midfield, headway 9th, hit 4 out, led narrowly 2 out, battled gamely run-in, on top towards finish
Made the successful transition from novice chases to handicaps in the Grand Annual, displaying admirable determination to deny Moon Over Miami. Has been raised 9lbs for that, which looks a little steep for less than 1l verdict, and will actually carry 15lbs more today. Nevertheless, conditions of race would appear to suit and should be suited by the course. The only negative is that Aintree is one of the few course where King has not enjoyed success with his hcap chasers.

held up in rear, headway approaching 3 out, went 2nd last, stayed on to lead final 50 yards
Was far from impressive before Christmas, but a couple of runs on the AW straightened him out and he gained his first HC under ideal conditions at Doncaster. Has been raised 5lbs for that, but would seem to have conditions in his favour again today, plus won a NC over C&D here at the back-end of ’07.

headway to track leaders 7th, led 2 out, headed and no extra towards finish
Runs off a 4lb lower mark than when winning a 4-horse HC at Ayr nearly 2 years ago. Better effort at Docaster lto and has the assistance of McCoy in the saddle today. However, has always seem more suited by small fields and might not reverse running with Leslingtaylor even on 4lbs better terms.

raced keenly, headway to chase leaders approaching 3rd, went 2nd before 5th, led after 3 out, headed narrowly 2 out, continued to press winner, not quicken close home
Not won since taking a NC at Newbury in December ’07, but came closest to upsetting Oh Crick in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham. Has been raised 7lbs for that effort, but meets the winner on 2lbs better terms today. Going and distance will suit, as should the course.
No fewer than 8 of this field met in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham where Oh Crick and Moon Over Miami battled their way to race honours. The handicapper has taken due note and both have been given a sizeable rise in the weights. This could perhaps open the door to others who weren’t put to the same exertions, such as Tramantano or Poquelin. Strictly from a VDW standpoint, Oh Crick would seem to be the c/f horse, but I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Leslingtaylor who has conditions more in his favour this year and should confirm Doncaster running with Bambi De L’Orme. So as the forecast prices permit, I think this will be a race in which to make a book of the pair.

in touch, effort 3 out, chased winner run-in, kept on under pressure
Won a NHH under today’s rider back in October and has generally run consistently since. Was expected to return to winning form at Fontwell lto, but unable to take advantage of the weight concession from Hills Of Aran. Walsh back in the saddle will help and likely to go well, as conditions should suit.

Ended the ‘06/’07 season with a couple of HH wins, but after a run that September was not seen again until surprising even his connections at Kempton in February. Has had a decent enough break since to recover and could go well again even off a 7lb higher mark. Trainer stats not very supportive however.

tracked leader, effort 4 out, led next, ridden and stayed on, held on well
Won both his NH starts last season, but hasn’t found things as easy in Listed HH this time round and had to be dropped in class to score at Haydock lto. Going back up in class again today and has improvement to find, although should be suited by the conditions.
Another of these large field Aintree hurdles where the winner is seldom identified. Claims could be made for many of these, but I’ll stick with my quartet above. Font would appear to be the VDW c/f selection, but I would not be surprised to see Hernando Royal run well as well. Once again it looks like a book can be made with this pair.
