LESS than a week after plans were revealed to replace the turf Flat course at Newcastle with an all-weather track, Catterick emerged on Thursday as another candidate to host racing on an artificial surface in the north.

Although plans are not as advanced as they are at Newcastle, where Arena Racing Company hopes a planning application would be lodged by January 31 with racing on the new surface due to start possibly as early as 2015, Catterick have been formulating their plans for nearly two years.

Like Newcastle, the management at Catterick would replace the turf Flat course with an all-weather surface and retain jumps racing. And, like Newcastle, the course would be floodlit.

John Sanderson, chief executive of International Racecourse Management which runs Catterick, said: "We started out on this road about two years ago because we feel it is a good business opportunity and it probably ticks a few boxes for the industry in that it provides an economical all-weather option in the north of England.

"The racecourse is extremely close to the A1 and fairly accessible and pretty close to the Malton and Middleham training centres.

"As far as we are concerned it is do-able and viable. Our plan would be to replace the turf Flat course with a floodlit all-weather course and we would retain jumping."

Henry Daly is having a super season but his star performer of last term was a bit of a disappointment last time out. Quentin Collonges is a gutsy little performer and expect him to try and make all here at 8/1. He'll need to set a decent gallop if this drop back to 3 miles 1 and a half furlongs is to pay off but the ground is in his favour and he travelled so well here last time before fading turning from home after a bump or two in running. Jake Greenall is riding very well this season and has a super record for the trainer. He takes off a useful 3lb and has won on the horse before. I also really like Prince Of Pirates who was a little disappointing here in the Kim Muir but has the champ back on and their record together is fearsome. His Kempton win in penultimate start would suggest that he's well treated off only 3lb higher and the Henderson yard is picking up.
Cheltenham 14.10 - Quentin Collonges 1pt e/w

Destroyer Deployed has his jumping issues but he is better here on what is Cheltenham's easier jumping track. He's not something you'd be too confident about at the festival but his record here reads 232 (the first of those was at the festival but in the Champion Bumper so he didn't have any obstacles). Tim Vaughan has hit some form of late and this 7 year old still appears to have potential to fulfil off a mark 2lb higher than that 2nd here on penultimate start. His effort at Aintree was littered with errors but he goes fresh and is a nice price at 16/1. Southfield Theatre does look a likely winner and his price reflects that. He had to travel all the way round the wide outside over 2 furlongs further than this last time and just emptied at he finish. A truly run 3 miles here should see him at his most effective and expect him to reverse that form with Return Spring.

12:30 Cheltenham - Wonderful Charm

Has done all that was asked of him in winning his three starts over fences this season, and I thought he was particularly impressive when winning at Newbury last time. This is his stiffest task to date, but the manner in which he has jumped, travelled and quickened in his races suggests to me that he can hold his own in any novice company. But clearly giving 8lb to a horse of Oscar Whisky's quality is a very big ask. If he is capable of that, then we can really begin to get excited. He has done his winning on much different tracks to this, but I wouldn't read anything into the fact that he ran below par in the World Hurdle here in March. That wasn't his true form, and we tweaked his breathing after that.


13:40 Cheltenham - Maxi Chop

Has run two great races since having a breathing operation in the summer, and the form of his fourth to Quick Jack here last month is working out really well. In fact, he is due to go up 2lb in the future. I definitely think that he can be competitive again today, though there are a couple in here that could prove to be well-treated.


14:40 Cheltenham - Sire Collonges

Given that it was his first experience over the Cheltenham cross country fences in public, I thought he ran a great race when sixth to Balthazar King last month. He really seemed to enjoy the challenge, travelling and jumping well, which was especially pleasing as he had been a little bit disappointing on his reappearance. Off a mark of 139, I think that he will give Ryan another good spin around here.


15:15 Cheltenham - Edgardo Sol

Ran a decent race when sixth at Haydock last time, on ground that was probably a bit too soft for him, and underfoot conditions will be more to his liking here. He also has been dropped 1lb since then - as well as Harry again taking 5lb off - but I suspect that he will continue to come up against better handicapped horses in the short term, and we are also going into the unknown with him over 3m for the first time.


Southfield Theatre

He looked like winning for a lot of the race here last month, but just got worried out of it on the run-in. He has been raised 4lb for that, which doesn't make life easy, but I think that there is more to come from him and I can see him going close here. In fact, looking at the line-up, he is probably the one to beat.

I didn't really want to run him at Haydock over that trip but he was ready to go and there were so few opportunities for him that we took a chance. I would rather be running him over 2 ½ miles now but, again, it's been very hard to find the right sort of race and over 2m he should at least see his race out well. He's a relentless galloper and the ground on the chase course has been so testing that he should be able to get away with the trip. He jumped well at Haydock on the whole and I still have plenty of faith in him - hopefully we will see what he's all about this time.

He won't mind the conditions and is starting back off a more realistic mark but he isn't the easiest to get right after a break and I would think that he would come on a good deal for the run. It's been a while since he last won but with his mark as it is, there should be a few more opportunities for him, particularly when the ground gets more testing.

He might not have beaten a great deal at Wetherby but he did it very easily and it was the perfect introduction for him over hurdles. He jumped nicely and we knew from his bumper days that he's got a big engine. He's obviously got a bit more on his plate under a penalty but he's ready to go again and hopefully after this we can start looking towards bigger targets in the New Year.

He won a point in Ireland but he hasn't achieved a huge amount in a bumper and a maiden hurdle so far. He is going to find life a bit easier once he can run in handicaps further down the line.

He was very impressive at Haydock first time - the plan was to track Charlie Longsdon's horse (Battle Born) and I thought Jason had him too far back as they were turning in. In the end, he picked up very well and Jason felt he had hit the front soon enough! I like him a lot and although the plan had been to go straight over hurdles, this was a good opportunity for him to gain a bit more experience. He'll be going hurdling sooner rather than later but I am always happy to run a good one here and fingers crossed he will confirm that Haydock promise this time.

This is obviously a competitive race but he's been reliable since we sent him over fences and he is in good nick at home. I suspect there might be something a bit better treated in there but he's ready to go and the conditions should suit him. Hopeful, rather than confident, is the verdict!

Catterick is looking to take another step next week in its bid to hold racing on an artificial surface in the north.

Officials at the North Yorkshire track, ideally placed close to the A1, have been working on the project for about two years.

The next stage comes on Tuesday when they will have the latest in a series of discussions with the British Horseracing Authority.

Catterick's plans, which are still some way off fruition, would see the turf Flat course replaced with a floodlit artificial surface although the jumps track would be kept.

The ambitions were revealed a week after Newcastle, owned by Arena Racing Company, unveiled its plans to replace the existing turf Flat track with an all-weather surface.

"We have a meeting with the BHA team, who are coming up on Tuesday when we have racing," said John Sanderson, chief executive of International Racecourse Management which runs Catterick.

"We haven't started on planning. We have to have an adequate supply of fixtures first.

"We have been working on this for a while and with the BHA, which has been extremely helpful.

"A team came to examine the lay-out and design of the track and made some suggestions which we incorporated some time ago when we were going through the process of consultation and tests and surveys with English Heritage which because of the Roman remains at Catterick in places is absolutely essential.

"English Heritage has enormously wide powers and if it objected we wouldn't get planning, but it has been fine and we got all that behind us a little while ago.

"Now we're in an ongoing dialogue with the BHA over feasibility on fixtures to make the business plan work.

"The year 2016 would be the earliest if everything went well. The other factor is, assuming we've get the fixtures and all the other ducks in a row, we've got to apply for planning consent.

"That's as long as a piece of string. It could take three months, it could take six months. That would be the next critical stage for us.

"Catterick has a number of advantages. From an English perspective, the best area to have it (an all-weather track in the north) would be within Yorkshire. Yorkshire's got a lot of horses. There's a big horse population trained in Yorkshire and it's got a lot of racecourses as well.

"The proximity to the A1 and the accessibility is obviously quite important when we are talking about the core winter period of all-weather racing and twilight fixtures.

"It's also a neat, compact course and can be run economically. It's not an expensive racecourse to operate from Racing plc's perspective. It's a lot to recommend it."

BHA chief executive Paul Bittar said "We can confirm that BHA has been in discussions for a period of time with both ARC, in relation to Newcastle, and Catterick about their respective plans to develop an all-weather track.

"There is an existing timeframe for applications to be made to the BHA board for new, or as in this case, existing racecourses with plans to convert a turf track into an all-weather track, to enter the next fixture allocation process. Applications should be submitted by the end of January in order to even be considered for participation in the 2015 Fixture List.

"Separately, BHA has commissioned Deloitte to produce an independent report for the board looking at a range of factors relating to the market demand, benefits and potential downsides regarding an expansion of all-weather racing in Britain.

"The report, which will reflect consultation with stakeholders, is due to be presented to the board in the spring of 2014, prior to the compilation of the 2015 fixture list."

Apache Stronghold clashes with Champion Bumper hero Briar Hill in what promises to be a hugely informative Navan Novice Hurdle on Sunday.

Third behind The Liquidator in the Grade One bumper at the Punchestown Festival in the spring, the Noel Meade-trained Apache Stronghold scraped home on his hurdling debut at the same track in mid-October.

However, he was far more impressive when landing the Monksfield Novice Hurdle over this weekend's course and distance and he now steps back up to the highest level for a race Meade won with Aran Concerto seven years ago.

The trainer said: "All has gone well since the last day. We couldn't be happier with him at home. We all know Briar Hill is a very good horse, we saw what he did in Cheltenham, and he's going to be hard to beat whatever way you look at it, but you don't get these Grade Ones given and we'll give it a go.

"Our horse likes the track and the ground should be fine, so we'll see what happens."

Meade has also declared Very Wood, the mount of Bryan Cooper.

Since his win at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring, the Willie Mullins-trained Briar Hill has made just one appearance - streaking clear as a 1/9 favourite in a moderate maiden hurdle at Wexford.

Mullins admits his charge faces a far more exacting task, but is hopeful he will be up to the task.

"It's a tough race and Apache Stronghold and Azorian have more experience than our horse, so he's going to have to kick up a gear to go with those," said Mullins.

"The evidence of his bumper form tells you he has a great chance of getting into the race, provided his jumping stands up to the test. His pedigree and the way he did things in Cheltenham tells you two and a half miles shouldn't be any problem for him."

The quartet is completed by Eoin Griffin's Azorian, who was runner-up behind Apache Stronghold at the track three weeks ago.

Griffin said: "With Apache Stronghold and Briar Hill in there, you would have to say he's up against it, but he's in good form and we're happy to let him take his chance.

"He'd have his work cut out to turn the tables with Apache Stronghold on their last run and then you throw the Cheltenham bumper winner in for good measure, so we're under no illusions. He faces a tough task.

"There is a bit of rain forecast, which will be a help to him and maybe he can improve a bit on the last day, as he was a bit green. We'll certainly know where we stand after Sunday and we can tailor the season to suit him then."

Willie Mullins unleashes another smart prospect as Mozoltov makes his debut over fences in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

Third to stablemate Champagne Fever in the champion bumper at the 2012 Punchestown Festival, Mozoltov was subsequently unbeaten in two starts over timber, most recently seeing off Drinmore winner Don Cossack in the Grade Two Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle in February.

The seven-year-old has been off the track since then and now embarks on a career over the bigger obstacles, with Davy Russell taking the ride for owners Gigginstown House Stud.

Mullins said: "Mozoltov is in good form and schools well at home. The ground should be fine for him and if he brings his hurdle form over fences, he probably sets the standard. Hopefully he has a safe round of jumping."

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, THE YOUNG MASTER, ridden by Liam Keniry and trained by Neil Mulholland, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the gelding has strengthened physically since his last run on the flat and he has been running well over hurdles recently. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of THE YOUNG MASTER could be reviewed.

2.00, fifth race

The Stewards noted that PICENO (IRE), unplaced, had finished the race with only one cheekpiece attached. Having viewed a recording of the race the Stewards were satisfied that the cheekpiece, which became detached two furlongs out, was in a fit and serviceable condition and they took no further action.

The Stewards noted that BAY KNIGHT (IRE), unplaced, had interfered with DOCOFTHEBAY (IRE), unplaced, which in turn interfered with MARIA’S CHOICE (IRE), unplaced, which in turn interfered with ESCAPE TO GLORY (USA), unplaced, turning into the straight but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

2.20, fifth race

The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of HIGHPOWER (IRE), ridden by Richie McGrath and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which appeared to have been tenderly ridden before staying on to finish seventh, beaten some 37 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to jump off get him settled midfield and to do his best. He added that he was unable to carry out these instructions because he had been shuffled back at the start and the gelding had made mistakes at the first four hurdles. This meant that he had become further behind than he had intended. He also stated that he had tried to make ground up from the fourth last but had been unable to so and then had stayed on past beaten horses in the straight. The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied with the ride given to the gelding. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BIG KENNY, ridden by Luke Morris and trained by David Evans, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that BIG KENNY had benefitted from a poor race and being gelded since his last run. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of BIG KENNY could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered BIG KENNY to be routine tested.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Martin Harley, the rider of CLASSY TRICK (USA), placed second, inside the final two furlongs. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. “it just says that you’re not allowed to lay your horse and I take that
as you’re not allowed to profit from your horse getting beat in any race”. This
understandi
ng resulted
at least
in part, he told the Panel, from his reading of the
Racing Post’
s reports of the Harry Findlay
case in 2010.

The BHA did not suggest that Mr Arnold was giving a false account of his view of
what the Rules of Racing allowed.
And having heard from
Mr Arnold himself
, the
Panel accepted that he had somehow come to
think
that
he was acting within the
Rules. However there was no reasonable or coherent
basis
for his understanding. It
was not possible to divine how he came to constru
ct a belief in the legality of what he
did from what he said about the Findlay case. In any event,
his subjective
view
of the
Rules relating to lay betting was not
what mattered
.
The terms of Rule
s
(E)92.2
and
92.3
are clear and have been the subject of wi
de publicity though the cases of Mr
Findlay and other
s. Owners ca
nnot place lay bets against their horses in any
circumstances
.

Of course, Mr Arnold’s admission of breach of Rule (E)92.2 shows that now, at any
rate, he recognises that his lay bettin
g was wrong. Therefore the Panel’s task was to
determine the necessary penalty.

The BHA drew attention to the Guide to Procedures and Penalties, which gives a
penalty range of 3 months to 10 years disqualification with an entry point of 18
months. It
was readily acknowledged that Mr Arnold’s betting (by which he always
stood to profit more if his horses won than if they lost) meant that he was not
engaged in any corruption. But against that they set the repeated
nature
of his
breaches.
The Pane
l was as
ked to apply the Guid
e
’s
recommendation
without
examining previous decisions.

On Mr Arnold’s behalf, it was said that there was disc
retion to ignore the
recommendation that disqualification was
the only
appropriate
course
. Mr Mac
Neice
3
submitted that
the imposition of
a fine was the correct ap
proach, and drew attention
to four
previous decisions.

It is correct that the Panel has discretion to impose penalties of a different kind of
those recommended in the Guide, though such cases are likely to be
rare. Similarly,
it is unusual to permit reference to previous decisions, essentially because attempts
to compare one set of facts with another do not provide a useful approach.
Consistently with that, the Panel felt that 3 of the 4 decisions referred to
by Mr Mac
Neice were not of assistance. But it agreed with him that the Appeal Board's decision
in Harry Findlay's case
dated 14 June 2010 was important
–
it expresses general
principles that should inform the approach of Disciplinary Panels to cases of la
y
betting by owners.
This Panel extracts the following from that decision in the light of
subsequent developments:
(i)
there is "a clear distinction... t
o be drawn between a lay bet placed as part of
a corrupt practice or even conspiracy and a betting strate
gy which has not
interfered in any way with the integrity of the race and in particular the
running of the horse in question."
(ii)
though Rule
(
E
)
92.2 has not been changed since that decision to reflect that
"clear distinction", it ought in principle to
be a critical consideration when
determining an appropriate penalty.
(iii)
however,
it has to be recognised that
the Guide to Penalties has not been
amended to provide for a penalty short of disqualification in case of "non
-
corrupt" lay betting, despite th
e fact that this was the course which
the
Appeal Board too
k in Mr Findlay's case.
(iv)
despite the
lack of a
mendment of
the Guide, this Panel was prepared in
principle to impose a fine if it felt that the overall justice of the case required
this.
(v)
the
Appeal Board in Mr Findlay's case itself recognised that disqualification
could be the appropriate penalty even if lay betting by an owner was "non
-
corrupt". It referred to the publicity attracted by Mr Findlay's case and noted
that the excuses
for breach
of the lay betting R
ule were hard to envisage for
the future. And it also concluded that Mr Findlay's penalty (a fine of £4
,
500)
"should not be regarded as a precedent by anyone covered by the Rule
contemplating a betting strategy involving lay betting".

With those considerations in mind, the Panel proceeded to evaluate the present
case. A number of features indicated that the penalty should fall well below the 18
month disqualification entry point, and perhaps should even just take the form of a
fine
:
(i)
Mr Arnold took no steps to conceal his lay bets.
They were placed openly on
his a
ccount and he readily disclosed them to BHA
I
nvestigators.
(ii)
the
bets were part of a strategy which cast no doubt upon the integrity of the
races
–
they were "non
-
corrupt" in that sense. Even within the confines of Mr
Arnold's Betfair account, his overall position in all but one of the races was
that he would not make
any profit if his horse lost. In the one exception, the
profit he stood to make was nominal.
(iii)
generally, the lay betting figures were small. Mr Arnold said that he was in all
cases matching offers already placed by other gamblers
–
he was not
tempting
people to bet by himself putting up amounts that backers could
match. In all, he gained just £490 from his successful lay bets. In one case,
h
is lay betting was unsuccessful (
FROGNAL
(IRE)
at Wol
verhampton on
9
November 2012),
and obviously the gamblers o
n the other side of his £107 of
lay bets against FROGNAL
(IRE)
have profited from them. (Those lay bets
were at odds averaging 8/1).

Against those matters, the Panel had to weigh other considerations. Mr Arnold is a
knowledgeable and committed racing
man with
a considerable background in the
sport. His error in thinking that lay betting by an owner could be permissible as part of
his betting strategy was a bizarre one. There has been ample publicity for many
years to make all owners, and particularly e
xperienced owners, fully aware that any
lay betting by them against the chances of their own horses is a serious breach of the
R
ules. This was not a one
-
off breach, but a series of breaches occurring over a nine
-
month period. Further, there were losers as
a result of Mr Arnold's impermissible lay
bets to the modest tune of £490. (This is a factual distinction between Mr Arnold's
and Mr Findlay's cases: in the latter the lay bets
all
lost). Finally,
the Panel felt that
the wider interests of effective regula
tion of the sport require that disqualification
should be the usual penalty even in many cases of "non
-
corrupt" lay betting by
owners, to avoid lengthy investigations of motive in any given case. It is readily
acknowledged that some mistaken lay bets might
attract penalties short of
disqualification. But Mr Arnold "mistake" in this case was his oddly acquired belief

that his betting strategy was permissible, rather than
for instance
any error in keying
his instructions to the Betfair website.
13.
Balancing
all these factors, this Panel concluded that it was necessary to impose a
disqualification, but that it should be at the lowest end of the range indicated in the
Guide. Mr Arnold was accordingly disqualified for 3 months with effect from
Friday
6
December
2013
until Wednesday 5 March 2014 inclusive

STAT WATCH.

While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently
in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win-
ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.

Channel 4 viewers are set for another spectacular
selection of quality Jumps races this Saturday,
with coverage from Cheltenham (1.50, 2.25, 3.00
and 3.35) and Doncaster (2.05 and 3.15.)
Last Saturday's action was seemingly all about
the across-the-card five-timer of Paul Nicholls,
and it's clear that the former seven-time
Champion trainer isn't prepared to let reigning
Champion Nicky Henderson have things all his
own way. In the 14 days to Monday, 9 Decem-
ber, Nicholls saddled more winners (14) than
any other UK trainer, except fellow Somerset
trainer Philip Hobbs, who also achieved the
same tally. In fact, Hobbs took precedence by
virtue of his superior strike rate (37% to 29%),
with Donald McCain not far behind on wins
(12), just ahead of Nicky Henderson (10.)
Wins were more evenly distributed between
the country's leading Jump jockeys, with
Richard Johnson, Jason Maguire and Daryl
Jacob all sharing 10 wins, just behind the 12
of Tony McCoy. Jacob chalked up his tally from
fewer rides than his counterparts, thus record-
ing the leading strike rate of the period (37%),
just bettering that of James Best (36%.)
The first of the televised races at Cheltenham is
the Grade 2 Bristol Novices' Hurdle, which looks
a fair opportunity for the Paul Nicholls-trained
Saint Roque, given the stable's current red-hot
form and Saint Roque's winning form on the ex-
pected good ground (2 from 3, 67%) and at the
course (1 from 2, 50%.) Another who is possibly
less exposed (and so may be open to more im-
provement), is the David Pipe-trained Kings
Palace, who is unbeaten on the ground and at
the course. Pipe also has a massive £27 per £1
level stakes profit at the course in the past five
seasons.
Also at Cheltenham, the Grade 2 Relkeel Hur-
dle looks a decent renewal, with a number of
in-form prospects representing major yards.
Although winless on the expected ground, the
Paul Nicholls-trained Salubrious ran a career-
best last time in such conditions, and has a
chance on official ratings, having winning form
at the course and over distance. The French
raider Gemix looks to have the best form on
offer, but has achieved all that in very testing
conditions.
Doncaster's Grade 2 Summit Hurdle, a Grade
2 race over 2m for juvenile hurdlers, looks ripe
for the picking of Nicky Henderson's Royal
Irish Hussar, who is already rated 144 over
hurdles and unbeaten on the going and over
distance. Also, his trainer has the most-win-
ning record at the course in the past five sea-
sons. However, Broughton and Commissioned
are also interesting on their Flat form (having
been rated 90+ under that code in the last
year) and their trainer John Ferguson has a su-
perb 43% strike rate at Doncaster.
Later on the same card at Doncaster's Town
Moor course is the 3m handicap chase, won
twice in the last two years by runners of Emma
Lavelle. The Andover trainer could saddle
Coole River in this race, who is potentially well-
treated at the ratings according to the pick of
his form, and may have more to offer over this
distance. Lavelle also has the leading trainer
strike rate at this course (38%) in the past five
seasons. Nicky Henderson's Bear Affair could
be an interesting alternative, having been
campaigned at a lowish level so far over
fences, but has some good form and may be
open to further improvement; he is 4 from 6
on the going and 1 from 2 on the ground.

NOTEBOOK.

At Musselburgh's Monday meeting earlier this
week, the 2m maiden hurdle was won by a long
odds-on favourite, Population, of trainer John
Ferguson, who was racing over hurdles for the sixth
time, and had finished second or third in three of
his previous five starts. On one occasion, he had
finished a seven-length runner-up to My Tent Or
Yours, a recent winner at Grade 1 level, and while
there's nothing to suggest Population is in that
league, the form augurs well for the runner-up,
MAY'S BOY
, in this latest race at Musselburgh.
May's Boy, a five-time winner on the Flat when
trained by Mark Usher, and now in the hands of
James Moffatt, was sent off at Musselburgh at
25/1, despite having shown a modest degree of
promise when fourth of eight on his hurdling
debut over course-and-distance the time before.
On this latest start he was ridden more promi-
nently, but was a little keen early on. Despite that,
he showed well and was the only one to really
challenge the winner until that horse, who made
all, asserted from the last and drew clear to win
by nine lengths.
Given that the winner was twice a winner in
bumpers and was sixth in the Grade 2 bumper
behind The New One at Aintree in 2012, and rated
125 over hurdles going into this race, there was
no disgrace on May's Boy's part in finishing
second. It was definitely a step-up on his debut
performance over hurdles and he was probably
unlucky to bump into one so good, who had
travelled hundreds of miles specifically for this
race.
Trainer Harry Fry should have been pleased with
the chasing debut effort of
VUKOVAR
, in the 2m
beginners' chase at Warwick last Sunday. Al-
though he finished runner-up and the beaten 4/6
favourite, Vukovar ran well for a long way and was
just worn down in the home straight by a talented
charge of Paul Nicholls. The trainer's stable is
firing on all cylinders at the moment and the win-
ner had some nice bits of form over hurdles to his
name last season, including when second in the
Grade 3 Swinton Hurdle.
Vukovar, who was last seen on the racecourse
when winning at Auteuil for his previous connec-
tions, beating the subsequent Greatwood Hurdle
winner, Dell' Arca, in the process, will arguably
come on for the experience of this latest run. Also,
and perhaps more significantly, the good-soft
ground at Warwick was only good-soft, and a deal
quicker than that on which Vukovar has shown his
best form to date. His prospects should improve
when the rain arrives this winter.
Another runner-up at Warwick who should be ca-
pable of winning this season is Oliver Sherwood's
DEPUTY DAN
, who had just been beaten on his
hurdling debut at Carlisle in early November. Twice
a winner in bumpers last season, including on soft
and heavy ground, he probably would have pre-
ferred more testing conditions underfoot at War-
wick, but still ran well to be beaten less than two
lengths by a slightly more experienced winner.
Deputy Dan joined the winner three out and actu-
ally led briefly before being headed at the last,
and although he was ultimately beaten, he fin-
ished more than twenty lengths clear of the
remainder. He can win before long.

RACING NEWS.

2011 Epsom Oaks heroine, Dancing
Rain, made 4,000,000gns at the
Tattersalls December Breeding Sale in
Newmarket last week. In foal to
Frankel, Dancing Rain represented the
first Classic winner to be offered for
sale at public auction for over fifty
years. She was bought by John
Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh
Mohammed. Shortly afterwards, M V
Magnier paid 4,600,000gns for the 2011
Coronation Stakes and Prix Jacques Le
Marois winner, Immortal Verse.
It was a disappointing weekend in Hong
Kong for European runners, with
Moonlight Cloud and Sky Lantern well
beaten at Sha Tin. The John Size-trained
Glorious Days went one better than a
year ago, with Tom Hogan's Gordon Lord
Byron doing best of the Europeans in
fourth. In the Hong Kong Vase, the for-
mer Roger Varian-trained Dominant
beat Lady Lloyd-Webber's The Fugue to
claim the £1million contest.
Robert Cowell's Nunthorpe heroine,
Jwala, had to be put down after suffer-
ing severe injuries following a horror
fall in the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin
last weekend. Jockey Steve Drowne
faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines
having broken his collarbone and
punctured a lung in the fall.
The Marco Botti-trained Dandino was
forced to miss an intended engagement
in the Hong Kong Vase after picking up
an injury. Darren Dance, representing
the owners, Australian Thoroughbred
Bloodstock, confirmed that Dandino had
injured a foreleg just days before the
race at Sha Tin and that the globe-trot-
ting star would be given all the time he
needs before running again.
Trainer Gerard Butler has been banned
for five years after an inquiry by the
BHA. According to reports, Butler ad-
mitted to all seven charges against
him, relating to samples of an anabolic
steroid found in horses in his care. The
BHA reportedly accused Butler of an
'appalling' dereliction of his duties,
with nine of his horses producing pos-
itive samples. An inconsolable Butler
has said that he is devastated.
Two-mile star Sprinter Sacre was forced
to miss the Tingle Creek Chase at
Sandown last weekend after an unsat-
isfactory tracheal wash. Trainer Nicky
Henderson hopes to have Sprinter Sacre
ready for a belated seasonal reappear-
ance at Kempton over Christmas.
Sheikh Joaan picked up yet another
award for impressive Arc winner Treve,
at the recent ROA Awards in London.
The daughter of Motivator was
awarded the outstanding middle-dis-
tance horse and outstanding filly.
Other winners on the night included
Chriselliam (outstanding two-year-old)
and The Queen, who was named owner
of the year.

Won the Neptune at the Cheltenham Festival
last season, was just beaten by Zarkandar in
the Aintree Hurdle and entered favouritism for
this season's Champion Hurdle when a ready
winner of a Listed Hurdle at Kempton from
the former Champion Hurdler Rock On Ruby.
The strength of the Neptune form is open to
question, but The New One is still an exciting
prospect and will have plenty left in reserve
at the business end of this race. RATING 99
4-F111 Albert Hall 10F 8 11-4 A Chaille-Chaille
Has fair hurdles form, including recent Listed
win over 2m 3f at the start of October. Has
been kept fit with recent wins in 10f handi-
caps on the Flat. Interesting French raider
but has lots to find to enter serious reckon-
ing here. RATING 94
411-87 Court Minstrel 27 6 11-4 Evan Williams
A costly mistake when 5/1F for a Listed
handicap hurdle at Ascot cost him dearly on
his seasonal debut, but he improved when
seventh last time in the Greatwood Hurdle.
That form, and his Scottish Champion Hurdle
win last season, entitles him to respect.
However, in this company, he only looks
capable of sneaking into a place on his best
form, assuming the expected main players
run to form. RATING 95
62881S Hawkhill 21 7 11-4 Tim Vaughan
Slipped up last time when weakening out of
contention in Class 3 handicap hurdle at
Haydock, which was disappointing after he
had won the time before with some ease.
Versatile in terms of ground, but looks hand-
icapped to his best and has a bit to prove
now. RATING 92
2/2110 Seabreeze D ́Ho 27 7 11-4 Christian Le Galliard
Won two Listed handicap hurdles in last
three starts, over 2m 2f and 2m 4f, but
much more needed here after looking held
when finishing mid-div on Grade 2 on latest
start, with no obvious excuses. Needs to im-
prove to trouble the best of these. RATING 93
16-061 Jumps Road 9 6 11-0 Colin Tizzard
Emerged as a fair handicap hurdler in the
spring of last season, and while that at-
tracted the attentions of the handicapper,
his latest win off a mark of 124 was his best
form to date. Even so, like a few others in this
race, he is reliant on the expected protago-
nists under-performing to have a serious
chance in this race. RATING 93
141-2 Zarkandar 21 6 11-8 Paul Nicholls
Only six years of age, but has already es-
tablished himself as one of the leading
lights at his powerful stable. Fair effort in
defeat behind smart mare on seasonal
debut in the Ascot Hurdle last time, and
won this race last year. With stable in top
form, the one to beat.

Racing Tips - 14/12/2013

Normally I'd stick with 1 in a handicap paying 3 places but there are 2 that look worth support at the current prices for today's feature race. Obvious choice but still bigger than I thought he'd be is Colour Squadron who really got it together last time in the Paddy Power and was closing on the winner having been hampered by the fall of Easter Meteor. The concern is his lack of time in the winners enclosure but he is consistent and has the services of A P McCoy today, who couldn't do the weight on him last time. This selection, and the next as it happens, is using Johns Spirit as a guide to the form but I fancy the Hobbs horse to win that particular battle with another 1lb in hand at 6/1. I can't help but think Sew On Target is a decent shout at 16/1 back over middle distances and with a massive 16lb pull and only 4 and a half lengths to find with the Paddy Power winner after their run here in October. He was further held that day than the distance suggested but it was run in a very god time and the Tizzard horse was finding at the business end so there's every hope he'll see out this extra furlong. If allowed to have things his own way up front, he could be dangerous.

Warden Hill lines up at Doncaster over a trip that promises to suit. He looked a touch outpaced in a competitive handicap at Cheltenham last time out but stayed on encouragingly and this extra 3 furlongs should be ideal. The form of that race is solid, as is that of his win on penultimate start and he is feasibly well treated back in novice company and in receipt of 6lb from his closest rival. He is a little shorter than ideal at 2/1 but trip and ground are in his favour and he should be capable of dominating in this class. Slver Eagle is tricky to work out and has disappointed since a superb effort on reappearance. He looked outclassed over 3 miles 2 in a very good handicap next time but the real worry was being turned over by a bigger priced stable mate at Towecester next time, though he was giving away plenty of weight. Tom Bellamy takes of 7lb which will be very useful, as will better ground than last time, but he has a bit to prove now and isn't that appealing at a similar price to the selection.
Doncaster 12.25 - Warden Hill 2pt win

I think The New One will live up to the hype in the International Hurdle but would be keen to back him to win by less than a length…Zarkander has undoubtedly been underestimated and could be more of a danger than he's been given credit for. You get the impression that Nicky Henderson wants course and distance revenge for the Grand Annual and sends out 4 this afternoon. Pick of them for me is French Opera who goes well here and drops to a handicap mark he should be competitive from. The key is the good ground today and this is the most feasible task he has faced for sometime, having won the race 3 years ago off a mark 3lb lower. The selection goes to Saved By John who was a game finisher behind Alasi at Ascot last time and should appreciate this stiffer track. He travelled nicely here at a massive price before coming down in the handicap at the end of the first day and is still seemingly well treated. A winner on heavy ground and competitive over further, he will want this to be a stamina test and needs something to take them along but that does look likely. The Tim Vaughan yard is finding its feet this term and he's a solid option at 13/2.

Apache Stronghold is rated a major doubt for tomorrow's Navan Novice Hurdle after developing a foot abscess.

Noel Meade: Was looking forward to running at Navan





The Noel Meade-trained five-year-old has created a big impression in winning both his starts this season and was set for a mouth-watering clash with WIllie Mullins' Briar Hill.

But Meade said: "He's certainly no more than 50-50, if he's that.

"He was fine yesterday, we plated him on Thursday and he breezed yesterday and was good last night, but come this morning we found a tiny little abscess in his off-fore foot.





"We've been working hard on it all day, but I really wanted to see him sound and a huge improvement when I came back from the races, but he's not and he's sore.

"We'll change it (poultice) a couple of more times and see.

"We hope he's such a good horse and we don't want to risk him if he's not 100 per cent. This is a Grade One and the race we wanted to run him in, but that's the way it goes."

Should Apache Stronghold be ruled out, the race would be reduced to just three runners, with Meade's Very Wood and Eoin Griffin's Azorian, both owned by Gigginstown House Stud, in opposition to Briar Hill.

Willie Mullins broke his own record as he clocked up his 100th winner of the campaign at Fairyhouse on Saturday.


Willie Mullins: Notched up another century



The handler hit the century mark a couple of days earlier than last season, as Mozoltov made a winning debut over fences in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Beginners Chase.

Last seen when beating subsequent Drinmore Chase winner Don Cossack at Punchestown back in February, Mozoltov was far from hard pushed in the hands of Davy Russell.

Prominent throughout, the 1/2 favourite was spring-heeled at the last to come home a cosy winner over Mallowney with pace-setting Mount Colah back in third.

Mullins was delighted to send out his 100th success, but also keen to pay tribute to his team.




He said: "I've good clients and they're a fantastic pleasure to train for. I know I'm very lucky and I have to take my hat off to the team at home who are behind everything."

Of Mozoltov, he said: "I was very pleased with him and was delighted we were able to retain him when he went up for sale.

"His form was good all the way through over hurdles and today he looked a good solid jumper and learned as he went along. We wouldn't be afraid to go up in class with him, he can go up in trip and I think he'll handle any ground."

John Ryan is hoping Paul Carberry will be free to take the mount on Foildubh in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown on December 28.



Paul Carberry: Likely to be available for Lexus mount




The County Tipperary owner/trainer is keen on a crack at the prestigious Grade One feature for his nine-year-old - but is adamant he will not run if Carberry is unavailable.

Carberry steered Foildubh to victory from Willie Mullins' highly-rated French import Rubi Ball over hurdles at Thurles last month, only to fall in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork on Sunday.

"Foildubh is perfect, he is 100%. He is in great form, and he will probably run in the Lexus if Paul Carberry is available," said Ryan.

"If his isn't available we will look at something else for him."

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TIMESISHARD (IRE), ridden by Wayne Hutchinson and trained by Graeme McPherson, compared with its previous run at Chepstow on 7 December, where the gelding finished eleventh of thirteen beaten 85 lengths. They noted the trainer had no explanation other than that the gelding had jumped more fluently in this race. They ordered TIMESISHARD to be routine tested.

2.25, fifth race

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the circumstances under which the top weight, CHAMPION COURT (IRE), trained by Martin Keighley, had been withdrawn. Having heard his evidence they referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority.

3.10, sixth race

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the turn into the home straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that JUMPS ROAD, placed third, ridden by Brendan Powell, had interfered with ZARKANDAR (IRE), placed second, ridden by Daryl Jacob. The Stewards found Powell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred into a gap where there was insufficient room. They suspended him for 3 days as follows: Sunday 29, Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 December 2013.

1.10, third race

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference rounding the bend turning into the straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that PUTIN (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Donna Caldwell, had interfered with UNCLE BRIT, placed third, ridden by P J McDonald, who in turn interfered with SILLY BILLY (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Paul Pickard. The Stewards found Caldwell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that she failed to take sufficient steps to prevent interference. They suspended her for 3 days as follows: Saturday 28, Sunday 29 and Monday 30 December 2013.

1.45, fourth race

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BONNIE FAIRY, ridden by Andrew Mullen and trained by Michael Appleby, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the filly had benefited from running on the fibresand surface. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of BONNIE FAIRY could be reviewed.

3.30, seventh race

The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, DAME NELLIE MELBA, ridden by Joe Fanning, had interfered with RETURNTOBRECONGILL, placed second, ridden by Graham Lee. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved DAME NELLIE MELBA’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.

6.50, second race

The Stewards noted that SOLAR DEITY (IRE), placed second, had interfered with HIGH NET WORTH, unplaced, approaching the first bend but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved SOLAR DEITY (IRE)’s placing.

The Stewards noted that there was interference between STAR LINKS (USA), unplaced, and MODERNISM, unplaced, one and an half furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Martin Harley, the rider of SOLAR DEITY (IRE), placed second, from approaching the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Harley for 2 days as follows: Sunday 29 and Monday 30 December 2013.

8.50, Sixth race

The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that CHEWOREE, trained by Tom Dascombe, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test. This being the second occasion within the previous 12 months that CHEWOREE had been reported, the Stewards informed the trainer that if the filly were reported for a third time within the same period, CHEWOREE would be prevented from having a stalls test for 6 months.

9.20, seventh race

The Stewards noted that STEELCUT, unplaced, had interfered with INVIGILATOR, placed fourth, one and an half furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

Rebecca Curtis reports At Fishers Cross to be ready to try to restore his reputation in the Wessex Youth Trust Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday.



At Fishers Cross: Connections hoping for Ascot rain




Last season's Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle hero blotted his copybook when meeting the second-last flight all wrong and stumbling on landing on his first run this term in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last month.

While Curtis has given her stable star some schooling in an attempt to to brush up his hurdling, she would like to see rain ahead of the Grade One over three miles and one furlong.





The JP McManus-owned six-year-old managed to stay on his feet to finish last of four behind Celestial Halo, though it ended his run of six victories.

"I just hope we get a bit of rain in Ascot to soften things up a bit," said the Newport trainer.

"He's schooled well at home since and he's in good form, so hopefully he should run well."

Meanwhile, stablemate Teaforthree is set to make his seasonal reappearance in the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow on December 28.

Rebecca Curtis's smart staying chaser will bid to go one better in the long-distance handicap chase than last winter when he was caught on the run-in by Monbeg Dude and beaten half a length.

He also looked like winning the John Smith's Grand National when in front at the second last only to be headed by Auroras Encore and Cappa Bleu.

Teaforthree went to Chepstow with two runs under his belt, but he has to go there this time without the benefit of a previous outing.

"He's been good and he's all on target now for the Welsh National," said Curtis.

"It would have been nice to get a run into him beforehand but he's done plenty at home and we didn't have that option this year, so he'll just have to go as he is. He runs well fresh."

Cantlow is likely to step up to three miles after staying on strongly to take second place behind Double Ross in the Stewart Family Thank You Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

The Paul Webber-trained eight-year-old showed smart form over that distance over hurdles, including when placed in the both the Grade One John Smith's Sefton Novices' Hurdle and the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham.

He has generally been campaigned at shorter distances over fences and his one effort over further at Aintree in April did not work out.

However, he was reported on Sunday to have taken his exertions over two miles and five furlongs very well.

"He's absolutely grand. He ate up last night and he's a tough warrior," said Webber.

"He made a mistake (seven out) but you are not going to meet every fence in every steeplechase spot on - that's what happens. I think the winner made his fair share as well at one point.






"He ran well and he's come on from Newbury, which was a good effort. He dealt with those horses again despite going up in the weights and hopefully he'll still be on the improve for a little bit.

"We have no targets at the moment. We will have to wait until Tuesday to see what the handicapper reckons, but obviously stepping up to three miles may well help things in the future.

"We know he stays three miles - his best race over hurdles was at that trip. That's still to come. We will just take little steps."

Ryan Moore scored another high-profile success in Japan as he partnered Asia Express to victory in the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes.

The jockey landed the Japan Cup aboard Gentildonna last month and made it a Group One double in the country as he steered Asia Express to a length-and-a-quarter victory at Nakayama racecourse.

Moore said: "He surprised me - he quickened up so well. When I rode him before, he looked like he was a horse with lots of gears.

"He's a special horse, because not many do both dirt and grass. His future should be bright.

"He feels like he hasn't got to the bottom of it yet, like there's more to come, so it'll be interesting to see how much progress he makes."

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TIMESISHARD (IRE), ridden by Wayne Hutchinson and trained by Graeme McPherson, compared with its previous run at Chepstow on 7 December 2013, where the gelding finished eleventh of thirteen, beaten 85 lengths. They noted the trainer had no explanation other than that the gelding had jumped more fluently in this race. They ordered TIMESISHARD to be routine tested.

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the circumstances under which the top weight, CHAMPION COURT (IRE), trained by Martin Keighley, had been withdrawn. Having heard his evidence they referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority.

3.10, sixth race

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference shortly after the turn into the home straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that JUMPS ROAD, placed third, ridden by Brendan Powell, had interfered with ZARKANDAR (IRE), placed second, ridden by Daryl Jacob. The Stewards found Powell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he manoeuvred into a gap where there was insufficient room. They suspended him for 3 days as follows: Sunday 29, Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 December 2013.

1.10, third race

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference rounding the bend turning into the straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that PUTIN (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Donna Caldwell, had interfered with UNCLE BRIT, placed third, ridden by P J McDonald, who in turn interfered with SILLY BILLY (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Paul Pickard. The Stewards found Caldwell in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that she failed to take sufficient steps to prevent interference. They suspended her for 3 days as follows: Saturday 28, Sunday 29 and Monday 30 December 2013.

1.45, fourth race

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BONNIE FAIRY, ridden by Andrew Mullen and trained by Michael Appleby, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the filly had benefited from running on the fibresand surface. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of BONNIE FAIRY could be reviewed.

3.30, seventh race

The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, DAME NELLIE MELBA, ridden by Joe Fanning, had interfered with RETURNTOBRECONGILL, placed second, ridden by Graham Lee. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved DAME NELLIE MELBA’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.

6.50, second race

The Stewards noted that SOLAR DEITY (IRE), placed second, had interfered with HIGH NET WORTH, unplaced, approaching the first bend but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved SOLAR DEITY (IRE)’s placing.

The Stewards noted that there was interference between STAR LINKS (USA), unplaced, and MODERNISM, unplaced, one and an half furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Martin Harley, the rider of SOLAR DEITY (IRE), placed second, from approaching the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Harley for 2 days as follows: Sunday 29 and Monday 30 December 2013.

8.50, Sixth race

The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that CHEWOREE, trained by Tom Dascombe, was the subject of a third criteria failure. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the filly could not run until the day after passing a stalls test. This being the second occasion within the previous 12 months that CHEWOREE had been reported, the Stewards informed the trainer that if the filly were reported for a third time within the same period, CHEWOREE would be prevented from having a stalls test for 6 months.

9.20, seventh race

The Stewards noted that STEELCUT, unplaced, had interfered with INVIGILATOR, placed fourth, one and an half furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

There is a real staying handicap on heavy ground at Ffos Las today with plenty of competition at the top of the market. Seymour Eric has made an encouraging start to his chasing career, is a heavy ground winner, and looks well treated off 4lb lower than his highest winning mark over hurdles. Titchwood could be anything over this trip but probably has the most to prove on handicap bow, especially at the prices. Relax would be a safe bet if this was 12 moths ago and Shaking Hands, the most proven stayer in the field, is a winner here but 9lb higher now and he my struggle, especially if given competition for the lead by Relax. I can't believe Sir Du Bearn is as big as 20/1, though he may still find something too good. Still only a 7 year old, he was staying on in a truly run race last time at Newbury over 2 and a half furlongs shorter and has won on heavy ground before. He drops to his last winning mark and made a really encouraging start for a yard in decent form last time.

Another Peter Bowen runner makes most appeal in the previous race but is at the other end of the market. Rolling Maul has twice been turned over as a short favourite and that would normally mean a big cross next to him. However, he is likely to appreciate this step up to 2 and a half miles and will be better back at Ffos Las than he was last time at Bangor. He ran well on penultimate start over 2 miles here on this sort of ground and the form of that race suggests he may have something in hand with the handicapper. 10/3 is perhaps shorter than I thought he might be but it's difficult to make as solid a case for anything else. Quaddick Lake has every chance back up in trip but is very short given what he has shown this term. Perhaps best of the bigger prices is Makethe Mostofnow given his past efforts at this track in particular. He was below his best last time though and, well treated on paper, has to show a return to some sort of form before getting too excited. One thing that will be essential is a true test at this trip.

Tony Martin's runner was a well-backed winner at Cheltenham on his previous outing but connections have opted not to take up his engagement at Berkshire for which 27 runners remain in contention.

The Pond House stables of David Pipe have enjoyed plenty of success in this valuable handicap under the current master and his predecessor, father Martin.

The yard is well represented with French import Dell'Arca arguably the pick of their setxtet which comprises Swing Bowler, Shotavodka, Ronaldo Des Mottes, Dan Breen and Waterunder.

The well-regarded but hitherto disappointing Snake Eyes is a fascinating possible for Nicky Henderson who could also be represented by outside Champion Hurdle hopes Rolling Star and Chatterbox.

Trainers' championship rival Paul Nicholls has the two highest rated runners in Ptit Zig and Sametegal as well as Irish Saint while Willie Mullins could run City Slicker.

Pine Creek and Chris Pea Green, first and second over C&D earlier in the season, could do battle again with Ruacana, Alaivan and Totalize among other interesting contenders.

Sky Bet's revised betting sees Rolling Star head the market at 11/2 followed by City Slicker 7/1, Dell'Arca and Chatterbox 10/1, Sametegal 12s and 14/1 bar.

Last season's incredibly impressive Triumph Hurdle winner has only been seen once since he left seasoned observers agog with his 15-length win at Cheltenham.

Trainer Dessie Hughes gave him a spin on the level at Naas where he ran a nice race to finish fourth, but he picked up a knock which ruled him out of his first intended jumping target of the season, the Morgiana Hurdle.



In his absence Hurricane Fly landed yet another Grade One and although it was a rather laboured display from the dual champion hurdler, Hughes expects Willie Mullins' superstar to strip much fitter at Leopardstown.

"Our Conor is in very good shape now, we'll take him to a racecourse between now and Christmas and do his last bit of work there," Hughes told Leopardstown racecourse.

"I've been very happy with him, he's a stronger horse, he's moving terrific and I'm looking forward to the 29th.

"I suppose you could say Hurricane Fly in the Morgiana was adequate, they can only win. I thought it was a good, fast-run race, they went a real proper gallop and he won and he'll improve on it so you'd have to be very much afraid of him.

"He's had no real strong opposition for the last three years apart from the other grey horse of Willie's (Thousand Stars) who was placed to him each time he ran.

"It looks a different cup of tea this year, the novices are much better than they were two years ago."
