAAHIEZ (USA) ridden by Andrea Atzeni. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they were satisfied that no interference had taken place. In the second incident, on the run to the line, they found that WATERSMEET, placed second, ridden by Joe Fanning, had interfered with the winner JAAHIEZ (USA), ridden by Andrea Atzeni. The Stewards found Fanning in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that allowed his mount to drift right. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Saturday 1 March 2014.
4.30, sixth race
The Stewards noted that RUN IT TWICE (IRE), placed fourth, and CLUB HOUSE (IRE), placed third, had interfered with ALICE’S DANCER (IRE), unplaced, inside the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved RUN IT TWICE (IRE)’s or CLUB HOUSE (IRE)’s placing.
5.00, seventh race
The Stewards noted that EX EX, unplaced, had interfered with HAADEETH, unplaced, who in turn interfered with MULTITASK, unplaced, who in turn interfered with COMPTON PRINCE, unplaced, approaching the final furlong, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

14:50 Sunday 16th February Racing Tips - 16/02/2014
New Year's Eve looks very short on the face of it at Market Rasen this afternoon but this is a field full of runners with a bit to prove. He is likely the most talented and, if headgear has made the difference for his 2nd handicap start, he will be tough to beat. He does look risky at shorter than 2/1 though and it may be worth taking him on with something like Kodicil or Experimentalist. The former won over course and distance on penultimate start and then bounced next time when running to avoid a penalty. He makes debut for new connections but the slight concern is that he wants to dominate and there a plenty of others with the same intentions, the favourite included. Experimentalist is a non-runner now but the other who is likely to be suited by a strong pace is Rumble Of Thunder at 4/1. He was a winner over a furlong further last time on soft ground off 4lb higher but is still on a mark 2lb lower than his win at Aintree a few years ago. He's only an 8 year old and further progression remains a possibility. He's a battler and, whilst he was perhaps a bit disappointing over course and distance back in July before unseating, this is easier and conditions far more suitable. Market Rasen 14.50 - Rumble Of Thunder 1pt win

Tony Martin has not ruled out a crack at the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Chase with Benefficient. ![http://e0.365dm.com/13/03/768x576/benefficient-connections-full_2914862.jpg?20130314142735](http://e0.365dm.com/13/03/768x576/benefficient-connections-full_2914862.jpg?20130314142735) Connections of Benefficient celebrate at last year's Festival Outright favourite with some firms for the Ryanair Chase, should the ground still be soft or heavy at Cheltenham for the Festival then a tilt at the two-mile championship could be the direction connections decide to take. Winner of the Jewson Novices' Chase at the meeting last March (now the JLT), Benefficient has only had two runs this season, when fourth over three miles in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby before winning the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase over an extended two miles at Christmas, beating Hidden Cyclone and Arvika Ligeonniere. "He'll go straight to the Festival," said Martin. "He's still in the Champion Chase, but the Ryanair is favourite at this stage. "We'll just see what the declarations are like and see what the ground is like nearer the time. If it's soft I wouldn't rule out the Champion Chase. "I suppose a lot depends on Sprinter Sacre and if he runs in the Queen Mother, but if it was soft or heavy we'd have to seriously think about it. "It was a really good run the last day and he won at the Festival last year, so we know he likes the place."

Charlie Longsdon will not know the full extent of Ely Brown's injury for the next couple of days. ![http://e1.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Ely-Brown-Aintree-2013-SL_3025784.jpg?20131027144059](http://e1.365dm.com/13/10/768x576/Ely-Brown-Aintree-2013-SL_3025784.jpg?20131027144059) Ely Brown (left): Good news from the vets et The Towton Novices' Chase winner struck into himself when running in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot on Saturday and Longsdon hopes the injury stays clear of infection. Writing on his website, Longsdon said: "He struck into himself badly on his pastern and had to go back to the Lambourn vets. "The worry with deep wounds anywhere on the back of a leg is that it might cut into the tendon sheath or other important structures of the leg. "I had a phone call late last night from the vets saying luckily that was not the case, and we now have to be very careful about possible infection. "Hopefully nothing bad will come to light when his leg is scanned tomorrow and that we can keep the infection away and then he might be able to come home at the end of the week." It was not all bad news for Longsdon who finally broke his duck at Ascot in the closing bumper with A Vos Garde but Cheltenham may come too soon for him. "Having now won a couple of bumpers, he will now have to be stepped up in class. With Cheltenham only just over three weeks away, that might come a bit too soon for him, but we will have to look at all the options," said Longsdon. Meanwhile, Longsdon also had news of Killala Quay, who he feels may outrun his odds in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Winner of three of his five starts over timber, he landed a Grade Two event at Sandown in December in good style. Well fancied for a similar race at Warwick last month against Deputy Dan and Rathvinden, he never looked happy and was pulled up some way out, but Longsdon has offered up an excuse for that display. "He was a sick horse after Warwick, you can put a line straight through that," said Longsdon. "He's back in good form now and will go straight to Cheltenham. "I think he'll probably run in the Neptune. I'm quite happy for him to just keep tipping quietly along with no fanfare. I think he'll run well

Connections of leading Stan James Champion Hurdle hope Our Conor are hoping a strong pace will help him turn the tables on reigning champion Hurricane Fly. ![http://e2.365dm.com/14/01/768x576/hurricane-fly-overhauls-our-conor-full_3073001.jpg?20140126151440](http://e2.365dm.com/14/01/768x576/hurricane-fly-overhauls-our-conor-full_3073001.jpg?20140126151440) Our Conor (left) is just caught by Hurricane Fly The Dessie Hughes-trained five-year-old was the most impressive winner of the Triumph Hurdle for many a year last season and part of the reason he looked so good was the strong pace throughout, according to his new owner this season, Barry Connell. Hughes won two Champion Hurdles with Hardy Eustace, and Our Conor is expected to peak on the second Tuesday in March. Having been beaten by Hurricane Fly in both of his outings this season, Connell feels the way the races in Ireland have been run have been against his star and is eagerly looking forward to Cheltenham having closed the gap from nearly six lengths to just over one in less than a month. "He looks the one horse who is capable of improving again," said Connell. "It turned into a sprint in the Irish Champion and that didn't really suit him. "It's all systems go now, we're very happy with him and he couldn't be with a better man in Dessie. "Last season he improved and improved with every run and that is proving to be the case again, he was much closer to Hurricane Fly second time. "What we need is a true-run race and, being a Champion Hurdle, 99 times out of 100 you get that."

Ivan Grozny is not certain to take his chance in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham next month.
The Graham Wylie-owned juvenile was placed in a Group Three in France on the Flat and carried a tall home reputation into his hurdling debut at Leopardstown over Christmas.
He was narrowly beaten by Aidan O'Brien's Plinth but made no mistake at Naas three weeks later when winning by 12 lengths, and was all the rage for Cheltenham afterwards. Sent off the odds-on favourite for a Grade One at Leopardstown last week, he was a well-beaten fourth, with trainer Willie Mullins unable to offer up any excuses.
He said: "All my horses that ran at Leopardstown came back absolutely fine.
"Ivan Grozny was perfectly all right when he got home, that's maybe just as good as he is.
"He ran basically to the same form as his debut when he was just beaten by Plinth yet this time they were third and fourth, well beaten.
"We'll have to see now if he runs in the Triumph."

Racing operates on trust. Not of the naive kind. Most punters are predisposed to believing the worst in everyday stuff. But a basic bulwark must be a presumption that the game is fundamentally clean in terms of medication, a presumption scheduled to be held up to the light this week with a leading trainer due to appear in court charged with possession of unlicensed animal remedies. This comes on the heels of a case last October when retired veterinary inspector John Hughes pleaded guilty to possession of unauthorised medicines, including an anabolic steroid. The case was later dismissed “on its merits” when Hughes made a donation to charity. During a raid on Hughes’s property by Gardai and customs officials, a list of trainer’s names and contact details was discovered. Any smug dismissal of such reports as media sensationalism now looks thin, as should any official assumption that any possibly new single case might be the end of the matter. It may well be, but nobody in authority can be allowed to presume so. Neither can any ‘lone gunman’ theories ever be allowed to conveniently present a cop-out from thorough and effective investigation. Whatever the outcome of this week’s case, and potentially its impact on every level of the industry is huge, it is vital to place it in the context of an integrity culture in Ireland that is a reflection of the consistently low priority that has been placed on how racing is policed in this country. It is a sad reality that people push the boundaries in terms of what they can get away with. An inch here becomes a foot there. It may not reflect well on us as a species but the impulse is always there to push for an edge, sometimes an illegal one. And if cheats feel the odds are in their favour when it comes to getting away with it, they’ll push even harder. That is an assumption that those charged with policing the industry can never afford to ignore. But far from a proactive approach to protecting racing’s reputation, the integrity services have been continually cut. The Turf Club’s integrity budget, funded by HRI, was cut by almost a quarter in the five years up to 2013. At a time when it could be argued the motivation to cheat increased in proportion to the impact of the economic downturn, racing’s top-brass let it be known in stark concrete financial terms how importantly they took what should be the priceless issue of integrity. As in any organisation the tone comes from the top. If the clear message from on high is to keep things chugging along, no rocking the boat, maintain the appearance of probity, all on an ever-tightening budget, then those at the front line are hardly encouraged to put their own necks on the chopping block. And crucially, even if those at the coal-face were hopeless idealists, there still wouldn’t be anything like enough of them. Recently we had statistical evidence from the Turf Club of a jump in testing of horses ‘in-training,’ up to 283 for last year, following a late-surge on the back of the Hughes case, and the steroid debacle in Britain. But for the whole of 2012, there were just seventy. Only twenty one tests were done in 2009. All the recently taken tests were negative, a welcome result that doesn’t hide how testing doesn’t take place at all out-of-training, a glaring lack considering some banned substances can leave a horse’s system in a matter of days. The need to track horses both in and out of training is obvious. So is the need to test them. But that requires boots on the ground, and boots on the ground need to be paid, and encouraged to believe what they do is important and substantial, not some knee-jerk, cosmetic, fire-fighting reaction to embarrassment. For far too long, Irish racing’s attitude to integrity has been shamelessly devoted to the cosmetic rather than the substantial, primarily illustrated by the shameful lack of financial resources given over to the maintenance of public confidence and trust in the integrity of the industry. This has been obvious for years. The diversity of interests sucking off the government teat have parked the issue so far to the side, it’s almost out of the car-park. You would think that maintenance of public confidence would, if nothing else, be in racing’s self-interest. But that has been largely ignored until we’re now at a stage where there could be no knowing the long-term impact of a problem that may well have been nipped in the bud if the will was there. Maybe this case will be shown to be all a big mistake. Maybe it won’t. Maybe it will be the whole of an unfortunate medication iceberg. But no one can assume anything. What’s important, and always has been, is that any problem is faced up to realistically and honestly, whatever the scale, and not in the sort of PR coated show-and-tell farce the BHA shamefully indulged in over Mahmood Al Zarooni. That was a startling illustration of the dangers of one body both promoting and policing a sport. Integrity is different, has to be seen to be different, and has to be seen as vital. And in Ireland it has to become regarded as such. Because once trust goes, who knows the cost involved in trying to get it back.

16:45 Monday 17th February Racing Tips - 17/02/2014
Not the greatest action today from a betting perspective but the feature at Wolves chucks up a couple of opportunities. Dangerous Age sits at the bottom of the weights and is dramatically up in class for this. She is very progressive though and this really isn't the strongest race for its class. Plenty still have to prove themselves in this company while those that have have been duly punished. She was unfortunate last time but its perhaps a little surprising to see her as short as 9/2. All 3 Robert Cowell runners have realistic claims at double figure prices but 2 came from a race last time which I just don't think was strong enough form wise and the other (Ubetterbegood) is a risk after his latest effort. Forest Edge is another risky one but he is a proven top class performer and his penalty for winning at Lingfield in December looked lenient. His run next up was in a very strong race, far better than today, and he proved to still be in form when winning last time out in a conditions race. He made all that day but doesn't have to and will have a strong pace to aim at today back over the shortest distance. A new jockey and tendency to prat around leaving the stalls make far from a certainty but that is justified by his odds of 8/1. Wolverhampton 16.45 - Forest Edge 1pt e/w
The World Hurdle is potentially the most fascinating contest this year at the festival, probably 2nd only to the Champion Hurdle. That race has the old guard Hurricane Fly, the new boy The New One (aka the winner) and the maybe girl Annie Power. So to the World Hurdle. Big Buck's' participation is stomach tinglingly exciting. At Fishers Cross and, more so, More Of That add the new kids on the block intrigue. And Annie Power…well, she could win whatever she turns up in. Looking at the race three weeks before the festival, there are only 2 horses I want to back. One of them is a horse I don't think can possibly win if the current top four line up. Celestial Halo was a touch disappointing last time in the Rendlesham but it was no secret he was in need of the run after missing the Long Walk Hurdle with a foot infection. Nicholls can get a horse ready but this one had missed 3 weeks work and was far from racing fit, and it showed. What this does is push his 16/1 antepost, which I would argue was too short against the top 4, out to 33/1. So a horse that was 2nd in this last year to the best staying hurdler of 2013 is a massive price for this year's renewal. His festival record reads 12492 and his other runs at Cheltenham have seen him finish 2nd, 3rd and 3rd, and I can see him bagging a place this year. Don't forget how good he looked at Newbury when strolling home on soft ground in a time 1 second slow, a better time than Big Buck's ever posted. I would rather have the 33/1 about this Stewart runner, especially with most firms going non-runner no bet, than the 9/4 about the other. Big Buck's is an 11 year old and I hope he wins, but there's every chance he is just not as good as he used to be and he will have to be the first horse of a double figure age to win this since Crimson Embers in 1986 (so too the 10 year old Celestial Halo).
So after tipping a horse that I don't think can win, I'll now put up one that may not run. At Fishers Cross looked back to form in the Cleeve and that coincides with his yard sending out some winners of late. His run also put into doubt the presence of More Of That as JP McManus may not run both. However, most firms are NRNB and, if he lines up, I really think More of That will face the sternest challenge from Annie Power, and her presence is not guaranteed. My gut feeling is that she will run in this and it's the unbeaten 6 year olds that shold be most respected. Annie Power is 3/1 and I'm not sure how much that will change. But the 7/1 about Jonjo O'Neill's runner will shorten dramatically if Annie Power runs on the Tuesday and, more likely, if JP runs both his horses and AP picks the younger of the 2. I hear McCoy said to Jason Maguire (before beating Twelve Roses at Wetherby) something along the lines of 'you'll not beat me, this was our Albert Barlett horse last year'. A setback put an end to those hopes but this horse is class and I just fancy AP, with the issues At Fishers Cross has had jumping this term, will go More Of That. The champion jockey has stated in 2 recent articles that he faces a very tricky choice between the 2 and the idea of both the McManus horses running is looking increasingly possible. World Hurdle - Celestial Halo 1pt e/w NRNB World Hurdle - More Of That 1pt win NRNB
