Stat Watch.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
This Saturday's action due to be televised on Channel 4 includes a decent combination of qual- ity Flat races from Ascot (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.50), Newmarket (1.50, 2.20 and 2.55) and Redcar (3.30.) Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes are still battling it out for this season's jockeys' championship, with Moore riding more winners than any other Flat jockey in Britain in the week ending Monday, 30 September. Moore's 10 winners eclipsed Hughes' 4 in the same period, although Hughes still has a healthy lead. Moore's 30% strike rate was excellent but was bettered by a good margin by Mickael Barzalona, whose 41% strike rate set the standard. Barzalona's 7 wins put him third in the standings for this latest week, in behind Neil Callan's 8. In the last week, the top Flat trainer in the country by wins was Mark Johnston, whose 6 victories just pipped the 5 of Charlie Appleby, whose 27% strike rate smashed the 15% of Johnston, if just behind the leading figure of 30% set by Sir Michael Stoute. In fact, the form of Moore and Stoute was gener- ally achieved in unison, with their 4 combined wins equalled by Luke Morris and Sir Mark Prescott, and Mickael Barzalona and Charlie Ap- pleby. However, the benchmark for jockey-trainer partnership strike rate was set by Moore and Stoute: 57%. At Ascot, Willie Haggas has won the Bengough Stakes previously, and the Newmarket trainer, who has a respectable 18% winning strike rate in the past 14 days, looks to have a good chance of landing this race again with Heerat. Last seen in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, when un- suited by the testing ground, the return to the ex- pected good going should help Heerat, who is also 27% over distance (6f). Earlier in the afternoon at Ascot, the Group 3 Corn- wallis Stakes looks a fair opportunity for Richard Hannon's Brown Sugar, who has form over a num- ber of those who may take her on again. Her trainer is one of the most prolific at the racecourse, with 31 wins there in the last five seasons, a figure equalled only by Mark Johnston, among those trainers with possible runners in this race. Mark Johnston's runners have also brought home the silverware from Newmarket on plenty of occa- sions in the past five seasons, and the Middleham trainer has a strong selection of possible runners in the Chris Blackwell Memorial Handicap, a Class 2 race over 10f. Mahican ran well last time despite being slowly away, and while the handicapper raised him 4lb for that effort, he is one of the less exposed horses in the race, with winning form on the anticipated good-firm ground and over dis- tance. Another unexposed potential improver is local trainer Luca Cumani's Ajman Bridge, who is unbeaten in two starts, including when stepped up to this trip for his seasonal debut last time. Cumani's winning strike rate is 17% at this course in the past five seasons. Redcar's race of the day is the Listed Two-Year- Old Trophy, over 6f. Traditionally, the race boasts a large field, which explains why there have only been two winning favourites of the race in the past decade, but there's sure to be plenty of sup- port for one or both of Aidan O'Brien's potential runners, the pick of which looks to be Wilshire Boulevard, who is 2 from 4 on the expected good going. Also, O'Brien's team have been in the best form of all the trainers with entrants in this race, with a 23% strike rate in the past fortnight. Michael Dods' team hasn't been in such scintil- lating form of late, but they do have a fair winning record at Redcar in the longer term and Mecca's Angel has won on this ground, gone close at this level in his last two starts, and looks to have been crying out for the step up in trip to 6f.

NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
MISS FRANCE looked very impressive when overcoming some greenness to land the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket last week. The Andre Fabre-trained daughter of Dansili had two races' worth of experience under her belt, winning a juvenile fillies' maiden at Chantilly, over 1m, on her second outing. On this latest start, though, it was plain to see that Miss France was still far from the finished article and her jockey Mickael Barzalona didn't give her a hard time as he brought her into con- tention, which suggests that there should be more to come as she was surely better value than her head-winning margin. The runner-up came to the race having won both her starts pre- viously, including a conditions race at Don- caster's St Leger meeting, and stepped up again at Newmarket. That suggests the form is proba- bly pretty solid and Miss France is one to look out for next season, as well as this term, if turned out for one more start before the winter break. IVOR'S KING won his chasing debut, a 2m ½f novices' chase at Newton Abbot in decent enough fashion on Monday. Although the race wasn't the strongest, he beat an odds-on favourite of Paul Nicholls, VALCO DE TOUZAINE , who boasted the best hurdling form, and a handy weight allowance as a four-year-old. The latter horse didn't settle, however, which played into the hands of Ivor's King, who, as a winner over 2m 4f when hurdling last season, understandably set a strong pace out front under Joe Tizzard and ran on well when shaken up two out. This was probably a fairly easy starting point, but given the ease with which he won, Ivor's King looks capable of following up under a penalty, and his best previous form sug- gests that he won't mind more testing ground when the wintry weather arrives. Valco De Touzaine couldn't have been said not to have handled the good-soft ground, but his dif- ficulty in settling meant that he was a spent force at the end, whereas the winner was still full of running. The runner-up's best form in France was achieved on good ground, but for now he may be expected to improve for the outing as much as the experience, and providing he settles, should be up to winning a race such as this. The 5f nursery handicap at Chester was well sup- ported, with 11 runners going to post. The third- placed TELEGRAPH , trained by Andrew Balding could have had better luck in running, although his initial tardiness at the start surely compro- mised his prospects. However, he was making headway into the last furlong when he was left short of room, so his eventual third-place finish was probably satisfactory in the circumstances, and he can make his mark in these races. Two places behind Telegraph was the Sylvester Kirk- trained PENNY'S BOY , who was another to have started slowly, but he finished very well from the rear and looks up to winning a similar race. At Haydock, CASCADING looked as though she would come on the proverbial bundle when a green but running-on fourth of 12 runners at 25/1. The first three home had all had the ben- efit of previous race experience to draw upon and given how well the Hughie Morrison-trained Cascading finished, she looks one to watch out for in similar races before the season's end.

RACING NEWS.
Martin Harley has announced that he will quit his position as first jockey to Mick Channon to join the Newmarket stable of trainer Marco Botti. Harley, 24, was champion apprentice in 2011 and rode his first Classic winner last season, when the Channon-trained Samitar won the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Grade 3-winning chaser Chaninbar is likely to head to the sales after trainer Tony Middleton said he had run out of options with the 10-year- old, who was banned for 60 days after refusing to race at Listowel last month. Chaninbar, the winner of the Red Rum Chase in 2010, is banned indefinitely from racing in Britain and France after refusing to race a number of times. Chepstow racecourse is to stage a 'Legends' charity Flat race at its first meeting of the current Jumps season on 12 October. Accord- ing to reports, Jim Culloty, Carl Llewellyn, Adrian Maguire and Graham Bradley are set to take part. Lady Cecil, who took over the reins of the famous Warren Place Stables in Newmarket following the death of her husband and 10-time champion trainer Sir Henry Cecil earlier this year, has announced her intention to carry on, with her goal being to train a Group 1 winner. A few days later, Mike Marshall, assistant trainer at Warren Place for the past six years, announced he was leaving to join fellow Newmarket trainer Ismail Mohammed in a similar position. Also, it was reported that Lady Cecil will lease one of the self-contained yards at Warren Place to fellow Newmarket trainer Ed Walker, but will have more than 100 boxes for her own use. Oliver Peslier is bidding this weekend to make history by becoming the first jockey to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe five times. Currently, Peslier is tied with four other jockeys - Pat Eddery, Jacques Doyasbere, Freddy Head and Yves Saint-Martin - on four Arc wins apiece, and believes that his Andre Fabre-trained mount Intello has a good chance of landing the race, following his recent trial race-win in holding ground. This season's leading British sprinters Society Rock and Lethal Force have retired to stud. Trained by James Fanshawe, Society Rock won two Group 1s from 22 starts, but missed his last intended engagement when a fall left him with concussion. It is reported that he will join Tally Ho Stud in Ireland. Lethal Force joined Cheveley Park Stud last week, after a strong season during which he won the Group 1 July Cup and Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Sky Lantern finished an impressive winner of the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last weekend, which was also her third Group 1 success of the season. Trainer Richard Hannon reported that connections are considering a crack at the QEII at Ascot later this month, and described her as "a very special filly." Former champion jockey Seb Sanders rode the 2,000th winner of his career when the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Legends prevailed by 11 lengths at last Friday evening's meeting at Wolverhampton. Highlights of the 42-year-old jockey's career include winning the 1997 July Cup aboard Compton Place, winning the jock- eys' title (shared with Jamie Spencer) in 2007, and winning the Oaks on Look Here the follow- ing season. After coming from last to first to win the Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket last week, the Charles Hill-trained Chriselliam was in- stalled by some bookmakers at 20/1 for Classic glory next season in the 1,000 Guineas. Fillies' Mile runner-up Rizeena was eased from 10/1 to 12/1, and her trainer Clive Brittain later reported that she would now be put away for a break in preparation for the 1,000 Guineas.

Race Ratings Saturday, 5 October - 2.40 Ascot Grosvenor Casinos Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) 1m4f 5-5553 Allied Powers 21 8 Michael Bell Won a Group 3 at Longchamp in May 2012, but was a beaten third in that same race this year, echoing a general trend that he's on the decline. Third last time over distance in Chester Listed race, after a four- month break, but still below-par and more required here. RATING 90 41112 Dabadiyan 8 3 M Halford Progressive youngster owned by the Aga Khan who bumped into a potentially decent sort when second last time at Dundalk. Untried at this level, but recent form suggests he's heading the right way. Small each- way claims. RATING 96 67902 Gatewood 24 5 John Gosden Not disgraced on first run back for Gosden last time when runner-up and beaten favourite in a conditions race at Doncaster's St Leger meeting, defeated by a former favourite for the Kentucky Derby. Previous form at this level and in Group 2 company gives him a chance here. RATING 97 117-71 Gospel Choir 10 4 Sir Michael Stoute Late-maturing, but generally progressive son of Galileo, and just the sort that his trainer prospers with. Latest win in Goodwood handicap suggested there could be more to come, but possibly not quite at this level yet. RATING 96 6012-6 Hajras 14 4 Mark Johnston Unraced at two, this son of Dubai Destination evolved into a decent handicapper last season over 10f. Weakened away late in the day on seasonal debut in Listed race last time. Should improve for the run and extra trip should help, and while he has to prove him- self at this level, could sneak a place at a nice price. RATING 95 22-176 Mijhaar 64 5 Roger Varian Stable has been flying lately, but Mijhaar's form has been fair if uninspiring this season, running below his best at this level on his last two starts, and most re- cent win came in a Listed handicap at Hamilton. Even allowing for stable's good run, others preferred. RATING 94 1-2031 Out Of Bounds 24 4 Saeed bin Suroor One-time Kentucky Derby favourite who is now with Godolphin, and just beat Gatewood last time on his comeback at Doncaster, having gone well in Dubai winter campaign. Relatively lightly-raced and may come on for his latest run again. Respected. 98 25681 Quiz Mistress 5 Hughie Morrison Progressed for this stable this season and last, win- ning two French Listed races and was a good second to the progressive Universal in the Group 3 John Porter Stakes earlier this season. Has yet to quite re- capture that form this season, but could surprise a few. RATING 97 04036 Repeater 9 4 David O ́Meara Formerly with Sir Mark Prescott, and first run for cur- rent trainer was decent third in the Doncaster Cup last month. That form entitles him to respect here, al- though things didn't go to plan when sixth on latest start in a Listed race. Drop in trip to 1m 4f is interest- ing; presumably connections are hoping that he will be able to get his own way at the front. RATING 96 220112 Royal Empire 28 4 Saeed bin Suroor The most consistent of the field at this level this sea- son, but Group 3 win time before last means that he's the only one to bear a penalty. However, solid form means it's hard to ignore him and entitled to be thereabouts. RATING 99 364536 Secret Number 21 3 Saeed bin Suroor Sixth in St Leger last time means that this three- year-old is the only one with Group 1 form to his name this season, and he was also hampered at a late stage in that race. As a three-year-old in this race, he also carries 7lb less than horses aged four years or more, and third in the Group 2 Voltigeur Stakes the time before last was also decent form. Should go close on drop back in grade. RATING 100

View from connections ahead of Sunday's Grade Three Like A Butterfly Novice Chase at Tipperary. Owega Star: Has Rebel Fitz to beat? Peter Fahey rates Rebel Fitz as the obvious danger as his Owega Star lines up in Sunday's Grade Three Like A Butterfly Novice Chase at Tipperary. Rebel Fitz is some way clear of all his six rivals on the ratings and has won his last four starts over fences for trainer Michael Winters. However, he does prefer a sound surface in contrast to Owega Star who would prefer some ease in the ground. While a little way behind Rebel Fitz, Owega Star is no slouch as he was a Grade Two winner over hurdles and scored over the bigger obstacles last time out at Listowel last month. Fahey said: "He's not really ground dependant, but I definitely want a bit of cut. "He enjoyed the step up in trip in Listowel. "A nice novice chase in Leopardstown at Christmas is still the plan. He'll have loads of experience and I'll put him away after Sunday's race. "I'm hopeful he'll run a very good race, but it's hard to be confident with Rebel Fitz running. It looks a race for second place. "Rebel Fitz is rated 150 plus and was rated higher than us over hurdles." Run With The Wind and Clar Na Mionn were both winners last time out while Caoimhe's Delight was victorious over fences at Kilbeggan back in May. Toostrong and Boxer Beat are also among the septet who go to post.

View from connections ahead of Sunday's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Leading Light: Won't be affected by the ground Aidan O'Brien feels soft ground will hold no fears for Ruler Of The World and Leading Light in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Heavy rain on Thursday night turned the ground soft and the jockeys riding there on Saturday reported the going to be fairly testing, although the weather appears set fair for the rest of the weekend. O'Brien's pair are both available at double-figure prices, despite faring well at the draw with single-figure stalls and each of them has already won a Classic this season, with Ruler Of The World landing the Investec Derby and Leading Light the Ladbrokes St Leger. Ruler Of The World bounced back from a disappointing run in the Irish Derby to be beaten a short-head by the Japanese Derby winner Kizuna in the Prix Niel, while Leading Light faces another drop back in trip after winning over two miles at Royal Ascot. "Both of them are in good form and seem to be fine after their last runs," said O'Brien, who has booked Gerald Mosse for Leading Light with Ryan Moore on Ruler Of The World. "I think the lads (owners John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor) always had one eye on him (Leading Light) with regards to the Arc but he was pointed at Ascot first and then Doncaster and then they waited to see what happened, but I think it was always on their minds. "His two runs before Ascot were over a mile and a quarter, he was a Group winner over that trip before Ascot, then won over two miles at Ascot and came back to a mile and six at Doncaster, so it's a gradual progression back (in trip). "We're very happy with Ruler Of The World. He was just back after a break (in the Niel) and Ryan was very happy and learned a lot about him. It can get rough at Longchamp and he will have learned he's happy to be in there. "I don't think either of them will mind the ground, both of them have form on easy ground." Criquette Head-Maarek insists that stall 15 will be "no problem" for Treve as the unbeaten filly bids to beat the statistics. Winner of the French Oaks and the Prix Vermeille already this season, Treve impressed many with her smart change of gear under Frankie Dettori to win her trial impressively, suggesting she would be a major player in the Arc, especially given the allowance for a three-year-old filly. Her chances had already been dealt one apparent blow on Wednesday when Dettori, retained rider for owner Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, fractured an ankle at Nottingham, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Head-Maarek moved swiftly to reunite Thierry Jarnet with Treve so is unconcerned on that score - and also believes talk about the importance of a low draw is overplayed. "The draw is no problem," said the Chantilly trainer. "There are good horses everywhere and there are bad horses everywhere, the best horse will win. "At this distance all the talk about the draw is crazy. I could understand it if the race was over a mile at Longchamp but over 2,400 metres? Give me a break. "My filly needs to be behind horses anyway, that is how she runs. The best horse will win, we won't use the draw as an excuse. "In our case it could have been worse if we were drawn on the inside anyway because of her style. As long as there is pace in the race there should be no problems and there usually is when the foreign horses run. "The new jockey will make no difference to the filly but it does to Frankie. It is unfortunate that he got a bad injury doing his job. Jarnet knows her well, he rode all the time in the beginning. The best horse will win, I'm sure of that." Orfevre's trainer Yasutoshi Ikee wants to "set the record straight" for last year's runner-up, who collided with a rail after streaking to the front. Ikee admits that Orfevre, who has been drawn in stall eight, can be his own worst enemy at times, but he has been delighted with his charge since his easy victory in the Prix Foy. "His preparation has gone very well. It was a serious workout (on Wednesday) and he came through without hesitation and once he was in front, he finished well," said Ikee. "Naturally (he can be his own worst enemy). There's some very good horses in the race but we know when he works well and if everything goes well on Sunday, I think he can win. "I really thought we would have won last year, I was very disappointed. Orfevre had a relapse that day but I really hope he can give the Japanese fans something to cheer on Sunday. I want to set the record straight." There is a strong second string to the Far East challenge with the Japanese Derby winner, Kizuna, a son of Deep Impact, well fancied after holding off the Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World in the Prix Niel. Andre Fabre is responsible for five of the 18-runner field, with his Prix du Jockey Club winner Intello (stall nine) his best hope, according to the bookmakers. Flintshire (seven), Ocovango (13), Godolphin's Penglai Pavilion (10) and Pirika (three) complete Fabre's nap hand of runners. "I think the ground will be good to soft come Sunday which Flintshire should be able to handle," said Fabre on Friday. "I've been very happy with him and as for the draw, I always think that is only a problem if there is no pace. "I'm hoping for a good pace, then there will be no problems. For instance, horses like Ocovango and Penglai Pavilion are strong gallopers so they are likely to be going forward. "A strong pace may help Intello but we've never had a problem with him settling. He's a very handy horse - he's like a polo pony." Flintshire headed the ante-post market after his impressive success in the Grand Prix de Paris but was only fourth in the Niel on soft ground. Conditions are again a concern for the Andre Fabre-trained colt, with Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, saying on Saturday: "He needs it to dry out, I don't think there's any secret about that. We certainly don't want any more rain. Other than that, the horse is fine." When asked which of his five runners held the best claims, Fabre said: "Everybody knows the ratings of the horses, far better than I do, and in a race like the Arc the ratings are key." Intello will be partnered by Olivier Peslier in his role as retained rider to the owners, the Wertheimer brothers, and he will be looking for back-to-back Arcs after his shock win on Solemia. Al Kazeem is flying the flag for Britain in Sunday's race but Roger Charlton's stable star was dealt a cruel blow at the draw when he was handed stall 18. Statistics show that a single-figure draw increases a runner's chances in Europe's premier middle-distance Flat race, although Orfevre was a close second from the same berth 12 months ago. Earlier in the season Al Kazeem was the ante-post favourite for the race after Group One wins in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Eclipse but subsequent defeats at York and Leopardstown mean he is available at an each-way price. Charlton feels he has been quickly forgotten by punters, however, and recent rain at Longchamp at least means he is likely to have conditions in his favour for the first time in a long while. "There's not much we can do about the draw," said Charlton. "At least we've had the rain, though I think it will dry to good to soft by Sunday, so there'll be no excuses on that front, but the draw makes it difficult. "If he hadn't run at York and if we'd considered Leopardstown as something of his prep race for this he would be much shorter in the betting. "On ratings he's classed to be within two to three lengths of the favourites which isn't a lot to make up over a mile and a half but obviously we haven't been helped by the draw. I'm optimistic that he'll run very well, but he might need more. "He was favourite for the race after the Eclipse and people tend to build things up and then get very disappointed when they are beaten. There are reasons why he was beaten at York. It's a great race and I'm looking forward to it."

View from connections ahead of Sunday's Total Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp. Sandiva: A relaxed filly at home Richard Fahey is disappointed that Frankie Dettori is not able to ride Sandiva in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp on Sunday. Sandiva was bought by Dettori's boss Sheikh Joaan Al Thani before Royal Ascot, where she finished second in the Albany Stakes. The filly then bounced back to impressively win a Group Three over seven furlongs at Deauville, after which Dettori told Fahey he could not wait to ride her on Arc weekend. Unfortunately for the Italian he injured his ankle at Nottingham on Wednesday and Richard Hughes substitutes. Fahey said: "I'm a bit worried about the trip in soft ground but only because she's never done it before. "She's very relaxed at home and she'll give herself every chance of staying it and she's getting better all the time. "Last time she was impressive and that was despite things going against her. The pacemaker unseated coming out of the stalls and she was stuck out on the wing. "We've got Richard Hughes to ride after a lot of ringing around but I'd have loved Frankie to have ridden, he was so looking forward to riding her. Life can be cruel sometimes but Richard Hughes is not a bad replacement." Another British challenger is the Olly Stevens-trained Hoku, who was supplemented after being denied in a Group Three at Ayr. "She's been in very good form lately and she should love the ground," said Stevens. "I've always felt that she'd get further eventually so we're trying her over seven. "She's getting better with racing. It was heart-breaking to be beaten so narrowly at Ayr, that was the second time in just a few days it had happened to us (Lightning Thunder beaten in the Oh So Sharp Stakes). "We're taking a commercial view with her, she only cost £14,000 from Doncaster and if she can get some black type in a Group One she becomes very valuable. She already is but it is worth trying to add to it." Ryan Moore had been in the frame to replace Dettori on Sandiva but he was claimed by Aidan O'Brien to ride Wonderfully. "Wonderfully ran a week ago in the Fillies' Mile and took the race very well," O'Brien said on www.coolmore.com. "She runs in a visor which she wore previously when she won a Group Three, we feel this will be a help as she tends to race a little lazily - Ryan Moore rides." Charlie Hills' Queen Catrine, second to Lucky Kristale in the Lowther, and Godolphin's Majeyda, second in the May Hill, complete the British challenge. The home team looks strong with Alain de Royer-Dupre's Veda, Jean-Claude Rouget's Lesstalk In Paris and Freddie Head's Royalmania all defending unbeaten records. Head said: "She is a very nice filly and I think she will be very good next year. "At the moment she is still quite fragile, but she has got a lot of talent, so we will see how she runs on Sunday. "The ground should not be a problem for her, as long as there is not a lot of rain. If it is just on soft side like we think it will be that will be good."

Wise Dan's winning run came to an end at Keeneland when the Shadwell Turf Mile was switched to the Polytrack. Silver Max gets the better of Wise Dan (Keeneland photo) America's reigning Horse of the Year was seeking his tenth straight victory but a torrential downpour sunk his chances and saw the Grade One contest switched from the turf course to the artificial track. Eventual winner Silver Max made almost all of the running in the race that was contested over an extended mile due to the configuration of the Keeneland main track. Silver Max adopted his customary position at the head of affairs under Robby Albarado, setting a lively pace while being chased by Hogy and Wise Dan. On the second turn, Hogy could no longer keep pace, and wide-running Wise Dan moved boldly to challenge, but the leader easily had enough left to repel his challenge in the stretch. Willcox Inn, never a threat to the top two, rallied to edge Winning Prize for third. Wise Dan's trainer, Charlie LoPresti, didn't believe that either the change in distance or track were to blame for the reverse. "No because he broke the track record here going a mile and an eighth. Maybe with the water on it, it was more sticky. That's what it looks like to me but I am not going to make any excuses. He ran a great race; he really did. Johnny said (Silver Max) won fair and square - he just got loose on the front end," he told www.keeneland.comJockey John Velazquez may have felt that the best horse won, but he didn't feel that his mount was at his best. "He ran a good race; he just didn't run his A game today. First time running on the Polytrack and it's really wet and it seemed like he was tiring from it today," he said. "He couldn't seem to get his (footing). After that he kept trying. At the three-eighths pole, I thought I was going to be in control, that (running down Silver Max) was going to be easy, but when I went after him, he (Silver Max) started running again. "It was only a matter of time whether (Wise Dan) would handle the track. He handled the track OK, but the track is different today -- a lot of water. He had to work harder. Other than that he kept trying and ran hard." Winning rider Robby Albarado was delighted with his mount and believes that the horse has only just come to himself. "He's got such a high cruising speed. Dale [Romans, trainer] said 'Take it to them right away and let them catch you.' "He's doing so well. The horse has been training forwardly - the best he's been doing since he started with him. Dale prepared him well this year with stretching his races out. He's a fresh horse."

Trainer Mouse Morris has identified the Star Best For Racing Coverage Chase at Punchestown later this month as a potential starting point for First Lieutenant. First Lieutenant: Ready to return in next few weeks Last season's Betfred Bowl winner signed off for the campaign with an excellent third behind fellow Gigginstown-owned runner Sir Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup and could make his return to action at the same venue on October 17. "He's fine and has had a really good summer at Gigginstown. He's come back a very strong horse and he's in good shape," said Morris. "He'll probably get an entry in the race coming up at Punchestown and there's Down Royal again, so we'll see." Morris also revealed connections have called time on the career of China Rock. The 2012 Punchestown Gold Cup hero made just one appearance last season, finishing fifth in the Lexus. Meanwhile, exciting hurdler Rule The World is back in training after he suffered a fractured pelvis at the Punchestown Festival in the spring. The point-to-point graduate won three of his six starts last season and ran a fantastic race to fill the runner-up spot behind The New One in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Joseph O'Brien equalled a long-standing record set by Mick Kinane for the number of winners in an Irish Flat season when partnering Buonarroti to an emphatic success at Tipperary. Joseph O'Brien: Landmark victory Win number 114 for O'Brien could be called some way from home, as the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt stretched readily clear in the Athassel House Stud EBF Maiden having been positively ridden from the off. The 7/4 favourite was following in the hoofprints of top-class stablemate Leading Light, who won this event 12 months ago. After riding his eighth winner in the last two weeks, O'Brien said: "He jumped and travelled nicely and quickened up well. "I thought he would improve a lot from Galway. The lads that ride him at home said he had. He's a nice staying prospect and was impressive." Sruthan recorded a minor surprise with victory in the Coolmore Stud Home of Champions Concorde Stakes. Much interest surrounded Irish 1,000 Guineas fourth Big Break, who was having just her third start of the campaign. All looked to be going well for the 4/5 favourite after collaring the front-running Most Improved two furlongs out, but she was soon joined on her outside by the Paul Deegan-trained Sruthan (11/2) under the in-form Chris Hayes. The latter edged into an advantage over a furlong out and kept on all the way to the line to hold Big Break by three-quarters of a length. Hayes said: "Full credit to Paul, it was a good training performance. "He won the Tetrarch, but he got star struck. He didn't take the race as well as he should have and he flopped in his next two races, but he thrived from his run in the Curragh. He's in good hands."

Richard Fahey has supplemented Supplicant for the Vision.ae Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Supplicant: Supplemented for Middle Park The Cheveley Park Stud-owned juvenile has won his last three starts over six furlongs including the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury last time. That form got a major boost at the weekend when Hot Streak, also entered in the Newmarket race, was a facile winner of the Cornwallis at Ascot. "If there was a drop of rain it would be in his favour, but as things stand he'll be running," Fahey told sportinglife.com. "He's got winning form on fast ground and the step up to six furlongs seems to have really helped him." Green Door, winner of the Group Two Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster last month, has also been added to the field by trainer Olly Stevens along with Brown Sugar. Richard Hannon's charge booked his ticket with victory in the Group Three Sirenia Stakes at Kempton. The Everleigh handler also has Shamshon, who suffered his first defeat in three starts when fifth to Supplicant at Newbury. Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien is strongly represented with Craftsman, Giovanni Boldini, Great White Eagle, Michaelmas, War Command, Wilshire Boulevard and Stubbs. The latter is the only one of the seven not also engaged in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes on the same card. There is an eighth Irish-trained entry in the shape of Sudirman from David Wachman's stable. The Phoenix Stakes winner is also in the Dewhurst. As well as Hot Streak, the list of confirmations also includes the Kevin Ryan-trained stablemate Astaire, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes at York.
