15:15 Monday 28th October Racing Tips - 28/10/2013
British racing is off but there is a super card at Naas and we may as well embrace the jumps season. I'm a big fan of Special Tiara who has Bryan Cooper back on top after being beaten by 33 lengths at the hands of the superb Arvika Ligeonniere at Punchestown. Their Aintree win was superb but it may have been helped with decent ground and that is not the case today. On level weights he'd be a stronger fancy but giving weight to all but 1 is a tough ask. I think Realt Mor wants further but the trip looks ideal for Twinlight. He gets on well with Ruby Walsh but he is also up there in the weights and may be better right-handed given he can jump that way. Preference is for favourite Oscars Well at 9/4 who was an impressive 2nd at Punchestown and looked to handle underfoot conditions better than most, though it won't be quite so testing today. That was his 3rd 2nd placed finish in Group 1 company but he is better off in the weights with rivals today and can finally taste Grade success. Naas 13.45 - Oscars Well 3pt win
Rule The World is giving weight all round (bar On His Own) but his form is 2nd to none and the trainer appears confident that he has recovered well from a fractured pelvis in April. It was a shame not to see him complete the race, especially after his 2nd at Cheltenham, but 2 miles at Punchestown may have been a touch on the sharp side and this looks very much his trip. The New One has come out and performed brilliantly since defeating Mouse Morris' 6 year old in the Neptune and it's difficult to see anything beating him here at 6/4. Waaheb is undoubtedly classy but not all that consistent. The step up in trip is likely to suit but I'm not sure 10lb will be enough to put him on terms with the favourite. The danger may be Seskinane at 7/1 who is in receipt of a stone form the top weights and has solid form coming into this. Derek Fox was at fault for a disqualification last time when he was clearly the best horse in a decent field, including On His Own, and he still remains unexposed. Whether he is quite the class of Rule The World remains to be seen. Naas 14.15 - Rule The World 3pt win
Colbert Station was a strong fancy for the National last term and makes his seasonal reappearance today off a lenient hurdles mark of 129. That is 10lb higher than for his last start in this sphere when winning at Punchestown but there is the concern this could be on the sharp side for him. Jennies Jewel is worth support but I am always reluctant to be too confident about a runner on handicap bow. She was beaten by a progressive sort last time out and could effectively be well treated off a mark of 130 on her novice form. Pass The Hat is another that may be well treated but this is classy and preference is for the progressive Pink Coat at 8/1. He's done well since moving to Dessie Hughes and looked last time as though a step up to 2 and a half miles was needed. Bryan Cooper clearly gets on well with him and there should be more to come off a mark of 119. This is his toughest ask yet but there's much to like about the way he's going and a win in this company looks within him. Naas 15.15 - Pink Coat 1pt e/w

Lucinda Russell is considering the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on November 16 for Tap Night, a smart novice last season when his efforts included second to Captain Conan in Grade One company at Aintree. Tap Night gives chase to Captain Conan Entries for the £160,000 contest close on Tuesday, with the JP McManus-owned six-year-old scheduled to make his return to action at Carlisle in the Colin Parker Memorial this weekend, a race won by previous Paddy Power victors Little Josh (2010), L'Antartique (2007) and Exotic Dancer (2006). Russell said: "Tap Night will be entered for the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He runs this weekend at Carlisle and we will see how he gets on there before making a decision about Cheltenham. "He has come back from his summer break in good form and has been schooling and working nicely. I was really pleased with how well he did last season and I thought his run at Aintree behind Captain Conan was especially good. "Two and a half miles is his trip and he seems to handle any ground, so if he continues to improve, he should be competitive." Entries also close on Tuesday for the £100,000 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, which takes place over an extended two miles on the third and final day of The Open meeting, November 17.

Willie Mullins has confirmed Richard Hughes will take the ride on Simenon if he makes the final field for the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday week. Runner-up in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the Lonsdale Cup at York this summer, the six-year-old made an impressive start to his stint in Australia when a close third in the Herbert Power Stakes in the hands of Kerrin McEvoy. Simenon is currently 23rd in the order of entry, with a maximum field of 24 guaranteed, but could yet miss out. With the winners of Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes and Lexus Stakes both guaranteed a start in the 'race that stops a nation', the Irish stayer could be leapfrogged if the winners of both races are Cup nominees currently outside the field limit of 24. Mullins said: "Richard Hughes rides. The horse is in very good form. Everything is going according to plan with him. Emmet (Mullins) is very happy with him. He's eating and drinking and he's relaxed in his quarantine. "He seems like a professional traveller, as he's shown when he's been over to Ascot." Asked whether Hughes would sit on Simenon prior to the big day, the trainer said: "I don't know yet. He might get a sit on him on the morning race."

Long Run, the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and dual King George VI Chase scorer, heads 11 entries for the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday. Long Run: Set to reappear at Wetherby The Nicky Henderson-trained gelding has made his seasonal debut in the Betfair Chase at Haydock for the last two years but connections report the eight-year-old to be ready for a run slightly earlier this autumn. Long Run was second to Sir Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup on his final start in April. First Lieutenant, who was half a length away in third, is a possible for trainer Mouse Morris after finishing third on his return at the same course recently but is also engaged in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal the same day. A second Irish entry is the Tony Martin-trained Benefficient, winner of the Jewson Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He had a pipe-opener on the Flat at Listowel last month. David Bridgwater has put in The Giant Bolster, who was finished second and fourth in the last two runnings of the Gold Cup. The five-year-old Unioniste is Paul Nicholls' sole representative while Kim Bailey has his exciting six-year-old Harry Topper. A strong entry is completed by Big Fella Thanks, Billie Magern, Cape Tribulation, Master Of The Hall and Wayward Prince. "We're delighted to see Long Run in the entries and he's clearly the one to beat," said Pat Cooney, spokesman for the sponsors. "However, it may not be a straightforward task to win this on his seasonal debut as there are some talented rivals in opposition on Saturday, notably Paul Nicholls exciting five year old Unioniste, who has the potential to be a Gold Cup contender. "There's no doubt though that Long Run is the star of the show and it would be great. If he can win in front of a packed Wetherby crowd."

13:20 Tuesday 29th October Racing Tips - 29/10/2013
I'm a touch gutted with Piceno's draw because at 25/1 he is a massive price, even from 3lb out of the weights. Tight tracks are his thing and he goes on the ground but, drawn widest of all, he has little hope of racing prominently. The top 2 in the weights make plenty of appeal but I worry about 3 year old Monakova in this very testing ground. David O'Meara has worked his magic with her this summer and she was unlucky last time but she's on the short side with no guarantees to go in the ground. Showboating picked up really well last time over course an distance and is relatively well treated under only a 4lb penalty. However, they went quite a gallop that day and, with not so much pace on offer this afternoon, it may be worth siding with Llewellyn at 7/1. He finished best of those racing prominently last time and is raised 1lb for his troubles. He should be able to race up with the pace from stall 7 and has a good record here on soft ground. Adrian Nicholls is back on so there's effectively an extra 7lb on his back but the 2 get on well together and I fancy him to be in the frame at the very least. Catterick 14.20 - Llewellyn 1pt e/w
Tajneed would be a popular winner at Catterick and he has a real chance of doubling up after a soft ground win at Newcastle last time out. He is up 5lb but unlikely to have it all his own way up front in what is technically a tougher race. Captain Scooby is still floating around an interesting mark but, given a likely fierce pace, is not guaranteed to stay. Half A Billion has dropped back to his last winning mark and has been placed or victorious on 50% of starts with Connor Beasley on top. He won over course and distance 12 months ago when challenged for the lead but that in fact helped him given he stays well. 3rd here over 7 furlongs, he wants a good gallop to chase up top and is drawn right next to Tajneed who should give him a nice tow through. The concern is that he is unraced on heavy but both turf wins have come with cut in the ground and he should be capable of a win back in this class at 11/2. Catterick 13.50 - Half A Billion 1pt e/w
Continuing to work backwards up the card, Italian Tom looks a worthy favourite off the same mark as when 3rd and 2nd respectively on his last 2 starts. Luke Morris is back on for the first time this year and he gets on better with this 6 year old than anyone. He did best from the back last time at Yarmouth and was staying on over 5 on penultimate start, both on soft ground. A strong gallop seems likely today and that should set the race up nicely for him. Running off 5lb lower than his last winning mark, 7/2 is about right and worth taking. Top weight Son Du Silence will love the ground but may not retain enough ability of old off a still lofty mark, while the well treated pair of Meandmyshadow and Noodles Blue Boy are not certain to like the heavy ground. Catterick 13.20 - Italian Tom 2pt win

The 18-times champion jockey is within touching distance of achieving the extraordinary milestone, but plans to remain in the saddle for some time yet. McCoy told the Daily Mail: "I want to be able to retire at the top and if I am going to do that, it will mean retiring when I am champion jockey. That won't be easy. "But it won't be when I ride 4,000 winners - that's for sure. "If I could get to 20 champion jockeys' (titles) and ride another 200 winners, I could beat Martin Pipe's record (4,182 winners as a trainer)." Asked whether he would ever consider training, McCoy said: "Definitely not jumpers. "If John Magnier or Sheikh Fahad Al Thani said they wanted me to train 100 two-year-olds on the Flat, I might think about it. "But, other than those two, probably not." McCoy said he felt the team responsible for fellow jockey Jason Maguire had taken a "cheap shot" earlier in the year when he was sidelined with broken ribs. Maguire's connections had pledged to fight the perennial champion for the 2013-14 title, but McCoy said: "In fairness, Jason rang me and said he was sorry and embarrassed. "He said he hadn't said it, it was his then agent. But sure it gives you motivation. "I did feel it was a cheap shot while I was injured with broken ribs, but I came back after three and a half weeks when I really shouldn't have been anywhere near a horse for another three and a half weeks. "The first horse I rode won at Ludlow and I was in bits. I should have been at home, but I was so obsessed, I did not care how my body felt." McCoy has two rides at Carlisle on Wednesday, as he closes in on the milestone 4,000-winner mark.

It may be 13 years since his last success at this meeting but the 50-year-old has lost none of his appetite as he aims to bridge that gap and get back on the roll of honour. Though not all of his 13 rides over the two days are in the Breeders' Cup races, he cannot wait to be in action at Santa Anita, his local track, where he enjoyed great success first time round and rode his first comeback winner in January. Among his booked mounts are Indy Point in the Turf, Marketing Mix in the Filly & Mare Turf and She's A Tiger in the Juvenile Fillies Dirt. Stevens said: "It's been a good year, better than I could have hoped, and things are progressing well. I look forward to the weekend. The horses I ride are hand-picked by my agent from a select bunch of trainers, including Tom Proctor and Richard Mandella. "You always hope for the best and expect the worst, but the nine Breeders' Cup rides I have all have legitimate claims. I hope to walk away with quite a bit of hardware (winnings) and I'll be disappointed if I don't. "My good friend Mike Smith is riding in 12 races and he feels the same. He is as confident as I am. I guess we are entitled to be because the majority of our horses (Americans) are prepared for this one day, while the majority of the Europeans are coming off a hard season. "For our horses, this has been their only goal. However, I do respect the claims of Dank in the Filly & Mare Turf, because Stoutey (Sir Michael Stoute) was telling me before she won the Beverly D Stakes, in which I was on Marketing Mix, that she would be heading to the Breeders' Cup with a big chance."

David Pipe's seven-year-old was a leading staying hurdler a couple of seasons ago and shone as a novice chaser last term, winning four of his five starts over fences. The Charlie Hall Chase was discussed a potential option for the exciting grey, but Pipe has decided to revert to the smaller obstacles for his first start of the campaign, in the race registered as the West Yorkshire Hurdle. Profiles D Pipe Dynaste (FR) Speaking on his website www.davidpipe.com, the trainer said: "Dynaste is an intended runner at Wetherby on Saturday. "He will likely make his seasonal debut over hurdles in the West Yorkshire Hurdle. It looks an ideal sort of race for him to kick off the new season and I would imagine that Tom Scudamore will be itching to get back on him." Pipe's other top-class grey, Grands Crus, has something to prove after failing to show his best form in three starts last season. Connections decided against a trip to Wetherby for him this weekend and he will instead run over hurdles at Kempton on Monday. "Grands Crus will not run on Saturday, but instead probably wait for the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Qualifier at Kempton next Monday," said Pipe. "He is in good order at home and I am looking forward to seeing him back on the racecourse." Dynaste is among nine confirmations for the bet365 Hurdle. Last year's winner Tidal Bay is set to defend his crown, having been sidelined by injury since winning a thrilling renewal of the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown last Christmas. Donald McCain said Across The Bay, who was last seen finishing 14th in the John Smith's Grand National, is a likely runner. "Across The Bay needs to work later this week, but the bet365 Hurdle looks the obvious place to start him this season. It looks like it is going to be a hot r,ace, but his first big target is the Becher Chase in December and I want to get a run into him before then. We will also be looking at the Grand National again" he revealed. The Rebecca Curtis-trained At Fishers Cross could make his seasonal reappearance having won the major staying novice hurdles at Cheltenham and Aintree in the spring. Alan King has entered Coral Cup winner Medinas while Trustan Times is an interesting contender for Tim Easterby. Captain Sunshine, Master Of The Sea and The Knoxs, know with Sue Smith, complete the entries. The sponsor's spokesman Pat Cooney said: "The betting public have really latched on to At Fishers Cross. He was our worst result at the last Cheltenham Festival, and we expect him to be a well backed favourite again on Saturday. "He faces a talent-packed field though and the likes of Dynaste and Tidal Bay in particular will provide a stern test for him, and if At Fishers Cross does win, I'd expect him to overtake Big Buck's as the World Hurdle at Cheltenham market leader."

Ed Walker is keeping his fingers crossed that Ruscello makes the final field for Saturday's Lexus Stakes at Flemington. The four year old hasn't won for over a year but he has been running consistently, finishing third on four of his six starts in the UK before jetting out to Australia. He made his debut Down Under in the Biretta & Busby Hatmaker Co. Handicap over 10 furlongs at Caulfield just under two weeks ago, running a huge race to be beaten by a short-head. Profiles Ruscello (IRE) Walker revealed that he was delighted with the run: "Very much so, especially from a bad draw and the way the race panned out. "He was doing a lot of work at the wrong stage of the race and, in my opinion, he's not a horse that wants to be in front too long and he probably hit the front a little too early as well, through no fault of Kerrin's (McEvoy)." The Newmarket handler revealed that he had taken a lot of confidence from that performance and that the Cape Cross gelding has been working well since. "We were unlucky not to win (at Caulfield) so we take a lot of confidence out of that. Ideally we need a lead horse down here, he just does what he has to but he looks in great shape. He's as fit as a flea and he'll have come on for that run, "he told www.springracingcarnival.com.au. Ruscello needs three horses to come out in order to get a starting berth in Saturday's Group Two and connections have yet to draw up an alternative plan if he fails to make the cut.

The entries for the £175,000 Hennessy Gold Cup (Saturday 30 November) at The Racecourse Newbury have been released and Tidal Bay and Imperial Commander could bid to make history by becoming the first 12-year-olds to win the great race. Paul Nicholls, who has won it three times as a trainer, has entered seven: Tidal Bay, Unioniste, Rolling Aces, Rocky Creek, Mon Parrain, Poungach and Aiteen Thirtythree. The Irish haven't landed the Hennessy Gold Cup since 1980 but Lord Windermere, trained by Jim Culloty, could bid to follow in the hoofprints of last year's winner Bobs Worth, who had also taken the previous season's RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Champion Irish trainer Willie Mullins has five possible runners: Prince de Beauchene, Terminal, On His Own, Themoonandsixpence and Vesper Bell. Venetia Williams is one of only two female trainers to have won the Hennessy and she will be hopeful that her progressive seven-year-old Katenko can give her a second victory following Teeton Mill's success in 1998. Bobs Worth gave champion trainer Nicky Henderson his second win in the race 12 months ago and the Lambourn handler could potentially saddle Roberto Goldback, Triolo d'Alene and Hadrian's Approach. Other notable contenders are Cape Tribulation, Harry Topper, Opening Batsman, Our Father and Invictus. The latter hasn't been seen since defeating Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti in the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase at Ascot in February 2012 and Alan King's inmate is an intriguing runner. Stephen Higgins, Managing Director at The Racecourse Newbury, said: "We're delighted with the entries for the Hennessy Gold Cup. Last year's contest was incredible, with the front three all going on to win Grade 1 races later that season, and it proved once again what a great race it is. "The crowd would love to see Tidal Bay and Imperial Commander take their place in the line-up and it would be just fascinating to see how they fare against the younger brigade like Lord Windermere, Katenko and Rocky Creek."

Gordon Elliott is in no rush to make plans for Don Cossack following his brilliant chasing debut at Galway on Monday. The Gigginstown Stud-owned six-year-old has always been held in the highest regard by his County Meath handler and looked a potential world-beater when winning three of his four bumper starts. His novice hurdling career was not quite as smooth, but the giant gelding was always likely to fare better over the larger obstacles and he could not have been more impressive when slamming his opponents by 20 lengths at Ballybrit. Profiles G Elliott Don Cossack (GER) Elliott said: "He probably didn't beat a lot but it was a nice start. "He obviously handles heavy ground well, so we'll see where we go from here. "I haven't any plans in mind at the moment." The trainer confirmed Grade One-winning novice chaser Mount Benbulben will line up in Saturday's JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal, but the participation of stable companion Roi Du Mee in the same race remains undecided.

Britain's leading female jockey spoke to Sportswomen on Tuesday morning, when she might usually have been on her way to an afternoon race meeting somewhere around the country. Turner became the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in 2008, but has since repeatedly been denied the chance to reach the landmark by injury, most recently a horror fall from Seal Of Approval at Doncaster at the St Leger meeting in September. James Fanshawe's filly went on to win the Group 1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot, just to add to Hayley's frustration, but she says it is the daily grind of not being able to work that is hardest to come to terms with. "The actual pain of the injury is irrelevant; it doesn't bother me and it wouldn't phase me having that again. It's mentally trying to deal with it and not having anything to do," Hayley told skysports.com "You go from getting up at 5:30 in the morning, riding work, getting breakfast, going racing and then on to another meeting, every day busy to then doing nothing. I'm trying to get my head around it. It's my way of life and all I know. Suddenly I've been thrown into the real world. "That's the hardest thing for me. If someone said 'you are going to have that fall again' I wouldn't be bothered physically - it didn't hurt - it's my family I would feel sorry for the most because they know what I am like when I am not working. "They know how much I love racing and they have to entertain me. "I was pleased for George (Baker) on Champions Day because he is quite a close friend of mine and someone I go to for a bit of help. He'd never had a Group 1 winner and I have. He's a really good rider and having your first Group 1 winner is great. He could retire tomorrow and be happy. "But at the same time, when she crossed the line I had a few minutes where I had a meltdown, but I got a grip and like me she's back next year. For a horse to have a fall like that and come back so soon is amazing - how tough is she? Next year she is going to be even better, but I am not going to tempt fate. "I'm not going to get going until the end of December but just to get back fit is my aim. I won't be 100% automatically because you can't beat race riding for that, but I want to be back for next year's turf racing." Hayley is adamant female jockeys do not get treated any differently to their male counterparts but concedes they face different challenges, especially in terms of their physical fitness. She continued: "It doesn't phase me at all. It's kind of like going into the office, it's just routine and it really isn't an issue. We share lifts with the guys, they keep me grounded. I can't go in there thinking I am 'it' or they would soon put me down. "Within the industry the way we are seen hasn't changed. It's the same for the male jockeys as well - they have to get going and prove themselves, and I had to do the same. "Because I am there every day it's not a big deal. Out of the industry it might be but inside the other jockeys keep you grounded. "For female jockeys, I don't think you can help the injuries, but I think they need to train a bit harder and be physically fitter. The blokes are physically stronger so the fitter a girl can be the better. "It's why I think the girls in the USA and New Zealand do better. They are all tight tracks, they push for a couple of furlongs, it's a bit like Lingfield. Here you get a big backward colt, just getting down to the mile-and-a-half start and back at somewhere like Epsom needs strength and that's where the weakness shows."
